THERE is a record amount of active COVID-19 cases in the region but health experts believe the peak of the virus will soon pass.

Health Service chief executive Bev Hamerton told Cape York Weekly that she was pleased with the region’s approach to COVID-19 and hoped the worst of it would soon be behind us.

“We originally thought the peak

would be in late March but that is now being brought forward by a couple of weeks,” she said.

“So far our systems are working fairly well and the numbers haven’t spiralled out of control.

“School returning has played a

part in cases rising, but we thought that might happen.

“But now is not the time to be complacent as we enter a period with high numbers of cases. We need everyone to be vigilant.”

THE region lost another female boss last week when Sea Swift CEO Rochelle Macdonald resigned suddenly.

The shipping company put out a statement on Tuesday, saying that Dr Macdonald was “leaving to pursue other interests and opportunities”.

Sea Swift chairman Steve Boulton will take on the executive chair position until a replacement can be found.

“Sea Swift has commenced a formal executive search process to replace the role of chief executive officer, formerly held by Dr Rochelle Macdonald, who is leaving to pursue other interests and opportunities,” Mr Boulton said.

Another Aurukun property goes up in flames

AT least one person has been charged following an alleged arson attack on a vacant house in Aurukun last weekend.

Acting Cape Patrol Inspector Peter Williamson said police had charged a person following the blaze. He said it was fortunate that no one was living in the home at the time. The latest arson attack follows a string of deliberately lit property fires in the community. More than a dozen homes have been destroyed in the past three years.

Momentum is gathering for space centre project

SPACE Centre Australia hopes to open an office in Napranum or Weipa in the coming months and have employees on the ground to build a public network as it pushes on with plans to build a spaceport in Cape York.

Decisions on $2 million worth of grants are also expected soon, says founder James Palmer, who hopes to use the funding to push ahead with bigger plans.

“Things are ticking along nicely but there’s still a bit to go through,” Mr Palmer told Cape York Weekly.

“The intention is to open up a project office in Weipa or Napranum for public view, meet and greets and consultation.

“We would be looking to employ a couple of people out of Weipa in March or April.”

Mr Palmer said Space Centre Australia was keen to build on the community consultation it did with the Weipa and Napranum communities last year and win support at the grassroots level.

“We are pressing on with developing the lease with the Napranum council,” he said.

“We’ll never own the land. We are working with the CoordinatorGeneral’s office in the state government and will need an ILUA (Indigenous Land Use Agreement), which is in development work with the Mokwiri PBC.” Mr Palmer said two $1 million grant applications would help push the project forward and was expecting positive news soon.

“One of them is through the Minister for Innovation’s Moon to Mars initiative, while the other is a Northern Australia development grant,” he said.

“We’ve had some really serious support from Warren Entsch and the state government, which is pleasing as they are both sides of politics.”

The founder of Space Centre Australia also had the chance to brief Prime Minister Scott Morrison about the project in Cairns last month.

“He was really supportive and we are working closely with his office and advisers to push this,” Mr Palmer said.

“We are very cautiously optimistic about the project but there is still more work to do.”

Collaboration required to reduce arson attacks AN urgent call to improve fire regimes and tackle arson on Cape York was made at the 2022 North Australia Savanna Fire Forum last week, where it was revealed that over 260,000 hectares on Piccaninny Plains Wildlife Sanctuary have been impacted by arson during the late dry season since 2014.

Sally Gray, the assistant manager at Piccaninny Plains, told government officials and conservation groups that regional collaboration was key to reducing the impacts of unplanned fires that threaten the Cape’s unique ecosystems, critical habitats and local wildlife.

Piccaninny Plains has invested more than a decade in fire management planning which is delivered across the sanctuary.

Prescribed burning often takes place as soon as country can carry fire around mid-May and will run until the early dry season.

This prescribed burning limits the spread of intense lateseason fires and protects patches of crucial old-growth vegetation and fire-sensitive habitats.

TAXPAYERS have footed a $40,000 bill for an air search that was most likely activated from a discarded EPIRB device.

A rescue jet was sent from Cairns to the Weipa area after an EPIRB was activated on Saturday.

Weipa Police and the Weipa Volunteer Marine Rescue branch were the first port of call, but could not locate anyone in distress.

The jet was sent as an extra precaution in case it was a genuine emergency.

As the EPIRB was an older model, it did not provide emergency services with a pinpoint location.

