Lui bows to pressure after 550-day absence
MP to visit Weipa By MATT NICHOLLS
MEMBER for Cook Cynthia Lui will today land at Weipa Airport for an impromptu visit, some 551 days after her last trip to the town. Her unscheduled visit caught locals off guard and it means that Ms Lui will be unable to have key
meetings with several leaders in the community. Cape York Weekly learned of the visit via third-party sources last week and contacted Ms Lui’s office for a schedule and to organise an interview. However, the second-term MP did not respond.
What can be confirmed is that she will sit down with Rio Tinto Weipa, Western Cape College, Weipa Community Care, staff at the Weipa Hospital and a last-minute gathering with the Chamber of Commerce. Ms Lui will be unable to meet with Weipa Town Authority chair

Michael Rowland, who will be in Cairns for a regional meeting with other Cape York leaders. It is unlikely that she will be driving to Mapoon. Weipa locals will also struggle to get an appointment with the MP as she only advertised the visit on her Facebook page on Saturday.
Those who saw it were urged to contact the office to make an appointment, however the office was closed over the weekend. Cape York Weekly will attempt to organise a sit-down interview with Ms Lui to discuss some of the pressing issues facing the region in 2021 and beyond.

A BOX jellyfish sting in the waters off Bamaga has prompted renewed warnings for Cape York residents to take care. “The recent incident at Bamaga is a timely warning to take precautions when swimming in the sea in any northern waters,” Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service northern director of medical services Dr Marlow Coates said. “We are seeing sightings of both box jellyfish and jellyfish that cause Irukandji syndrome in our waters.” Dr Coates said swimmers
could avoid being stung by wearing stinger protective clothing such a wetsuit or lycra suit, or simply staying out of the water if they had no protective clothing. “If you don’t have a protective suit and you know there could be stingers or jellyfish in the water, just don’t go in,’’ he said.
“It’s also important that people are familiar with resuscitation methods – early resuscitation after major stings from box jellies has saved lives in the past few years.” Dr Coates said the effects of an encounter with a jellyfish could range from receiving a painful sting, right through to a potentially fatal sting from a box jellyfish or one of the jellyfishes causing Irukandji syndrome.” Several types of jellyfish in tropical Australian waters can cause pain. Each requires different treatment.
“It can be difficult to work out which species of jellyfish has caused a sting, so if in doubt, treat as if it was potentially serious,” Dr Coates said. “In terms of treatment for any sting, the priority is to keep the patient stable and safe. Medical advice should always be sought if pain persists.” Soaking the affected area in hot but not scalding water for 20 minutes may relieve the pain. This is not suitable for infants, the very elderly, or those with poor skin condition as hot water may burn the skin.
Public pressure results in 30 new hospital car parks By MATT NICHOLLS
A PUSH by Cape York Weekly to have more car parks created at Weipa Hospital has paid off, as the state government last week announced 30 new all-weather spaces will be built this year. Work on a near 50 per cent expansion in the number of allweather carparks at the hospital is expected to be completed during the second half of the year. Member for Cook Cynthia Lui, who won’t speak to Cape York Weekly but did put her name on a media statement, said the Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service would have an engineering consultant in place to develop a plan for the works by April. “It will take about a month to six weeks to complete the engineering plan,” she said. “Following this, tenders will be called for a contractor to do the works, with completion expected during the second half of the year, weather permitting.’’ Ms Lui said the new allweather carparks would be developed in an open area between the side of the hospital precinct and John Evans Drive. “This area is used by staff during the dry season up to a capacity of about 15 vehicles.
The site of the proposed carpark addition is highlighted in orange at the side of the hospital precinct.
“However, it is dirt ground and gets muddy and difficult to use during wet weather. “The plan is to convert this area into all-weather parking for about 30 cars, maybe a bit more, with lighting and line marking. “This will be a significant addition to the existing all-weather carpark at the front of the hospital that has a capacity of about 75 cars. “I know parking has been an
issue at the hospital in recent months, primarily because of an increase in the number of visiting clinics and the increased delivery of a broad range of other health services. “There are currently an additional $8.86 million worth of works under way, or about to get under way at the hospital, including provision for a CT scanner and a new birthing service, and this will add to the numbers
of people visiting the hospital. “I therefore commend the Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service for its commitment to expand and improve the availability of parking at the hospital to manage increased visitation. “It should also be noted that on-site parking at Weipa hospital is free and will continue to be so – unlike the situation at many larger provincial hospitals.’’

