Two killed in car crash near Lakeland

Highway tragedy

CAPE York and Mossman communities are in mourning after a horror car crash on the Mulligan Highway north of Lakeland last Wednesday left two dead, three injured and another in a serious condition.

The group’s station wagon was

travelling north near Boggy Creek Bridge when it left the road and flipped several times.

The driver, one passenger and a dog were pronounced dead at the crash site.

A man in his 20s and a woman in her 40s have been confirmed dead, while a 48-year-old man with serious pelvis, chest and head

injuries was helicoptered from the highway to Cairns Base Hospital, where he was in a stable condition.

Two other passengers, a man and a woman both aged in their 20s, were taken by ambulance to Cooktown Hospital with back injuries and the sixth occupant escaped with minor injuries.

Police, ambulance and firefight-

ers from Cooktown attended the single-vehicle crash, as well as Lakeland’s first responders, with the highway blocked for some time.

Police have not confirmed the cause of the crash, or whether the vehicle was equipped with seats for six people, but Forensic Crash Unit investigations are continuing.

Call for improvements ahead of Diabetes Day WITH more than 2600 Cape York and Torres Strait residents living with diabetes, Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service is urging people to take care of their health ahead of World Diabetes Day on 14 November.

Primary Health Care Programs North director Maleta Abednego said Thursday Island had the largest concentration of people with diabetes in the Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service region.

“Thursday Island is home to 381 people with diabetes – 336 of whom are Indigenous people

– which is about 14.6 per cent of the total number of diabetics on our register in our health service,’’ Ms Abdednego said.

“Across the health service as a whole, we currently have about 2608 active diabetes clients on our register.

“Of these, 1113 clients are on Cape York and 1495 clients in the Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula Area region.

“Of the 1113 Cape York clients, 933 are Indigenous people and the remainder non-Indigenous.”

health choices and physical activity were a great way to avoid getting diabetes and could also help manage diabetes for those who already had it.

“If people with diabetes eat healthy kai kai, have a healthy body weight, and are physically active they can be strong and healthy,” she said.

She warned people with diabetes who ate unhealthy food and didn’t exercise were risking serious complications and ongoing poor health.

“They will suffer complications like stroke; blindness,

heart disease, kidney disease, nerve damage, foot problems and risk having amputations.’’

Diabetes currently is the world’s fastest-growing chronic disease and is already the seventh leading cause of death in Australia.

“Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are particularly at risk of developing diabetes and this genetic predisposition is compounded by a range of other factors such as generational disadvantage, poor nutrition, obesity and lack of exercise,” Ms Abednego said.

TELSTRA will be upgrading its mobile base station in Lockhart River this week with additional infrastructure to bring 4G services to the community.

The works will require a series of temporary outages or reduction in mobile coverage during daylight hours until November 16.

“There’s never a good time to undertake this sort of work but once it’s completed, it will mean better mobile services for local residents,” regional general manager Rachel Cliffe said.

Telstra mobile customers may have already received text messages advising of the upcoming work.

Ms Cliffe said while crew need to work during daylight for safety, sites will only be switched off when necessary.

“Where possible we will just be switching off the parts of the tower we are working on, leaving the rest operational. While coverage and capacity will decline during this time, we want to keep the amount of time the site is off air to an absolute minimum,” she said.

Landline services, NBN internet services and mobile coverage from other providers will not be impacted. Any calls to 000 from a Telstra mobile when the site is off air will automatically be diverted to any working mobile network.

“Telstra does have other mobile base stations located close by in Lockhart River which may help provide some coverage on the outskirts of town, but most of our mobile coverage for this area does come from this base station so there will be an impact.”

AFTER nine years of work and many more decades of fighting for land and recognition, the Kuku Warra, Possum, Thaypan and Wik and Wik Way people had their Native Titles determined in Cairns on Thursday.

The Cape York United #1 Claim was filed on behalf of the Traditional Owners of Cape York in 2014 covering almost 55 per cent of the region, and the four groups were the fifth to have their native title recognised as part of the claim.

