THERE was no such thing as COVID-19 the last time our so-called Member for Cook Cynthia Lui visited Weipa. It’s been some 530 days since the MP last flew out of Weipa Airport after a whirlwind trip to Weipa and Napranum. That was on August 28, 2019. It’s simply not good enough. Cape York Weekly is calling on her boss, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, to fix this disaster. Between Weipa, Napranum and Mapoon, there are around 6000 people living in this area. They deserve to be represented by their “local” MP. Weipa might be the home of Australia’s biggest bauxite mine, which helped this region largely avoid economic disaster during the height of the pandemic, but that’s not to say that our tourism sector did not suffer. Tour guides, fishing charters, accommodation providers and related businesses copped a hiding as a result of biosecurity bubbles and border closures. Yet not one visit from Cynthia Lui. Not one phone call, either, from all reports. Cape York Weekly is now 20 editions old since launching last September and we have yet to hear a word from the elected Member for Cook. A reminder that we had an election in October. Did she show up then? No. It’s insulting. Weipa is the second biggest township in Ms Lui’s electorate, behind Mareeba. It’s also one of the biggest economic drivers for the state of Queensland. Yet we have a massive child care problem, major telecommunication problems, a number of infrastructure issues and no long-term future plan. How long will Weipa continue to be ignored by Ms Lui and her government?
Cynthia Lui hasn’t been seen in Weipa, Napranum or Mapoon for 530 days and there’s no visit in sight for those communities. Cape York Weekly raised the issue prior to last year’s election and haven’t receieved a response.
Credit where it’s due, we love that there is major investment happening at the Weipa Hospital through the introduction of a CT scanner and a birthing unit. But if Ms Lui ever visited Weipa Hospital, she would notice an overflowing car park. Where is the car park extension? The nature strip is not an appropriate parking site. Normalisation has been a long topic of discussion and we are now at the point where Rio Tinto is happy to hand over the keys to the town. Yet the state government is playing games and delaying the process because it sees no value in Weipa’s long-term future. Just because bauxite mining has a limited lifespan, doesn’t mean Weipa has to suffer. There are ample opportunities for Weipa to grow post-mining. Tourism would be the first in-

dustry to benefit, especially once the PDR is sealed. The deep water port also opens doors to other industries. Want to reduce shipping traffic from the Great Barrier Reef? Bypass them to Weipa and make the western Cape a major freight hub. Our Member for Cook would know all of this if she ever turned up and listened to locals. Since moving her electorate office from Mareeba to Cairns, the MP has been holding “mobile offices” in Mareeba and Mossman/Port Douglas. What about Weipa? What about Mapoon or Napranum? Lockhart River’s telecommunications were down last week. What about them? Cape York is one of the most isolated places in Australia. We need a full-time MP who is willing to roll up their sleeves
and listen to the community and fight for the constituents. Annastacia Palaszczuk has kept Queenslanders safe and we thank her for that. But she has allowed her government to forget about the remote areas and allowed Cynthia Lui to get away with ignoring the very people who elected her. Sadly, the people of Cape York don’t understand what it’s like to have an MP with their back. Billy Gordon wasn’t up to the job, nor was David Kempton. This isn’t about politics, it’s about caring. Weipa and its surrounding communities need to be cared for and nurtured. The state government can no longer rely on Rio Tinto to do all the heavy lifting in the Western Cape. It’s time for some leadership at state level.
Entsch blasts PDR sealing works after flood damage WARREN Entsch has accused the state government of squandering millions of taxpayer dollars after sections of road in Cape York washed away in flooding. Cape York Weekly last week published pictures of a section of road between Laura and Musgrave that had been washed away in flooding. Mr Entsch said the road should have been built to withstand the heavy rains of the wet season. “It makes me sick in the guts. It’s an absolute
disgrace,” Mr Entsch told ABC Far North. “This is a huge waste of taxpayer’s money. “That road now is worse than what it was before they started to seal it. “I know that TMR will come back with all sorts of excuses about the weather but surely to goodness they have the capacity to be able to work out what is required in these areas. “This area floods regularly and clearly they haven’t taken drainage into consideration or put in
the appropriate culverts. “Even if the water is very high, surely to goodness the standard of construction should have been better than that.” Mr Entsch told the ABC he had lodged a complaint with Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack, whose portfolio “provides 80 per cent of the funds” to seal the PDR. “His office has assured me they will be raising concerns with Queensland’s Roads Minister Mark Bailey,” he said.

