Parents forced to leave town or quit their jobs

Child care solution?

FRUSTRATED parents in Weipa are hoping that a survey could lead to a solution for the town’s growing child care issues.

Catholic Early Learning and Care last week posted an online survey, asking parents in the Weipa area to answer seven questions relating to their child care needs.

With more than 100 children on a waiting list for care in Weipa, the interest from Catholic Early Learning and Care has been welcomed by parents who have been unable to return to work as a result of the shortage of places.

they can’t get child care for their daughter Evelyn.

“I fell pregnant last year and I put us on the waiting list really early, before work even knew,” Ms Bradley said.

“Right now, we are still 12 to 18 months away from getting child care. I know of three other nurses who have been in the same situation and have left town as a result.”

Ms Bradley said she loved the Weipa lifestyle and hoped that something would be done to fix what is becoming a major issue.

“I don’t see the situation getting much better. No one seems to want to do something,” she said.

“I rang up a child care operator in the Tablelands and I was able to get a spot immediately.”

She welcomed the survey and

the potential interest of a third-party child care operator, but said it would likely be too late for dozens of parents waiting for care.

Kay Reyes, the executive director of Catholic Early Learning and Care, said while nothing was locked in, there was definite interest in providing child care in a growing community like Weipa.

“But yes, we are interested in seeing if we can do something for Weipa families.”

Catholic Early Learning and Care currently has 15 child care services in the Cairns region.

“We have a total of 5000 bookings a week, showing how many parents trust the quality of learning, love and care we provide our families.”

Ms Bradley said she could not understand why more had not been

done by the town’s leaders to address the issue.

“From what I can tell it’s been a problem for a long time,” she said.

“We love Weipa – it has really grown on us, but if there’s no child care there’s no way we can stay.”

Weipa’s main child care facility is the Rio Tinto-owned Cape Kids Child Care Facility, which had to undergo an extension several years ago in order to increase capacity.

But the mining company has often shirked responsibility of providing enough child care slots for the town’s parents.

Care to increase family day care opportunities, however has fallen short of building any kind of new facility to cater for the demand.

Privately, the mining company believes the state government has to step up to provide another child care facility for the community.

The Queensland government is the second biggest employer in the town, between the hospital, school, police and ambulance services.

Member for Cook Cynthia Lui was made aware of the massive child care issues when she made a rare visit to Weipa earlier this year.

The Western Cape Chamber of Commerce told the MP it was one

of the biggest problems facing the town and that jobs were at risk as a result of the shortage.

Ms Lui has yet to respond to any of the concerns.

Rio Tinto has lost some of its own employers as a result of the child care shortage and the mining company’s recent call to employ more local women was met with the complaint about the lack of options for care.

Mums have also had to go through the heartbreaking experience of removing their unborn children from the waiting list.

“Some people are ringing up and putting their names down on

the list as soon as they find out they are pregnant,” one mother told Cape York Weekly.

“A friend of mine had a miscarriage and I can’t imagine how hard it would have been for them to then cancel that spot.”

Should Catholic Early Learning and Care go through with plans to bring child care to Weipa, the next question will be land and housing availability.

Finding a suitable location for a new facility would be just one of the challenges. Weipa also faces a massive shortage of housing, with virtually no houses to rent in town.

Cardiac Challenge raises half a million for charity

CYCLISTS from the 15th annual Cardiac Challenge charity bike ride rolled into Cooktown on Monday after completing their gruelling 333km ride from Cairns.

Hundreds of riders and support staff congregated at the Cooktown splash park to cool off after the final 79km leg of the three-day event.

Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation CEO Tony Williamson said this year’s ride set an all-time fundraising record of more than half a million dollars which will go towards cardiac health infrastructure for FNQ. “The original target was $300,000 and we exceeded that, then we set a new target of $429,000 and we exceeded that,” he said.

“It’s gone extremely well, there was some incredible fundraising achieved. Last time I checked it was about $502,000, which is an absolute record.”

“It’s been hot on the road but the motoring public has been very supportive and understanding of what we are working towards,” he said.

