THIRTEEN years after alcohol was banned in Lockhart River, local residents in the Cape York community will be able to enjoy

a cold beer when the town’s social club opens next month.

In a move backed by the council and government leaders, Lockhart River will have a licensed venue with strict conditions.

The Lockhart River Social Club is due to open on Wednesday, December 1 and mayor Wayne Butcher hoped it would revitalise the community.

“The canteen closed in 2008 but

it hasn’t stopped alcohol coming into the community,” he said.

“For the past 13 years we have been dealing with binge drinking and sly grog. It hasn’t stopped crime in Lockhart.

“Hopefully the club will be a social hub where people can play darts or pool, have a meal and enjoy a drink in a controlled and safe environment.”

“The whole idea is around building a social environment for people to get together,” he said.

“Alcohol is just a small part of that and it’s important to teach our young people how to drink alcohol responsibly, because all they are doing now is binge drinking, especially wine.”

The mayor said prohibition

had created a black market for alcohol in all Cape York communities and binge drinking had become a by-product.

“It is destructive from a health perspective and we’ve already got enough health problems on our hands,” he said.

“In the time we’ve gone without a licensed venue, all our kids that turned 18 in that time have only experienced binge drinking, rather than consuming a few drinks in a responsible manner.”

Cr Butcher said he was not sure if the social club would

open its doors on December 1, with some fine tuning still to do, but hoped it would be a successful venture in time for the wet season.

“It could be a great thing for Lockhart River and we could set an example for other communities,” he said.

Lockhart River Ministerial Champion Mark Bailey said he supported the opening of the social club and the return of alcohol to the community.

“We are here to listen to the needs of the community and I

have strong faith in the mayor and the council to make this a successful transition,” he said.

“There will be limits on the amount of alcohol a person can consume and it will be midstrength, so I think there will be a lot of positives to come from it in the long run.”

Mr Bailey said he was impressed with the quality of the facility, located at the Lockhart River sports ground.

“The oval is getting resurfaced and it will end up being a great asset for Lockhart.”

PDR gets the thumbs up TRANSPORT and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey has given roadworkers along the Peninsula Developmental Road a big thumbs up after driving on Cape York’s unofficial highway last week.

Mr Bailey, the Ministerial Champion for Lockhart River, drove from the east coast to the PDR, then visited the site near the Aurukun turn-off, before making his way to Cairns.

He said the road was improving with every visit and tipped sealing works to be finished before Christmas.

“They are making great progress,” the Minister said of the 10km project between York Downs and Merluna Station.

“They are sprinting hard to beat the wet and I think they are going to make it.”

Mr Bailey also stopped to say g’day to workers building a bridge near Musgrave Roadhouse.

That work won’t beat the wet season, but is still making fast progress.

“I was really impressed with what I saw.”

COOK Shire mayor Peter Scott and two councillors have heard the concerns of residents living in the council’s smallest locality.

Around eight Portland Roads residents – or Iron Range if you want to be technical about the actual locality – attended a community forum last Tuesday to voice their concerns with the council representatives.

Councillors Peter Burns and Ross Logan joined Cr Scott in listening to their views.

Cook Shire CEO Linda Cardew and several other senior staff members were also meant to be in attendance, but ended up running late and missed the meeting (more on Page 20).

Long-time Portland Roads resident Greg Westcott said he was pleased the council had taken the time to listen to the concerns of residents.

“It didn’t start off all that well with the CEO and staff members not arriving on time, but in some ways that was a good thing because we could just talk openly,” he said.

“It was a good roll up and I think we had just about everyone who lives here in attendance.

“There are some other ratepayers here that live elsewhere and just visit.”

One of the hot topics was the desire for better water access in the area.

Locals are undecided about the best course of action, but some would like to see a wharf built at Portland Roads.

Mayor Peter Scott said it was unlikely the state government

would fund such a project, but said the council would back the locals if that’s what they wanted.

“We’ll lobby for it and throw our support behind it, but I don’t think you’ve got a very good chance,” he told the meeting.

Mr Westcott said he understood why, but said something needed to be done to improve access in what was a growing part of Cape York from both a residential and tourism perspective.

“Some people are keen on a

jetty and my personal opinion is a rock wall would be better suited, but I think we all agree that we need something better than what we have now,” the owner of Out Of The Blue cafe said.

“A rock wall might have less of an environmental impact.”

Re-establishing the Portland Roads Cape Weymouth Rural Fire Brigade was another topic for discussion, with staff from QFES in attendance to help provide advice.

“We haven’t had an AGM since 2017,” Mr Wescott said.

“As the ex-treasurer I still have an ancient passbook for $6000 which has never been spent.

“We’ll need to organise an AGM to be held as soon as possible so we can start again.”

Mr Westcott also raised the issue of Cook Shire canning plans to split the shire into divisions at the next election.

The council voted in 2019 to create wards to encourage a more geographically diverse group of councillors, but pulled the pin on that idea at last month’s general council meeting.

NATE Jawai’s Cairns Taipans were in Cape York last week as part of a pre-season camp involving the whole NBL squad.

The players spent three days in the Northern Peninsula Area, visiting a number of communities for cultural education and team-building activities.