Kuku Warra Traditional Owner Des Rumble explained the importance of the day’s event.

“It’s confirmation of our peo-

ple’s Country in Australian law.

We’ve always known this is Aboriginal land and will always be Aboriginal land, but we have to get it put into law and a determination does that,” he said.

“Everything we’ve already known is now being officially confirmed so it means a lot to us.”

Mr Rumble and fellow Kuku Warra Traditional Owner Leann Alberts said the determination is not only important for them, but also for their children and generations to come.

Ms Alberts, who travelled to the determination ceremony from Rockhampton, is one of

many Indigenous peoples affected by the stolen generation.

“Me and my family, we’ve never lived on the land and because of my mum being taken away, we’ve lost our culture and our belonging,” she said.

Mr Rumble explained that the determination will help their children to have a sense of being and belonging.

“Culture sits at the heart of who we are as a people and land is a part of that culture. If young people don’t know who they are and where they belong, it’s very hard for them to get on with their lives and make something if it because they’re always wonder-

ing,” he said.

He urged Australians not to give into fear through misinformation.

“Native Titles can sit quite comfortably alongside other leases. The native title determination will change things for us as a people because we can move forward, but it changes nothing for non-Indigenous people,” he explained.

He said he is looking forward to continuing consulting on issues with everyone involved.

“We are moving forward as peoples and we will do it with non-Indigenous people as well: our friends, our supporters.”

Alleged Weipa child rapist found dead while on bail WEIPA man Bradley Allen McRae has been found dead just days after police charged him with a second series of child rape and drug offences.

The 46-year-old was arrested in Weipa on 27 September and charged with two counts of rape, five of procuring a young person, 10 of supplying drugs to a minor and two of indecent treatment of a child under 16.

He was also charged with grooming a child and unlawful carnal knowledge of a child under 16.

He appeared in the Weipa Magistrates Court on 28 September and was granted bail with conditions to reside in Cairns.

Electronic devices were seized during his arrest and on 26 October McRae was handed a further five counts of supplying dangerous

drugs to a minor, 10 counts of use of a carriage service to access child abuse material and one count of possessing child abuse material.

McRae was due to face the Cairns Magistrates Court later this month where police were going to allege the youths were groomed, indecently assaulted and supplied with dangerous drugs, including methylam-

phetamine. Entsch speaks out against bans

WARREN Entsch has echoed concerns on the gillnets ban raised by Shadow Environment and Fisheries Minister, Senator Jonno Duniam, and Shadow Minister for Northern Australia, Senator Susan McDonald, at a recent Senate Estimates hearing in Canberra.

The Member for Leichhardt said the Albanese Government’s mismanagement of Australia’s commercial fishing industry marks a betrayal of regional Queensland

fishers and their communities.

The hearing revealed that the Federal and Queensland Labour Governments acted to ban gillnets without consulting relevant federal bodies like the Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) and the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation (FRDC).

“It’s incomprehensible how critical decisions are being made without even consulting the bodies specifically tasked with advising on these issues,” Mr Entsch said.

“This ill-advised gillnets ban

will have severe ramifications on the cost of seafood, hitting already stretched household budgets hard.

People who can’t catch their own fish shouldn’t have to pay the price for this government’s poor decisions.”

He said that Australia has some of the “most sustainably managed fisheries in the world”, and that a move to ban gillnets threatens to “push us towards sourcing unsustainable alternatives”.

“This move is purely political, showing a complete disregard for

the sustainable and responsible fisheries management our local industry is known for.”

He strongly urged the Albanese Government to review the bans and to start meaningful engagement with stakeholders.

“The future of our fisheries, the livelihood of our fishers and the financial wellbeing of ordinary Australians are at stake,” he said.

Katter’s Australia Party Leader and Member for Traeger Robbie Katter also slammed the Federal Government’s involvement with

UNESCO in the ban.

“We have a government that is intent on shutting down communities and shutting down industries all in the name of UNESCO and leaving behind a trail of destruction,” he said.

