Around 3000 people flocked to the Laura rodeo grounds and racecourse across three days for a memorable weekend that was jam packed with events. From bucking bulls to fleetfooted thoroughbreds, there was no shortage of action for the crowd. The event, put on entirely by volunteers from across Far North Queensland, was hailed a major success.

Laura back with a bang CAPE York Peninsula’s biggest annual event, the Laura rodeo and races, roared back to life over the weekend. The tiny town of Laura, with a normal population of 200, swelled to around 3000 as thousands came

from far and wide to be a part of what was once an annual event. With no Laura weekend staged in 2020 or 2021 due to COVID, the pressure was on the volunteer organisers to deliver the goods for a spectacular return.

They did not disappoint. The event was a massive hit with punters and the horse sports lovers, along with rodeo diehards, who travel from event to event across North Queensland. Special feature – Pages 11 to 17

THREE school-based trainees in Weipa are getting a leg up into permanent employment through a partnership between Western Cape College and Sodexo. Recognising the obstacles to finding training and employment in Cape York, services provider Sodexo Australia teamed up with the school’s Vocational Education and Training department to offer school-based apprenticeships. The courses enable students to complete the practical components of study on Sodexo’s sites under the supervision of certified team members, all while gaining experience while completing secondary school. The program is supported by MEGT as the training provider in conjunction with the school and the support of the Clontarf Foundation. Through the school-based apprenticeship program, partici-

ONE of Cooktown’s popular giant Queensland gropers has died after becoming trapped in mud in the Endeavour River. A school of nine groper – which can grow up to 400kg and nearly three metres long – live around the Cooktown wharf area and are popular with both locals and visitors. Kate and Duncan Smith from Skydog Vets carried out an autopsy on the dead female fish, which was reported beached on the mud at low tide by several boaties. “There were no obvious injuries and you could see a large track in the mud where the groper had tried to escape so it’s likely it died due to stranding,” Ms Smith said. “Last week we had very low tides and we suspect she was trying to cross the mudflat and got trapped.” The local groper population

has been having hooks, line and other tackle removed from their mouths, gills and bodies on a regular basis, enticed with fish frames to come close enough for the vets to remove the tackle. “We considered the ethics of feeding the fish before deciding to do it,” Ms Smith said. “We feed only fresh fish that would make up their natural diet and limit the amount so that they aren’t dependent on being fed. “Without surveillance and removal of the tackle, particularly strong braid line, many of the tangles would have been fatal.” Ms Smith encouraged local anglers to help protect the wharf gropers by using chemically sharpened carbon hooks that rust quickly, rather than stainless steel. Follow the Cooktown Groper Feeding and Tackle Removal page on Facebook for more information on the gropers.

viduals, with a range of traineeships also available. Accreditations available via the traineeship program include a Certificate III in Business

Administration, Hospitality or Cleaning Operations, or a Certificate IV in Leadership Management. To date, 98 apprenticeships, and traineeships have been completed in the Weipa region, offering training opportunities dependant on position availability. “We have found that apprenticeships and traineeships are an important avenue for young people to get their foot in the door, especially in rural communities,” said Keith Weston, Sodexo’s executive director of energy and resources. “The breadth of services that we provide means there are opportunities for a whole range of certificates to be studied. “This means if a young person has a particular area of interest, they can take that passion and potentially turn it into a role and a long-term career with Sodexo.”

Rio Tinto’s rising star is acknowledged with gong By MATT NICHOLLS

A PROGRAM aimed at local Aboriginal people in Cape York has paved the way for Zharni Crossley to be named a Rising Star at the Queensland Resources Council Indigenous Awards. The Rio Tinto emergency services officer was a joint winner of the award on what was a big night for the company. “I saw the LAP program advertised and applied and got in,” Zharni said on Monday. “It’ll be two years in September and I love it.” Working Rio Tinto’s shift roster has its challenges for the 28-year-old mother, but she said a supportive family helped her juggle a career while caring for her son. Zharni is a Winchanam woman from one of the five Wik clans in the Aurukun area. She was born and raised in Weipa and has spent her whole life in Cape York. After leaving school she had several hospitality roles before moving into the emergency services sector as a Rio trainee. “It’s a busy job but I love the freedom of it. We are not stuck in the office,” Zharni said. She praised her leader Dennis

Zharni Crossley at the QRC Indigenous Awards last Thursday.

