FIREWORKS TO SPARK MONTH OF EVENTS
Back with a bang By MATT NICHOLLS
THE Cape York events season will return to its pre-COVID days in 2022, kicking off this weekend with the Weipa Fishing Classic, which is back in its traditional slot. Amazingly, the virus couldn’t
stop the Classic from rolling, with a dedicated committee pushing the 2020 version to November, before backing up last year with a threeday event in September. “It’s exciting to be back in June and to kick off the events season,” president Aaron Schleich said.
“We’ve got something special this year with a fireworks display for the town to enjoy.” The fireworks will kick things off on Friday and another rendition will be held to close out the event on Sunday. There is a local public holiday in Weipa on Monday.

THE new CEO of Cook Shire will stand out in a crowd and says ratepayers should feel comfortable approaching him about council matters if they feel the urge to do so. The seven-foot Brian Joiner will leave his position as the CEO of the Shire of Menzies in Western Australia and make the move to Cooktown in August. He says he can’t wait to fill the shoes of the outgoing CEO Linda Cardew, who is retiring next month. “I’m absolutely thrilled about coming over,” he said. “My partner (Eve) and I loved the town – it was a beautiful location. For a town with about 2500 people, Cooktown has great facilities.”
Incoming CEO Brian Joiner.
Mr Joiner said he would have an open-door policy. “My style of leadership is to be open and transparent and to listen,” he said. “I will stand out so people shouldn’t be afraid to say hello in the supermarket or come and
see me in my office and discuss any issues they might have.” Mr Joiner said there were some major differences between Cook Shire and the Shire of Menzies, but also found some similarities. Amazingly, Menzies is bigger than Cook, although the population difference is huge. There are almost 5000 people living in Cook Shire, while just 500 people live across Menzies. “The biggest difference is that Menzies had a large rate base due to mining, while Cook Shire doesn’t have a massive amount of ratepayers,” Mr Joiner said. “But Menzies is only an hour and 15 minutes from Kalgoorlie, a city of 30,000 people.” Mr Joiner said he grew up wanting to be a pilot but when he realised that he was too tall
for a cockpit he turned to air traffic control. Cook Shire mayor Peter Scott said the new CEO had the right kind of experience to take on the position. “With extensive executive leadership experience in local and federal government, as well as private enterprise, Brian’s appointment represents our ambition to maintain the strong, innovative leadership Linda has provided,” he said. “Brian also has demonstrated experience driving and delivering dynamic and synergistic investment and economic development opportunities to regional areas, and communities. “This aligns with council’s focus on strengthening, growing and future-proofing our shire, and the Cape York community.”

Telstra refuses to speak about tower application By MATT NICHOLLS
TELSTRA has refused to speak to Cape York Weekly about its maligned phone tower proposal in the main street of Cooktown. The company’s regional general manager Rachel Cliffe complained that we did not contact Telstra for comment before last week’s edition, but then didn’t respond to our request to speak on the phone. Telstra has a long and unimpressive record of requesting that questions be emailed to them, only to respond without actually answering them. In a letter to the editor –
which we won’t publish in full as Ms Cliffe didn’t respond to a request to speak to us – she said Telstra had complied with the Planning Act 2016. However, Cape York Weekly can reveal that Telstra sneakily advertised the phone tower in the Mareeba-based The Express newspaper, rather than our publication or the New Cooktown Independent newsletter. There are still question marks over whether the development application signage was erected on the property in a timely manner, although Telstra insists it met the requirements. “We take our responsibili-
ties to consult the community seriously and have followed the correct procedure, including site signage, letters to neighbours and newspaper advertising, all within the required timeframes,” Ms Cliffe wrote. She did not address why the telco was insistent on the main street site, rather than a site just a few blocks away. “Mobile services in Cooktown are severely affected during the tourist season, so we are planning to replace an existing small cell with a new mobile base station on the corner of Walker and Charlotte streets, which will deliver improved

coverage, capacity and speed for the town, including 5G for the first time,” Ms Cliffe wrote. Because she refused to speak to Cape York Weekly, Ms Cliffe couldn’t answer why the Telstra services in Cooktown were poor year-round, including outside of the tourist season. “We welcome community feedback and will review any matters that were raised by the community as part of this process,” she wrote. The development application will now be decided by Cook Shire Council, which should tell Telstra to consult with the community before re-applying.