“It’s now up to the North Queensland Labour MPs to decide if they are going to stand by their constituents and push back on the government about this, or are they going to stand by and watch as their electorates economically shut down.”

Thieves target Cooktown bakery

TWO thieves have been caught in the act by an early morning baker as they burnt, hacked and cut their way into the Cooktown Bakery office last Wednesday.

Bakery owner Jana Whittaker said, thankfully, the baker’s arrival for his 3am shift interrupted the two young men, dressed in black, before they could gain access to her office.

“He pulled up out the front and saw a couple of shadows running across. It was so close, quite dramatic actually,” Ms Whittaker said.

The pair ran through an undercover children’s play area at the side of the bakery, leaping over a tall fence into the neighbouring caravan park, with the second would-be thief nearly getting caught.

“The second guy was pretty large and had a bit of difficulty getting over the fence,” she said.

“But they got away and my baker chased them down the back.”

The thieves made off with the bakery tip jar containing $60, which was going to buy staff Lotto tickets, as well as a donation tin for the Cape York Folk Club, and left a smashed hole in an internal door.

“As they were scaling the fence, they dropped [the Cape York Folk Club tin], so we managed to retrieve that,” Ms Whittaker said.

“Probably give them another half an hour and they would have

gotten into the door to my office, then who knows what they would have taken, maybe the computer.”

Ms Whittaker said it was her third break in since moving to the Charlotte Street location three years ago.

“It’s one a year, and it’s much the same time of year each time.

I’m not sure if it’s mango madness, but I’m a bit over it,” she said.

Ms Whittaker spent hours cleaning broken glass and preparing the bakery to open as usual at 6 am following the break in.

“You have to trade as usual.

That day I had multiple orders and the community relies on us.”

VR helps to immortalise Country

THE Olkola people gained their land back through a native title claim in 2014 and are now using digital technology, such as virtual reality and augmented reality to capture their cultural stories.

The Getting Back on Country project is led by Traditional Owners of the Olkola Aboriginal Corporation (OAC) and the Olkola Rangers in collaboration with researchers at the University of Melbourne.

Olkola Traditional Owner and OAC administration and finance officer Shania Ross said it was a way to bring Country to people who can no longer get out there.

“We have a lot of people that are starting to get older and travelling out to Country just isn’t possible for some people,” she explained.

The virtual reality 3D storytelling has the possibility of helping Traditional Owners with dementia or disabilities experience being on Country again.

“Like our great-grandmother, she had dementia. When she was starting to get on she’d talk a lot about her childhood living and walking on Country, that’s what made her happy,” she said.

“It’s one of those things that can just help with their mental state.

They can go home without having to sit in a car for five or six hours.”

The collaboration began with Nukakurra walking trail, a cultural

story place with a loop walk that passes several significant sites.

“We know our old people used to go all the time and walk. For the project recording, we had two of our Elders walking around and telling stories.”

One of the Elders, Uncle Mike, created a story of a grandfather and grandmother walking the Country with their grandchildren and sharing their knowledge - just as it would have happened prior to colonisation. The other, Uncle Jack, told the story in language.

“We hoped that by being able to put the goggles on and do the trail, it would immortalise Country for people who can’t travel out,” she explained.

The digitised stories, as well as Olkola artefacts, are to be kept and shared at the Cultural Knowledge Centre to be built on Country.

She explained that some culturally sensitive places would be just for Olkola people, while others could be shared and used to help Olkola tourism.

NRM wants your fire knowledge

THE Cape York Natural Resource Management (NRM) is calling for land owners and land managers to share how their fire planning and regimes are making an impact.

As part of the Woody Thickening Project, the NRM is looking to put together educational resources on fire management and its affect on vegetation.

“We greatly value the knowledge that already exists across Cape York Peninsula, and would like to engage with all land management sectors to hear experiences, the causes and effects of fire regimes, how vegetation is affected and the impacts, both positive and negative, on land management operations,” Cape York NRM Fore Coordinator Andrew Drenen said.

“We are calling and emailing properties and inviting them to take part in a review of how vegetation thickening is managed with fire, observe how before and after operations compare, and even impacts on carbon farming methodologies.”