Star forward Jawai, who grew up in Bamaga, was thrilled to introduce his teammates to his home community.

The Taipans also visited NPA State College and ran a series of clinics with local kids.

Update on PDR at public meeting CAPE York residents will get the chance to hear first hand about the future of the Peninsula Developmental Road at a public meeting next week.

Regional Development Australia Tropical North chair David Kempton, CEO Sonja Johnson, Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch and representatives from the federal Department of Infrastructure and Queensland Transport and Main Roads will travel to Weipa to share the latest on the PDR upgrade.

The event follows on from a meeting in Cooktown in June which updated the community on the outcomes of the Cape York Region Package Stage 1, which delivered $215.5 million to seal priority gravel sections of the PDR, $10 million for sealing works on the Endeavour Valley Road between

Cooktown and Hope Vale and $50.5 million for priority community infrastructure upgrades.

Stage 2 is a $237.5 million, fiveyear program of works to continue upgrading the PDR and other priority road infrastructure on Cape York.

Commencing in late 2020, the program was jointly-funded by the federal and state governments on an 80:20 basis, with the feds con-

tributing $190 million and the state contributing $47.5 million.

“The Cape York community are warmly invited to attend, either in person or online, the Cape York Regional Package Taskforce meeting,” Ms Johnson said.

“Transport and Main Roads will provide an update on Stage 2 including: • Social, economic, environmental impact assessment;

• The Archer River crossing; • The Torres and Cape Indigenous Council Alliance program of works including the Aurukun, Lockhart River and Pormpuraaw access roads; • First Nations training, employment and business opportunities.

“The leaders and staff will then open the floor for a question-andanswer session.”

As part of their visit to the region Mr Kempton, Ms Johnson and Mr Entsch will also visit SpaceOz’s Space Centre Australia site, located near the RAAF Scherger base, which is about 43km from Weipa.

Advanced design work has commenced on the multi-use spaceport which will be used as a satellite and rocket manufacture and launch facility.

“I am looking forward to viewing the site. The project once com-

pleted, will be a ground breaking facility for our region,” Mr Kempton said.

“This is an incredibly exciting project and pending a range of approvals, construction is slated to begin in mid-2022.

“It’s expected around 150 new jobs will be created during the construction phase of the project, leading to 300 permanent roles.

“With the continuing work on the PDR, which will drive tourism and so much else on the Cape, new entrants into the market like SpaceOz, and our ongoing work to secure funding for a new dam in Lakeland, the future is looking bright for the region.”

Tender called for new bridge

TENDERS are being called for a project to upgrade one of Cape York’s well-known waterway crossings.

Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch said the Archer River Crossing project was jointly funded by the federal and state governments as part of the $237.5 million Cape York Region Package Stage 2.

Mr Entsch said Stage 2 was all about improving safety and reliability of the critical and vital road network.

“Every wet season, the Peninsula Developmental Road is closed for long periods at Archer River when the current low-level crossing is inundated by the swollen river,” he said.

“When complete, the new crossing will reduce the average annual time of closure to less than two days, improving access for road users and improving connectivity for some of Queensland’s most remote communities.

“It will be safer for road users, which is a top priority.”

Queensland Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the successful tenderer would need to demonstrate a strong commitment to supporting local indigenous workforce and sub-contractors.

“As with all projects in Cape York, we want to ensure we are creating employment opportunities for locals and training opportunities which set people up for future longterm employment,” he said.

“As part of the tender assessment process, the department will assess contractors’ ability to deliver training and employment development prospects, and Indigenous economic opportunities, in partnership with the Traditional Owners of the area.

“Just this month I travelled along the PDR between Lockhart River and Cairns and was proud to meet so many locals working on the project and being an effective part of the Far North Queensland team.

“Thanks to the Palaszczuk government, the Cape is being completely transformed and it makes a huge difference driving along it after another big year of work.”

Cook MP Cynthia Lui said Stage 2 would see a further 55km of the PDR sealed.

“This road stretches for 527 kilometres between Laura and south of Weipa and keeps the many communities here in the Far North connected,” Ms Lui said.

“Once Stage 2 is complete, only 149km of the road will remain unsealed.”

Former CEO lands major role in Australian Army

LIEUTENANT Colonel Eileen Hall was last week appointed as the Australian Army’s first Command Cultural Advisor during a ceremony at Wujal Wujal.

A Bama woman and former CEO of the Wujal Wujal council, Lieutenant Colonel Hall has worked across many levels of state and local government as well as the not for profit and private sectors.

With her appointment to the Regional Force Surveillance Group, Lieutenant Colonel Hall will be responsible for providing consistent appropriate authoritative cultural advice, and building and maintaining relationships with interagency partners and Indigenous communities through Australia.

The RFSG provides a longrange surveillance capability

throughout northern Australia, covers 52 per cent of the Australian land mass, and encompasses hundreds of Indigenous communities.

Lieutenant Colonel Hall said that her appointment was a sign that the army was increasingly recognising and seeking out the skills and knowledge of Indigenous people.