Sea Swift slammed for a failure to provide service By MATT NICHOLLS
NEW arrivals to Weipa this year are still on foot as they wait for their vehicles to arrive on the Sea Swift barge. School teachers, child care workers and hospital staff say they are desperate for their cars and can’t get an answer on when they will arrive. Local businessman Greg Parr said he purchased a boat in the middle of January and still has no idea when it will get to Weipa. “They can’t give me a date. Meanwhile, it’s sitting in the yard getting rained on, probably growing mould as well,” he said last week. “It’s just pathetic.” Mr Parr said he had been using Sea Swift since they first starting doing business in Weipa and claimed that service was the worst it had ever been. “I’m hearing they’ve got 150 cars, boats and trailers in Cairns waiting to come to Weipa,” he said. “Why don’t they put on an
extra barge in the wet season to cope with the increased demand. “We get a wet season every year and the road is always closed to trucks.” Both of Weipa’s car rental companies are also waiting on new vehicles to arrive and demand for hire cars is high due to the new arrivals in town unable to drive their own vehicles that are sitting in Cairns. Sea Swift operations general manager Peter Domenighini said the shipping company deemed vehicles as non-essential freight. “Due to the remote nature of Far North Queensland, the only realistic and reliable transportation mode during the annual wet season is shipping,” he said. “During the wet season, Sea Swift prioritises essential freight such as food, fuel, medicine, and business supplies to ensure ongoing access to essential goods for the remote communities we service. “Private vehicles and recreational vessels do not fall under our essential goods category dur-
ing this period, and we communicate this clearly to our customers on an annual basis and upon booking their freight.” Mr Domenighini said Sea Swift had sent an extra barge to help clear the backlog and had plans for another extra barge to depart Cairns on March 10, but did not say if that would ensure all residents received their boats and vehicles. Mr Parr said since Sea Swift bought out the only competition, Toll Marine, customers had suffered in Weipa. “The ACCC has no spine and should never allowed the takeover to happen,” he said. “The remote customers are the ones that suffer the most.” Mr Domenighini responded by saying that since its acquisition of Toll in 2016, Sea Swift had increased its services to Cape York communities, with two services per week now arriving in Weipa every Monday and Friday. However, Weipa received two, sometimes three barges per
week when Sea Swift and Toll were working in competition. “Despite the need to prioritise essential freight, we would like to reassure Cape York residents that Sea Swift is taking proactive steps to reduce any delays in the delivery of individual, non-essential freight,” Mr Domenighini said on Friday. “The construction of a new vessel – the MV Newcastle Bay II – is due for completion later this year and will increase capacity by 50 per cent, which is a major positive for our Cape York and Torres Strait customers. “We do apologise to our customers for any recent inconvenience experienced in the delivery of non-essential cargo. “As always, the team at Sea Swift is committed to moving our customers’ freight in a timely and safe manner. “Sea Swift are proud to provide vital services and support for communities across our region, and we look forward to serving these communities long into the future.”

Weipa graduate invited to Committee yet to pick speak to next generation event date GRADUATE Rio Tinto Weipa apprentice Rachel Brooker has shared her story with around 100 high school students at a special breakfast in Cairns. Ms Brooker was a guest panelist at the 2021 Brekkie with the Tradies event hosted by TAFE Queensland and the Business Liaison Association. Attended by Year 10, 11 and 12 high school students from the Cairns region, the breakfast event allowed students to hear from a range of experienced tradies in electrical trades, construction and carpentry, plumbing, refrigeration, engineering, automotive and other trades. Ms Brooker, who recently completed her HEQ (heavy equipment) apprenticeship at Weipa, was the recipient of two awards in the 2020 TAFE Queensland Cairns Trade Excellence Awards, including the Female Trades Student of the Year award and the Engineering Mechanical Apprentice of the Year award. “I was so grateful to have the opportunity to share my journey as a young apprentice,” she said. ”Judging by those who were at the event, the next generation of tradies are enthusiastic, sharp and keen to get moving with their ca-

reers. Working at Weipa has been a great opportunity for me and I’m hoping I inspired a few people to think about the opportunities available to them in some of the more remote parts of Queensland.” TAFE Queensland building and infrastructure business Manager Ryan Arthurson said Ms Brooker was an inspirational guest speaker. “Rachel is excelling in her trade and it was great to have her on board to speak to high school students about her training experience,” Mr Arthurson said.