Lauren Bowyer loves her ute and has organised this year’s ute muster, to be held in conjunction with the Cooktown Discovery Festival.
Utes will be popular addition to festival A UTE muster will make its debut at the upcoming Cooktown Discovery Festival and organiser Lauren Bowyer is hoping it becomes an annual event. “It was my mum’s idea,” she said. “I think we were talking about the festival and how it used to be a great weekend for locals. “There was a thought that it had become aimed at tourists. “Lately, every year we start talking about going away for
the weekend rather than sticking around for the festivities.” Irene Bowyer (nee Doughboy) told Lauren that she should do something about it. “She said someone should do a ute muster,” Lauren said. “I have a ute and my partner has been working on a ute, so I went to talk to the council about getting a ute muster as part of the festival. “They were really supportive of the idea but just didn’t have
enough resources to organise it, so we put it together.” Lauren said the support from the community, especially local businesses, had been amazing. “I started contacting people I know to drum up interest and it was unbelievable,” she said. “Kenny and Stef from Auswaste contacted us and were really generous with their support. “We’ve had a lot of other businesses sponsor it as well.” The ute muster will form part
of the Cooktown Discovery Festival parade, with prizes up for grabs in a number of categories. “I’m not sure how many utes we’ll get this year but I know that if we do it next year we’ll get a lot more,” Lauren said. “A guy in Bundaberg reckons he can get 100 utes up here. “I think I might have created a monster!” Registrations are still being taken. COMMENT: Cape needs loop road By MATT NICHOLLS
OFF-ROAD adventuring has been the backbone of the Cape York tourism industry for decades, yet has somehow survived with the bare minimum amount of support. It has been people power that has kept the 4WD market ticking over – often individuals who have cleared tracks or built makeshift bridges through remote parts of the Peninsula. However, there is a real fear among locals that we could lose the adventure tourism market. When the road from Lakeland to Weipa is fully sealed – and it should be by 2030 – tourists might as well be on the Bruce Highway. Which is why Cape York needs serious investment in our off-road tracks. Sealing the PDR is not up for debate – it’s a must and will actually increase the number of tourists visiting the Cape – but we need to keep them here to avoid them racing up to the Tip for a quick photo before returning south. The tourism market is a competitive beast and Cape York will be left behind if we don’t act. It has been pleasing to see Cook Shire Council and the Torres and Cape Indigenous Councils Alliance throw their support behind keeping the Bertiehaugh Road open, but you can bet it won’t be the last time we hear opposition from the Irwin family.
The new Bertiehaugh Road track is a modest four-wheel drive route that could provide a tourism boost for the region.
It’s time for Australia Zoo and local stakeholders – Cook Shire, the Mapoon, Napranum and NPA councils, Weipa Town Authority and the Western Cape Chamber of Commerce – to come up with a long-term strategy for this important loop road. It can be a game-changer for tourism in this region. Since the track was pushed through last year by a group of locals, it’s likely that fewer than 100 people have traversed across Stones Crossing and made it 63km to the other end of the track. But it won’t take long until the word spreads further and more people are taking the opportunity to experience a new challenge. The concerns of the Irwins are legitimate – people have ventured off the track, spread weeds and
most likely damaged the environment and habitat of some precious native species. However, their refusal to sit down with stakeholders and work on fixing some of the problems is perhaps the bigger issue. Remember, it was the Irwins who agreed to the road in the first place. After being gifted the property by the federal government, they put a lock on the gate of the existing road. As a trade-off they agreed to a new gazetted road with a line drawn on a map. But most of the track only existed on paper. It wasn’t until last year that it became a reality. Now it’s become a problem for Australia Zoo, which has pulled out all stops to try and get it closed and de-gazetted.
Thankfully, Cook Shire has said no. It’s only a matter of time until they lobby ministers and the southern media to drum up support. When Cape York Weekly’s article appeared on Ron & Viv Moon’s Remote Australia page last week, it attracted more than 1700 likes and 600-plus comments, most of them in support of the loop road. The Moon family are icons in Australian off-road tourism and understand the value of good tracks, especially new ones. Cape York desperately needs alternatives to the Old Telegraph Track, Frenchman’s Track and the handful of other roads that attract thousands of motorists annually. Weipa especially needs it. It’s estimated that of all the tourists that venture to the Tip each year, only a quarter go to Weipa.
With the opening of the new Bertiehaugh Road – which is only accessible for half of the year – that number might increase. Imagine leaving Lakeland for Weipa, crossing the Wenlock River through Stones Crossing and hitting the Bamaga Road just south of Bramwell Station. You’re suddenly at the doorstop of the Old Tele Track and have only driven 160 clicks from Weipa. Motorists must do the right thing on this track. They mustn’t venture off course and they can’t be camping there or starting fires. It is, after all, private property. But there is also a great opportunity for the Irwins to promote the work done on the reserve and why it’s important to respect the land. They certainly lose credibility when they host private tourism groups and lease part of the property for cattle grazing. The Western Cape Chamber of Commerce has teamed up with Cook Shire Council to erect signs at the entrance of the track with important information. Perhaps the Irwins could reach out and get a helping hand with support for government funding to help protect their valuable asset. That, however, would require them to concede on their stance of the track being there. Matt Nicholls is the editor of Cape York Weekly and secretary of the Western Cape Chamber of Commerce

