Telstra fails ... again

MOBILE phone services went down in Coen, Laura and Lakeland last week, prompting criticism of Telstra ahead of the wet season, when telecommunications struggle to cope with the heavy rainfall.

Travellers were left with no mobile reception between Cooktown and Weipa as a result of the outage,

which Telstra said lasted around 30 hours.

“On Tuesday there was a technical issue at the Freshwater Telephone Exchange, causing a loss of 3G and 4G Telstra mobile coverage at a number of locations,” Telstra regional general manager Rachel Cliffe said.

“A new part was required and was delivered to the site the next

day, with Telstra technicians restoring services around lunchtime.

“Telstra apologises to those customers impacted during this time and will keep an eye on the site to make sure it continues to operate properly.”

Cooktown customers have also been complaining about slow 4G speeds, an issue Telstra says it is aware of.

“Telstra currently has three mobile base stations in Cooktown but we are aware that Telstra 3G and 4G mobile services are running slower than usual at the moment,” Ms Cliffe said.

“The main reason is increased demand on our network due to the high level of tourists in the area.

“We are currently planning upgrades for some existing sites and

also adding a new small cell base station at the Cooktown Hospital.

“This should improve coverage and capacity in the area.

“Some community consultation has already occurred and barring unforeseen circumstances, the hospital site is expected to be operational by Christmas and the upgrades by the end of February next year.”

A CONTRACT to create a new approach across the Archer River has been awarded.

Decmil will deliver the 2.8km southern approach project.

Work on the actual bridge is expected to start next year and be finished in 2023.

Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Barnaby Joyce said the project would involve a 2.8km bitumen seal leading to a new Archer River crossing, giving motorists a smoother and safer journey along the route.

“Decmil has more than 40

years’ experience delivering construction and engineering projects across Australia and we are very pleased to work with them on this important project in Cape York,” Mr Joyce said.

Queensland Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey said the project would bring jobs to the area and boost the local economy “Thanks to Queensland’s strong response to COVID-19, we can get on with the job of delivering important road projects like this,” Mr Bailey said.

“As with all projects, we seek

to create local employment and training opportunities for workers, suppliers and businesses in the area.

“Another important aspect of the CYRP project is our ongoing partnership with the Traditional Owner group in creating economic opportunities for First Nations communities.”

Member for Cook Cynthia Lui said the $237.5 million second stage of the Cape York Region Package was a big win for the Cape.

“With less maintenance needed, locals and tourists can get

out and explore everything Cape York has to offer,” she said.

Member for Leichardt Warren Entsch said that the works were an investment in the community, supporting employment and tourism in the area.

“It is expected that an average of 19 direct jobs will be supported over the life of the project,” Mr Entsch said.

“The Archer River crossing has been a major impediment in connectivity for the Cape and this upgrade is a major step forward in providing all-weather access for motorists.”

RFDS mental health team launches special project CAPE York residents have been invited to participate in a project launched as part of Queensland Mental Health Week.

The Royal Flying Doctor Service has engaged an Indigenous photographer to capture portraits in communities serviced by its Far North Mental Health and Wellbeing Service.

RFDS mental health manager Jos Middleton said the pro-

gram provided an opportunity to strengthen connections with Indigenous people in the Cape.

“Participants will chat with a mental health clinician during their photo shoot and discuss what provides them with strength while living in community,” she said.

“Each response will be captured and presented alongside the framed photograph of the in-

dividual or family, and provided to the participant to keep.

“The project provides community members with the opportunity to share a meaningful story which can inspire others to have the confidence to share their own tales.”

Ms Middleton said the program would also raise awareness of the mental health services available to community

members, in addition to encouraging participants to consider their own health and wellbeing.

Photographer Naomi Hobson will travel to eight different locations over the coming three months as part of the program.

Community members from the NPA, Mapoon, Kowanyama, Pormpuraaw, Napranum, Laura, Lockhart River and Wujal Wujal will be invited to participate.