“We got a closure of the

The tired riders and event staff held a celebratory dinner at the Cooktown PCYC to mark the success of the ride and amazing fundraising efforts.

“Everyone has set an incred-

ible milestone this year so we will have to see if we can beat it next year,” Mr Williamson said.

The Cardiac Challenge was launched in 2007 by the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation which has raised more than $4 million for cardiac services in that time.

Conquer walk growing in stature AROUND 200 people will tackle the dust of the PDR on the weekend for what has become an annual ritual for many.

The Conquer the Corrugations walk was designed as a mental health awareness event but has grown significantly in the seven years since inception.

“It hasn’t necessarily grown in numbers, but it has strengthened,” said Wolverton Station’s Emma Jackson, one of the founders of Conquer the Corrugations.

“Everything is easier now that we’re established because instead of asking for support, we’ve got people coming to us, asking how they can support the event.”

Walkers will start on Saturday morning at the biosecurity centre on the outskirts of Coen.

They’ll walk 23km to a spot on Wolverton called 28 Mile Lagoon, where they camp and enjoy a fire and one another’s company.

On Sunday morning, they’ll get in cars and buses and be dropped off at the Archer River Roadhouse, walking about 19km back to their campsite.

“We’ve got people from all over the Cape coming, including Weipa, Cooktown, Aurukun and the cattle stations,” Ms Jackson said.

“The best thing about Conquer is that it’s completely free, it’s not a fundraiser, it’s just a group of people doing something pretty hard and having a conversation along the way.”

ABC’s Landline program will document the event, to be aired later this year.

Around 200 people will tackle the Peninsula Developmental Road this weekend for Conquer the Corrugations.

NEWS IN BRIEF Candidate on the road LABOR candiate Elida Faith is visting some of Cape York’s remote outposts as part of her federal election campaign.

Ms Faith was in Pormpuraaw on Monday, will be in Coen and Archer River today, before heading to Lockhart River on Wednesday.

At the end of the week she will visit Kowanyama before returning to Cairns.

“I’ve had a terrific response from people right across the Cape since I was endorsed as the candidate, so I really look forward to heading back up there and meeting with as many locals as I can,” she said.

“Whether it be the vaccine rollout, telecommunications, roads or housing – I want to hear people’s concerns, their ideas and how we can work together.”

Accommodation boost A BUSINESS loan for staff accommodation in Bamaga has been paid off.

In 2018, Bamaga Enterprise Limited took out a loan with the Torres Strait Regional Authority for the construction of staff accommodation at Bamaga.

BEL obtained a loan through the TSRA’s Economic Development Program Business Funding Scheme which enables Torres Strait and Aboriginal people living in the region to acquire, own and develop commercially viable enterprises.

BEL general manager Chris Foord said: “The loan allowed us to construct a residential duplex which also benefited Indigenous employment through subcontracting of construction works to local builders and tradespersons.

“We have been able to pay back the loan quickly as we now have accommodation for full-time staff which assists in generating our business and ultimately our income.

“We are proud of our achievement and thank TSRA for the loan in assisting us realise our goals.”

Location for Landcare THE Western Cape Landcare Group has secured a parcel of land in Weipa.

The group was formed late last year with a big attendance at a public meeting.

However, plans to establish projects were stalled as a result of not having a suitable location.

After talks with Rio Tinto, a block of land was offered in Rocky Point on Tonkin Drive, near the Anchorage.

A meeting will be held on the site on October 7, with a time to be confirmed.

Vaccination rates must lift: CEO CAPE York residents are being urged to take advantage of an extended COVID-19 vaccination program and get immunised as a priority.

“Since our vaccination rollout started in early March, we have been offering our residents multiple opportunities to be immunised at travelling clinics in their home communities,” Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service chief executive Bev Hamerton said.

“Indeed, we extended our rollout into mid-November by adding another 23 catch-up vaccination clinics to our already comprehensive program.

“So please, if you haven’t yet been vaccinated, or have only had one dose of vaccine, take the opportunity over the next few weeks to be fully vaccinated.

“As Queensland, Australia and the world begin to open up, the risk of variants of COVID-19 entering our vulnerable First Nations communities will increase steadily.

