Another classic Weipa weekend WEIPA has once again put on a show to enhance its reputation as the events capital of Cape York. The Weipa Fishing Classic had all the Fs – family, fun, fireworks and, of course, fishing. The pyrotechnics on Friday night were a huge hit, but they were topped with an even greater performance to close Sunday night. Chris Hamill won the major prize draw, a $60,000 boat, but he was one of four who walked away with a new boat on Sunday. DANCERS from across Cape York and the Torres Strait will perform at this month’s NPA Cultural Festival. The Northern Peninsula Area Regional Council has been working around the clock to prepare for the June 24-25 event. Themed Keep the Flame of Culture Burning, the festival is a regional showcase of the two unique Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures of the Northern Peninsula Area. The NPA is situated at the northern most tip of Cape York and is home to three Aboriginal communities (Injinoo, Umagico
and New Mapoon) and two Torres Strait Islander communities of Bamaga and Seisia. The festival aims to create unity through a variety of events that display music, dance, art, food and culture. “This is an important and interactive cultural showcase featuring workshops, concerts, traditional dance, underground oven cooking, painting and weaving,” said festival coordinator Dev Lengjel. “Our plan is to develop economically post-COVID with a celebration of our cultures and a coming together of community
and visitors to enjoy all we have to offer.” The festival will present a variety of traditional dance performances featuring local troupes of Naygayiw Gigi, Bamaga, Guba Markai, Umagico, Dance Right, New Mapoon, Injinoo Storm, Injinoo and Wabuan Gedth Dance troupe, Umagico. Joining them from across the Cape will be dancers from Laura, Lockhart River and Aurukun. “Together with musicians Nightshift from Cairns and Tessa Devine, the festival will be an entertainment delight for young and old.” Mr Lengjel said.
“The local community will have food stalls and there will be weaving workshops and other cultural activities for visitors to experience and locals to enjoy.” The event starts on a Friday and finishes with a fireworks display on the Saturday night. Jute Theatre from Cairns will also bring its Dare to Dream workshop and performance about road safety to town. There is an exhibition of the Kentone Collection of photographs from the 1860s and the festival will showcase art from the schools and local artists. Visitors are welcome.

EIGHTEEN beacons in the Weipa shipping channel have been replaced by a local company as part of a $5 million contract. However, some of the former piles remain in the water as a result of dodgy workmanship by the company that installed them in the first place. Cape York Weekly understands some have been concreted in the water and will need divers to cut the piles so they can be removed. Carpentaria Contracting owner
Vance Wallin said the removal of those piles would be determined by the state government. His company has replaced the beacons in Weipa and will soon return to Cairns to replace another 12 on the east coast. “It’s been a great contract for us and it’s really good to have a Cape York business get work like this in our own backyard.” The contract was worth $5.3 million, according to the state’s February announcement.

