PAUL Inderbitzin would love nothing more than to see supermarket trolleys full of bananas next week.

The Lakeland grower is hoping that National Banana Day on May 1 will encourage Cape York residents to buy more of the yellow fruit that is produced locally in the region.

“A lot of hard work and sweat goes into growing bananas,” Mr Inderbitzin said last week.

“If anyone has been on a farm before you know that bananas are a manual labour job – you can’t use machinery to pick them.”

The boss of Kureen Farming said bananas were a staple item in the Australian diet because they were relatively cheap, came in their own packaging and were extremely delicious.

“We are lucky that they are not a trendy fruit and that people buy them week in and week out,” he said.

“But we also want people to buy more, of course!”

As part of National Banana Day, the industry has created a Spotify playlist called Banana Karaoke and has signed up former Australian Idol star Rob Mills as an ambassador.

“It’s something we support because Australians have a habit of taking the agricultural sector for granted because we are so reliable,” Mr Inderbitzin said.

Lakeland banana grower Paul Inderbitzin is looking forward to National Banana Day on May 1.

Entsch the big winner as Labor rival draws bottom INCUMBENT politician Warren Entsch was the big winner at Friday’s ballot draw for the seat of Leichhardt.

The LNP veteran drew third on the ballot paper but well ahead of his main rival.

Labor candidate Elida Faith drew the bottom spot, 11th in total.

“It doesn’t matter where you sit on the ballot, it’s all about what the Far North Queensland community thinks on the day,” she told the Cairns Post.

“This was my second time around and I’m just as determined to represent Far North Queensland in Canberra.”

Kuku Yalanji woman Pat O’Shane drew the coveted top position for the Socialist Alliance Party.

“I’m absolutely happy with that, couldn’t have wished for better,” Ms O’Shane said.

There has been a surge in eligible voters in Leichhardt, too.

On Thursday, the Australian Electoral Commission reported

the Leichhardt electorate had 117,284 registered voters, up 21,339.

An AEC spokesperson said last Monday was a record day for enrolments in the country’s history.

New Cooktown Hospital appears to be done deal

WET weather might have deterred some locals but Torres and Cape Hospital and Health chief executive Bev Hamerton was please with the turnout of Cooktown locals at Thursday’s hospital redevelopment forum.

“I think if it was a sunny day we might have had a few more people out and about that would have popped in but I think we got a good cross-section of the community,” she said.

Held at the Sovereign Resort over an eight-hour period, the walk-in forum allowed locals to get an update on plans for the new hospital, as well as provide feedback.

“About half of those attended left comments,” Ms Hamerton said.

“It gave us an opportunity for a fresh set of eyes to take another look at what we have planned, which is important as sometimes we look at things with our own opinions and biases.”

Building a new Cooktown Hospital appears to be a slam dunk, although the project has yet to be officially funded by the state government.

Ms Hamerton said locals should expect that announcement at a later date.

Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service will make its next submission to Queensland Health soon and a finalised submission later in the year.

“I think Cooktown residents are much more confident that it’s happening now,” Ms Hamerton said.

The CEO also assured locals that existing services wouldn’t be impacted when construction begins.

“It’s not a greenfield project but we’ll create a temporary facility so that when we have to shut down emergency, for example, we have another building ready to go to move into in the interim,” Ms Hamerton said.

“I wouldn’t expect services to be impacted by more than a few days.”

Partnership will help protect reef

CAPE York Water Partnership last week launched an $8.5 million water quality program in Cooktown.

In a new initiative funded by the federal government’s Reef Trust and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation, four Cape York land management organisations will undertake land-based work to minimise erosion and sediment run-off to Great Barrier Reef waterways.

Coordinated by CYWP, the eight projects cover 631,000 ha of eastern Cape York in the coastal catchments of the Annan, Endeavour, McIvor, Starke, Jeannie, Howick, Wakooka and Muck rivers.

The projects, which address key threats to water quality in eastern Cape York including erosion from fire, roads, tracks and gullies, will be delivered by Yuku Baja Muliku, South Endeavour Trust, South Cape York Catchments and Cape York Water Partnership.

Cape York Water Partnership program director Christina Howley said receiving funding for the Eastern Cape York Water Quality Program recognised many years of research and advocacy from eastern Cape York land managers and provided significant opportunities for local organisations to address the key threats to water quality.

