Jo Ross loves everything about Mapoon. The town, the school, the remote lifestyle. On her days off she heads up the Wenlock or Ducie River chasing big jewfish, like this one, a personal best 132cm catch.

Principal loves the Cape lifestyle

M

APOON’S school has just about doubled in size since Jo Ross arrived a little more than six years ago.

However, it’s still a small school and a tight knit community, which suits the principal just fine.

Technically, Jo’s title is head of Mapoon campus at Western Cape College, but in effect she’s the boss of four teachers and five teacher aides at the remote school.

While it was the job that brought Jo to Mapoon, it’s the Cape York lifestyle that has her entering her seventh year at the school.

“I just loved the look of the place from the very start,” she said.

“I love that the bush and the beach are so close together.”

A keen angler, days off mean time out on the water.

You’ll see Jo’s picture in Cape York Weekly’s brag board often, usually holding a massive jewfish from the Wenlock or Ducie River.

“To have access to those wild rivers on your doorstep is a real privilege,” she said.

“When it’s flat out front it’s great to catch trevally and fingermark.”

Mapoon is the eighth small

school that Jo has been in charge of and her journeys have taken her to every corner of Queensland.

Birdsville, Horn Island, Mount Surprise, Cherbourg and a few places in the Darling Downs – Jo has seen more than most.

“I love working in rural and remote schools,” she said.

“I even did a stint as an advisory principal for a lot of little schools out west.”

But for now, Mapoon is her pride and passion.

“We have a tidy little school and it’s grown quite a bit,” she said.

“When I started there were 36 kids and now there are 64.

“You can put that down to the new homes that have been built there and the families who have been created.”

Jo said she doesn’t have a dedicated class each day, but spends about three-quarters of her day with students, either in a classroom or in special groups.

“Small schools are great for tailoring education,” she said.

“We also need to prepare them for high school.”

Mapoon’s school stops at Year

6, which means students then have to move to Weipa or head off to boarding school.

“No matter what school it is a big change from primary to secondary. We talk about it a lot and early,” Jo said.

“A lot of work is around the readiness – being independent, reliable, responsible, focused on your learning and knowing not to be shy to speak to new people.”

It’s a system that works, judging by the feedback from Weipa teachers, who say that Mapoon students are among their best.

By working together and sharing ideas we can make progress and create change and success for all.

Chairwomen pave strong future

NSPIRED by the influential women in their lives, Marie Pitt and Florence Charger are now inspiring the next generation.

The two chairs at Western Cape Communities Trust – Marie is the head of the main trust and Flo leads the coordinating committee – are out to pave a stronger future for Traditional Owners.

“When I was young there wasn’t much opportunity,” Marie said of growing up in Napranum, then known as Weipa South.

“Being a part of the WCCCA has built a lot of confidence in myself and confidence is a big plus for us – we should help our people to speak up.”

Marie said her older sister was an inspiration when growing up and that she hoped she was now a strong leader in her own right.

“What makes me proud is that I get to represent all of us as part of the 11 Traditional Owner groups,” she said.

“We talk and work together for our people.”

Marie is a proud Peppan woman who values her connection to country, which is located in the area around RAAF Base Scherger.

“It’s important that we get out on country and talk, have campfires and engage with our young ones.”

Flo, or Aunty Flo as most refer to her, is a Taepadhighi/ Mpakwithi woman who was born at Mapoon before her family was forcibly removed by the Queensland government.

“They sent families to all parts of Queensland, including Cairns, Townsville, Weipa, the NPA and cattle stations,” she said.

“Our family was sent all the way to Stanthorpe.”

For those who haven’t been to Stanthorpe in the state’s southeast, it’s a fair bit colder than Cape York as temperatures drop below zero in the winter.

However, the Chargers made the best of the situation they were dealt and Flo said her mother Joyce was an inspiration.

and committees. She encouraged us to take part in the community,” Flo said.

Her mother also made a decision to go back to school and become a teacher when she was in her 40s.

“She started training and secured a job in Napranum and dad stayed in Stanthorpe,” Flo recalled.

“Mum really valued education.”

A young Flo went off to study at university and finished with a degree in Community Development and Aboriginal Studies.