Tourists tipped to flock to Cooktown for festival COOKTOWN’S biggest annual event returns this weekend, with thousands expected to attend the Cooktown Discovery Festival. A highlight of the social calendar since the 1950s, the festival includes favourite events such as the street parade, a re-enactment of James Cook’s landing at the Endeavour River and the return of the 1RAR Rising Suns Army big band. New to the program this year are a four-wheel-drive muster, paranormal tours of the historical convent-turned-museum, as well as ballet and BMX stunt workshops. Starting Friday, daily events will include markets, kids’ activities, Hyper the clown, guided tours and the CWA cafe. There is no entry fee for the festival, however some events require bookings or paid tickets, which can be made on the Discovery Festival website. Highlights of Friday’s program are the Reconciliation Re-enactment, Banks Banquet, musket firing, Roaming Wild animal encounters, Botanic Gardens night tour and Cooktown Museum paranormal tour. The Australian Army’s popular 1RAR Rising Suns big band will return to Cooktown this year.
Queensland Ballet workshop, Roaming Wild again, the Army band, gold delivery re-enactment, street parade, 4x4 muster and spaghetti eating competition, finished with a sunset soiree and fireworks on the waterfront. On Sunday, the program kicks off bright and early with Bugzy Bumblebee and laughter yoga, a combined church service, a stunt bike workshop, the famous reenactment, Hats and High Tea and finishes with another Botanic Gardens night tour.
Roaming Wild owner Talia Place said she was excited to bring her interactive wildlife display to Cooktown for the first time. “I’ve been to Cooktown before, but it will be my first time at the festival and we’ve heard all about it,” she said. “We have a show on Friday afternoon and another on Saturday morning, and will have a lot of different animals out on display as well as others people can hold, touch and get photos with.”
The educational display will feature numerous animals including snakes, lizards, squirrel gliders, a macaw, tarantulas, scorpions and even a giant burrowing cockroach, who enjoys getting held by his audience. Man accused of importing fake badges A COOKTOWN man has been charged with impersonating a Commonwealth public official and importing fake Australian Federal Police badges as part of an ongoing Queensland Joint Counter Terrorism Team (JCTT) investigation. Police arrested and charged the 66-year-old Cooktown man last Tuesday on behalf of the Queensland JCTT. He faced court in Cooktown and was granted bail. He is next scheduled to appear on July 13. Police will allege the man was a member of a group that came to police attention as a result of a video circulating through social media channels claiming to be a recording of the AFP Commissioner detailing plans to overthrow the federal government. The man speaking in this video is not AFP Commissioner Reece Kershaw. As part of this investigation a Perth man was charged in August and a Peterborough woman was charged in September. It will be alleged the Cooktown man took delivery of a consignment of 500 counterfeit AFP
badges from China. A total of 470 badges, believed to be the vast majority of the consignment, have been recovered by police. Queensland JCTT investigators have not found any impending threat to community safety, and have yet to find any evidence the group had the ability to carry out the plans they had discussed. AFP assistant commissioner for counter terrorism Scott Lee said the AFP was continuing to investigate this matter and last week’s arrest reflected the seriousness of the offences. “While there is no evidence the group had the ability to carry out any specific violent acts, the AFP and its partners take all threats of this nature seriously, and we have not hesitated to bring people before the courts to answer for their alleged criminal acts,” he said. “The AFP will continue to work with our partners to keep the Australian community safe.” Anyone with information about extremist activity or possible threats to the community should come forward. Weipa police blitz yields results A TARGETED blitz on road and marine safety in Weipa proved fruitful for police over the Weipa Fishing Classic weekend as visiting officers cracked down on local motorists doing the wrong thing. Road police came from Brisbane, Cairns and Mareeba and were joined in Weipa by the Department of Transport and Main Roads, along with Maritime Safety Queensland and the Thursday Island Water Police. Weipa officer in charge, Senior Sergeant Warren Flegg said he appreciated the help on one of the busiest weekends of the year. “Not including the marine operations, because we haven’t got those numbers yet, but as a collec-
tive we conducted more than 450 random breath tests during the campaign,” he said. “We had eight alleged drink drivers and one alleged drug driver. “Police handed out a total of 87 infringement notices over the weekend and I believe TMR also handed out some infringements. “What was most alarming is that we had 12 motorists detected for speeding in the 40km/h school zone on Friday. We really need to be slowing down in school zones.” Senior Sergeant Flegg said he would endeavour to get more visits from his southern counterparts throughout the year for additional traffic support.

Coen art shines in the big smoke COEN artist Naomi Hobson has given four local youths an unforgettable experience by taking them to the launch of her Adolescent Wonderland exhibition in Sydney. It’s the third installation of the much-hyped exhibition, which first launched in 2019 and features photographs of Coen youths around the community. “I see pride in my people all the time when I’m out on the street talking to them, and I wanted the rest of the country to see what I was seeing,” Hobson said. “We had a full house on Satur-
day, which was really good to see. All the feedback was positive and we had a lot of interest.” The exhibition was opened by Minister for Arts Tony Burke at the Cement Fondu gallery in Paddington. Adolescent Wonderland is about the young people of Coen and their journey. “Our young people are so giving and they’ve all got an education and many are furthering their studies after high school,” Hobson said proudly. She invited four locals to come
with her – Colin Kepple, Alaina Walker, Verona Platt and Chastyn Creek, who managed to adjust well to the colder climate. “I thought they’d complain and mumble about the weather but they took it really well and enjoyed the experiences,” Hobson said. “They didn’t shy away at the opening and loved sharing their stories. They are confident people.” Kepple even sang Bright Lights to help open the exhibition. The earlier installments are currently touring South Australia. “They are inspiring a nation.”