“The appointment itself is amazing but it also signals that the army is now recognising the diversity in their ranks enhances their capability and that’s a big signal,” she said.

“I think they identified early, that because it has nearly 250odd different Indigenous nations and language groups nested within that area, they needed to look at something a bit more unique.”

Lieutenant Colonel Hall said the army had helped her build a

range of skills and provided an excellent career path for Indigenous people.

“I originally enlisted with 51st while I was still CEO at Wujal Wujal; that was back in August 2017. I guess you could say our community was struggling, a lot of the First Nation councils don’t have a revenue base, so in terms of training dollars you are limited,” she said.

“Joining the army helped me with not only those hard skills but the soft skills in terms of determination, confidence and being able to back yourself.”

She said it was also a twoway street, with the army benefitting from the generational knowledge of the land that Indigenous people have, particularly in terms of operating in remote areas for extended periods of time, which is what the RFSG specialises in.

“The recruitment and retention of first nations people in the army not only plays an important role in terms of closing the gap, but it also recognises that the army can’t be as lethal as it can be, unless it taps into the untapped knowledge that’s there,” she said.

Lieutenant Colonel Hall, who is now one of the highest ranked Indigenous soldiers in the army, also acknowledged the ongoing support she received.

“I want to thank everybody, my Elders, my colleagues in all the state, territory and federal government agencies, fellow soldiers – but particularly those families who have soldiers that are currently enlisted,” she said.

“I want to say thank you to them for their generosity of time and knowledge and say I’m so appreciative of all they have done.”

GM pedals PDR for a good cause IF you happened to be driving along the Peninsula Developmental Road in the early hours of Friday morning and came across a cyclist, this story will explain what was sure to have been a mystery.

Rio Tinto Weipa boss Michelle Elvy was riding from Aurukun to Weipa in a bid to raise both money and awareness for domestic violence.

She set off from Aurukun around sunset on Thursday and pedalled her way into Weipa just before 7am on Friday.

With support from her husband and riding mate Kelly Anderson, the bauxite general manager did it fairly comfortably, although admitted the corrugations were a little tough on both her and the bike.

REMEMBRANCE Day will be officially observed in Weipa and Cooktown this Thursday with RSL committee members in both towns encouraging the public to attend.

In Weipa, the service will commence at the Cenotaph in Memorial Square at 10.40am.

Weipa RSL sub branch president Lloyd Williams said this year’s service will see members of the 382 Expeditionary Combat Support Squadron who are on exercises at RAAF Base Scherger in attendance.

382 Squadron Wing Commander Alan Brown will also be giving an address at the ceremony.

Mr Williams encouraged all ex-servicemen and women to attend, as well as get involved in the Weipa RSL Sub Branch .

“That’s our biggest bug bear trying to get membership. The tricky part is that you know there are ex-servicemen in the area,” he said.

“On Anzac day they turn up with their medals and then they disappear again.

“We encourage any ex-servicemen and women to get involved.”

Remembrance Day in Cooktown will commence at Anzac Park on Charlotte Street at 10.45am.

RSL Cooktown sub branch secretary/ treasurer Jim Fay welcomed members of the public to attend and take part.

“The public is welcome to attend and just a reminder for RSL members to wear their medals,” he said.

“After the ceremony everyone is welcome to come back to the RSL Memorial Club for refreshments.

“We’ve got the school children coming to lay wreaths, some of them on behalf of World War I and World War II veterans.”

Contagious outbreak in Aurukun HEALTH authorities are managing a confirmed case in Aurukun of a highly contagious bacterial skin infection that can lead to kidney disease if left untreated.

Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service public health medical officer Dr Allison Hempenstall said a community-wide screening program for Acute PostStreptococcal Glomerulonephritis (APSGN) currently was under way at Aurukun.

The most at-risk group for APSGN is children.

“However, we are screening the entire community at Aurukun, totalling about 1300 residents” Dr Hempenstall said.

She said the screening program, which started last week, was being undertaken with the support of Tropical Public Health Services (Cairns), Apunipima Cape York Health Council and local authorities, and was expected to be completed this week.

Dr Hempenstall said, if untreated, APSGN could lead to more serious problems such as chronic

kidney problems, so the condition should never be ignored.

The condition is caused by a Group A Streptococcal bacterial infection, like Strep throat.

“Treatment is quite simple, through a single injection of antibiotics and, if necessary, medication to control blood pressure,” Dr Hempenstall said.

Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch said the funding for the Torres Shire’s project ensured the ongoing recognition of our Australian servicemen and women.

He said the funding would be used to construct an interpretive trail to commemorate Australia’s Torres Strait Islanders during the Second World War.

“It is important that the service and sacrifice of our local veterans is recognised and remembered through these community initiatives,” Mr Entsch said last week.

“The Torres Strait has a very rich and proud service history, and the region is home to many of our veterans.

The green group runs from 7.50am to 3.30pm and having it at Pebbles Playgroup is part of a seamless transition for a lot of youngsters growing up in Weipa.

“They know Miss Jane from Pebbles and then she’s here with us at kindy on Thursdays and Friday,” Ms Millard said.

“A lot of our program is about combining learning and playing and I think the 18 kids who are in green group would say they get to do a lot of both.”