She moved back to Napranum and found an administration job with Comalco.

“I had to ask permission from

the Weipa South council,” she said.

“That’s just the way it was at the time.”

Flo worked in a few different areas but there was always a sense of unfulfillment.

She decided to apply for work with the health department, and was able to deliver health education to the Western Cape for more than 10 years.

Today, she is a role model and mentor for both men and women in the local community.

This month marks 20 years since the Western Cape Communities Co-Existence Agreement was signed by the 11 Traditional Owner groups from the region.

The Traditional Owners entered into an Indigenous Land Use Agreement over the mining lease areas with Comalco, now called Rio Tinto Weipa.

The agreement was registered with the National Native Title Tribunal on August 24, 2001.

Flo was around at the time of the negotiations but said it was her older sisters who were more involved in the Agreement on behalf of the clan group.

“I remember the negotiations took time,” Flo said.

The results have been positive, both Marie and Flo agreed.

“We are better off than we were before,” said Marie.

“But we still have work to do.”

Flo agreed: “It is one of the best agreements in the country and the integrity of the agreement is what makes it so good and strong.

The next challenge is to ensure the next generation of Traditional Owners continue to improve on the foundations that have already been set by their Elders.

“We have still got a lot of work to do,” Marie said.

“There are ways we can be better and do things differently.”

Flo added: “We are strong and we can move mountains if we want to.

“It’s about finding that strength and leadership within ourselves.”

HEN Audi Cigrovski first started working for Rio Tinto – or Comalco as it then was – there was barely a woman in sight when it came to leadership roles.

Fast forward a couple of decades and the Weipa operation has more women in charge than any other time in the company’s history.

It’s a point of pride for Audi, who has been able to rise through the ranks of one of the world’s biggest companies to become a leader of a multi-billion dollar mining operation.

Her official title is Rio Tinto Weipa’s southern operations manager, which, in simple terms, means she looks after Amrun.

It’s been a long journey since bashing up the dirt road to Weipa in a blue and yellow Kombi van after backpacking in Australia.

The famous blue and yellow Kombi that braved the PDR in the late 1990s.

Born in Ireland and raised on a small farm about 20 miles from Dublin, Audi is the youngest of seven children.

Her mum is actually Australian, which means Audi speaks with an Aussie-Irish tongue which features

the best of both accents, depending on your perspective.

Her sister Doris was living in Weipa with her in-laws, who owned the caravan park, so Audi decided to make the Cape her first major stop in Australia.

“When I left Ireland it was -2° at night. When I got to Cairns it was 32°. In Weipa it was 39°,” she said.

That was the beginning of what was supposed to be a 12-month trip before heading back to Ireland.

“I went travelling around in this Kombi and spent time doing backpacker work,” Audi said.

“We were on Fraser Island at the time of the Childers fire that killed those backpackers.”

The Kombi made it to Weipa – although it was a struggle.

“I remember we were going up the Palmerston Range and going full speed and being overtaken by a cyclist,” she said with a laugh.

“Then we got to the PDR and it was all dirt. I hadn’t driven on a dirt road before.

“The only bitumen was a small strip at Coen.”

the second time, it would be the beginning of a long and fruitful relationship with the town.

“I applied for a job at the lab with Comalco as an analyst,” Audi recalled.

“At that point in time there weren’t many permanent roles going so I had to job-share with another lady.”

Tasked with testing bauxite samples and grading the quality of the product was a great introduction to the business and after a couple of years, Audi was given the opportunity to set up a special hygiene lab.

“It was for dust and noise monitoring, which didn’t exist at the time,” she said.

Eventually Audi moved onto the mine site, starting a role as an operator at Andoom on Christmas Day of 2005.

inspiration for all Rio employees “You think they go fast when you first get behind the wheel,” Audi said of driving a mining truck for the first time.

“I remember the trainer took me down the road and we got to 40km/h and I was hanging on to the steering wheel for dear life.”

Even just 16 years ago, women were few and far between, although Audi said she had plenty of support from her male colleagues.

She met her now-husband Dom and they joined the same shift so they could enjoy the Cape York lifestyle on their days off.

