A 58-day Carnival season that began less than a week after the tragic New Year’s Day attack on Bourbon Street and included a triumphant Super Bowl week in New Orleans finally came to a close Tuesday. The celebration that lasted longer than most ended in a bit of a rush, as organizers canceled or modified parades to wrap up before blustery weather arrived midafternoon. A steady breeze increased throughout the morning and gave way to strong winds and a line of thunderstorms later in the day. Forecasters had predicted dangerous gusts and possible tornadoes. To avoid the elements, Zulu and Rex moved up their start times, shortened their routes and cut some bands and marchCARNIVAL ing groups from their processions. On the northshore, the Covington Lions, Mystic Krewe of Covington and Bogue Falaya parades started early and canceled afterparties. Despite the forecast, tens of thousands took to the streets to celebrate Fat Tuesday. They were rewarded all morning with breezy and mild weather under partly cloudy skies. “We were supposed to have bad weather, but I don’t know where it is,” said Palestine Riles, the manager of the Inn on Ursulines, as raucous revelers walked past the open doors of the French Quarter boutique hotel. The city’s Mardi Gras celebration began before dawn, when the North Side Skull and Bones Gang knocked on doors in Treme. The tradition of waking up neighbors — along with ancestral spirits — dates back at least to the late 1800s. Hundreds of costumed observers followed along as

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump vowed Tuesday to keep up his campaign of “swift and unrelenting action” in reorienting the nation’s economy, immigration and foreign policy in an unyielding address to Congress and the nation that left Democratic legislators to register their dissent with stone faces, placards calling out “lies” and one legislaä Louisiana tor’s ejection. Trump’s prime-time congressmen speech was the latest invite guests marker in his takeover to Trump of the nation’s capital, where the Republican-led speech. House and Senate have PAGE 9A done little to restrain the president as he and his allies work to slash the size of the federal government and remake America’s place in the world. The more than 90-minute address added up to an defiant sales pitch for the policies that he promised during his campaign and leaned into during his first weeks back in office. Trump pledged to keep delivering sweeping changes to the country, rescuing it from what he described as destruction and mistakes left by his predecessor while repeatedly needling Democratic lawmakers who protested his remarks. Emboldened after overcoming impeachments in his first term and criminal prosecutions in between his two administrations and with a tight grip on the Republican-controlled Congress, Trump has embarked on a mission to dismantle parts of the federal government, remake the relationship with America’s allies and spark a North American trade war that is compounding economic uncertainty. “It has been nothing but swift and unrelenting action,” Trump said of his opening
