Debacle finally over for Cape roadhouse
Archer gets tower By MATT NICHOLLS
A TELSTRA 4G mobile phone tower will finally be installed at the Archer River Roadhouse after years of lobbying and a number of false starts. The announcement was made in Cairns last week by Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch, along with Minister Mark Coulton. It has been two years and two months since the announcement that Archer River would be getting a phone tower, only for owners Brad and Modena Allan to find out it would be an Optus satellite tower, which would be of no use to most Cape York locals. Musgrave Roadhouse was also among the locations listed in the March 2019 announcement for the federal government’s Blackspot Funding Program and also had to reject the offer of an inferior Optus tower. However, Musgrave Roadhouse was not included in last week’s announcement. Mr Entsch said: “This takes 4G to the Archer and there’s more money in the budget ... we expect Musgrave to be next in line. I’m already talking to Telstra about it.” “I want Musgrave, along with Palmer River and the Lion’s Den.” In making the announcement last Wednesday, Mr Entsch also said a phone tower would be erected at Cow Bay, near the Daintree Rainforest. There were mixed responses from both roadhouses regarding the phone tower news. Continued – Page 2

Key tourist hotspots still without phone reception From – Page 1 “It’s a good thing for us,” said Archer River Roadhouse’s Brad Allan last week. “We’ve been pushing for it for quite a few years.” Archer River currently relies on satellite internet which is slower than 4G and costs more for data. The roadhouse had to create a special wifi network for visitors to comply with COVID-Safe rules requiring visitors to check in with an app. “That has cost us money and we’re only trying to do the right thing when it comes to the rules around COVID,” Mr Allan said. At Musgrave Roadhouse, coowner John McDowall was livid he missed out. “We were promised funding more than two years ago; only
for them to tell us it was going to be Optus, which would have been completely useless for all locals and most tourists,” he said. “I’m happy that they got it at the Archer but we need a tower here, too.” Mr McDowall said he wasn’t concerned about a lack of 4G at the roadhouse, but wanted phone reception to improve safety in the Cape. “We get more cars on the road every year and there’s no reception from Laura to Coen. There are times when people need to call triple zero,” he said. “I’ve had Telstra people here before telling me that if they put a tower on Bamboo Range they’d probably cover most of that territory, including us and Hann River Roadhouse.”

COULD Cape York play a role in Australia’s newest defence program? Last week, it was announced that Australia is assembling a new space division comprising military officers from the army, navy and air force to better protect satellites from attack. The space division will be established within the Royal Australian Air Force headquarters in Canberra early next year. It may pave a way for RAAF Base Scherger to be a tactical site for future programs.
The chief of the air force, Mel Hupfeld, said guaranteeing access to the “contested domain” of space was becoming increasingly important. “However, this does not mean that defence encourages the militarisation of space,” Air Marshal Hupfeld said. “All space operations are conducted consistent with international and domestic legal obligations.” Defence will invest $7 billion in space capabilities over the next 10 years. The shadow treasurer, Jim Chalmers, confirmed Labor sup-
ported the additional spending. “Clearly our defence force needs to maintain capability and clearly the definition of capability changes very rapidly when it comes to defence,” he said. “There are new frontiers in defence technology all of the time, and any country like ours investing so heavily in our defence needs to keep up with those developments and ideally get ahead of them. “If the developments in technology require us to invest in those areas then so be it.” Air Marshal Hupfeld said satellite technologies were used
daily to gather information about the weather, navigation and geospatial intelligence. “Defence is delivering capabilities including space domain awareness, sovereign controlled satellite communications and space-based Earth observation, and navigation,” he said. Air Vice-Marshal Cath Roberts will head the new division. “To reach for the stars and actually get there is a phenomenal feeling,” she said. “As an aerospace engineer I have always been fascinated by space – the ultimate highground.”

he told Cape York Weekly just on the other side of Musgrave Roadhouse last week, heading towards Coen. The 75-year-old said he had already ridden to the Tip, but did it in a convoy that had support vehicles carrying his gear.
“This time I’m doing it on my own and I’m loving it thus far,” he said with a smile. Peter urged motorists travelling on the roads to slow down a little when they spot him to reduce dust and increase safety. “So far, you’re the only one
that has pulled over and said hello and had a chat,” he said. “I’m going to head to Lockhart River and Iron Range and then come across Frenchman’s and head north. “It’s not a hard ride; the road is pretty flat.”