Audi ended up landing a gig in dispatch, although it was shortlived as Dom landed a role in Western Australia.

“I ended up back in the lab in WA, which was a step backwards for me,” she said.

“We stayed at Cape Lambert for

10 years and I spent all of them in the lab, albeit in different roles.”

As Rio Tinto Weipa ramped up construction of Amrun, a $2.7 billion project, Audi returned with Dom and landed a role as the marine superintendent.

“I couldn’t believe how much Weipa had diversified,” she said.

“We were having Women in Mining breakfasts and there was a lot more recognition for women in the industry.”

As Rio Tinto pushed roles to Brisbane for its integrated operations team, Audi was able to progress to her current position as manager of southern operations.

“I look after 430-odd employees and that’s a big responsibility,” she said.

“I really enjoy the role and the challenge.”

Audi gave credit to former

GM Dan van der Westhuizen for helping her step into a more senior role.

“What really stuck with me is that he said if you see an opportunity, take it,” she said.

“Have faith in yourself.”

It’s a message Audi now passes on to others as they look to climb the rungs of the Rio Tinto ladder.

For now, she’s happy to be in one of the most senior positions in the bauxite operations.

However, Audi isn’t resting on her laurels.

She’s currently studying so she can one day become an acting general manager, with a view to one day perhaps looking after her own major operation.

“I do have that ambition, which I think is healthy.

“You have to keep growing and learning in this industry.”

Lauren Dibben has loved snakes since she was a teenager and this is her first pet snake, a spotted python named Thor, who still lives on today.

More than just a snake catcher ...

K

NOWN best for her snake catching exploits, there’s more to Lauren Dibben than wrangling the odd reptile.

For years she has been the go-to woman for removing snakes from the yards of Weipa residents.

What many don’t know is that Lauren has two degrees, has more knowledge of the Western Cape ecosystem than most others and is now the owner of a medium-sized business with more than a dozen employees.

Not that she really cares what people know or don’t know.

“Weipa is full of gossip,” she said of the mining town she has called home for most of her life.

“People will judge you for what they think they know.”

What locals should know about Lauren is that she is hard-working and fierce.

means you’ve got to develop a thick skin and Lauren isn’t afraid to bite back if she needs to.

However, in the last six months she’s had to readjust a little.

In September last year she bought out her former boss and took the reins of Ecotone.

Again, it’s not a well-known company among the general Weipa population, but is highly-regarded

by Rio Tinto.

Ecotone is largely a contractor to the mining company, conducting field work on the mining lease to ensure that endangered, protected and vulnerable species are kept out of harm’s way as best as possible.

“I always wanted to work with animals – I didn’t know how I was going to exactly,” Lauren said of growing up in Weipa and attending Western Cape College.

After finishing Year 12 she moved to Townsville to study a Bachelor of Science and Zoology at James Cook University.

It took her a while to land her career job, though.

Billabong Sanctuary, dealing with all kinds of animals – including crocodiles – before moving into surveying work.

In Weipa, she worked for Rob Roy Earthmoving and then held a steady gig with Goodline doing time sheet data entry.

Whenever she could, she worked for Ecotone to follow her passion.

“I spent so much time at Amrun back when it was still South of the Embley,” Lauren said.

“I have probably seen more of that country than any other nonTraditional Owner.”

Legislation requires Rio Tinto to ensure they are not putting species at risk before clearing land for mining and Lauren said the Weipa miner was thorough in its commitment to protecting wildlife such as the palm cockatoo, red goshawk, northern quoll and the black-footed tree rat.

“Some of the stuff we do is really cool and we get to see country that no one else gets to be on,” she said.

“Cape York has one of the most amazing ecosystems and I think we all need to understand it and appreciate it a little bit more.”

In the meantime, Lauren is still happy to be regarded as the “snake catcher lady” and often takes her employees along with her to remove the slithering creatures as a way of teaching.

Her love of snakes was born out of disappointment – after waiting patiently in line at a Hervey Bay wildlife park, Lauren was able to handle a snake briefly until it was no sooner whisked away.

“I was so disappointed I said right then that I wanted a pet snake,” she said.