Authorities believe it was most likely in the Weipa landfill and have reminded all Cape York residents to take care when disposing of their EPIRBs. “Every year, thousands of dollars are spent in Australia searching for beacons in rubbish dumps,” a VMR Weipa spokesperson said.

“Beacon batteries are hazardous items which should be disposed of in an environmentally friendly way.

“Check the beacon manufacturer’s instructions, they may provide instructions on how to disconnect the beacon battery.

“Once disconnected, contact your local waste management facility to ask about disposing of your unwanted beacon in an environmentally friendly way. A small fee may apply.

“After disposing of your unwanted beacon please advise the Australia Maritime Safety Authority.”

Use your vouchers

Ms Gray proposed that the industry develop a regional plan that could reduce the risk of unplanned fires, including chopper sharing for faster response times, increased reporting to the police and Rural Fire Service, and work closely with local media to raise awareness of arson attacks as they occur.

“In the Cape, unplanned fire is a very complicated business,” she explained.

“We have huge amounts of biomass material unlike many other regions and we have a

tight window to control burns before they reach critical habitat and threatened species.

“Species impacted by these burns can include the Red Goshawk, Australia’s rarest bird of prey, which is fledging during the late dry season.

“When we get to the fire season at the end of the year, fire danger is extreme. I hope that by working together, we can better manage and reduce the extent of destructive burns due to arson.”

manager Graham Woods to deal with unplanned fires and protect 160,000 hectares of ecologically diverse landscape at Piccaninny Plains, urged the community to vocalise the cause of unplanned fires during the late dry season and hold arsonists accountable for their behaviour.

“We need to stop normalising these unplanned fires in the region because the truth is, it’s not normal and by turning a blind eye we’re giving arsonists a free pass to continue carrying out illegal activity.”

THE Western Cape Chamber of Commerce is encouraging Rio Tinto employees and contractors to use their $100 Christmas vouchers before they expire.

Pennefather closed NAPRANUM Aboriginal Shire Council has closed Pennefather Beach north of Weipa and has asked Cape York locals to respect the wishes of mourning Traditional Owners.

While this closure is temporary, the council has forecast future closures to parts of the beach later this year during the turtle nesting season.

Between June and October, around 29km of beach will be closed to vehciles and ATVs to protect the nests.

Health service prepared for peak

THE Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service is expecting record amounts of active COVID-19 cases in the coming weeks but believes the peak will arrive sooner than first predicted.

On Friday, there were 580 active cases in the region, with the majority of them in the western part of Cape York.

Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service chief executive Bev Hamerton said locals had been doing the right thing to slow the spread and keep numbers manageable.

“We are pleased with how things have gone so far but we still don’t want things to get out of control,” she told Cape York Weekly.

“It steadied off for a while and then all of a sudden we went up 200 cases.

“That spike was most likely on the back of kids going back to school, which is something we predicted.”

Ms Hamerton said at the start of January that the health service was predicting a peak in late March, but she changed that to early March when asked last week.

“We were always a couple of weeks behind Cairns and they are just starting to have their peak so we think we’ll get ours in early March and then see numbers start to go down,” she said.

Of the 580 cases in the region, almost a third were in the Weipa district.

Weipa itself had 94 active cases, Napranum had 73 and Mapoon had 15, although that number is expected to rise when the latest figures are released.

Pormpuraaw, which is a community with one of the highest vaccination rates, had 70 active cases on Friday.

To date, accounting for those who have been discharged from quarantine, the TCHHS has recorded 2727 cases of COVID-19.

“With widespread transmission of COVID-19 evident throughout our region, vaccination remains our best protection against the virus,” Ms Hamerton said.

“While being vaccinated will not prevent you getting COVID-19, vaccination has been proven to reduce the severity of the illness and help keep you out of hospital and, especially, out of intensive care.

“We are currently delivering booster vaccination doses across the region, along with vaccinations for children aged 5–11, as well as first and second doses for people who have not yet had them.

“Everyone aged 16 years and older is eligible for the booster vaccination if it has been three months or more since the completion of their primary course of vaccine – both doses.

“To date, we have delivered 6078 booster vaccinations across the region, which represents about 63 per cent of those aged 16 years and over that are eligible.

“If you are due for your booster, please come and get it for that added layer of protection.

“Evidence from New South

Wales indicates that the parts of Sydney hit hardest by the Omicron wave also had the lowest booster vaccine update.

“New data also shows you are 20 times less likely to die of COVID if you have had your booster.

