WEIPA’S future continues to be in limbo as Rio Tinto refuses to make a commitment to hand over the keys to the town.

Twelve months ago, a clear path was emerging between Rio Tinto and the state government to forge a way to normalise Weipa.

Those discussions have stalled.

Meanwhile, Weipa faces a child care shortage, a lack of available housing, huge infrastructure issues and no long-term plan to address any of these problems.

The town’s normalisation issue was thrust into the national spotlight on Wednesday when an ABC report aired on breakfast TV that highlighted the situation.

Based on the comments posted online, the news shocked most Australians.

“Fancy having a mining company run a town. Weipa is much bigger than a mining camp,” one person wrote.

Rio Tinto says it is open to the idea of normalisation, but refuses to make any kind of commitment.

Deputy Premier Steven Miles is also the state’s Local Government Minister and hasn’t even visited Weipa to discuss the issue.

Member for Cook Cythia Lui has also remained silent, despite hearing the concerns from the community during her last visit.

Rio Tinto drags its heels on normalising township

In a decade’s time, there will be hardly any mining conducted within an hour’s drive of Weipa as the Andoom site begins to wind down.

Weipa Town Authority chair Michael Rowland ran for office based on the promise from Rio Tinto that normalisation was an achievable outcome in what would be his final term.

Re-elected in a landslide in March last year, Mr Rowland has been hitting his head against a brick wall ever since when it comes to making progress on securing the town’s future.

“We need to diversify our economy away from mining,” he said.

“Once more land is made available, the opportunity (would be) to attract other industries to come here, diversify the economy so we’re not all fishing in the same pond.

Editorial: Task force needed

THERE is no time to waste when it comes to securing the future of Weipa, which is Cape York’s biggest economic hub.

Normalising Weipa is going to be such a complex process that it needs to begin now so it can be done in a sensible and sustainable manner.

There is about 10 years of mining left at Andoom and that will prove to be a critical time for the township. How will it survive without mining on its doorstep and ships collecting bauxite from the port?

There are many, many questions.

Rio Tinto’s future in the Cape appears to be solid for at least another 50 years, but “That would give us more security going forward so we aren’t just reliant on mining and the fluctuations of a commodity.”

Mr Rowland said although the Weipa Town Authority would be unable to stand on its own two feet if it became a council overnight, he said there was government funding out there that is currently unavailable.

Cape York Weekly calls on Rio Tinto and the Queensland government to appoint a special task force to implement a responsible handover of the community.

The year 2025 has a good ring to it. That would allow the town to get organised and bring new industry to the Western Cape in preparation for the Andoom closure.

Weipa is too big to fall. The time is now to take action to protect the town’s future.

“It’s restricted in that we don’t get any of the funding that normal councils do from the federal government,” he said.

“We don’t get many state government funding opportunities, simply because they see it as money going to a company, Rio Tinto.

“It is their ABN number on our finances.”

manager Michelle Elvy has been reluctant to give any kind of firm commitment on normalisation.

In her first week in Weipa, she told Cape York Weekly that it “wasn’t a priority”.

This is what she told the ABC: “Rio Tinto is heavily invested in this community and is committed to work with all parties to ensure the sustainability of Weipa.”

Tourism chief has plans for Cape

MEMBERS of the Western Cape Chamber of Commerce will be given reciprocal membership to Tourism Tropical North Queensland under a proposal put forward by the tourism body.

TTNQ chief Mark Olsen will be in Weipa next Monday to speak at the chamber of commerce function and will outline the plan.

The Cairns-based CEO said that TTNQ had worked out a similar arrangement with the Cooktown Chamber of Commerce and hoped it would deliver benefits to the Cape York industry.

“We need to realise that this winter is going to be the biggest on record from a drive market perspective,” Mr Olsen said.

“We have more domestic travellers on the road than ever before.

“For the Cape, it’s about making sure we are ready for the season to come and the challenges that lie ahead.”

Mr Olsen said it was unlikely the domestic tourism boom was going away and that opened up doors for regions like the Cape.

“The blue sky opportunity for us is how we grow the season to cater for more tourists,” he said.