As a 15-year-old she got her first pet snake, a spotted python named Thor, who still lives on today.

MAYORS and council leaders and staff were put through a jam packed schedule at last week’s regional alliance meeting.

The Torres Cape Indigenous Council Alliance (TCICA) held its first face-to-face meeting for 2021 on Wednesday in Cairns.

Almost 40 mayors, councillors and chief executives from across the Torres Strait, Cape York and Gulf region met to discuss key regional priorities and initiatives.

Weipa Town Authority chair Michael Rowland said it was one of the best regional meetings he had attended.

HEALTH AND EDUCATION LEADERS discussed the need for improved health and education outcomes for local people and TCICA’s approach to working with agencies including Education Queensland and Queensland Health to help address inequalities.

Members noted Education Queensland’s Cape York Education Summit on March 4 and commitments by the department to work with communities to explore different governance models and identify how communities and schools can work better together.

TCICA’s upcoming health forum on April 14 was discussed and agreed that the forum was a great opportunity to collectively understand the direction of health service providers such as the Torres Cape Health and Hospital Service and Apunipima, and to work with regional health partners to help guide the future direction of health service delivery in the region.

VACCINATION COUNCILS heard from Dr Tony Brown and Dr Elizabeth Peach from Queensland Health about plans for the rollout of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccination in the Cape and Torres Strait.

the rollout in the Torres Strait as early as the middle of March.

Queensland Health plans to vaccinate up to 1200 people a week and expects that the vaccination rollout across the Cape and Torres Strait will continue until at least October.

Mayors were assured that the AstraZeneca vaccine has been shown to be very effective and that vaccination staff will be highly trained and skilled.

Health promotion staff will be out in communities soon to start educating people on the vaccine.

POLITICIANS MEMBER for Leichhardt Warren Entsch arrived to discuss matters, including the need for more federal funding for remote Indigenous housing to address longstanding shortfalls, ongoing digital and mobile communications issues in the region, transport infrastructure, including the Peninsula Developmental Road and recent flood damage, and airports.

Mayors acknowledged Mr Entsch’s commitment to recontest the next federal election to

ensure continuity in federal representation as the region recovers from COVID-19.

Leaders also heard from Member for Cook Cynthia Lui on her priorities for the region and to raise state-based issues such as the Local Thriving Communities reform agenda, the rollout of new housing under the current program and the need for a long term commitment from the Commonwealth, and the state’s vision for the economic and regional development of the TCICA region.

Members noted that the Cape, Torres and Gulf Opportunities Plan provided a guide for government investment and economic development activity in the region.

Mayors noted that the state’s ministerial and government champions are yet to be confirmed for all Indigenous communities.

RESILIENCE STRATEGY THE day before the TCICA meeting, leaders participated in a workshop facilitated by the Queensland Reconstruction Au-

thority to start the development of Regional Resilience Strategy and Action Plan.

The action plan is intended to identify a forward program of activity to address social, cultural, economic, natural and environmental resilience issues.

The resilience strategy will be developed alongside the work of TCICA’s newly-appointed QRA-funded regional resilience officer Pip Schroor.

Ms Schroor’s role is to work on the ground with TCICA members to empower them to lead, drive and coordinate resilience activities in their communities and at the regional scale.

This coordinated and collaborative approach to disaster management, climate management and regional resilience building is intended to help build the capability of local governments to participate in resilience planning and reduce the social and economic impacts of disasters.

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS TONY Goode and Allen Cunneen from the Local Government Association of Queensland updated members on recent activity including the progress of priorities identified during the Indigenous Leaders Forum such as advocacy on remote Indigenous housing, land tenure matters, regional connectivity, and the financial sustainability of Indigenous local governments.

Newly appointed Australian Bureau of Statistics officer Mr Bruce Gibson presented to TCICA on his role working with Indigenous communities to help educate people on the importance of participating in the Census so that it more accurately reflects population counts and community demographics.

Leaders were joined for lunch by 51 Far North Queensland Regiment’s new Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Claire O’Neill and officers.

TCICA’s second meeting for 2021 is scheduled for early May.