“The rivers, wetlands and marine ecosystems in eastern Cape York are in relatively good condition compared to more heavily

“However, there are serious impacts from erosion that will continue to degrade these aquatic ecosystems if they are not addressed.

“We are excited to work together with local landholders, land managers, Traditional Owners, conservation groups and councils to find the best ways to reduce existing road and gully erosion and stop creating more erosion through poor management practices.”

Great Barrier Reef Foundation managing director Anna Marsden said the Great Barrier Reef was an irreplaceable ecosystem, but poor water quality from land run-off was a threat to its health.

“This water quality improvement program is the first major investment of its kind for the eastern Cape York region, bringing to-

gether and building on many years of effort by Traditional Owners, councils, landholders, local scientists and conservation groups to foster healthy land and water to benefit our Great Barrier Reef,” Ms Marsden said.

“We’re proud to partner with Cape York Water Partnership, South Cape York Catchments, South Endeavour Trust and Yuku Baja Muliku in launching these new projects.

“By working together to improve the health of the water flowing from the Cape York region to our reef, we’re not only improving conditions for the reef’s precious corals, but we’re also saving our endangered turtles and dugongs that feed on the seagrass beds that need clean water to thrive.”

The program runs until 2024.

BEL sponsors NPA ANZAC Day activity in support of veterans Bamaga Enterprises Ltd sponsored the tradi�onal NPA ANZAC Day Gunners Breakfast, which followed the dawn service on 25 April.

Around 60 community members take part in the cooked breakfast at Cape York Peninsula Lodge annually, which includes the tradi�onal milk and rum.

The day’s events commemorate those who fought on the ba�le lines

and sacrificed their lives for the freedom we have today, including veterans living here in our Bamaga community.

BEL Chairperson, Robert Poipoi, said the breakfast is a good way to support the community in recognising and remembering our brave veterans and exservicemen.

“BEL is proud to support this commemora�ve event for Bamaga and

the NPA, especially for the long list of families with fallen veterans that served in WWII and are men�oned on the memorial,” he said.

Following breakfast, there was a march to the War Memorial at ANZAC Park in Bamaga to lay wreaths and pay respects. The day’s events came to a close with a light lunch at Bamaga Tavern. Lest we forget.

Late rain creates chaos in region TRAVEL plans went out the window for many Cape York residents last week as heavy rain lashed the Far North.

Rivers and creeks became impassable for motorists, especially in the Cooktown area, while the main rivers coursing through the northern Cape were also in flood.

The Archer River blocked traffic between Weipa and Coen, while the Wenlock River at Moreton Telegraph Station also cut off the NPA with southern communities.

Boarding school students were also hit by the bad weather, with many Torres Strait students stranded at Horn Island Airport.

The students had taken smaller aircraft to arrive at Horn, only for their flights to Cairns to be cancelled.

It forced schools and locals on the ground at Horn to scramble and make sure the students had beds to sleep in.

Three families visiting Portland Roads had to get food helicoptered in from Archer River after they got stuck between the Wenlock and Pascoe Rivers.

While the late rain created chaos, for many it was a blessing as some rain gauges on the east coast had struggled for their average wet season quota.

Lockhart River was one of the big winners. It had been the driest community on the Cape until massive downpours late last week and on the weekend.

The Wallaby Creek Bridge is supposed to be in this picture.

When the Peninsula Developmental Road re-opens remains to be seen. Road crews had begun grading the road and had reached Musgrave Roadhouse.

There is hope that the rain clears and the road’s post-wet season maintenance grade can be completed within a fortnight.

The Western Cape Eco Tours boat has been given a facelift ahead of the 2022 tourist season.

Tourist season delayed til May MASSIVE amounts of tourists are tipped to flock to Cape York this year but there are fears that some bookings may have to be cancelled due to the prolonged wet season.

Most operators based north of Laura bank on May 1 as the opening of the season and any business they get earlier is considered a bonus.

But if river levels don’t drop and the road isn’t graded quickly, it could lead to a loss of income for many businesses.

It’s not just the tourism operators that rely on visitor numbers. Cape York’s roadhouses and retail sector also need the influx of customers to make ends meet.

In Weipa, Western Cape Eco Tours will likely kick off the season on May 13.

Sporting a brand new wrap on their boat,

booking numbers are strong for 2022, said Gemma Shaw, who runs the business with her partner Malcolm Slack.