Torres Strait residents wary of vaccines TORRES Strait and Northern Peninsula Area residents are being urged to take the opportunity to be immunised against COVID-19 when the vaccination clinic comes to their community. “We recognise there is hesitancy amongst some residents about being vaccinated as we resume the vaccination program rollout in the region,” said Dr Tony Brown, the executive director of medical services for
the Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service. “For instance, while the numbers of people attending our Pfizer vaccination clinic on Thursday Island last week were steady – 288 for the first week – they have not been as large as we might have expected and hoped for. “The recent uncertainty relating to the AstraZeneca vaccine has contributed to this hesitancy.
“However, we believe there is also an element of complacency creeping into our communities because we have not yet had a single local case of COVID-19 in our health service region. “But to assume that this will continue to be the case is just plain false security. “The COVID-19 situation in Papua New Guinea continues to pose a risk to our communities in the Torres Strait.
“Eventually, the borders of Australia also will be opened to the rest of the world for free travel and then COVID-19 has the potential to spread through the community.” “We have seen in India currently, and in other parts of the world, just how quickly the COVID-19 situation can escalate out of control. “Immunisation remains the safest way forward.”

This year, both the flu vaccine and COVID-19 vaccines are available and it is important that people speak to their vaccination provider to manage the timing of both vaccines. It is recommended that the flu vaccine and COVID-19 vaccine should be administered at least 14 days apart. NQPHN chief executive Robin Whyte said it was important that residents don’t get complacent when it comes to getting vaccinated against the flu each year.

ELIDA Faith believes she is a better candidate as a result of her experience from running last time against Warren Entsch. Announced last week as the Labor candidate for the next federal election, Ms Faith said she had learnt a lot from the 2019 attempt and vowed to go one better this time around. “It’s take two for me and I’m just really looking forward to getting stuck in again,” she told Cape York Weekly. “You think you know your community fairly well but I learnt so much more when I was the candidate last time. “Talking to businesses, people on the street ... that’s going to put me in a really good place going into this candidacy.” Ms Faith said she wanted to represent the Leichhardt electorate in Canberra, from Cairns all the way to the Cape and Torres Strait. The federal election could be held any time between July and May next year, with the decision to be made by Scott Morrison. “Who knows when; that’s the million dollar question,” said the Labor hopeful. Cape York Weekly attended the announcement for Ms Faith’s candidacy in Cairns, led by Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese.
Pontoon work to start soon WAVE attenuation equipment and other parts for the new Weipa pontoon have started to arrive in town, with work expected to start on the project soon. The Evans Landing boat ramp pontoon has been deemed as unsafe by local boat users for several years and it was last year announced that the state government would upgrade it to help cope with brutal easterly winds. The project is due to be completed by the end of July, according to the government.

Elida Faith has been chosen as Labor’s candidate for Leichhardt at the next federal election.
“I’m not saying it’s going to be easy, but I think it’s time Warren retired,” she said at the press conference. “We need new energy in this seat, a local who knows what locals want. “I am a working mum, a wife and I’m passionate about our community.” Ms Faith said social housing, especially in Indigenous
communities, was firmly on her radar, as well as improved telecommunications in remote areas, pointing to the debacle in Lockhart River. She encouraged Cape York residents to reach out if they had issues that needed attention. Ms Faith credited her Centrelink career as the fire behind her second tilt at the federal seat. “Working with some of Aus-
tralia’s most vulnerable people every day, listening to stories of struggle is one of the reasons I am here today,” she said. “I was a single mum, I have felt that struggle and it’s not a nice experience. “We need to start rebuilding our community; we need affordable housing, affordable child care for every Far North Queenslander.”
METALLICA Minerals is about to launch the latest phase of its Cape Flattery silica sands project on the east coast. Company chairman Theo Psaros went on a tour of the region in preparation for 82 exploration holes to be drilled in July. “We completed a small drilling project last year and we have plans to inspect the resource,” he said. Early indications are that the silica content of the sand at Cape Flattery was of a high grade, given its proximity to Mitsubishi’s existing operation that exports three million tonnes per year. “A ninety nine per cent silica content is very impressive,” Mr Psaros said. “We’re confident in the quality and are looking at new shipping options.”