Disaster expo highlights Restaurant the need to be prepared

ELEVEN people were given their first COVID-19 vaccination and 10 new volunteers were recruited to the SES at the Western Cape Get Ready Disaster Expo on Saturday.

Staff from the Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service administered 31 jabs in total, with 11 of them for first-timers.

Stretch Noonan, the chair of the Weipa Local Disaster Management Group, said it had been a successful event, with around 300 people making their way down to Kumrumja Park over the course of the day.

“We had great support from all of the services and it was really well attended,” he said.

With a new facility currently under construction, the Weipa SES branch was able to sign up some new members at its stall.

The Western Cape Rural Fire Brigade stole the show with its impressive demonstration of a kitchen fire, which lit up the park.

Mr Noonan said while the day was laid back, it was important for all Cape residents to start preparing for cyclone season.

“We’re now in that period when a cyclone could form and now is the time to prepare, not when one is at the doorstep,” he said.

“It’s important to have a plan of what you would do and what you need if a cyclone hits.”

Kim Jaederstrand has joined the CEQ team to work in IBIS stores around the Cape and Torres Strait.

Health promoter a coup for Cape CAPE York not-for-profit retail operator Community Enterprise Queensland has appointed a new health promotion manager to drive healthier living in communities.

Kim Jaederstrand, who has a degree in health science, health communication, and health promotion, has joined the organisation in a role created in partnership with Health and Wellbeing Queensland.

CEQ currently supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people through various health living strategies.

Ms Jaederstrand said she would be taking a hands-on, in-store role in utilising existing health initiatives focusing on a holistic approach to healthy lifestyles.

This approach, which will depend on the needs of each community, could include nutrition, anti-smoking, and physical activity strategies, initially in five of CEQ’s remote stores: Napranum, Lockhart River, Kowanyama, Horn Island and Erub Island.

“My role will be focused on in-store environments and promoting health and wellbeing by nudging people towards better choices,” Ms Jaederstrand said.

“I’ll be developing a full strategy to achieve this, which will include cooking demonstrations and education workshops for example, depending on the needs in each community.

“I also have other ideas, including education tours and the potential use of an app, which could include school visits and would be a lot of fun. It’s basically a game that teaches healthier choices.

“I’ve got five stores and communities that I’m working with, and I’ve already visited four of them, which is great.

“I’ve been spending a lot of time getting to know the communities, building relationships, and getting as much feedback and knowledge as I can.

“My passion is improving the health of people, and I want to successfully implement long lasting and positive changes in local residents.”

Ms Jaederstrand believes her passion for health promotion comes from her parents, who both influenced her while she travelled the world with them as a child.

“My parents have always been very good at caring for people, so I think it comes from me growing up in that environment and seeing communities around the world and thinking of the positive changes that could be made in the places we visited,” she said.

CEQ’s human resources general manager Jennifer Bartlett said the appointment of Ms Jaederstrand showed CEQ’s ongoing commitment to healthy choices for its customers.

“We do take our community service obligation seriously in improving the overall health and wellbeing of the communities we serve, and we are very proactive in that space,” she said.

“We’ve spent many years improving the quality of fresh fruit and vegetables in all our stores, so now’s a perfect time for Kim to come in and further improve on that side of our business.

“Our message to our communities is that we’d love them to come on board with Kim’s journey and embrace the education and resources that we provide.

“Our customers can still make a choice, we’re certainly not taking that away from them, but we want to make sure it’s an educated choice.

“Kim’s a great person to help make that happen, as she’s a real driving force in health promotion.”

NEWS IN BRIEF Funding for visitor centre MAPOON’S new ranger base and visitor information centre will be largely federally funded after the local council was awarded a grant to construct the facility.

Under round five of the Building Better Regions Fund, Mapoon Aboriginal Shire Council was awarded $1.8 million for the Mapoon Ranger Base Visitor Information and Interpretive Centre.