Twiggy Forrest becomes a ratepayer after $42m buy MINING and cattle magnate Andrew “Twiggy” Forrest has become one of Cook Shire’s biggest ratepayers after he paid $42 million for Lizard Island.

Mr Forrest and his wife Nicola’s private investment company Tattarang splashed $42 million for the Great Barrier Reef resort.

It comes hot on the heels of the company’s acquisition of celebrity Byron retreat Gaia, which transacted last month for $30 million.

Tattarang declined to comment on the Lizard Island deal, but the vendor, Hong Kong Stock Exchange-listed SEA Group, announced the deal in an investor statement.

“The buyer has agreed to purchase the property located at Lizard Island, Queensland, Australia at an aggregate consideration of $42 million in cash,” the statement said.

“The property comprises three parcels of land located at Lizard Island ... with an aggregate site area of approximately 2005ha held under the head leases which will expire on 30 September 2050.”

All property on Lizard Island is considered to be in the Cook Shire Council boundary.

Mayor Peter Scott said he didn’t know how much the council received in rates, but “I couldn’t tell

you anyway”. He said he hoped the investment from Mr Forrest would bring more people to Lizard Island and see people charter planes to and from Cooktown.

num, and the sale is conditional on this, as well as the approval from the Queensland government to transfer the head leases to Tattarang.

Lizard Island opened as a resort in 1975 and lures deep-pock-

eted patrons with the appeal of 24 beaches, luxury accommodation and the vivid colours of the reef.

Lizard Island was known as Dyiigurra to the Dingaal First Nations’ people and was regarded as a sacred place.

By-election for division of NPARC

CANDIDATE nominations are now open for Division 5 councillor for the Northern Peninsula Area Regional Council following the creation of a vacancy on October 20.

ECQ Commissioner Pat Vidgen said election day would be on Saturday, December 4, with early voting starting on November 29.

“Anyone interested in becoming a candidate for Division 5 must have completed and lodged their nomination form with the Returning Officer or the ECQ by noon on November 15,” he said.

“Nomination forms and information about becoming a candidate are available on the ECQ’s website.”

Mr Vidgen said it was important not to leave nominating until the last minute as there were important requirements to meet.

“A non-endorsed candidate must be nominated by at least six electors who are enrolled in Division 5 of the NPARC. “A candidate endorsed by a registered political party must be nominated by the registered officer of the party.

“There is also a deposit of $250 to be paid and all candidates are required to complete mandatory online training.”

Popular voucher program returns

A PROGRAM that injected almost $150,000 into the Weipa economy will return this Christmas with overwhelming support.

At last week’s Western Cape Chamber of Commerce AGM, it was revealed that Rio Tinto Weipa would bring back its Christmas voucher scheme for employees and tier one contractors.

The program was introduced last year to help alleviate the cancellation of Christmas parties due to the pandemic.

Rio Tinto has once again put the end-ofyear festivities on the backburner and will instead give employees a $100 voucher, which can be spent locally.

Re-elected Chamber president Vance Wallin applauded the move.

“This was a great benefit to the local economy as all the money was spent in town and gave the retail sector a much-needed boost after a tough year,” he said.

“While this year was a lot better for the businesses of Weipa in terms of dealing with the pandemic, a lot of retailers are still trying to catch up from last year.

“The Chamber of Commerce has been a big supporter of this program and we’ll be administering it again on behalf of Rio Tinto, which means we get a small commission for the administration work.”

The Western Cape Chamber of Commerce AGM was a low-key event with around 20 in attendance.

Mr Wallin was re-elected as president,

while Dave Donald was voted in as vicepresident. Jay Murray continues as treasurer and Matt Nicholls remains secretary.

After the AGM, Glencore’s Aurukun Bauxite Project director Julian Farrugia gave an update on the progress of the potential new mine south of Amrun.

He said there were positive steps forward in 2021 and believed a decision would be made on whether to mine the site in the back half of 2022.

“There are still a few boxes to tick with environmental approvals and Traditional Owner agreements,” he said.

“But we’re confident we’re moving in a positive direction.”

Sea Swift’s customer service manager Ben Hemphill also gave an update about the progress of its new vessel, the Newcastle Bay II, which should be in the hands of the shipping company early next year.

“Once we get it, we have to learn how to use it and train our staff,” he said.

“We expect it will come online around the middle of next year and it should make a positive difference to our service, especially to Weipa.”

Because of the delay in getting its new ship, Mr Hemphill warned that Sea Swift could continue to have supply issues in the wet season.

“We’re doing all we can in advance to prepare our team and our customers, but we encourage anyone with a special order or with urgent freight to contact us in advance if possible, so we can help you,” he said.

Call for Cape to get more support

THE managers of Piccaninny Plains believe more resources should be available to help fight wild fires in Cape York.

Speaking to Cape York Weekly after their property was lit up by an arsonist late last month, Sally Gray said they had almost no help to manage the blaze.

In terms of equipment, a bulldozer could make fire breaks and a water tank on the back of a ute could be used for some extinguishing.