A cause for celebration as Weipa By MATT NICHOLLS
TICKETS sold out so quickly for the Weipa Fishing Classic this year that organisers have had to put out extra for the fishing categories. The event itself is free, but the $65 keyring gave you entry into the fishing categories as well as the major prize raffle. When the last of the allocated 2200 keyrings sold on Saturday morning, the volunteer committee had to find a way to keep the local anglers happy. “We’ve come up with $35 tickets for adults and $25 for juniors for just the fishing competition,” president Aaron Schleich said. “These tickets won’t get you into the major raffle draw but you will be eligible to win some of the great prizes we have for the fishing categories.” All the usual fishing categories are up for grabs this year, with one new one – mud crabs. “We will announce the details for that category on Friday night because we don’t want people to go out catching a heap of mud crabs,” Mr Schleich said. The president said this year’s prizes, with three boats up for grabs, were “pretty deadly”. “The random pool prize is going to be cool, too. “I think last year we gave away around 100 random prizes and we’ll be aiming for a similar number this year.
Weipa has become Mark Berg’s favourite fishing destination and he’ll bring that energy as host of this weekend’s event.
“There are actually four boats as we have another one up for grabs in a $10 raffle, so if you missed out on a ticket in the main draw you can still be in the running to go home with a new boat.” The Weipa Fishing Classic kicks off on Friday night, although the fishing component doesn’t start until midnight. The weigh-in station will open at 4pm on both Saturday and Sunday and will close at 5.30pm. “We think this year will have a real show feel about it as we start
to get back to normality after those COVID years,” Mr Schleich said. “We’ve got more than 30 stall holders, which includes the food outlets and there will be some great entertainment over the three nights. “With the expertise and sponsorship of KC’s Fireworks we are excited to bring you some festive flare on both the opening night and closing night. “This is the Weipa Fishing Classic’s gift to the community. “This is our gazetted show holi-
day so we really want it to have that ‘show’ feeling.” HOST EXCITED MARK Berg says it took him a long time to get to Weipa but it has proven to be worth the wait. “It’s now one of my favourite places in the world,” he said. “I know Cape York well and used to go to Seisia every year, but somehow managed to avoid Weipa.” The host of this year’s Weipa Fishing Classic and face of Mark Berg’s Fishing Addiction visited
the community last year to film an episode of his TV show and has already been back again. This will be his third trip to Weipa in 12 months. “I’m bloody excited,” he said. “The last trip I did with Ganesy (Far North Fishing’s Kurt Gane) we camped out on a river mouth and I think we got about 70-80 barra, just on topwater lures. “What I love most about Weipa is that it feels so pristine and untouched. “The community is so positive, too, and love their fishing.” Berg is no stranger to the microphone, having hosted major events over the last two decades. He says he’ll bring energy to the stage across the three nights and hopes to be able to impart some of his fishing knowledge at the weigh-in station. “I can’t wait to see what everyone brings back,” he said. “I know that there will be people there that don’t know a lot about fishing, or kids that are new to the sport, so we’ll help people identify the species and try and get the crowd involved.” SPECIAL TREAT BERG is famous for bringing amateurs on his fishing expeditions. As part of his package, three lucky people in the Weipa crowd will win a trip to New Zealand for the trip of a lifetime. “It’s another great chance to win at the fishing classic,” he said.

