Cape York locals help a man fetch belongings from his Navara.

THE Archer River claimed another scalp on the weekend when a man driving a Nissan Navara was swept off the causeway.

Cape York Weekly has chosen not to identify the driver but he is well known in the region and knew of the dangers of crossing the river when in full flood.

Police are believed to be investigating the driver’s actions.

The Navara was wedged on the side of the causeway until a Toyota LandCruiser also drove across, with the wake of the water pushing the Nissan off the causeway.

Construction of a bridge across the Archer River starts soon but is not expected to be finished until next year, meaning at least one more wet season to deal with.

Teen in critical condition after quad bike incident A YOUNG man is fighting for his life in Townsville Hospital after suffering head injuries in a sickening quad bike incident in Weipa last week.

Recent Western Cape College graduate Rohan Ebner was directly flown by the Royal Flying Doctor Service to Townsville on Tuesday, April 26.

A spokesperson for Townsville University Hospital said yesterday: “The patient is in a critical condition.”

The 18-year-old was travelling on the rear rack of a quad bike on McLeod Drive when he fell off and sustained the serious head injuries.

Weipa Criminal Investigation Branch are investigating the incident.

Preliminary information suggests that around 12.50am, four men were on the quad bike until Rohan fell off.

He was transported to Weipa Hospital before an RFDS plane flew him directly to Townsville University Hospital.

“The other three men were not injured and are assisting Weipa CIB with their inquiries,” a police spokesperson said.

The incident happened just weeks after Weipa police announced a crackdown on quad bike use in the township.

“Heavy fines are applicable for drivers and passengers of

quad bikes if they do not comply with registration, licensing and the wearing of helmets,” he said.

“As a community, we need to change our attitudes towards

quad bikes or more serious injuries or fatalities will occur.

“Having to tell family and friends that their loved one has been seriously injured or killed is one of the hardest jobs we have, as police.

“That job is made even more difficult in small communities like Weipa, because we are more likely to know the people involved.

“You are committing the offences of driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle if you drive or ride a quad bike or ATV on a road or road-related area.

“You may also be committing other offences, such as failing to wear a helmet or drink driving.”

The community is also reminded that children under the age of eight are prohibited from riding quad bikes and utility offroad vehicles on roads and roadrelated areas. They are also not able to be passengers.

Community members are encouraged to continue to report sightings of quad bikes on the road or beaches to the police.

Safety tips for quad riders:  Wear an appropriate motorcycle helmet;  Use protective equipment like gloves and boots;  Carefully descend slopes;  Operate the quad bike at a safe speed;  Make sure all cargo is secured before riding; and  Do not operate a quad bike beyond your capabilities.

Telecommunications fix BOWLIES to improve connectivity WEIPA

THREE Cape York communities will today be announced as recipients of federal funding as part of the government’s Regional Connectivity Program.

Lockhart River, Seisia and Cooktown will all benefit from a combined $3.5 million to fix their broken or nonexistent telecommunications infrastructure.

And the good news for locals in those communities is that it isn’t dependent on the election result – the funding is in the budget.

Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch, who will fly to Cooktown today for the announcement, said he was thrilled for the three communities who had lobbied hard for better phone reception and data capability.

“This is a welcome investment in our region,” he said.

“We all know and have heard about the telecommunications dramas in Lockhart River and this upgrade should make them a thing of the past.”

Lockhart River is still operating on the 3G network and mayor Wayne Butcher has been trying for years to get a better service for his community.

Lockhart River is plagued by outages due to outdated technology which often fails in the wet season.

Mr Entsch said almost $1.7 million would be spent on solving the Lockhart River problem.

“The project involves two microwave ‘hops’ from the fibre at Batavia Downs to Lockhart River – providing improved handheld coverage to an area of approximately 186km2,” the MP told Cape York Weekly.

However, she also slammed Telstra for its attitude.