“We need to be working togeth-

er to fill the shoulders and extend the season.”

Mr Olsen said one challenge would be to cater for the peak periods.

“If there are too many people, the local communities will get their backs up if they can’t get medicine or groceries they would normally have access to,” he said.

“And tourists also expect to be catered for with enough camp sites

and available accommodation. If they can’t stay here, their money doesn’t come into town.”

Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch will also speak at Monday night’s function at the Carpentaria Golf Club.

The Chamber of Commerce event is free, although businesses will be asked to join as members.

THIRTEEN youngsters have signed up to be official 2021 Weipa Bullride ambassadors.

To raise funds, they have been cashing in cans, doing extra chores at home, selling ice cups, creating lolly jar guesses and assisting with the popular Chicken Poop Bingo, all whilst actively promoting the Bullride.

“We’ve received so many positive comments about how beautifully mannered the kids are, and their genuine excitement in being involved with the event,” Weipa Bullride publicity officer Courtney Thomas said.

“The Weipa Bullride is a community celebration unlike any other and one of the biggest annual social events in Cape York.

“There’s something for everyone and all are welcome. We’re proud of the fantastic reputation our event has earned.”

The ambassadors will be formally announced and presented with their sashes in the new Bullride arena on Friday, August 20.

Money raised by the youths will go to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia.

Emotions run high at celebration

TEARS of joy and tears of sadness were on full display at the Western Cape Communities Trust last week as Traditional Owners celebrated the 20-year anniversary of their historic agreement.

It was largely a joyous occasion filled with laughter and spirited traditional dancing, although some tears flowed as Elders reflected on those who had passed before them – those who had fought for the cause.

The Western Cape Communities Co-Existence Agreement was a landmark deal for Cape York that signalled Rio Tinto’s commitment to improve the lives of Traditional Owners from the 11 clan groups that occupied the mining lease.

In response to the Native Title law, Rio Tinto developed a policy of active recognition and formal engagement with Traditional Owners in the areas of its operations.

From a legal perspective, the mining company did not require an agreement.

The WCCCA was finally signed on March 14, 2001.

It almost didn’t happen that day, as NPARC councillor Eric Cottis said last week: “We flew down from New Mapoon and forgot to bring the seal with us for the signing. Luckily I was able to phone

someone from the airport and it was brought down on another plane coming to Weipa.”

The WCCCA agreement was one of the first Indigenous Land Use agreements between a mining company and Traditional Owners in Australia and set a precedent for Rio Tinto and the industry.

Some of the key focus areas of the agreement include employment, training, cultural heritage and site protection, business development and ongoing cultural awareness for all employees and contractors.

Western Cape Communities Trust chairperson Marie Pitt said the WCCCA agreement had been a game changer for Traditional Owners in the region and paid tribute to all those who worked hard to make it happen.

“There are many who are no longer with us but they will never be forgotten,” she said.

“We still have work to do to get where we want to be, but we will get there.”

Ms Pitt also acknowledged all the other chairs of the Trust who had stood in her shoes before and challenged the next generation to become leaders of their people.

Rio Tinto Aluminium Pacific managing director Daniel van der Westhuizen said: “We are honoured to commemorate 20 years since the WCCCA was signed, and would like to acknowledge and show appreciation for the work that all parties have contributed to make the agreement a success.

“The agreement represented a new beginning for our relationships with all Western Cape communities, and a mutual commitment between our company and the communities to work together towards a better future.

“It is also an opportunity to reflect on and learn from the past.

“This means building relationships that are characterised by mutual respect, active partnership and a joint commitment to realise longterm benefits for all Traditional Owners across the Western Cape.

“The agreement underscores the importance of working together in genuine partnership for mutual value and benefit to the business and communities alike.”

The event was also used as the official opening of the Achimbun Administration Centre that overlooks the Embley River.

The facility was constructed as the administration hub for the WCCCA and has purpose-built meeting rooms to accommodate the large number of Traditional Owner representatives in one place.

The official opening was slated for last year but had to be postponed due to COVID-19.

The Weipa Fishing Classic committee was out in force on Saturday.

Weipa’s sunset markets have proven to be a hit with families.

