POT holes and cracks litter the surface and pictures from above highlight the dozens of patch-up jobs made over the years.

With the tourist season fast approaching, Weipa locals say they are fed up with the quality of the car park at the Heritage Shopping Centre, which houses the town’s only supermarket.

“Do a story on that would you,” said one reader, remarking on the loud bang one car made as the driver misjudged the size of a pot hole.

“How much money gets spent at this place every week only for it to look like this?

“It’s disgraceful.”

Last year, Cape York Weekly wrote about abandoned cars in the township and highlighted this green sedan, which still sits idle in the car park of the Heritage Shopping Centre.

Rio Tinto and Weipa Town Authority can’t remove the vehicle as it is on private property.

Instead, it is parked near the entrance to the centre.

“Imagine coming to Weipa for the first time and seeing some of the stuff we throw up,” a reader said.

“You fly into this open-air terminal with a tin roof, then you get out of the airport and there is water gushing down the gutters because another leak has emerged.

“Then you drive to Evans

Landing and the most beautiful block of land has a dog pound on it – not to mention the state of the intersection there.

“When you finally get to the main business centre you have this crappy car park with that

green car still sitting there gathering dust.

“It’ll be heritage-listed soon.”

Cape York Weekly contacted the Heritage Shopping Centre for comment but did not receive a response.

Weipa Town Authority chair Michael Rowland said he hoped it would be moved by the owners.

“We don’t have the power to remove it but we’ll happily let them know about the process, which is fairly simple.”

RIDING through the bush or along the beach on your quad bike is a favourite Cape York pastime but police say reckless behaviour has forced their hand to start cracking down on riders.

“Weipa police continue to receive calls from concerned community members reporting quad bikes being ridden in an unsafe manner, often on the road,” Senior Sergeant Warren Flegg said.

“Often they have multiple passengers on board, including young children, with the rider and passengers usually not wearing helmets.

“We understand that quad bikes and buggies are fun and that they may appear to be a convenient choice for transport around town, especially on a Friday or Saturday night, but the fun quickly wears off when you are faced with $3000 worth of fines, loss of licence, loss of employment, serious injury or death.”

Senior Sergeant Flegg said that when intercepted by police, the majority of quad bike riders are breaking the law in some capacity with helmet offences the most prevalent.

“The fine for not wearing a helmet on a quad bike whether you are the driver or passenger, will now cost you $413 and three demerit points.

“If you commit the same offence within a 12-month period, double demerit points apply.”

Police said the majority of quad and off-road vehicle crashes involved alcohol and occurred late at night.

Recently, a 23-year old man was dealt with by police following an off-road vehicle rollover on Andoom Road.

When questioned if alcohol had a part to play in his decision making, he replied, “no doubt about it!”

Tim West the officer in charge of the Queensland Ambulance Service in Weipa said: “Serious injuries can occur when quad bike riders and passengers are involved in crashes.

Riding quad bikes in the bush and on the beach is a Cape York favourite, but police say they will throw the book at riders and passengers doing the wrong thing after a spate of incidents in the region.

“Injuries can range from simple musculoskeletal injuries to serious and life-threatening injuries, such as head injuries that can result in death.

“The Queensland Ambulance Service responds to four serious motorcycle and quad-related incidents each year in Weipa.”

Mr West also reminded Cape York residents about the importance of calling Triple Zero (000) in the event of an accident.

“Transporting a patient in the back of car can sometimes worsen a person’s injuries,” he said.

Senior Sergeant Flegg said quad bike riders were unable to utilise Queensland roads or road-related areas unless the vehicle was subject to the conditional registration scheme.

“If you decide to ride a quad

bike or an off-road vehicle on a road or road-related area, you are committing the same offence as driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle,” he said.

“Penalties for these offences range from fines of $385 to forfeiture of the quad or off-road vehicle for repeat offenders.”

