Entsch triumphant

WARREN Entsch’s perfect record at the ballot box remains after he held off a strong challenge to win a staggering ninth term as the Member for Leichhardt.

While the LNP veteran copped a swing against him, the bulk of the votes he lost went to minor parties rather than Labor rival Elida Faith.

The ALP was hopeful of picking up Leichhardt and dedicated more resources than ever before to win the seat, but ultimately failed to put any kind of significant dent in the two-party preferred margin.

Mr Entsch will now be an MP in opposition after the Liberal Party was blown away nationally.

The 71-year-old will be one of the last remaining “moderate” Liberal Party MPs in Canberra and told Cape York Weekly that he hoped he could help steer the party back to government in what he says will be his final term in parliament.

In a wide-ranging interview, he spoke about some of the major personal sacrifices he had made to not only represent the Far North, but also to maintain a family life.

At his post-election party on Saturday, Mr Entsch acknowledged the campaign of Labor and the Greens, and said he would work hard to make sure Leichhardt got its fair share under an Anthony Albanese-led government.

TCHHS has big plans for future of Weipa Hospital

ADDITIONAL services, increased staff accommodation and more car parking are being slated for the Weipa Hospital as the region's health service looks to the future.

The Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service has been consulting with the Weipa community but will seek additional input from the public as part of its master plan review.

“With a master plan, it’s good to do a review every five years,” said TCHHS asset management director Dean Davidson.

“The plan was completed prior to the Torres and Cape clinical services plan so it’s important to re-align it.

“A lot has changed with the addition of a CT scanner, three renal chairs and we are currently adding a birthing unit.”

The review is being undertaken by consultancy firm Destravis Group and includes the Nanum

and Rocky Point (old hospital) sites in Weipa.

It provides strategic direction for the development for the next five to 20 years.

The draft proposal has been developed in alignment with the TCHHS clinical service plan and includes the following: • Increase in the number of residential aged care beds from 10 to 18; • Increase emergency department beds from 5.5 to 10; and • Increase inpatient beds from 10 to 20.

A further two chairs would be added to the renal ward, and one for chemotherapy.

Women’s services, including the new birthing service, would be co-located and the operating theatres upgraded.

The proposal also includes upgrades to medical imaging, including the addition of mammography, outpatient, GP facilities and a staff hub.

of housing up to 48 people, has also been proposed for Rocky Point.

Six units for off country accommodation could also be built on-site at Nanum, with the final construction proposing 232 parking spots.

TCHHS chief executive Bev Hamerton said the construction would take place in stages, and it was proposed to begin with the new residential aged care facility on the eastern side of the current hospital site, on land already owned.

She said the proposed redevelopment was the product of extensive internal and external consultation to identify the key health priorities for Weipa and the surrounding communities.

“We are listening to the community and staff and understand there is a growing need, in particular, for more aged care beds and expansions to the existing emergency department and inpatient beds,” she said.

“We want to deliver a facility that will adequately service the area well into the future.”

Mr Davidson said feedback from the community was vital before refining the proposal.

“This facility is here for the people of Weipa, Napranum, Mapoon and other surrounding communities, so we would appreciate feedback from anyone across the region,” he said.

“In our discussions with the Weipa Town Authority, they have been very supportive.

“This is all about increasing self-sufficiency in Weipa and benefiting the community members so they can minimise travel out of the region.”

Mr Davidson said once the feedback was received and plans adjusted and costed, the health service would then seek funding, meaning it could take several years before any action.

New Rio Tinto GM brings fresh perspective to role

SHONA Markham says she is loving life in Cape York – especially the warmer weather – as she adjusts to her new role as the general manager for Rio Tinto’s Weipa operations.

However, it’s the challenge of the job that has been the most enjoyable aspect for the mother of three, who was sent north to help steer Rio Tinto’s bauxite mines back on track.

“I’m loving it. It’s a really big change compared to what I was doing (in Bell Bay, Tasmania),” she told Cape York Weekly.

