Work begins on $8.8 million renovation at Weipa

EXPECTING mothers from Weipa and the Western Cape will be able to give birth locally this time next year as work begins on the upgrade of Weipa Hospital.

Around $8.86 million worth of upgrades are under way, or about to start, at the Weipa Hospital and scheduled for completion in the coming months. The work includes a refurbishment of the medical imaging de-

partment to house Weipa’s first CT scanner, the creation of a new primary healthcare clinic and the establishment of the long-awaited birthing centre. The work on the new CT scanner space is expected to be com-

pleted and the scanner operational by late March, subject to the arrival of the scanner from interstate. Work on the primary healthcare clinic is scheduled for completion later this month and operational by early April.

A government spokeswoman confirmed that Weipa’s muchanticipated new birthing suite was expected to be completed in early 2022 with the first local births occurring soon after. Continued – Page 2

Weipa hospital ready for a major transformation From – Page 1 The new birthing unit will be located adjacent to an existing ward, as well as the hospital operating theatre. “The coming months will mark many milestones for Weipa HIS,” the spokeswoman said. “Apart from the work preparing the ground for the new CT scanner, primary healthcare clinic and birthing suite, we will also be upgrading the hospital air-conditioning and chiller systems, as well as relocating and upgrading the hospital pharmacy and the renal dialysis unit. “The pharmacy work will be completed by late February and the new renal dialysis unit in March. “All these works represent a major investment in Weipa hospital and the Weipa community. Once complete they will deliver a significant upgrade in clinical capacity at the hospital.’’ The CT scanner project, which was announced last year, has been funded by a $1.15 million partnership between Rio

Tinto and Old Mapoon Aboriginal Corporation, together with a $1.35 million contribution from the state government. “The new CT scanner means between 40 and 50 patients a month from Weipa and the wider Western Cape region will no longer need to travel out of the region for clinical investigation,’’ the spokeswoman said. “With the scanner on site, Weipa doctors and visiting specialists can perform more services here in Weipa. “This will allow the continued delivery of high-quality health care within the Western Cape region and faster access to potentially lifesaving scans for cancer, stroke and other medical conditions.’’ Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service chief executive Beverley Hamerton said she wanted to thank Rio Tinto and the Old Mapoon Aboriginal Corporation for their strong and ongoing support of the Weipa CT scanner project. “Both Rio Tinto and OMAC

CAPE York’s tourist operators have been dealt an early blow to 2021 as hopes of a bumper Easter will likely be hampered by road conditions. Musgrave Roadhouse owner John McDowall called for TMR to start repairing and grading the Peninsula Developmental Road as soon as possible after the wet season. “We’ve got a lot of people wanting to do the Cape this year

and we thought we might be busier than usual over Easter,” he said. However, a TMR spokesman told Cape York Weekly it was unlikely that post-wet season work would start before Easter. “Grading and repair works start about May each year. Timing depends on the duration and severity of the wet season,” he said last week. “We understand the importance of providing safe, reliable access to Cape York communi-

ties and have been doing so for decades. We aim to re-open the PDR as soon as possible after the annual wet season.” Cape York tourism operators are bracing for the busiest season in years following the closure of international borders and a surge in domestic tourism. However, the condition of the PDR is critical to their business. Repairs on the Cape York road network should be able to start by mid-March. The good news is that TMR

says more grading will likely happen throughout the year. “In the interest of safety, we would increase the frequency of grading and maintenance activities if there were increased traffic volumes,” the spokesman said. Another 18km of bitumen will be laid this year, including:  4.9km between Kennedy and Rocky Creek.  10.1km between Merluna and York Downs.  3km from Musgrave to Red Blanket.

More big rain covers parts of the Cape CAPE York is once again in flood after heavy rain smashed parts of the Peninsula last week. River levels were starting to drop and puddles had begun to dry out before a trough hit the Cape, bringing drenching rain. Key crossings at the Archer River, Laura, Wenlock and Pascoe were impassible on Sunday. Some big rainfall totals were recorded on Saturday – 222mm was captured at Cape Flattery.