APUNIPIMA Cape York Health Council is hosting its annual Cape York men’s health summit in Hope Vale this week. More than 120 men from all over Cape York will descend on Elim Beach for a week of camping with a focus on men’s health. There will be a range of activities and discussions throughout the week, focusing on men’s business with a host of guest speakers. Headlining the week will be comedian Sean Choolburra. The very popular former cultural dancer will address the summit with his unique blend of history, cultural knowledge and spiritual wisdom, delivered with loads of energy and plenty of cheek. Also speaking throughout the summit will be BBM Cairns’ National TalkBlack radio host Trevor Tim, former Gold Coast Titans player Davin Crompton, and more. Reconciliation Week in Aurukun AURUKUN’S youth leadership team has hosted a special sports event to celebration Reconciliation Week in the community. With support from the PCYC, local agency workers came down to the centre to play games and share a meal with local youth. “More than 100 people, made up of youths, families, Elders, and agency workers, played games,” said PCYC Aurukun manager Steve Armstrong-Ravula.
“A highlight was the younger kids relay running race, which was topped off with the donut eating race. “Orange Sky was on site for families to wash and dry their laundry.” Agencies that attended included Aurukun Shire Council, Reset, Youth Justice, Qld Department of Housing, Aurukun Justice Group and National Indigenous Australians Agency.

Special vax teams take aim at Cape SPECIAL vaccination teams are being formed to target communities with lower vaccination rates in Cape York. “Our communities generally have responded well to our COVID-19 vaccination program since it started in March last year, but rates in Cape York have remained persistently a little lower than in the Torres Strait,” said Torres and Cape executive director of medical services Dr Marlow Coates. Currently, 89 per cent of Torres Strait residents aged 12 years and older have had two doses of COVID-19 vaccine and 96 per cent have had at least one dose. In Cape York, the two-dose rate is 82 per cent, with 90 per cent with at least one dose. “We are also seeing a slower take-up of COVID-19 booster and child vaccinations,” Dr Coates said last week. “COVID-19 vaccinations continue to be available at all Cape York health facilities, just as they are in the Torres Strait. “But to supplement this, we are establishing several special
catch-up vaccination teams that will be targeting communities across Cape York from mid-July until the end of September. “Communities will be advised in advance when the teams are coming their way. “The teams will be encouraging residents in each community to complete their full COVID-19 vaccination schedule. “While in community, the teams also will take the opportunity to encourage residents to be fully up to date with other vaccinations – such as influenza and all the childhood immunisation schedule. “This is important as flu cases rise across the region. “We understand that over the past 18 months, many people may have developed vaccination fatigue because of the strong focus to have their first, second and booster doses of COVID-19 vaccine. “But it is vital that people keep themselves and their children up to date with all their seasonal and childhood vaccinations.”

Pebbles eyeing new members
PARENTS in Weipa and Napranum are being encouraged to join up to Pebbles Playgroup before the end of the month to enjoy free membership. “It’s normally a $40 annual fee but there is a promotion on at the moment and it’s free until June 30,” said Pebbles president Nicole Henry. “We’ve got a great group of kids and parents but we always welcome more to come along so kids can play and socialise in a safe and supervised environment.” The Pebbles parents and volunteer group was in full swing over the weekend for their biggest fundraiser of the year – selling cinnamon donuts at the Weipa Fishing Classic.
“It’s our biggest event of the year and the money we raise goes towards our annual costs, which are around $18,000 per year,” Ms Henry said. Pebbles Playgroup is part of the Play Matters family, which was previously known as Playgroup Qld. “We also work closely with the C&K Kindergarten with Miss Amanda and Miss Jane our dedicated educators.” Pebbles is open from 9am to 11am every Monday and Tuesday at Rocky Point (next to the library). “Come on down and introduce yourself and take advantage of this free membership offer because we have a great group,” Ms Henry said.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families are finding new ways to connect to culture and community, thanks to a free service helping to strengthen families and keep kids safe. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Family Wellbeing Services (FWS) provide culturally safe support with parenting and family issues for mums, dads and families. The Queensland Government provides funding toAboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communitycontrolled organisations to operate services covering the whole of the state, including the Cape York Peninsula and Torres Strait Islands. Thousands of First Nations families have used FWS since they first opened in 2016, receiving practical and useful advice and support for a wide range of issues.
Creating positive strategies
Getting assistance from their own mob to better understand challenges and prioritise how to create a safe environment for their children is having a positive impact for First Nations families. Larnie*, a single mother of two young boys has benefitted from this approach.
Larnie finds it difficult to remember everything, so her support worker helps her understand what needs to be done. The phone calls and texts keep Larnie on track to get dayto-day tasks done and she knows it’s okay to ask for help. Larnie’s supportive and nonjudgemental support worker helped get her life together. Learning to drive was a long-term personal goal that no one had helped with before, but her FWS worker helped her get her licence and Larnie can now drive her children around safely and is building new relationships with them.
Helping with generational trauma
Families dealing with intergenerational violence and abuse is one of the main reasons they reach out for help from FWS. Tw e n t y - f o u r - y e a r - o l d Sherry*, mum to four young children, said FWS had been a great help because they understood her history and trauma. Sherry grew up in an unstable household, witnessing frequent incidents of domestic violence and alcohol and drug addiction. Sherry was referred to

