Clean renewable energy throws up new challenge AS countries around the globe push towards net zero emissions targets, new research has highlighted an area of environmental concern in the production of solar panels.

An Australian study has found that to reach net zero milestones, the world will need almost 60 times more solar power, the production of which could cause “concerning” levels of global warming unless steps to reduce emissions during the panel production process are taken.

Photovoltaic engineering researcher Alison Lennon said part of the problem was the emission-intensive production of aluminium, with solar panel components mainly comprised of aluminium frames, inverter casings, rooftop cells and mounts.

“The emissions that could be generated in producing that aluminium are really concerning,” she said.

However, Professor Lennon said that even if the solar panel production process continued using non-renewable energy sources, a move towards more solar energy would still be of benefit to the climate.

“There’s still benefit ... (even) having all the elements to build that solar without the green aluminium, there’s still a benefit,” she said.

“Australia is actually the largest producer of bauxite, and one of the largest producers of alumina – so there’s a real opportunity for Australia to play a big role in this growth of renewable energy.”

The study revealed that for the global community to reach net zero by 2050, about 60 terawatts of solar power along with 480 megatons of aluminium would be required.

Currently, there is 0.8 terawatts, or 800 gigawatts of solar available globally.

But if Australia could produce low-emissions aluminium, it would be a valuable export and manufacturing opportunity.

She said Australia had the upper hand over countries such as China when it came to greening aluminium production due to the location of our refineries.

“In China, where most of the aluminium is currently produced, it’s a little bit harder to do that because all their solar farms are way out west,” Professor Lennon said.

“There’s a lot of solar resources but their smelters and refineries tend to be on the east coast where it’s not as sunny.

“In order to convert their smelters and refineries ... they would have to build very large transmission lines from west to east.”

Professor Lennon said Australia had four smelters, including one in Tasmania which was hydro-powered and produced less than five tonnes of emissions per tonne of aluminium.

She said all of the mainland Australian smelters were pow-

ered by coal, producing “well over” 10 tonnes of carbon emissions per tonne of aluminium.

“That’s an awful lot of emissions to produce and it’s high because you need a lot of electricity to refine the alumina into aluminium.”

Rio Tinto last year committed to powering its aluminium assets with renewables by 2030, reducing its carbon emissions by 50 per cent by the same year.

The company is already studying the use of hydrogen to replace natural gas in the alumina refining process in central Queensland, while in Canada where Rio Tinto’s smelters are hydro-powered, it is commercialising a process to remove carbon emissions from the aluminium smelting process.

The company also signed a statement of co-operation with the Queensland government to establish renewable energy.

Rio Tinto aluminium chief executive Ivan Vella said the move showed the company’s commitment to making its longterm industrial assets greener.

“This should help create the industrial demand needed to develop a globally competitive green energy solution and lead to more processing and manu-

facturing in central Queensland,” Mr Vella said.

The company has said switching its Boyne Island and NSW-based Tomago smelters to renewables would require approximately 5 gigawatts of solar and wind power, as well as having a guaranteed alternative supply which could be from other energy sources.

Dr Nicholas Aberle from the Clean Energy Council said the study showed the value in traditional smelting transitioning to renewable energy sources, and that technology advances could reduce the need for aluminium in solar panels of the future.

“We are already seeing the emergence of thin-film and printable solar cell technology that would help avoid the challenges identified in this research,” he said.

Meanwhile, Smart Energy Council president Steve Blume said there was no cause for concern when it came to aluminium production specifically for solar.

He said solar panels were not in the top 10 uses of aluminium and were not predicted to be, even with increased demand for solar technology.

Tin mine’s rehabilitation providing jobs in region

NATIVE plants and a safe, usable site will eventually replace the abandoned Collingwood Tin mine site near Cooktown with a partnership between Traditional Owners and the state government.

Specialists from the Department of Resources have been working closely with the Jabalbina Yalanji Aboriginal Corporation on the $7.5 million project to make the site safe and usable again.

“It’s so important to have Traditional Owners involved in the process of returning the land to a natural state,” Member for Cook Cynthia Lui said.

“Work is progressing well to deliver a safe, terraced site and a stable and secure tailings dam revegetated with native plants.

“Importantly, the remediation work is expected to create up to 13 full-time jobs across the life of the project; part-time or shortterm work for an estimated 50 people; and additional flow-on work through local services and suppliers.