Queensland Health puts priority on Cape vaccines VACCINATION for COVID-19 will begin on the Torres Strait islands very shortly and Cape York thereafter, subject to the timely arrival of vaccine stocks.

Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service chief executive Beverley Hamerton said stocks of the AstraZeneca vaccine were expected to arrive soon on Thursday Island to be used in the first stage of the vaccination rollout in the region.

“Contingent on these stocks arriving over the next few days, we will be able to get our vaccination program under way,’’ she said on Saturday.

“Given the risk of COVID-19 spreading from Papua New Guinea, we will begin vaccinating in the Torres Strait, starting with health service staff and the entire communities of the islands closest to PNG, including Saibai, Dauan and Boigu.

“We will then move progressively to all the other islands and the Northern Peninsula Area.

“Subsequently, the Cape York rollout will begin at Weipa and Cooktown and then spread progressively to all the other communities in the region.

“Throughout the vaccination rollout, we will be offering vaccination to both health care staff and community members at each location.

“Everyone will need to have two doses of AstraZeneca for full protection, with the doses to be several weeks apart.

“Information will be provided to staff and community members as to when they will need to return for their second vaccination.

“We’ve got our processes and systems ready for this vaccine, and our staff will be lining up for the vaccination and showing leadership for their communities to follow suit.’’

Ms Hamerton said the vaccine would be delivered by trained Immunisation teams to each unique community.

TCHHS executive director of medical services Dr Tony Brown will be one of the first to roll up his sleeve and be vaccinated with the AstraZeneca vaccine as an example for the rest of the health service and communities.

“In my role, I’ve seen firsthand in my time how much of a difference vaccination can make to keeping people safe and healthy,” he said.

“The COVID-19 vaccine is free, safe, effective and is an important step to take to reduce the serious effects of COVID-19 in people who become infected with the virus.

Overwhelming support for family

By MATT NICHOLLS THERE’S something truly special about Weipa when it gets behind a cause.

On Saturday night, the Carpentaria Golf Club was packed to the rafters to show support for the May family.

Last month, Ross May was at work in Weipa and collapsed with what turned out to be a serious brain injury.

His wife Tonia rushed to Townsville to be at his side and has been there ever since.

Residents of Weipa for 25 years, the Mays have contributed more to the local community than most.

So it was fitting that Weipa rallied behind them on Saturday.

Son Chris flew up to Weipa for the occasion and said he was overwhelmed by the generosity of the public, some of whom didn’t even know his family.

“We are really humbled by this turnout and we do want to thank the entire Weipa community for their support,” he said.

“I know mum is blown away by the messages of support.”

A dedicated volunteer army, led by family friend Anne Siegmeier, put the event together and it drew support from dozens of businesses and volunteers.

Live music, raffles, auctions and good times were enjoyed by what was the largest gathering at the golf club for some time.

MEMBER for Cook Cynthia Lui says last week’s trip to Weipa was a “positive experience” and that she left with a better grasp of issues facing the Western Cape.

It was the MP’s first trip to the area after more than 550 days and constituents were happy to have face time with the elected member.

Ms Lui had meetings with Rio Tinto Weipa, police, hospital staff, Western Cape College and Weipa Community Care during the 24-hour visit from Monday to Tuesday.

Perhaps her most important meeting was with members of the Western Cape Chamber of Commerce on Monday night.

In a round-table discussion, Ms Lui was told of the major issues impacting the local business community.

“Child care is right at the top of the list,” chamber president Vance Wallin said.

“It has an impact on just about every business.”

A lack of rental properties was another item tabled as needing urgent priority, as were the

problems encountered with Sea Swift during the wet season.

Ms Lui said she would take the feedback on board and raise the issues with relevant ministers and organisations.

“What was highlighted was the strong community spirit in Weipa,” she said.

“I think we can put some pressure on the federal government to get involved in the child care issue.

“Without child care, you’re putting up a barrier for people that want to work.

“I think the federal government needs to get on board.”

Ms Lui also offered her apologies for the lengthy gap between trips to Weipa and promised to be back again much sooner.

“I’m the only electorate with 13 mayors and one town authority chairman,” she said.

“It’s a big electorate but I will do better to get back here as much as I can.”