“It’s frustrating that Telstra can’t commit to funding these things by themselves and rely on government funding to support remote Indigenous communities,” she said.

“Having access to a reliable mobile phone service is a basic need and a basic right.

“People in Melbourne or Sydney don’t need a government to make a commitment for what is a basic service.”

Mr Entsch said almost $1.1 million would go to Telstra for a macro base that would provide new coverage in Seisia, New Mapoon and other parts of the Northern Peninsula Area.

“The project will enable improved voice mobile coverage,

wireless broadband and Internet of Things (IoT) network capability for local residents and support an increase in economic activity, particularly for local businesses,” he said.

COOKTOWN SPEEDS UP SLOW data has been an issue for Cooktown residents, especially in the tourist season and Cook Shire Council backed a proposal to improve the service.

“The $772,400 Cooktown project will deliver a new Telstra macro cell mobile site, providing improved handheld coverage to Cooktown residents, businesses and visitors,” Mr Entsch said.

“The project will provide improved coverage to an area of approximately 245km2 and provide new 4G coverage to the west side of Cooktown, including main thoroughfares, Rail-

way Avenue and Endeavour Valley Road and the airport.”

Mr Entsch said he was rapt that three projects in Cape York would get funding in what was a competitive program.

“The Regional Connectivity Program gets applications from all over Australia and there are communities that miss out but I am thrilled that these projects were successful because I know they will be life-changing for a lot of locals,” he said.

ARCHER TOWER MEANWHILE, the small cell Telstra tower at Archer River is expected to be installed later this month.

Roadhouse owner Brad Allan said he expected technicians to arrive on site “within weeks”.

“We are expecting them in mid to late May,” he said.

AUSTRALIANS NEED A STRONG TAFE SYSTEM TO REBUILD THE ECONOMY AND END THE SKILLS SHORTAGE CRISIS. Australia has a skills crisis with a predicted shortage of more than 200,000 workers in the next five years in critical areas such as aged care, disability care, childcare, ICT, carpentry, plumbing and many more.

Yet the Morrison Government has gone missing.

VET and TAFE funding is $8 billion lower since the Coalition Government was elected in 2013. And in the past three years under Scott Morrison as PM, TAFE has been denied the critical funding it needs to provide high quality vocational education for all students in state-of-the-art facilities.

Be patient, says IGA THE manager of Cooktown’s IGA is asking locals and tourists to be patient with supermarket staff.

“Cooktown is currently experiencing an increase in COVID cases, which affects us here at the store in more ways,” Eddie Cridland said in a social media post.

“We currently have a number of staff in isolation which is putting pressure on our day-to-day operations.

“Secondly, we are being inundated with home delivery orders from residents who are also in isolation.”

Mr Cridland asked locals who were able to do their shopping to avoid placing home delivery orders.

LONG-SERVING Weipa Bowls Club chairman Brad Edie is as red as they get – he’s a Labor man through and through.

But you suspect that might change on May 21 after the LNP promised his beloved second home $2.5 million to build a roof over the bowling greens.

Warren Entsch, who is facing a tough battle to be re-elected, said his government was making the commitment to allow bowlers to play year-round.

The funding includes money for the roof and to build two new synthetic greens.

Mr Entsch said it would also allow for the installation of lighting to ensure members can play at night, as well as the installation of fans to make the area more comfortable.

“The Weipa Bowls Club up-

grades formed part of my comprehensive plan for the Leichhardt community,” he said.

“This is about listening, acting and delivering for the community.

“The bowls club is a very important hub for the Weipa community, not only in a sporting sense but most certainly in a social sense.

“This project will allow the club to expand further, attract new members and hold additional competitions.

“It will give club members and players access to a yearround playing surface which will help bowlers develop their skills.”

Mr Edie, who has for years been seen handing out Labor’s how-to-vote cards in Weipa, said he was extremely grateful for the LNP’s election promise.