Much-loved teacher to be farewelled after tragedy By MATT NICHOLLS
ALWAYS seen with a smile on her face, Emily Hutchinson was a great fit for Weipa. After five years of teaching at Western Cape College, Emily was farewelled at the end of the 2020 school year. She arrived in Cape York from the Sunshine Coast but left as a genuine North Queenslander. With partner Ben Newman, they had found a “perfect place” to live at Julatten, along with a new school at Port Douglas. But she would, of course, be back to visit Weipa. Maybe not as a teacher, but to see friends, go camping and enjoy the Cape York lifestyle she loved so much. Tragically, that wasn’t to be. Mere weeks after starting her new life down south, Emily was taken from her friends and family last Saturday (January 30). She died following injuries as a result of a tragic accident at Stoney Creek falls in Cairns.

Police said boulders dislodged from a rock wall and struck Emily, who was chasing a new swimming hole with Ben. She was airlifted to Cairns Hospital but could not be saved. News of the tragedy sent a shockwave throughout the state. Friends and family could not
believe the news they were being told. Weipa can feel like a quiet place most Sundays, but it was particularly sombre last Sunday. Virtually everyone in town knew her, or had seen her smile at some point. Emily loved a beer, loved to
roll up her sleeves and have a go at something and loved to be the life of any gathering. FUNERAL SERVICE A COHORT of staff from Western Cape College will next Monday (February 15) attend Emily’s funeral on the Sunshine Coast, while others will attend a live streamed service at the Carpentaria Golf Club, starting at 10am. The school intends to operate a modified schedule on Monday morning to accommodate the staff wanting to pay their respects to Emily. A spokesman from the Department of Education said the school communities in Port Douglas and Weipa were “deeply shocked and saddened” at the tragic passing. “She was a highly respected and beloved member of staff who will be greatly missed by all her colleagues and students at Western Cape College and Port Douglas State School, where she had most recently been teaching,” the spokesman said.

DESPITE the best efforts of local wildlife carers and a trained vet in Cairns, Penni the turtle didn’t make it last week. Found on Pennefather Beach near Mapoon, the flatback turtle was entangled in foreign netting. A local woman spotted him, freed him and took him to Weipa Wildlife Carer founder Kristy Philliskirk, who has experience treating injured turtles. “He was very dehydrated and had a damaged back flipper,” Ms Philliskirk said. “This happens every year around this time with the weather and wind pushing all the foreign trash into the Cape and onto our gorgeous beaches.” Ms Philliskirk said Penni did not respond to treatment and was not eating, so she arranged to have him flown to Cairns for surgery on his flipper. “The team at Boongarry Vet Surgery did an amazing job trying their hardest to help Penni but unfortunately they could not save him,” she said. “The vet said that unfortunately nothing could have been done to save him from the time he was rescued. “Sometimes we just don’t get the result we want but as least Penni passed away not in pain and not a horrible death laying upside down on the beach with the possibility of animals eating him.” The volunteer carer said that

locals should look to clean up the beaches whenever they go camping in the Cape and be on the lookout for wildlife. “Please keep an eye out for tangled wildlife and, if safe to do so, cut the animal free and dispose of the trash,” she said. “A massive thank you to Kat and Dave for noticing this little one and taking the time to check on it.” Weipa Wildlife Care is a registered charity and all money received goes towards food and medical equipment for animals that are found in the region. Community warned to be wary of Rocky Point croc THIS Rocky Point croc is just minding his own business, but he’s not afraid of humans and should be treated with caution. Amateur photographer Nathan Billing captured the “friendy” salty on Saturday morning and urged parents
to remind their kids to be careful while fishing off the Rocky Point beach. Residents are urged to download the Qwildlife app developed by the Department of Environment and Science. Lindsay Delzoppo said
those living in croc country could use it whenever they spot a crocodile. “Uploading a crocodile’s location, size, time of day and any photographs of the animal that can be safely taken will help DES wildlife officers,” Mr Delzoppo said.