“The season is looking really good, especially if the road is opened soon,” she said.

Weipa Mine and Town Tours is also in the same situation.

Hardus van Wyk and Megan Hall haven’t taken bookings until May 13 and are hoping the roads open up in time.

“There is a really big demand this year and we are telling tourists to make sure they book their tours in advance to avoid missing out,” Megan said.

“A lot of people will arrive in Weipa and think they can book a tour and we’ll do our best to help them, but often we don’t have any spare seats.”

Anzac Day 2022

“We felt we had a responsibility” Raised in rural Victoria before heading off to war, LES COOK hasn’t even visited Cape York, let alone lived here. So why is his story relevant to readers?

The truth is that his story is relevant to every Australian.

The 99-year-old sat down with Cape York Weekly editor MATT NICHOLLS in February to share his story ...

W

E could all learn a thing or two from humble war hero Les Cook.

The top-shelf gardener, proud dad and gym regular is still living his best life in a quiet suburb near the Canberra Hospital.

Earlier this year I found myself in the nation’s capital at the historic Australian War Memorial and had a lightbulb moment – for Anzac Day this year I should write a piece on a World War II veteran.

So I did some research, made a few calls and emails and stumbled upon Les. The interview was set up by his wonderful daughter Debbie and my partner Emily and I lobbed up to his house on a sunny morning in early February.

I remember thinking as I drove to his house how hard it would be to interview a man who had lived such a long and meaningful life.

For a 99-year-old, Les was full of beans and we sat in his backyard drinking coffee, chewing the fat and discussing some of his vivid memories from wartime.

The only instruction I was given

by Debbie was not to try and upset

him – a TV crew had interviewed Les a few years earlier and pushed him to exhaustion trying to get him to be emotional on camera.

For me, that was an easy request as I didn’t want to talk to him about the worst of the war.

I was eager to learn about how life had changed for Les and his mates when he came home and what Australia was like in the postwar era.

We got sidetracked a few times but I walked away in awe.

FAMILY DUTY THE first thing you need to know about Les Cook’s war experience is that he didn’t have to serve.

He was 17 when he enlisted in May 1940 and you had to be at least 20 or 21 at the time.

His father Ernest, who served in the First World War, also lied about his age, telling recruiters he was several years younger so he could enlist again.

“You could have said your name was Ned Kelly,” said Les. “You didn’t need any evidence.

We both enlisted under our own names and I’ve always thought that mum could’ve rung up and had us kicked out, but she knew we would’ve just gone and enlisted under a different name.

“We felt that we had a responsibility to support the stand.”

Les’ father actually served for two armies. He was first in the British Expeditionary Force and joined the Australian Imperial Force for World War II. “I was born in England and my second birthday was on the boat (to Australia),” Les said.

He was 16 years old when he first tried to enlist after the war broke out in 1939.

“I think they said ‘go and try the boy scouts’,” Les recalled.

Anzac Day 2022

Live life like Les: Why all Aussies From – Page 9 It wasn’t until after the battle of Dunkirk that he was finally successful in joining the army.

“It was the thing to do in our generation,” he said.

“I remember when I left work, the head of the organisation talked of courage, and I remember saying at the time, it would have taken more courage for me not to have enlisted.”

DEPLOYMENT IF circumstances were different, Les would have a passport to be envious of.

He shipped off to North Africa and did stints in Greece, Crete and Syria. He came back to Australia for six months before his unit was sent to New Guinea to try and stop the Japanese advance on Port Moresby.

Having survived that and a trip to Borneo – as well as a second bout of malaria – Les didn’t stop serving when the war was declared over in 1945.

“People ask me,

‘What did you do in the war?’ and I tell them, ‘I walked among kings’.

He volunteered to go to Japan in a peacekeeping-type role and was discharged from the army in 1947.

Ask those who know him and they’ll say Les was a fine soldier who served his country with pride.

But ask Les and he’ll play down his role, shouldering arms to any questions that paint him as a hero.

“It’s embarrassing to be held up as something that you’re not,” he said.

“As one man said, we weren’t soldiers, we were heavily-armed civilians – and I liked that definition – because that’s what we were.

“We were just ordinary people.

heroic and some who were extraordinary, but for the most part, we were just ordinary people, and, just like in life today, some of us were just making up the numbers.”

While Les believes Anzac Day is an important day and attends services with pride, he doesn’t believe he deserves special praise.