Nationwide, a total of 197 projects to the value of $293.9 million have been approved for funding under the Infrastructure Projects Stream.

Cape York given thumbs up by ‘influencer’ family

DESPITE a breakdown on the Old Telegraph Track, a nomadic family has given Cape York a massive thumbs up.

Daniel and Amanda Courtney, along with their daughter Aria, are travelling around Australia and documenting the trip on their Overland Exposure website and social media channels.

They have quickly become known as camping “influencers” with their stunning photos and helpful reviews of the places they visit.

Speaking with Cape York Weekly, the couple said they had no hesitation giving the Cape a rave review.

“It was amazing. It was probably even better than we expected,” said Amanda, a primary school teacher.

The family visited all corners of the Cape and said they loved the waterfalls scattered across the region, including Trevethan Falls near Cooktown.

The Cape adventure wasn’t without a mishap, though.

PREMIER Annastacia Palaszczuk has outlined a roadmap to reopen the state’s borders to COVID-19 hotspots for fully vaccinated people by Christmas.

Fully vaccinated travellers will be allowed to enter Queensland without the need to quarantine from December 17.

It comes as the state recorded zero new locally acquired COVID cases in the past 24 hours, while more than 8000 people remain stranded interstate, having applied for border passes to enter Queensland.

Ms Palaszczuk said Queensland would begin a phased border reopening for fully vaccinated people from November 19.

She said modelling showed 80 per cent of Queenslanders could be fully vaccinated

by December 17 and said if vaccine targets were reached sooner, the date could be brought forward.

But she said even if the state did not reach 80 per cent, the date was “locked in” and would not be pushed back.

New laws proposed

As they tackled the northern section of the Tele Track they managed to get water in their engine, which ended up in a tow across the Jardine River Ferry.

“We actually made it across Nolan’s Crossing the first time but Dan went back to help a friend and that’s where it all came unstuck,” Amanda said.

“We were going to be sensible and then we got to Nolan’s,

walked the crossing and thought we’d be fine.”

It turned out to be somewhat of a blessing for the Courtneys, though, having spent three weeks in the NPA while repairs were being made to their truck.

“We stayed at the Seisia Caravan Park and met some great people. The hospitality was amazing,” said Dan. “Our truck was ready within a

couple of weeks but we decided to stay an extra week because we enjoyed it so much.”

The supermarkets in Weipa and Cooktown were given a big tick, while they enjoyed Roko Island and recommended a tour of the pearl farm to both Cape locals and tourists.

“We’ll be back for sure and we’ll be telling everyone they can’t miss the Cape.”

A PARLIAMENTARY inquiry into the destruction of the Juukan Gorge rock shelters has recommended new laws to protect sacred sites across Australia.

The inquiry found the Juukan Gorge disaster could happen again because legislation designed to protect cultural heritage has often “directly contributed to damage and destruction”.

In May 2020, Rio Tinto blasted two 46,000-year-old rock shelters in Western Australia’s Pilbara region, despite traditional owners, the Puutu Kunti Kurrama and Pinikura (PKKP) people, warning of the site’s cultural significance.

The inquiry said Rio Tinto’s actions were “inexcusable and an affront, not only to the PKKP but to all Australians”.

The Juukan Gorge destruction made headlines across the world and led to the resignation of three of Rio’s executives.

Cape falls behind in vaccinations FRUSTRATED vaccination teams are continuing to encounter levels of vaccine hesitancy among Cape York residents.

“The reasons for this may include misinformation circulating in the community, personal beliefs, or some complacency,” said Dean Davidson, the acting chief executive of Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service.

“Whatever the reason, the outcome is that vaccination rates in some communities remain much lower than we would like, despite multiple visits by our vaccination teams.

“We have been engaging closely with communities, councils and community leaders where vaccination clinic turnouts have not been as high as hoped or as expected to see if we can address the reasons for hesitancy.