“We are also delivering vaccinations for children aged 5-11 years and, to date, have delivered 1525 vaccinations to this age group, which represents more than 45 per cent of eligible children.

“But we would like to see this percentage increase, so I urge parents to please bring their children in for the vaccination.

“The Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine is safe and has been fully approved and recommended for people aged 5 years and older.

“We’ve seen in other areas of Australia and around the world that children are more susceptible to the emerging strains of COVID. “Like adults, some children who get COVID-19 will be asymptomatic.

“However, there are children who have become seriously ill and needed hospitalisation after contracting COVID-19.

“For children, a significant risk of contracting COVID-19 is a long-term inflammatory syndrome, which affects about one in every 3000 children, and can cause illnesses such as fever, rash, and intestinal, heart, and neurological issues long after their recovery from COVID-19.”

Cooktown Hospital has paused birthing services, likely for at least two months, as it struggles to fill vacant positions.

AT least four expectant mothers from the southern Cape will be asked to relocate for the final stages of their pregnancy after birthing services were suspended at Cooktown last week.

The decision was made by the Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service as a result of key staff shortages.

“Currently we have vacancies at Cooktown for senior medical officers with the advanced training in obstetrics and anaesthetics required to deliver a safe birthing service,” said Dr Marlow Coates, the executive director of medical services for the region.

“As a result of those vacancies, we are currently unable to offer a

safe birthing service at Cooktown.

“The safety of our mothers and their babies must always be of the absolute highest priority, so we are temporarily pausing birthing at Cooktown.

“Ante and post-natal maternity services will continue to be provided unchanged.

“However. during the temporary suspension, Cooktown women will need to be relocated to Cairns or Mareeba from 36 weeks until delivery to ensure a safe birth.

“While we have no expected births in Cooktown for the remainder of February, we have four women scheduled to give birth in March who will be affected, and all are being contacted and advised.

“All expectant mums required to relocate to Cairns or elsewhere

to give birth will receive support with transport and accommodation costs through the Patient Travel Subsidy Scheme.”

Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service chief executive Bev Hamerton said she hoped it would not be a long pause.

“We’ve got some really strong feelers out and we have one recruitment in place,” she said.

“As we see the easing of COVID restrictions there will be more people looking around to move.”

Ms Hamerton admitted that the problems in Cooktown with staffing could be emulated in Weipa, which is due to commence birthing services later this year.

“In remote areas it is not as simple as there are other factors to consider,” she said.

Dr Coates said the Cooktown Hospital was aiming to restart birthing services within 10 weeks, or “earlier if our recruitment of suitably qualified medical personnel is successful”.

“I would like to thank families in the Cooktown area for their understanding while we undertake this recruitment program,” he said.

“Clinics and all other patient and ward services at Cooktown will not be affected and the emergency department will continue to operate as normal.

“There will be no change for emergencies as patients presenting to the hospital who require emergency surgical intervention will continue to be transported to Cairns in accordance with existing emergency evacuation policies.”

THE federal government’s flood and cyclone reinsurance pool for northern Australia has passed the Lower House, ending an 11year battle for Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch.

“The first time we had the opportunity of fixing this catastrophe was back when I approached the Treasurer, Wayne Swan, 11 years ago, pleading with him to establish a reinsurance pool,” Mr Entsch said in parliament last week.

“So let’s not come here and suggest this is something that has been ignored.

“At the time the argument was that there was no market failure and that governments could only intervene if there was market failure.

“Because the insurance companies were vehemently opposed to it – the Insurance Council of Australia wanted nothing to do with it – so they refused to cooperate, in spite of the fact that I was getting calls like the one from Mark Cromwell, from the Ferntree Rainforest Hotel, located in Cape Tribulation.

“In 2018 it was $10,000 for their insurance. In 2019 it was $100,000 for their insurance.

“In 2021 it was $200,000 for their insurance.

“When you’ve got 27 staff, there is no point in trading anymore with the risk versus profit.

“While there is a review in three years time, I really appreciated the minister’s commitment to do a review in 12 months.

“That is absolutely critical, because that will see whether or not it is working and whether we need to make adjustments on who needs it one way or another.

“I welcome the fact that we have bipartisan support on it now. Let’s stop throwing barbs.

Let’s start working together and making sure we get the best possible outcome for this so that we can roll this out.

“Maybe we’ll see something here that can go out to other communities as well.”

Metallica raises cash for project METALLICA Minerals has raised more than $3 million to continue funding its silica sand project at Cape Flattery.