Mr Wallin thanked Ms Lui for taking the time to sit down with the chamber and local businesses and hear the issues.

“The important thing now is that we get a response to some of these critical issues,” he said.

“Weipa is at a point where we know the lifespan of the Andoom mine is about 10 years and we want to shore up the town’s future so we aren’t just relying on the Rio Tinto mine.

“Housing and child care are the priorities, but we also need to get moving on having a plan for normalisation.”

Editor’s note: A truce has been struck between Cape York Weekly and Ms Lui based on the MP’s recognition that she needs to visit Weipa more often. We hope to see positive results from this latest trip to the region.

Weipa smashed by wild weather

GOLF clubs around the world spend millions on creating island greens but Weipa was handed one for free on Wednesday as a result of a devastating storm.

More than 160mm was recorded at the Carpentaria Golf Club on Wednesday as wind gusts up to 90km/h smashed the town in what was a third straight day of major storm activity.

“We got 320mm from Monday to Wednesday – it was a good drink,” golf course superintendent Steve Jensen said.

“It was worse than what you’re seeing now. The water was a lot higher.”

The club had to close three holes and restrict cart use from Friday to Sunday to limit further damage to the course.

“It’ll take a while for that water to run away, even with the sun out now,” Mr Jensen said.

Around town, the main street of Weipa resembled a river as rain lashed the Western Cape on Wednesday night.

The winds were so strong that one ship in the channel was pushed off course.

A number of trees and branches came crashing down, although there were no reports of significant damage.

Weipa Town Authority deputy chair Stretch Noonan said the town’s 2020 program to remove as

A 17-YEAR-OLD boy has died in hospital a week after being stung by a box jellyfish, while swimming at a beach near Bamaga.

It is the first recorded box jellyfish fatality since 2006.

The boy was stung while swimming at Patterson Point on February 22.

The Royal Flying Doctor’s Service was called to the scene and the teenager was intubated before he was flown to the Townsville Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit.

Queensland Police said the boy died in hospital on Monday and a report would be prepared for the coroner.

Marine biologist and world-renowned jellyfish ex-

pert Lisa-Ann Gerswhin said the boy’s death was the first recorded box jellyfish fatality in 15 years.

“Unfortunately, that (previous) fatality also occurred in Bamaga,” she said.

Dr Gershwin said box jellyfish were the world’s most venomous animal.

“Chironex are the only animal in the world that kills by causing the heart to lock in a contracted state,” she said.

But, Dr Gershwin said box jellyfish fatalities were avoidable.

“The fundamentally important part of this is about who lives and who dies (and) overwhelmingly it’s people in remote communities who

die. It’s not a physiological difference, but it’s that education around the dangers of stingers that is different,” she told ABC Far North.

“In populated areas where there are stinger nets, people are constantly reminded about the presence of stingers, whereas in remote areas you don’t have that constant reminder.”

Dr Gerswhin said more needed to be done to increase protection against marine jellyfish stings for people living in rural and remote parts of Australia.

“Nobody needs to die from a box jellyfish sting, we know how to avoid stings, we know how to be safe.”

Metro ready to return to mining

A MAJOR bauxite mining operation in Cape York will resume work in April after shutting down early last year due to COVID-19.

Metro Mining hopes to begin shipping bauxite from its Skardon River base by mid-April, with operators to return to the site at the end of this month.

The company was forced to retrench most of its employees last year but around 80 per cent of its 2021 workforce will be the same people they had to stand down.

“Things are looking quite positive for 2021 as we look to shore up buyers for the product,” Metro spokesman Digby McLeay said.

“Around 56 per cent of our 2021 production is contracted under an existing long-term deal with Xinfa.

“We’re hoping to ship 6 million wet metric tons this year, which would be a big

Entsch cancels retirement plans

WARREN Entsch will stand for re-election after deciding to seek another term in government.

This is despite signalling his intent to retire after winning the last election.

“In 2019, on election night, I announced that I would not recontest the next federal election, as I felt the time was right to pursue other interests outside politics,” he said.

“However, that decision was made well before the COVID-19 pandemic was even thought of, or before it reached our shores.