Ms Gray, who manages Piccaninny with partner Graham Woods, said the state government should

consider utilising aerial resources to control fires in Cape York.

“The cost is astronomical and the damage to the environment is significant,” she said.

“While there may not be a serious risk to life or dwellings, the damage these fires can cause is unmeasurable.”

Piccaninny is owned by the Australian Wildlife Conservancy and has a diverse ecosystem.

Spanning more than 160,000 hectares, the property boasts 67 different mammals, 265 birds, 77 reptiles and 26 amphibians.

There are 611 different plant species – seven of which are considered to be threatened.

Fire bugs in Cape York destroyed more than 100,000 acres of land across Piccaninny and Wolverton Station.

Weipa tradies claim TAFE awards WEIPA automotive mechanic Nevi Pratt was the toast of the trade community after claiming two trophies at the TAFE Queensland Cairns Trade Excellence Awards.

The annual event shines a spotlight on the region’s best apprentices and trade students, recognising their dedication to their training and industry.

Thirteen award categories were announced with Mr Pratt claiming the Automotive Apprentice of the Year Award and the coveted Outstanding Apprentice of the Year Award.

Mr Pratt, who works at Diesel Field Services in Weipa, said his passion for his trade began at an early age.

“I’ve always had a fascination with cars and growing up I loved tinkering with cars and machinery,” he said.

“I enjoy travelling to Cairns for automotive training and interacting with other apprentices who are doing the same thing.

“I’m constantly learning in my trade and I like that I can use what I’ve learned to help my family, friends and customers at work.”

Mr Pratt, who was nominated for the awards by his employer, was singled out for his positive attitude, superior standard of work and leadership skills.

Drama aplenty as Cooktown puts

THERE’S never a dull moment at the Cooktown races.

It seems that every year there’s some kind of drama and Saturday was no different.

A hot, sunny day soon turned sour as misty rain, then heavy rain, took over for an hour, before the sun came out again for the second half of the meeting.

But the real drama happened during race three, when it became apparent after the finish that the on-course ambulance had flipped on its side on the western side of the track.

Both Queensland Ambulance Service staff were OK, although a little shaken.

At this point, it appeared the rest of the race meeting was in doubt.

With the ambulance still on its side and unable to be used even after volunteers returned it to an upright position, officials had to scramble to get the green light to continue racing.

Paramedics were able to use a

civilian vehicle for the remainder of the meeting, with an ambulance vehicle in town put on-call, while the original wagon sat upright on the infield, full of equipment.

The unpredictable nature of the Cooktown races is what brings hundreds back to the track every November.

More than a thousand people were trackside for this year’s Cup meeting, with the mix around 5050 between locals and visitors.

Fashions on the field was highly competitive, although the juniors copped the brunt of the wet weather as rain belted down during the youth parade.

For the senior fillies, they were able to show off their dresses and fascinators in glorious sunshine.

Sally Eales, always thereabouts in the fashion stakes, was crowned best dressed local lady.

As for the on-course action, the 2021 Cooktown Cup was won by He’s Wow Class for Tolga trainer Janel Ryan, who had three runners in the feature race.

More vaccination clinics in region

WITH pressure now mounting on Cape York to get vaccinated before borders are opened, the Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service is pulling out all stops to make sure locals can get jabbed this month.

An additional 22 vaccination clinics will be provided through to the end of November right across the Torres Strait and Cape York.

TCHHS chief executive Bev Hamerton said the 22 new clinics were in addition to a further nine new clinics announced last week, and 23 extra clinics announced in early September.

“That’s 54 new clinics added just since September to what was already a very extensive vaccination rollout schedule right across our region,” she said.

“We are especially targeting communities where the vaccination response has not been as great as hoped.

“We will continue to add further vaccination clinics as we progress into December.

“From this week, we have six separate vaccination teams crisscrossing our region to deliver our clinics – up from four teams previously. This will increase to nine teams by the end of November and then 12 teams as we move into December.

“We are providing multiple opportunities for our communities to be vaccinated and there is no ex-

“The longer you leave off being vaccinated, or completing your vaccination schedule with a second dose if you have already had a first dose, the more likely it is that you will not be fully protected by the time the borders open on December 17.

“Torres Strait and Cape York residents can check the ongoing vaccination clinic rollout schedule on the Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service website.

“If there are no upcoming clinics in your area, all you have to do

is go on the health service website and fill in a form to register your interest in being vaccinated and a vaccination will be arranged for you,” she said.

“You can also call us on (07) 3497 3442 or speak to your local health facility to arrange.’’

Ms Hamerton said last week, the health service delivered vaccination clinics at Thursday Island, Hope Vale and Erub Island.

“We also delivered an extra clinic at Aurukun, which included door-to-door visits in that community,” she said.

“In addition, the Royal Flying Doctor Service also offered vaccinations during their visiting medical clinics this week at Coen, Lockhart River and Kowanyama.’’

Ms Hamerton said this week, the health service would be delivering walk-in clinics at Aurukun, Wujal Wujal, Mapoon, Umagico, Kowanyama, Injinoo, Napranum, New Mapoon, Laura and Seisia.