“On behalf of the Weipa

Bowls Club, it is my privilege to thank Warren for his extraordinary efforts in securing this grant,” he said.

“In combination with funds already available to the committee, the club, its members and the broader community will soon be enjoying a world-class facility for the benefit of current and future players of our sport.”

Weipa Bowls Club manager Tania Iti said having an allweather facility would be a boon for the club and the community.

“You know what it’s like in Weipa when it gets really hot.

You can’t play bowls out in that weather,” she said.

“This will give us a lot more options for competitions and social bowls, as well as other functions.”

She said the Weipa Bowls Club would contribute $500,000 towards the project.

“It’s a lot of money for us and even though we can afford it, it’s a massive investment,” the manager said.

“We need to get synthetic greens because the grass won’t grow with a roof over them.

“That will also lead to some savings for the club.”

Ms Iti said she wasn’t sure when the project would be completed, with the funding dependent on the LNP winning the election and finding a window for the construction.

Weipa Bowls Club members are now hoping that Labor comes to the party with the same funding promise.

Leichhardt’s candidate Elida Faith has visited the Weipa Bowls Club several times over the last four years because the club is traditionally known as being “Labor friendly”.

NPA language workshop THE Saybaylgaw Yangu Wakay team will be holding a language workshop in Bamaga and Seisia for two weeks in May, supported

by Bamaga Enterprises.

The team, comprising executive producer Jeffrey Aniba Waia, producer Andrew Belletty and linguist Jensen Warusam Waigana, along with Bamaga liaison Beverley Jacobs, are looking forward to working with local communities.

The project which aims to revitalise language speaking with the help of fluent KKY (Saibai language) speakers.

The team is building a website, dedicated to learning resources for the KKY language, and will be shooting videos and teaching language writing skills.

Mr Belletty says the goal was to create audio and visual materials for everyone to use to learn KKY, along with the face-toface annual workshops with communities to create engagement and grow awareness.

“Everyone is welcome to participate in the teaching and learning,” he said.

Two left in race for CEO position COOK Shire Council will interview two candidates on the ground this week with a view of appointing one of them as the next chief executive officer.

Outgoing CEO Linda Cardew announced her retirement last year and has a couple of months left in the chair to help the council deliver the 2022-23 budget and conduct a handover with her replacement.

Mayor Peter Scott said the next chief executive would have big shoes to fill but said the quality of candidates for the role was exceptional.

“We had over 30 applicants and there were some really good ones,” he said.

“The initial recruitment process was handled by Leading Roles and then it was up to myself and the deputy mayor (Robyn Holmes) and our HR manager to get through the applications.

“Once we had a shorter list we brought all the councillors in on the process. We got it down to about 12, then six and now two.”

Cr Scott said Cook Shire Council was a unique regional municipality and would not suit every person.

“What’s important is not just the technical ability and experience, but also the culture you bring to the role and create,” he said.

COUNCIL MEETING NOTES MEANWHILE, at last week’s scheduled April council meeting, the council awarded a $1.1 million contract to the Cairns-based company CIVFORM to replace Jensens Crossing Road Bridge.

“The existing bridge has reached the end of its useful life,” the council report said.

CAPE YORK REGION PACKAGE PENINSULA DEVELOPMENTAL ROAD STAGE TWO

COMMUNITY TASKFORCE  THREE key events were given the goahead by the council.

The Laura Races and Laura Rodeo were approved to be staged in May, while the Orin Aya Festival in September was also given the green light.

Around 2800 people are expected at the Homerule Rainforest Lodge-based event.  ARCHER River Quarry was granted permission to increase its capacity.

Bowyer Archer River Quarries asked to increase the annual volume of extracted material from 100,000 tonnes to 300,000 tonnes per annum, comprising of 290,000 tonnes of hard rock and 10,000 tonnes of sand.  COUNCILLORS will receive a small pay rise from July 1.

The mayor’s salary will rise by $2164 to $110,386 per annum.