“Our region was one of the first

“Therefore, after careful consideration I have decided to recontest the next federal election which is due to be held before May 2022.”

It’s likely the federal election could be held this year, possibly as early as September or October.

“It is certainly not a decision I

made lightly,” Mr Entsch said.

“There were many sleepless nights and heartfelt discussions with my beautiful wife Yolonde and my family before I finally came to this decision. Sadly, as I said earlier, our community will continue to face many challenges over the next few years as we begin our recovery from the global pandemic.

“It will be a tough road but one we will navigate together.

“I feel it is incumbent on me during these uncertain times to continue to support our community and its residents for as long as it takes along this road.”

NEWS IN BRIEF New GM begins role RIO Tinto Weipa’s new general manager of operations has begun in the role, although is yet to land in Cape York.

Michelle Elvy is being put through her paces in Brisbane after being recruited from BHP. Before joining Rio Tinto, Ms Elvy held a number of leadership roles, including head of integrated operations in Brisbane and most recently, head of operational services for the Belo Horizonte Area in Brazil.

The new GM role is different as it also includes Gove. Ms Elvy is expected to be in Weipa next week.

Croc spotted at Putts Palms A SALTWATER crocodile has been spotted at Putts Palms in Weipa.

The water hole links with Trunding Creek and the croc was seen just before the massive deluge of rain that hit Weipa.

Weipa Town Authority chairman Michael Rowland urged locals to obey signage and avoid swimming in a known croc spot.

SES report covered up REGIONAL mayors are calling on the state government to release a report on a review of the SES as a matter of urgency.

The call came following a meeting of the new Regional Queensland Council of Mayors Incorporated in Mackay last week.

Mackay mayor Greg Williamson, who is chair of the Regional Queensland Council of Mayors, said the yet-to-bereleased report on a review of the SES was presented to the state government in July last year and has never been made public.

“It is very disturbing to have a cyclone hovering off the Queensland coast and to know that a report on the SES has been sitting with the state government for eight months with no action,’’ he said.

“The SES are critical to regional communities during a natural disaster, so it is imperative that we know what this review has recommended.”

Business community throws its support behind voucher program

WEIPA business owners want Rio Tinto to keep its Christmas voucher program for employees after $150,000 was injected into the local economy from December to February.

However, the mining company says it hasn’t yet made a decision as the voucher program was put in place as a result of Christmas parties being scrapped due to COVID. Weipa Gourmet Meats owner Dale Holmquest said his business had been a big winner of the $100 voucher program and said others like him had also benefited.

“We got people in the shop that we don’t usually see and they didn’t just spend the $100, they also spent more,” he said.

“It’s been such a great program for the Weipa business community and should be kept running.”

A company spokesman said Rio Tinto operated the Let’s Keep It Local initiative as part of its reward and recognition program.

“Last year, due to COVID-19 restrictions, holding our annual Christmas functions in 2020 was not feasible,” they said.

Passion for Weipa drives Jaime to leadership roles

T

HE future of Weipa is in strong hands if Jaime Gane continues to develop her leadership skills.

Husband Kurt is her biggest fan and is still amazed by her dedication to her family and community.

“I don’t know how she gets it all done,” he says of her heavy workload as mum, worker and volunteer.

Jaime is best known as an elected WTA member and perhaps as the “ice cream truck lady”.

What many may not know is that she has lived in Weipa since she was two and works around the clock to make her town a better place to live.

Jaime helped revive Western Cape Landcare, spends hours serving the Weipa pottery club and is working on tourism opportunities for the Chamber of Commerce.

She juggles these roles as a mother of two daughters and helps run the family business, Far North Fishing.

“The fishing business is my passion and my dream,” Kurt said.

“But Jaime ends up doing more than 50 per cent of the work in the background. She gets a buzz out of the tourism and visitors to Weipa.”

Weipa Town Authority chairman Michael Rowland believes Jaime is on the right path to be his successor at the next local government election.

“She really brings a passion to the WTA and has a perspective that we haven’t had before,” he said.

“She has a young family and brings a whole dynamic that was missing and was needed.

“What I like most is that she never backs away from a challenge and she’s very honest about what she wants to achieve.”