“It’s great that we have managed to keep COVID-19 out of our communities so far, but we can’t be complacent.

“The reality is that once state borders reopen, it won’t be a question of if, but when, coronavirus cases start appearing in our region.

“So, if you have been sitting on the fence, thinking COVID-19 hasn’t affected you, please think again and come and get vaccinated as soon as possible to protect yourself, your family and your community.

“If you choose not to be vaccinated, we will not be able to protect you forever, especially once

national and international borders start to open.

“In many cases, we are aware that community hesitancy is the result of the various rumours and social media misinformation that is currently circulating in relation to the COVID-19 vaccines and the vaccination program.”

Mr Davidson said Cape York residents should speak to health professionals about the vaccine, rather than getting information from other sources.

“I urge community members to ignore rumour and innuendo and to seek out trusted sources for their information,” he said.

“If you’ve heard something about vaccination that concerns you, or want more information, please talk to your doctor, visit your local primary healthcare cen-

tre, or talk to our vaccination teams when we’re in your community.

“We still have many opportunities for Cape York residents to be vaccinated over the next six weeks.”

Mr Davidson said TCHHS had entered into a collaboration with Apunipima Cape York Health Council to provide on-the-ground community engagement in support of the vaccination effort in those communities where the vaccination rate had been lagging below 50 per cent for the first dose.

“These include Aurukun, Hope Vale, Mapoon and Napranum,’’ he said.

“Apunipima staff have been on the ground at Aurukun and Hope Vale engaging with residents and the councils to build support for vaccination clinics.’’

Mr Davidson said the first dose vaccination rate for eligible residents aged 12 years and over at Aurukun following last week’s immunisation clinic had improved to 49 per cent and to 46 per cent at Hope Vale.

“Our team will be returning to Aurukun – for what will be a fourth visit – from November 8-12, and we hope to see further improvement then in both first and second dose rates,” he said.

“We also have further visits taking place at Hope Vale, Mapoon and Napranum, while Apunipima will continue working with the

health service to build community engagement.”

The Royal Flying Doctor Service also delivered vaccinations at Lockhart River, Coen, Pormpuraaw and Kowanyama last week as part of their regular weekly visiting medical clinics.

“This has been a phenomenal effort across a diverse region with very remote communities, and I’d like to give a big shout-out to our vaccination teams – from our nurses, to our admin team, operational team, and infrastructure team – for the work they have been doing,’’ Mr Davidson said.

Access to fresh produce a concern for Cape York COMBATING food insecurity and making healthy food available in remote stores in Cape York and the Torres Strait is the focus of a program called Gather + Grow, launched by the state government.

Chief executive of Health and Wellbeing Queensland Robyn Littlewood said Australians should be outraged by the devastating health effects remote communities suffer due to a lack of fresh and healthy food.

Addressing the Indigenous Local Government Disaster Resilience Forum in Cairns, Dr Littlewood detailed her department’s Remote Food Security Action Plan.

The plan is being developed in partnership with the Torres Cape Indigenous Council Alliance and the Local Government Association of Queensland Dr Littlewood highlighted some of the damming health statistics for remote Indigenous people and the importance of strong community collaboration in identifying and solving the underlying issues.

“You can’t have health without a reliable source of healthy food and almost one in four people living in remote First Nations communities are food insecure, where in other communities it is four out of 100 ... that’s outrageous,” she said.

Dr Littlewood said statistics showed how the lack of access to healthy food in Indigenous communities is contributing to 62 per

cent of the burden of coronary heart disease, 41 per cent of the burden of diabetes, and 34 per cent of the burden of stroke.

“We’ve got to grow the outrage, this is not OK and we should be outraged by this,” she said.

She said the Gather + Grow program was seeking to bring together knowledge from local councils, community leaders, remote stores, freight companies and other stakeholders to improve access to healthy food and to eliminate food insecurity in remote Indigenous communities.

