Dog-loving croc trapped at Cooktown A LARGE male croc has been removed from the Endeavour River at Cooktown after it developed a taste for local dogs.

Wildlife officers from the Department of Environment and Science captured and removed the 4.3-metre estuarine crocodile on February 5.

It was a week after they got a report of a large croc acting aggressively towards residents.

It had also recently taken at least two dogs from the area.

Wildlife officers declared it was a problem crocodile due to its size, location and behaviour.

It was captured in a baited trap and then transported to a DES holding facility in Cairns.

The croc had sustained multiple injuries and wildlife officers

believe these were caused by territorial disputes with other male crocodiles. It was missing both its front right foot and the end of its tail.

The department said the croc may need veterinary treatment.

Due to its large size, the crocodile must be dealt with as an ‘iconic crocodile’ under Queensland’s conservation laws.

This means the decision on where the crocodile will be placed and housed must be made in consultation with the relevant Traditional Owners.

It also means that the animal may only be placed with a registered crocodile farm or zoo which agrees to use it for educational purposes about crocodile conservation and their ecology.

WEIPA will get its own general manager again after the sudden resignation of Michelle Elvy paved the way for Rio Tinto to shuffle the deckchairs on its bauxite business.

Former Weipa GM Dan van der Westhuizen is now the chief operating officer of Rio Tinto’s Pacific operations and made the announcement to staff in a memo at lunchtime on Thursday.

He said: “Michelle Elvy ... has resigned and will leave the Rio Tinto business, effective today.”

However, it appeared the mining company had been well prepared for the news.

In the same announcement about Ms Elvy’s resignation, it was also announced that Rio Tinto had decided to go back to its old ways of employing a GM at both Weipa and Gove, rather than having one person manage both sites.

Shona Markham will take the reins at Weipa, moving from Rio Tinto’s Bell Bay Aluminium operations in Tasmania.

“I’m delighted Shona has accepted the new role as general manager of Weipa,” Mr van der Westhuizen said.

“Cape York is the future of Rio Tinto’s Australian bauxite business, so, looking forward, it’s appropriate to have a GM role wholly focused on Weipa operations, supporting our people and growing the very important partnerships with the Cape York community.

“Shona has been part of our Pacific operations business for more than 18 years, including more than 10 years at Gladstone.

“Shona understands the importance of Weipa’s operations and its place in the community well. She has an excellent track record in safety and operational performance and engaging with her teams and community.

In his memo to staff, Mr van der Westhuizen thanked Ms Elvy for her contribution.

“Since joining us in March 2021, Michelle has supported the bauxite team during an unprecedented time responding to the COVID-19 pandemic and in bringing more alignment between the Gove and Weipa operations,” he wrote.

“I want to thank Michelle for her contribution over the past 11 months and wish her well in her future endeavours.”

There was no explanation for the sudden departure.

Rio Tinto sources told Cape York Weekly it was not related to the recent independent report regarding Rio Tinto’s workplace culture of bullying, racism and harassment.

Last week’s reshuffle to bring back individual GMs for Weipa and Gove would suggest that Rio Tinto is now conceding the role was too great for one individual to manage.

Steven Dunstone, currently operations manager at Gove, has accepted the role of general manager at the Northern Territory site, which is in a major transition period.

Weipa Town Authority chair Michael Rowland said he looked forward to working with the new GM and hoped she would be in the chair for a significant period.

“It’s been difficult having so many GMs or acting GMs in a short period,” he said.

“We know they have a mine to run but there’s also the town, which needs a lot of support.”

Commerce president Vance Wallin said it was impossible to achieve long-term progress without stability in the general manager position.

“We look forward to working with Shona for a long time and hope she settles into Weipa,” he said.

Bell Bay Aluminium paid tribute to their outgoing boss on Facebook, who was GM at the Tasmania site for less than two years.

“As many of you know, Shona started her career with BBA as a graduate engineer in 2004.

“With a strong ability to lead from the outset, she soon moved into a superintendent role where she spent more than four years.

“In 2009, she made the move to Gladstone to join the team at Boyne Smelters Limited, where she continued to refine her experience as a leader at manager level, before accepting the role of general manager at BBA in 2020 and returning to where it all began some 16 years later.

“Since then, she has made an incredible impact on our site, guiding our team through what has been a challenging time for many as we have responded to the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Cape schools now battling COVID

STUDENTS and teachers in Cape York have been diagnosed with COVID-19 since the return of in-person classes, but the major schools believe they are well equipped to handle the virus.