“When I go to these services, I think, ‘They’re talking about you’,” he said.

“We were just the generation that happened to be alive at the time. People ask me, ‘What did you do in the war?’ and I tell them, ‘I walked among kings’.”

As we sat in the sun on a mild Canberra morning, I told Les the story of my grandfather’s uncle, the late Corporal Tom Fletcher who signed up to be a medic in the same war because he wanted to serve but didn’t want to kill.

Tom served alongside the inspirational Corporal John Metson, who crawled in agony down the Kokoda Track for three weeks after he was shot in the ankle.

Metson refused to be stretchered because he didn’t want his mates to carry him, so he bandaged up his hands and knees and crawled through the jungle.

My grandfather’s uncle was left in a New Guinea village to look after the wounded men while those who were fit enough pushed on for reinforcements.

Before help arrived they were discovered by the Japanese forces.

Unarmed, they were brutally killed then and there.

“That story will tell you more about the war than I ever could,” said Les, who has written about Metson and his crew and speaks

“In Borneo, we were cut off for three days and two nights and we didn’t get much sleep,” he said.

“There were two blokes in a shell hole that was half full of water. One of the blokes went to sleep and his steel helmet pushed his head under the water.

“The other bloke heard him breathing bubbles under the water and pulled his head up.

“Another time a bullet came past an officer’s head.

“The officer turned around and yelled out: ‘Look out where you’re firing, you nearly hit me.’

“And the bloke said to him: ‘There were two Japs the other side of the tree you were behind, and I’ve just shot one of them.’”

could learn from humble veteran BEFORE AND AFTER LIFE was certainly no picnic for a young Les Cook.

He grew up on a dairy farm in the Gippsland region in south-east Victoria and had a rifle in his hands when he was seven.

Two years of secondary school was all that was required before he landed a job with the railways.

“You got an extra sixpence a day if you learnt Morse code so I did,” he said as he talked about how he started as a signaller for the army when he first enlisted.

“That wasn’t what I signed up for and later I was carrying an antitank rifle and in Syria, I carried the Bren gun, the anti-aircraft machine gun.”

When he returned from Japan in 1947, he caught the train from Sydney to Melbourne to make a new home for himself after seven years of service.

He signed up single but had an inkling he had someone special waiting for him in Melbourne.

Les first saw Betty on the train in a rare stint back in Australia between his Middle East tour and his pending New Guinea mission.

He had been in hospital and was preparing to be permanently discharged when he spotted Betty on the Hampton line.

“He didn’t have the courage to talk to her on the first day but thought if he was on the same train the following day he might have a chance to see her,” said daughter Deb, who made sure her father didn’t leave out any good bits.

As Les recalled: “She lived in the same suburb (Hampton) and I walked her home.

“We talked for about an hour and exchanged details.

“When I went (to New Guinea) we hadn’t even held hands. But she’d write to me and we wrote for about three years.”

He recalls telephoning Betty when arriving in Melbourne.

“I would have still been in my uniform because I didn’t have any other clothes,” he said.

ried the following year and had their honeymoon in Cairns.

They went on to raise three daughters – Annette, Judy and Debbie and spent most of their life in Canberra.

“I was offered my old job back at the railway but I wanted a job

that kept me outdoors,” Les said.

He took up carpentry but as the nation struggled in the post-war era, he decided that a government job would be best for raising a family.

He accepted a position with the Commonwealth in Melbourne

and later transferred to Canberra, working in geoscience.

Every day he would return home for lunch to be with Betty, who was a homemaker without a network in the capital.

“We had a happy marriage. We were friends as well as lovers,” he

said with a tremble in his voice.

He looked after his wife until the end.

EYEING A CENTURY YOU can’t help but admire Les’ attitude towards life.

His house is tidy, his garden full of fruit and vegetables and his zest for living is steadfast.

“I still go to the gym, you know,” he beamed at me, probably hinting that I should be taking a leaf out of his book (he’s right).

“For my 99th birthday the gym gave me a life membership!

“I’m hoping I can get a bit out of them.”

Les will turn 100 on January 10 next year, although his service record says he has already hit the milestone.

He hopes Queen Elizabeth II will still be alive to write him a letter for his birthday.

“For the 75th anniversary there were eight of us sent up to New Guinea and Prince Charles and Camilla were staying in the same hotel,” Les said.