Bramwell ready for a record year By MATT NICHOLLS
IT doesn’t matter if you’re a tourist or a local, do yourself a favour and head to Bramwell Station for at least one night this year. One of Cape York’s treasured destinations, the Bramwell Tourist Park continues to get better with each season. Managed by former jockey and music promoter Ken Godfrey, there will be live entertainment at Bramwell every night during the tourist season. Cape York Weekly just travelled from one end of the Cape to the other and stopped in at Bramwell to enjoy the country hospitality. Not only has Ken made massive improvements to the facilities at the tourist park, with the support of owner Wendy Kozicka, but the quality of performance was terrific.

All-rounder Robbie McGowan describes himself as “the Ed Sheeran of pensioners” and he’s probably not far off that. But his laid-back style and set

left, but the sticky date pudding was a great way to wind up the evening. “Last year was tough with COVID but we did get a lot of tourists come in late,” said Ken, who has been running the tourist park for a decade. “We think this year will break all the records based on the tour groups we’ve got coming through and some of the bookings.” While rooms might be hard to get, there’s no shortage of camping spots on the property, which has been operating since the 1930s. “At $25 per car we’re cheap to camp and that includes the show at night,” Ken said. “We’ve got a licensed bar and plenty of food so it’s a great place for tourists to stop by and a great place for locals from Weipa to spend the weekend here.”
NEWS IN BRIEF Euthanasia bill this week A BILL to establish Voluntary Assisted Dying laws will be introduced to parliament this week. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the bill’s introduction fulfilled a commitment she made to the people of Queensland prior to the state election in October. “For many, this will be the most important work this parliament will do,” the Premier said. “We’re committed to delivering a $171 million investment in palliative care options but many people who have watched a loved one suffer feel passionately that there must be a dignified alternative. “Equally there are those whose opposition is as deeply and sincerely felt. “That is why, when the time comes, Government MPs will vote according to their conscience.”

A CAMPAIGN to lure thousands of workers from across Australia to take a tourism job in regional Queensland includes Cape York. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk last week announced a $7.5 million package to address a critical shortage of workers at tourism businesses in regional Queensland. “We live in one of the most beautiful places in the world. This campaign will give Queenslanders and other Australians even more reasons to come to work in paradise,” she said. “Right across regional Queensland, there is strong demand for workers. “From chefs, waiters and bartenders through to tour guides and deckhands on the Great Barrier Reef, there are plenty of great jobs up for grabs.” The Premier said the government would deliver a $1500 incentive and free travel for workers taking up a tourism job in regional Queensland from Mackay north to our tropical hot spots to west of Toowoomba, including the outback.
Should I invest in apartments or houses? THIS is a popular debate! Apartments are more affordable price-wise and are often in more established areas, so they should do well capital growth-wise – well in theory! But apartments are terrible for cash flow because you have to contribute to body corporate fees to maintain the communal property (lifts, pools, driveways, gyms etc). Often apartments break my Golden Rule #2 – Make sure the property pays for itself! The other pain with apartments is that you can do very little with them. Internal renovations only. No extensions. No external makeovers (without the agreement and financial commitment of the other owners). I think of apartments not as real homes, but rather “concrete boxes in the
sky”. Because that’s what they are. Theoretically, they should not go up much at all because land goes up in value, and structures go down, and apartments have tiny land components
and are almost entirely a structure. But in reality, that doesn’t happen. Probably because they will always be the cheaper alternative for those who can’t afford a house in the area. So the house prices
will drag the apartments along with them. In practice, we know that apartments don’t perform as well capital growth-wise as houses in the same suburb do. So houses win for capital growth. And in practice, we know that houses in the same suburb deliver a better net cash flow return because they have no body corporate middle man to pay. So houses win! But there is one exception – when you can buy the ENTIRE apartment block at once. Then you are the body corporate and there is no middle man. Then you’re getting the BEST possible return from a piece of land. So. Stick to houses until you’re rich enough to buy the whole apartment building. Simple. – Daimien Patterson