Dan Tonon, the secondary principal at Western Cape College, said it was inevitable that students and staff would have to deal with the pandemic at some point, but all measures were being taken to stop the spread.

“We’re going pretty well at the moment and things are under control,” he said.

“I couldn’t see a situation where classes would have to stop as a result of an outbreak.

“We’ve got plans in place to manage cases as they happen.”

Students at the residential campus were given rapid antigen tests upon arriving in Weipa and had to have another RAT a week later.

So far there have been no cases at the boarding house.

As it stands, there were 487 active COVID-19 cases within the Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service region on Monday morning.

Active case numbers are fluctuating as cases are discharged from their one-week quarantine and new cases come on.

Two active cases are currently being managed in hospital at Bamaga and Weipa.

These Torres Strait youngsters did their bit to protect themselves last week.

All other active cases within the region are being managed at home or other accommodation arranged in association with local disaster management groups, where home accommodation is unsuitable for isolation.

To date, accounting for those who have been discharged from quarantine, the TCHHS has recorded 2321 cases of COVID-19.

“With widespread transmission of the virus evident throughout our region, vaccination remains our best protection against the virus,”

health service CEO Bev Hamerton said.

“While being vaccinated will not prevent you getting COVID-19, vaccination has been proven to reduce the severity of the illness and help keep you out of hospital and, especially, out of intensive care.

“New national advice is that everyone aged 16 years and older will be considered ‘up to date’ with their COVID–19 vaccinations only if they have received their booster dose, as well as their initial first

and second doses. Everyone aged 16 years and older is eligible for the booster vaccination if it has been three months or more since the completion of their primary course of vaccine – both doses.

“To date, we have delivered 5796 booster vaccinations across the region, which represents nearly 63 per cent of those aged 16 years and over that are eligible.

“If you are due for your booster, please come and get it for that added layer of protection.”

The Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service is also delivering vaccinations for children aged 5-11 years and, to date, have delivered 1421 vaccinations to this age group.

“Please remember, the child vaccine is being delivered in two doses about eight weeks apart so it’s vital you bring your child in for that second dose to ensure they are fully protected,” Ms Hamerton said.

“The sooner you bring your child in for that first dose, the sooner the second dose date will come around so your child can complete their course.”

Currently, 80 per cent of the eligible population aged 12 years and over in the Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service region is now fully vaccinated with two doses of vaccine.

“As well as vaccination, we urge Torres Strait and Cape York residents to observe common

sense hygiene practices. Please wear masks as directed, practice social distancing – at least three big steps – and good hygiene, including frequent washing of hands with sanitiser and get tested if you have symptoms, no matter how mild,” the CEO said.

“If you are sick with mild symptoms and cannot access either PCR or RAT testing, please stay at home.

“If you do experience symptoms such as breathlessness, chest pain or severe light-headedness, seek medical attention.

“Testing helps us quickly find as many cases in the community as possible and reduce the spread of COVID, so please come and be tested if you have any symptoms.”

Testing for COVID-19 is available at all TCHHS health facilities through a combination of RATs PCR tests, depending on individual requirements.

If you are using a RAT at home and test positive, please contact the health service public health team on 0438 755 738 to register the result and for advice. Leave a message if unanswered.

Adult and child vaccinations are now available in most Cape York and NPA communities with specialist teams based at each of our health facilities from Monday to Friday.

In the Torres Strait, roving vaccination teams are visiting island clusters on a rotational basis.

Permanent physio is good news for Cooktown locals

COOKTOWN has a new permanent physiotherapist after strong demand in the community.

Cairns-based clinic Wellness Embodied has opened its new permanent Cooktown clinic, located at 32 Helen Street, opposite IGA. Having delivered a monthly outreach service to Cooktown and surrounding communities since August 2020, director Suzanne Rath noticed a great need for private physiotherapy services in Cooktown.

“We started the Cooktown outreach clinic as an experiment, as I had several clients who would come to see us when I was in Cairns and always told me about the lack of services,” she said.

“I would post on Facebook groups and contacted several local organisations, which was enough to fill us for each trip, but I was still aware of the number of people who didn’t even know we existed.

“Cooktown has a lot of people waiting for, or who have had, orthopaedic surgeries like joint replacements or rotator cuff repairs.

“These people really need ongoing physiotherapy to help them manage pain and get back to 100 per cent strength and function.