“Camilla came and talked to us for about an hour, but Charles is ... different.

“If I make it to 100 I hope the Queen is still there.”

ANZAC DAY WHILE Les believes the days of him and his World War II mates are numbered at Anzac Day ceremonies, he isn’t worried that the commemorations will drop off in the future.

“The young people are showing so much interest in it. They don’t need any push to do so,” he said.

“It’s a very significant day.

There’s no doubt about that.”

In a piece he wrote not too long ago, Les penned: “When you stand in silent remembrance on Anzac Day, or when you stand before a cenotaph or at the gates of a war cemetery and read the words, ‘Their name liveth for evermore’, think of John Metson; of his fortitude, his determination not to be a burden to others, and his cheerful acceptance of the awful situation into which he had been thrust.”

to Give graziers more time to Council implement muster stray cattle: KAP new values KATTER’S Australian Party has called on the state government to improve its cattle-handling procedures when it comes to national parks.

Member for Hill Shane Knuth said Queensland Parks and Wildlife officers had been performing shoot-to-kill operations in Cape York, indiscriminately killing unbranded and branded cattle.

The state MP said the kills were often happening without any, or little notice to surrounding landowners who own most of the cattle.

“The department needs to communicate with landowners, who are rarely notified and often held up by government bureaucracy, sometimes waiting up to 50 days before they can obtain a permit to collect their branded cattle from national parks,” Mr Knuth said.

“Cattle are continually shot before landowners are given permission to enter parks to muster their cattle, which is a huge economic loss to the region.”

He claimed that over the past three years more than 5000 cattle, which could be worth more than $6 million on today’s market, had been shot on orders from the Department of Environment.

Mr Knuth said: “The question is, why are neighbouring properties to Cape York national parks

given only one week’s notice, or no notice, before the killing of cattle occurs?

“And when adequate notice is given, it’s always during the wet season when it is far too difficult and dangerous to muster cattle.

“It is quite obvious that this government wants to drive pastoralists out of the region, so they can lock it up to meet their environmental agenda.

“I call on the minister to fix this long-standing issue, streamline the permit process, instruct the department to give adequate notice and work with landowners to muster valuable cattle.”

Sally Witherspoon, who runs cattle on a northern Peninsula sublease, said the QPWS was putting the final nail in the coffin of the beef industry in Cape York.

“There is a ridiculous rule that you must contact QPWS 40 days before submitting a Permit to Muster application,” she said.

“The application takes time to be assessed and could then be denied for some reason. For example, too late in the season for a muster.

“National parks should not be purchased unless there are funds to fully fence and maintain the park.

“They are the worst neighbours one could wish for with little to no

weed control, no fences, nobody living on the property, little firefighting capability, and a propensity to shoot cattle.

“Shooting from a helicopter is often not humane and it is distressing to think our cattle are being cruelly ‘hunted’ and maybe left to die a slow death.

“It is very telling that graziers on Cape York Peninsula and the north-eastern coast of Queensland are being forced out of business in the only areas of Queensland that have guaranteed rainfall.

“It is my belief that this is part of a state government drive to disrupt food production.”

AURUKUN Shire Council is reviewing its policies and procedures to ensure the Wik Kath Min (The Good Story) Community Values Statement is embedded within the local government framework.

Mayor Keri Tamwoy said the Values Statement was a clear vision of what the community wanted to help Aurukun move forward to a better future.

“More than 300 members of our community contributed to this statement which was launched towards the end of 2019,” she said.

“With the pandemic becoming less of a focus for council it is time to move forward with the Values Statement and ensure this vision is at the forefront of government and the community working together.”

Mackerel need protection from anglers, politicians

THE piece “Mackerel stats are fishy” in last week’s Cape York Weekly quoting Robbie Katter and Daniel McCarthy contains misleading information that only serves to distract attention away from critical problems in both Queensland’s east coast and Gulf of Carpentaria fisheries.

As a member of the Gulf Fisheries Working Group, and longterm recreational fishing advocate and charter fisher (landed my first Spanish mackerel in 1971), I feel adequately qualified to comment on some of the sensationalist inferences contained in their statements.

While anti-fishing groups have long been opposed to recreational fishing, to claim they have colluded in a major way to “slash Spanish mackerel quotas” is a fabrication.

Seeking to lay the blame for the depletion of Spanish mackerel stocks solely on Labor is another furphy as exceptionally poor fisheries management under BOTH major parties essentially created the current situation.