Vegetation thickening is a phenomenon where certain plant species can dominate and choke out native grassland to the detriment of pastoral production and biodiversity.

gimes would have “kept the ecology in good balance”, but different land management practices these days meant some areas experience the thickening.

“Plenty of people still do very skilled fire management, so it’s a matter of learning from them, the Indigenous sector and the national parks,” he said.

“It doesn’t hurt to pull the knowledge together and spread that amongst others.”

He explained that the project will begin to gather information late November or early December as that is the time for storm burns or early wet season burns.

Storm burning takes place after the first rains have arrived when the conditions are not as risky and extreme.

He said the project would also collect data on an ongoing basis as well by monitoring sites to observe any changes in vegetation.

“That is a very long-term thing, to have enough data to indicate if any particular fire regime is beneficial or detrimental,” he said.

The fire management guide is set to be released mid-2024.

Festival brings smiles to Aurukun THE Aurukun community gathered to celebrate the time before the wet season begins at the annual Um Thurpak Festival last month.

The festival is one of several free events run by the Aurukun Shire Council.

Aurukun Mayor Keri Tamwoy said the Um Thurpak Festival was an opportunity for families to come together for a community social occasion.

“It is always pleasing to see the number of Aurukun Shire Council staff and community members who volunteer at these events, and I was especially proud to see the Kang Kang youth helping out with the barbecue,” she said.

Singer Justin Wellington returned this year to entertain the crowd alongside Jonathon Imani.

“We had a good crowd at Um Thurpak who danced the night away to Justin Wellington, a regular performer at our community events, and I thank him for continually coming back to entertain our community,” Cr Tamwoy said.

Cr Tamwoy said the community was now looking forward to other events, especially for Christmas.

Major milestone for Ely Bursary AS Rio Tinto celebrates two decades of the Ely Bursary, the inaugural recipient reflects on how the scheme’s financial support helped her on her life journey.

Weipa resident and Kaanju woman Sasha Busch said the Ely Bursary Education Assistance Scheme gave her the opportunity to pursue higher education, which was a struggle as a young single mother.

“I wouldn’t be where I am today without the help from the bursary,” she said.

“The education I was able to receive has given me so many opportunities in life and has allowed me to develop a career that lets me give back to the community.”

Ms Busch, who is now Rio Tinto Weipa’s Acting Superintendent for Indigenous Employment and Development, was the Ely Bursary’s inaugural recipient in 2005 and the first member of her family to graduate

from university. Ms Busch is encouraging others to utilise the support available from the Ely Bursary to help achieve their dreams.

“Just go for it, take the opportunity and grab it with both hands,” she said.

“Life is what you make it, find your happiness, your why and you’ll surprise yourself with how far you get.”

The Ely Bursary is awarded annually to local Indigenous students and community groups who have a traditional or historical connection to the Mapoon, Napranum or New Mapoon areas.

The bursary, which is managed by the Ely Coordination Committee, covers the cost of tuition and course fees or other equivalent educational assistance, as well as developmental support.

The next round of Ely Bursary assistance will be opening soon.

A FAIR SHARE FOR REGIONAL NEWS Regional Australian communities deserve local news as much as our big cities do.

Local independent newspapers still connect more than 80% of the country, but currently the commonwealth government invests close to 0% of its advertising budget here.

The federal government could help secure the future of regional news with zero extra cost by simply allocating a fairer share of government advertising to local and regional news services.

One page per week of important government information in regional newspapers would be a great start. This shouldn’t be controversial.

It’s a simple and fair solution for the future of regional news.

Turtle nets impacted by warming

THE Western Cape Turtle Threat Abatement Alliance (WCTTAA) has been busy training members in nest temperature monitoring techniques, addressing growing concerns about warming sand temperatures.

Data is being collected on the NESTOR app, a marine turtle nesting data collection tool that records GPS locations of current nests with an inbuilt map.

Over several months, Cape York Natural Resource Management (NRM) WCTTAA coordinator Dr Manuela Fischer assisted in member training by Ecologistics consultant Ben Jones.