“Being fully vaccinated offers the highest level of protection, both against being infected and in helping minimise the seriousness of any illness if you do become infected.

“We need to get to the national target of 80 per cent of the eligible population being fully vaccinated and we are still well short of that throughout our region.

“Everyone aged 12 years and up is eligible to be vaccinated.

“So, don’t hesitate. Get vaccinated to protect yourself, your family, and your community.’’

Ms Hamerton said the health service last week delivered vaccination clinics at Ugar (Stephen), Erub (Darnley) and Thursday islands, as well as at Weipa, Mapoon, Wujal Wujal, Napranum and Laura.

“We had a very good turnout at Wujal Wujal for their first dose clinic, with 67 per cent of the eligible population aged 12 years and over receiving their first dose.

“Unfortunately, the turnout was much lower at Laura, where we also held a first dose clinic, with only 34 per cent of the eligible population coming in for their first vaccination.

“In the Torres Strait, despite three separate clinic visits each to Ugar (Stephen) and Erub (Darnley) islands, and community engagement, the turnouts there continue to be poor.

“So far, despite our multiple clinic visits, and despite only a small population size, only 42 per

cent of the eligible population aged 12 and over on Ugar has taken up the first dose of vaccine and only 30 per cent has had both doses.

“On Erub, 45 per cent of the eligible population has taken up the first dose of vaccine and 29 per cent their second dose – again despite three separate clinic visits, including a two-day catch-up clinic last week.

“Many other communities in the Torres Strait are doing much better than this and I commend them for their good response to our clinics.

“But we really need every community in the Torres Strait to come forward in good numbers to ensure maximum protection and continuing safety for everyone.

“We are also finding that right across the region, whether this is in the Torres Strait or Cape York, we are getting higher turnouts at clinics for the first dose of vaccine but – with some exceptions – much lower turnouts for our second dose clinics.

“I want to emphasise that you really must have that second dose for maximal protection.”

Ms Hamerton said after last week’s clinics, the health service’s vaccination rates at Weipa for the eligible population aged 12 years and over stood at 65 per cent for first dose and 55 per cent for second dose.

At Mapoon, the rate was 51 per cent first dose and 32 per cent second dose; at Napranum it was 46 per cent first dose and 25 per cent have had both doses.

“Cape York has seen 50 per cent of the total estimated eligible population aged 12 years and over receive their first dose of vaccine, with 32 per cent now fully vaccinated,” the CEO said.

“We hope these percentages will improve as our vaccination teams continue delivering clinics.”

Museum tribute to Cape wonder

THE life and legacy of a Far North adventurer who, together with Traditional Owners, fought for the protection of the ancient Quinkan rock art near Laura, is being showcased in an exhibition at Cairns Museum.

Cairns Historical Society executive officer Fleur Anderson said the exhibition Percy Trezise – The Man Who Loved Cape York Peninsula is a tribute to an unconventional visionary who was once a household name in the north.

“Percy Trezise was a force and an amazingly talented man who raised awareness on the national stage and beyond of Queensland’s significant indigenous cultural heritage in the rock art of Cape York,” she said.

Suzanne Gibson, curator at Cairns Museum, said that Percy’s long-standing friendship and artistic partnership with Goobalathaldin, also known as Dick Roughsey, was central to his activism.

The pair met at Karumba in the 1960s, forged a friendship through their mutual love of painting, and would go on to explore and help preserve the ancient rock art scattered across the sandstone country around Laura.

“Because he had the friendship with Dick, who was a Lardil man from Mornington Island, an initiated guy, he could build relationships with the local men who didn’t trust white people at all,” Ms Gibson said.

“They all went hunting, camping, yarning and drinking and the old men told Percy the stories of the rock art and what it meant... but not all of it, obviously.

“Percy was a full brother to Dick so he was taken into Dick’s family, but Dick also stayed with Percy’s family. Percy provided

him a place for him to paint and work and promoted his career.

“They have 20 years together where they bring the Cape, and really Northern Aboriginal culture, into the national imagination.