Mr Katter’s statement about importing Spanish mackerel from Indonesia is based upon Mr McCarthy’s much reported hyperbole suggesting that Indonesian Spanish mackerel originate from the same stocks as our eastern coast.

He only has to read the Fisheries Queensland assessment document to find that this is completely incorrect.

In fact, Gulf of Carpentaria Spanish mackerel are also a totally separate stock to their east coast counterparts, that have a range from northern NSW to PNG. The low east coast Spanish mackerel stocks have resulted purely as a result of years of poor Queensland Fisheries management, that has allowed overfishing of the resource – end of story!

The Indonesian inference is completely without substance.

Now for some REAL facts!

East coast Spanish stocks have been assessed using the latest techniques, and are estimated at approximately 17 per cent of the original number.

errors, those numbers are still way below the established biological level for sustainability of 40 per cent and under the critical level of 20 per cent.

This has not happened overnight. In fact, a 2012 East Coast Spanish Mackerel Stock Assessment on page 27 of the Great Barrier Reef Outlook Report 2014 concludes that “the stock status of Spanish mackerel could be approaching overfished”.

So it’s clear that both LNP and Labor governments have failed to address this particular problem for over a decade.

Commercial and recreational fishers have been quick to question the assessment data, most of them without reading the report.

fact that our Spanish mackerel are in serious trouble and this requires the instigation of urgent management measures to halt the decline and rehabilitate stocks.

No matter how the issue is twisted, this remains the crux of the matter.

Spanish mackerel are a schooling fish and therefore susceptible to hyper stability.

Very simply, this means that whether at a level of 100 or 20 individuals, it is still possible to catch, say five fish when they begin to feed, with the result that fishers don’t really notice the impact they are having on the population, as they see their catches as stable.

This is a phenomenon that has been scientifically recorded worldwide, in some cases only after sup-

posedly healthy stocks suddenly collapsed.

It’s vitally important that conspiracy theories and half-truths are not allowed to distract from the problems our fishery currently faces.

The sooner measures are put into place to rehabilitate fish stocks, the quicker they will recover.

If you want your kids to still be able to catch Spanish mackerel in the future, it’s urgent that we allow Fisheries Queensland to act immediately!

Struggling miner eyes new loan

THE small Cape York bauxite operator Metro Mining has reestablished and drawn down a short term bridging loan.

The $5 million loan is based on the same terms as available in January 2022 with Greenstone Resources and Lambhill.

The loan was drawn up but not taken up at the time.

Metro Mining said it decided to re-establish the loan because of the Ukraine conflict and its impacts on fuel prices, freight rate volatility, strengthening Australian dollar and continuing COVID-19 impacts.

The unsecured loan has a term of six months at a rate of 14 per cent.

Metro Mining CEO Simon Wensley said: “After having finished the 2021 production season in February 2022 and generating the cash required to optimally maintain through the wet season as a result of unforeseen external uncertainties, Metro has requested the re-instatement of the bridge with Greenstone and Lambhill to assist in managing working capital.”

Big change to COVID conditions

QUEENSLAND’S quarantine requirements will be eased for asymptomatic close contacts of those with COVID-19.

Health Minister Yvette D’Ath said the lifting of quarantine requirements only applied to people who are asymptomatic and test negative for COVID-19.

“If you have symptoms, you must stay at home,” she said.

“We are moving from a situation where these measures are controlled by public health directives and now leaving it to individuals and employers to look at these for workplace health and safety measures in vulnerable settings.

“Of course, we still encourage people who can work from home, who are close contacts, to do so over those seven days.”

Positive steps taken to shore up future of footy

IN the north we love a challenge.

And one of the biggest challenges we’ve faced in recent years stems from our annual and beloved Foley Shield.

This carnival used to be the pinnacle of rugby league in our fine corner of the state – teams from all over the north took part, including Whitsundays, Ayr, Babinda and Mount Isa. But today just three teams remain fighting it out for the prestigious shield: Townsville, Mackay and Cairns.

There’s no denying it’s not the same carnival it was 30 or 40 years ago.

But that doesn’t mean it is any less of a competition.

Many have told us we wouldn’t be able to keep it going, but here we are, back for another year and ready to only get stronger when it all kicks off again on Friday.

It always makes it easier when the leagues are in support of the Foley Shield concept and they get right behind us.

