HOLIDAY JUNCTION

Director of Photography David Grunfeld captured this magical moment when the City Park train’s 2-mile route passes in front of a line of trees bejeweled for Celebration in the Oaks, creating a quintessential image for New Orleans holidays.

Q&A WITH SANTA CLAUS

A one-on-one exclusive with the man in the red suit

BY SUZIE HUNT

Contributing writer On a recent afternoon, I was able to connect with Santa Claus while he was in Slidell (to meet some little boys and girls), and we spoke briefly about his busy holiday work schedule, what he does when he’s not checking his lists and building toys, that sort of thing. Here are a few insights from my conversation with the man in red. How do you prepare for the big night? Santa: There’s a lot of different things. But when it all comes down to it, I think about the red suit. When you put it on, it’s magical. That naughty and nice list must be a chore. How do you keep it all straight? It used to be a really big job, but now it’s all computerized. It’s one of the ways modern technology is helpful. When do you get your last update on the naughty list before the big trip? Asking for a friend, of course. It’s all digital now. I check it on Christmas Eve morning. It’s a tight window but

pretty accurate.

things will be better. It’s all I can do.

I’ll let my friend know.. Who handles all the checklists and scheduling? It’s a little mind-boggling when you think about it all.

What do you do with all those letters to Santa? The elves help me with the mail. The volume is tremendous.

Mrs. Claus takes care of the logistics. She’s very valuable in the grand scheme of things and does a great job.

Who’s your favorite reindeer? Rudolph, of course. He guides the way. I also make sure I have plenty of reindeer snacks for the others, so everyone’s happy.

What do you do in the off-season? Do you have a hobby? I play a little golf. Mainly, I like making toys.

Speaking of snacks, what do you carry in your sleigh to get you through the long night? Do you have an energy drink you prefer or do you prefer coffee? I don’t take much with me because of all the cookies and milk waiting for me. They keep me going.

You’re getting on in years, respectfully speaking. When do you plan to retire? I don’t have a retirement date in sight. I enjoy what I do. When you visit a local event, like Christmas Under the Stars (at Slidell’s Heritage Park), and children come to talk to you, what are their most common wishes? There’s a lot of requests for popular toys. It changes from year to year. What is hard is when they ask for things I can’t control, like “when will Dad come home?” or “Mom is sick, and can I make her better?”

That’s got to be tough. What do you do? I do my best to give them hope that

What’s your favorite cookie? That’s easy. Chunky chocolate chip. What do you do on Dec. 26? I snuggle in for a long winter’s nap. Well, thanks for your time. I know you’re a busy man this time of year. Very true. Merry Christmas to all!

The holiday season and all its trappings may upend pets’ routines, and that causes stress.

STRESS TEST

Here’s how to keep pets’ holiday anxiety to a minimum

With Christmas upon us, holiday stress is in full swing. Traffic is heavy, the clock is ticking on last-minute shopping, and for some, it’s a challenge to balance everyday work and home responsibilities with the added demands of the season. The hustle and bustle doesn’t just affect us: Our pets feel it, too. Dogs and cats are very tuned in to Traci our emotions, and when Howerton we’re anxious or overANIMAL whelmed, they often beRESCUE come stressed right along with us. Pets are creatures of habit, and routine provides them with a sense of security. During the holidays, keeping feeding times, walks, playtime and bedtime as close to normal as possible can go a long way toward reducing unnecessary anxiety. Holiday decorations, rearranged furniture and stacks of wrapped gifts can all be unsettling for pets. For those who travel, the appearance of suitcases is often a clear signal that something out of the ordinary is about to happen. Add to that an increase in visitors, noise and activity, and it’s easy to see why the holidays can be overwhelming for our four-legged family members. One of the best ways to help reduce holiday stress for pets is to create a safe, quiet space where they can retreat to when company arrives. Dogs, in particular, may become nervous around unfamiliar people, especially if guests include young children they aren’t used to. A quiet room with a comfortable bed and a favorite toy can provide a much-needed break. Cats are usually experts at finding their own escape route, but it’s still important to make sure they have access to a calm, undisturbed space. Keeping pets away from the party also helps prevent accidental exposure to unsafe foods. Guests may not realize that many table foods — including ham, chocolate, onions, grapes, alcohol and fatty leftovers — can be harmful or even dangerous. A holiday trip to the emergency vet is something no one wants. The holidays are also a peak time for pets to get lost. Doors are opening and closing more as people come and go, and a stressed or curious pet may slip outside unnoticed. Sometimes pets wander out accidentally; other times, anxiety puts them in “flight mode,” prompting them to escape an uncomfortable situation. Plus, with all the distractions, it may take longer than usual to realize that our

furry family member is missing. Making sure pets wear properly fitted collars with up-to-date ID tags, and are microchipped, can make a huge difference if the unthinkable happens. By taking a few simple precautions and maintaining routines as much as possible, we can help our pets stay calmer and safer throughout the holiday season. One great way to reduce human holiday stress is to volunteer at an animal shelter. Please consider donating a few hours of your time this season. Volunteers are often in short supply due to travel, celebrations and college students heading home for break. Your help can make the holidays brighter for shelter animals, and the staff would be incredibly grateful. ARNO has volunteer opportunities available 365 days a year, even on Christmas Day. A little extra planning and patience can help ensure the holidays are happy, healthy and calm for every member of the family — pets included. Wishing you and yours a joyous and peaceful holiday season!

Napoleon Ave., Metairie. Cyril Lagvanec, Ph.D., will explain how the two became adversaries after France’s 1940 collapse and violent clashes in Syria, Lebanon, Madagascar and North Africa. Both sides vied for control of French colonial territories and resources. While it was afraid of Axis expansion, Britain acted decisively to neutralize French assets (fleet, colonies) that could aid Germany. Ideologically, Vichy France, led by Marshal Pétain, embraced authoritarianism and collaboration, while Free French forces under Gen.