Ms Lui said the rehabilitation of the Collingwood Tin mine site was an example of the state government creating jobs.

“The on-site crew has been moving tonnes of tailings – the crushed rock and waste material left behind after minerals have been extracted,” she said.

“Once the tailings are reshaped, they will be capped, and the area topsoiled and revegetated with native plants from seeds that the Traditional Owners have collected locally.”

The former tin mine, 35km south of Cooktown, operated for three years from 2005 to 2008.

The operator went into liquidation in 2015, leaving the government to make the site safe.

Work to date has included shutting off a 200-metre-deep ventilation shaft and ensuring there are no uncontrolled releases of water into the Annan River catchment, which pro-

vides Cooktown’s water supply and feeds into the Great Barrier Marine Park.

A grate is installed at the underground mine entry to prevent public access, while still allowing access for animals, including the endangered large-eared horseshoe bat.

Other work has included the demolition and removal of the abandoned processing plant and equipment, remediation of the former drill core area and significant work on the high-voltage electricity network to maintain power to the JYAC Aboriginal Rangers office on site.

Work recommences later this month, with replanting scheduled for later this year and early 2023. The project is expected to be completed by June next year.

COVID-19 cases on rise but Cape

THE Cape and Torres Strait has more than 350 active cases of COVID-19 but health officials are relatively pleased with the region’s attitude in slowing the spread.

However, mask wearing and limiting travel is being encouraged in a bid to keep the virus from overwhelming health resources.

As of Monday morning, there were 357 active cases in the Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service region.

Significant increases have been recorded on Dauan and Badu islands in the Torres Strait.

Active case numbers are fluctuating as cases are discharged from their one-week quarantine and new cases come on.

All active cases within the region are being managed at home or other accommodation.

“A case admitted to Cairns Hospital from Cooktown remains active, however, their hospitalisation is for a condition unrelated to COVID,” said Bev Hamerton the chief executive of TCHHS. “To date, accounting for those who have been discharged from quarantine, the region has recorded 894 cases of COVID-19.

“We urge people to re-think their need to be out and about in the community.

“If you are planning on travelling across the region, consider whether or not this is essential.

“Unvaccinated people are 24 times more likely to be admitted to a Queensland intensive care unit than people who have had their booster shot.

“If you are unvaccinated, you are nine times more likely to end up in hospital than if you were

vaccinated and had received your booster shot.

“Also wear masks as directed, practice social distancing and good hygiene, including frequent washing of hands with sanitiser and get tested if you have symptoms.”

Symptoms include: fever, sore

throat, runny nose, cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, diarrhoea, vomiting, nausea or lack of taste or smell.

Testing is available at all health facilities through a combination of RATs and PCR tests, depending on individual requirements.

COVID-19 could reach our communities at any time.

Vaccination is our best defence.

“There is no issue with availability of RAT tests at any of our facilities,” Ms Hamerton said.

“Anyone presenting for testing at one of our facilities who has symptoms of COVID-19 will receive a rapid antigen test.

“Close contacts of a positive case will also receive a RAT on day six. If someone is a close contact and has symptoms, they will receive a RAT. Only where RATs are not available will someone be given a PCR.” Currently, 78 per cent of the eligible population aged 12 years and over in the TCHHS region is now fully vaccinated with two doses of vaccine and 93 per cent have had at least one dose.

“We have also delivered about 4027 booster vaccinations across the region and 724 children aged 5-11 have received their first dose of vaccine,” Ms Hamerton said.

Building a plan to prevent suicide AN important project is currently being undertaken in the Torres and Cape to develop a Suicide Prevention Community Action Plan for the region.

Last year, the team running this project spoke with many stakeholders who work in the Cape, including service providers, sector professionals and service personnel.

This year, the team are turning their attention to community members in the Torres and Cape to lend their voice for the development of a region-specific, Suicide Prevention Community Action Plan.

The project team are hoping to reach people who have lived experience of suicidal crisis or attempt, caring for someone through a suicide crisis, or have been bereaved by suicide to share their stories with us.

The stories of those with a lived experience will be used to directly inform the development of the Torres and Cape Community Action Plan – a community and sector endorsed path forward for coordinated suicide prevention activities across the region Lived experience perspective will provide critical insight for the development of this locally tailored and regionally relevant plan.

A lack of lived experience perspective will impact the success of this project which is why they need your help.