The deputy mayor will receive $63,684, up $1249 from 2021-22, while councillors will receive an extra $1082 per year with an annual salary of $55,192.

Memorial pays tribute to Michael GONE but never forgotten.

A memorial paying tribute to Michael Bowden was unveiled in Weipa last month to coincide with the official opening of the footpath along Northern Avenue.

Parents, grandparents, siblings, in-laws, aunties, uncles and cousins – as well as friends – attended the special event.

Michael was tragically killed by

a motorist on Northern Avenue in 2018 after walking home from a post-Weipa Fishing Classic party.

His mum Rachael hopes that the new footpath will prevent another avoidable death.

“It’s a pity it wasn’t there in the first place,” she said.

“Hindsight is a wonderful thing, though, isn’t it?

“Hopefully the footpath keeps

people off the road and we don’t have another tragedy.”

Mrs Bowden said it was always hard for her and husband Scott to return to Weipa but was delighted with the memorial.

“It’s always a bit tough going back – even harder going to Northern Avenue,” she said.

“It seems like a long time ago but it also feels like yesterday.”

The family thanked the Weipa Town Authority for thinking of the family and paying tribute to their much-loved son, who was just 20 years old when he was killed.

“The plaque that we got done, with the photo and the cog, is the same one that is on his grave,” Ms Bowden said.

“It’s come up nicely and hopefully people remember Michael.”

COVID cases drop below 150 in Torres and Cape LOWERING case numbers in the region has allowed the Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service to resume some services throughout the region.

As of last Thursday, there were 131 active cases in the Torres and Cape.

Two of the active cases in the region were in hospital, while the remainder were being managed at home or other accommodation.

To date, accounting for those who have been discharged from quarantine, the Torres and Cape has recorded 5489 cases of COVID. “I would like to thank all communities for turning out

to be vaccinated over the past year since the start of our vaccination program in March last year,” said Torres and Cape HHS chief executive Bev Hamerton.

“This has helped slow the rate of transmission in the region.

“There have been less than 200 cases in the community for at least seven consecutive days.

“As a result, we have been able to move to Tier 3 of our COVID-19 recovery plan and resume services that were suspended to help us manage the surge in cases.

“While case numbers have dropped, it is impor-

tant we continue practising measures such as physical distancing, wearing a mask when unable to distance, handwashing, and staying home if unwell.”

Currently, 83 per cent of the eligible population aged 12 and over in the region is now fully vaccinated.

“To date, in addition to first and second doses, we have delivered 7553 booster vaccinations across the region,” Ms Hamerton said.

“We are also delivering vaccinations for children aged 5-11 years.

“To date, we have delivered 2339 vaccinations to the 5-11 age group.”

New event aims to put focus on violence issue TURNING the spotlight on Domestic and Family Violence Awareness Month is a key platform for Rio Tinto Weipa in May. The mining company is rolling out several initiatives to raise awareness about the problem, which has a higher rate in Cape York than in many other areas of Australia.

The main event will be the inaugural Dusk Run, to be held on May 28 in Weipa.

In partnership with the Weipa Running Festival and Weipa Town Authority’s May community markets, the Dusk Run will look to raise awareness and promote the message that domestic and family violence will not be tolerated.

Also in May, 200 purple ribbons will be added to the company’s vehicles, as well as those of contractors and support services and organisations in the community.

“It saddens me that in 2022 there are still adults and children dying at the hands of those who are supposed to love and care for them the most, in situations that are directly attributed to domestic and family violence,” Rio Tinto Weipa general manager Shona Markham said.

“Unfortunately, we are not immune as a community, and I feel passionately that we

should get the message out that help is available and remind everyone that we can all support those in need.

“At Rio Tinto, we can help in the first instance by ensuring all employees have access to information on support services in our region.

“In doing so, we are guaranteeing that not only do employees in need have access to information, but so do their work friends, colleagues and management teams.