“I’m loving the town and all the things that I knew I would like about Weipa and the Cape.

“The kids went for a bike ride on their own to a friend’s house and I felt completely fine about their safety. Those are the little things that plenty of Australians can’t do.”

By Rio Tinto’s own admission, the Weipa operations have not been meeting their high standards.

It’s not just about tonnes on ships, either, although that is a big part of the problem.

Rio Tinto Weipa has been in a cultural transition and attitudes have needed to be adjusted.

The company’s treatment of contractors, for starters, was cited as a major issue in an independent report commissioned

by Rio Tinto.

Then there are the workers.

Nearly half of all employees who responded to the external review of the workplace culture commissioned by Rio Tinto said they had been bullied, while racism was found to be common across a number of areas.

Ms Markham did not shy away from addressing the issue and said she was eager to make changes that improved the wellbeing of employees.

Which is why she is starting at the bottom and working her way up.

Rather than bog herself down with meetings with superintendents and managers, Ms Markham has been out on site, talking with the workers and getting a feel for their day-today life.

She’s spent at least one day a week at Amrun (south of Weipa) and has even jumped in a haul truck to hear first-hand from the operators.

“We have the most incredible people running our operations,” the GM said.

“My job is to support them.”

One example of making life easier for the workers is addressing a shortage of toilets, especially for women, on the mine sites.

“It’s a small thing but if you listen, and then go and put toilets at the right place, you are valuing your workers more than you are putting tonnes out the gate.

“The tonnes will take care of themselves if we do those little things properly.”

One issue Rio Tinto Weipa has suffered from in recent years is the plethora of people in acting positions.

Often the company triggered a chain reaction which would see one person go on long-service leave and result in several people in acting roles.

“We have moved quickly to get people in permanent roles and that will solve a lot of problems,” Ms Markham said.

As for production, the good news is that Weipa is on track to meet its target this year after a shaky start to 2022.

“We are confident we will hit our production plans,” she said.

At Amrun, for example, she acknowledged the hard working team in the beneficiation plant that managed to turn things around.

“There had been a real bottleneck in the bene plant and we were behind production plan in March,” Ms Markham said.

“At one point you would be knee-deep in bauxite but now it’s in a very good state from a housekeeping perspective.

“We were 100,000 tonnes ahead of plan in April.”

There were two major belt failures in March and Rio Tinto says its now addressing main-

tenance plans and making sure spare parts are on-hand.

“The positive about those breakdowns is that we were able to bring forward our scheduled maintenance from May and get it done in March, so we won’t have that shutdown in May.” Apart from running two major mines that are divided by two large rivers, the Rio Tinto Weipa role also comes with the responsibility of the township.

And while the Weipa Town Authority runs almost independently of the mining company, there is still a lot of input required from the GM. Ms Markham said she was aware of the biggest issues in town – housing, child care and normalisation – and said she wasn’t far from announcing plans for at least two of them.

“Those are critical issues and we are developing a plan to solve housing and child care,” she said.

“We don’t think it’s wholly Rio Tinto’s issue to solve but we recognise we are a leading player and need to turn talk into action.”

COVID cases steady, flu a big concern CONFIRMED flu cases are now outpacing active COVID-19 cases in Cape York and the Torres Strait, the region’s health service says.

Last week, there were 78 active COVID cases within the Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service region but confirmed influenza cases have gone past 150.

“While COVID-19 remains prevalent in our communities and throughout Queensland, it is clear we are now seeing a significant surge in influenza cases throughout our region,” chief executive Bev Hamerton said.

“Worryingly, we are not even close to reaching the peak period for influenza infections, which is expected to be in August.

“So, we expect to see many more cases in the weeks ahead.

“For both COVID and influenza, vaccination is the easiest and safest way to protect yourself, your loved ones, and the community.

“Vaccination can reduce the severity of symptoms and prevent the need for people to be hospitalised.”