“We’ve got to grow capability and capacity and make sure that communities feel empowered,” she said.

As part of the program the department has established an FNQ presence managed in Cairns who will work closely with the community-controlled, store-based workers as well as other key stakeholders.

There is also a community nutritionist supporting the Torres Strait Island Regional Council’s healthy lifestyle officers to deliver health and wellbeing initiatives on each of the outer islands.

“In partnership, we are working to build the capacity and capability of remote food stores. We will also engage the community to identify priorities and lead actions that will improve access to healthy food and drinks,” she said.

Reward offered to find lost dogs A CAIRNS family is desperately calling on the public for help to find two dogs that went missing after being spooked by fireworks at a Cape York campground two weeks ago.

Adam and Shaedyn Peach were camping with family and friends at the Lion’s Den Hotel on Sunday, October 3 when campers nearby set off fireworks without warning.

Startled by the noise, their dog Rhino ran off and was followed by Lily, another dog belonging to a family friend.

“Our big boy, Rhino, was on his leash and took off with his tail between his legs dragging me behind until I could not hold on any longer. Lily also took off behind him,” Ms Peach said.

A frantic search could not locate the dogs and the family contacted property owners in the area to ask them to be on the look out, but the dogs have yet to be found.

They are calling on people in Cairns and across Cape York to contact them if they see their beloved pets and are offering a reward for their safe return.

“We’ve taken into consideration the fact

of wild pigs, snake bites and even that Rhino could be caught somewhere with his lead, which we highly doubt, as his chain is quite loose and he’s able to get it off himself. We are staying positive they are still out there,” she said.

Rhino is a blue American Bully weighing about 55kg with a white patch on his chest up to his throat.

Lily is a 10-year-old Labrador-Samoyed cross with long black fur and also has white on her chest.

The family has been posting messages on social media and even placed a radio ad asking people to contact them if they see either of the dogs.

Carbon partnership giving opportunities in the Cape A PARTNERSHIP between the Aboriginal Carbon Foundation and a major bank has helped preserve Cape York country and employ a number of Traditional Owners.

As part of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia’s carbon neutrality, the bank supports traditional Aboriginal fire management generating Australian Carbon Credit Units for the second year running.

The Aboriginal Carbon Foundation supports rangers from Kowanyama and Traditional Owners to undertake their savannah burning carbon farming project.

ACF chief executive Rowan Foley said having the Commonwealth Bank committing to a second year of purchasing carbon credits was testament to the rigour of Traditional Owner fire management to generate credit units with verified environmental, social and cultural co-benefits.

“Our nature-based solutions support the Traditional Owners and rangers look after country and provide local jobs,” Mr Foley said.

“We are as much in the people business as we are in the carbon farming business.

“While the International Panel on Climate Change has identified the protection and restoration of natural ecosystems could play an important role in limiting global

warming, it is also about valuing environmental, social and cultural co-benefits for both First Nations people and the corporate sector.

“It’s partnerships like ours that is helping to address the UN sustainable development goals.

based approach, contained in the core benefits verification framework, enables local expertise to lead the verification process – rather than it being done by nonIndigenous external parties.”

Mr Foley said the carbon burning was providing opportunities.

“People have been talking about generating natural-based solutions, and we are consistently demonstrating that this model works. It is generating economic opportunity for Traditional Owners in regional areas while also strengthening culture and cultural practice,” he said.

Language grants get extension

THE state government has extended the $400,000 Indigenous Languages Grant program, giving local groups, schools and Indigenous organisations the chance to secure funding to reinvigorate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages.

Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Craig Crawford said applications for Indigenous Languages grants had been extended until October 29.

“More than 100 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages and dialects were once spoken in Queensland, and we know how important it is to preserve and promote languages that are fundamental to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and identity,” he said.

“Today around 50 Indigenous languages are spoken, with less than 20 being used as a first language. Many of those languages are predominantly spoken in Far North Queensland, including Cape York and the Torres Strait.