Kowanyama tipped 115mm out of the rain gauge to make it 400mm for the month, while 83mm was recorded at Palmerville Station on Saturday. Coen, Picanninny Plains and Merluna Station in the central Cape also recorded big falls last week. No Facebook, no worries NEWS IN BRIEF for your local newspaper Upgrade at Rocky Point

THE decision by Facebook to ban Australian news from the social media platform should be of concern to all citizens, not just those in the media industry. However, the impact will be minimal on your only local newspaper, Cape York Weekly. We’ll still produce a paper each week, print it and distribute it around one of the most remote regions in Australia. The newspaper will still be

available to read for free online and our massive email distribution list will still get it in their inbox every Sunday night. But that’s not the point. When reputable news is taken off a platform, yet conspiracy theorists spouting fake news are allowed to remain, it says a lot about the moral fibre of the global company. It also reminds us that Facebook doesn’t care about local communities or the people that live in them.

What it cares about is your personal data, which it harvests in unimaginable quantities. Understandably, traffic to Australian news websites tumbled in the hours following Facebook’s news ban. In Australia, 15 per cent of traffic to news websites comes from the social media giant. While the Facebook ban might not have a major impact on this publication, it will have a major impact on others around the country.

As much as Murdoch media is a stain on journalism, we still live in a world that values free speech and the right to express political views. Facebook might be right in that it shouldn’t have to pay for publishing news of other outlets but its decision to cut all news organisations from its platform was simply undemocratic and potentially dangerous. Cape York Weekly urges the Australian government to sort out this mess with Facebook.

RIO Tinto has successfully upgraded the power network in Rocky Point after a planned outage on Saturday. The works were required to replace a faulty HV switch and conduct transformer maintenance. It is expected to improve the reliability of the network and allow Rio Tinto Weipa to complete future shutdown works without affecting as many customers. The outage was scheduled over the weekend to minimise the impact on local organisations including the schools. Sunday’s planned outage was cancelled as the work was able to completed in the six-hour period on Saturday.

Name change for Vyse’s A NEW sign has been ordered for Vyse’s Crossing after it was pointed out that the popular swimming hole had been misnamed. Last week, Cape York Weekly reported that it was named after Tom Vyse and that it should not be named Vyce’s Crossing. On Friday, we received a call to say that new signage was being ordered. That’s A-grade efficiency.

Supported by the Western Cape Communities Trust, local students are able to drop into the PCYC before school and get breakfast and a packed lunch. “We can get 90 kids here in a morning and they all end up on the school bus,” Sergeant Baker said. “It’s nothing fancy, just some baked beans or vegemite on toast, but it’s food in their stomach. “We have sandwiches, fruit and a snack for them to take to school if they need it as well.” PCYC Napranum continues to go from strength to strength and will soon launch its Braking the Cycle program to help teenage drivers in the community. “We’re seeing really positive results,” Sergeant Baker said.

LEADERSHIP is crucial to any business and Colin Savo is proving to be a key member of Rio Tinto Weipa’s team. Colin first caught the attention of Rio Tinto in 2017 when he joined the Rio Tinto and Sodexopartnered Fit for Work program as a mentor. His success in motivating and influencing new starters under the program, particularly local Aboriginal trainee applicants, was producing great results. Rio Tinto Weipa Indigenous Employment and Liaison coordinator Kathy Pablo said: “During his time as a mentor, Colin provided encouragement to participants to stick the program out, inspiring them to push on when things got tough and sharing his knowledge and experience to encourage them to reach their goals. “Some of our locals enter the program and feel like they can’t do this or can’t see what’s at the end; but, every day, Colin kept coming to work, doing what was expected of him and rallying the younger ones to keep them motivated. “He’s great at explaining why Rio Tinto operates the way it does and he brings in what he’s learned along the way so it makes sense.” It wasn’t long before Colin was tapped on the shoulder to take part in Rio Tinto’s own work readiness program, Kinnection, which aims to help local Indigenous people develop the skills and knowledge to take on full time roles in the business. Starting as a participant in the program in 2018, Colin had the opportunity to learn many skills working with the Land and Rehab team. During the program, he was involved in activities such as boundary burns, dozer clearing works, tree planting, gamba grass spraying, weed spraying and boundary chainsawing works.

Colin Savo is now a permanent member of the Rio Tinto Weipa team and thanked Kathy Pablo for her support.