The influenza vaccination is recommended for all people aged

Blue card bill has support: Katter KATTER’S Australian Party leader Robbie Katter says he was met with a strong show of support for his Blue card bill when he visited Cape York this month.

The bill, which is currently being considered by the Queensland Legal Affairs and Safety Committee, is designed to help stabilise some of Queensland’s most vulnerable communities out

of the welfare system and into meaningful employment.

He met with the Napranum, Pormpuraaw and Kowanyama councils, as well as the Napranum Local Justice Group, where he discussed the re-introduction of his bill.

It would allow eligible people to request that Indigenous community leaders consider certain

blue card applications and help overcome the huge impediment of getting people into work.

“The meetings were very productive; the community leaders I met with were enthusiastic about getting these changes over the line to empower locals to work and make valuable contributions to their communities,” Mr Katter said.

Entsch slams critics, vows to see

WARREN Entsch says he has no intention of pulling the pin early and will see out his ninth and final term in parliament.

Critics of the MP were quick to predict that the Member for Leichhardt would retire early and force a by-election.

“These are the same imbeciles and brainless cretins that have been on their keyboards telling lies that the Australian government is signing over its sovereignty for our hospitals and health system to the World Health Organisation,” he said.

“It’s just absolute rubbish.

“I have kept just about every single promise I have made in politics and I will see out the full duration of this term.”

Entsch announced after the 2019 election that he would be retiring, only to change his mind and seek another term.

“Circumstances changed. I was getting a lot of people in the community encouraging me to run again and then COVID hit,” he said.

“The calls kept getting louder as they didn’t want Far North getting an inexperienced MP when we were one of the worst regions impacted by COVID. And we have a long way to go to recover.”

Entsch said if people didn’t want him to run again it would have been reflected in Saturday’s

vote. While the Liberal Party was decimated in Victoria, NSW and Western Australia, the LNP held reasonably firm in Queensland.

At the time of writing, Entsch was winning the two-party preferred count 53.24 to 46.76.

He said this year’s election was the hardest he had fought since

first running in 1996, when he won against Labor incumbent Bill Dodds as John Howard led a Coalition landslide.

“It was a respectful campaign from Labor but they sensed their chance and put a lot more work in this time around,” he said.

“It wasn’t like other elections.

There was a lot of pressure on my team and they did a great job.”

AN ULTIMATUM DEALS had to be brokered on both a political level and personal level for Entsch to run again.

“I was serious about retiring.

I had made that promise to my wife,” he said.

“But when COVID came and I decided to run again, I had to have some tough conversations.

“I said to the Prime Minister and Treasurer that I would put my hand up but it was going to cost them two things.

“I wanted the insurance pool for northern Australia and I wanted the microgrid for the Daintree.

“I said ‘do those things or I won’t sign up’ and credit to them, they delivered.

“I’ve been calling for a power solution for the Daintree for 24 years and it’s now going to happen.

“The insurance pool starts this year, with a review in 12 months, and I hope that it’s a major success and can be used as a template for an insurance pool for fire and flooding in places down south.”

Perhaps the most difficult thing was convincing wife Yolonde that she would see more of him.

“How do I fulfil my promise to my wife and family that I would have more time with them? That was the toughest bit,” the MP said.

“I had set up an Angus stud on my farm (at Malanda). I made the most difficult decision and sold all of my cattle.

“I’m now agisting the bulk of the property so when I get up there and have a day off I can spend it with the family and not in the paddock.

“It was a big sacrifice but I have made a few of them over the years, I think.”

out the whole term Entsch is referring to his decision in 2007 to step down for a term to spend more time with his teenage son.

“I remember making a promise to him several years earlier that I would take a break and spend that time with him,” Entsch said.

“A lot of people forget how much that cost me, not that I would change things.”

Entsch was a parliamentary secretary and on track to be a minister when he stood down.

The defined benefit pension was also scrapped, meaning his retirement prevented him from cashing in later in life.

“When I came back in 2010 I had lost that seniority as well,” he said.