The placement was completed with support from new institutional investor Deutsche Balaton Group – which purchased shares to the value of $2 million – as well as Metallica’s largest pre-placement shareholders Ilwella and Dostal Group.

“We are delighted this placement has enabled us to introduce a high-quality institutional shareholder in Deutsche Balaton Group to our register,” Metallica chair Theo Psaros said.

“Combined with additional support from Ilwella and Dostal Group, this represents a significant milestone for the company.

“We had planned to be in a position to attract institutional support as our project progressed, and to secure this support now is testament to the delivery of our strategy.

Upon the new funds being received, the company will be well-funded with over $7 million available to progress its significant program of activity in the current calendar year including: • Completing environmental studies and applications to advance the project’s development;

• Finalising the Cape Flattery Silica Sand pre-feasibility study; • Commencing the project’s definitive feasibility study in Q2, 2022; • Implementing a more formal silica sand marketing program to procure potential offtake partners for the project.

The Cape Flattery Silica Sand project is located on the east coastline of Cape York, around 40km north of Cooktown.

The project is adjacent to the

silica mining and shipping operation owned by Mitsubishi.

The Cape Flattery Port area is owned and operated by Ports North, a Queensland Governmentowned corporation.

Ports North is the owner of the jetty leased by Mitsubishi.

The ship-loading equipment on the jetty is primarily owned by Mitsubishi.

Metallica is not the only company looking to start up in the Cape

Flattery area.

Diatreme Resources has also expressed a strong interest in the high-grade silica deposit.

If its plans go ahead, Diatreme hopes to supply enough material to create three billion solar panels from the silica at its Galalar site.

The company also has its eye on other deposits in the area.

Diatreme’s initial plans would be to ship 1.3 million tonnes of product per year from Nob Point.

MEMBER for Cook Cynthia Lui says she is pleased that the Works for Queensland funding allocation of over $15 million to local councils in Cape York is delivering key infrastructure and job opportunities.

“This is a fantastic initiative for regional and remote communities across Cape York and for our communities’ economic recovery from the pandemic,” she said.

“In Cook Shire we are seeing a $2.2 million contribution towards critical electrical systems upgrades that have either been deemed obsolete or non-compliant at water and wastewater plants.

Eight kids climb tree to flee croc

A PLA-N Yuzhao-class amphibious transport dock vessel transits the Torres Strait last week after aiming a laser at an RAAF aircraft the night before.

Chinese vessel aims laser at our surveillance aircraft AUSTRALIAN diplomats and defence personnel have demanded answers from Beijing after a Chinese navy vessel aimed a militarygrade laser at a RAAF aircraft which could have blinded the Australian crew.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said his government had made official representations with their Chinese counterparts over the incident, which he labelled an “act of intimidation”.

The action was taken by a Luyang-class guided-missile destroyer at 12.35am last Thursday as it sailed through the Arafura Sea,

which is between the Northern Territory and Papua New Guinea.

The destroyer then travelled through the Torres Strait and into the Coral Sea. The Australian aircraft was in the area to conduct surveillance on the Chinese ships, which is standard activity when Chinese ships are sailing through Australia’s northern approaches.

“I can see it no other way than an act of intimidation, one that is unprovoked, unwarranted. And Australia will never accept such acts of intimidation,” Mr Morrison said, suggesting that China would

react much more aggressively if Australia ever did that to a Chinese aircraft.

“I have no doubt that if ... it was done to a Chinese surveillance aircraft, then people could guess what the reaction to that would have been. It was a dangerous act.

“I thought it was a reckless and irresponsible act.”

Representatives from the Australian Defence Force and the Department of Foreign Affairs have lodged separate representations with Beijing over the incident.

It is not the first time China has used lasers against Australian air-

craft, with navy helicopter pilots reporting being hit by lasers while exercising in the South China Sea in 2019, forcing them to land nearby as a precaution.

In 2018, the United States issued a formal complaint to the Chinese government over the use of military-grade lasers directed at aircraft which resulted in minor injuries to two American pilots.

Defence Minister Peter Dutton said the latest action was “completely unacceptable”.

“It can result in the blindness of the crew and can obviously result in damage of equipment,” he said.

EIGHT children were rescued after climbing a tree at Kowanyama to escape from a crocodile.

The children, aged between 11 and 14, had been playing in Magnificent Creek last weekend when one of them saw the crocodile approaching them.

It’s estimated the reptile was more than five metres in length.