Why this Cape York coffee queen Known as the coffee queen of Weipa, ABBEY MARTIN loves her Cape York home, despite the distance from London. The 31-year-old explains to Cape York Weekly editor MATT NICHOLLS why she can’t wait to become an Australian citizen ...

HE might not sound like it with her prominent London accent, but Abbey Martin is a fair dinkum, true blue, dinki-di Australian.

The only thing she’s missing is the piece of paper to prove it.

Tomorrow, on Australia Day, Abbey will take the pledge and become a bona fide Aussie.

The Weipa resident’s journey to citizenship began in April 2014 with a holiday around the world.

She didn’t make it home.

Instead, she found a new one.

“I had finished university and had been working before I went to travel the world,” she said.

“I went to New Zealand, Australia, south-east Asia and India, before coming back to Australia.

“Australia is an amazing place.

“I love the weather and the laid back environment.”

The weather and a strapping young bloke called Toby was enough to lure Abbey back to Australia on a permanent basis.

Abbey and Toby met in a small town called Moulamein in New South Wales, not far from Swan Hill on the Victorian border.

“I was working in admin for a

“It was actually Toby’s home town, although he had left home and was just back visiting.

“We met in the pub, of course.”

travelling to Groote Eylandt, and they ended up catching up a few more times before Abbey continued her adventures.

When she came back to Australia from Asia, it was a no-brainer for her to move to Cairns.

“By then he was FIFO into Weipa,” Abbey said.

“We were in Cairns for a while and I was starting to get itchy feet – it was the longest place I’d stayed in for two years. I still wanted to travel around.”

But the tropical life grew on her and a hospitality job at Vivo in Palm Cove ended up changing her life forever.

can’t wait to be an Aussie citizen “I became a morning person because the job was a breakfast shift,” she said.

“I was watching the sun rise every morning and I would be home by one or two o’clock.

That’s what’s great about Australia – the sun gets up and you get up.”

The Cairns lifestyle agreed with her, too.

“Toby would be away for three weeks at a time but when he had days off we’d pack up the ute and go camping and fishing,” she said.

“In London I was working in a basement.

“Toby came home one day and said there was a job going with Rio Tinto and asked if I would be interested in moving to Weipa.

“I was keen for an adventure so we packed up the car.”

That was five years ago.

Almost immediately she picked up a job with Leah Pierotti on the Capeaccino coffee van.

After almost three years with Leah, the business was up for grabs when she decided to leave town, and Abbey was quick to snap it up.

“We had always openly discussed it (buying it when she left town) but she left a bit quicker than I was expecting,” Abbey said.

“We were looking at buying our first home in Weipa and then we had to put that money towards the business.”

But there are no regrets.

“Weipa has been great to me and I love it here,” she said.

“It’s a small town but it doesn’t have that small town syndrome.

“I was working on my own today and the amount of people who helped and looked after me just highlights how good this town is.”

Abbey said the local police officer in charge at Weipa, Sergeant Warren Flegg, even made her a coffee.

“We drink the same order and he knows that when he arrives I usually have my second coffee of the day,” she said.

“But I was on my own and Fleggy made me one.”

Abbey says Cape York life was filling the void of her travel bug.

“I feel like I’m still travelling and it’s great to get out in the Cape and go camping with the dogs and buggy,” she said.

“A town like this makes you feel like you’re on an adventure all of the time.”

Back in the UK, mum Helen is

not sure that’s such a great thing.

Abbey routinely sends her mum articles from Cape York Weekly and the stories about crocodile attacks and pythons attacking children certainly don’t go down well.

“Mum worries but in a nice way,” she said.

“She comes here every year ... until COVID hit.”

As for becoming an Australian citizen, there is no hesitation at all.

In fact, she was serving coffee at last year’s Australia Day celebrations and was telling all and sundry that she was hoping to become an official Aussie in a year’s time.

It’s not an easy process, either.

To become a permanent resident is expensive and involves a full medical check, while Abbey had to sit an exam last year to qualify to become an Australian.

She will do so at Kumrumja Park in Weipa tomorrow with Toby by her side and a couple of dozen other locals who are either receiving awards or becoming citizens.

Members of the public can’t attend this year due to COVID-19 protocols.

“It’s still going to be a special day,” she said.

“I’m probably going to get really emotional; I’ll probably cry.

“I’m just so excited. For me, this is my home.

“I have embraced Aussie life.

I respect this country and I’m so proud to be here and live here and carry on living here.”