“Plus there’s lots of Cooktown residents like tradies, teachers, health and office workers who suffer from postural pain, headaches or sporting injuries and need an early assessment or ongoing care.”

The service will be staffed initially by physiotherapist Monique Hayles, who works four days per week during school hours.

“We have a large team in Cairns that also includes an osteopath, ex-

ercise physiologist, naturopath and remedial massage therapists, so we understand the importance of whole person care and tailoring the service to the individual’s need.

“I can see a real need for additional services on a visiting basis in Cooktown and this is something we would love to provide in future.

Napranum by-election this week

VOTING begins Friday for the Napranum Aboriginal Shire councillor by-election.

Early voting will run from 9am to 6pm on Friday and election day polls will be from 8am to 6pm on Saturday.

Electoral Commission of Queensland commissioner Pat Vidgen said “the polling booth would be operating at Suzie Madua Hall so Napranum’s around 560 electors could choose their next councillor”.

“Electors will choose one of the four candidates – Roy Chevathen, Ethel Bosuen, Charles Mene, and Ernest Madua,” Mr Vidgen said.

“The voting system for an undivided council such as Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council is first-past-the-post.

“As there is only one councillor to be elected in this by-election, electors only need to number one box on their ballot paper for their vote to count.

“Election staff will be available during early voting and on election day to explain the voting system if anyone has questions.”

Mr Vidgen said COVID-safe measures would be in place at the polling booth.

Voting is compulsory at council elections in Queensland.

Time for state to play role in insurance costs – feds THE LNP is calling on the state government to do its bit for north Queensland insurance prices by dropping stamp duty on insurance policies.

Queensland Senator Susan McDonald said the federal government’s proposed $10 billion reinsurance pool would be a game changer for North Queensland.

The reinsurance pool would be backed by a $10 billion annually reinstated Commonwealth guarantee and be administered by the Australian Reinsurance Pool Corporation from July 1, 2022.

More than 880,000 residential, strata and small business property insurance policies in northern Australia are expected to be eligible to be covered by the reinsurance pool for the risk of cyclone and related flood damage.

The bill was last week referred to the Senate Economics Legislation Committee, which is due to report back by March 24, as the federal government faces a tight timetable to meet a planned July start for the scheme.

“I’ve been proud to stand with North Queensland Coalition MPs in pushing for a solution to the insurance market failure we’ve experienced in our part of Australia, and I thank Assistant Finance Minister Michael Sukkar for listening and

acting – not only on our concerns but the concerns of stakeholders during the review process,” Senator McDonald said.

“If Labor wants to oppose this reinsurance pool, they will have to answer to the people of northern Australia.

“We’ve seen Labor MPs fudge facts to criticise the enormous investment the Liberal and Nationals government have made in northern Australia, but now is the chance for them to be part of the solution to a long-standing problem.”

Senator McDonald repeated her calls for the Queensland government to drop stamp duty on insurance premiums to grant further relief to long-suffering North Queenslanders.

“The ACCC reports that the state government raked in $65 million in 2018-19 from North Queensland alone in stamp duty, which adds between 9 and 10 per cent to premiums,” she said.

“The state government should be transparent about what it does with this tax on North Queenslanders, and if they won’t remove it, they should spend all revenue from the north on disaster resilience programs in the north.

“Continuing to charge stamp duty is a slap in the face for North Queensland.”

Cape company lands big contract A CAPE York company has been awarded the contract to replace 30 marine beacons in Weipa and Cairns.

The Weipa-based Carpentaria Contracting will be tasked with replacing 12 beacons in Cairns and 18 in Weipa.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the $5.3 million project would see the beacons upgraded over the next 12 months.

“Safety on the water is paramount, with beacons playing a big role in guiding ships safely into and out of our ports,” he said.

“The project will see 30 beacons upgraded in the vicinity of Cairns and Weipa ports, which are key to the Far North Queensland economy.

“They directly support national and international shipping movements as well as guiding local commercial and recreational boating communities.”

Member for Cairns Michael Healy said the $5.3 million investment would provide a welcome boost to the local economy and support jobs.

“Maritime Safety Queensland has awarded the delivery contract for this important project to Carpentaria Contracting, who have been in the industry for over 25 years,” Mr Healy said.

“The government is proud to support local workforces as we continue our strong economic recovery from COVID-19.

“This project is great news for employment and the economy in the Far North at a time when it is looking to bounce back from the impacts of the pandemic.