THE bulk of executive committee positions have been filled for this year’s Weipa Fishing Classic but there are two major issues pending in 2021. “We need to pick a date and we need more volunteers to join the committee,” re-elected president Aaron Schleich said. “All the big jobs have been filled, we have a president, secretary and treasurer, but we need more people to lend a hand to make sure the event goes smoothly and it’s not left to just a handful of people.” A date for this year’s Weipa Fishing Classic will be set in the next fortnight, but it won’t be on the June long weekend. “We just think that it’s too short of a turnaround to get an event of that size going in a few months,” Mr Schleich said. “However the committee is going to make a few phone calls with other events and lock in a date within the next two weeks so that people can plan ahead.” Last year’s event was held on October 31 and November 1 as a result of the pandemic. “I think we want to get back to being in June, however the turnaround from November to June this year wasn’t enough time for us to be prepared.”

Big weekend ahead for NEWS IN BRIEF women of Western Cape May family fundraiser
A DAY of wellness for women will kick-off two days of events in Weipa dedicated to International Women’s Day. This Saturday, a number of activities will be held as part of the Cape Women’s Wellness Weekend. On Sunday, a sold-out lunch will be held at the Albatross Bay Resort. Kym-Maree Prentice, one of the organisers of the weekend, said it was a great way for local women to enjoy themselves and enjoy a social weekend.

SPECIAL FEATURE “This is a great excuse to get out of the house, catch up with friends – or make new ones – and celebrate life a little bit,” she said.
The wellness kicks off early on Saturday with parkrun at 7am but then changes pace after that. Yoga will start from 9am, while at the same time other ac-
tivities begin, including pottery, floristry and painting. There will also be special markets at the Weipa Storm Surge Shelter in Rocky Point. “Weipa Community Care will be open from 9am til 1pm for food and drinks and we encourage women to support the weekend as much as they can,” Ms Prentice said. “We don’t get a lot of this type of stuff in Weipa so its best to make the most of it and ensure that it continues to grow each year.”
THE Carpentaria Golf Club is expected to be packed inside and outside on Saturday evening for a special fundraiser. The Weipa community has rallied behind Ross and Tonia May and their children. Ross was at work in Weipa before collapsing and is now fighting for his life in the Townsville Hospital. The May family has been a major supporter of the Weipa community for decades and the town is now giving back to the family which has given so much. More event details are on Page 11.
Anzac Day given OK ANZAC Day commemorations in Cape York will proceed as normal in 2021. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced last week that dawn services, marches and other commemorations could go ahead as planned. “Every single Queenslander responded to the call to stop the spread of the virus,” the Premier said. “That has allowed us to ease our restrictions further and faster throughout the pandemic. “It means we can gather in our streets and at cenotaphs to mark the sacrifices of previous generations, serving men and women and their families. “This freedom should be commemorated and never forgotten.”

Survivor hopes to inspire with her story DOMESTIC violence survivor Lydia Gah will share her story with the women of Weipa on Sunday in what will be a through-provoking luncheon. Ms Gah last year published a book titled Survive and Thrive, which documents her life and the violence she suffered at the hands of her former husband while living in PNG.
Following her divorce after a 12-year marriage, Ms Gah pursued her education and went on to become a counsellor and social worker. She also established a charity that supports domestic violence victims in PNG after she emigrated to Australia in 2004. But she has since turned to writing in the hope her words
will both inspire other women to take action and inform a larger, much-needed conversation. “I want to be the voice of the voiceless – the women who, for far too long, have kept quiet about their own ordeal,” she said. “This is my greatest hope that Papua New Guinean women, Melanesian women, Australian
women start the conversation about domestic violence. “It’s not something we should keep quiet about, because the more we keep quiet about it, the more it will happen.” Tickets quickly sold out for the International Women’s Day luncheon at the Albatross Bay Resort, with seats capped at 100 due to COVID restrictions.
REMOTE Cape York cattle station owners and managers are being urged to sign up for a free telecommunications trial that could improve their phone and internet. Optus, Pivotel and Telstra have been awarded grants under the final tranche of the federal government’s $2 million Alternative Voice Services Trials program. Telstra is offering up to 300 trial services, in a range of diverse locations across Australia. More information is available on the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications website.
Far North cyclone watch A CYCLONE watch has been declared for the Far North coast between Cape Flattery and Lucinda as a low pressure system off the coast continues to develop. The latest update from the Bureau of Meteorology on Sunday said the system is about 270km east of Cairns and is expected to be upgraded to a cyclone on Tuesday morning.