Family Wellbeing Services connects families with culture and community
FWS as part of her probation requirements, but she knew she needed help to keep her family together. FWS has helped Sherry with budgeting, mental health issues, self-restraint and anger issues and has shown her ways to heal positively with regular counselling and referrals to other services. Staff helped Sherry to get her children into local play groups and day care, as well as a homework club which they love. Sherry has created a safety plan to deal with her partner’s abusive behaviour, and she is working towards getting her driver licence.
She has started a traineeship and wants to get a good paying job. The FWS worker visits at least twice a month to check on Sherry and her family. “I can now reach out to people, feel supported and know that I am not on my own,” she said.
Better support for dads
Dad to two young children, Kelvin* spent years trying to break his drug addiction which ended with him spending time in jail. Kelvin heard about FWS through a local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
Community Health Service, making a self-referral for help. He thought all he needed was support to prove to the courts that he was stable enough to support his children after being released from prison, but quickly realised that FWS could help with so much more. A case plan was developed between Kelvin and his male case worker which included one-on-one guidance, referrals to support agencies, drug and alcohol rehabilitation, mental health and GP health services. After a year, Kelvin noticed a big change in his behaviour and attitude towards life. Kelvin said the best things about the Family Wellbeing Services are that he gets to yarn with someone outside the family, they take him seriously, listen to him and he feels like he’s in control of his plan. With their help and support he has become a more stable parent and has a better relationship with his kids who are doing well at school. CHRIS Hamill admitted his heart rate was slowly gathering pace as each contestant was “eliminated” from the major prize draw at the Weipa Fishing Classic. Twenty-eight people had their number called and gathered on the stage on Sunday night and one-by-one they walked away with prizes. By the time it got down to the last three, Chris knew he had won a new boat. “The timing is great,” said Chris, who attended his first Weipa Fishing Classic last year and said he purchased just one keyring for the major draw. “One last year and one this year.” There was nothing wrong with the consolation prizes, though. With support from major sponsor Cav’s Marine and Outdoor, there were boats for both the runner-up and third place. Callum Mayor was the sec-
ond last man standing, while Leeandra Wone was third. Britney Moss claimed the heli-fishing trip, while the diamond for fifth place went to Evan Sellick. Weipa Fishing Classic president Aaron Schleich praised his hard-working committee and the Weipa community for making it another great event. “I’m not surprised because Weipa always supports the events but it was another terrific turnout and went really well,” he said on Sunday night. The pressure on the committee to put on the June event after two years of short turnarounds must be acknowledged, he said. “It’s hard enough when you have a full 12 months, so when you only have nine it puts a lot of strain on the volunteer base,” Mr Schleich said. “I encourage locals to consider putting their hand up to stand on the committee for next year and give it a go because it’s a rewarding experience.”

A QUICK-THINKING daughter has saved the day for her dad after he won a fishing trip to New Zealand with Mark Berg but wasn’t on-site to claim the prize. Simone Slack raced up to the stage to tell the fishing guru that her dad was keen to go and that a re-draw wouldn’t be necessary. She even managed to get him on speaker phone, forcing Berg’s hand to take him on the trip. Mal Slack had just finished his Western Cape Eco Tours sunset trip and had yet to shower, but was quick to get down to Andoom Oval to pass on his appreciation. He will join two other Weipa residents in northern New Zealand later this year for an all-expenses
paid, eight-day fishing adventure with Berg. To enter, they had to hold one of the 2200 keyrings in the Weipa Fishing Classic and be a member of Mark Berg’s Fishing Addiction. The popular TV host allowed locals to sign up over the weekend. Brian McPharlin is from Yamba in NSW and is a contractor for Rio Tinto. He had been a member for six months and was stoked to get the call-up. “I haven’t been overseas before. I don’t even have a passport,” he said with a smile. Long-time Weipa resident Liz Weidman has her passport and can’t wait for the November trip. She admitted she signed up over the weekend and was a popular selection when her name was drawn.