Since the beginning of 2021, 13 people have lost their lives in quad bike-related accidents in Australia.

Eight of these fatalities were the result of a rollover and, in the majority of cases, the rider was not wearing a helmet.

“For me, one of the most challenging parts of my job as police officer is delivering a message that someone has suffered serious injury in a traffic crash,” Senior Sergeant Flegg said.

“The reality is that at some point if attitudes do not change, we are going to end up with another fatality.

“These laws are in place to keep the community safe. It is crucial that people wear helmets and do not let children ride adult quad bikes.

“They do not possess the relevant skills to operate motor vehicles without adult supervision.”

Senior Sergeant Flegg said the Weipa police unit was getting ready to ramp up high-visibility operations leading into Easter and the school holidays.

“We will take a no-tolerance approach to riders and passengers doing the wrong thing on quad bikes and off-road vehicles.”

Popular bridge closed to locals A POPULAR access bridge in Cape York has been closed to the public due to safety concerns.

Cook Shire Council said it had reluctantly closed the much-loved swing bridge at Marton until the deteriorating approach ramps could be replaced.

“Community safety is our number one priority,” mayor Peter Scott said.

“The bridge itself is structurally sound, however the timber approach ramps on either side have been damaged by significant white ant infestation over the years.”

Constructed more than 25 years ago, the picturesque walk-bridge hangs amongst the mangroves over a tributary that flows into the Endeavour River.

The bridge also provides a crucial connection into town for residents living along Railway Avenue and beyond when the Minke River and Poison Creek crossings overflow.

“The significant cost of maintenance and repairs to council-owned infrastructure and assets is a considerable burden on council’s operational budget,” Cr Scott said.

“We recognise that the bridge is an important connection for community members living in the area, and will prioritise securing suitable funding to repair the approaches, until then we are faced with no other option, except to close the bridge.”

Peter Tonkes, director of infrastructure for Cook Shire Council, said that as soon as the funds could be secured, the plan will be to replace the ramps with resilient materials, similar to those used at the Cooktown wharf.

REGIONAL ARTS GRANTS The swing bridge at Marton has been closed.

RADIO BLACKOUT A RADIO tower at Ayton, south of Cooktown, has been turned off due to it interfering with aviation communications.

“Recent testing of the Ayton radio tower has confirmed that broadcast transmissions from the tower are interfering with emergency aviation communication channels,” a Cook Shire Council spokesperson said.

“As such, Air Services Australia have requested that all transmissions be suspended until the problem can be rectified.

“The radio tower will be offline and all broadcasts will be suspended until further notice. We thank you for your understanding and apologise for any inconvenience this might cause.”

Will the doors ever open? Future Described as a palace for the cats and dogs of Weipa, this multi-million dollar vet clinic and animal welfare centre was meant to be a game-changer for Cape York. However, it sits unfinished and unoccupied.

MATT NICHOLLS looks at what the problem is and what the future looks like for this purpose-built facility ...

T

HERE is no single reason why this mega project sits empty on the outskirts of Weipa’s industrial area.

A mixture of mismanagement, personal circumstances, outside influences and a budget blowout have all contributed to the downfall of this facility.

Good people with good intentions are heavily involved with the project, which makes it such a sensitive subject in a small community.

But the harsh reality is that this project was largely paid for by the taxpayer and the people of Weipa through the Cape Animal Protection Shelter, best known as CAPS. But before diving into the problem, it’s worth going back to the beginning.

Creating a purpose-built animal welfare centre was the dream of Tonia May, a founder of CAPS and its long-serving president.

For years she toiled away at raising funds to support animal welfare in the community, as well as building the organisation’s reputation in the region.

It was tireless and often thankless work, although she was duly awarded Weipa’s Citizen of the Year honour in 2020.

This was on the back of the promise of federal funding to build her dream – a vet clinic and animal welfare facility to service not just the pets of Weipa, but those of the surrounding communities of Mapoon, Napranum and Aurukun.