Outstanding benefits & recognion program
Fishing Classic kicks off season “Three people in the crowd will be surprised with a trip to New Zealand where they will go fishing for kingfish and snapper in a remote area on the North Island. “The odds are sensational as well because you have to be one of the 2200 ticket holders and you also need to be a subscriber to Mark Berg’s Fishing Addiction. “We’ll cross-reference those lists and draw out three people on the Sunday night.” Berg said people could sign up over the course of the weekend and be in the draw, with information to be shared on the opening two nights. “This part of NZ reminds me a bit of Weipa in that it’s remote and untouched,” he said. “The fishing is going to feel a bit different, though. “People are going to get their arms pulled off. When you hook a kingfish that is over 30kg you need to be hanging on.” Mr Schleich said the Weipa Fishing Classic was thankful for the support of Berg and the long list of sponsors that made the iconic Cape York event possible. “Make sure you keep an eye out for the list of sponsors over the weekend because they are the ones you should support as they support you and this event,” he said. “Special thanks to Cavs Marine & Outdoor who have gone above and beyond in supplying four boats for this year’s Classic.”

NEWS IN BRIEF Unseasonal rain in Cape TOURISTS at the Tip of Cape York, as well as locals in other parts of the Peninsula, received some unseasonal rain over the weekend. A heavy downpour hit the NPA, including Turtle Head Island, while Lockhart River, Weipa, Coen, Kowanyama and Cape Flattery aslo recorded rain. The rain was caused by a deep and moist equatorial airmass.
Flu cases soaring THERE are more than 400 recorded cases of the flu in Cape York and the Torres Strait, causing concern for health officials. As of Thursday, there were 27 active COVID-19 cases within the Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service region, but laboratory-confirmed influenza cases had reached 407. Since the influenza outbreak began a month ago, 47 Torres and Cape residents have required hospitalisation for varying periods at Thursday Island, Bamaga, Weipa, Cooktown and Cairns. The flu vaccine is free for all until the end of June and appointments can be made at your local GP, health clinic or pharmacist.
Free caravan weighing POLICE officers from Mareeba will be in the Cape this week ahead of the Weipa Fishing Classic and are expected to stop at the Archer River Roadhouse tomorrow (Wednesday) for a free caravan weighing station. Tourists will be encouraged to weigh their vans and check if they are compliant with their vehicle’s towing capacity. “This is about education and not enforcement,” the police poster reads.