From Prep to Year 12: dux winner praises her school

WESTERN Cape College’s dux of 2021 will head to university in Townsville this year with a dream of helping others in the future.

Jessica Stainkey did all of her schooling in Weipa and praised the remote school for providing the support required in her educational journey.

“I love Western Cape College and winning the dux was a goal of mine,” she said last week.

COVID-19 interrupted Jessica’s Year 11 studies more than her final year, although she did have to juggle Year 12 with the responsibilities of school captaincy.

“I feel like it didn’t get in the way of my studies – the school always made time for me to not miss out on class.”

The dedicated student also went the extra mile to ensure she didn’t finish her final year of school with disappointment.

In the school holidays before exams, Jessica flew to Cairns for

a maths workshops to sharpen her knowledge.

“The school paid for her flights but we funded the rest,” said proud mum Robyn, who also praised Western Cape College.

“The quality of the teaching in Weipa when it gets to the senior years is amazing.

“I’ve lived in Weipa for 30 years and a lot of parents baulk at the idea of sending their teenagers to school in Weipa.

“I think the students here are very well equipped.”

Jessica has been accepted into James Cook University where she will complete a Bachelor of Physiotherapy.

“I’ve always loved the medical field and science,” she said.

“I want to help people regain their strength.”

The graduate said she could see herself working in the hospital sector, rather than in private practice.

Making the trip south has been made easier on a couple of fronts.

Firstly, one of her best friends is already in Townsville and they’ll live together this year, while the cost of her course has been reduced as a result of Jessica winning a Dean’s Scholarship from JCU. “I didn’t apply for the scholarship it just appeared as an email,” she said.

“I’m really lucky and really appreciate JCU for that.”

Jessica paid tribute to some of her teachers, including Mr Shearer, Miss Harrison, Ms Bloomfield and Mrs Wilson for supporting her over the years.

“I had a lot of good teachers along the way,” she said.

THE federal government has released guidelines for round nine of the Remote Airstrip Upgrade Program which aims to enhances the safety and accessibility of aerodromes in remote and very remote areas of Australia.

Eligible owners or operators of existing aerodromes in remote or very remote areas of Australia can apply for a grant of between $5000 and $3 million under the program.

MP Warren Entsch said anyone who lives in a remote community understands how important local airstrips are to our way of life.

He said this additional funding would be welcome news for Cape York and Torres Strait communities.

“I encourage eligible owners and operators in Cape York and the Torres Strait to familiarise themselves with the program guidelines ahead of applications opening early next month,” the Member for Leichhardt said.

“Cape York and Torres Strait is home to some of the remotest communities in the nation and the local airstrip is quiet literally a lifeline to the outside world.

“They ensure the delivery of supplies and services, facilitate life-saving emergency flights and connect residents to regional centres.”

Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce said the next round would deliver up to $15 million in grants.

“Functioning airstrips are crucial for remote communities,” he said.

“The government is continuing to invest in the infrastructure these communities and their residents need and deserve.

“This extra $15 million builds on the $70 million we’ve already committed to support 340 remote airstrip upgrade projects.”

Applications open from Thursday, February 3 and close on Thursday, March 17 via the website www.business.gov.au

Student leaps hurdles to earn university pathway

COURTNEY Zeimer is not one for making excuses – so she was disappointed when surgery prevented her from sitting her Year 12 exams last year.

But the quietly-spoken teen isn’t going to let her medical condition stop her from achieving her goals.

Courtney has enrolled at QUT this year and will study a Bachelor of Science (Physics).

She admitted she isn’t sure what kind of career the degree will lead to, but hinted that she might work in the climate change sphere, perhaps in renewable energy.

This was no surprise to her principal Dan Tonon, who said she had a strong moral compass.

“She has a strong sense of social justice and always shows empathy for others,” he said.

Mr Tonon was thrilled that Courtney was able to continue her education at university after what had been a tough final year of secondary school.

Courtney suffered from a rare condition called brain AVM (arteriovenous malformation) and

she had surgery in September to remove a cyst from her brain.

While she has recovered well, she still had to miss her exams.

But her marks in previous assessments were taken into account to give her an ATAR score.

ing at Weipa, although this year she complemented her studies through the Cairns School of Distance Education.

Her hard work was rewarded when she applied for and was awarded a $5000 Charlie Bell Scholarship from McDonald’s.