Cape set for an influx of new rangers FIFTY new Indigenous Land and Sea Rangers will be employed this year to help protect Queensland’s natural and cultural landscapes. The state government is providing the first instalment for a total of 100 new Indigenous ranger jobs, to be funded over the next three years, which will double the number of Land and Sea Rangers in the program to 200. Environment Minister Meaghan Scanlon said the $24 million funding boost for the Indigenous Land and Sea Ranger Program would provide opportunity for First Nation organisations to manage their country and facilitate the exchange of knowledge and expertise with other land managers. “We’re doubling the number of Indigenous Land and Sea rangers, to build on the fabulous job of caring for country that 100 rangers are already doing in 24 regional communities across Queensland,” Ms Scanlon said. “By increasing Indigenous ranger numbers to 200 over the next three years, we’re delivering jobs and supporting the critical role of First Nations people in co-
stewarding Queensland’s environment and cultural heritage.” Through the Queensland Indigenous Land and Sea Ranger Program, First Nations organisations are provided with grants and support to establish ranger teams. Ms Scanlon said the program delivered multiple benefits for First Nations communities and for the conservation of some of Queensland’s most valuable landscapes. “The Indigenous land and sea rangers contribute to the protection of Queensland’s ecosystems and cultural heritage,” she said. “The program also provides jobs and promotes economic opportunities associated with land and sea management. “Ranger teams carry out habitat restoration, feral animal and weed control, fire management and drive community engagement such as Junior Ranger programs.” Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Councils and Corporations, and incorporated organisations working with Traditional Owners can apply for funding to employ new rangers.

Expo to boost Cape York tourism A FREE music festival will form part of the 10-day Cooktown & Cape York Expo 2021 in June. The Expo will kick off with the free Reconciliation Rocks music festival from June 11-13 featuring Busby Marou, Troy Cassar-Daley and Mau Power, followed by a week-long regional showcase and business expo and finishing with the popular Discovery Festival weekend on June 18-20. Cook Shire mayor Peter Scott said more than 10,000 people were expected to attend the 10 days of festivities with a tent city and RV ground to cater for extra visitors wanting to experience the rich culture of historical Cooktown. “Cooktown & Cape York Expo 2021 will be a celebration of reconciliation and a catalyst for economic renewal, injecting $2.6 million into the region’s economy and highlighting Cape York’s unique history, culture and business opportunities,” he said. “The global pandemic forced Cook Shire Council to defer last year’s celebration of the 250th anniversary of James Cook arriving on the banks of the Endeavour River, but we will proudly continue with its theme of reconciliation in the Year of Indigenous Tourism. “Both Cook and Joseph Banks recorded the first act of reconciliation between Europeans and Australia’s First Nations people in their journals after interacting with the Guugu Yimithirr people during

their seven weeks in Waymburr, now known as Cooktown. “The Expo’s Rising Tide tagline pays homage to local Indigenous culture; the rising tide bringing new life and offering the best time to hunt and gather. “The rising tide also reflects the need for the community to rise up and prosper in a post-pandemic world and links to Cook, as it was the tide that helped float his ship from the reef as he made his way to Waalumbaal Birri (the Endeavour River) 251 years ago.”
Member for Cook Cynthia Lui welcomed the opportunity for Queenslanders, and interstate guests, to experience First Nations arts and culture in a unique and historic setting. “This multi-day event will not only platform local artists and amplify Guugu Yimithirr stories, it will inspire curious visitors in their thousands to make the trek up the Queensland coast,” she said. “As we unite and recover from COVID-19, I would like to congratulate the organisers on their
commitment to delivering this important celebration of reconciliation and unity in the Year of Indigenous Tourism. “The Cooktown & Cape York Expo 2021 will amplify the message of reconciliation, while being a major lure for visitors in the Year of Indigenous Tourism. “I know all guests can expect an enlightened and enriching stay in the Cape this June.” Cooktown & Cape York Expo 2021 is 10 days of free events including Ngutha Ngutha, a show-
case of the local Indigenous communities; Warrma, the Endeavour River creation story told with traditional dance and modern visual effects; the Sails of Light Lantern Parade; a children’s fun fair; and the beloved annual re-enactment of Cook’s landing. Ross May, long term Weipa resident, has suffered ruptured aneurysm to the brain. He is currently in Townsville ICU supported by his wife Tonia, daughter Larissa and family, and their son Chris. The family have made immeasurable contributions to our Weipa Community and now it is time to show our support.
A Fundraiser will be held on Saturday, March 6 at the Carpentaria Golf Club commencing at 5pm
Cruise ship arrival big news for Weipa WEIPA will roll out the red carpet for passengers on a cruise ship that is expected to dock in October. The 100-odd passengers aboard Caledonian Sky will get the VIP treatment, says Weipa Town Authority chair Michael Rowland. “We don’t get a lot of cruise ships to Weipa and I think the domestic cruises in Australia are going to take off,” he said.
“In the past, I don’t think the town has been well prepared for the arrivals and this time we want to make sure the guests are shown the best of what Weipa has to offer.” Mr Rowland said WTA elected member Jaime Gane would be tasked with making sure Weipa and Napranum businesses were ready for the arrival, expected to be on October 7.
“With COVID impacting international travel plans, I think we are going to see a lot more domestic tourism and if we can get a few of these cruise ships every year, it would be great for our local businesses,” Mr Rowland said on Friday. “The important thing is to show them a good time and offer a variety of things to see and do in the short time they are on the ground.”