Why a university hub will be brilliant for Cooktown By MATT NICHOLLS
DUNCAN Taylor can’t wait for the Cooktown university hub to open and for local people to realise its potential. The voluntary CEO of Country Universities Centre was in the Far North last month to get a feel for Cooktown and the surrounding communities and how the new hub will benefit local residents. “I really loved it. I think the people of Cooktown are going to rally behind it,” Mr Taylor said. “There is no vocational education presence in town. “People have to leave the community to take their studies further.” Mr Taylor said there were many challenges that regional Australians faced that were different to their city counterparts and having a university hub in Cooktown would help the local community. “A lot of people are unwilling to leave or are forced to leave because they don’t have the connectivity they get elsewhere,” he said. “This way we get to keep people who would otherwise
An example of what the Cooktown university hub might look like.
have moved away or who otherwise would have never joined up in the first place.” The university hub has been marked for the arcade next to the pharmacy and adjacent to the newsagency in Charlotte Street. “We deliberately wanted the centre to be in the main street,” Mr Taylor said. “Not only is it visible but people can see students come and go. The old saying goes: ‘you can’t be what you can’t see’ and I think that is relevant here.” Mr Taylor praised Cook Shire Council for its support of the hub. “Having the council on board has made the process a lot easier and credit must go to Cook Shire for being so supportive,” he said.
“I know the mayor and the councillors are keen to see the centre succeed and the staff have been exceptional.” Cook Shire councillors gave director Lawrence Booth a round of applause at their May monthly meeting for his work in getting the hub off the ground. “I believe Lawrence did a lot of the work in not a lot of time when it came to the grant application,” said deputy mayor Robyn Holmes, who chaired the meeting. “It’s going to be a great asset for Cooktown.” Mr Taylor said university centres had worked in regional towns in New South Wales, Victoria and southern Queensland. Cooktown will be the most northern centre in the network.
“This hub will be about wrapping support around those who are doing further studies and networking them with all the universities in the country,” he said. “Last year we had 900 different degrees go through our centres.” Locals who wander into the hub later this year – likely from October – will find a fitted-out facility with full-time staff who are trained to help people both with their studies and finding suitable courses. “It will have great connectivity and our people will be able to provide support and guidance,” Mr Taylor said. “The centre is also planning to have a specific Indigenous support worker, too. “This is not just for teenagers and school-leavers, it could be for people who want to shift their career or enhance their skills. “Around 20 to 25 per cent of the centre’s students are postgraduate.” Funding for the Cooktown university hub comes from the federal government’s Regional University Centres program.

Major milestone for Mapoon star A MAPOON worker has marked an incredible milestone after celebrating 25 years in the Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service. Sharon Booth is a Mapoon local who has been working at the local clinic since 1997. Weipa Hospital’s senior medical officer Riley Savage, who works alongside Ms Booth, said she had the trust of her community. She said as a senior health worker Ms Booth was responsible for helping ensure patients attended their appointments and monitored those in the community who required extra support. “She also has her finger on the pulse of what is going on in the community and is able to relay that to staff, such as if there is sorry business that the clinic staff need to be mindful of,” Dr Booth said. “She goes above and beyond to support the people of Mapoon.” TCHHS executive general manager Ian Power said Indigenous health workers were an integral part of delivering health care. “We congratulate Sharon on this milestone and thank her for her dedication to the people of Mapoon and the TCHHS,” he said. Mapoon mayor Aileen Addo also paid tribute to Ms Booth. “She has been very supportive to members of the community.”

Big funding boost for Indigenous tourism QUEENSLAND’S Indigenous tourism sector will get a $4 million boost in the next state budget to grow the number of First Nations tourism experiences in Queensland. Speaking at Mossman Gorge, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the package would build on the state’s current Indigenous tourism sector to deliver more unique experiences for tourists. “What we want to do in the lead up to the Olympics is to grow our First Nations tourism

experience across the state,” Ms Palaszczuk said.
“If someone has a small company or a good idea, we are
going to help build that capacity. They can grow and employ more people and be ready in 10 years when people come from all around the world, wanting to experience everything that Queensland has to offer. “The Ngadiku Dreamtime Walks conducted by the local Indigenous people at Mossman Gorge are nation-leading. “With more First Nations tourism offerings throughout our state, we know we can build on this industry into the future.”