Colin also helped clear vital tracks throughout the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve. He said he got along well with the land and rehabilitation crews and thoroughly enjoyed working with the people in the team. “Coming into the program, I was looking forward to working with the land and rehab team and doing something different,” Colin said. “I have developed some good relationships with the crew over the last three years and have ex-

perienced a lot of things I hadn’t done before. I was really satisfied with the work I was doing.” After completing the Kinnection program in January, Colin is now a permanent member of the Land and Sea team. Based in Napranum, Colin will commute to Amrun on a rostered basis and continue his work with land and sea management, including taking part in the vital turtle monitoring and survey works at Amrun. When asked how he felt about

completing the program, Colin said: “I’m pretty excited that I’ve achieved something that I set out to do.” He thanked Kathy Pablo and Rio Tinto Weipa’s Indigenous Employment and Development officer Tonia May for helping him out when he was looking for something more fulfilling to do. Colin’s advice to anyone who is looking to get into a role with Rio Tinto Weipa is to, “give it your best shot and aim for the position you want to achieve”.

No vaccines for Cape in first rollout CAPE York is unlikely to see any vaccines for COVID until late March as the first jabs are rolled out in Queensland this week. Residents in Cairns will be among the first in Australia to receive a vaccination. As part of the federal government’s vaccination program, people in priority groups who are most at risk and who need protection the most – will receive a vaccine first. Cairns Hospital will go live this week as one of three Queensland Pfizer vaccination hubs, and one of 16 across the nation. Frontline healthcare workers and quarantine and border workers will receive the vaccine through the dedicated Pfizer hubs run by states and territories. In addition, a Commonwealth led vaccination workforce will ensure residential aged care and disability care residents and staff receive their vaccines. Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch said the staged approach to the rollout would ensure those who need the most protection get it first.

“Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the Australian government has worked diligently to ensure our nation has access to safe and effective vaccines,” Mr Entsch said. “From next week, some of our most essential workers and vulnerable Australians in Cairns and Far North Queensland will be vaccinated, with more of our community to follow in the coming weeks and months.” A spokesperson for Queensland Health said people living in Queensland’s rural and remote regions would be offered the COVID-19 vaccine at the earliest possible opportunity. “Established services will be utilised to the extent possible to deliver COVID-19 vaccinations,” they said. “This will see not only more hospitals come on board as vaccination hubs across the state, but the utilisation of pharmacies, GPs and community health centres to deliver the vaccine as safely and quickly as possible. “Other service delivery models will also be considered.”

Nurse navigators prove crucial for remote patients in region TRAVELLING away from home, family and friends for specialist healthcare in a strange town can add to the anxieties already felt by patients facing multiple chronic illnesses and hospitalisations. But support is readily to hand through the Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service’s Nurse Navigator program. The health service’s 12 nurse navigators, two Indigenous support officers and an administration officer provide a single point of contact and support for some of the region’s most vulnerable and complex patients.

The team works right across the region from bases in Cairns, Weipa, Cooktown, Bamaga and Thursday Island. Unit manager Rachel Sargeant said the nurse navigator roles were taken by experienced nurses with expert clinical knowledge and deep understanding of the health system and how it operated. They work with patients who have chronic and complex care needs, helping them to navigate to and from their referring general practitioner and/or other primary healthcare provider, as well as to major hospitals outside the region.

Ms Sargeant said the nurse navigator program had about 250 active clients on its books. “Our job is to smooth a patient’s journey right through the health system,” she said. “In isolated areas like ours, patients and clients often face challenges in knowing which service or provider to call for assistance or have concerns about travelling long distances for treatment or keeping up with appointments. “These are barriers that often frustrate patients struggling with multiple illnesses and hospitalisation.”

DISASTER assistance is now available for nine local government areas in Cape York and the Torres Strait impacted by flooding brought on by a Tropical Low in January. Aurukun, Cook, Lockhart River, Mapoon, Napranum, Northern Peninsula Area and Pormpuraaw councils, along with Torres Shire and Torres Strait Island Regional Council are eligible for financial assistance under the jointly funded CommonwealthState Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements. Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch said the role these councils play in the recovery is essential and they are the engine that drives the ongoing clean-up and repairs to infrastructure. “None of us will soon forget the heavy rain and flooding that lashed the region bringing down trees, damaging local roads and bridges, and sending a flood of debris,” Mr Entsch said. “The repairs will help the community work through the disaster and once again start to enjoy the best of Cape York and the Torres Strait. “The Australian government will continue to work alongside the Queensland government and local communities to ensure that they have all the support they need during this difficult time.” Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Minister Mark Ryan said the severe weather system had seen rivers burst their banks across Cape York and cause damage in the Far North. “Cape York communities breathed a sigh of relief when the Low failed to form into a Tropical Cyclone, but the weather system dumped a significant amount of rain over the last week of January into already swollen catchments,” he said. “The flooding associated with this Tropical Low has damaged essential public assets, such as roads and bridges, and isolated many communities who have only just seen the waters go down after Tropical Cyclone Imogen. “This funding will help these local government areas alleviate the cost of counter disaster operations such as sand-bagging, tree clearing and repairing damage to the local road network. EMILY Hutchinson has been remembered as “a loving partner, a caring and wonderful daughter, a loving sister and a forever best friend” as hundreds celebrated and mourned her life last Monday. The Sunshine Coast funeral was streamed across the world to reach those who had been a part of the school teacher’s life. At Weipa, the Carpentaria Golf Club was packed with staff from Western Cape College, as well as members of the Weipa community who wanted to farewell their much-loved friend.