Individual grants of up to $20,000 are available.

Applications will close at 3pm on Friday, October 29.

Community full of praise for army’s initiative PORMPURAAW community leaders have praised the success of the Army Aboriginal Community Assistance Program after it delivered much-needed infrastructure in the remote Cape York township.

The works included the construction of an independent living facility for Elders, a men’s shed, two lots of subdivided land for future building works and upgrades to the football field and splash park.

AACAP 2021 also offered community members valuable on-the-job training in catering, photography, maintenance, heavy vehicle and plant machinery, welding, construction and first-aid.

Pormpuraaw Aboriginal Shire Council chief executive Edward Natera said it was a “well received and well funded project” that will bring benefits for many years to come.

He added that the project helped cement a positive relationship between the people of Pormpuraaw and Army personnel as well as providing valuable training opportunities and improvements to the health and housing situation of residents.

“We were quietly happy with the Army and the communication was ongoing every day. They did heavy machinery training, they did carpentry training and 300 people passed through the (Army) dentists,” he said.

“They (the trainees) were very appreciative of the Army presence here, I think the pace of the work got to some of them, but we picked up some other people who wanted to work and train.”

Mr Natera said the creation of two subdivisions will provide a foundation for the council to build 10 new homes to help ease housing pressures in Pormpuraaw.

“Now I’ve just got to look at the plans for the housing construction and it will assist with our wait list for homes,” the CEO said.

“With the issues they have at Aurukun we’ve got a lot of families that we’ve got to try to accommodate here at Pormpuraaw.”

Following the AACAP 2021 closing ceremony in September, Officer Commanding AACAP 2021 Major Greg Stannard said he felt privileged to lead the delivery of the Army workforce component of this year’s project.

“The community was engaged in all aspects of the program and the Army team thoroughly enjoyed their time. We’ve built what we hope will be a lasting legacy for Pormpuraaw,” he said.

The successful applicant will support the development of strong relationships within the school community in particular with students, parents, staff and volunteers. The Tuckshop/Catering Manager leads a small, dynamic team to deliver healthy food and drink choices to students and staff, in line with Queensland School’s Smart Choices Strategy.

Western Cape College is looking for a person who has: • Chef/cook, tuckshop convenor and/or hospitality experience • Good organisational skills • Effective communication and interpersonal skills • Seeks out opportunity to expand e.g. on delivery and the variety of foods • Motivation, enthusiasm and flexibility.

Role duties: The Tuckshop/Catering Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operations and the effective and efficient operation of the tuckshop in accordance with the policies and directions as determined by the Western Cape College (Weipa Campus) P & C. Duties of the role include, but are not limited to: • The day to day operation of the tuckshop within the guidelines and processes set the College and P&C Association.

Maintenance works highlight Sea Swift’s commitment SEA Swift is undertaking a major refit of its Norman River vessel in Cairns, as part of its 10-year asset renewal plan to maintain all vessels which supply essential freight services to major coastal and remote island communities.

The Norman River, a 23.5m tug used for project and charter services, is currently dry docked while it undergoes the refit. Works include: • Stern gear – shaft and propeller, rudder, and steering; • Structural work;

• Mechanical work on main engines and gear boxes; • Paint work below and above the water line; • Service and repair of deck machinery, such as anchor and tugger winch; • Modification and upgrades, including radar and accommodation.

Sea Swift chief executive officer Rochelle Macdonald said the significant investment reinforced the high importance the company places on maintaining its fleet of 25 vessels.

“We are committed to working closely with Norship in maintaining our vessels to a very high standard to avoid costly breakdowns and interruptions to community schedules,” said Dr Macdonald.

“The Norman River tug provides additional capacity to our essential schedule service and infrastructure projects. The refit will underpin our status as the region’s number one choice in marine transport.”

The Norman River is expected to return to service this month.