Partnership pays off as Bamaga Motel opens up AS travellers return to Queensland, tourists, visitors and families can now book into the Northern Peninsula Area’s newest accommodation – the Bamaga Motel – to enjoy their “trip to the Tip” and support local jobs. The new Bamaga Motel – opened by Indigenous, community-owned and not-for-profit public corporation Bamaga Enterprise Ltd – was supported by a Torres Strait Regional Authority tourism business growth package. TSRA representatives, including acting chair Horace Baira and Member for Bamaga
and Tailisa Yusia attended the official opening last week. Mr Baira said the Bamaga Motel was a strong example of TSRA supporting local aspirations around business, tourism and hospitality ventures. “The project has engaged local businesses and workers since the start of works in late 2019,” he said. “The TSRA is proud to support projects connecting local people with opportunities for work, training and career options during construction to completion,” Ms Yusia, who is also the
TSRA’s portfolio member for economic development, said the accommodation would support economic opportunities. “It is perfect timing for a new, affordable accommodation option to open in Bamaga for tourists, visitors and local families ahead of the Northern Peninsula Area Cultural Festival in June,” she said. “The Bamaga Motel will continue to generate important jobs and training opportunities for community members as part of everyday business operations. “It is important we work together in strong partnerships
with stakeholders, Traditional Owners and historical owners to continue to develop and enable our region to thrive,” she said. Outgoing BEL general manager Chris Foord said: “It requires a lot of cooperation between a Prescribed Body Corporate, council and the land trust, and TSRA to bring this to fruition,” he said. “For future projects, the key issues of land issues and leases and Native Title need to have a united approach.” The new Bamaga Motel is located behind the tavern. Visitors can now make bookings.

All-female program given the tick INDIGENOUS women were the focus of a new heavy machinery operation training program coordinated by Cape York Natural Resource Management. The women, from Hope Vale, Laura, Cooktown and Mossman, were training for their Level 1 tickets at a gully erosion remediation site at Lakeland. It was the first female-only training session conducted by Cape York NRM and was developed to encourage more women to take part in a broader project designed to increase understanding on how to manage erosion and to improve employable skills. “The first two rounds of training were mostly male participants,” said CYNRM’s sustainable industries manager Michael Goddard. “We chose to have an all-female round to make attendees feel more comfortable learning alongside their peers.” The training involved Level 1 skills in skid steer, roller and loader operation. For participant Fenice Yoren, the goals were clear. At 28, the Hope Vale woman was determined to get all the heavy machinery tickets she needed to get a job in earthmoving in Cape York. Ms Yoren wanted her qualifications to include her loader Level 1 ticket, and to consolidate her knowledge and skills in roller and skid steer operation.
Eight women from the Far North ventured out to Lakeland for an all-female Indigenous training program aimed specifically at the use of heavy machinery.
Gaining Level 1 tickets on machinery was a key component of the program.
She said the all-women’s training was “a lot of fun, with a lot of laughter”. She undertook similar training last year in a mixed group which was “a bit frustrating”.
“We didn’t get as much time on the machines,” she said. Anselm Harrigan, from Normanby Station, thought the session was a “fantastic” idea. It was the second time Anselm
Maintenance dredging notice
had been involved in the training of young recruits as an Indigenous cultural liaison. “It gives them an opportunity to get out there, and doesn’t make them think in an Indigenous way, you know, that men have got to do everything and they’ve got to stay put in the camp,” he said. “There are a lot of people out there looking for operators, and females now are stepping up. “This new generation – this is where it starts.” Mr Harrigan said the training sessions were opening new doors for young Indigenous people. “It’s good to see all the young rangers and people coming through that are keen to get their machinery tickets,” he said.
“It’s good for a future resource ... and by getting a ticket it makes them feel like they have something to look towards in the future. “Especially in remote communities where they don’t get a lot of opportunities and people like us are trying to support our own people to get more hands on deck.” Ms Yoren will join her eight coparticipants this month for a presentation of certificates by Cape York NRM. “All of the women were successful in gaining Level 1 tickets in roller, skid steer and loader operations so we’re pretty happy with these results,” Mr Goddard said. The project was funded by the Queensland government’s Natural Resources Investment Program.