“By raising awareness in our community and workplaces and supporting our peers to access professional services and response teams, we can make a difference in our communities and help eradicate domestic and family violence.”

Rio Tinto Weipa said it was committed to increasing support offered to employees and would ensure information related to domestic and family violence support services in the region was permanently available on the company Intranet page, along with the Rio Tinto’s Family and Domestic Violence and Abuse Guidance.

Weipa wins wettest title for the Cape

THE Weipa Airport was the wettest place in Cape York across the wet season, with more than 2.3 metres of rain recorded at the Bureau of Meteorology site.

It means the mining town is once again the recipient of the region’s figurative Golden Gumboot, winning it back from Lockhart River, which claimed it in 2021.

The official reading at Weipa Airport between October and the end of April was 2378.2mm, ahead of Weipa suburb Rocky Point at 2255.5mm.

Unsurprisingly, RAAF Base Scherger was third at 2097.4mm.

Lockhart River nearly pulled a Steven Bradbury.

The east coast community was suffering from a relatively dry wet season until April, but more than 900mm fell in the last month to lift them to fourth place with a total of 1860.6mm.

Laura once again had the driest rain gauge in the region, with just 794.7mm recorded for the wet season.

The small town was also the driest community in 2020-21 but received an extra 143mm.

There were some big winners and big losers across the latest wet season, with Merluna Station one of the victors.

The cattle station, located between Weipa and Archer River, recorded 1609mm for the season, more than 300mm up on the previous wet.

Weipa Airport, Southwell Station, Cooktown and Cape Flattery also received better rainfall than the previous wet season.

Although finishing fourth in the overall tally, Lockhart River had the worst wet season in comparison to the previous one.

They were short 460.8mm on last year’s tally.

Horn Island, Moreton Telegraph Station, Bramwell Station and the Archer River Roadhouse also recorded less rain than the previous season, but still copped more than enough.

There is still a chance for some unseasonable rain in early May according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

Dedicated WTA disaster officer acknowledged with IWD award

SHE was a pivotal player in keeping Weipa residents safe during the pandemic but Jo Moloney largely escaped the public eye.

However, those who know her best said she was a champion behind the scenes, working long days to ensure that Weipa and its surrounding communities were doing all they could to keep COVID-19 out of Cape York.

Late last month, Ms Moloney was surprised by her colleagues and the Queensland InspectorGeneral of Emergency Management with an International Women’s Day award for Excellence in Disaster Management.

building and when I got there it straight away looked like something different,” she said.

“The QFES team from Cairns was there looking schmick, as well as the police, SES, ambos and the WTA staff.”

WTA chair Michael Rowland said it was fitting recognition for a dedicated Weipa resident.

“She was dropped into the disaster management officer position right at the beginning of COVID and handled it so well,” he said.

Ms Moloney said the biggest challenge of the role was keeping up with the changes in the early stages of the pandemic.

“We were having meetings every day and every day there would be changes,” she said.

“I learnt something new every day.”

Crocodiles are changing their diet, research shows SCIENTISTS have uncovered evidence that suggests the diet of saltwater crocodiles has shifted away from marine prey towards landbased animals.

Researchers at Charles Darwin University compared bone samples from saltwater crocodiles killed around the 1960s, held at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, to those of contemporary saltwater crocodiles.

“We saw that crocodiles back then were primarily feeding on the estuaries, taking up fish, turtles, crabs,” Dr Mariana Campbell, who co-authored the research, said.

“Now they are primarily feeding upon the terrestrial environment, taking up feral pigs, buffalo and wallabies.

“We could see that the signature found on contemporary crocodiles, or crocodiles that we see around today, you can see that it’s more that they have been eating upon what we call the terrestrial food web.”

Dr Campbell said an increased number of feral pigs in freshwater floodplains, a reduction in estuarine prey, and more freedom to roam since the end of the crocodile-hunting era all could have contributed to why crocodile diets had changed.