“New beacons will ensure vessels enter and exit the port zones safely, and minimise the risk of damage to the extraordinary reef environment in our region.

“The Great Barrier Reef is our region’s premier natural asset, one of the great wonders of the world, and we need to do all we can to protect it.”

Carpentaria Contracting owner Vance Wallin said it was an important contract that would support existing jobs and create new roles.

“We definitely need to hire some people for this job,” he said.

“Crane operators and riggers are some of the positions that we’ll recruit for.”

Mr Wallin said work would begin on the Cairns beacons first, followed by Weipa.

“Getting materials is the hardest bit; there’s a bit of a wait,” he said.

“It’s our biggest marine contract to date and we love working locally and looking after the communities that we live in.

“We replaced six beacons in Weipa in 2019 and last year we did three in Karumba, so we have the experience.”

The existing beacons serving the ports are between 30 and 50 years old.

Cape York NRM resilient and ready for new chair

OUTGOING Cape York Natural Resources Management chair Emma Jackson believes she is leaving the organisation in a stronger position than when she took on the role seven years ago.

Ms Jackson’s resignation was announced last week, with Sally Witherspoon appointed as chair in the interim.

“We’re much more resilient now than what we were, which is something I am proud of,” she told Cape York Weekly.

“We really stepped it up with our systems and internal processes.

“In the past, if Cape York NRM took a hit it didn’t really have that strength and resilience.

“We’ve built great relationships with the Queensland and Australian governments in my time in the role.

“They know who we are; they know about our region and they know what we are about.”

Ms Jackson said Cape York NRM serviced a diverse region that was sparsely populated.

One of the challenges NRM faced in its formative years was gaining the trust of locals.

“I remember speaking with the horticulturists in Lakeland and they didn’t want to share what they were doing,” she said.

“They had this great knowledge but they were worried that sharing might come back to bite them on the arse.

“It took time to build those relationships and get them to trust us.”

The outgoing chair, who lives on Wolverton Station, said NRM was a stronger organisation as a result of partnerships with both land managers and external organisations.

“South Cape York Catchments is a great example – they do an awful lot of work in the Cooktown and Lakeland area and we partner with them as much as possible,” she said.

NEWS IN BRIEF School safety improved COOK Shire Council says that works to improve pedestrian safety, bus access and traffic flow at the carpark and bus zone at the Cooktown P-12 State School car park are now complete.

In response to community feedback, the council secured funding from the state government through the school transport infrastructure program to upgrade the school’s car park and the north side of Charles Street, improving safety, functionality and visibility in the area, especially during busy school pick-up and drop-off periods.

“Cooktown is a fantastic place for young families to grow and thrive. As more young families move here, the successful delivery of this project helps to ensure safer access to the area for students, pedestrians and vehicles for years to come,” mayor Peter Scott said.

The project included collaboration with the school and the bus service provider to design and deliver the following works:  Construction of the footpath on the north side of Charles Street up to the pedestrian crossing in front of the school entrance;  Modification of traffic island on Charles Street and May Street intersection;  Modification of islands in school car park, and;  Signage for a bus-only area.

Emma Jackson has resigned as the chair of Cape York NRM after seven years in the role.

“The ranger groups on the west coast of Cape York are another great example of how we can deliver outcomes in a coordinated partnership.”

Cape York NRM was established in 2010 and Ms Jackson was on the 2009 steering committee which undertook the community engagement to design the organisation.

She was elected by members to be a director in 2013 and two years later was voted by the board to be the chairperson.

“In the first 12 months of existence, our overall investment from the Australian government for project delivery was $1 million. In 2021 our investment received was close to $5 million,” Ms Jackson said.

“The organisation has grown from one employee in 2009 to 20 employees in 2022.

In 2018, Cape York NRM formed a partnership with Terrain NRM and Gulf Savannah called North Qld NRM Alliance with the primary objective being to share knowledge, work more collaboratively and advocate for North Queensland across natural resource management.

Ms Jackson was named chair of the alliance and it was successful in the application to the federal government for a combined investment of $32 million into regional Landcare programs across the region.

“There are a huge number of programs that I am proud of as a team,” she said.

“Our turtle programs, our fire forum and grazing forum have been really successful.”

Ms Jackson has also been the chair of NRM Regions Australia since 2019 – the national peak organisation for all NRM bodies – and will continue in that role.

