Two killed in car crash near Lakeland
Highway tragedy By SARAH MARTIN
CAPE York and Mossman communities are in mourning after a horror car crash on the Mulligan Highway north of Lakeland last Wednesday left two dead, three injured and another in a serious condition. The group’s station wagon was
travelling north near Boggy Creek Bridge when it left the road and flipped several times. The driver, one passenger and a dog were pronounced dead at the crash site. A man in his 20s and a woman in her 40s have been confirmed dead, while a 48-year-old man with serious pelvis, chest and head
injuries was helicoptered from the highway to Cairns Base Hospital, where he was in a stable condition. Two other passengers, a man and a woman both aged in their 20s, were taken by ambulance to Cooktown Hospital with back injuries and the sixth occupant escaped with minor injuries. Police, ambulance and firefight-
ers from Cooktown attended the single-vehicle crash, as well as Lakeland’s first responders, with the highway blocked for some time. Police have not confirmed the cause of the crash, or whether the vehicle was equipped with seats for six people, but Forensic Crash Unit investigations are continuing.