The scholarship is a one-off grant that gives kids the chance to get their schooling or career back on track while they are recovering from a serious illness or injury.

Courtney said she was looking forward to her next big adventure in Brisbane.

“I’m excited. I wouldn’t say that I’m nervous,” she said.

“I have been to Brisbane a lot of times so I know my way around.”

Courtney paid tribute to her mum Julie for supporting her through her schooling and recent health battles.

NEWS IN BRIEF Generosity for Roy MORE than $15,000 has been raised for Cooktown computer guru Roy Roberts, who lost his house to a fire earlier the month.

As of Monday morning, the GoFundMe total was at $15,500.

The fundraiser received a boost from the Cooktown RSL, which pledged $5000.

Wet weather in Cape PARTS of Cape York received some big rain over the weekend.

At Kowanyama, 112mm was recorded up to 9am Saturday, while Cape Flattery had falls of 118mm, 72mm and 50mm over a three-day period.

Cooktown had a big day of 97mm with some localised flooding.

New councillor elected DAVID Jack won this month’s by-election for the vacant councillor position in the Kowanyama Aboriginal Shire Council.

Commissioner Pat Vidgen said two candidates nominated to contest the vacant councillor role.

Mr Jack defeated Leslie Gilbert with more than 65 per cent of the votes.

“149 Kowanyama electors voted on the Friday, and 166 on election day,” Mr Vidgen said.

Napranum by-election THE Electoral Commission of Queensland has announced a councillor by-election for the Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council on Saturday, February 19.

Commissioner Pat Vidgen said candidate nominations were now open for anyone interested in filling the position, which became vacant on January 10.

“There are about 540 enrolled voters in Napranum and a polling booth will be open for early voting from 9am to 6pm on Friday, February 18, and from 8am to 6pm on election day, Saturday, February 19,” Mr Vidgen said.

“Anyone who wants to be a candidate at this by-election must complete a candidate nomination form and lodge it by midday on Tuesday, January 25.”

Sandy said: “The sunsets at the back of the Gulflander Caravan Park at Normanton, in the Gulf of Carpentaria, are particularly stunning, as the red soil and fringing trees make for great photography, enhancing the sunsets. On Christmas Eve, 2020, the sunset and the lightning of an approaching storm looked spectacular! Lightning photography has always been of interest to me, so I was very lucky to have captured this amazing image of both the sunset and lightning, just being in the right place at the right time!” This week’s theme is Australia Day. Resting place a pivotal decision EARLIER this month, the Prime Minister and Minister for Indigenous Australians announced their government would build a National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Precinct.

The precinct will be known as “Ngurra”, a word meaning home, a place of belonging, inclusion.

The Ngurra precinct will encompass a new National Resting Place.

The Resting Place will serve as a site for the care of Ancestral Remains returning from collections in Australia and around the globe whose cultural groups are unknown and are unable to make the journey home to Country.

The National Resting Place will be unique in the world, incorporating aspects of a memorial, repository, educational facility and research institute, but transcending all of these.

For Indigenous people, it will provide an Indigenous-centred place to visit, care for and honour Ancestors.

The National Resting Place will also provide an opportunity for non-Indigenous Australians to reflect on the history and impact of their knowledge systems, laws, moral standards and practices in relation to Indigenous peoples.

The Ngurra Precinct has the potential to be transformative in assisting our nation to discover a new perspective on what it means to be Australian.

As Ken Wyatt is the first Indigenous person to occupy the position of Minister for Indigenous Australians, this is a significant legacy of his tenure.

The National Resting Place is also a culmination of the work by generations of Indigenous peoples to stop the theft of bodies and advocate for the repatriation of thousands of remains stored in institutions around the world so they can be returned home.

Why a National Resting Place for Ancestral Remains?

Over a period spanning more than 200 years, Indigenous remains were collected as trophies of empire, in the interest of science and anthropology, and as “curios” of a supposedly dying race.

mains were exhumed without the consent of their descendants, in practices that went against the laws and moral codes for the treatment of deceased Europeans.

Historical reasoning for the collection of Ancestral Remains in Australia include: “Discovery” From 1770 onwards, the collection of Aboriginal remains was informed by ideas aligned with science and “discovery”.

The collection and classification of people, plants and animals that occurred on expeditions of scientific discovery and empire expansion contributed to ideas of European “superiority”.

Imperialism Aboriginal bodies also became “trophies of empire”.