“The national space is where I see myself bringing value and, having lived here for almost two decades, I understand the diversity to the landscape, the communities and the sectors,” she said.

“In this national role, I can ensure that the Cape York region is not forgotten or ignored in policies and programs.

“Whilst I wear a national hat, I still bring that breadth of knowledge to the government’s table from the region I live in.”

Dead croc at beach COOKTOWN residents stumbled across a dead saltwater crocodile at Cherry Tree Bay on the weekend.

The bloated croc appeared to have been dead for some time.

The cause of death was not immediately known, although it could have been killed by another croc or been hit by a propeller.

Full-time hockey roles for region

A TWO-YEAR search for hockey coordinators in Cape York is over, with appointments made in Weipa and Cooktown last week.

The Douglas Hockey Association may be based in the Douglas Shire, but has a passion for growing the sport in the Far North.

With funding from the federal government, it has plans to bring hockey to all corners of Cape York, as well as the Torres Strait.

“We haven’t got a coordinator for the Bamaga and Thursday Island area yet, but we are looking,” said Greg Mill, the chairman of the Douglas Hockey Association.

“But we’re thrilled to have made two appointments in the Cape.”

Anthony Davies will be the hockey coordinator for Cooktown and the southern Cape.

He will target the Hope Vale, Wujal Wujal, Coen, Kowanyama and Pormpuraaw communities.

“Anthony has played hockey in Cairns and Darwin and has just recently moved to Cooktown with his partner Lucy,” Mr Mill said.

“He will officially commence on March 1, working with schools, PCYCs, councils and our local Indigenous communities.

“He has a passion for our sport and will be a great asset to our team in developing kids and adults to play hockey in Cape York.”

Weipa resident Shania Kannell will be the hockey coordinator for

the western Cape region, including her native Lockhart River.

“She is enthusiastic to take on this amazing new role and we know she will be a big hit working with kids in the local schools and community,” Mr Mill said.

She will also start in March.

Mr Mill said there would be opportunities for children and adults to partake in hockey sessions and hoped regular competitions would start in the bigger communities of Weipa and Cooktown.

“We don’t have hockey fields in any of the communities but we can play indoors in the PCYCs and sports stadiums,” he said.

“There’s a focus on five-a-side games which is a great entry point.

“We have found that there are a lot of people who have played hockey before and now live in the Cape, where there is no access to the sport.

“We’re hoping that can change and maybe they pick it up when they move.

“Places like Weipa are transient communities.”

Mr Mill said Hockey Australia and Hockey Queensland had been supportive of the Douglas Hockey Association’s bid to grow the game.

“Through Hockey Queensland we just got access to $6000 in equipment,” he said.

“Cook Shire has also given us a grant and we’ll look to partner with other councils in the region.”

Research aims to better protect northern quolls

Rio Tinto Weipa has supported the research of quolls in Cape York.

Mr Trewella’s research has found the northern quoll population in the region is restricted to a small number of specific bauxite plateaus that act as natural fire breaks and create ideal vegetation and hollows that provide a haven for quolls.

Separate research from CDU has found that cattle and horses degrade habitat, which then further increases risks of predation by feral cats.

“My work is focused on identifying how the northern quoll’s population is influenced by the quality of their habitat,” Mr Trewella said.

“I hope to apply lessons learned to other quoll populations in Australia by working on creating habitats ideal for quolls.”

Charles Darwin University’s Gavin Trewella has been researching northern quoll populations in Cape York.

A RESEARCHER at Charles Darwin University has been working to improve the conservation outlook for an iconic Australian native animal, the northern quoll.

Once a common mammal in Northern Australia and a relative of the Tasmanian Devil, quolls have been facing rapidly declining populations due to cane toad invasion, extensive fires, grazing, and predation by feral cats.

Northern quolls are now classified as critically endangered in Queensland and the Northern Territory and facing many immediate threats.

Northern quolls, the smallest among all quolls, are currently dotted around Australia’s northern coastlines, including Cape York Peninsula.

Gavin Trewella has been collecting field data about a northern quoll population in Cape York through many long, hot field trips, supported by Rio Tinto Weipa.

Mr Trewella deploys camera traps and uses GPS transmitters to track these elusive, agile nocturnal mammals in the savannahs around Weipa.

CDU ecologist and Northern Territory mammal expert Professor John Woinarski said the northern quoll had suffered a “catastrophic decline” over the years.

“There are not many spots in the Northern Territory where quolls can still be seen.