Doctor has a passion for the Cape WEIPA doctor Steve Johnston is a long way from his home in country Victoria, but his passion for rural and remote medicine means he’s unlikely to be leaving us any time soon. The James Cook University graduate is a GP registrar and rural generalist out of Weipa and boasts skills in anaesthetics, as well as ear, nose and throat medicine. Dr Johnston first arrived in the Cape in his sixth year of medical school. “I absolutely loved the hospital up there. I was with a couple of mates. Every weekend we would take the boat out and go up the Cape. You get such a great balance of work and play and are supported by the docs very well,” he said. “The range of medicine you get is just unreal. You go from anaesthetics to emergency, and then to a lot of outpatient stuff. You go up to Napranum and Mapoon, which are some of the outreach clinics in the communities.” It wasn’t just the location that made a lasting impact. The scope of work available for rural generalists in the remote region also hit home. “I loved my placements in Mount Isa and Boulia, but no other place that I’d worked had allowed me to do that much medicine,” Dr Johnston said. “The whole generalist thing just appealed to me from the get-go. When I came up to Weipa and met

the team it was awesome. I loved it. I was pretty much heart set on it from there, and Weipa was my number one goal.” With his long term plan to return to the Far North, Dr Johnston opted to explore more of the state during his intern and early training years, heading to Toowoomba and rural Stanthorpe in south-east Queensland. While waiting to take up his anaesthetics advanced skills training in Townsville, he went back to Weipa. It was then he became acutely aware of the impact ear disease was having on communities across the Cape. “I got distracted by ear problems in the community, and as I do I get distracted by little things that
then grow into big parts of what I do,” he said. “Ear disease had already been identified as an issue through the Cape but there was no continuity of ENT services in the region. “A couple of my supervisors and close mentors mentioned the ear, nose and throat (ENT) Special Interest training post in Logan under Associate Professor Bernard Whitfield and from there it really just grew.” Dr Johnston admits he didn’t know much about the field of ENT at the time, but he did know there was a huge problem, and while Thursday Island and the eastern Cape were well serviced, the western Cape was lagging behind. “Serious cases were sent to Cairns but many people simply
didn’t go. Then they would turn up here again with pus coming out of their eyes,” Dr Johnston said. “We needed sustainable, and community led care with a consistent ENT presence. “So much of ENT medicine is about preventative care, but that needs relationships and trust between yourself and the communities. To build that you need people on the ground, and a consistent service in the community. “It also needs educating and upskilling, which is easily said, but hard to do when you have to cover such a broad area. “We felt a generalist focus would be the best way to try and cover this, so I went south to Bernie, who turned out to be one of the greatest people.”
While building his skills, Dr Johnston and Associate Prof Whitfield also hatched a plan to bring desperately needed ENT skills to Weipa’s surgical lists and conduct outreach clinics across Cape York. “Bernie was gracious enough to let me fly up to Weipa and start doing outreach clinics all throughout the Cape. “Then I would come back and have a case discussion with Bernie, and we’d have a good discussion with the clinical nurses up here and the audiologist. “We would then go back to the community and come up with plans about who needed surgery and develop surgical lists for Weipa and Cooktown,” he said. “It was crazy. About 60 percent of the kids we saw around the Cape had functional hearing loss. “One in three to one in two children had a hole in at least one of their ears. It was ridiculous. “We put our cards on the table, and with Professor Whitfield’s support and the backing of the doctors of the Cairns and the Weipa Integrated Health Service we were able to develop and put forward a functional and sustainable ENT service for the Cape region.” Eighteen months on, and having completed his anaesthetics training and managing around COVID-19 restrictions, Dr Johnston is back in his beloved Weipa, getting clinics up and running again, with hundreds already waiting to be seen.