In March 2019, the federal government awarded $1.5 million to CAPS for the project, which would be supported by in-kind donations from the likes of Goodline, Rio Tinto and other local organisations.

But in the two years since, the

Hopes were high in October 2020 as construction of the facility took shape.

project has de-railed. The exterior of the buildings are complete, but the insides are unfinished, while there has yet to be an animal treated or kennelled at the site.

THE FACILITY A RANGE of buildings on the Evans Landing site should provide an array of services.

There is the vet clinic, which is self-explanatory.

CAPS has constructed an administrative building for its volunteer base, which could also be used by other non-profits, while out the back is a boarding kennel for dogs.

There is also an air-conditioned building to be used as a cattery.

On the right-hand side is a cot-

tage, built as a residence for the vet or an on-site caretaker.

The cottage is currently occupied by a couple who are looking after the site.

There is also a small paddock for livestock should they need vet care, while a shed has been built to house a crematorium for pets.

It is an amazing place.

The problem for CAPS is that it can’t get a vet to move in and it has yet to start up the boarding kennel business, which would provide the charity with much-needed income.

LEADERSHIP VOID CAPS has been rocked by several changes of leadership in the past 18 months, with a fourth president

set to be elected soon. A major family issue forced Tonia May to take a back seat and she has since left Weipa.

The reins were handed to longtime CAPS foster carer Karen Ogilvie, who also left town due to personal reasons.

The next president to be elected was Julia Dodd, who has since left town to take up work in Gladstone.

Ms Dodd is still technically the CAPS president and will be replaced at the next AGM. Cape York Weekly rang her for an update on the facility, only to be told “no comment” and was promptly disconnected.

Ms May was also contacted for her opinion on the progress of the facility, however she did not respond to phone calls or messages.

VET STAND-OFF ONE reason why there is no vet occupying the facility is the lack of cooperation with the existing Weipa-based veterinarian business.

For years, CAPS had lambasted Tableland Veterinary Service for not providing a full-time clinic.

That has since changed, with a full-time vet now living in Weipa, but it meant CAPS tried to find an alternative vet to fill the new clinic,

either competing with Tableland Veterinary Service or forcing them out of town.

Cape York Weekly understands CAPS had its heart set on Annabelle Olsson from Boongarry Veterinary Services in Cairns.

But that fell over when pressure was put on CAPS to put the vet clinic out to tender.

“Everyone came in with the best of intentions but the whole thing has been managed poorly,” said Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch, who fought to get the federal funding for the facility.

“There was one person running the show and then she left. She was doing everything she could to exclude Tableland Vets from the process.

“That wasn’t appropriate as the funds were not given so they could compete with an existing service.

“I’m not trying to have a go at Tonia because she did a great job over a long period of time, but it was clear that she didn’t want the existing vet in town to be a part of the new facility.”

Mr Entsch said he drove past the CAPS facility each time he visited Weipa and will again drop in this week when in town.

of animal welfare centre unclear “It breaks my heart to see it sitting empty,” the MP said.

“They have built a palace. It’s just too big at the moment with no vet there.

“They need to carve it up a bit and get someone else in to use the space.”

Weipa Town Authority chair Michael Rowland said there had been a number of failings in the process to construct the facility and find a suitable tenant to run the vet clinic.

“This was built without a business plan, without a vet to come in and run it and without a long-term strategy,” he said.

“It’s very disappointing that all this effort has been put in to build a great facility for Weipa but it is not being utilised.”

Mr Rowland was on a panel of six independent people as part of the tender process to determine who the vet should be.

Others on the selection panel included Catherine Kennedy from Goodline and Rio Tinto’s Fiona Kruger.

Sources told Cape York Weekly that the tender process was flawed with an obvious bias against Tableland Veterinary Service.

Mr Rowland would not comment about the actual process due to confidentiality.

