Longtime area musician inducted into Louisiana Music Hall of Fame

The Louisiana Music Hall of Fame’s spring induction included a bass player who began his musical journey at the age of eight years old.

Charley Moran, 69, is known around southeast Louisiana as a talented bass player, as well as an encouraging mentor to other upand-coming musicians.

“Music is the only thing I’ve ever known all my life,” Moran said. “I was very overwhelmed being inducted into the Hall of Fame be-

The

cause there are a lot of great musicians in there.” Moran, who lives in Maurepas, has two adult children and recently retired from being Picou Brothers Construction Company’s construction project manager The induction ceremony was held March 16 at Manny’s Bar in Maurepas.

“I’m not good at public speaking,” Moran laughed. “But it was emotional for me to see a lot of musicians that I had played with there for the ceremony.”

Moran’s musician father, Charles Ray Moran Sr., introduced him to

music and guitar strumming when he was 8 years old.

“My first memories are sitting on the bandstand with my dad while he played,” Charley Moran said. “I got my first six-string steel guitar at eight years old, but I couldn’t play it. My dad gave me one of his old basses.

“He taught me a few things and then the bass became my instrument.”

What followed was decades of playing guitar and keyboard with numerous bands including Mike

Pro wrestling 80s-style stops at Gonzales VFW

Wrestling nostalgia from the 1980s under neon lights was the main event for Pro Wrestling 225’s VHS Wrestling event June 21 at VFW Post 3693 in Gonzales.

With Game 1 of the LSU-Coastal Carolina baseball championship series on televisions in the background, approximately 200 wrestling fans focused on the live wrestling action throughout the night.

The VHS wrestling event is one of many veterans’ programs fundraisers the post has hosted over the past couple of years

The post reached out to Pro Wrestling 225 in hopes of attracting wrestling fans looking for ‘80s nostalgia to Gonzales.

“The theme for this event is a throwback to our childhood,” VFW Post 3693 Auxiliary President Antoinette Nolen said. “Getting to

see a wrestling event in our local community is a special treat.”

VFW Post 3693 has hosted out-of-the-box fundraisers such as vendor pop-up events, comedy shows and cornhole tournaments.

“Our post has become very popular,” Nolen added. “It takes volunteers and many hours behind the scenes to plan these events. Our members and auxiliary make it happen.

Proceeds from events, such as the VHS Wrestling, benefit the post’s veterans’ programs.

Pro Wrestling 225 has worked with VFW Post 3693 in the past and teamed once again for the VHS Wrestling night.

“It’s been a good relationship with the VFW, and we love their hospitality,” Jordy Pujol, of Pro Wrestling 225, said.

The event replicated vintage ‘80s wrestling matches complete with ringside commentators, a heavy metal guitarist, and tag-team

competitions which featured vintage wrestling moves.

Pro Wrestling 225 has been consistently attracting fans through its YouTube Channel “PW225 Unleashed,” Pujol said.

PW225 Unleashed is a free YouTube channel featuring Pro Wrestling 225 matches, such as the VHS Wrestling event.

The VHS Wrestling concept has circulated through other wrestling promotions and found its way to Pro Wrestling 225.

Fans of VHS Wrestling traveled to Gonzales to get a live look at the action.

“We’ve always wanted to check out a VHS event,” Nic Benon, of New Orleans, said.

“We’re big fans of retro wrestling.”

Benon, 31, attended the event dressed as Mexican pro wrestler Pénta, along with Grand Isle resident Steven Ledet.

“We’ve heard about VHS Wrestling and we wanted to see it live and in-person,” Ledet

said.

Wrestlers performing included Chaz Spencer Adams, “Juice Man” Juice Jennings, the Killjoys tag team and the Da Russell Twins. Guitarist Hayden Kimball, of the band Voice of the Enemy, performed the national anthem.

One of the referees for the evening was crowd favorite George “Red Shoes” Strong. Upcoming events hosted by VFW Post 3693 are:

n Boogie Down the Bayou — July 13

n Salute the Troops concert, featuring the Bellamy Brothers — Aug. 10 n Veterans Charity Golf Tournament at Top Golf — Sept. 11 For more information about Pro Wrestling 225 visit www.facebook.com/prowrestling225. For information about upcoming events at VFW Post 3693, visit www.vfw3693.org.

St. Amant Gator standout now leading own team

A former St. Amant Gator softball standout will be leading her own team with the promotion of Sophie Smith from assistant to head coach at nearby Assumption High School. Smith takes over for Hodge Thibodaux, who led the Mustangs to the finals in Division II non select this past spring. Smith was certainly a big part of their success and is very excited about becoming head coach.

“Assumption has talent and I want to put my handprint on the program and continue to build on the success we had. We lose some key players and some leadership, but I fully expect girls will step into leadership roles and bring their talent with them. We have some big shoes to fill with seven graduating and I am eager to see how amazing this team can do. I am confident they will put the work in for this program to continue its success”, said Smith.

Smith was an all-district and all metro player for coach Amy Pitre at St. Amant from 2017-2021. The Gators won three district championships and a state championship in 2019 while Smith was there. Pitre was very complimentary of Smith as a player “Sophie did everything I asked her to do to the best of her ability She played second base on the 2019 state championship team and then moved to catcher the next two years. She always knew her role and accepted it, consistently doing her best as a player and a teammate,” Pitre said. After graduating from St. Amant, Smith went on to play at Webber International University where she excelled and realized that she wanted to continue with the game of softball, but as a coach.

“I started coaching travel softball and will be starting my second year at the high school level. I am thankful that Assumption gave me an opportunity to continue coaching the sport I love,” Smith said. Smith knows the sacrifices and time it took for her to get to this point and wanted to make sure people know that she appreciated it.

“My parents have supported me through my softball journey and now support me as I have transitioned into coaching. They have sacrificed and I would not be in this position without their support. I have so many coaches and mentors that have helped mold me as a player and a coach. The top of the list is Coach Amy Pitre, my high school coach at St. Amant. She is an amazing coach and my mentor on this new journey My family and friends are so supportive and have helped me along my journey,” Smith said.

This former Gator plans to use what she has learned from her mentors and give young athletes the same opportunity she had. “I am looking forward to building this program from where we are and taking it where it needs to be,” Smith said.
