“My staff shopped for shoes, clothing and toys,

and I purchased the nonperishable food,” Sanchez said.

“Sometimes the families are overwhelmed by what the volunteers have done for them. You never know what someone is going through. This program helps families know that someone cares about them, and we hope we bring a little positivity into their lives.”

LA Adopt-A-Family also

sponsors a school uniform drive held between the start of the school year and mid-September.

“We target kids, again with the help of school counselors, who need uniforms,” Buckel said. “In 2024, we provided over 740 students with new uniforms.”

“It was all just beautiful and much more than I expected,” she said. “All I wanted to do was to put a big smile on the faces of my grandchildren. And for them to know to always have hope that people do care about them.”

Tags can fall off or be removed, but the chip will always be there, and it gives a lost pet the best chance of getting back home. It is important to remember that getting the chip implanted is only the first step. It must then be registered in order for it to be fully effective in the event that a pet gets lost.

RESOLUTIONS,TOO: New Year’s resolutions are for pets as well. How many of us are starting a diet this month? If the pets are looking extra fluffy, now is a great time to evaluate their food, portions and the number of treats given daily.

If the cat or dog needs to shed a few pounds, feeding a balanced diet in the proper portions is a great way to get them fit and trim.

Incorporating the pets into the “New Year, New You” exercise routine is good way to stick to those goals for the long-term. The benefits are two-fold: We get to enjoy quality time with our pets, and it gets everyone off the couch and outside moving. As we all know, it’s easier to maintain a fitness routine when we have an accountability partner, and the pets won’t charge a membership fee.

Most shelters have volunteer opportunities for individuals, high school students and those needing community services hours, church groups, college groups and more.

Foster: Want to give pet ownership a test drive before making the commitment to being a pet parent full time? Or, would you like to give a homeless pet a break from the shelter and help them learn the ins and outs of living in a home? Animal shelters and rescues need loving homes to provide safe and temporary living arrangements for pets.

Donate: If time is a factor that prevents volunteering or fostering, consider donating supplies or making a monetary donation to your local shelter or rescue. We all know how expensive it is to take care of our pets. Imagine the food and vet bills for a rescue full of cats and dogs. Cleaning supplies, newspaper, toys, food and treats are also always needed.

Adopt: Now that the holidays are behind us and we are getting back to normal routines, the time is right to welcome a new family member into the home. Shelters and rescues are overflowing with amazing pets waiting for a home to call their own.

Grand Isle opens new public fishing pier The town of Grand Isle has opened a new 960-foot public fishing pier. Along with the 990-foot Grand Isle Fishing Pier next to Bridge Side Marina, which opened in summer 2023, the piers are free and open to the public. Located just before entering the island on Cheniere Caminada, the pier provides spots for fishing, sightseeing and enjoying Grand Isle’s coastal views.

COLLEGES BEST FOR VETS: Loyola University, Xavier University of Louisiana and LSU have been included in the 2024 Best for Vets: Colleges rankings released by Military Times. The list considers services and practical information available to help veterans make important decisions about career planning and using the education benefits they earned. FULBRIGHT AWARD: Caroline Calogero, a 2020 graduate of Mount Carmel Academy, is the recipient of a Fulbright U.S. Student Award for the 2024-2025 academic year. She will serve as an English teaching assistant in South Korea.

Calogero, a 2024 graduate of Rhodes Calogero College in Memphis, was an economics and religious studies double major.

UNIVERSITY OF NEW ORLEANS: Debra Karhson, an assistant professor of psychology at UNO, has received a 2024 Healthy Longevity Catalyst Award, designed to stimulate research and entrepreneurism in support of healthy longevity. The award, from the National Academy of Medicine, includes $50,000 to research social connection in aging adults. Karhson is one of 16 project leaders around the world to receive the award. She will lead a project called “The Neurological Mechanisms of Social Connection in Aging Adults.” Karhson holds a doctorate in neuroscience from Tulane and heads the Brains in Learning and Social Synchrony Lab at UNO. NUNEZ COMMUNITY COLLEGE: During the Spring semester starting Jan. 14, Nunez will open two classes to the community as noncredit courses for a one-time price. Those participating will attend Intro to Ceramics and Intro to Digital Art alongside students taking the courses for college credits. Assignments and grading criteria will be the same for both groups. Intro to Digital Art will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays, 11:30 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. The cost is $75 per student, $25 for students aged 60 years and older. Intro to Ceramics will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. The cost is $189 per student, $125 for 60 years and older. Nunez.edu/STEAM. UNIVERSITY OF NEW ORLEANS: A new bachelor of science degree program in neuroscience will begin in fall 2025 at UNO. The degree prepares students for employment or graduate school, including medical school and allied health programs, in the field of neuroscience, which is the study of the nervous system.

The program is interdisciplinary, with courses taught by faculty from psychology, biological sciences, chemistry, computer science, mathematics and philosophy.

Dominican students adopt families for Christmas As part of St. Mary’s Dominican High School’s annual Adopt-a-Family program, 109 residents at the Audubon Retirement Village, 38 from Metro Center for Community Advocacy, 14 from Catholic Charities, and 12 from the community and Dominican’s neighbors received gifts provided by students in their religion classes and through donations from school personnel.

Named as award winners were Sara Fernandez, Academic Achievement Award for highest GPA in all nursing courses; Leylah Rivera,

Florence Nightingale Award, chosen by the faculty as the student who demonstrates the qualities of the founder of modern nursing; and Derriyell Carter, Spirit Award, chosen by the students of the graduating class to recognize the classmate who has motivated them.

The Practical Nursing program is accredited by Louisiana State Board of Practical Nursing Examiners. Brittney Zaffuto is Nunez nursing director.

Students interested in applying to the program for fall 2025 can take prerequisite courses in spring 2025. Applications and registration for the spring semester are open now, and classes begin Jan. 14.