“It is a really significant partnership because they’re painting it, they’re doing children’s books about it and they’re on the first committee of the Australia Council and Aboriginal Arts Board.”

Matt Trezise, Percy’s son, said he had fond memories of exploring the Cape York region with his father.

“It was a road worker who discovered those (Quinkan rock art) sites but as soon as he heard about it, Percy and his close friend Xavier Herbert, who shared his interest in Aboriginal culture, decided to race up to Laura to have a look and my brother Steven and I went with them,” he said.

Matt, who lives at Jowalbinna Station near Laura, says his father was a constant advocate for Aboriginal people on Cape York to be able to own and manage their traditional lands.

“He was a long way ahead of his time, and its taken an awful long time, but it’s happening. In the last few years we’ve seen a lot of country cattle stations go back to the ownership of Aboriginal people.

“Despite the lack of resources, and not enough staff to really get into it, they are making a real good go of managing their country and, of course, the Laura Rangers are doing a terrific job relocating, recording and looking after the rock art heritage in their area.”

Technology helping Cape graziers

A NEW scientific project, dubbed SpaceCows, aims to help Indigenous rangers track and manage feral herds on their land in Cape York and northern Australia.

The joint project, a partnership between Aboriginal land management groups, universities, CSIRO, a satellite company and Microsoft, uses artificial intelligence and data from satellite tracking to predict herd movements.

Balnggarrawarra ranger and Normanby Station Traditional Owner Vince Harrigan said existing technology allowed rangers to track feral cattle but the new

SpaceCows program would predict where they’re going.

“We thought it would be a benefit for us; we have a lot of wild cattle that are roaming the country and disturbing our special areas like our swamps and lagoons and our sacred areas,” he said.

The technology can help predict, for example, how hot weather might push herds to head a certain way towards water and allow rangers to intervene to cull them, muster them or fence off important cultural sites.”

With just four rangers managing the 31,400-hectare Normanby Station, Mr Harrigan says the program has huge potential to increase

the efficiency of their mustering efforts and result in bigger sales and improved herd management.

“It all comes down to monitoring and being cost-effective, so we’re not using endless hours flying around looking for these animals,” he said.

“When we get a big wet season, the Normanby is just riddled with feral cattle, and they’re trying to get into our controlled herds, so we want to manage those fellas better and get a better quality head for our mob of cattle by pulling the rubbish stuff out.”

“Using information the ear tags generate, land managers can access more precise decision-making tools about where they focus efforts to reduce the impacts of buffalo and cattle grazing and eroding native flora and fauna,” he said.

“As our environment recovers, it will be more resilient in the face of fires, invasive plants and climate change, and we’ll be able to protect sites of cultural significance.

“We’ll also be developing bestpractice ethical mustering and handling guidelines so these animals can become part of the ethically-

sourced meat industry, creating more jobs in our communities.”

Rangers are being trained to use the AI, which factors in terrain and on-ground conditions, to help plan the best routes to reach and manage the animals.

“The project gives us the latest technology to help with land management, but also provides training with drones and tablets, which is a big thing for our mob, especially the young ones,” Mr Harrigan said.

“I think the main thing is that it is being Indigenous-led, especially on the ground, and that comes back down to creating job opportunities and getting our mob back out on country.”

Demi and Charlotte had a good day out at the Weipa Pig Hunt.

Dorothy Edwards’ art pieces are inspired by her homelands on Cape York Peninsula.

Cape York artist on centre stage at UMI ARTWORKS showcasing stories of Dorothy Edwards’ life growing up on Kokoberrin country in Cape York will be celebrated in a new solo exhibition at UMI Arts in Cairns.

The mother of talented Cairnsbased artists, Lisa Michl Komanggén and Shaun Edwards, Dorothy might have waited until now to explore her own artistic ability, but a new body of work created for her first independent exhibition Homelands proves there’s no bounds to the family’s talent.

“I’m proud of my children for being strong leaders and learning about their Kokoberrin culture so that it remains strong into the future,” she said.

Featuring a combination of prints and acrylic on canvas paintings, Homelands opened last week and will run until December at UMI Arts Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Arts Gallery.