Weipa a hive of activity as busy season kicks in THE caravan park is full, the aisles at Woolworths are a little bit more crowded and there are construction sites everywhere as Weipa hits the busy season.

There’s plenty of events on the calendar, too, following the Ron Brooker Memorial dirt karts and the sunset markets on Saturday, with more action on the horizon.

Weipa’s new pontoon is not far from being finished, with the final touches expected to be added next week. Boat ramp closures at Evans Landing were kept to a minimum as kind weather conditions made it fairly straightforward for the pile driving ship.

At the other end of town, the new SES building is starting to take shape, with the facility tipped to be finished by the end of the year, while the Rocky Point servo is making fast progress.

With the school holidays to start on Friday, tourist numbers are going to continue to soar for the next couple of weeks.

Leaders full of praise for Cooktown’s major event THE curtains have been drawn on Cooktown’s much-hyped 2021 Expo, with Cook Shire mayor Peter Scott hailing the 10-day event a success.

The event came to a close with a final performance of the Warrma and a fireworks display over the Endeavour River.

“The cultural and artistic collaboration witnessed in Cooktown over the last 10 days mirrors the joint aspirations for economic and social development and sustainability in our region,” Cr Scott said.

“We are so grateful to Traditional Owners, local Bama, council staff, the production team and the Indigenous communities from across the Cape who really rose to the occasion and were an integral part of the success of this event.

“The Dynamic Business Symposium highlighted the capacity of remote communities to be able to host world-class business events.

Waalmbal Birri Cultural Centre and the $1.98 million redevelopment of the Botanic Gardens, with the $1.7 million Gamaay Dreaming Track Development still to come.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the countless people behind the scenes and the volunteers who worked tirelessly to ensure the Expo went off without a hitch,” said Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch.

Big numbers expected at festival

BARRING border closures or a local case of COVID, big crowds are predicted for this year’s Laura Dance Festival.

Usually held every two years, there hasn’t been a dance festival at Laura since 2017.

The 2019 was pushed back to align with Cooktown’s 2020 Expo, which was then cancelled due to the pandemic.

“Fingers crossed we don’t have any hiccups in the next couple of weeks,” said festival director Fiona John, who has taken on the role for the first time.

“Ticket sales are very strong and we’re encouraging everyone to buy them online in advance so they don’t miss out.

“At this stage we will sell tickets at the gate, but once we reach

our limit we will have to close the gates.”

In order to be a COVID-safe event, numbers are restricted to 2000 people at the festival.

“If something does happen we will of course refund tickets, but

we hope the borders will stay open so that as many people as possible can enjoy the event,” Ms John said.

“We’re fully COVID certified and a lot of work has been done to make sure of that so we can put the event on safely.”

Dance teams will come to Laura from across North Queensland, with the Cape to be represented by Lockhart River, Aurukun, Coen, Hope Vale and Pormpuraaw.

Visiting troupes from Yarrabah, Kuranda, Wooribinda, Djarragun

College and Thikkabila will also perform across the three days.

“Some teams have been reluctant to come because of COVID and that’s understandable. We haven’t put pressure on anyone to perform,” Ms John said.

The event kicks off on Friday, July 2 and world-renowned band Yothu Yindi will headline a music performance on Saturday night.

“It’s going to be another great event for Cape York and bring a lot of tourists to the region,” the festival director said.

“I know a lot of communities have been waiting four long years for this to come around.”

A tent city is also available for those wanting accommodation at the Laura grounds.

Queensland’s new Governor PREMIER Annastacia Palaszczuk has appointed Dr Jeannette Young as the next Governor of Queensland.

The Premier said Dr Young’s service to the state was exemplary, having steered Queensland safely through the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Queenslanders have come to know Dr Young who has stood by my side during hundreds of COVID media conferences,” the Premier said.

“The people of this state know she stood by their side too and kept us safe.

“There is no-one more deserving of the title Her Excellency.”

Her Majesty the Queen has approved Dr Young’s appointment.

Dr Young will become Queensland’s 27th Governor and will be sworn in on November 1, replacing Paul de Jersey.