Leaders of First Nations’ resistance, such as the Pemulwuy and Yagan, were beheaded and their heads were sent to the United Kingdom.

First Nations peoples’ Ancestral Remains were displayed by some frontier families on mantlepieces or used as cranial sugar bowls and ashtrays. The perception of Ancestral Remains as “rare” also contributed to their appeal to collectors and their market value in auction

houses, where they were viewed as commodities.

“Racial science” The increase in collecting First Nations peoples’ remains from the 1850s was also propelled by the rise in racial “science”.

Overseas interest in Ancestral Remains stemmed largely from notions of a hierarchy of race, which perceived Indigenous Australians to be at or near the bottom of the racial order.

This mindset continued to cause harm throughout the 20th century.

Despite growing condemnation of racial “science”, collecting of Ancestral Remains continued after the second world war.

The post-war era In the wake of the second world war, atrocities committed in the name of science and eugenics reverberated throughout scientific institutions.

Collections of Ancestral Remains had been carefully classified before. But after the war, they were bundled together in crates and boxes.

This contributed to a further loss of the provenance and records of Ancestral Remains.

The DNA era From around the late 1980s, Ab-

original remains held in collections were defended on the grounds they were of scientific interest.

Breakthroughs in dating technologies offered the possibility of extracting scientific information about human evolution over longer timeframes, and the human genome project sought to provide a complete genetic blueprint of humanity.

Where earlier interest in Ancestral Remains sought to prove theories of evolution and racial hierarchy, scientists from the late 20th century argued their research would prove beneficial for the entire human race.

A key debate emerged in this period between some scientists and Indigenous people, who asserted their right to bury their ancestors.

Decolonisation and recognition By the 1970s, Aboriginal people were organising locally and nationally for land and a “rightful place” in the political life of the nation.

Independent Aboriginal organisations such as the since-disbanded Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC) and the Foundation for Aboriginal and Islander Research Action (FAIRA) were critical in advocating for the

return of Ancestral Remains. Calls for repatriation posed significant provocations to the history, role and purpose of collecting institutions. This led to the development of protocols and policies guiding repatriation in the 1980s.

The return of Ancestral Remains is now widespread, with many repatriations negotiated with community and family of origin.

However, many remains are yet to find their way home.

The precise number of Ancestral Remains in institutional and private collections has been difficult to determine.

Collections continue to be revealed, with recent information coming to light about Ancestral Remains in India and Russia, along with unknown numbers held in private collections around the world.

Recent research commissioned

by AIATSIS, and yet to be published, counted tens of thousand of remains awaiting return from public institutions in Australia and the world.

Ngurra’s National Resting Place will serve as an initial landing place for Ancestral Remains on their journey home.

The National Resting Place will support community-led research to achieve the identification and repatriation of these remains, aiding their return to Country where possible.

Removed Ancestral Remains are powerful reminders of the historical dehumanisation, objectification and commodification of Indigenous peoples.

The National Resting Place will enable this story to be more fully understood.

The story of the ideas and practices that informed the stealing of Indigenous bodies, as well as the long struggle by First Nations peoples to bring their Ancestors home, will finally gain national recognition through the Ngurra precinct.

The Western Cape Communities Co-Existence Agreement (WCCCA) is an Indigenous Land Use Agreement (ILUA) over the Rio Tinto mining lease areas of the Western Cape York region of Northern Queensland. The Agreement is between eleven Traditional Owner Groups, four Shire Councils (Aurukun, Napranum, Mapoon and New Mapoon), Rio Tinto, the Queensland State Government and the Cape York Land Council on behalf of the Native Title Parties.

The Western Cape Communities Trust (WCCT) assumes responsibility for the administration, investment, allocation and custody of funds sourced from Rio Tinto and the Queensland State Government under the WCCCA. Disbursements also occur through three linked Sub-Regional Trusts, and this structure reflects SubRegional Independence and decision making.

The Western Cape Communities Coordinating Committee (WCCCC) and its three Sub-Committees transparently monitor, implement and review the objectives of the WCCCA to ensure that all parties’ obligations under the agreement are met. The WCCT Office is the administration arm for all the Trusts and the WCCCC. It manages the overall business of the company including servicing, assisting and supporting the above entities.