AS a First Nations woman, CQUniversity alumnus and lecturer Sherie Bruce is certain she followed her passion for environmental science because of her deep connection to the land.

Sherie is an Arrernte woman with a deep cultural connection to the Yolgnu people – a connection she fosters in her role as course coordinator and lecturer of First Nations and community engagement and student adviser at CQUni. “I started my Higher Education journey completing a Certificate III in Horticulture – Landscape Design at the Rockhampton TAFE many years ago. Completing that certificate led me to environmental science,” she said.

“I graduated with a Bachelor of Environmental Science in 2019 and am currently completing a Bachelor of Science (Honours) (Environmental Biotechnology).

“I found the delivery of wideranging subjects and the ability to mix and match them to your interests or career path very valuable.

“Australia’s First Nation people are deeply interconnected with the environment, so it was natural to choose those degrees. I hoped these degrees would assist me in my journey to ensure First Nations voices are included in the conservation sector in Queensland, along with developing real-world solutions to the ever-growing pollution problem.”

“I enjoy practising permaculture, which has drawn heavily on First Nations culture,” she said.

“The combination of people, environment and resources, through mutually beneficial connections imitating no waste, closed-loop systems seen in so many natural

systems with the ability to integrate into any rural and urban contexts at any scale, permaculture is impressive.

“Another passion is decolonising the conservation sector. The environment is not separate from people; Australia’s First Nations people always have and always will be intrinsic to the Australian environment. It is essential for environmental protection that colonised conservation practices are dissolved.”

As course coordinator and lecturer of First Nations and commu-

nity engagement, Sherie said she is thrilled to be sharing her knowledge to support students so they can be confident in understanding and working with Australia’s First Nations people.

This is echoed in her role as casual learning advisor with CQUni’s Indigenous Student Engagement team.

The team provides support to current and future First Nation students via a range of programs including STEPS enabling programs, tutoring and student advice.

“So many inspiring CQUni staff have helped me on my university journey, and I am proud to continue sharing that support,” she said.

As for the future, Sherie said she has further research projects on the horizon.

“There will definitely be more study. A PhD is next, and I already have several other research projects underway, including more fungi fun and cross-cultural competency in the environment and conservation sectors,” she said.

“CQUni is one of the very few dual-sector universities.

“As a student, you can transition smoothly from a Certificate to a PhD. “For us remote and rural mob, CQUni is world-class in delivering online education.

“I started my first degree on campus and then moved to Blackwater and easily changed to online learning.”

Cape juniors benefit from experience at big carnival SEVEN aspiring rugby league stars have returned to the Northern Peninsula Area with their heads held high, after competing against some of the best under-16 players Queensland has to offer.

With a sporting sponsorship of $3500 from Bamaga Enterprises, Jyren Whap, Marco Williams, Asuelu Aniba, Owen Babia, Oki Namai, Solomon Woosup and Frank Ropeyarn played off in the Arthur Beetson Foundation Murri Carnival in Brisbane.

“The team played every game in good spirits, putting in 100 per cent effort, regardless of winning or losing,” team manager Kelly Jackson said.

“This was evident throughout the carnival and many different people asked where we were from; our team’s bond, cheerful nature, and overall attitude were infectious and on show for all to witness.”

The ABF was founded by the Beetson family, which aims to continue their father’s sporting legacy and passion for his people.

The ABF is dedicated to bettering health, education, and employment outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples through sport, particularly Rugby League, which led to the ABF Murri Carnival being formed.

players from different regions across Queensland and they stayed together at Anglican Church Grammar School, giving them the opportunity to form friendships and bonds with kids from across the state they wouldn’t usually meet,” Jyren’s mother Mabelene Whap said.

“For a lot of these boys it was the first time they had the chance to compete in a strong competition located outside the NPA. “The carnival was also an opportunity to open the boys’ minds up to a number of different opportunities that exist beyond a remote

community and show them what it takes to chase a career in elite sports.”