Senior Constable Martin Shephard said all eight children climbed into the tree and began yelling for help.

“Someone on the bank has actually heard and they’ve then called their local police to assist,” he said.

“Upon arrival, police have actually called out to the kids over the loudspeaker, thinking they were joking and being a bit silly about a crocodile being in the water.

“However, the kids were quite scared at the time.”

The officers borrowed a boat from a local elder to ferry the children to safety.

“While they were trying to rescue the kids out of the tree, the crocodile has actually appeared,” said Senior Constable Shephard.

“This crocodile was actually larger than the boat and it was a five-metre boat.”

Mikel Whipper was farewelled by the Cook Shire Council’s hardworking water and wastewater teams after completing his apprenticeship.

Qualified apprentice eyes new role on tropical island

COOK Shire has farewelled one of its brightest apprentices in Mikel Whipper. The local lad spent four years as an apprentice plumber in the council’s water and wastewater team and was handed his trade qualifications earlier this month. He’s now heading eastwards to pursue his plumbing career in the private sector on a tropical island. “We are incredibly proud of being a part of Mikel’s success and we look forward to welcoming three new apprentices to our teams over the coming weeks,” a council spokesperson said.

TRADITIONAL Owners and Prescribed Body Corporates will take control in delivering all Native Title services in the Torres Strait from July 1 when Gur A Baradharaw Kod Torres Strait Sea and Land Council (GBK) is recognised as the Native Title service provider.

The Torres Strait Regional Authority will cease being the Native Title Representative Body and stop providing Native Title services on June 30.

Minister for Indigenous Australians Ken Wyatt said it was the right time to transfer Native Title services.

“Under the national Closing the Gap agreement, all Australian governments committed to building Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community-con-

trolled sectors to deliver services,” he said.

“By recognising Gur A Baradharaw Kod as service provider for the Torres Strait region, the federal government is continuing to do its part to deliver on this priority reform to strengthen and empower Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and people.”

Since its inception on July 1, 1994, the TSRA has provided over $71 million for Native Title services, achieving 28 Native Title determinations for almost 100 islands, islets and cays and approximately 40,000 square kilometres of sea country, and the establishment of 21 PBCs. An additional five claims are before the court – successful determinations would see Tradi-

tional Owners’ rights and interests recognised across the majority of the region’s sea country and remaining islands, including Waiben (Thursday Island) and Kirriri (Hammond).

TSRA chair Pedro Stephen said the authority provided quality and culturally appropriate professional services to Native Title holders and claimants for more than 25 years.

“TSRA is proud of the outcomes produced in its NTRB capacity and acknowledges the board and administrative staff who have worked hard to maintain, protect and progress Native Title interests,” he said.

The transition to GBK will be momentous for the region.

NEWS IN BRIEF Chevathan holds lead FORMER Napranum mayor Roy Chevathan appears certain to win a spot back on the council after taking a big early lead in the by-election count.

Voters in the Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council went to the polls on Friday and Saturday to elect a replacement councillor.

Mr Chevathan, who was first on the ballot, had 54 per cent of the vote at the time of press.

Second was Charles Mene with 22 per cent, followed by Ernest Madua with 14.5 per cent and Ethel Bosuen with 6.5 per cent of the vote.

Cafe owner steps up to keep store’s doors open

MAPOON’S Wild Cape Cafe has one of the best burgers you can buy in Far North Queensland and is probably one of the cheapest, too.

Cafe owner Patrick Akenson didn’t want to rip off the remote Aboriginal town he has called home for more than a decade, which is why he made his prices affordable.

The takeaway food was not only a big hit with locals.

Word quickly spread south and Weipa residents were doing day trips to Mapoon for a spot of fishing, a swim at the splash park and, of course, a burger.

Tourists started arriving in bigger numbers, too.

This was all pre-COVID, of course.

The last two years have been difficult for the business, even when COVID-19 hadn’t made its way into Cape York, because locals didn’t want visitors.

Next door to the cafe is the Mapoon store, the community’s only shop and fuel outlet.

Owned and operated by the Mapoon Aboriginal Shire Council, it has been a difficult business to operate due to staff turnover and the fact there is a giant Woolworths an hour down the road in Weipa.

Last year, with the council struggling to find someone to run the store, Patrick and his wife Lou, a Torres Strait Islander who calls Mapoon home, decided to step up and take on the responsibility.