JOHN Preece says he has been blown away by the support of the Weipa community after word spread of his health issues last week. The much-loved volunteer and MC at many local events was recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and word got out last week. “At this stage I’m waiting to hear from the doctors about what the next stage is with the treatment but we are all remaining positive,” he said. A GoFundMe page was set up to help the Goodline worker and his family, while the Weipa Fishing Classic also put on a Teddy Bear raffle to aid the fundraising. Half of the proceeds of the mud crab races also went to Preece and his family with around $8000 raised at the Classic. “I’m just blown away and very humbled,” he told Cape York Weekly on Sunday. “This is why I love Weipa. Whenever you were doing a fundraiser or organising an event you would go around to the businesses and you’d never get told ‘no’. “The community of Weipa just never stops giving.” Preece moved to Weipa eight years ago and considers the place home, even though he has strong ties to Innisfail. “I wish I could have been at the Fishing Classic to say thanks.”

Big crowd for rugby league feast HUNDREDS of people packed Cooktown’s John Street Oval on Saturday to cheer on their teams for the first Cooktown home games of the season. Cooktown District Junior Rugby League hosted the day, with junior and senior teams from Wujal Wujal, Hope Vale and Pormpuraaw travelling to the event. CDJRL president Teila Winton said the event was the first of several home games for Cooktown. “The under-7 league tag was a huge hit with 25 players all new to football and learning the game,” she said.
“We have games coming up in Wujal Wujal on July 23, Mossman on July 30, August 13 in Wujal Wujal and again in Cooktown on September 3 to finish the season.” The junior games were noncompetitive, Winton said, and aimed to give the players a chance to practice their skills against each other in a friendly environment. “We had a few junior teams who were just starting, and it was a good way to introduce them to games and focusing on skills development rather than the score.” As well as the under-7 league tag, there was under-13 to 17
mixed league tag, under-9, under-11 and under-12 rugby league games, as well as an under-13 boys game. The junior matches were followed by senior games between Hope Vale, Wujal Wujal and the Pormpuraaw Crocs. Pormpuraaw won 22-10 against Wujal Wujal, with fullback Jeremiah Gilbo a standout for the Crocs, scoring four tries. Pormpuraaw went on to play Hope Vale, with the Cockatoos winning 30-4 on the back of a strong performance from Kai McLean.

MARINE PILOT TRANSFER SERVICE – PORT OF WEIPA Ports North is responsible for the provision of marine pilotage services to Far North Queensland ports including Weipa. The corporation is seeking an appropriately qualified deckhand to provide a safe, timely and efficient vessel transfer service for the marine pilot operation in the Port of Weipa. The position is based in Weipa and will involve a shift work roster arrangement. The role will also be required to undertake general maintenance and repair work to ensure the transfer vessel and equipment is maintained in operational readiness taking account of maritime safety and workplace health and safety requirements. The successful applicant will work closely with the Ports North Marine Pilot Group to ensure pilot transfers are operated so as to meet all pilotage service requirements in the Port of Weipa. Applicants will require a cooperative flexible approach to work with good communication skills.

Kenny out to maintain his perfect muaythai record COOKTOWN teenager Samuel Kenny, best known in the gym as Kenny, is stepping through the ropes in Cairns this weekend for his second muaythai fight. The 14-year-old began training at Cooktown Full Boar Thai Boxing Club under coach Vince Parkes and assistant coach Oliver Hanson earlier this year and impressed the team with his first bout in May. “He’d only done 15 lessons and I said he wasn’t quite ready so we didn’t put his name down, but then they put a call out to fill
a late pull out and we thought why not?” Parkes said. “Kenny took the fight with three days’ notice and we really didn’t expect him to pull off a win, but he jumped in and just took the fight to the other kid and won convincingly.” With a full three weeks of twice-daily fight training in preparation for this bout, assistant coach Oliver Hanson said he was confident Kenny would perform well. “He’s fighting Steele Day from Nukzu, which is a tough

School holiday activities WEIPA Town Authority has partnered up with Tennis Australia to run a special tennis camp in the June school holidays. Swimming club out to make a splash EARLIER this month, the Cooktown Amateur Swimming Club held its annual FNQ swimming carnival. The day kicked off with the junior tadpoles carnival which saw nine learn-to-swim mem-
bers show their skills in novelty races. Members from eight different teams from across the Far North came together to battle it out in the main events. Twenty-eight swimmers from
the Cooktown club produced some great performances, which included personal best times. On the Sunday after the carnival, around 40 swimmers from the region attended a joint club coaching clinic hosted by Herbie
Howard from Centrals Cairns. “Thank you must go to our amazing sponsors who helped make the day happen,” club president Melissa Gunton said. “We are looking forward to the FNQ Championships in July.”