“And the RFDS will continue offering vaccinations during their visiting clinics at Coen, Lockhart River, Pormpuraaw and Kowanyama,” the CEO said.

To date in the Torres Strait, 70 per cent of the eligible population aged 12 years and over has received a first dose of vaccine through the health service and 58

per cent of people are fully vaccinated with both doses.

Cape York has 57 per cent of the total estimated eligible population aged 12 years and over who have received their first dose of vaccine through the TCHHS vaccination program alone, with 46 per cent now fully vaccinated.

In the NPA, 44 per cent of the eligible population has received the first dose of a COVID-19 vaccination so far, with 36 per cent fully vaccinated.

Across the health service as a whole, about 48.5 per cent of the eligible population aged 12 years and over is now fully vaccinated with two doses of vaccine, which is well below the 90 per cent target set by the state government.

OU need a little luck if you want to have a great Melbourne Cup day and some of us were luckier than others last Tuesday.

While punters who backed Verry Elleegant were rejoicing, Cook Shire Council CEO Linda Cardew was trying to find a way to erase the day from memory.

You see, there was an important public meeting at Portland Roads on Tuesday and the CEO didn’t quite make it on time.

Those who know the whole story are remaining tight-lipped, but our sources suggest that the CEO might have made a wrong turn and ended up at Bramwell Station, rather than the little hamlet north of Lockhart River.

Word is that mayor Peter Scott and councillors Ross Logan and Peter Burns made the trip up to Lockhart River on Monday and stayed in Portland Roads that night.

The CEO and other council staff were in another part of the Cape and stayed in Weipa.

They did the right thing and got up at the crack of dawn to make the drive from Weipa to Portland Roads, but must have made a wrong turn to end up more than 200km off course.

I know this will cause a stir amongst a certain ratepayers group in Cooktown, but I’m writing this to put a light-hearted spin on it because we’ve all taken a wrong turn at some point.

I’m reliably told that the CEO and staff were extremely embarrassed by the mix-up.

When Greg Westcott rang me a week prior to the meeting to invite me along, I was keen as mustard to attend.

It’s simply un-Australian to hold any kind of important event on Melbourne Cup day.

I spent the afternoon at the Albatross Bay Resort as MC of the Cup luncheon.

I didn’t back the winner of the Cup, but I wasn’t disappointed with the result. What a great mare she is. qqqq RACING fever was sky high this week and I made the long drive from Weipa to Cooktown to be at the annual Cup meeting.

It’s always a special day on the calendar and this year did not disappoint.

I nearly ended up on the wrong side of the law, too.

When the ambulance rolled over during race three, I waited until the track was clear and made a dash through the in-field to get pictures.

An overzealous constable didn’t like the fact I was there – even though no one was hurt and

there was nothing to investigate – and ordered me to leave.

When I temporarily refused in order to get the pictures I was after, he demanded my details and threatened to charge me.

I’m not going to run down the police based off one incident, because I’ve been covering events for almost two decades and have never had that kind of treatment before.

Perhaps a quiet word from the boss might remind the young man that journalists have a job to do.

After all, it looked like that ambulance incident could cause the race meeting to be called off.

Surely that’s newsworthy? qqqq A COUPLE of big names made a short appearance at the Cooktown races.

Cairns Taipans stars Nate Jawai and Scott Machado dropped in to have a punt and a drink on their way back from Bamaga.

Jawai is a Cape York icon and drew plenty of attention.

He would have gladly spoken to Cape York Weekly if not for the stupidity of Taipans club president Troy Stone.

Rather than embrace local

media and a bit more coverage for his star players, he told this reporter to “piss off”.

A class act. qqqq A NEW servo isn’t usually something to get excited about, but it must be said the new-look Weipa Servicentre in Rocky Point is worth the look.

With another stage to open in a few more weeks, it looks to be a great asset for the community as it brings a new line of produce to town.

As manager Maddison Reinhardt said to me: “Watch this space.” qqqq FINALLY, hat’s off to Wayne Butcher and the Lockhart River council for bringing back the social club.

This is something missing in a lot of communities and is not just about alcohol.

The ability to have a meal out with your family, watch the footy and play a game of pool is a favourite pastime for a lot of Australians and something many Cape York residents are denied.

I wish them well and I hope it becomes a success that is mirrored elsewhere in our region.

Weipa parkrun features in book

WEIPA’S community running event, known as parkrun, will feature in a new book set to be released this week.

On Every Saturday, a new book about the parkrun community in Australia by author David Crook, will showcase the Weipa parkrun as one of 32 Australian events featured in the book, published by Booktopia.

Every Saturday morning, tens of thousands of Australians participate in the community-based, volunteer-led, five-kilometre phenomenon called parkrun.

Everyone is welcome to walk, jog, run, spectate or volunteer, and it’s free.

Weipa’s first parkrun was held in July 2016 and it was the 180th parkrun to be established in Australia.

To date it has held 234 events and averages 40 participants per week.

Event director Rose Robins told Crook that the Weipa parkrun attracted a diverse group of people.

“We have lots of walkers, which is fantastic, and lots of kids,” she said.

Sam McCready, who moved to Weipa with his wife Louise and son Julian about three years ago, said parkrun was a great

way to meet new people, keep fit and challenge yourself.