The diet shift coincides with the

exponential increase in the Northern Territory’s crocodile population in the past 50 years.

A ban on hunting crocodiles in the Northern Territory was introduced in 1971, when it was estimated only 3000 crocs were left in the wild.

Thanks in large part to the protection of the species, it is estimated the NT’s saltwater crocodile population is now about 100,000.

“When they were protected, noone was really quite sure whether they could really recover,” Dr Grahame Webb, one of Australia’s most prominent crocodile scientists, said.

“But they did recover, and the whole sort of system changed, and the rest is history.”

Dr Campbell said the shift to a more land-based diet is not a behavioural change.

“It is simply to do with food availability, they are eating what they encounter,” she said.

The rapid change in the saltwater crocodile population, she said, was a success story.

“This is an incredible recovery, it’s something extremely difficult to do, and it’s something the Northern Territory can be proud of,” she said.

tor population and live alongside it.”

Dr Webb also welcomed the study.

“What I’m excited about is it just demonstrates the values of museums holding these big reference collections,” he said.

The research, he said, could lead to further studies into crocodile populations, including the prevalence of crocodile cannibalism as the population grew.

“As the crocs were recovering, crocs were eating other crocs. Cannibalism has become a really big issue, and that could be implicated in these results,” he said.

Shield is returned to community

A SHIELD, used during traditional stick fights between Aboriginal men of the Kowanyama region, has been returned to country more than 60 years after it was “collected” by a group of crocodile hunters.

The shield was found on the banks of the Mitchell River by three Brisbane men on an expedition to Cape York in 1959 and secreted away as a curio.

Viv Sinnamon, assisting manager and curator of the Kowanyama Collection, said he was contacted by a Brisbane man last month who had been given the shield, alongside a cutting from a 1959 Queensland Times article detailing the croc hunters’ adventures to the region.

“He was quite anxious; he’d been trying for quite a while to get the shield home,” Mr Sinnamon said.

“He was excited once he made contact and had worked out where it had come from.

“To people here a spear is more than a spear and a shield is more than a shield – it’s the story behind it, the knowledge of how to make it and the things they were used for that really interests everybody.”

Mr Sinnamon said the shield was made from softwood.

Dredging will also be completed at Amrun on behalf of Rio Tinto.

The dredge vessel TSHD Brisbane, as well as support vessels, have restricted manoeuvring capability. Local and visiting boaties are asked to take care and notice of all warning flags and lights.



The project will take up to eight (8) weeks to complete.

Maintenance dredging needs to be carried out to ensure that safe, navigable shipping depths are maintained.

Environmental controls and management measures will be implemented throughout the program to minimise the risk of any potential impact on the marine environment.

IMPLEMENTATION OFFICER

Reporting to the Implementation Manager, the Implementation Officer is the primary contact point with the eleven Traditional Owner Groups, who are signatories to the WCCCA, and Rio Tinto. This position contributes to assisting with the monitoring and implementation of objectives under the WCCCA and Strategic Plan in the areas of Employment and Training, Cultural Heritage, Community Liaison, reporting and data collection and the facilitation of Aboriginal community participation in cultural, environment and heritage management at a local and regional level.

We anticipate that applicants will have; - Minimum Year 12 education; - Knowledge and experience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, society and culture and an understanding of relevant issues preferably in relation to the WCCCA region - Ability and willingness to travel to and work in remote communities - Trained in or demonstrated previous experience in Education and Training (Tertiary qualifications in this area will be highly regarded but not essential) - Good interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively; and - C Class Driver’s license.

WARREN Brewer and Michelle Field have made it back-to-back wins in the Goodline Weipa Open after triumphing in the men’s and women’s divisions on the weekend.

Brewer, playing off a handicap of one, was all level at the halfway mark before producing a clutch Sunday round to win by six strokes.