Swimmers not deterred by croc attack at Vyce’s By MATT NICHOLLS
A CROCODILE attack at one of Weipa’s most popular wet season swimming holes wasn’t enough to deter some people. Just days after Isaac Adidi was grabbed by a saltwater croc at Vyce’s Crossing, swimmers were spotted having a good time just metres from the attack site. Mr Adidi said he considered himself both “lucky and unlucky” to be grabbed by the croc on Sunday, January 31. “I had been swimming there for four days the week before,” he told Cape York Weekly. “So I think I’m unlucky that it was me who got attacked, but lucky to be alive.” Rangers from the Department of Environment and Science flew to Weipa last week to track the croc in an attempt to shoot it. Permission had to be sought from Rio Tinto management, as well as Traditional Owners to euthanise the crocodile, estimat-

ed to be about three metres long. Vyce’s Crossing is located on a non-operational piece of mining land and the Ely Trust are the custodians of the site. Traditional Owners gave permission for the croc to be shot,
however, authorities were unable to find it in the flooded area. When Cape York Weekly visited the site on Wednesday, there was just a small sign near the entrance to Vyce’s Crossing, but the road was not closed.
A ranger from the Department of Environment and Science looks for the croc at Vyce’s Crossing.
Authorities had to scramble to close the site as the rangers set a crocodile trap in a bid to catch the predator. Sources said that rangers were not confident of trapping the crocodile due to the terrain. Mr Adidi said he was thankful that his partner Shawntaye Manantan and cousin were with him when the attack happened. “We literally couldn’t do anything but watch what was happening and it happened so fast,” Ms Manantan said. “We ran and dragged him up (the bank) and the croc was coming with its mouth open.” They drove him to Weipa Hospital for treatment on his gouged hand and back before he was flown to Cairns on Monday morning for surgery. Mr Adidi said he would go swimming again, but “not for a while”.
ZOMBIE-creating killer wasps are under the microscope at Archer Point as the Yuku Baja Muliku Rangers trap Australian spider wasps for venom research as part of a CSIRO project. Ranger coordinator Lyall Naylor said spider wasps were famously known for their bizarre reproductive behaviour, with females paralysing a spider before laying their eggs inside the frozen arachnids, who eventually became living meals for the newly hatched wasps. “Despite the widespread knowledge of this phenomenon, little is known about the biological mechanisms that make it possible,” Mr Naylor said. However, reproductive behaviour is not the only aspect of scientific interest. “The project hopes to not only obtain a better understanding of the wasps that are present in the area, but what role they play in the ecosystem.” The study will identify the wasps and any species that have not been previously recognised by entomological taxonomists will be formally described. Venom will be extracted to identify the toxins and their function, which will improve scientists’ understanding of the interactions between wasps and spiders and the basic biology of each species. Rangers and CSIRO staff have been trapping insects on Yuku Baja land for the past two weeks.

Weipa company cleaning up Strait CARPENTARIA Contracting is making light work of abandonded sunken vessels in the Torres Strait, despite poor weather conditions in the region. Director Vance Wallin said he had to change plans on arrival late last month as a tropical low made conditions tough to work in near Seisia. “So we just moved up to Thursday Island and started with the ones around there and we’ll get back to the others as we progress,” he said. Carpentaria Contracting is removing 13 vessels as part of a $2.7
million contract awarded by the state government to clean up waterways in Queensland. “The visibility is zero. The water is like coffee at the moment,” Mr Wallin said. “Luckily we don’t have to do a lot in the water but it’s still very tricky work.” Once removed from the water, the vessels are barged to Cairns to be scrapped and disposed of safely. “We haven’t found any treasure yet,” Mr Wallin said with a smile. The Weipa-based company has been allocated 60 days to remove the vessels as part of the contract.