“Twenty years ago, you would often see quolls while out camping, but such happy sights are no longer the case,” he said.

“It’s really important to try to understand how the quoll population can persist with cane toads, and we also need more information on fire regimes to protect quolls.”

Day Turtle makes a U-turn just Sorry a reminder before volcano near Tonga of the past A TURTLE released after nearly three years of rehabilitation has had another lucky escape – performing a giant U-turn just before January’s volcanic eruption in Tonga.

Tilly the female green sea turtle was released and tagged with a special transmitter at Flynn Reef, off the coast of Cairns in November, before promptly embarking on a journey east towards the Pacific islands.

A Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef tracking map shows the little turtle travelled 1867km over 47 days but began turning back towards the Queensland coast days before the eruption on a volcanic island north of the Tongan capital Nuku’alofa on January 15.

Jennie Gilbert from the Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre, where Tilly spent several years recuperating after becoming stuck in a net with no hope of survival, said the turtle clearly knew something was brewing.

“She was heading towards Vanuatu or the Solomon Islands in a straight line virtually and then two days before the Tonga volcano she did a complete U-turn,” she said.

“She was obviously feeling something, there must have been vibrations, and she has turned around and started heading back

appears to be heading home towards Cairns.

“She’s been pinged on the reef off Cairns and we think she’s heading back to the rehabilitation centre at Fitzroy Island,” she said.

“She’s done more kilometres than any other turtle that we have ever released – over 2700km.

“Not bad considering she’s only just turned three years old.”

CAPE York residents have marked the 14th anniversary of the National Apology to the Stolen Generations.

Guugu Yimithirr Elder Ella Woibo was aged just six when she became part of the Stolen Generation.

“It was a sad time, I cried my heart out,” the 88-year-old Hope Vale resident said.

She was placed in a girls dormitory, and shipped south during World War II to be used as slave labour at Woorabinda for seven years. She was 17 before she returned home.

On Sunday, surrounded by some of her 94 great grandchildren, she sees a “much brighter future”.

Mrs Woibo with husband Frank, 93, said she welcomed the 2008 national apology.

“We accept it and we all must get on with our lives,’’ she said.

Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Craig Crawford said Sunday’s anniversary paid respect to First Nations people who were forcibly removed as children from their family, culture, language, and community.

“The National Apology was a turning point in Australia’s postcolonial history,” he said.

PRE-AUTHORISATION MEETING FOR A NATIVE TITLE DETERMINATION AGREEMENT

Position Vacant HR and Administration Assistant

Southern Kaanju Native Title Group Cape York United Number 1 Native Title Claim (QUD673/2014) Cape York Land Council (CYLC) will hold a pre-authorisation meeting on Thursday 3 March 2022 in Cairns to discuss the proposed authorisation process for the Southern Kaanju Native Title Group to authorise the proposed s87A native title agreement for a determination of native title over the Southern Kaanju claim area (as shown on the map below). CYLC will also seek instructions on a proposed Indigenous Land Use Agreement (ILUA) and the remaining common boundary to be resolved with the neighbouring native title group, as set out below.

A determination of native title involves a decision of the Federal Court. Important things about a determination of native title include that the Federal Court determines (1) who holds native title, (2) what the native title rights are, (3) the area to which the native title rights apply after any determination is made, and (4) which corporation will represent the members of the determined native title group. Following the pre-authorisation meeting on Thursday 3 March 2022, there will be a meeting to authorise the s87A native title agreement on Wednesday 6 April 2022, where the Southern Kaanju Native Title Group will consider whether to authorise the proposed agreement for a determination of native title. If the Native Title Group decides in the affirmative, the determination will then be sought in the Federal Court. The Court has listed a hearing for a potential consent determination in the week of 4 July 2022.

Boundary Resolution There is an area of approximately 4 kilometres between Klondyke King Mine and the McIlwraith Range which must be resolved with the Ayapathu Native Title Group for the native title determination to go ahead in the week of 4 July 2022. CYLC will be seeking instructions from the Southern Kaanju Native Title Group in relation to this boundary at the meeting on 3 March 2022.

Indigenous Land Use Agreement (ILUA) CYLC will seek instruction in relation to an Indigenous Land Use Agreement for the purpose of industrial and residential development within the Coen township which has been proposed by Cook Shire Council at the meeting on 3 March 2022.

