Walk raises awareness of drug abuse deaths

Ascension Parish families who have lost loved ones to drug addiction walked in remembrance during the fourth annual Millie Mattered Gonzales Walk at the Gonzales Jambalaya Park April 13.

The drug awareness organization, Millie Mattered Overdose & Addiction Advocacy, teamed up with Drug Epidemic Awareness Walk Across America for the event.

Around 100 people participated in the walk, including Gonzales Mayor Tim Riley

The walk included guest speakers and food. Free Narcan and fentanyl test strips were passed out as well. Lilly Harvey, executive director and founder of Millie Mattered, began the organi-

“When I first lost her, I was devastated and in shock, but I knew I was not the only person that had experienced this,” Harvey said. “I looked around to find an advocacy group to get involved with because I knew the drug epidemic was starting to ignite, but there was none in the state of Louisiana.”

zation and Louisiana walks in 2017 after her 28-year-old daughter, Lillie Camille “Millie” Harvey, died from an accidental fentanyl overdose.

“When I first lost her, I was

devastated and in shock, but I knew I was not the only person that had experienced this,” Harvey said. “I looked around to find an advocacy group to get involved with because I knew the drug epidemic was starting to ignite, but there was none in the state of Louisiana.”

Harvey partnered with the Drug Epidemic Awareness Walk Across America and organized an overdose awareness event at the Alexandria city park where Millie died.

“That one event has grown into 28 events yearly,” Harvey said. “We hold 14 drug epidemic walks in the spring around the state, as well as 14 Millie Mattered Moonlight Memorial in the summer where we light up the darkness of addiction.”

mann has endured some trials and tribulations to get to this point, and he likely would not trade any of it. He says his faith, family and his baseball family are his rock.

“This is my first year as a varsity player helping my team as we get ready for the playoffs,” Boeckmann said.

“I got cut my freshmen year, transferred to ACHS, sat out and got injured my junior year My injury made me question some things; I thought God was telling me baseball wasn’t for me. The mental aspect of it is hard, but through my faith, my family and my coaches and teammates, things are falling into place.”

ACHS (22-10) won its fifth consecutive district title with Boeckmann leading the way with a triple and two runs batted in against their rival St. John, a 4-0 victory The Bulldogs are a six seed heading into the division four select playoffs, they will host Riverside on Tuesday, April 29.

Getting back to Sulphur and the state tournament after an early playoff exit last season is on the mind of Boeckmann and his teammates.

“Our mindset is focus on our game, listen to our coaches and play with mental sharpness. We respect our opponent; our mission is to play hard and put pressure on our opponent. I feel like if we continue to come together as a team, we are unstoppable, we cannot beat ourselves. The strongest weapon is the mind, don’t turn it on yourself, stay positive and be ready to play ball,” Boeckmann said.

Lilly Harvey executive director and founder of Millie Mattered Overdose & Addiction Advocacy left, and Gonzales Mayor Tim Riley lead participants of the Millie Mattered Walk at the Jambalaya Park

Harvey’s goal for starting the organization was to help others who have lost loved ones to drug addictions to know they are not alone

“I wanted to create some type of memorial for those who had gone too soon,” Harvey added. “I feel like their faces should be seen in their stories to be told. That they could help make a difference in someone else’s life.

The Millie Mattered walks feature 11 Louisiana banners with almost 700 faces of Louisiana residents who lost their lives to drug addiction. Harvey, determined to see those responsible for her daughter’s death receive punishment, collaborated with politicians to pass “Millie’s Law.”

“The man that sold the drug to Millie was convicted of negligent homicide and was the first conviction for an overdose death due to a drug deception in the south,” Harvey said. “So many families reached out to me to see how I accomplished that, and the truth is the only thing I can say is God.

“But I knew I had to do something, so I went to my local senator Glenn Womack of District 32 and together we came up with a bill. Millie‘s law passed and was signed by Gov John Bel Edwards in August 2023. The bill made fentanyl and heroin a crime of violence if you sold it to someone and it caused death or bodily harm.” Harvey remembers Millie as being “Marilyn Monroe beautiful.” She loved competitive gymnastics and was a talented artist.

The Gonzales walk was Harvey’s last town walk

The Millie Mattered group is expanding to college campuses to bring drug addiction awareness to young adults.