April - June 2022 | Alert for Weipa community North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation (NQBP) will undertake maintenance dredging from late April at the Port of Weipa. Dredging will also be completed at Amrun on behalf of Rio Tinto. The project will take up to eight (8) weeks to complete. The dredge vessel TSHD Brisbane, as well as support vessels, have restricted manoeuvring capability. Local and visiting boaties are asked to take care and notice of all warning flags and lights. Maintenance dredging needs to be carried out to ensure that safe, navigable shipping depths are maintained. Environmental controls and management measures will be implemented throughout the program to minimise the risk of any potential impact on the marine environment. Your cooperation and understanding is appreciated.

SPORT IN BRIEF Winner for Rob Roy WEIPA businessman Rob Roy might have produced another good two-year-old after Evil Woman won on debut at Innisfail on Saturday. The two-year-old is a half-sister to Keys Please, who also showed promise as a juvenile for Roy. Evil Woman was sent out as an $8 pop on Saturday but won like she was odds-on as Wanderson D’Avila guided her to an easy 2.5-length win. Gordonvale trainer Ralph Baker will no doubt be eyeing off some rich two-year-old races at the back end of the season.
Boost for racing industry THE state government is delivering a boost to Queensland’s racing industry through a new sustainable funding model that should help once-a-year race clubs like Cooktown and Laura. “There are 125 racing clubs across Queensland. For 85 of those clubs, a race meeting is the biggest or second biggest event in their community each year,” Treasurer Cameron Dick said. The changes include: * A new 5 per cent racing levy added to the betting tax (also known as the Point of Consumption tax); * Increasing the proportion of betting tax revenue that goes directly to the racing industry from 35 per cent 80 per cent. “At present, a lot of the funding that goes to the racing industry is in the form of short-term government funding programs,” the Treasurer said. “Now, the industry will have the certainty of knowing they will get 80 per cent of the betting tax, and if the size of the pie grows, so too will their share.”
The Northern Peninsula Area State College primary school team won three of its four matches in the AFLQ Schools Cup in Cairns last month.
NPA team shines in Cairns LAST month, a primary school team from Northern Peninsula Area State College took part in the 2022 StreetSmarts AFLQ Schools Cup in Cairns. “This was the first time in the event’s history that there had been a team from outside
the Cairns region competing, let alone a team from Cape York,” said Kieran Sciberras, AFL Cape York’s development coordinator. The team of 16 students travelled down to Cairns on Thursday, May 26 to take part in the
event on the Friday at the North Cairns Watson’s Oval. The event opened with the NPA team performing a war cry alongside residents of AFL Cape York House for boys – who had taught the NPA students the war cry the previous evening.
“The NPA team won three out of four games in what was their first competitive AFL carnival,” Sciberras said. The team, comprising 14 boys and two girls, had representatives from both the Bamaga and Injinoo junior campus.
Big game for Socceroos AUSTRALIA will play the UAE in a do-or-die AFC World Cup qualifying playoff match in Doha on Wednesday morning with the side determined to keep the nation’s qualification hopes alive. The team has been gearing up for the must-win game with a week-long training camp in Qatar, which included a narrow 2-1 win against Jordan in a friendly match last Thursday. The Australia-UAE game kicks off at 4am Queensland time and will be shown on Channel 10. If the Socceroos win, they will play South American challenger Peru six days later, on Tuesday, June 14, for a spot in the World Cup later this year. That game will also be played in Doha.
The Weipa Raiders have made a strong start to the 2022 season with wins against Napranum in round one and Aurukun in round two.
Raiders undefeated after 36-20 win THE Weipa Raiders continued their strong start to the Western Cape Rugby League competition with a convincing 36-20 win against Aurukun at Andoom Oval. Energised after beating their local rivals a fortnight earlier,