“I was the chief opposition whip for three years and when we won back government I chose not to accept a portfolio because I didn’t want to be tied to the rules of cabinet.”

Outside of the inner circle, the Far North Queenslander was able to push his same-sex marriage agenda, which was eventually legislated in 2017.

“I have always been true to myself,” Entsch said.

election campaign but didn’t venture to Cape York.

“I’d love to get him up to look at the work we have done with the PDR and the opportunities it has created,” Entsch said.

“That’s a project that needs to be finished and we’ll need his help.”

Entsch said he had a lot of respect for the PM, a fellow 1996 parliament debutant.

“I wouldn’t say that we are friends, but we have a positive relationship,” he said.

“There’s absolutely no issue if we needed to travel together and discuss local issues.”

SPRAY FOR ACTIVISTS WHILE they had no impact on the election result, Entsch saved his final spray for the far-left organisation GetUp.

Witnesses at polling booths saw GetUp representatives handing out food to Cape York voters and encouraging them how to vote a specific way.

“It was quite offensive … going out into our remote Indigenous communities and offering them bananas and packets of potato chips for their vote,” he said.

“They are not a political organisation, they are an activist organisation, offering baubles and trinkets.

“I’m glad to see their impact up here is less than zero.

“It is my intention to put in a formal complaint about them.

“They shouldn’t have a tax deductibility status.

“GetUp is not a political or a religious organisation – they are just a bunch of activists.

THE Australian Electoral Commission either needs more funding or it needs a kick up the backside.

This year’s federal election saw the removal of two major polling booths in Cape York, while another was nearly lost at the last minute due to a lack of staffing.

The Aurukun and Napranum voting booths had been slated for removal in advance and those communities were instead visited by a mobile booth prior to Saturday, but sources told Cape York Weekly that voter turnout was well down.

The Kowanyama booth was staffed on Saturday, but not before an urgent callout from the AEC earlier in the week that it was desperately trying to find people to man it.

But nothing was relayed to local media.

The AEC has a budget in excess of half a billion dollars to run federal elections, yet didn’t place one job ad in Cape York Weekly or any other regional newspaper.

Instead they relied on paid Facebook advertising.

When the remote polling booths visited the likes of

Mapoon, Laura, Aurukun, Seisia and Napranum, there wasn’t an ad or a story in the newspaper to let the community know they were coming.

It’s just not good enough.

If you aren’t going to run polling booths in these communities on election day, you have to give plenty of notice about when you are going to be there.

It’s a disgrace that two communities the size of Aurukun and Napranum did not have a polling booth on Saturday.

But before the AEC gets to the next election, it must dedicate funding towards lifting the enrolment rate in Cape York.

There are far too many people eligible to vote that are not enrolled.

Invest the time into educating the communities about the importance of enrolling and how they can make a difference at the polling booth.

And educate people about preference voting.

The informal voting rate was abysmal on Saturday and most of it can be put down to a lack of knowledge on the matter.

Remote Australians are just as important as those living in the cities and their vote carries just as much weight.

Time to step up, AEC.

How Cape York voters delivered

DON’T take the Cape for granted.

That’s the message for all future candidates in Leichhardt after Cape York voters helped deliver Warren Entsch another term.

Of the 11 polling places in the Cape, Entsch won the two-party preferred count in eight of them, with Bamaga the only exception.

On Saturday, voters at Bamaga gave Elida Faith a small margin in the two-party preferred count.

Weipa’s Saturday ballot box went slightly in favour of Labor, but Entsch smashed the town’s overall vote when pre-polling was included.

Cooktown also went the way of the veteran MP. For the first time, there were no voting booths in Aurukun or Napranum on election day, with the Australian Electoral Commission sending mobile teams to those communities – as well as other smaller places on the Cape – in the lead-up to the election date.

Speaking to Cape York Weekly, Mr Entsch thanked voters on the Peninsula for backing him again.