Important things about a determination of native title include that the Federal Court determines (1) who holds native title, (2) what the native title rights are, (3) the area to which the native title rights apply after any determination is made, and (4) which corporation will represent the members of the determined native title group.

Following the pre-authorisation meeting on Wednesday 2 March 2022, there will be a meeting to authorise the s87A native title agreement on Wednesday 23 March 2022, where the Ayapathu Native Title Group will consider whether to authorise the proposed agreement for a determination of native title. If the Native Title Group decides in the affirmative, the determination will then be sought in the Federal Court. The Court has listed a hearing for a potential consent determination in the week of 4 July 2022.

Boundary Resolution There is an area of approximately 4 kilometres between Klondyke King Mine and the McIlwraith Range which must be resolved with the Southern Kaanju Native Title Group for the native title determination to go ahead in the week of 4 July 2022. CYLC will be seeking instructions from the Ayapathu Native Title Group in relation to this boundary at the meeting on 2 March 2022.

Indigenous Land Use Agreement (ILUA) CYLC will seek instruction in relation to an ILUA for the purpose of industrial and residential development within the Coen township which has been proposed by Cook Shire Council at the meeting on 3 March 2022.

The meetings are open to all descendants by birth, or adoption in accordance with traditional law and custom, of one or more of the following apical ancestors:



SPORT IN BRIEF Medal win for Burton GRAHAM Burton relished the sunny conditions in Cooktown on Saturday to claim the February monthly medal.

The wily veteran fired a nett 62 at the Walker Bay golf course, beating his nearest rivals by four strokes.

Three players were tied on nett 66 and it was Jayde McGowan who claimed the runner-up gong on a countback, beating Mark Rolan and Jamie Dobson.

John McArthur rounded out the top five with a nett 67.

Burton also took home the $120 side bet, while the nearest to pins went to John McArthur on 2/11, Sam Godfre-Roberts on 14 and Paul Sperring on 9/18.

This week is a “No Driver” white tee stableford.

Due to increased player numbers the six hire carts will likely be booked out, so book ahead to avoid disappointment or grab a partner and consider playing in the afternoon.

In the Race to the Bay, Burton wisely used his double-up card on this double point event to sit on top of the leaderboard with a healthy 160-point lead.

Dobson is second with McArthur right behind in third.

Senior rugby league was last played in Cape York in 2019. This is a game between Napranum Bulldogs and the Weipa Raiders at Andoom Oval.

Narrow win for Head STEVE Head took a liking to the sunny conditions at Weipa last week to be the narrow winner of Wednesday Wackers.

Sixteen players took to the course at Carpentaria Golf Club and Head’s 47 off the stick on the back nine was enough to claim victory after his nett score ended up at 34.5.

Grant Crossley was runner-up by half a stroke.

Steve Wust had the nearest to pins on both 15 and 18, while Gary Head picked up the Bradman’s.

Small field victory DEREK Tata loves a small field and he took full advantage on Sunday morning when he beat six rivals at Weipa’s Dawn Busters golf competition.

The enigmatic Terry Oberleuter had the longest drive off the first tee and finished runner-up. Dave Sands picked up the gong for Hoffman’s.

THERE has been no senior rugby league in Cape York since 2019 but Robbie Moore hopes that changes this year.

The FNQ area manager hopes to reignite the Cape Cluster competition in 2022, starting with a carnival in Coen in May. “The interest hasn’t dropped off it’s just getting the teams and communities organised,” Moore said.

“The threat of COVID-19 was also a roadblock for rugby league.

“In the past, Queensland Rugby League has done just about everything to make the games happen.

“We’ve flown in referees, sports trainers and other people to run the cluster weekends.

“That just can’t happen anymore.

We are prepared to invest in clubs and communities and train them to the level that’s required, but we can’t continue

to fly personnel up to Cape York and put on the games. The teams need to be organised amongst themselves.”

Moore said there would be training courses held in the lead-up to the Coen gathering in May and asked clubs to contact him to register their interest in playing this year.

“We think we’ll get a team out of Coen, teams out of Weipa, Napranum and Lockhart River, and maybe sides out of Aurukun, Mapoon and Wujal.

“If Cooktown and Hope Vale are interested we can also get them involved in the competition.”

Moore said the Coen game would be used as an induction to kick off the season and then it would be up to teams to arrange fixtures.

“It might be Coen goes to Lockhart and Weipa plays Napranum locally.

“It doesn’t have to be a carnival, although that can help with numbers.”