ROADWORKS are ploughing ahead on the Peninsula Developmental Road as Cape York prepares for a bumper tourist season, but not all the key access roads are being maintained. The PDR comes under the jurisdiction of the Department of Transport and Main Roads, but most of the other main roads in the Cape are controlled by Cook Shire Council. Cape York Weekly drove from Laura to Weipa and then from Weipa to Punsand Bay last week. By far the worst roads were those looked after by Cook Shire. The Cooktown-based council usually contracts out the work to
other councils and stations, but have yet to give the green light to works this year. The Aurukun access road might be sealed for the last 80km or so, but the first 25km is dirt and also on Cook Shire land.
The road was in a disgraceful condition last week, despite the fact the PDR was as smooth as a highway. Bramwell Station is usually contracted to do the bulk of the Bamaga Road, from the “Y” on
the PDR up towards the Jardine River Ferry. The men are ready to work and spend months away from home keeping the road in good condition for travellers, but Cook Shire Council has yet to give them the green light. “The longer the wait the more money they save,” one source told Cape York Weekly. “Having said that, Cook Shire is probably waiting on funding from the state government to fix the roads.” While the roads from Laura to the Tip were all passable for just about every vehicle, there were some hairy moments for motorists, with a large number of washouts and pot holes in need of repair.

This prompted a quick reshuffle from Northern Beaches Christian School principal Tim Watson and tour company Red Earth, who managed to cobble together an alternative trip to Far North Queensland. Cape York Weekly spotted the students setting up tents at the Laura rodeo grounds last week
and stopped to see what they were up to. “We’ve got two groups of students from Years 9 to 11,” Mr Watson said. “There are 18 of us here and another group out elsewhere.” The principal said being based in Sydney’s northern beaches meant students were
often shielded from remote Indigenous communities and the school had developed a cultural immersion program to further their education. The students spent time at Mossman Gorge and were able to see the Aboriginal rock art at Laura during their trip to the Cape.

Numbers down at grazing forum THERE were more staff and guest speakers than farmers at last week’s Cape York Grazing Forum at the Laura rodeo grounds. Cape York Weekly popped in for a gander on Tuesday, expecting around 80 graziers from the region. The number was about a quarter of that. Moonlight walk raises $5k MORE than 60 people walked the 4km around Weipa’s golf course on Saturday night to raise funds and awareness for MS Queensland. Organiser Sam Kilroy said she was happy with the numbers in what was the first event of its kind in Weipa. “It was a really good atmosphere and it was a typical Weipa event with lots of community support,” she said. “The community was generous with donations for raffles and we had good volunteer numbers.” Ms Kilroy said more than $5300
was raised to help people with Multiple Sclerosis, as well as help find a cure. “We’re still adding it up but that’s a good amount raised,” she said on Sunday morning. The MS Moonlight Walk is an initiative that has been rolled out across the country, with thousands participating in a walk in Brisbane. Ms Kilroy said she wasn’t sure if another one would be staged in Weipa but suggested it could be held every couple of years. “Seeing those lanterns light up the course was pretty spectacular.”

Maintenance dredging notice
NORTH Queensland Bulk Ports, which looks after the Port of Weipa, is in line to receive a gong at this year’s Queensland Reconciliation Awards. NQBP is one of four finalists in the business category and was recognised for its Reconciliation Action Plan. The Northern Peninsula Area Licensing Muster Initiative was also named as a finalist in the partnership category. The 2021 finalists include organisations helping to close the gap by improving access to health services, schools championing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages and businesses increasing cultural competency training and employing more First Nations people. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the initiatives of the 2021 finalists promote and enhance reconciliation in their communities. “Queenslanders continue to pave the path toward reconciliation, amplifying First Nations voices and creating a fairer, more respectful state,” she said. The 2021 Queensland Reconciliation Awards will be announced at a ceremony in Townsville next month, coinciding with National Reconciliation Week.

April - May 2021 | Alert for Weipa community North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation (NQBP) will undertake maintenance dredging from late April at the Port of Weipa. Dredging will also be completed at Amrun on behalf of Rio Tinto. The project will take up to four (4) weeks to complete. The dredge vessel TSHD Brisbane, as well as support vessels, have restricted manoeuvring capability. Local and visiting boaties are asked to take care and notice of all warning flags and lights. Maintenance dredging needs to be carried out to ensure that safe, navigable shipping depths are maintained. Environmental controls and management measures will be implemented throughout the program to minimise the risk of any potential impact on the marine environment.