The WTA members pushed for Jaime to be deputy chair at the first meeting of the new council, however she turned down the offer.

Having just been elected to public office for the first time, she said she wanted more experience in the role before taking on a leadership position.

Jaime Gane is a selfless contributor to the Weipa community and wants to see positive change in her home town.

“She doesn’t want to do anything until she knows she’s the right person for the job,” Kurt said.

“She wanted time up her sleeve because she wouldn’t want to let anyone down.”

Preserving the best qualities of Weipa life and enhancing the shortcomings of the community are what drives Jaime each day, Kurt said.

“We know what Weipa was like when we were kids. It has changed in many ways, but in some ways it hasn’t changed much at all,” he said.

“Jaime just wants what is best for the community. All the stuff she does is not for self gain.”

Chance to hone skills in capital JAIME Gane is one of 12 rural women who will attend a fourday residential leadership and capacity building program in Canberra next week.

The National Rural Women’s Coalition has selected her from an extremely competitive pool of candidates from rural areas of Australia, who are interested in leadership and developing their communities.

The NRWC has developed the unique Women’s Canberra Muster leadership Program over the last five years.

Each year a selected cohort of women gather in Canberra to be inspired, learn, network and grow their leadership skills and give back to their community through a volunteer project of their design.

The successful women will spend a day at Parliament House, including meeting the Minister for Women, Senator Marise Payne.

Participants will implement a leadership project within three months of completing the residential program and report the outcomes back to the group.

“My project idea is all about inspiring and encouraging the next generation of women in our community,” Jaime said.

“My goal is to develop an ongoing leadership program for our high school-aged girls, to build confidence, encourage community engagement, and expose them to positive and passionate female role models, who can inspire them to achieve their dreams.”

NRWC president Leonie Noble will host the women in Canberra and the four days of learning will be facilitated by professional coaches in leadership, advocacy and governance.

Stef O’Kane has set up her own fruit shed at Lakeland, conveniently located at the start of the Peninsula Developmental Road. It has a large range of fruit and vegetables, all grown locally in Lakeland.

Making the best of Lakeland life

L

IVING on a farm in Lakeland is not the same as it was in the 1990s for Stef O’Kane.

There’s now internet access, phone reception, sealed roads, a footy ground and a massive solar farm.

“We’re not even close to being remote any more,” Stef said last week.

“It’s a two-hour drive to Mareeba and in three hours you can be at an international airport.”

Growing up in Lakeland, the road both north and south was a minefield and a landline phone was the best connection to the outside world.

With all that change, Lakeland has become a great place for

people like Stef and husband Garry to raise a family.

They live on the family farm, yet own and operate their individual businesses.

Garry, a fitter and turner from Tully, runs Twenty-Five Designs, serving all of the farms in the Lakeland region.

Stef, a woman of many talents, last year set up a fruit shed on the side of the road.

She sells fruit and veges that are exclusively grown in Lakeland.

In classic Cape York nature, Steffie’s relies on an honesty box system.

“We don’t worry about theft.

If you were worried about it you wouldn’t do it in the first place,” she said.

Steffie’s is well supported and is sure to get plenty of traffic in the tourist season as it is positioned in a prime spot on the Peninsula Developmental Road.

“The problem I have is that our bananas and mangoes are usually grown outside of that tourist season,” Stef said.

“So when we are getting all of that traffic, I have the least amount of stock.”

A fierce advocate for Lakeland life, Stef is the proud secretary of the Lakeland Progress Association, an organisation that looks to host a handful of

events to improve the social life in the town.

“We need to make sure we are bringing people together because otherwise they work all day every day,” she said.

“Not everyone wants to go to the pub so we need to create a few more events to get people out and interacting.”

Allowing for more growth in Lakeland is another priority.

On the land, more water is needed to make the most of the beautiful red soil in the region, but in the town there’s no room to expand.

“We don’t want to become too big but we can’t be turning away families that want to live here,” Stef said.

“But we are working on it.”

Co-organiser Rose Robins said she was overwhelmed by the large turnout to the markets and other activities and hoped the event would continue every year for International Women’s Day.