“I think we took over on November 11 and it’s been hard

work,” Patrick said on Sunday afternoon, one of the rare times he has off.

“We’ve had the wet season, we’ve had COVID ... it’s been harder than you would like.”

While Mapoon might not appear to be the most remote community in Cape York, it sure can feel like it at times.

It has no passenger air service, it gets no barge service and relies on a dirt road to Weipa for all of its freight.

The quality of the road can be hit and miss, although it’s mostly the latter at this time of year.

“We get our freight through Tuxies (Tuxworth and Woods truck company) and when the road is closed to Weipa they use Sea Swift,” Patrick said.

“So it’s a juggling act because we need our suppliers down

south to get the freight to Tuxies at a specific time each week and if they miss the delivery, we have to wait a week.”

The good news for Patrick and Lou is that it’s unlikely to be a permanent arrangement.

The Mapoon council is constructing a new store, which is supposed to be finished later this year, which will likely have a new independent operator.

“We just wanted to help out and make sure Mapoon still had its store. A lot of people rely on the store being open.”

With COVID cases now rife throughout the community, the store has also started a boutique home delivery service for those unable to leave their homes.

“They ring up and put in their order and we deliver it to them in the afternoons,” Patrick said.

THIS week marks the 30th anniversary of the death of legendary Cape York truck driver “Toots” Holzeimer, who died on February 29, 1992.

There are a number of tributes to the pioneering woman, who did countless trips to Weipa on the PDR back when there was no bitumen to be found.

Toots died in an accident at Evans Landing in Weipa when she was unloading freight.

SPORT IN BRIEF No driver, no worries RICK Butler was happy to put the ‘big dog’ away on Saturday at Walker Bay to win Cooktown Golf Club’s no driver stableford event from the white tees.

With strong winds adding to the difficulty, golfers had to get creative on the longer holes without their beloved driver.

Scoring wasn’t sensational, but Butler’s 34 points was enough to see him beat his nearest rival by two points.

Sam Godfrey-Roberts was runner-up with 32 points, from Jayde McGowan on 31.

Nearest to the pins were won by Jamie Dobson on 2/11 and 9/18, while Rick Butler went closest on 14.

This week’s event is a nett stroke from the red tees at 9.30am.

Taylor on a countback JIM Taylor’s superior finish to the front nine was the catalyst for his victory in last week’s Wednesday Wackers at Weipa.

Taylor and Terry Oberleuter both finished on nett 33.5 for the nine holes, but it was Taylor who saluted in the countback.

Ross Craven could consider himself a little stiff after smoking a 37 off the stick, but his impossibly low handicap will see him take a while for his next victory.

Sixteen players fronted up and enjoyed some light showers.

Randall O’Neill had the nearest to pins on both 7 and 9, while newcomer Thorn picked up the Bradman’s.

Revenge for Terry BEATEN in a countback on Wednesday, the much-loved Terry Oberleuter bounced back in style on Sunday morning to salute in the Dawn Busters golf.

With a big field of 18 vying for victory, little Tez was in good form to beat Matt Byrne. He also picked up the nearest to pin prize, while Jim Hunter smoked the longest drive on the first.

The Hoffman’s went to a S. Armstrong, who will no doubt be on a first name basis with the Dawn Busters crew next week.

Cowboys beat Bunnies FIELDING a development side, the North Queensland Cowboys beat the South Sydney Rabbitohs 24-12 in a trial at Cairns’ Barlow Park on Saturday.

Registrations open for Weipa Running Festival REGISTRATIONS have opened for the Weipa Running Festival.

In five years, the event has enjoyed increasing numbers of locals don their running shoes to give the event a crack with many taking on the marathon distances for their very first time.

The varied and exciting terrain takes in the local Rocky Point beach front, the lakes, boat ramp and lots of bauxite, which attracts visiting runners, all keen to experience the distance and the Cape at the same time.

This year’s race day will be held on Sunday, July 24 at Andoom Oval.

To maximise participation for those who can’t attend on the day and participants outside of Weipa, the committee has several virtual options available.

to keep the event family friendly with a distance achievable for all ages.

The event consists of 5 different courses including marathon, half marathon, 10km, 5km and a fun run, which all showcase the varied terrain within the Weipa township.

There are great prizes for the top place getters who run the distances on the day and giveaways throughout the festival.

Rio Tinto is again supporting the event and promoting a healthy work-life balance, giving employees a 50 per cent discount if they register before March 31.

The committee also has early bird and Cape York resident discounts available.