New business lands in Napranum A BRISBANE building company is setting up a satellite office in Napranum as it looks to win public housing contracts in Cape York. Cowie Group representatives spent two weeks travelling between Napranum and Mapoon to speak with locals as they look to establish long-term contracts. “We don’t want to just come up here and then leave,” director Phil Cowie said. “We want to build a long-term relationship with the communities, employ locals and train them up so they are capable of running the business here.” Cowie Group general manager Mark Roberts said he expected work to begin after the wet season and was confident of securing projects through the Napranum and Mapoon councils. “It’s pretty exciting to see the potential in these communities,” he said. “There are a lot of opportunities around for people who don’t want to drive a truck in the mines.” Charles Budby from Kuku’nathi Services said he was happy to welcome Cowie Group to the region, provided it meant jobs for locals. “So far everything seems to be really positive and that’s what we need in Napranum,” he said. “We need more than just mining jobs and I hope Cowie Group are here for the long haul.”

Weipa experience invaluable for OT
GAINING experience in a remote community has been a big tick for JCU student Jayrah Adlawan. Ms Adlawan is studying a Bachelor of Occupational Therapy and approached Rio Tinto Weipa for work experience in the Cape. The mining company was able to partner with Queensland Health and get the student a placement at Weipa Hospital. Ms Adlawan said she chose to study her degree be-
cause of the varying avenues and pathways to engage with a variety of clients and allied health professionals. She hopes to pursue a career in mental health and/or paediatrics. In work placement with Weipa’s occupational therapy team, Ms Adlawan had opportunities to travel to other communities and work with a variety of practical students from JCU, who shared their knowledge. “I really enjoyed build-
ing relationships with clients and I’m thankful that Rio Tinto and Queensland Health gave me the opportunity,” she said. Ms Adlawan’s advice for students who might be interested in work experience was that “it’s a valuable and beneficial experience, which will further enable school students to firm up their aspirations and career choices, or explore other roles they may not have previously considered”.

Council considers update to laws to tackle local issues AURUKUN Shire Council has held a special meeting to discuss revising or adding new local laws to tackle community issues. Littering, overgrown lots and yards, as well as stray dogs were among the list of items in need of addressing. Councillors in Aurukun
linked up with staff in the Cairns office over video link to discuss the local laws. Preston Law solicitors Marina Dunstan and Julian Bodenmann provided a presentation on local laws and what the council could add to its existing laws. Councillors and officers
raised possible new areas to be included. Aurukun Shire Council chief executive officer Bernie McCarthy said a summary of draft local laws would be presented to the March council meeting and then circulated for a 30-day public consultation period.
New health packs prove popular A DISCOUNT home care pack for remote Indigenous communities has been developed through a partnership with Community Enterprise Queensland and Apunipima Cape York Health Council. Apunipima population health and program strategy manager Melinda Hammond said the packs, which have been subsidised to just $20 each from its $69 retail price, have already been launched in the Napranum and Kowanyama stores. Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) is a preventable, devastating condition that disproportionately affects Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It is caused by a Group A Streptococcus (Strep A) bacterial infection of the throat and skin, which, without treatment, can result in Acute Rheumatic Fever (ARF), and potentially RHD and permanent damage to the heart. Apunipima collaborated with CEQ on the Home Care Pack, which was developed by Apunipima’s RHD team and consists of essential cleaning products and equipment to help reduce exposure to Strep A bacteria. “Rheumatic heart disease is a serious, disabling, sometimes fatal condition, but also entirely preventable,” Ms Hammond said last week. “It’s everyone’s business to keep a clean home for good health, with untreated Strep A infections possibly leading to ARF and RHD.
Apunipima RHD Team members Emily Turner and Helena De Bortoli in the Napranum CEQ store with the $20 Home Care Packs.
“We recently launched our Home Care Packs at CEQ’s Napranum store, with the packs selling out in less than 24 hours. “We also had similar popularity with our launch at CEQ’s Kowanyama store, and there is already a demand for more packs. “We’d like to thank CEQ for coming on board with this important health initiative, and hope to make the packs available for more Cape communities in 2021.”
The $20 Home Care Pack includes: • Dishwashing detergent • Laundry detergent • Disinfectant • Cleaning cloths and sponges • Dust pan and brush • Broom • Mop • Mop bucket • Fly spray CEQ chief executive officer Ian Copeland said that CEQ had been
supporting remote communities in northern Australia for more than 100 years. “Apunipima delivers outstanding health programs for Cape York communities, and CEQ is proud to collaborate with them on their latest initiative,” he said. “RHD is a devastating disease to suffer, and preventing rheumatic fever in the first instance is crucial to reduce the chances of RHD occurring.
“By making the Home Care Packs available in our stores, we hope it helps local residents keep their homes cleaner, and therefore reduce the chance of exposure to Strep A.” CEQ is a not-for-profit organisation responsible for providing goods and essential services to the Torres Strait, Northern Peninsula Area, and mainland Aboriginal remote communities through its 28 stores.