“We saw it as a good social event and a good way to get out and meet people. It’s got a really good community and you’ll often be there after the run having a bit of a yarn and a coffee,” he said.

“It’s a bit of a challenge as well, there are a couple of pretty fast runners which always keep you honest.”

He said he is excited to see Weipa’s parkrun feature in the book and he hopes it will encourage more people to join the fun.

“We really encourage new starters, there is no barrier to entry, people can walk it if they want,” he said.

On Every Saturday celebrates Australia’s first 10 parkrun years. It outlines parkrun’s history, from its start in London in 2004, to its presence in 22 countries today.

It has profiles of parkruns from across Australia and highlights the people and stories behind the events as well as the sometimes life-changing impact of parkrun.

The author David Crook is a self-described “mid-life crisis runner” whose parkrun experience began in Worcestershire UK in 2018, and he is now a North Sydney parkrun regular.

Exciting speedster off to city after eye-catching win

LARGER-than-life trainer Ricky Ludwig will jump on a plane to Brisbane next month and cheer on his boom galloper Tycoon Thunder after he recorded his eighth win of the year at Cooktown on Saturday.

The five-year-old was an impressive winner of the Yarralind Park-sponsored Country Stampede Qualifier (1000m) and Ludwig said he had no choice but to take him south for the $75,000 final.

“He had to win today and win pretty comfortably for me to consider it,” said Ludwig, who trains just a couple of horses out of Tolga.

“I thought he would win today – we didn’t come up to Cooktown to run second – but I wanted him to do it comfortably.”

The son of Written Tycoon had no intention of leading, but found himself in front early after jumping well from the barriers.

Headed in running, jockey Frank Edwards used the inside rail to his advantage and kicked up to hold the fence and broke away approaching the home bend.

The senior hoop didn’t need to use the persuader in the closing stages and he won comfortably by a half-length, with second favourite Dream I Can making a late charge after getting too far back in the run.

The veteran trainer, who has one of the best strike rates in the Far North, said he had been reluctant to send Tycoon Thunder to the Country Stampede Final, but only because of the timing.

“He’s been up for a long, long time,” Ludwig said.

“I got him at the start of the year and (since April) he’s had 12 starts,

which is a lot. But he’s had eight wins and deserves to have a crack in the city.”

All eight wins have come with Edwards in the saddle.

In his other four starts, the horse was beaten with other jockeys on board.

“For some reason he loves Frank and I think Frank loves him,” said Ludwig, who was hoping the jockey would shout him a flight to Brisbane in return for sending the horse to Doomben.

Edwards thought it should be the other way around.

pay for my flight – hopefully business class,” the hoop said with a smile.

Edwards has ridden in the big smoke before, but not for many, many years.

The same can be said of Ludwig, who hasn’t saddled up a city runner for more than a decade.

He said he wished the Country Stampede series was around for his retired star Windmill Lane, who won a number of big sprint races in North Queensland.

“He was a better horse and would have killed them down there,” Ludwig said.

Maiden no more after 56 starts

A HORSE with 55 starts to its name managed to win its first career race at Cooktown on Saturday, ending a drought that started in Warrnambool four years ago.

The Jenny Ball-trained Kid Mac had won more than $70,000 in prizemoney before arriving in Mareeba, but had yet to cross the line in front.

That changed at Cooktown when Shane Pawsey produced a stellar ride in the $10,800 maiden to beat Artimo by a nose on the line.

The seven-year-old gelding is 50 per cent owned by Ball and the rest scattered among owners from Mareeba and the Far North.

One of the part-owners is Greg Williams, the former Weipa resident who now owns the Cape Gateway Motel in Mareeba.

“Greg didn’t want to buy into him at the start,” said Ball with a cheeky smile.

“He’ll be happy now. He’s just paid for himself with that win.”

Under Racing Queensland rules, Kid Mac will be eligible for a Class B Handicap at his next start and then a Class 1 race following that.

“We’ll just take it one race at a time but we’ll try and go through the grades,” said Ball, who was once a former champion jockey on the Tablelands.

“Hopefully there’s a race for him at Mareeba on Boxing Day.” Kid Mac’s record now reads 56 starts for one win, six seconds and nine thirds.

A SOFT lead in front was just the ticket for jockey Scott Sheargold as he steered He’s Wow Class from start to finish in Saturday’s Cooktown Cup (1760m).

As one of three runners for the Janel and Ronnie Ryan stable, the $2.60 favourite was well backed late in betting and won comfortably in the small field.

In winning, the five-year-old gelding booked a spot in the rich Country Cups Challenge final in Brisbane next month, but he’ll most likely be resting in a lush paddock when the race is run and won at Doomben.

“When we got him he wasn’t in the greatest condition so we’ve had to look after him a bit,” Janel Ryan said on Sunday.

“He will go for a spell and we’ll bring him back next year and look

at trying to win a few more Cups with him.”

He’s Wow Class was previously trained by Jared Wehlow out of Rockhampton and although he won at Mackay in July and saluted in this year’s Mareeba Cup, the former Victorian was unable to meet lofty expectations.