Optometrists have NPA kids in their sights FIVE optometrists from Queensland University of Technology recently visited the Northern Peninsula Area and provided free eye tests for children. “The aim was to provide a service to the kids to do comprehensive vision testing and to understand the extent of any uncorrected vision problems that may be in the community,” said Dr Scott Read, Associate Professor at QUT’s School of Optometry and Vision Science. The optometrists conducted more than 250 tests on children aged 5 to 15. The trip was sponsored by Bamaga Enterprises Ltd. “We are still analysing the data in terms of results, but we will provide a report back to the community with the overall prevalence results from the study,” Dr Read said.
“All the individual reports are done, and the results were given to the parents and carers of the children. Referrals were also provided for children with significant eye conditions needing follow-up. “Any of the kids found to be needing glasses will be provided with two free pairs: one pair for home and one separate pair for school. All of the participating children were also given a free pair of sunglasses.” Chris Foord, general manager of Bamaga Enterprises, said the community-owned Indigenous organisation was proud to support such an important project. “Education is vital for our local children and being able to see as well as possible is important for a positive schooling experience,” he said.

Co-captain wins comp KRIS Brooks had a nett 70 to win Saturday’s stroke competition at the Carpentaria Golf Club. The co-captain beat Jim Taylor (nett 71) in the Weipa Bakery-sponsored event. Brooks also had the nearest to pin on the 7th, while Terry Oberleuter was closest on the 18th. This Saturday is the May monthly medal, with tee times from 11.30am. Players are asked to register online or at the club before 5pm Friday, and should be at the club 30 minutes prior to tee time.
Busy mum draws inspiration from pupils Tell us a little about yourself? I AM Yasmine Kemmerling and I’m 42 years old. I am a married mother of three daughters. I work at Western Cape College in the special education unit with our amazing deaf students, who are inspiring. What made you start running/ walking? I STARTED running for fitness, but soon realised it was a good way to offload any stress that I gather from the daily grind of being a busy full-time working mum and wife. It is the perfect outlet to clear my mind and refocus. Do you prefer morning or night exercise? I DON’T mind both, although I do prefer early morning runs (if I get adequate sleep).
We’re pretty blessed up here to get some amazing sunrises and sunsets, so that’s definitely a good incentive to do a dawn or dusk run. Do you have a pre or post workout routine? MY pre-running routine is done usually the night before – some yoga strengthening and gentle
hip, ankle and knee conditioning exercises. Just before my run a few gulps of water, couple of grapes and a revvie (if it’s a long run). Best piece of exercise advice you have ever been given? BEING positive about your strengths are important, but being positive about your weaknesses are just as important. Embrace your flaws and use them to improve your situation. Favourite music while running? I’M pretty eclectic when it comes to music. I like fast paced techno and anything with upbeat, empowering lyrics. Who inspires you? MY students inspire me. Being deaf is their strength and they never let it hinder them. They put 100 per cent into every swim-
ming carnival, cross country and athletics carnival at school. Their positive attitude to life is my inspiration. What do you get most out of your run/walk ? RUNNING is my outlet. When I have an overload of thoughts, worries and concerns, running frees up my headspace and re-energises me. What does a typical week look like for you? A TYPICAL week for me is exhausting. But not in a bad way. It’s about finding balance. Know yourself enough to be aware of when you need to slow down and when you need to level up and get things done. These Weipa Running Festival profiles will run in the lead-up to this year’s July 11-25 event.

Josh gets his first win WEIPA boxer Josh Balodis won his first fight on Saturday night in Townsville. The heavyweight won by unanimous decision against Jake Lovell at the Centenary Hotel. With coach Scott Wallace in his corner, Balodis was rapt after winning what was just his second career bout. Josh weighed in at 104kg, while his opponent tipped the scales at 99kg.
Racing returns this Friday AFTER sitting out last year due to COVID-19, Weipa’s BMX racers are keen to return to the track this Friday night. A small group of parents and community members have spent the last few weeks preparing the
track and canteen in preparation for the BMX opening night. Club president Scott Barton said he was worried that racing might not go ahead due to a lack of volunteers, but was rapt that a handful had stepped up.
“We’re a small club but we’ve got 50 kids registered for Friday and we’re expecting a lot more once we kick things off,” he said last week. “It’s all about the kids and giving them something to do.”
Racing will be held every Friday night until the season ends, with breaks in the school holidays. Spectators are encouraged, with the canteen renowned for its burgers.