Visitor numbers strong at the Tip TOURIST numbers are so strong at the tip of Cape York that they give the feel of school holidays, Dale Mears says.

But the holiday rush isn’t expected until next week, when thousands of motorists from across the country visit Cape York, most of them for the first time.

It’s welcome news for tourism operators in the region who were hit hard by COVID restrictions last year and missed out on the busy tourism season.

“We had a late rush late last year but it was still a tough year,” said Mr Mears, who owns The Croc Tent in the Northern Peninsula Area, on the intersection of the road to Pajinka and Punsand Bay. Barring another lockdown, 2021 is well

on track to be a record year for Mr Mears and his wife Lee-anne.

“It’s 100 per cent surpassing it based on previous figures for this time of the year. We just don’t want any more border closures,” Mr Mears said.

“The good news for us is that a lot of the tourists are already on the road and not in those hotspots down south.”

Fishing shirts are the most popular item at The Croc Tent, which has become an iconic tourism destination on the Cape for those on their way to the Tip. As for the road conditions, the increased traffic has corrugated the road, but NPARC contractors have been working hard to keep the unsealed road graded and smooth.

MP happy with budget for region MEMBER for Cook Cynthia Lui believes her electorate has received a fare share of funding from the latest state budget.

“This budget underscores our values: health, education, infrastructure, and employment,” she said last week.

“It will drive Queensland’s growth as we move into the COVID recovery phase.

“Key investments in our electorate include $18m for upgrades and refurbishments across 13 schools, $16.5m for the redevelopment of the Thursday Island Hospital and Primary Health Care Centre, $7m to pave and seal the Burke Developmental Road between Normanton and Dimbulah, $12m for the Kennedy Highway between Cairns and Mareeba, over $40m for the Peninsula Development Road, $7.5m in family and domestic vio-

lence services, over $20m for social housing and $15m to promote and support regional tourism.

“This budget is historic in many ways – as a post-COVID budget and its record investment into education and social housing – things

that are important to me and important to you.

“The investment of a record $2.9b into social housing demonstrates smart investment that will drive jobs and provide safety and security for Queenslanders.

“This kind of investment is all about individuals, families and communities.

“I am also happy to see the $300m for the Path to Treaty – this investment represents the Palaszczuk government’s commitment to working with Queensland’s First Nations peoples to achieve reconciliation.”

The Queensland government is establishing a $300 million Path to Treaty Fund, as a major investment in reconciliation and healing.

The returns from the fund will be used to progress Queensland’s Path to Treaty and support the government’s response to the Treaty Advancement Committee report, expected to be provided to government later in 2021.

Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Craig Crawford said this placed

Queensland well to take action on the next steps towards a treaty or treaties.

“This is an important step forward in our Treaty journey, as we work to acknowledge and address past injustices, and create a new future between First Nations and non-Indigenous Queenslanders.,” Mr Crawford said.

“This is an investment in the future of our State, and the treaty process is a critical tool in promoting reconciliation.”

The 2021-22 state budget will also invest almost $6 million towards language, education, culture, and reconciliation initiatives across the state.

Mr Crawford said the budget would help support Queensland’s efforts to Close the Gap in life outcomes between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.

Queensland implements travel rules

ANYONE travelling to Queensland from interstate will need to make an online travel declaration under new rules implemented by the state government last week.

Minister for Health Yvette D’Ath said the new requirement would support contact tracing efforts.

“It’s vital that if an interstate exposure site or hotspot is declared, our health experts can quickly contact anyone who has travelled into Queensland from that area,” she said.

“This is the next line of defence for Queensland – if we’re able to reach people quickly, it will reduce the risk of COVID-19 in Queensland and manage outbreaks right from the get-go.

“The declaration is made online and is quick and easy, taking only a few minutes to complete, and operates in a similar fashion to the Victorian system.”

Those travelling from New Zealand will also need to make the declaration.

Queensland will introduce green, amber and red areas, where green means no travel restrictions, amber signifies interstate exposure venues, and red alerts to a hotspot.

Chief Health Officer Jeannette Young said the declaration would need to be made up to 72 hours prior to travelling to Queensland.