However, the WTA chairman said with no vet service signed up to use the clinic, it was time for CAPS to patch things up with the existing veterinarian business.

“There needs to be someone independent to step in and mediate an outcome,” he said.

Interestingly, the CAPS building is outside of the Weipa town boundary, meaning it is on the Rio Tinto mining lease in Cook Shire Council territory.

TABLELAND RESPONSE A BITTER taste is still left in the mouth of Tableland Veterinary Service in regards to the tender process, but the business says it is still willing to talk terms with CAPS. One problem is the changing of the goal posts. When CAPS put the vet clinic out for tender, it offered up a completed building that was fully fitted out.

finished and estimates range from $200,000 to $500,000 to complete the internals.

“We are still in discussions and trying to sort out what the new reality is,” said Tableland Veterinary Service director Mick Ruppin.

“If there can be a match we would love to be a part of it.

“There was a tender process to lease a completed building but unfortunately the building hasn’t been completed.”

A CAPS insider said it had offered Tableland Veterinary Service a three-year contract to take control of the vet clinic, but on the

proviso they pay for the fit-out.

However, that appears to put the two organisations at an impasse, especially based on the length of the deal.

“We need to go back to the drawing board to see who funds the completion of the building,” Mr Ruppin said.

It’s believed CAPS not only want Tableland Veterinary Service to pay for the fit-out but have asked for more than $50,000 a year in rent.

Mr Ruppin wouldn’t comment on figures but said he still hoped an arrangement could be struck.

“I definitely think there is a chance,” he said.

“It would be a more comfortable place to work out of than our current facility, although we have just made a big investment there.

“If the facility can be brought up to standard it could be a really nice precinct.”

THE FUTURE THE ball is in CAPS’ court and how the facility gets used will be up to the charity.

Its first priority must be to elect a Weipa-based president and then determine how it moves forward in regards to negotiating terms for

the facility. Mr Entsch said he believed that Tableland Veterinary Service was the best-placed operator for the facility, with decades of local knowledge and all the town’s pets on their books.

“I’m not privy to what CAPS is asking but this was public money that paid for the facility and it needs to be used,” he said.

“If three years is all they are offering as a lease, then that is disappointing because as a business you would want longer-term security.”

Mr Rowland said while CAPS was trying to sort out the vet clinic, the boarding kennels and cattery should be opened up.

“It would be a great source of income for CAPS, who do a lot of great work in looking after dogs and cats,” he said.

“There are so many people in town who would use the kennels as flying out your pet is expensive and finding a dog-sitter can be difficult.”

Mr Ruppin said it would be business as usual at Tableland Veterinary Service but would happily engage with CAPS if a fair deal could be agreed upon.

“We haven’t ruled anything out but we are a business,” he said.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Family Wellbeing Services are a culturally safe and free service for all First Nations families who have children under 18 living in their care.

The service covers the whole of Queensland, including the Torres Strait Islands and Cape York Peninsula.

Each year more than 2,200 families attend Family Wellbeing Services for support with parenting and family issues.

Families receive culturally safe support based on their families’ strengths and local community needs.

The services are delivered

by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community-controlled organisations and the services are available for all family members including parents, grandparents, and other kin.

Families and communities can access a range of services including parenting programs, relationship counselling, playgroups, and cultural support.

The aim is to improve the emotional and physical wellbeing of families, children, and young people.

The Queensland Government provides over $42 million per

annum in funding for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Family Wellbeing Services to better support First Nations families across the state.

One couple who have benefited from the service are Shelly and Henry*. They said that with the help of Family Wellbeing Service workers, they were able to make goals as a couple while Shelly was pregnant and access safe housing before the baby arrived.

Shelly grew up in a small remote community and had a difficult life. There were constant arguments in her family, and she struggled with drugs. Shelly found herself abusing alcohol and fighting a lot at a young age.

Faced with the choice of rehab or jail, Shelly chose rehab as she felt it would allow her to build a better life.