McLachlan for his support, as well as the rest of the emergency services team. “Everyone has been very supportive since I started,” she said. Although she did not know she would win ahead of the trip to Brisbane, Zharni was told to prepare a speech “just in case”. “I was hoping that I wouldn’t

win because I don’t really like public speaking,” she said. Rio Tinto Weipa GM Shona Markham praised Zharni and the others who were nominated. “Zharni has been recognised for always striving to be a positive role model for her community and motivating others to uncover their potential,” she said.

“Having recently completed her traineeship as an emergency services officer, she is now inspiring others to give traineeships a go.” Rio Tinto also picked up another award on the night. The company’s LAP work development programs won the Best Company Indigenous Employment and Training Initiative Award at the QRC event. Rio Tinto’s LAP apprentice and LAP paid school leavers programs were recognised for creating a culturally competent workplace that promotes increased access, participation and retention and advancement in the workplace. Two Rio Tinto employees were also recognised. Brendan Macfarlane was highly commended in the Indigenous Advocacy Award for his efforts in challenging the status quo when it comes to Indigenous development and setting others up for success. Ejsha Thorpe was also a finalist for the Indigenous Rising Star Award for being a role model to her peers, wearing many different hats while juggling a career, family and advocating for land management and Indigenous people’s connection to the land.

Tinto A mysterious surprise for Rio workers to new owners of old building get a raise THE new owners of Cooktown’s historic old bank on Charlotte Street were surprised to find a hidden message in a bottle while exploring the giant building. Darren and Tania Taylor bought the heritage-listed tourist attraction earlier this year and have started slowly refurbishing the building and grounds. “We found a time capsule in one of the downstairs fireplaces,” Mr Taylor said. “It was all sealed up with greaseproof paper and dipped in wax. “It was a bit surreal finding it! They had it in a Jim Beam bottle, neat as handwriting and signed by three local girls.” Mr Taylor tracked down the three girls, now women, two of whom are still living in Cooktown. Cherie Jerome (nee McCallum), Tess Buhmann (nee Palmer) and Suzanne Bucklar wrote the letter one lazy Saturday afternoon, Mrs Buhmann recalled. “I used to rent one of the downstairs flats at the Old Bank when I was working there as a teller for Westpac,” she remembered. “Cherie, Suzie and I had always been curious about what was behind the boarded-up wall and that weekend our curiosity got the better of us.” The trio pulled back the boards

to reveal a historical fireplace and decided it was the perfect place to leave a message for future curious visitors. The letter read: “it would be very much appreciated if you could try to contact us as we would like to know that there are other people as inquisitive as ourselves. Sorry, no pot of gold, just this empty bottle and the memories of our doing.” The building, affectionately known by locals as The Old Bank, has been a familiar sight on Cooktown’s main street since 1891, when it was built as the Queensland National Bank. The two-storey structure fea-

tures an impressive arched entrance, high ceilings, pillared verandahs and magnificent red cedar counters. It was Cooktown’s Westpac Bank until the early 2000s and has since been leased for a variety of

uses, including as a community hub, residential and natural resource management office. Mr and Mrs Taylor said they want to live in the building for now, but have also been considering other plans. They said the rumour currently circulating around that they were about to open a boutique hotel and gin distillery was not true. “We were thinking about a few things here but nothing is set in concrete yet and we aren’t planning to do anything for 12 to 18 months at least,” Mr Taylor said. “At the moment we’re happy living in it and doing up the yard.”

EMPLOYEES at Rio Tinto’s Weipa operations will get a significant pay rise as the mining company looks to maintain its core staff in the midst of a boom around the country. Weipa operations GM Shona Markham told staff last week that they would see the pay rise from July, although it would be backdated from March. Workers at the Amrun mine will also see a six per cent increase in their allowance for working away from home. Rio Tinto is also fast-tracking the transition to permanent roles for a number of WorkPac contractors. “We’ll be converting a number of WorkPac people straight away from our operational areas,” Ms Markham said. “We are also having a close look at the non-operational WorkPac contractors and we think by September we’ll have a really good view of what we can do to transition some of those workers. “We’ve genuinely heard that our people want secure conditions and that we want to find a way forward.” She also said advertised FIFO roles were for contractors on short-term projects on the mine.