In preparation for her first solo exhibition Dorothy participated in UMI Arts’ business, printmaking, and painting “exhibition ready” workshops to further develop her range of skills and techniques before setting to work in the UMI studio workshop, where she spent many weeks.

Dorothy Edwards raised great artists and found her calling later in life.

According to Dorothy, her inspiration was drawn from stories and memories of a childhood growing up on country which she conveys in a series of paintings and prints.

“Making artworks connects me with my ancestors and culture. I can remember being on country collecting bush foods and weaving with my aunties,” she said.

“Our families still do these

things today and it is through art and practising our skills that things get passed on to the next generation.”

Dorothy’s homelands on her mother’s and grandmother’s side are known as Pinnarinch and stretch between Staaten River National Park in the south and north to Nassau River, including Wyabba Creek and Dorunda Lodge area.

The hunt had a total of 121 adult hunters and four juniors.

The 48 teams brought back a massive 244 feral pigs and a handful of feral cats.

With team names like “Don’t Go Bacon My Heart” and “Getting Piggy With It”, there was a real sense of fun to this year’s event and the dancing to local band the Usual Suspects proved it on the night.

The committee is in discussion about an event name change and more Traditional Owner cooperation and participation.

New festival venue given the tick

A BUMPER crowd turned up for this year’s Wallaby Creek Festival at the event’s new site at Shiptons Flat Road in Rossville.

Festival organisers estimate more than 1600 people and dozens more performers and volunteers attended the three-day music and arts festival, which was shut down last year due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Sandra Lloyd, entertainment and media director for the festival, said headliners Tijuana Cartel and Mason Rack band drew huge crowds and there was something for everyone with 20 acts performing across three stages.

“Tijuana Cartel and the Mason Rack Band were pretty amazing and Rich King got a great response,” she said.

“Kallidad actually put them-

selves in quarantine because they wanted to be here so much. Everyone wanted to play so much, because it’s been so long since they have, because of COVID.” Ms Lloyd said the dozens of arts and craft workshops were well attended, as were the children’s festival activities.

The new festival site also proved to be ship-shape and hundreds of campers took advantage of the site’s close proximity to the Annan River to have a swim and cool off during the hot afternoons.

Ms Lloyd said that she looked forward to working with volunteers to continue to improve the new site as the festival settled into its new home.

“It’s a constant thing; we have a debrief about what worked and what didn’t. Because it’s new it was always going to be try-it-andsee for this first event,” she said.

MOTHERS putting unborn children on waiting lists should be something we’re shocked about, but that’s the sad reality families face if they live in Weipa.

It’s simply not good enough.

Waiting up to two years for a spot in a child care centre is just disgraceful.

This is not a new issue for the town – I have been writing about child care issues for six years.

But what is being done about it? Not much from the bodies in charge, it seems.

It’s one thing to pay a truck driver a six-figure salary, but what good is an employee if they can’t go to work and have their children looked after in a safe environment?

Too many good people have been forced to leave Weipa or quit their jobs to stay in town as a result of the issue.

While the prospect of a thirdparty operator coming to town is promising, any new facility would take years to develop.

The town’s leaders need to do something – today if possible – and find a solution to this issue.

It’s just not good enough. q q q q FROM a serious note to something a little lighter and it’s great to be operating in Cooktown and the southern Cape.

I was driving up the Mulligan Highway the other day and pulled into the Mount Carbine pub to check to see if the papers were being delivered.

Behind the bar, publican Dale Morris was beaming with joy to have a local paper dropped off at his doorstep.

“When Tuxies dropped them off I told them it was a mistake, because we didn’t get a paper, but when they showed me the

label with the pub on it I was rapt,” he said.

“It’s a good read, too. I have been giving one to everyone that comes through.”

Dale said he’d had a good tourist season and has enjoyed a few good Saturdays of late on the back of the Mount Carbine Rodeo and the weekend’s Cardiac Challenge bike ride.

“We’re open from 10am to midnight every day. Even when it’s quiet we keep those hours because everyone knows that we’ll be open,” he said.