Threatened species put in spotlight By ROBYN MAY Cape York NRM

THE 2021 North Queensland Threatened Species Symposium, held last week in Cairns, was a sell-out success with more than 150 people attending including: the Threatened Species Commissioner, Dr Sally Box, all levels of government, the community, NGOs, Traditional Owners, Indigenous Rangers, Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, research organisations, recovery teams, universities and the National Environmental Science Program (NESP) Threatened Species Hub. The objective of the symposium was to increase knowledge exchange and collaboration between organisations and individuals working to conserve threatened species and ecological communities in Northern Queensland. With 188 threatened species and four threatened ecological communities across the North Queensland NRM Alliance re-

gions, this represents a major challenge. North Queensland NRM Alliance chair Emma Jackson, said that many of the region’s threatened plant and animal species are endemic to north Queensland. “This is not just about wanting to save our favourite animals,’’ she said following the symposium. “Biodiversity is also the basic foundation for life – it’s what makes the earth habitable. “Each individual species has a role to play in the ecosystems that we depend on for clean air, food and water.” A primary result from the two-day event was the importance of including Indigenous Traditional Owners right from the start of endangered species rehabilitation projects. The North Queensland Threatened Species Symposium was supported through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program and National Environmental Science Program.

Technology helping our turtles SCIENTISTS and Indigenous rangers are harnessing the power of artificial intelligence to help protect endangered sea turtle nesting sites in Cape York. As recently as 2015, feral pigs were wiping out entire generations of turtles on kilometres of beaches south of Aurukun. “They can smell the eggs, they dig up the nests and they eat the eggs,” James Cook University turtle researcher Jennie Gilbert said. “You’re losing all these eggs out of the nest and even if they don’t eat the whole lot of the eggs the other ones are not viable anyway.” For the past six years, CSIRO scientists and Indigenous rangers have teamed up to monitor turtle nesting sites and manage feral pig populations in the area. Their work has reduced nest predation to as low as 30 per cent,

but monitoring is time-consuming and tedious. CSIRO scientist Justin Perry said each field trip yielded tens of thousands of helicopter and drone images that needed a mammoth effort to analyse. “When we did this manually, it took three interns six weeks to process those photos,” Dr Perry said. “It’s a huge resource drain.” Now, with the help of artificial intelligence developed by Microsoft, the process is speeding up. “We automate that entire process and the computer does it for us in two hours, so it’s a pretty remarkable change,” Dr Perry said. Lee Hickin, chief technology officer for Microsoft Australia, said the AI platform could analyse thousands of images. “It’s able to understand is it land, is it water and then more

specifically, is it turtle tracks, is it pig tracks, is it a turtle nest,” Mr Hickin said. “As we teach it and show it more and more images it gets better at identifying it. “We’re giving it as much information as possible so it understands as much about the situation as possible so that it can learn different ways of understanding what it’s seeing in any given image.” For scientists like Dr Perry and the Indigenous rangers who protect turtle nests and manage pig numbers, it means less time looking and more time working. “The reason the rangers are out there is to protect the turtles so if you spend all of your time monitoring and not so much time managing you actually start missing out on the reason why you’re there,” Dr Perry said.

The 2020 Weipa Fishing Classic committee is looking for more support at this week’s AGM.