Healthcare clinics given the tick PATIENTS visiting two Cape York primary healthcare centres can now be even more confident in the care they receive after the facilities received official accreditation. The Weipa Community Wellness Centre and the Hope Vale Primary Healthcare Centre have recently been awarded the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners accreditation for the first time. This means the facilities have met strict clinical criteria relating to their systems and practices which are in line with national and international health standards. The only other primary healthcare centres within the Torres and Cape Health and Hospital Service to already hold this accreditation are Bamaga and Thursday Island. Weipa CWC practice manager Daniela Ramirez said the award was the result of 12 months hard work by staff. “Hopefully this will give peace of mind to patients that we are following the same practices that happen across the globe,” she said. “Patients have been really happy that the service is here. “The team has received really great feedback, not only for getting the accreditation, but for creating that capacity to see patients in an alternative setting than the emergency department.” Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service executive director of medical services Dr Marlow

Coates said this was a major step forward in the delivery of health services in our communities. “It moves us closer to achieving self-sufficiency at our primary healthcare centres,” he said. Torres and Caper HHS executive general manager Ian Power said accreditation at each facility would be regularly reassessed. “I congratulate the staff at both these facilities for their efforts to attain this award which is a coup for their respective communities and patients,” he said. BREASTSCREEN VISIT MEANWHILE, a team from the BreastScreen Queensland Cairns

operation will provide free breast screens (mammograms) on their tour of various Cape locations during July and August. The tour will begin at Lakeland before heading to Pormpuraaw, Coen, Aurukun, Weipa, Mapoon, Napranum, and Lockhart River. BreastScreen Queensland health promotion officer Sandra Peut is encouraging local women to attend the free service while it is in their area. “A breast screen is the best way to detect breast cancer early, often before any changes can be seen or felt by a woman or her doctor,” Ms Peut said.

“However, if a woman does experience any breast symptoms, she should always consult her doctor as soon as possible.’’ One in seven women in Australia will develop breast cancer at some stage in their life. “Early detection can save your life, providing the best chance of effective treatment, increased survival, and improved quality of life,” Ms Peut said. Women aged over 40 are eligible for a free breast screen every two years. However, women aged 50-74 are strongly encouraged to have regular two-yearly breast screen-

grads Why our iconic bird should Navy celebrate be 2032 Olympics mascot milestone By MATT NICHOLLS

A CAMPAIGN has been launched to make an iconic Cape York bird the face of the Brisbane Olympics in 2032. The endangered palm cockatoo has been nominated by Birds Queensland as the mascot of the 2032 Games. Palm cockatoo expert Christina Zdenek said the spectacular blackcrested and scarlet-cheeked parrot was famous as the only bird in the world to drum with a drumstick. “The males trim a tree branch into a drumstick, then bang their drumstick on a branch or tree hollow to create an individualistic rhythmic beat in a social context,” Dr Zdenek said. “It’s truly remarkable behaviour, which will captivate the world.” Birds Queensland president Andrew Thelander said unlike the white ibis or the “bin chicken”, the palm cockatoo was a marketing dream – colourful, charismatic, and musical. “The palmy is the perfect mascot for Queensland, a bird we are all proud of,” Mr Thelander said. “Past mascots have been mammals, so now it’s time to give the birds a go!” Palm Cockatoos are found

Birds Queensland wants the Cape York palm cockatoo to be the mascot of the 2032 Olympic Games in Brisbane.

around Cape York Peninsula, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia’s Irian Jaya province. Birds Queensland has encouraged the Olympics organisers to reach out to PNG and Indonesia and involve them in the Olympic celebrations, using the mascot to cement friendly ties with our northern neighbours. Mr Thelander also hoped that Olympic recognition for “palmies”

may galvanise funding and spur conservation action to help the endangered species. Palm cockatoo pairs lay just one egg every two years, with only one chick successfully fledging the nest once every 10 years on average, making them one of the slowest breeding parrots in the world. Palmies are Australia’s largest cockatoo, reaching up to 1.2kg. “For that reason, they need very

large tree hollows to nest in – so large it’s often the entire hollowed out tree trunk that is the nest hollow – that is, vertically piped tree trunks open to the sky,” Dr Zdenek said. “These ancient nesting trees are irreplaceable.” To support the campaign to make the palm cockatoo the mascot of the 2032 Olympics, go to www.facebook.com/PalmyMascot