“I think a lot of the ranger groups are very happy with the new NESTOR app. It’s very userfriendly, everyone is on top of it,” Dr Fischer said.

According to Cape York NRM, research is indicating that warming sand temperatures are having an impact on the sex ratio of Olive Ridley turtles, producing more female and fewer male hatchlings.

“We’ll be collating the data and reviewing it at our annual WCTTAA forum, and ironing out any glitches (on the app),” she said.

organised by Napranum’s Nanum Wungthim Land and Sea Rangers and Tangaroa Blue Foundation.

“I deployed 10 trackers at five nests to record the heat temperature,” she said.

With the help of an interested family participating in the cleanup, she placed the trackers under the sand – one near the nest and another next to the nest for com-

parison. “I have programmed the trackers to collect data every half hour for two months. That will be the trial this year, to see how the equipment works and what the temperatures are,” she said.

She explained that the chosen nests have purpose-built cages to protect the eggs from feral animals, and a shade cloth was placed over them to record any impacts to

temperature.

“It’s about restoring balance,” she said.

“If the impact of the shade cloth is working, we’ll put more of these trackers into the nests closer to the eggs, along more beaches where the Olive Ridleys nest, or we will trial another method of cooling the sand.”

WCTTAA is a partnership of

six on-ground Indigenous land and sea owners and managers, which has been operating for more than 10 years with support from Cape York NRM. Its annual turtle nest protection program covers Olive Ridley, Flatback (Natator depressus), some Hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata) and Green turtle (Chelonia mydas) nests.

Ergon stalwart takes on new role

BAMAGA-based electricity veteran Tommy Sebasio has been appointed as First Nations Engagement Advisor at Ergon Energy.

With three decades of experience under his belt as an electrical fitter mechanic at the Bamaga power station, he has supported, advised, educated and advocated for remote communities.

He has been involved in everything from getting the power back on after a cyclone to educating remote businesses about energy efficiency and mentoring locals looking for a career path into the electricity industry.

“I have a unique understanding of the mechanics of the network along with an intimate view of the history and culture of our remote communities, and customers’ needs and wants,” Mr Sebasio said.

In his new role, he will be supporting Ergon Energy’s activities across the Northern Peninsula Area (NPA) and the Torres Strait, ensuring engagement is approached with cultural sensitivity and respect for First Nations traditions and protocols.

“There’s a lot of change on the horizon for our isolated networks and I look forward to supporting our remote communities through the transition to renewable energy, which will reduce our reliance on costly diesel generation and be a

positive change for our environment,” he said.

He said this new role is an exciting opportunity to further support the community in energy usage via the PowerSavvy project, a campaign to help NPA and Torres Strait Islander residents reduce energy consumption in commercial

business premises, government buildings and residential homes.

“Cost of living is a challenge everywhere, but especially in our isolated communities, so I’m looking forward to getting involved in the PowerSavvy program and educating customers on how they can save energy and money.”

Mr Sebasio’s role is part of Energy Queensland’s Reconciliation Action Plan, aimed at building strong connections, learning from First Nations peoples and cultures, centring on the aspirations of First Nations communities and working together to safely deliver secure, affordable and sustainable energy

solutions.

“I think collaboration is the key to success and I look forward to continuing to work with everyone to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes, including customers, community groups, traditional landowners, councils, businesses and government agencies,” he said.

Basketball growing in popularity

ONE youngster’s love of basketball is spreading, with what began as training at home now a regular group of 30 at the Cooktown PCYC under the tutelage of Boomers team manager and Cooktown local Junior Viranatuleo.

Cooktown primary school student Eli Gibson-Chung caught the basketball bug from his dad Dave Chung, and leapt at the opportunity to compete at Peninsula school trials earlier this year.

The father and son duo trained at home for the trials, and their hard

work paid off, with Eli selected for the Mareeba team, but the youngster’s lack of game time and group training resulted in a solid loss.

“I knew it would happen, Eli just lacked the experience of game time,” Mr Chung said.