New date is likely for fishing classic THE Weipa Fishing Classic will likely be again moved from its usual June weekend this year as the committee attempts to make up for lost time in 2021. Last year’s event was moved from June to late October as a result of COVID and the short turnaround to June this year might be too much for the committee, president Aaron Schleich said. “That will be up to the new committee to determine but the feeling among the current executive is that it might be a stretch to get it organised by June,” he said. The Weipa Fishing Classic AGM will be held this Tuesday from 7pm at 20 Embley Street in Circular Way.

“All positions will be declared vacant and we’ll then elect a new committee and executive,” Mr Schleich said on Sunday. “Hopefully we get a few people turn up wanting to be involved in organising this year’s event.” The current executive is likely to volunteer again but others are more than welcome to put their hand up or join the general committee. “I’m happy to just be part of the team if someone else wants to have a go at leading it,” Mr Schleich said. “It’s a great event to be a part of. It’s the biggest event in Weipa.” Details of the AGM are on Page 2.

Gabe steps up to run Arts Centre AURUKUN resident Gabe Waterman has been appointed Manager of the Wik and Kugu Arts Centre. Welcoming Mr Waterman to the role, Aurukun mayor Keri Tamwoy said she was looking forward to seeing Aurukun’s artists create new carvings and paintings for a series of upcoming exhibitions. “After the disruption caused by the pandemic last year, our artists are back at work crafting the unique wooden carvings, paintings and assembled pieces that have earned the attention of the art world,” Cr Tamwoy said. “The Wik and Kugu camp dog carvings called ku’ are a favourite, but buyers are also very interested in the exquisite carved birds and feather flowers that are part of Aurukun’s culture. “Mr Waterman’s experience with the Woyan-min Biocultural project will bring a new focus to the community’s art by ensuring there is a strong link to the Wik Mungkan language.” Mr Waterman has been working with the project for the past two years, teaching audiovisual skills to disengaged youth so they can document the culture and language of their Elders. He has a long connection with the community after his father Noel Waterman was adopted by the Pienkinna family in the eighties while working on the outstations. Gabe Waterman visited Au-

at the Cairns Art Gallery in conjunction with the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair, which will include a documentary produced by the Woyan-min Biocultural project. “Aurukun’s Elders are the custodians of the stories behind their art and these oral histories can continue to be passed down by involving the younger generations in the story telling process through modern media such as digital art.”

Trailing 10-8 with just over a minute on the clock Walker opted to take a penalty shot from a

Daley said he “wanted to go for the try” but Walker couldn’t see any message when he looked to the bench and assumed levelling up the scores was the best play believing they’d have extra-time to decide the match. Instead the game ended in

a draw for the first time in the history of the All Stars game and the teams shared the Arthur Beetson Trophy. “I thought it was golden point,” Walker said. Daley said although he wanted his team to go for the win he considered the draw a fair result. “I think when you look at it overall of course we would have

loved to have won but I think you just saw two passionate proud cultures having a crack right ’til the death,” Daley said. “We made it extremely hard for ourselves, we didn’t have any good ball, we turned it over, we were ill-disciplined at times but the commitment to defend and just keep turning up was as good as I’ve seen.”

Oztag revived in Weipa

Dawnies goes to Alwyn ALWYN Van Niekerk shot 43 off the stick to claim honours in Sunday’s Dawn Busters at the Carpentaria Golf Club. He beat Jim Lucas for the prize in a field of 23 golfers. Steve Wust claimed the nearest the pin, while Lucas had the longest drive. Dylan Wonfor had to settle for Hoffman’s. Dawn Busters golf is played every Sunday morning at Weipa. Get there by 6.30am to tee off for nine holes of social golf.

Osaka crowned champ NAOMI Osaka has won her second Australian Open championship in three years following a straight-sets victory over Jennifer Brady in the women’s final at Melbourne Park. The third-seeded Osaka triumphed 6-4, 6-3 on Rod Laver Arena. It was the star’s second-straight major title, following her US Open win last September, and the fourth in her young career. Brady, the tournament’s 22nd seed, was making her debut in the final of a major. The American was the only player in the women’s draw who went through hard quarantine to reach the second week at Melbourne Park.

Machado inspires Snakes POINT guards Scott Machado and Tyler Harvey gave fans a world-class duel to open the NBL Cup with Machado’s Cairns Taipans taking the 101-95 win against the Illawarra Hawks. Machado had 31 points, six assists and eight rebounds as he led his side back from 12 points down midway through the third quarter. Harvey had 24 points, five rebounds and five assists in what was the best possible start in terms of quality to the NBL Cup.