FIVE months of hard work and determination has paid off for 17 graduates of the Navy Indigenous Development Program. In last week’s public celebration in Cairns, the graduates stood proud as friends, family and the community watched the graduation ceremony. Recruit Zidanie Mudu, 19, moved from Saibai Island to Cape York four years ago and said she heard about NIDP from a friend and decided it was the life she wanted, too. “I want to be an inspiration like my friend Kalishwa; I am happy to be making my mother and my community proud of what I am doing,” she said. “Everyone at home is interested in my journey and what I am doing, it wasn’t easy adapting to the 5am starts, so much ironing and physical training but it’s been good to get out of my comfort zone. “I am ready now and want to continue into Navy as a ‘storbie,’ I got to visit recruit school during the program so I saw what it was like, and I can’t wait.” NIDP currently runs two courses per year. Budget delivers big for the Cape By MATT NICHOLLS

MEMBER for Cook Cynthia Lui says she is thrilled that Cape York received its fair share in the 2022-23 state budget, delivered last week by Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk. She said the budget was built on the state’s recovery from COVID-19 and was all about “good jobs, better services and a great lifestyle for all Queenslanders”. “In this year’s budget we are making record investments in health, education, jobs, renewables, and community services like police, fire and emergency services,” Ms Lui said. “This budget is delivering for all Queenslanders, so that no matter where we live, we will have access to the best health services and economic opportunities in all communities from Mareeba through to the Torres Strait. “In the Cook electorate, we are investing over $11 million for school infrastructure projects where we will see more classrooms for Weipa’s Western Cape College and the continuation of upgrades to Aurukun State School’s administration building. “Over $6 million in Indigenous Land and Sea Ranger Program funding to protect environmental and cultural heritage values has been allocated to Mapoon, Aurukun, Pormpuraaw, Laura, Wujal Wujal, Shelburne Bay, Archer Point, Melsonby, Olkola, Port Stewart and Normanby. “I was really pleased the government is supporting the Traditional Owners of Pajinka (at the tip of Cape York) by injecting $2 million into the community. “This funding will enhance the current site for visitation including a self-sufficient campsite with a car park and a boardwalk.” “The Peninsula Developmental Road continues to be a priority with over $44 million allocated to progress paving and sealing works. “I am proud of my budget achievements for Cape York communities because it supports regional growth and development. “Most importantly, it is about the government’s strong support for the regions.”

Cynthia Lui says more than $44 million has been allocated in the state budget for the Peninsula Developmental Road, including the Archer River bridge.

SPORT IN BRIEF Gee beats big field A MASSIVE field of 22 golfers took to the Weipa course last Wednesday for the weekly Wackers social comp, with three tourists helping boost the numbers. Former Weipa resident Gavin Wust also came back for a bash. Giembra ‘Gee’ Busmer was the player of the day, beating the unlucky Mick Foy for the nett prize. Mick had an impressive 44 off the stick but couldn’t get the nod. Peter Harding picked up the Hoffman’s for rounding up the field. Nearest the pins went to Mick Cerneka and Rob Richardson.

Presidential performance DAWNIES legend and Carpentaria Golf Club president Grant Crossley was the best of a bad bunch on Sunday morning for the weekly Dawn Busters event. Not one of the eight golfers managed to hit the fairway on the first hole, meaning no one picked up the longest drive prize. Byron Godree was runner-up, while Matt Byrne picked up the nearest to pin. Lucas Duvenhague was the Hoffman’s recipient.