“That’s when I started pressing hard to see if we could start training kids and get something happening here.”

Mr Chung reached out to Basketball Queensland, who put him in touch with Mr Viranatuleo, who was overseas with the Boomers, and Endeavour Christian College teacher Leroy Corea.

“We were playing Sunday night games which was great, the kids and adults loved it,” he said.

“Then Dave (at the PCYC) told us about the After Dark program and we started bringing kids, just seeing how it went and nutting out drills, and now it’s getting bigger and bigger, which is great.”

Joining the coaching team at the PCYC is Junior’s wife Ashton, who has played basketball across Australia, Mr Corea and Mr Chung, with support from PCYC program manager Sergeant Dave Goode.

Sgt Goode said the PCYC’s Ac-

tivities After Dark program was focused at 12 to 18 year olds, with the success of Cooktown’s basketball program thanks to the enthusiasm of the volunteers.

“We have a good band of volunteers and their enthusiasm and keenness is what makes the program successful. At the start we had less than 10, now it’s grown to about 30 and we have split it into a beginner’s group and the more experienced kids,” he said.

Sgt Goode also provides a freshly cooked dinner for players after the last hour-long training and playing session.

Mr Chung hopes his and Eli’s love of the sport will continue to spread, with plans for games between Hope Vale and Wujal Wujal and a whole team to compete at next year’s Peninsula trials.

“It’s amazing to see the kids over the past month, how much their skills have improved,” Mr Chung said.

“The big plan is to grow it, maybe start a basketball club and we have talked about games between Hope Vale and Wujal Wujal and getting funding to get a basketball and volleyball court on the waterfront.”

A win for Corinne

COOKTOWN bowler Corinne Stallan has finished her year on the green with another win at the Mackay North versus South competition.

The 18-year-old was part of a four-person team who played three test matches as part of the competition, with her team taking top spot after the two-day event.

“I think I played really well in each game and our team was the best performing team, so I was really happy with my performance,” she said.

The teen is going to enjoy social bowls at her club, the Cooktown Bowls Club, for the rest of the year before planning her first away competitions in 2024.

Underwater hockey players shine at Sportstar awards

COOKTOWN’S sporting community shone on the big stage with two winners and five finalists in the annual NQ Sportstar Awards, announced in Mackay on the weekend.

The Cooktown Crocs Underwater Hockey Club junior team took out top honours, winning the Junior Sport Team award along with $1250 prizemoney, while the club’s senior team was runner up for the Sport Team award and $250 prizemoney.

Cooktown bowler Corinne Stallan, who was also a finalist, accepted the junior award at the gala event on the Underwater Hockey Club’s behalf, while Cook Shire Councillor Marilyn Morris accepted the senior team’s award on their behalf.

and track and field, swimming and rugby league athlete Maia Pensio were also finalists in the Junior Sportstar and Rural and Remote Sportstar categories alongside Corinne, while Laura Rodeo stalwart Debbie Gostelow and underwater hockey coach Richard Lee were finalists in the Volunteer of the Year category.

Cr Morris said the Cooktown Underwater Hockey Club’s video was played on the big screen as the awards were announced.

“Scottie, Richard and all the parents and kids are to be congratulated,” she said.

“The video they put together was a big hit, the kids sounded so natural and happy, all the while promoting their community – it made me slightly teary actually!”

Huge numbers for Gamefish Day

A RECORD number of 63 anglers took part in the 11th annual Clearwater Ladies Gamefish Day, raising a record donation of more than $12,000 for the McGrath Foundation, which places breast care nurses in Australian communities.

The competition began on Saturday when teams dressed up their vessels in a bid to be judged bestdressed boat in line with the Copacabana theme.

Tournament organiser Darryl French said it was one of the highlights of the event, with team Salty Susu taking the prize.

“A lot of imagination and time

and effort went into a lot of the creations, and it was a hard one to judge,” he said.

The weather on the fishing day was described as “kind”, allowing even the smallest of boats in the fleet to fish for the whole day.