The event took place at the South Pine Sporting complex in a round-robin-style format with teams playing off against each other across three days from 21-24 September.

Emil Jawai, a previous NPA resident who now attends Anglican Church Grammar School in East Brisbane formed the team known as the “Zei Balas”.

in the first match when they defeated Murri United 30-20. The following three games were against tough opposition and the Zei Balas were beaten 52-0 by Goori Storm, 20-4 against Toowoomba Warriors and 42-16 by Bayside Brothers.

“Zei Balas played amazingly well throughout the carnival; while we would’ve liked some results to be better, we are better for the experience and the team can hold their heads high,” Ms Jackson said.

“Unfortunately, our side was depleted through COVID-related circumstances, and some players could not make the carnival.”

Big-hitting Charlie in rep squad

WEIPA junior cricket product Charlie Lawrence will represent Cricket Far North in Townsville at the end of the year after the star batsman performed strongly in front of selectors.

The teenager was sent out to open the innings and hit three sixes and three fours on his way to 41, earning a spot in the CFN under-14 team.

Now a boarding student in Cairns, Charlie plays cricket with the Rovers Cricket Club on weekends. He comes back to Weipa on the school holidays.

SPORT IN BRIEF Dall wins again JON Dall’s hot run of form continued on Sunday morning as he claimed victory in the Dawnbusters golf at Weipa.

In a field of 11, Dall beat Vivian Chan for the honours, with Derek Tata at the bottom of the leaderboard to claim Hoffman’s.

Alan Wyness had the longest drive, while Matt Byrne picked up the nearest to pin.

Richo simply superb ROB Richardson had an impressive win at last week’s Wednesday Wackers, but the talking point was the costly round of Mick Cerneka.

Never short of confidence, Cerneka backed himself in a few side bets and his round didn’t quite measure up, which saw him shouting regularly at the bar.

Richardson beat Jim Lucas for the first prize, while Lauren Clark scooped the pool for the Bradman’s.

Mark had the win firmly in his sights as he needed to par the last two holes to score at least a 65 but imploded in spectacular style on 17 with an 8, handing Wal third spot and a bonus 700 points in the Race to the Bay. Nearest to the pins went to Steve Butler on 2/11, Mark Rolan on 14 and Sam Godfrey-Roberts on 9/18.

This week is a Par 3 stableford, where every hole will be reconfigured into threeshot holes. It should be a lot of fun.

Bulldogs well prepared ahead of footy carnivals

THE Napranum Bulldogs will dust off the cobwebs this weekend when they play their first competitive game for two years at the Gordonvale Indigenous Rugby League Carnival.

With no organised competition in Cape York this year and COVID-19 killing off games in 2020, the Bulldogs have been training for a long time to prepare for a string of carnivals.

Jason Nixon has been leading the team on the field and says the side, made up of players from Napranum, Weipa and a few former Western Cape stars, was in good shape heading to Gordonvale.

“We’ve got Denzel King playing for us and he was with

His brother Seamus was going to play but now he’s with the Storm he won’t be able to,” the veteran playmaker said.

“They are from Weipa so its not like they are ring-ins.

“We definitely want the team to come from the Napranum

area and represent the Cape.”

Margie Nixon has been doing a lot of the work behind the scenes, securing sponsors and lining up fundraisers.

She said the support of the local community had been immense.

“Everyone we asked has

said yes and helped out in some way,” Ms Nixon said.

“We’re going down to Gordonvale and then we’re backing up in the Dan Ropeyarn Cup in Bamaga. It’s expensive to attend carnivals and buy uniforms so we’re grateful for all the support.”

ZENADTH KES CUP MEANWHILE, a huge crowd has watched Erub United win the Zenadth Kes Cup at Ken Brown Oval on Thursday Island.

Previously known at the Torres Strait Cup, teams from across the region battled it out over three days, with the final staged on Sunday night.

The Darnley Island side proved too good across the carnival and returned home on Monday as champions.