Rescue a reminder to share your travel plans TWO men avoided a long walk and a potential disaster by simply letting others know where they were headed. Last week, Laura police located two men after a snail searching expedition in the Cape came to a sudden halt. A 60-year-old Redlynch man and a 72-year-old Cranbrook man ventured north of Cairns with the intention of finding a rare Australian snail species. The men left Cairns early Monday morning, February 1, and travelled north to the remote Palmerville station, west of Lakeland. At around 10am that morning, the men’s journey
Proudly hosted by

came to an abrupt end when their vehicle became stuck in thick mud. Without phone reception, the men were unable to call for assistance. Having lived and travelled through remote areas of Australia their entire life, the men were well prepared, having five days worth of food and water on board. The men had notified their family members of their intentions along with GPS coordinates of their destination prior to setting off. After failing to return home the following day, February 2, family members contacted local police and provided the GPS co-ordi-
nates of the mens’ target destination and a missing person investigation commenced. Around 2.30pm on Wednesday, Senior Constable Adam Frew located the two men at a washed out causeway. Covered in mozzie bites with smiles from ear to ear, the men were in safe hands. Senior Constable Frew managed to winch the men’s car out of the bog and had them travelling back home with a story to tell. “Providing family with extensive details of the journey allowed us to locate these men quickly in very difficult terrain,” explained Senior Constable Frew.

gets Veteran back Bowen signs Green keys to the deal to return to Cowboys Maroons
FORMER Cowboys coach Paul Green has been announced as the new coach of the Queensland State of Origin team, on a one-year deal. Green takes the reins from Wayne Bennett who led the Maroons to an upset 2-1 series win over New South Wales in 2020. During his seven seasons as head coach at the Cowboys, Green took his side to its maiden NRLpremiership in 2015 and a grand final in 2017. He stepped away from the club midway through the 2020 season after the team struggled in recent years, failing to make finals. As a former halfback, Green also played seven games for the Maroons from 1999 and 2001. He said he was thrilled to be given the opportunity. “The Maroons family is immersed in history, and I’m both humbled and privileged to be in this position,” Green said. “I think every kid who grows up loving rugby league dreams of one day pulling on the jersey. “While my playing days are well and truly behind me, to get a chance to contribute in a meaningful way as a coach is something that I’m really excited about.” He will start his new role immediately, ahead of this year’s Origin series starting on June 9.
THE North Queensland Cowboys have agreed to a one-year contract with Javid Bowen for the 2021 season. Bowen re-joined the club at the beginning of the pre-season on a training block, but suffered a serious shoulder injury prior to Christmas. The 27-year-old has made impressive strides in his recovery and is expected to miss only the first month of the season. The Hope Vale product previously appeared in 36 games for the Cowboys between 2016 and 2019, scoring 10 tries. “We identified a need to add depth to our outside backs when looking at our last roster spot,” Cowboys head of football Micheal Luck said. “Javid really impressed us in his stint before Christmas and his attitude and professionalism since having surgery proved to us he deserves another chance in the NRL. “Javid knows he will start the year with the Pride, but there is a real opportunity for him to return to the NRL and be a significant contributor to our team in 2021 as he continues to show diligence with his rehab and plays well when he is back on the field.”

