A proposed DEMCO power substation near some Denham Springs homes is moving forward, despite residents’ concerns about it.
The Livingston Parish Planning Commission met Thursday solely to discuss the preliminary site plan for the utility provider’s substation.
The substation would transmit electricity and would be located off the highway in Denham Springs near Ferry Landing and Greenleaves drives.
Clifton Brown, who lives near the proposed site, suggested an alternative site for the substation about a quarter mile away closer to the transmission line.
“We’re just trying to get it out of our front
yard,” Brown said. The property Brown proposed is owned by Denham Springs resident Kurt Freeman.
“It’s available,” Freeman said of the property. After multiple evaluations, including an engineering analysis program, the proposed location was the most optimal for the substation, said Matt Gibson DEMCO’s director of engineering. In addition, Gibson said the proposed location

on which poll you look at, the Live Oak baseball team was ranked as high as 12th last week. To be clear, that’s not the LHSAA power rankings or a Louisiana sports writers poll. That’s where the Eagles sit nationally with a deep and experienced team that hit the ground running this season. Live Oak’s

Oak. The Eagles won 2 of 3 games against Catholic High, 2 of 3 from Teurlings Catholic, and they also have a win over Barbe. All three have no more than four losses on the season and are rated near the top of their respective LHSAA power rankings.
Catholic and Barbe are also among the Louisiana schools that appear in some of the national rankings. Sports Illustrated had Live Oak 12th last week while Perfect Game had the Eagles at No. 26.
Live Oak coach Jesse Cassard said his team was aware of the attention it was receiving.
“Its cool to be nationally ranked,” he said. “I haven’t talked to anybody so I guess they’re just grabbing results and looking at who we’ve played.
“The cool thing is the kids aren’t like, ‘Oh, we’re nationally ranked so we can just show up and beat teams.’ They really come to play because they know they could get beat any day We don’t have to convince them of that.”
The Eagles have been beaten, but not very often. And the teams who have accomplished the feat are, by and large, very good teams in their own right.
“We lost to some good teams with some really good pitchers. It’s not like we lost games we shouldn’t have,” Cassard said. “That’s what I’m excited about. We’re winning all the games we should and we’re not dropping games where we fall apart making errors or walking guys. It’s been pretty clean. We’ve just got to keep it going.”
Once Live Oak reaches the state playoffs rankings won’t matter, but beating good teams will.

is a “football field and a half away from front yards.”
The utility started scouting the area at the beginning of 2023. The site DEMCO settled on checked of all the boxes it needed, he said, noting to find another location could take a while. Livingston planning commission chair Kathy Long said residents have made it seem like the power company did not take their views into consideration.
“We’ve had considerable public input,” Long said. DEMCO employees at the Thursday planning meeting said they think the proposed location substation is secluded enough from area residents.
Although talk about the specific location of the substation dominated the meeting, residents voiced worries about the aesthetics, noise, environmental effects of the project and possible future expansion problems.
Commission member
Brian Clemmons said he understands certain residents don’t want the substation near their homes. However, he said, the commission’s purpose is asking developers if they meet Livingston parish ordinance requirements rather than arguing over aesthetics. A handful of residents also had voiced their opposition at previous commission meeting.
The majority of the commission approved a substitute motion to approve the preliminary substation site plan — with contingencies. Those being that DEMCO answers residents’ concerns and potentially does more studies to ease residents’ minds
The commission eventually will vote on whether to approve the final site plan for the power substation