the Raiders were in control from start to finish against the Kang Kang, playing their first match of the season after an opening round bye. Weipa recruit Richard Joinbee put on a clinic in the centres, scoring three tries and kicking
four goals. Other try scorers for the home side were Thomas Ketchell, Gregory Hudson, Joe Bond and Trevor Callope. There were no try scorers recorded for Aurukun. In the later game, the Napranum Bulldogs bounced back
from their round one defeat to trounce the undermanned Old Mapoon Brumbies. In a one-sided contest, the Bulldogs won 86-6. No try scorers were supplied. The next round of matches will be in Weipa on June 18.

Awesome foursome
SPORT IN BRIEF Butler’s June medal STEVE Butler wasn’t rapt with his round but it was still more than enough to win the June monthly medal at Cooktown on Saturday. The perfectionist had 77 off the stick for a nett 66 to beat Sam Godfrey-Roberts, who had the same gross score but carded a nett 68. Butler said despite long sessions of chipping and pitching on his 10-acre property, he had developed the yips in his approach game. A few shanks were countered by a 60-metre hole out on the 17th for a par. John McArthur finished third on Saturday with a nett 68 and that was enough to wrap up the wet season version of the Race to the Bay.
Countback required THE women dominated at Carpentaria Golf Club on Saturday, with all prizes going to the fairer sex. Jay Murray and Giembra Busmer both had 35 points in the stableford event, but it was Murray who prevailed in the countback. The event was sponsored by Redbuilt Refrigeration and the nearest to pin prizes also went to the women. Viv Chan was closest on the 7th and Murray claimed the 18th. Due to the Weipa Fishing Classic, there will be an extended competition this week, running from Wednesday to Saturday.
KAYDEN Burley led his fours team to victory in the Weipa Bowls Club men’s champions over the weekend. Burley skippered the team of Jonty Millard, Gary Squires and Ben Moore to a strong victory. The foursome will now advance to the Far North champion of champions event later this year. In the women’s championships, Beth Dall led her foursome to a come-from-behind victory. The skipper combined with Norma Roberts, Ma King and Annie Blane to take the trophy on Sunday after dropping a match on Saturday. There were four teams in the women’s event and five in the men’s division.
Weipa Bowls Club men’s champions Kayden Burley, Jonty Millard, Gary Squires and Ben Moore.
Dawnies win for Jim THIRTEEN players took to the Weipa course on Sunday morning and it was Jim Hunter who prevailed, beating Grant Crossley for the honours. Jamie Hutton had the longest drive, while Theo Hadgis picked up the nearest to pin. Dylan Wonfor claimed the Hoffman’s.
Big Wackers field A MASSIVE 19 players turned out for the Wednesday Wackers at Weipa as Vicky Molloy won on a countback Despite the big field, none of the players hit either green eligible for nearest to pin prizes. Helen Sabatino’s handicap did her no favours and she picked up the Bradman’s.
The North Queensland Gold Stars celebrate their narrow grand final win over the Capras at Redcliffe on Saturday.
Gold Stars win thrilling GF A FORTUNATE bounce of the ball set up a last-minute try to give the North Queensland Gold Stars a thrilling victory in Saturday’s state championship final. The Gold Stars and Central
Queensland Capras were both in their first decider and looking to take the premiership home but it was the Gold Stars who prevailed 14-12. The Capras led 14-10 with
30 seconds to go and looked to have the game wrapped up, but Sarah Field had other ideas. She put up a kick that landed behind the Capras goal line, only to take a nasty bounce and
fall in the lap of Gold Stars centre Shaniah Power, who went on to score the winner. The victory sets up the entry of the Cowboys into the NRLW this season.

Cape York Weekly recognises that our Indigenous forefathers have lived on this land for some 30,000 years. We pay our respects to the Traditional Owners, both past, present and future, of the numerous clan groups on Cape York Peninsula. The newspaper is based in Weipa, on the land of the Alngith people, and we acknowledge them as the custodians of this land.