The junior shoot at the Weipa SSAA Branch on Saturday showcased some young talent at the club.
Future bright at shooting range THERE’S no shortage of talent among the group of junior shooters at the Weipa SSAA branch. The local club held a junior shoot on Saturday morning at the Weipa complex. “We had an excellent turn out,” club secretary Travis Gordon said. “The youngsters did really well on their shooting, some even outshot the coaches!” The shoot allowed the juniors to try their hand at both the rifle range and pistol targets. Mr Gordon praised the parents for taking their kids along, including those who had a go for the first time. “We have club guns that new people can
try out, so if you are interested, please get involved because we are always after new members,” he said. If you want to get involved with Weipa SSAA Branch, find the club on Facebook. SPORT IN BRIEF Pete wins Wackers A NARROW victory but a victory nonetheless had Pete Ross smiling on Wednesday after he beat a field of 12 at the Carpentaria Golf Club. Ross had 40 off the stick for a nett 34.5 and beat Jim Lucas, who had 55 gross and a nett 35. Grant Crossley was nearest the pin on the 7th, while Fish Philliskirk was closest on the 9th. Crossley was the Bradman’s winner after copping a handicap penalty for a recent victory at Wednesday Wackers.
Ross Craven chips onto the green.
Raiders runners-up WEIPA Raiders were unable to defend their crown in the Northern Australian Beach Rugby Championships at Townsville on Saturday. The Karl Adams-led side made the grand final, but were beaten 7-5 in the decider, played on the sand at The Strand. The highlight of the day was an exhibition match featuring Johnathan Thurston and former Australian star Lote Tuqiri.
Cowboys down Broncos NORTH Queensland coach Todd Payten insisted Scott Drinkwater and Valentine Holmes remained locked in the battle for the No.1 jersey despite a tale-of-two-halves trial win over Brisbane that put this new Cowboys outfit on the path to a muchimproved 2021 season. The Cowboys produced a stunning come-from-behind 34-18 win over Brisbane at Redcliffe on Saturday night, as Holmes scored in the five-try second-half demolition when shifted to fullback. The Cowboys trailed 18-6 after a sluggish first half but piled on three tries in just nine minutes early in the second stanza to take control of the match as Kevin Walters’ new regime at the Broncos produced the same lapses of concentration that plagued their 2020 wooden spoon campaign.
Peter Linehan tees off on the18th.
Pete Ross attempts to make par on the 9th.
Jamie Hutton eyes a final hole birdie.
Meulman takes out first monthly medal of 2021 By MATT NICHOLLS
Kris Brooks looks for an up-and-down par.
Kerry Scales looks to drain a tricky downhill putt.
Veteran Viv wins Dawnies THE mainstay of Dawnbusters golf was rewarded with a well deserved win on Sunday morning. Viv Dick won on a countback from Jim Lucas, who had to settle for his second runner-up prize in a week. Fish Philskirk had the longest drive and Hoffman’s went to Dylan Wonfor.
Murray Mountjoy tries to save par on the 9th.
Steve Jensen admires another long drive.
STEVE Meulman has started the 2021 golfing calendar in fine style, picking up the first A-grade monthly medal of the year on Saturday. In tough conditions, Meulman carded a nett 73 to beat course superintendent Steve Jensen for the main prize. The B-grade monthly medal was taken out by Robert McVean, with a nett 76, while C-grade went to Terry Oberleuter with a nett 79. Competition golf will largely be played on Saturdays in 2021, although there is no play this Saturday due to the fundraiser for the May family. The Carpentaria Golf Club is offering discount full memberships for those wanting to join up for the rest of the financial year. It includes unlimited social golf, ability to get a handicap and play in competitions, as well as discounts at the bar. See the bar staff for more information.