“As I make this (Gonzales) my last walk, I feel like we have accomplished a purpose and that is to get the overdose rate decreased in Louisiana right now,” Harvey said. “It’s down 25% but the demographics say

that our 18 to 28-year-olds are still a high statistic.

“That is why I am moving this advocacy onto college campuses next year

We want to reach that age group. We also want to make sure that Narcan is available for them. Remember, you cannot rehabilitate

someone who is dead.”

The Gonzales Millie Mattered walk also included guest speakers who discussed the importance of

drug addiction awareness.

“Probation and Parole cares about drug awareness because our main goal is public safety,” Louisiana Department of Corrections Probation and Parole officer Heather Pennington said. “We’re not making this area any safer if we are not addressing the needs of the public like drug addiction.” Mariah, a local fentanyl overdose survivor, spoke about her experience with addiction and the importance of reaching out for help.

“I grew up with a normal childhood but got involved with the wrong people at the wrong time and began doing the wrong things,” Mariah said. “I knew it was not who I wanted to be

“I reached out, got a sponsor and started working the addiction steps and by the grace of God I have not found it necessary to use drugs for two years now.” For more information about the Millie Mattered Overdose & Addiction Advocacy, visit https://milliematteredoverdoseandaddic.godaddysites.com/.

Boeckmann is hitting over 300 and leads the team in runs batted in along with two home runs. Senior Mace Melancon leads the pitching staff along with sophomore John Rob Daigle, senior Pete Harris, junior Chris Anthens and senior Luke Husers. Several Bulldogs are hitting as well with Boeckmann including Husers, Daigle, senior Gavin Gregoire, junior Evan Casso, senior Austin Paine, junior Vaughn Blanchard, senior Peyton Dunn, plus sophomores Cy Landry and Johnny Viallon.

Boeckmann credits his coaches with his development along with his preparation for his senior year

“Coach Gee, coach Todd, coach Jacob, coach Henry and coach Lasseigne have been phenomenal with us,” he said. “They want our mentality to be of not caring who we play, our opponent will know that we will fight tooth and nail to win a game. I want to thank coach Gee and coach Todd for believing in me I have connected with coach Jacob; he has been a huge factor in our success. His enthusiasm is contagious with everyone, he believes in us.” Head coach Gee Cassard likes what he has seen from his senior outfielder.

“Rhett is one of those guys that never complained, just kept working, that is what team is all about,” Cassard said. “Now he is delivering in big spots for us. What Rhett is doing now is special, it shows our younger players what can happen when you stay humble and keep grinding.”

Dealing with adversity and an injury has proved to test Boeckmann, and all the adversity has made him the player he is today.

“Taking cuts until my

hands bleed, running every day, lifting and repetition is what I have done to get ready,” Boeckmann said. “My dad and his talks along with praying have been what I lean on. You can either sulk in your failures and give up or get up.

“I choose to brush myself off and get up. I was tired of defeat, one day something just snapped. I promised myself that I will prevail and be the best player I could be and prove all the doubters wrong.

As my dad tells me, God gives his toughest battles to his strongest warriors,” Boeckmann added.

The Bulldogs are one of several teams with aspirations to win another state championship, the last coming in 2018. The journey begins on Tuesday, April 29 and the hope is finish it in Sulphur on May 14.

Cassard is pleased with his teams journey so far

“We head into the playoffs battle-tested and bonded, tighter than ever Whether it’s the top of the order or the bullpen, every player is prepared to step up. Our culture is built on trust and a shared purpose, a belief that no moment is too big when you believe in each other,” Cassard said.

Boeckmann’s journey and how he wants to be remembered is unique, one he will never forget.

“My journey is all about never giving up on the game I love, never tap, fight until the last out no matter what the outcome will be,” Boeckmann said.

“I can overcome anything through Jesus Christ. To younger players, my advice is to study until your eyes cross, practice until the coaches tell you to stop, be the first one in and last one to leave. I want to again thank my coaches, my teammates and my family

“My mom and dad have sacrificed so much for me to have the best training. For that I want to say thank

you and I will always be appreciative of them. I get to represent them, my coaches, teammates and ACHS, I am pretty lucky,” Boeckmann said.

As far as plans after graduation, Boeckmann would love to continue playing the game he loves while getting an education.

“I am looking for that offer, one team to believe in me. My dream is to play college baseball, get a degree and play as long as I can. I won’t stop working until I achieve that. I want to enjoy this ride with my teammates and coaches, challenge for a state championship and make my family proud,” he said.