“We have delivered a lot of great outcomes for the Cape and I’m sure that was recognised,” he said on Sunday.

“The sealing of the Peninsula Developmental Road has been one of the best things we have done as a government and I really want to make sure the Albanese govern-

ment continues that work. It’s been a massive winner for the region and the state government has been a great partner.

“We’ve put in better telecommunications throughout the region and I wasn’t finished yet.

“Interestingly I won at Lockhart River, which some might find surprising.”

Entsch had drawn plenty of criticism about the lack of good telecommunications in Lockhart and just before the election announced funding for Telstra to fix the issue.

Bowls Club greens is unlikely to be realised, with Labor not matching the commitment.

Mr Entsch and the bowls club will now have to lobby the opposition to find the money in the next budget.

The results in Cape York would no doubt be disappointing for Labor. In state elections, the ALP usually shines in the polling booths on the Peninsula.

Ms Faith was dominant in the Torres Strait, winning the vote on Thursday Island.

For the other candidates, there was little to celebrate.

Former magistrate Pat O’Shane was the only Indigenous woman on the ballot paper and picked up her share of primary votes for the Socialist Alliance party – perhaps partly to do with being on top of the ballot paper.

Katter’s Australian Party candidate Rod Jensen performed well on his visits on the western Cape and was rewarded with some good primary votes in places like Weipa.

Cooktown voters are always a little bit different to the rest of Leichhardt and Pauline Hanson’s One Nation candidate Geena Court had her best result there with third

place behind Mr Entsch and Ms Faith.

NEWS IN BRIEF New CEO for Cook Shire MAYOR Peter Scott and his colleagues on the Cook Shire Council will today (Tuesday) appoint a new chief executive officer.

The council recently hosted two candidates in the community and have decided on the next person to steer the shire’s administration.

The new CEO will replace Linda Cardew, who is retiring.

Youth night in Weipa THE Weipa Town Authority is bringing back youth nights in the community.

Once a hit in the 1980s and 1990s, the youth nights will be a monthly occurrance at the WASP in Rocky Point.

There will be sports to try out, chill-out areas where they can listen to music, and there will be hot food and cold drinks to purchase.

The first one for 2022 will be this Friday night, from 6pm til 9pm.

Night patrol program a test case for Cape York NEW night patrols run by a community-led service are hoped to improve public safety in Kowanyama.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Minister Craig Crawford last week visited the community to announce a $165,000 grant for a 12-month pilot program.

“Council security officers will engage with at-risk people aged 15 years and over to build positive relationships and intervene early, diverting them to culturally safe activities and support services,” Mr Crawford said.

“Kowanyama’s established

Community Police Program, which is currently self-funded by council, has been a success and this investment allows it to expand into a standalone security enterprise that includes a community night patrol.”

Mr Crawford said the program was one of several community safety initiatives developed by the Kowanyama community as part of the council’s Community Safety Plan.

“The new night patrol is one of those locally led initiatives, that will make the community safer by connecting people who are at risk with the supports they

need, when they need it,” he said.

“Community Safety Plans are developed in partnership with local leadership, and because that approach is embedded in every part of the process, they draw on local strengths to develop solutions and support local aspirations, to grow stronger, safer communities.”

Kowanyama mayor Robbie Sands said the social reinvestment grant would build upon the safety and wellbeing programs currently on offer within Kowanyama.

“The investment ensures a

community-led approach to economic participation through a business incubation framework,” he said.

“The Kowanyama Aboriginal Shire Council appreciates the ongoing partnership with the department and looks forward to continuing to improve community safety.”

Police Minister and champion for Kowanyama Mark Ryan said the funding was delivering on the state government’s commitment to a new way of working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities.

Torres Strait celebrates

THE Torres Strait Islands will come to life this week ahead of major celebrations in the region.

This Sunday marks 30 years since the late Bernard Namok presented his Torres Strait flag design in a competition by the Island Coordinating Council.