Shortly after meeting her partner in a rehab facility, Shelly and Henry became pregnant with their first child. While this was an exciting time for the young family, Shelly worried about what the future would hold for their baby.

While they loved each other, neither of them knew how to control their anger. Both grew

Family Wellbeing Services help First Nations families heal from past trauma

up around violence and abuse and didn’t know what a healthy relationship looked like, but they knew they wanted their baby to have a better life than they did growing up.

Shelly visited her local community health service which encouraged her to reach out to a local Family Wellbeing Service for help.

Shelly and Henry were appointed workers who helped them set individual goals as well

as goals to help them as a couple.

The workers were able to assist the young family with making a successful application for a unit and helped them furnish it for the baby’s arrival.

Shelly attended a parenting course dedicated to new Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mothers and Henry attend a men’s group and received counselling to address his anger issues.

“Our arguments were bad.

We never hit each other but we yelled and screamed at each other,” said Henry.

“We talked to the Family Wellbeing Services workers and then I went to the men’s group.

“They bought me a bike so I could get out of the house for a while to cool down. When I came back, we can talk better.

“I know not to go too long or she will worry about me.”

Family Wellbeing Services were able to connect Shelly to a local playgroup, where she met new mums and made friends.

Henry still attends the men’s group which played a vital role in helping him manage his emotions and become a better father to his new baby.

Since reaching out to the service, Shelly has the confidence to provide a safe and stable environment for her family.

Through the service, Shelly and Henry were able to get the individual support they needed in a safe, non-judgemental, and culturally sensitive way.

Diatreme rapt with new discovery

EMERGING silica sands explorer Diatreme Resources believes it has struck gold near Cooktown after announcing significant growth to its project’s resources.

Last week, the ASX-listed company said its Si2 North Project resource had recorded a significant increase of around 134 per cent to 124 million tonnes (Mt).

Located within the northern resource project of Diatreme’s Cape Bedford exploration tenement, Si2 North represents a major and additional new project to the company’s existing silica sand reserve at its Galalar project, which contains an estimated 75.5 Mt. The Galalar and Si2 North projects deliver a total resource estimated at 199.5 Mt, providing a large resource base in a stable ju-

risdiction amid increasing demand growth from Asia’s booming solar photovoltaic industry.

The expanded inferred mineral resource was estimated by independent mining engineering consultants Ausrocks.

The increased resource size im-

proves the potential for a long-term operation, delivering new jobs and investment to the local community, including local Traditional Owners, who have been offered a 12.5 per cent equity stake.

“This latest huge expansion now starts to show the enormous

scale of our silica sand resources now standing at circa 200 million tonnes across both the Galalar and Si2 North projects, which will continue to increase as we intensify our exploration efforts across multiple dune systems,” Diatreme CEO Neil McIntyre said.

“Our Galalar silica project remains our immediate development priority given its advanced stage, however having this second exceptional and growing high-grade resource will add to our project development pipeline in the medium term.

“Diatreme also has an important role to play regionally providing long-term and sustainable economic benefits for the local communities, while supporting the world’s clean energy future.”

“While there is evidence that the Gap is closing, it’s not closing fast enough for people in their 40s, 50s and 60s.”

Plant trees for the Queen ELIGIBLE groups and organisations in Cape York are invited to apply for a federal government grant to plant trees in honour Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and her seven decades of service to Australia and the Commonwealth.

The Planting Trees for The Queen’s Jubilee Program is one of a range of national and community events planned by the government to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee year.

Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch welcomed the opportunity for local community groups to play a part in the celebrations.

“Grants from $2500 to $20,000 will be available to a broad range of organisations with each federal electorate eligible to receive up to $100,000 for up to 10 projects,” Mr Entsch said.

“Projects that are suitable must include formal commemorative events to mark the Jubilee, plantings of regionally‑appropriate tree species, and installation of commemorative signage or plaques.”