SPORT IN BRIEF Cerneka wins ... just! MICK Cerneka beat the rain, a field of 12 and a countback to win Wednesday Wackers last week. Cernaka had 39 off the stick for a nett 33.5 and was level with Scott Trifod after the back 9. But it was the wily veteran who got the nod in the countback and had his Wednesday handicap lowered to 2.5. There was some consolation for Trifod, who had nearest the pin on 15. The same could be said for Grant Crossley, who was closest on 18 but ended up with the Bradman’s.
Clinton crushes it THE rain largely held off on Sunday morning for 16 keen golfers to contest the Dawn Busters. Clinton Wonfor took honours, beating the unlucky Vivian Chan. Jim Hunter had the longest drive, while Dean Pateman took out Hoffman’s.
Barty heads into Open as favourite after tour win By ABC GRANDSTAND
WOMEN’S world number one Ash Barty concluded her Australian Open preparations on a triumphant note following a straight-sets defeat of Garbiñe Muguruza in the Yarra Valley Classic final at Melbourne Park. In front of a sparse crowd, Barty chalked up a 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 win over last year’s Australian Open runner-up on the eve of the season’s first major. It was Barty’s ninth singles
title on the WTA Tour and her second on Australian soil. Barty, an Australian Open semi-finalist just over 12 months ago, will begin this year’s tournament against Danka Kovinić on Tuesday. There was rustiness in Barty’s performances during the Yarra Valley Classic but understandably so. She had not contested a WTA Tour event since last February after deciding to sit out most of the 2020 season because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Importantly for Barty she got four matches under her belt at Melbourne Park to help iron out any wrinkles ahead of the Australian Open, while her physical conditioning was as impressive as ever. Beating an opponent of Muguruza’s quality will provide a confidence boost and although Barty’s serve was inconsistent in the final – despite posting 11 aces – her groundstrokes, and use of drop shots and lobs were executed with precision.
Barty made a positive start when she sent down an ace with the opening serve of the match, but she fell behind on the scoreboard when she was broken by Muguruza in the third game. But Barty, the 2019 French Open champion, was not prepared to roll over. Meanwhile, Russia streaked to a comfortable victory in the ATP Cup final. Men’s world number four Daniil Medvedev beat promising Italian Matteo Berrettini 6-4, 6-2.
Junior soccer returns REGISTRATIONS are now open for the 2021 Weipa Junior Soccer season. There will be two come-and-try sessions on February 20 and February 27 before the first round on Saturday, March 6. The come-and-try days are an opportunity to have a kick and participate in mini games to see if kids want to commit for the season. It’s also your chance to ask questions about the upcoming season. All games are played at the Western Cape College Oval.
Weipa BMX AGM
PARENTS looking to get involved in the Weipa BMX Club are encouraged to attend the annual general meeting later this month. Pop down to the Weipa Bowls Club on Friday, February 19 at 7pm to have a chat with the committee and offer a hand in the 2021 riding season.
Junior footy AGM THE Central Cape Suns Junior Rugby League club is holding its annual general meeting at the Weipa Bowls Club at 7.15pm on Thursday, February 18. Parents are asked to attend to help form a committee for the upcoming season.
Just three swimmers took part in Western Cape College’s trials for the Peninsula swimming squads. Held at the Weipa Aquatic Centre on Thursday afternoon, Malachai Clemens, 17, Jack Daniel-King, 10, and Annabelle Clemens, 14, had to brave blustery and rainy conditions to record qualifying times. The trials are usually held around the school’s swimming carnival but that has been pushed back to Term 3 in 2021.
