Volunteers prepare hot meals for diners during the Christmas Day meal Thursday at St. Vincent de Paul in Baton Rouge.
When he interviewed to be East Baton Rouge Parish schools superintendent, LaMont Cole pledged to find money to increase employee pay. Seventeen months later, he says he is almost there. Cole said he hopes to propose across-the-board pay raises in the next few months. He also plans to roll out a simpler but more generous set of Cole employee salary schedules. For some employees, the two changes, if approved, would mean not one but two pay boosts. They would take effect with the start of the 2026-27 fiscal year in July. In June, the school system agreed to pay Huntsville, Alabama-based consulting firm LEAN Frog Consulting $59,500 to rework the current complex set of schedules — they stretch for 83 pages — into something that’s “competitive, equitable and reflects current best practices with particular emphasis on improving employee retention, especially for certified staff.” LEAN Frog staff have spent the past six months analyzing the current schedules and benchmarking them against pay scales in comparable districts in Louisiana, other southeastern states and the nation. Cole said he has been receiving recommendations from LEAN Frog, and in the new year, he plans to test them out. One way new salary schedules can improve employee pay, he said, is by shifting lowerpaid employees to schedules of employees with similar caliber jobs but better pay.

guns, to sound the bugle, to give the final salute. When a veteran dies within an hour’s drive of Lafayette, this volunteer crew of the Acadiana Veterans Honor Guard reports to duty, alerting its roster, loading into a little bus and trekking to the cemetery. Four veterans started the nonprofit in 2014, after noticing that formal requests for
military honors were going unfilled. So they began answering the call, showing up to funerals, to burials and to hospice, bestowing pins. “During COVID, nobody came out,” said Barry Dufour, 72, an Air Force veteran. “Military did not come out. But we did.” They have attended more than 175 funerals this year, so far, sometimes two a day.