“The travel declaration needs to be made close to your travel, to ensure it reflects the most up-to-date advice,” she said.

“Things can change quickly – we’ve seen it time and time again, especially with the evolving situation in Victoria, so travellers will need to check the latest restrictions before travelling.”

Dr Young said a cross-border zone would be re-established so those living close to the QLD-NSW border wouldn’t need to complete multiple travel declarations.

“We know there are a number of people living close to the Queensland border who either work or access important services regularly in Queensland or in northern New South Wales,” she said.

“We want to ensure they can continue to do that without making a declaration each time they cross the border, so we’ve established a border zone to cater for those situations.”

NOTICE OF IMPORTANT INFORMATION MEETINGS Cape York United # 1 Native Title Claim (QUD673/2014)

Cape York Land Council will be holding important information meetings for the Cape York United #1 claim in May and June 2021. The Federal Court has set dates for two consent determination hearings for certain native title groups in November 2021. Further determination hearings are timetabled to take place in 2022 and 2023.

For those determinations of native title to take place, the terms of the authorisation of the Applicant in the Cape York United #1 claim must be amended. The information meetings will explain a proposal to change the terms of authorisation. At present the terms of the authorisation require the whole of the claim group (Traditional Owners whose country is covered by the claim) to authorise each determination. The change would allow determinations of native title to take place one by one as each native title group reaches agreement amongst themselves on group descriptions and the prescribed body corporate which will manage the native title and other matters and with their neighbours on boundaries.

This change would be consistent with the principle that each native title group speaks for its own area of country within the Cape York United #1 claim area. It is very important that Traditional Owners attend these information meetings. In July, August and September 2021 CYLC will be holding a series of authorisation meetings to ask Traditional Owners whether they agree to the change to the terms of authorisation for the Applicant. All claim group members for the Cape York United #1 claim, a claim for the area shown on the map below, are invited to attend one or more of the meetings noted below. All meetings start at 10am and finish at 3pm.

Evans reigns supreme at carnival HOUSE spirit was at its very best in Weipa last week as hundreds of students took to the Andoom Oval track for the Western Cape College athletics carnival.

Evans came out top in the points tally, beating Flinders and Duyfken for the honour.

The smaller but plucky Mapoon team performed well in the running events and were the crowd favourites, picking up the House Spirit Award.

In total, there were six new school records broken, with some students lighting up the track.

The 100m sprint finals on Friday saw some impressive results and big margins as the speedy students put on a performance to close out the carnival.

The top performers will now have the chance to represent Peninsula and potentially the state.

That’s starting to change, with five regulars rolling up most weeks, making up about a third of the field.

Last week, Vicki Molloy had a personal best 46 off the stick to win with a nett 30, while Jay Murray (42 gross) and Bernie Single (50) also had great rounds.

Rob Richardson was runner-up with a nett 31. No one found the green on 15, while Mick Foy was nearest the pin on 18.

Stretch Noonan suffered an old age injury and claimed the Bradman’s.

Teen named for Maroons MAROONS coach Paul Green will gamble on teenage rookie Reece Walsh at fullback in Sunday’s must-win Origin II clash at Suncorp Stadium with Queensland making five changes to the side belted 50-6 in the series opener.

C’Zarke Maza appointed to government role

New commissioner

TORRES Strait lawyer C’Zarke Maza has been appointed as the state’s inaugural commissioner for Meriba Omasker Kaziw Kazipa.

He will oversee the decisions on applications for the legal recogni-

tion of Torres Strait Islander traditional child rearing practices.

In doing so, he will help resolve long-standing issues faced by Torres Strait Islander people whose legal identity does not reflect their cultural identity.

“Mr Maza has extensive experi-

ence in law, advocating for, and engaging with, Torres Strait Islander people; and has a deep understanding of the traditional child rearing practice,” Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Craig Crawford said.

Mr Maza has spent the best part

of a decade working as the regional manager of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Service (ATSILS).

He was responsible for establishing a regional office on Thursday Island and satellite office in Bamaga, and advocating for the

rights of Indigenous people in the Torres Straits and NPA. Mr Maza’s job in the Torres Strait is about to become redundant as the ATSILS contract runs out at the end of the month, much to the disappointment of locals.