Reporting to the Implementation Manager, the Implementation Officer is the primary contact point with the eleven Traditional Owner Groups, who are signatories to the WCCCA, and Rio Tinto. This position contributes to assisting with the monitoring and implementation of objectives under the WCCCA and Strategic Plan in the areas of Employment and Training, Cultural Heritage, Community Liaison, reporting and data collection and the facilitation of Aboriginal community participation in cultural, environment and heritage management at a local and regional level.

To be eligible for this position, you must have: • Completed a Year 10 level of education and be familiar with using computers and Microsoft Office • Hold a current ‘C’ Class Drivers Licence • Knowledge and experience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, society and culture and an understanding of relevant issues preferably in relation to the WCCCA region • Ability and willingness to travel to and work in remote communities • Trained in or demonstrated previous experience in Education and Training – tertiary qualifications in this area will be highly regarded but not essential • Good interpersonal skill and an ability to communicate effectively • Knowledge of the Western Cape Region and Traditional Owner Clan Groups within the ILUA

Cape bowlers shine at Qld titles THE future of lawn bowls in Cape York is bright if the performances of Corinne Stallan and Jonty Millard at the Junior State Championships is any indication.

Millard, from Weipa picked up a silver medal for his efforts in the fours, while Cooktown’s Stallan was picked in a 10-person squad that will be narrowed down to eight to take on NSW later this year.

The state championships were held in Toowoomba and the Cape York duo teamed up in the pairs, taking on some highly-ranked representative bowlers.

SPORT IN BRIEF Grant wins Wackers ROSS Craven had another blistering round at Wednedsay Wackers last week but his low handicap prevented him from winning back-to-back rounds.

Craven had 38 off the stick, but it was Grant Crossley who reigned supreme with a nett 33, beating Gary Head.

In a consolation, Craven had the two nearest to pins on the 7th and 9th.

Bradman’s went to Jim Lucas.

Jim claims Dawnies WILY veteran Jim Taylor found his best form at Weipa on Sunday morning to win the Dawnbusters Golf.

He beat Matt Fairall for the prize and picked up a nearest to pin.

Ross Craven had the longest drive, while Dillon Wonford rounded up the field and collected the Hoffman’s gong.

A reminder that anyone can play Dawnies by turning up on Sunday mornings.

Heavy rain? No worries WITH close to six inches of heavy rain falling on Cooktown’s Walker Bay golf course overnight and sporadically throughout Saturday’s white tee stableford event, the track showed its drainage wizardry to present itself in perfectly dry playing order.

This suited the eventual winner of the day Wal Welsh, who’s consistency in keeping the little white orb on the cut stuff proved too much for the chasing pack.

Wal’s 38 points was too good for Sam Godfrey-Roberts’ 36 points and John McArthur, also on 36 points.

Godfrey-Roberts, back from Victoria, scored the $160 birdie hole on the 10th.

The nearest to the pins went yet again to Graham Burton who claimed 2/11 and McArthur got the lollies on 9/18.

This week’s event is a Las Vegas teams event with high markers drawn from one hat and low markers drawn from another.

Tee off will be at 9am with the red tee course awaiting everyone’s best.

In the Race to the Bay, Jamie Dobson’s judicious use of the double up card sees him leading the pack, Ryan Sperring is second, while John McArthur also used a double up card to be third overall.

The Weipa Crocs were not the best team at the Goldfield Ashes but they had plenty of fun at the Charters Towers cricket carnival.

In honour of Meat Loaf, two out of three ain’t bad BATTLING hangovers, beer bongs made out of cricket bats and the odd fly, the Weipa Crocs won two of their three matches at the Goldfield Ashes on the weekend.

The carnival got off to a shaky start when Kurt Gane consumed his body weight in gin the night before the opening game and was nearly a late scratching.

Crocs stalwart Aaron Johnson has been to more Ashes carnivals than most and shook his head at Gane’s effort.

“Don’t go too hard too early,” the veteran said.

Lacking fit numbers cost the Crocs the opening game, but

they rallied on Saturday and Sunday to finish in the top 30 of the B2 division, which featured a massive 125 teams.

Some of the individual highlights included Tom McCorkell making 54 on day one – while Daniel “Skinny” Gane dropped five catches.

Aaron Johnson made a 50 and took four catches on Saturday, while a recovered Kurt Gane added 40-odd to the total.

Skinny made amends for his bad fielding performances on the last two with a couple of catches.

Unofficial team manager Clair Johnson said the Crocs came through largely unscathed, with only hangovers and chafe to report.