The flag was presented to the people of Torres Strait on May 29, 1992 at the sixth Torres Strait Cultural Festival.

In the same year, it was recognised by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission and given equal prominence with the Aboriginal flag.

Just days later, on Friday, June 3, the Torres Strait will also celebrate Mabo Day.

Doomadgee inquest AN inquest into the deaths of three people who died from complications associated with a preventable disease will travel to their remote community to hear evidence from family members.

Yvette, 18, Ms Sandy, 37, and Kaya, 17, all had rheumatic heart disease and died after presenting for medical treatment on separate occasions in 2019 and 2020.

The first day of the inquest in July will take place in Doomadgee.

A pre-inquest hearing in Cairns on Friday heard that the adequacy of Gidgee Healing and Doomadgee Hospital’s services and care, particularly in the months before their deaths, would form part of the inquest’s central scope.

The Dad’s Army team received a hero’s reception as they crossed the finish line in Chillagoe on Sunday. They won the over-55s category.

Great Wheelbarrow Race returns in style

Mixed team Rusty Wheels were the overall winner of the three-day race.

ONE of the Far North’s popular events returned on the weekend as the Great Wheelbarrow Race was run and won.

Now in its 19th year, the three-day race was proposed to inject cash and visitors into small towns like Almaden, Dimbulah, Chillagoe and Mutchilba.

It was also established to honour the trail-blazing feats of early pioneers who would take wheelbarrows from Mareeba to Chillagoe with supplies.

This year’s race attracted 25 teams who walked and/or run the 140km from Mareeba to

Chillagoe, stopping overnight at Dimbulah and Almaden along the way.

Mareeba Shire councillor Locky Bensted has been a major driver of the event, which was last held in 2018.

Mr Bensted is well known in the Cape and has been the man on the microphone at several Weipa Bullrides.

A mixed team called Rusty Wheels was the overall winner.

The people’s choice winner was the over-55 team Dad’s Army, who were greeted with a big cheer on Sunday afternoon.

SPLASH POOL SERVICES April - June 2022 | Alert for Weipa community North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation (NQBP) will undertake maintenance dredging from late April at the Port of Weipa.

Dredging will also be completed at Amrun on behalf of Rio Tinto.

The project will take up to eight (8) weeks to complete.

The dredge vessel TSHD Brisbane, as well as support vessels, have restricted manoeuvring capability. Local and visiting boaties are asked to take care and notice of all warning flags and lights.

Maintenance dredging needs to be carried out to ensure that safe, navigable shipping depths are maintained.

Environmental controls and management measures will be implemented throughout the program to minimise the risk of any potential impact on the marine environment.

SPORT IN BRIEF Raiders win thriller THE Weipa Raiders kicked off the 2022 Cape Cluster rugby league season in style, beating neighbouring rivals Napranum in a thriller at Andoom Oval on Saturday.

It was the only match played, with the other teams enjoying a bye.

The Raiders and Bulldogs went toe to toe over four quarters (yes, quarters) and it was the Weipa side which prevailed 36-30.

Earlier, half a dozen people completed a Foundation 1 referee course, including Lockhart River mayor Wayne Butcher.

He, along with the others, put whistle in hand for the Raiders-Bulldogs game.

Red hot Cowboys to take on premiers without duo NORTH Queensland will be without representative stars Kyle Feldt and Jason Taumalolo for Friday’s clash against the defending premiers Penrith after the pair picked up injuries in the Cowboys’ Round 11 win over the Storm.

The Cowboys confirmed that Feldt had suffered an MCL tear which will sideline him for six weeks, while Taumalolo also sustained a lower grade MCL injury which will see him miss two to three weeks.

It’s a blow to the NRL’s red hot team after they produced a stunning second-half blitz to beat Melbourne 36-6 in Townsville on Saturday night.

Four tries in 12 minutes just after half-time ensured the Cowboys would make it six victories on the trot – their best sequence since their premiership year in 2015 when they won a club record 11 straight.