“Over the course of the day, there were 22 billfish bites, with 13 of these being hooked and six caught and photographed [two black marlin and four sailfish],” he said.

Moto Moto Melon’s Stacey Sorbello caught the first fish of the day, a sailfish, and the first black marlin was caught by Pineapple Princess’s Theona Down.

mon fish caught for the day, with 18 weighed, the biggest 7.18kg.

Mr French said the presentation luncheon to award the winners of the 21 categories was another highlight this year.

“The Ladies Day committee did an amazing set-up of the venue to set the tone for a great afternoon of fun and stories,” he said.

“With 48 sponsors supporting the event this year, the prize pool was huge, with not only the category winners taking home some great prizes but also ladies and girls who didn’t feature in the winner’s circle. The Weipa Billfish Club would like to thank our amazing sponsors who made this event possible.”

Futsal team does town proud at FNQ Championships WITH only six weeks’ training under their belts, a group of Cooktown soccer players headed to Cairns on the weekend to battle it out against dozens of the region’s top teams in the FNQ Futsal Championships.

Seven young players from the Reefs Cooktown Football Club put their hands up for the championships, joining various Cairns teams in the two-day competition held at the Redlynch Central Sports Stadium.

Club administrator Jen Jenyns said the competition was a huge learning curve for the players.

“I was impressed with the boys’ commitment, regardless of the score board,” Ms Jenyns said.

“They gave 100 per cent of every minute of every game and watched other matches eagerly to learn what they could.”

The young players had a huge weekend, playing multiple games per day, with Benji Jenyns part of the winning Cairns Crocs FC team.

“We want to say a huge thank you to Karen and the Redlynch Central Sports Stadium for having us and we’re very much looking forward to heading back there next year,” Ms Jenyns said.

SPORT IN BRIEF Medal for Burton ALICE Burton produced some of her best golf on Saturday to be the Cooktown Golf Club monthly medal winner, beating the luckless John McArthur.

She had a nett 64 and 37 points, while McArthur had 65 and 36.

Nearest to pins went to Brent Hetaraka on 2/11 and 9/18, while McArthur was closest on 14.

This weekend’s golf is the final regular round of the year, a white tee stableford played on either Saturday or Sunday due to the Cooktown races.

Seven races on the card as club prepares for Cup THE 149th annual Cooktown Races will return for 2023 on Saturday, 11 November, at the Cooktown racecourse.

This year will see more races than previous editions, with a total of seven being held, including the prestigious Cooktown Cup. Cooktown Amateur Turf Club vice-president Peter Shields said there were usually only five or six races as Racing Queensland only financed five.

“If you want to run more, the club has to totally finance it, pay all the prize money and every-

thing,” he explained.

“This year we’ve been a little bit lucky with money and we’ve got the money there so we thought we’ll run seven races.”

Gates will open at 10 am and the first race will be at midday.

“We open at 10 am because of daylight saving so bookies can run the southern races as they’re an hour ahead of us,” Mr Shields said.

The day will feature Seaview’s Fashions on the Field and IGA’s Dash for Cash Footraces, followed by entertainment by Black Image until midnight.

Courtesy buses will be available between 10 am and 3 pm, 4 pm and 7 pm, and 9 pm and 12:30 am.

Mr Shields said ticket sales were going well, with shaded areas almost selling out.

“The marquees have just about sold out. We got an extra three marquees for shade because it was totally booked out,” he said.

Cooktown Amateur Turf Club has stated that general entry is available on the day, but the event is capped at 2000, so Cooktown residents wanting to

Fish simply superb ALAN ‘Fish’ Philliskirk was the overall Medal of Medals winner at the Carpentaria Golf Club on Sunday, carding a nett 68 in the Weipa Gourmet Meats-sponsored event.

The round also doubled as the first of the monthly medals for 2023-24 and Clinton Wonfor took C-grade with a nett 67, Rob McVean claimed B-grade with a nett 74 and Cameron Hart’s nett 72 was good enough to win A-grade.

Longest drives were won by Sharon Gardiner and Ross Craven.