Cape York stores receive $1.2 million in grant funds REMOTE community stores across Cape York will share in more than $1 million to strengthen the supply of essential goods, groceries and other critical supplies.

Federal Minister for Indigenous Australians Ken Wyatt said the funding would provide stores with the resources they need to improve their supply chains, storage and delivery of products in their communities.

“In the 2021-22 budget we committed $5 million to invest in remote stores to improve food security and strengthen supply chains,” Mr Wyatt said.

“This grant round has gone beyond that budget commitment, with $8 million directly supporting communities across Australia as they contend with the impacts of the pandemic and natural disasters.

“We saw the increased need for reliable food security in remote communities, listened and acted.”

Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch said three organisations that service Cape York communities will receive funding to make immediate improvements to their store.

“CEQ will receive $267,000 to purchase six refrigerated containers for Doomadgee, Kowanyama and Pormpuraaw,” Mr Entsch said.

“Seisia Community Torres Strait Islander Corporation will receive $500,000 towards purchasing cold rooms, refrigeration, backup generator, in-storage facilities, vehicle, forklift and staff training.

“The local store is an essential service and this funding will help

ensure they continue to make a real difference delivering food and other goods at reasonable prices.”

ENTERPRISE GRANTS FIVE Cape York organisations will receive a combined $1.1 million as part of the federal government’s Indigenous Land Enterprise Infrastructure Fund grants.

Mr Entsch said Wuthathi Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC would use a $299,570 grant to construct female ranger accommodation, senior ranger accommodation and a bore for secure water supply.

Yintjingga Aboriginal Corporation in Cape York is another successful applicant and will receive $255,000 to upgrade water treatment and distribution system at Port Stewart.

The system will provide a safe and reliable water supply to the ranger base.

The other successful Cape York grant recipients were Balnggarrawarra Land Trust ($155,958), Muunthiwarra Aboriginal Corporation ($145,000) and Rinyirru Aboriginal Corporation ($299,977).

WITH flooding affecting parts of Cape York, health authorities are reminding locals to take precautions against melioidosis.

Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service public health medical officer Dr Allison Hempenstall said three cases of melioidosis had been reported within the region this year.

“While this is not a large number, it’s worth our communities being aware that cases are occurring,” she said.

In 2021, a total of eight cases were reported throughout the region and 12 cases in 2020.

“Melioidosis is a soil-borne bacterial disease that can cause pneumonia, abdominal organ, skin and bloodstream infections,” Dr Hempenstall said.

“While potentially fatal, melioidosis is treatable and curable with antibiotics. The last death from the disease in our region was in 2018.

“Melioidosis is very uncommon in healthy adults and rarely seen in children.

“However, people who have diabetes, chronic lung disease, chronic kidney disease, cancer, medication that suppresses their immune system and drink too much alcohol are most at risk of developing the infection.”

Cook MP impressed on trip north MEMBER for Cook Cynthia Lui said a trip to Cooktown and Hope Vale had highlighted some of the positive contributions made by councils and community groups in the region.

The state MP made a trip up the Mulligan Highway earlier this month.

“I also met with the Cook Shire mayor Peter Scott and the councillors to discuss state matters.”

Ms Lui also joined Fred and Erica Deeral for a small gathering at Reconciliation Rocks in Cooktown.

“It was a privilege to connect with the children of the late Eric Deeral, who was a former Member for Cook,” she said.

Simple turtle gate helps protect a native species

NATIVE freshwater turtles have been caught in the battle to keep feral pigs out of coastal wetlands, with many adult turtles becoming fatally trapped by fences.

But now scientists and Cape York Traditional Owners have found it’s possible to keep the destructive pests out and give turtles safe passage to move between water bodies during critical life-cycle periods.

It’s called a turtle gate and any freshwater floodplain fence can be modified to include it by removing a small section of wire, with little more than a pair of pliers.