The Cowboys made the perfect start when Tom Gilbert produced a superb solo try from 30 metres out in the 11th minute after the Storm had opted for a short dropout.

The home side had their second try eight minutes later when Tom Dearden jumped in to dummy half and delivered a short ball to Reece Robson who powered over from close range.

A spilled bomb by Dean Ieremia early in the second half gave North Queensland a chance and it was winger Murray Taulagi grabbing another try in the left corner with a spectacular dive.

Taulagi had collected a Peta Hiku pass on the bounce and then when he was confronted by Smith in cover defence he took to the air and flew into the corner with a one-handed put-down.

Four minutes later the Cowboys were in again when Jeremiah Nanai continued his outstanding season with another try

and Todd Payten’s men were out to a 24-6 lead.

Scott Drinkwater continued the avalanche in the 52nd minute off a sweet Chad Townsend pass and the home side had piled on three tries in eight minutes.

Nanai made it a double in the 56th minute when Townsend put in a deft grubber and the young back-rower touched down for his 10th try of the season.

Wth 10 minutes to play, Taulagi was denied his second fourpointer when Xavier Coates showed great desperation to get underneath the Cowboys winger and deny him the try.

Friday night’s match kicks off at 6pm on Fox Sports.

Cross-country runners Bridie Maher, Tanna de Tournouer and Max Lynch are off to Brisbane.

Cross-country stars WESTERN Cape College will have three representatives at the state cross-country championships in Brisbane after great performances for Peninsula last week.

Tanna de Tournouer, Max Lynch and Bridie Maher will represent their school after shining on the Yungaburra circuit.

Bridie won her race for 2007-born girls, while Max was second in the 2009 boys.

Tanna qualified by finishing fifth in the 2012 girls’ division.

Murray finds form JAY Murray had 42 off the stick to be last week’s Wednesday Wackers winner.

Her nett 32.5 was enough to beat Jim Hunter, who was runner-up with 33.5.

Matt Byrne picked up the Bradman’s, but he had been playing off a plus handicap and finally gets back to scratch this week.

Nearest to pins in the 19-strong field went to Jim Lucas on the 15th and Pete Ross on the 18th.

The winning Mareeba team were all smiles after winning the Musgrave cricket tournament earlier this month.

He beat club president Grant Crossley, who had to settle for runner-up and a nearest to pin.

Ross Craven had the longest drive while Lucas Duvenhague rounded up the 10-person field with the Hoffman’s.

Flat championships WEIPA’S best golfers have gone missing for the Carpentaria Golf Club championships.

At the halfway mark, there have been no standout performances across the grades, with small fields, likely due to the format of back-to-back two-day weekends.

Luke Wheeler is leading A-grade from Ross Craven, while Dave Morgan is in front of Jim Taylor and Grant Crossley in B-grade.

Jeff Watson leads Conor Naiorkowski in C-grade.

In the women’s, Viv Chan holds a lead over Helen Sabatino in division one and Sharon Gardiner is edging out Jess Stecko in division two.

Winners are grinners.

The Mt Molloy team finished runner-up.

The games are played on the Musgrave Roadhouse airstrip. No air traffic control was required.

A TRADITIONAL Cape York cricket carnival has been revived after Musgrave Roadhouse played host to four teams for a Super 8s event earlier this month.

Played on the nearby airstrip, teams came from Cooktown, Mt Molloy, Mareeba and Musgrave.

The Mareeba team took home the trophy, beating Mt Molloy for the honours but all players went home in good spirits.

Andrew West was named the player of the carnival.

Corinne Stallan won the award for best female player, while Phil Cleall was the best junior.

Scott Stallan won the all-rounder gong and Adam Cronin was the most improved player.

Gary Cleall’s bowling and Zane Stallin’s batting were also recognised at the awards ceremony.

Organisers are hoping to make the event bigger and better next year and bring together teams from across the Cape.

Musgrave Roadhouse’s John and Mary McDowall said they appreciated the business and support.