Now in the care of the Ryans on the Tablelands, connections hope the gelding might find his best form in the care of one of the most in-form stables in the Far North.

Saturday’s win was the fifth Cup win for the Ryan team this year, having won the Banana Cup at Innisfail, as well as the Cairns, Gordonvale and Atherton features.

“It was our first Cooktown Cup win and it’s one we’ve been chasing for a while,” Janel said.

“We love racing in the bush.”

Macipenko was a two-length winner of the Cook Shire Council/Seaview Motel Class 2 Handicap on Saturday.

Georgetown trainer finishes 2021 on high note

THIS time last year, Athol Ryan was in hospital with severe facial injuries after an innocuous incident while preparing to gallop a horse at Mount Garnet.

The veteran trainer hadn’t even made it onto the racecourse when the horse reared and fell on top of him, resulting in a trip to Atherton Hospital, followed by an ambulance ride down the Gillies Range.

Complications in his recovery forced the Georgetown resident to miss months of work, but once he was given the all-clear to resume in February, it didn’t take him long to get back on the horse.

It proved well worth it, with 2021 bringing a massive eight winners for the stable, three more than his 2020 tally.

“When you’ve got a horse like Macipenko it keeps you going,”

he said of the horse that has now won four races this year.

While seven winners might not seem like a lot, it’s not bad considering Ryan only has a few horses in work at any one time and has to travel more than 300km one-way for just about every race meeting.

670km to Cooktown for the Cup meeting and were handsomely rewarded when they returned with two winners.

Both ridden by Lacey Morrison, the double started with the stable star Macipenko.

The five-year-old gelding hadn’t won a race when he landed in Georgetown, but has now four to his name after previous victories at Oak Park, Mareeba and Atherton.

Sent out a $1.80 favourite in the Class 2 Handicap (1290m), the bold chestnut looked the winner a long way from home and saluted by two lengths.

“I was pretty confident he would run a big race and be hard to beat,” the trainer said.

“I was a bit more shocked about the second horse because I thought the topweight would be hard to beat.”

The Ryan-Morrison combina-

tion backed it up with Red Denaro in the Benchmark 60 (1400m).

Morrison sent the $2.70 elect straight to the front from barrier one and he was never headed, scoring while being eased down near the line.

A beaming Ryan said he was thrilled the decision to keep his horses in work had paid off.

“We normally finish up a little bit earlier because it gets really hot and there aren’t a lot of meetings for us in the back end of the year,” he said.

“But the horses were going well and there were the right races here for us so we decided to make the trip.”

The closest track to Georgetown is Einasleigh at 170km, but the club opted to sit out 2021 due to uncertainty around COVID-19.

Considered one of the best horsemen in the Far North, Ryan rides all of his horses in track-

work at the beaten-up Georgetown track, which hasn’t staged a race meeting for decades.

The Ergon Energy worker is used to travelling vast distances for maintenance on electrical lines throughout the Gulf country and usually stables his horses at Mount Garnet overnight before heading to race meetings.

This time he stayed in Tolga on Friday night before coming up to Cooktown.

Ryan said he had no hesitation in getting back in the saddle after the fall, which he described as a freak accident.

“Because we weren’t doing fast work it was OK (for me),” he said.

“We were just walking out on to the track and the horse got spooked by something and I ended up underneath it.

“I wasn’t worried about getting back on again.”

SPORT IN BRIEF Steve finds form VETERAN Wednesday Wackers organiser Steve Head is by no means a bad golfer, but for some reason doesn’t get his name in the winners’ list all that often.

That changed last week when he shot 45 off the stick to have a nett 29.5 to claim the cash.

He beat Scott Triffit by 3.5 strokes on the back nine.

No one found the green on 15, while Randall O’Neill was nearest to pin on the 18th. Rob Richardson picked up the Bradman’s prize.

Big win for McGowan THE Untouchables (as in untouched fairways or greens) from last week gained a few extra members at Cooktown on Saturday with another very poor performance from 99.9 per cent of the field.

The only shining light was Jayde McGowan, who despite his limited game time this season, decimated the field in winning the red tee stableford with a dominant 41-point win.

He was 10 points the better of second placed Steve Butler, while third was another limited gamer in Ben Sperring.

Nearest to the pins went to Sam Godfrey Roberts 2/11, McGowan 14 and Chris Hatton 9/18. This week’s event is a white tee stableford.

In the FNQ Insurance Brokers Race to the Bay, Steve Butler still holds the lead, but with McGowan still having a Super Up to play and being in awesome form, everyone is now looking over their shoulders at Jayde, who jumped from 10th to 4th with 1240 points.

This puts him 40 points behind Rick Butler and well within striking distance of the current leader.

The golf was a little bit serious at times but mostly brought plenty of laughter.

Good time had by all at Dawnies championships

Stan’s the man CARPENTARIA Golf Club celebrated its monthly medal winners on Saturday with the annual Medal of Medalists event.

Stan Cardelli took first prize with a nett 71, beating Matt Byrne by four strokes.

In the non-qualifier event, Warren Brewer had 70 to beat Alan Wyness by two shots.