Interim legal service to fill void as ATSILS finishes up A TEMPORARY deal has been struck with the Queensland Indigenous Family Violence Legal Service to provide interim legal services to the Torres Strait and NPA as ATSILS prepares to depart.

QIFVLS will operate from offices in Bamaga and Thursday Island, and provide outreach support to the Outer Islands, ensuring all communities have access to culturally appropriate legal services, preventive legal support and community legal education.

The Torres Strait Regional Authority said a tender for core legal services was underway to deter-

mine a legal service provider for the region for the next four years.

The ATSILS contract was not renewed, despite a successful run in the region for the past decade.

TSRA chair Pedro Stephen said: “Legal services is crucial in our region and the TSRA supports access to quality, timely and culturally appropriate legal representation, advocacy and support for our people.

Boarding school celebrates major upgrade CULTURAL dancing from Torres Strait boarders and their families helped officially open new facilities at Mount St Bernard College earlier this month.

The Herberton Catholic school celebrates 100 years of service and spent $1.25 on a contemporary facelift to improve the facilities for students and staff.

Bishop of Cairns James Foley and Cairns Catholic Education executive director Bill Dixon were among the official attendees.

Principal Ian Margetts said the new facilities helped to support both teaching and learning, with staff able to access technology provisions and students learning in a comfortable environment.

“The upgrade to specialist teaching spaces will enhance the college’s curriculum delivery in its areas of strength,” he said.

“Having a high First Nations student population, students can enjoy, experience success, and share culture in these practical

spaces, with a contemporary approach.

“The updated facilities have also allowed co-curricular opportunities to be offered.

“There is now an art club, and First Nations students regularly visit the music, drama and dance room to practice their traditional dance.”

Mount St Bernard has a large number of Torres Strait and NPA boarders, who enjoy the rural setting outside of Cairns.

The new commissioner said he was extremely humbled and honoured to be appointed.

“I would like to acknowledge all the years of hard work of those many Torres Strait Islanders and other eminent people who were so critical in bringing about this process that allows for the legal recognition of our Ailan Kastom,” Mr Maza said.

“This important legislation and the office are the first of their kind and I feel privileged to be a part of this significant landmark in our history.

“The Torres Strait culture to this day continues to be alive and strong and I am committed to fulfilling the task towards the legal recognition of our traditional child rearing practices.”

Member for Cook Cynthia Lui said the appointment meant the state was a step closer towards allowing people to apply for legal recognition of the traditional child rearing practice.

“If granted, it means they can get a birth certificate that reflects their lived identity, and opens easy access to government services such as financial support and school enrolment.”

Vaccination rate lifts but more are needed: doctor A TWO-WEEK program that delivered vaccinations to Thursday, Horn and Hammond islands wrapped up last week.

Vaccination teams delivered AstraZeneca second doses and Pfizer first and second doses on all three islands.

Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service executive director of medical services Tony Brown said more than 1600 people across all three islands had received a first dose of vaccine.

“That’s about 60 per cent of the total eligible population aged 16 and over,” he said.

“Given the challenges our teams have faced in terms of some vaccine hesitancy, as well as some community complacency because there have been no COVID-19 cases in our region, it’s not a bad outcome but still not as high as we would like.

“I continue to encourage and urge people to be vaccinated. It’s safe, it’s free and it’s important to protect all our communities.

“And make sure you have the second dose for maximum protection.”

Dr Brown said the vaccina-

tion teams would be returning to Thursday, Horn and Hammond islands during July to deliver the second dose of Pfizer vaccine to those who had their first dose.

“Going forward, anyone in our communities who did not receive a vaccination whilst our teams were in their communities, with either their first or second dose, can contact their local health facility and a vaccination will be arranged for them,” he said.

This week, teams will move to Erub (Darnley), Masig (Yorke) and Iama islands from Monday to Friday to deliver the first dose of Pfizer vaccine to residents on those islands. One team will be on Erub (Darnley) from Tuesday to Friday.

A second team will deliver vaccinations to Masig (Yorke) Island on Monday and Tuesday and then Iama from Wednesday to Friday.

