50 NEW HOMES FOR CAPE YORK
Politics plagues housing funding By MATT NICHOLLS MORE than 50 new homes will be built in Cape York communities to address major overcrowding issues, but the state government has taken all the credit, despite using federal funding. Not for the first time, the health and wellbeing of Queensland’s most remote and vulnerable residents has been politicised. State Member for Cook Cynthia Lui made the announcement last Friday, just eight days before the federal election. government stopped a decade-long program for Indigenous housing. However, $105 million was given to the state government last year and it was this funding that would be used to build the new homes in seven Cape York and one Torres Strait council area. “This is a purely political announcement,” Mr Entsch said. “They have had this money since last year and it gets announced just before the election, without giving any credit to the federal government which provided the funding.” The veteran MP, who is in the midst of a major fight to retain his seat, also teed off at Ms Lui.