The research, led by James Cook University’s Centre for Tropical Water and Aquatic Ecosystem Research, shows the modifications can be made to the most common exclusion fences used in Australia.

TropWATER principal researcher Nathan Waltham said many inland wetlands tend to dry out completely in the dry season, resulting in the migration of freshwater species.

“These freshwater turtles need to make the very slow journey across land, from one wetland to another waterhole,” Dr Waltham said.

“In cases where fences have

been built around wetlands to protect them from feral animals, we found many turtles simply became stuck either inside or outside of the wetlands.

“Without being able to move to another river or creek, turtles would often not survive either because of dehydration or from starvation.”

The research showed any freshwater turtle with a shell width greater than the diagonal wire gap would likely become trapped, limiting their ability to access nesting sites, other waterholes, mates and food.

“These turtle gates are a fast, cost-effective solution, which could be included by landholders or rangers,” Dr Waltham said.

The research was funded by the federal government’s National Environmental Science Program through the Northern Australia Environmental Resources Hub. North Australian Indigenous Land and Sea Management Alliance research manager Justin Perry said feral pigs were the worst invasive mammal in Australia and managing the feral animals was a “hard balance” to get right.

“Pigs can contaminate water sources and quickly destroy a wetland in just a few days, decimating crucial habitats for native plants and animals,” he said.

You were a man with the most ferocious willpower we have ever known.

You would wake up every day to get things done and despite the pain we know you would have been suffering, rarely, if ever, did we hear a complaint about how you were physically feeling. You had such strength of character that it still humbles today. You often pushed people outside of their comfort zone, and upset them more than once, however you meant well and knew that nothing ever grows inside someone’s comfort zone.

You never had a bad word to say to us about family. If ever you heard someone speak ill of a family member or close friend, you would always follow it up with a positive comment about that person. You often took the time to try and understand the reasons people acted the way they did and the fact that we are all flawed but have our strengths and own way of being the best we can. It was always evident you loved your family very much and if family can’t stand up for each other why should anyone else.

Not a day goes by that we don’t think of you Dad. You play a part in so many of our daily moments. Whether it’s waving at people who drive by, since you always had a welcoming wave for anybody, or just something as simple as sitting down for a cup of coffee to read a good book, which you loved to do when you had the time. We have all often said at times of reflection or hardship we have smelt cigarette smoke where there should be none as if you are there to share the moment or offer support.

You truly lived life! You did not let illness stop you from experiencing firsthand some truly amazing moments, that so many others never will, simply for the lack of trying.

We will think of you often and try to embrace the time we are given and improve the way we live it.

Can’t believe it’s been 10 years, you are missed always and loved forever.

Cowboys overpower depleted Canberra line-up THE North Queensland Cowboys were too strong for an undermanned Canberra Raiders in Townsville on Saturday night, winning 26-6 after a strong second half performance.

Led by Jason Taumalolo and star recruit Chad Townsend, the home side dominated possession and field position before running over the top of Canberra late in the match.

Taumalolo ran a game high 161 metres and was supported by young forwards Jeremiah Nanai,

Tom Gilbert, Griffin Neame and Heilum Luki as they powered through the middle of the ruck.

Townsend and five-eighth Tom Dearden enjoyed playing behind a dominant forward pack to create opportunities for outside backs Hamiso Tabuia-Fidow, Valentine Holmes, Murray Taulagi, Peta Hiku and Kyle Feldt.

The only sour note for Cowboys coach Todd Payten was a seasonending knee injury to forward Mitch Dunn in the first half.

In contrast, the Raiders last

NRLW APPLICATION THE Cowboys will formally apply to enter the NRLW in 2023 following today’s announcement by the NRL not to expand the competition for the 2022 season.

North Queensland approached the NRL in December to register interest in entering a team in the NRLW for 2022.

The club believed it was ready

to field a side in the premier women’s rugby league competition in the country following the success of the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys Gold Stars.

