When Mandeville-based Church of the King embarked on ambitious plans in 2018 to renovate the Jerusalem Temple on St. Charles Avenue and convert the historic building into a southshore worship center, church leaders had hoped to be finished by Christmas 2019. More than seven years later, the project’s $17.5 million price tag has nearly doubled to some $31 million, and construction is still not complete. Church officials attribute the delays to familiar factors — the COVID-19 pandemic, rising costs, permitting issues, regulations around historic building tax credits and funding challenges. The church is now seeking to raise $5 million to complete the renovation without having to take out a loan, said Executive Pastor Randy Craigshead, whose nondenominational church purchased the landmark in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. But Craigshead is optimistic the church will meet its fundraising goal in the coming months and hopeful that the project will be completed by the end of this summer. “This has been an adventure,” he

Saints quarterback Tyler Shough passes against the Tennessee Titans in the second half Sunday in Nashville, Tenn. Shough threw for 333 yards and rallied the Saints to a 34-26 win over the Titans. The Saints trailed by 10 points at halftime, but Shough carved up Tennessee through the air and the New Orleans defense settled into a rhythm in the second half. The No. 40 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, Shough outdueled the No. 1 pick Cam Ward, of the Titans. Shough’s 10-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Austin in the fourth quarter proved to be the winning score.

A special election is set for Feb. 7 to fill four open seats in the Louisiana House and one open seat in the Louisiana Senate after a handful of lawmakers resigned their posts this fall to pursue other jobs. Former state Sen. Joseph Bouie Jr. this summer took a job as chancellor of Southern University at New Orleans, leaving his New Orleans-area District 3 Senate seat open. Also in New Orleans, Jason Hughes and Matthew Willard have resigned their seats in the Louisiana House after winning election to the City Council in the fall.