“Next week, one team will move to Badu Island from June 28 to July 2, while a second team will visit Mer (Murray) Island on the same dates,” Dr Brown said.

StraitTALKIN’ NEWS IN BRIEF Telstra outage in region A FAILED air conditioner on the mainland resulted in telecommunications chaos for the Torres Strait over the weekend.

Telstra regional general manager Rachel Cliffe said the air conditioning system at the Batavia Downs exchange failed, which damaged some transmission equipment.

“A technician is currently on site and is working to repair services,” she said at lunchtime on Monday.

The mobile outage impacted customers on Yorke Island, Badu Island, Dauan Island, Boigu Island, Darnley Island, Saibai Island, Mabuiag Island, Moa Island, Yam Island, Sue Island, Stephens Island, Coconut Island and Maer Island.

Phone and internet services on Thursday Island were also affected.

Telstra contacted Cape York Weekly midafternoon yesterday to say that services had been restored in the Torres Strait.

NPA ready for festival

Torres Shire mayor Vonda Malone is now fully vaccinated after two doses.

ALL roads lead to Bamaga this weekend for the annual NPA Cultural Festival.

Torres Strait hip hop artist Mau Power will headline the entertainment at the twoday event, starting Friday.

The free event at Yusia Ginau Oval will feature cultural dancing, sideshows, arts and crafts, a float parade and live music.

The fireworks display will be a must-see event.

A warm welcome for new citizens ELEVEN new Australians were naturalised at a Torres Shire Council ceremony last week.

Mayor Vonda Malone said it was a special occasion for the new citizens and their families.

“They are all residents who have been living in our community and making it a better place.

Having that rich multiculturalism makes us a little bit more powerful,” she said.

Cr Malone said new citizens came from the Phillipines, Japan, India and Poland.

“I know that they will be made to feel at home in the Torres Strait.”

Apudthama Brothers too strong in Island of Origin STILL mourning the passing of his father, Windsor Bowie played some of his best rugby league to lead the Apudthama Brothers to victory in the weekend’s Island of Origin on Badu.

The solidly-built outside back was the NPA side’s player of the tournament according to coach Tetsuo Nakachi.

Balimore Broncos won their round match against Apudthama on Friday, but the Brothers bounced back to win six straight games, including a 38-12 triumph in the grand final.

The Goemu Bau Raiders and Arkai Brothers were knocked out in the semi-finals, while Roxin Eagles and Badu United missed out on the playoffs.

Exhibition launches with a bang THE highly anticipated 150ZK Truth Telling: Coming of the Light 150 Years (150ZK) exhibition was officially opened with great fanfare at the Gab Titui Cultural Centre on Thursday night.

Commemorating 150 years since Coming of the Light, the exhibition is the result of a successful collaborative curatorial project with Torres Strait Artists, Badu Arts, Erub Arts and Moa Arts.

It investigates the impact of the London Missionary Society and Christianity on Torres Strait Islanders and the region’s way of life.

After a moving Ailan hymn by the Kulkalgaw Choir, an official opening by TSRA board member for Mabuyag Cygnet Repu, keynotes by Kapua Gutchen Snr, Gabriel Bani and Jimmy K Thaiday, and a stunning performance by Boigu Island’s Malu Kiai dance team, the gallery opened, and visitors explored the exhibition for the first time.

TSRA chair Pedro Stephen said

“the Torres Strait Regional Authority is proud of the iconic exhibition”.

“Coming of the Light is an annual milestone event for Torres Strait Islanders and this exhibition infused culture, art and heritage with religion to explore concepts of identity, faith and tradition.

“It is important that as Torres Strait Islanders, we reflect on our history and what has impacted on our culture and Ailan Kastom.

“One of these impacts is the Coming of the Light and this exhibition has allowed our people to observe history and reflect on their own relationship with Christianity.

“I commend the Gab Titui Cultural Centre team, the Artists and Art Centres who have contributed to the exhibition.”

The 150ZK exhibition will be on show at the Gab Titui Cultural Centre until August 21.

Exhibition catalogues, merchandise and memorabilia are now available to purchase in store.