Mossman up-and-comer Wayne Christensen had to settle for second place in the men’s field.

in doubt. The low-handicapper from Mossman in superb touch all weekend with gross rounds of 82 and 82 to win by a massive 31 strokes.

The women’s nett was much closer, with Field beating local Viv Chan by just one shot.

The men’s A-grade nett was won by club captain Jamie Hutton.

Brewer played down his win but was happy that he beat his 2021 score by one stroke.

He said the course was in great condition and the greens extremely quick after superintendent Steve Jensen went to work on the roller.

in Goodline Weipa Open “I’m surprised I had a better score than last year because the conditions were tough,” he said.

“The wind was out on Sunday and the greens were hard and fast.”

The champion said the 13th hole was a pivotal one in what had been a matchplay-like final round.

“I was up by a few shots but he had just pegged one back off me and then he lost his ball out of bounds,” Brewer said, referring to Christensen.

“It gave me a handy lead and I was able to play within myself and not take too many risks for the rest of the round.”

Hutton was full of praise for many on Sunday night, including Brewer, who produced some great golf.

“The Mossman golfers who came to support the club are very much appreciated by everyone in Weipa,” he said.

“To fly up and support our event is something we won’t forget and we hope we can return the favour by supporting your Open later in the year.”

Meanwhile in the Cairns Open, held in wet conditions, Weipa junior Tom Whittle finished runner-up by a stroke in the A-grade men.

SPORT IN BRIEF Head takes advantage A SMALL field took to the Carpentaria Golf Club for last week’s Wednesday Wackers and it was Steve Head who prevailed.

He had 44 off the stick for a nett 31 to beat Dave Morgan by four strokes.

There were no nearest to pins with the field size at nine, but Grant Crossley took out the Bradman’s.

Interestingly, his handicap went up after the previous week’s win – proving that golf is a mysterious game.

For those interested in social golf, you can play at Weipa from around 2.30pm to 4pm on Wednesdays and make some new friends.

There was no Dawn Busters golf on Sunday due to the Weipa Open but it will return this Sunday.

McArthur ace but Rolan still salutes at Cooktown JOHN McArthur closed out his round with an ace but even the eagle was not enough to claim victory at Cooktown Golf Club on Saturday.

The officer in charge of the Cooktown Police Station had to settle for runner-up as the red hot Mark Rolan once again took honours at Walker Bay. Rolan, who must be copping a barrage from the handicapper, scored 41 stableford points to be the winner.

could not stop his form, giving him six wins from his last eight rounds.

Those who played with Rolan said he drained putts from everywhere and every distance.

He almost joined McArthur in the ace club, with one tee shot finishing just 30cm from the pin.

While Rolan was the winner, the talking point was J-Mac’s hole in one on the last.

McArthur watched his ball hold its line against a howling wind and take two back-spin-

ning hops before dropping into the hole.

His 32 points was enough for second place, while Ben Sperring was third with 30 points.

Nearest to pins went to Rolan for 2/11, while McArthur claimed 14 and obviously 9/18.

This Saturday is the start of five weeks of big points in the Race to the Bay, with the May monthly medal, which will be followed by three rounds of the club championships, followed by the June monthly medal.

Saints lose a thriller but impress Cape York youths THEY may have left Cairns without the four points but St Kilda players won the hearts and minds of the boarders at AFL Cape York House.

The Saints lost a thriller against Port Adelaide at Cazalys Stadium on Saturday night, going down by a point in slippery conditions.

But the Melbourne-based AFL team managed to leave a mark on the Far North after arriving in the city early for a number of com-

munity-based activities. A number of players attended the AFL Cape York headquarters to catch up with students.

Indigenous stars Bradley Hill and Paddy Ryder were the most popular.

Saints coach Brett Ratten spoke to the students and offered up some words of wisdom to the youths.

AFL Cape York founder Rick Hanlon said he was thrilled with the visit and thanked St Kilda.