“You’d be surprised at how many people show up at 11.30 at night wanting takeaways.” q q q q THE countdown is at 36 days for the Cooktown Amateur Turf Club as it braces for its annual race meeting.

Always one of the best events on the Cape York calendar, the track is in superb condition.

I caught up with long-time committee members Gloria Savage and Peter Shields at the track and they are anticipating a massive crowd at the Cup.

“People need to know they can’t show up on the day and get a ticket; they need to buy them online first,” Gloria said.

Peter paid tribute to the likes of Des Savage, who has kept the course in pristine condition over the dry season.

The club made a few extra dollars this year as a result of Cooktown’s excellent tourism season, with the course playing the role of an overfill site.

“We hope to do the same again next year and maybe take on a bit more responsibility for the RV area, which the council currently manages,” Peter said.

“Having that extra bit of income takes a bit of pressure off the committee.”

The Cooktown Cup meeting is on Saturday, November 6 and tickets can be purchased by going to the TryBooking website. q q q q I WAS down at Jones Park in Cairns on Saturday to watch a bit of the Central Cape Suns junior rugby league team at the Tassell Trophy tournament.

I saw the size of the Suns was they would be hard-pressed to match up with some of their more credentialled rivals.

While the Weipa-based boys didn’t register a win, they sure proved me wrong, showing plenty of ticker in all their matches.

They were deservedly given the Spirit Award on Sunday. q q q q WE’RE getting close to the end of the Cape York events calendar, with the annual Weipa Billfish Tournament and Mapoon Barra Bash being staged this weekend.

There’s also the Conquer the Corrugations walk on the PDR. These events make Cape York a great place to live and work and we dearly missed the Laura races and rodeo this year.

There are rumours the popular Cape York event may struggle to return, but I know there are some dedicated volunteers doing everything they can to ensure that we haven’t seen the last of the Laura weekend.

Implementation Officer – WCCT

The Western Cape Communities Co-Existence Agreement (WCCCA) is an Indigenous Land Use Agreement (ILUA) over the Rio Tinto mining lease areas of the Western Cape York region of Northern Queensland. The Agreement is between eleven Traditional Owner Groups, four Shire Councils (Aurukun, Napranum, Mapoon and New Mapoon), Rio Tinto, the Queensland State Government and the Cape York Land Council on behalf of the Native Title Parties.

The Western Cape Communities Trust (WCCT) assumes responsibility for the administration, investment, allocation and custody of funds sourced from Rio Tinto and the Queensland State Government under the WCCCA. Disbursements also occur through three linked Sub-Regional Trusts, and this structure reflects Sub-Regional Independence and decision making.

The Western Cape Communities Coordinating Committee (WCCCC) and its three Sub-Committees transparently monitor, implement and review the objectives of the WCCCA to ensure that all parties’ obligations under the agreement are met. The WCCT Office is the administration arm for all the Trusts and the WCCCC. It manages the overall business of the company including servicing, assisting and supporting the above entities.

Reporting to the Implementation Manager, the Implementation Officer is the primary contact point with the eleven Traditional Owner Groups, who are signatories to the WCCCA, and Rio Tinto. This position contributes to assisting with the monitoring and implementation of objectives under the WCCCA and Strategic Plan in the areas of Employment and Training, Cultural Heritage, Community Liaison, reporting and data collection and the facilitation of Aboriginal community participation in cultural, environment and heritage management at a local and regional level.

To be eligible for this position, you must have: • Completed a Year 10 level of education and be familiar with using computers and Microsoft Office • Hold a current ‘C’ Class Drivers Licence • Knowledge and experience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, society and culture and an understanding of relevant issues preferably in relation to the WCCCA region • Ability and willingness to travel to and work in remote communities • Trained in or demonstrated previous experience in Education and Training – tertiary qualifications in this area will be highly regarded but not essential • Good interpersonal skill and an ability to communicate effectively • Knowledge of the Western Cape Region and Traditional Owner Clan Groups within the ILUA

The consistent Grant Crossley had the longest drive on the first, while no one was able to collect the nearest to pin.

Tournament organisers have an eye on weather ORGANISERS of this weekend’s Weipa Billfish Tournament are hopeful the weather turns to provide some ideal conditions to chase marlin and sailfish in the Gulf.