This year we have seen all

of the leagues assemble some really strong sides and looking across those teams, I can guarantee there will be quality games.

And, in a rugby league first, we’re also playing the Foley Shield in conjunction with the North Queensland Games, which is an exciting partnership.

It’s wonderful to see that while Foley Shield has a huge history, and through keeping the Foley Shield going and alive, it enables our current and future players to learn about that history.

All three leagues this year are talking to their teams about the history of the Foley Shield and who represented their regions and how the game was portrayed as the flagship of representative footy.

But what we’re also trying to ensure is that while we recognise and celebrate that past, we do evolve moving forward.

The region’s vison for the Foley Shield beyond 2022 is to re-engage Mount Isa/Mid North into the Foley Shield and to have the Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula area represented into the future.

That’s step one.

Another vision is around the women’s game and how to continue their involvement in the Foley Shield carnival.

While we don’t know what that future might look like yet – with the chance of a North Queensland Cowboys NRLW team and possible additional northern feeder teams to come – you can be assured that where there is something on offer for our males up here, there is something on offer for our female counterparts.

We live by our beliefs, about being inclusive, and that’s one thing that inspires me most about our people in the north – they’re about embracing each and everyone one of us, no matter what.

And it’s something we see not just with our senior footy, but our junior footy as well.

All of our junior competitions have kicked off now – from Weipa to Mount Isa to our Cooktown juniors.

It’s really exciting to see it all up and running and the way inclusivity is growing through those areas.

One example is our Cooktown competition.

The Bloomfield River State School have this year entered a team into the comp because their principal – who is a rugby league tragic – wants to offer the opportunity to all kids to play footy every fortnight.

The efforts that people, teachers and volunteers go to around the regions to provide opportunities for kids to play our great game is so inspiring.

They’re doing it out of their own time, but it keeps rugby league going.

Cooktown is also thriving at the moment with the arrival of the Roads to Regions tour last week.

Our NRL game development team were in Cooktown and surrounds, delivering educational programs and clinics to help support our regional areas and give them access to our “heroes” of the game.

We had Tahlulah Tillett, Gavin Cooper, Trent Hodkinson and Mitch Allgood there and I have no doubt the community was buzzing with rugby league excitement.

Nate intimidates

BAMAGA big man Nate Jawai might be entering his twilight years on the basketball court but he still frightens opponents.

Low handicappers chase Weipa Open AROUND 70 players from across Queensland will take to the Carpentaria Golf Club on the weekend for the annual Goodline Weipa Open.

Club captain Jamie Hutton said nominations had been strong for the Cape’s biggest golf event but hoped wet weather would stay away this week to allow some visitors to drive up for the two-day tournament.

“We are going to create a stand-by list so if anyone still wants to nominate they should because I think we might lose a few players due to the road conditions,” he said.

“As it stands, the nominations for the men’s events are terrific, with some really good A-

graders and decent field sizes for both A-grade and B-grade.

“There aren’t as many C-grade men as previous years and the women’s divisions are also down on numbers.”

Reigning champion Warren Brewer will be out to defend his crown but will have some hot competition, Hutton said.

PATTY Mills has been named the winner of the 2021-22 NBA Sportsmanship Award and will receive the Joe Dumars Trophy which honours a player who best represents the ideals of sportsmanship on the court.

Mills, who is currently playing for the Brooklyn Nets in the NBA playoffs, was last week presented with a special edition 75th Anniversary commemorative trophy in recognition of the honour.

“I think it was a cool moment at practice today,” said Mills.

“You just go about your day-today business I guess and be who you are.

“But the recognition is cool. I think the coolest thing about it is it’s your peers, your teammates, the players that you play against, who vote and knowing that is pretty cool.

“It’s a credit to my family and my parents, my upbringing, my culture specifically, and all the values that I have been taught growing up and now in a position to be able to inspire others to love the game, respect the game, and go about it in a manner that is respectful, so yeah, it’s cool.”

Earlier this season, Mills received The Don Award, Australian sports’ highest honour, after leading the country’s men’s national basketball team to its first Olympic medal, with a bronze medal finish in Tokyo.

Mills, representing his country in his fourth Olympics, scored 42 points in the 103-97 win over Slovenia that clinched the medal.

At the start of the Olympics, Mills became the first Indigenous member to carry the Australian flag at the opening ceremony.