The Gold Stars reached the semi-finals of the 2021 QRLW season and subsequently had eight players sign NRLW contracts for the delayed 2021 season.

“Unquestionably we are disappointed the NRL will not be expanding its NRLW program in 2022,” Cowboys chief executive officer Jeff Reibel said.

EMILY Jaszczyszyn is still learning the game of cricket but appears to have a bright future if early signs are any indication.

The 11-year-old Weipa junior was one of the shining lights for her representative sides last year, producing some challenging spells in Caloundra and Ingham.

Emily was picked for a combined North Queensland Invitational squad last year when Peninsula couldn’t find enough girls to form an XI. Teaming up with juniors from Townsville and surrounds, she helped her side win four games out of six on the Sunshine Coast.

Emily then represented Cricket Far North at the NQ U13s tournament in Ingham where they also enjoyed some success.

A natural right-arm medium pace bowler, Emily has been mentored by her dad Mark.

She shows the same attributes as a young Ellyse Perry, although still has some work to do if she wants to be a genuine all-rounder.

Emily was given the opportunity to represent the region after taking up an invitation from Trish Spry to trial.

“It’s been a lot of fun and I’m hoping to make the team again this year,” she said.

Steve sizzles in heat EIGHTEEN golfers braved hot conditions in Weipa last Wednesday for the Wackers and it was Steve Abraham who came out on top.

His nett score of 33.5 was enough to beat Mick Flemming, who had 36.5.

Abraham also had the nearest to pin on the 7th, while no one claimed the 9th.

Broncos undefeated THE Brisbane Broncos survived a final Canterbury onslaught to run out winners 16-10 at Sydney’s Accor Stadium, giving them back-to-back victories to start their 2022 NRL season.

They defended their line grimly in the final minutes and then a Josh Addo-Carr burst down the eastern touchline nearly brought the third try the Bulldogs were so desperately seeking.

But a 12-9 error count by the home side didn’t help matters when they tried to grab the ascendancy earlier.

The match was locked up twice, proving the arm wrestle it turned out to be.

The Broncos last started a NRL season with two straight wins in 2020 — but they ended up with the wooden spoon that year.

A permanent boxing ring has been set up for sparring inside the old squash courts building in Weipa.

Boxing club rapt to have a permanent home base

Lions, Suns superb QUEENSLAND’S two AFL teams started their season in style on the weekend.

Brisbane produced a barnstorming final quarter to defeat Port Adelaide by 11 points at the Gabba on the back of four goals from Joe Daniher.

Meanwhile, the Gold Coast Suns enjoyed their first win in Perth after beating West Coast by 27 points. Young gun Matt Rowell was the star with 33 possessions.

It may not look flash on the outside – or on the inside – but the Cape York Boxing Club is happy to have a permanent training base.

SCOTT Wallace can’t wipe the smile off his face when he thinks about the new home of Cape York Boxing.

“It’s like 15 years in the making.

It’s definitely a dream come true,” he said of having a permanent facility to work out of.

Previously the club was operating under a makeshift shelter and Wallace had to cart pads, gloves and bags around in his van.

Now, the club has set up base in the old Weipa squash courts, which were purchased by the WCCCA. While the long-term plan for the building is for it to be demolished and turned into a shopping precinct, the boxing club should get five years out of it.

“It’s perfect with the three bays,” Wallace said.

“We’ve got a ring set up in one, a bag room in another and we’re getting some weights in the third to make it a bit of a workout area.

“There are some people who are really keen on their boxing and others who are involved to keep in shape.”

Wallace said there was enough natural talent in the Cape to develop future boxers.

“We’ve got a couple of teenage boys training with us and they don’t even know how good they are,” he said.

“But they are enjoying the training and enjoying learning new skills and techniques.”

Wallace thanked the WCCCA for its support of the club and encouraged interested people to join up to the club.