“I look at the weather 10 times a day and my gut feeling is that it is starting to change for the better,” said Ben Bright, one of the eager committee members putting together this year’s event.

“It’s been lousy all year but when the conditions have allowed us to get out there the fishing has been good.

“I look at the wind model that the BoM punches out and that doesn’t look too bad.”

Bright said team numbers might be down this year, but expected around 15 boats to head out for three days of fishing, starting on Saturday morning.

“Nominations close on Friday with the reading of the rules at the Weipa Bowls Club,” he said.

“You can fish until 4pm Monday and then we have the presentation night at the bowlies on the Tuesday night.”

Most of the teams join up at Boyd’s Bay on Saturday and Sunday night for socialising and to reflect on the day’s fishing.

“We welcome new teams so get in touch if you’re interested.”

Wust wins Wackers WILY veteran Gavin Wust was the winner of last week’s Wednesday Wackers at Weipa, with the returning visitor beating Scott Triffit by half a stroke.

SPORT IN BRIEF Sperrings return with fire FATHER and son duo Paul and Ryan Sperring returned to Cooktown Golf Club in fine form on Saturday, finishing first and second in the stableford event.

It was the son who took honours, with Ryan scoring 40 points to beat dad Paul.

His win netted him 1200 points to catapult him from 13th to 5th in the Race to the Bay challenge and put him right in the hunt for the coveted final prize.

Paul picked up a handy 300 points to get him up from 8th to 6th.

Plodding away in third spot was Rick Butler on 36 points. This then nudged Sam Godfrey-Roberts into fourth.

Nearest to the pins went to the top three placegetters.

Ryan Sperring was closest on 2/11, Rick Butler got inside Paul Sperring on 14 but Paul returned the favour on 9/18.

Determined Suns display courage at Tassell Trophy

SMALLER than their rivals in every game they played, the Weipa-based Central Cape Suns showed plenty of ticker in the Tassell Trophy in Cairns on the weekend.

The under-14 contingent was at times towered over by their opposition, but used their footy smarts to keep themselves in every match.

On Saturday, the Suns team led in every match, only to be outgunned in the latter stages.

In their first match against a combined Mount Isa side, the Cape team was down 4-0 early before hitting back to lead 6-4 at half-time.

The Isa team’s depth and strength proved too great in the end as they ran away to win 24-6 at Jones Park.

The second contest was the real heart-breaker for the Suns.

They led twice against the Burdekin Roosters, only to get pipped 12-10 late in the game.

Central Cape also led their match against the Cairns-based Kangaroos, but ultimately went down 26-12 in their final match on the Saturday.

On Sunday morning, with little to play for, the Suns went to battle with the undefeated Edmonton Storm, which had conceded just one try in their earlier three matches.

The Central Cape boys were rolled 30-4.

Club president Trent Gordon said he was incredibly proud of the players, who were representing the Suns at the Tassell Trophy for the first time.

“We’ve never sent a team here before and this will be the first of many for years to come,” he said.

“The boys have loved every minute of it and they’ll come back to Weipa as better players.”

The Suns were led by Jack

Barton, Daniel Parker, Bereket Linnehan, Jacob Clegg, Tommy Hudson, Isaac Griffin, Clancy Gordon and many others.

“We couldn’t have done it without the sponsors and the parents who have been amazing supporters,” Gordon said.

“Sending away a team of boys to a carnival is a big job but the reward is well worth it.”

The Suns were awarded the Spirit Award for their efforts.

Monthly medal winners Mick Austin, Matt Byrne and Steve Jensen with sponsor Grant Jamieson from Smit Lamnalco.

Medal win for Austin MICK Austin had the overall best score at the Carpentaria Golf Club’s Saturday monthly medal round, picking up C-grade honours in the process.

Steve Jensen won the A-grade in the Smit Lamnalco-sponsored event, while Matt Byrne claimed B-grade.

Nearest to pins went to Steve Meulman and Kindee Lawty, while Brett Elms and Lawty had the longest drives for their respective sexes.
