PATIENT DEFIES ALL THE ODDS
Heroes perform miracle SOME quick-thinking and the right medical equipment and training has saved the life of a 59-yearold woman after she suffered a major heart attack on a Cape York cattle station. It took more than six hours to get Karryn Dolan from Wolverton Station to Cairns Hospital, but brilliant work in the minutes after her collapse proved to be the lifesaving factor. On a dark and humid December night, husband Peter put his wife on the back of the quad bike and rushed her to the house, where he knew that a defibrillator could be put to use. Wolverton’s Emma Jackson was quick to spring into action and with the help of Peter and some calm guidance from a Triple Zero operator, were able to perform CPR on Karryn. It took three shocks with the defib to get a pulse back. It took almost an hour to get Karryn breathing again. Even then, she wasn’t in a good way.
While all this was happening, an ambulance was rushing from Coen, trying to navigate a wet road and poor visibility. But paramedic Paul Spinks got there and managed to get Karryn in a condition where she could be transported back to Coen Airport, where an RFDS plane had been redeployed to meet her. Talk about drama. Neville Jackson even had to drive the ambulance so Paul could tend to Karryn in the back. RFDS doctor Rebecca Brady had to dodge moths and flying ants on the Coen tarmac to examine and treat Karryn, who was placed in an induced coma for the plane ride. By the time they arrived at Cairns Hospital, it was nearly 3am. Despite the efforts to keep her alive, doctors in Cairns didn’t think Karryn would make it. But she did – a true miracle.