Wily Wal in the wind LOCAL knowledge is always helpful at Cooktown but years of experience came to the fore on Saturday for Wal Welsh. Golfers were treated to gentle 30-knot gales as they attempted to contest the first round of the dry season Race to the Bay with a stableford event off the white tees. Welsh somehow put together a good score of 35 points, which was enough to beat Steve Butler (34) and Rick Butler (33). He also claimed the nearest to pin on 2/11. Eddie Cridland was the only player to land on 14, while Rick Butler stole 9/18. This Saturday will be the July monthly medal from the red tees.

History on QLD’s side DESPITE losing Sunday night’s State of Origin match 44-12, there is good news for Billy Slater’s Queensland team. The Maroons are the decider kings, having won 14 of 21 (two draws), and eight of the past nine, with NSW’s only triumph in that time coming in 2019. After winning Origin I, Queensland has gone on to win 16 of 20 series.

Orange wave at Laura as Hedley horses dominate By MATT NICHOLLS

FAVOURITE backers had a field day at Laura on Saturday as five short-priced horses saluted on the six-race card in Cape York. The cream rises to the top and it was no surprise that Cairns pub baron Tom Hedley was rewarded for allowing his trainers to send horses up the Mulligan Highway for the non-TAB event. Wearing the distinctive orange silks with the giant ‘H’ on the front, four of Hedley’s horses prevailed on the bush circuit. Three were for leading Cairns trainer Stephen Massingham, which included the Pioneer Cup and Laura Cup. Massingham’s charges were ridden by his two regular track riders in Nor Yadi and Masayuki Abe, who each had two winners on the day. “It was great to reward them with some good rides and win a couple of cups,” the trainer said. “We have a deal with them that when we go to the TAB races we put the southern boys on (who fly up) but when we go to the non-TABs they get first crack, which is fair.” Yadi rode Battle Cry perfectly in the Laura Cup (1450m). After jumping slowly in the straight for the first time, he was able to kick up and make his rivals work for an on-pace position and landed behind the leader Forgiato. With 500m to go, Yadi made his move and came off heels to level up into the straight. He found some resistance from the leader, who kicked strongly, but class prevailed as Battle Cry ($1.50) won by a half-length. “The set weight conditions just suited that horse down to the

ground. He’s been competitive in strong open company at TAB races and this was a big drop in class. However, you’ve still got to win and he was professional,” Massingham said. The Pioneer Cup Class 6 Handicap was won by Rigel ($1.50), who also took a sit but showed his class in running down the field to win by threequarters of a length from the fast-finishing Cool Attitude for Mareeba trainer Jenny Ball. Massingham’s other winner came in the Laura 10,000 Class 3 Plate when Endorse ($2) gave his rivals a licking to win by more than three lengths. “They were the right sort of races for these horses,” he said. “I’m surprised a few more trainers didn’t come to Laura because the track raced really well, which is a credit to the club who clearly put a lot of work into it. “It’s four hours from Cairns on a bitumen road, it was a beautiful drive up.”

Hedley’s fourth winner came via Captivated ($1.80) for trainer Fred Wieland in the Class B Handicap (1200m) with Frank Edwards on board. “A lot of people will bag Tom for winning these non-TAB races but he will go and buy another five horses this week,” Massingham said. “He doesn’t take money from the industry and put it in his pocket; he just re-invests. “I can say for a fact that he puts in much more than he gets back.” It was largely an uneventful day on the course, with one race delayed marginally by a couple of wandering wallabies on the track, although it did start off with a protest. In the opening race, punters were treated to a two-horse war in the home straight as jockeys Ngarie Nelson and Edwards tried to lift their mounts across the finish line in the Maiden Plate (1000m).

Top Cedee ($2.80) for Nelson held on to win by a nose for trainer Darryl Paradise, but correct weight was delayed after Edwards lodged a protest for interference against his runner Endinaye ($2). Stewards examined the video footage and took statements from both jockeys but could not find enough evidence to overturn the result. The biggest smile of the day was reserved for Innisfail trainer Renee Schluenz. Her pocket rocket Be Famous ($1.90) was too slick in the 0-50 Handicap (1000m) with Yadi in the saddle. “Once she got to the lead she was going to be hard to beat,” the small-time trainer said. “I love coming up here and my horses seem to love it, too.” Schluenz was just as rapt with her result in the Laura Cup as Forgiato boxed on to be second. “What a great run that was,” she exclaimed after the race.
