Birthing confirmed

WOMEN living in Weipa and the surrounding Cape York communities will be able to give birth closer to home next year, with work under way on a new $25 million birthing unit in Weipa.

The news was revealed by Cape

York Weekly on November 8 but will today be announced by the Queensland government.

Health and Ambulance Services Minister Yvette D’Ath said a lowrisk birthing unit was expected to be operational at Weipa Hospital by the end of 2021.

“This new birthing unit will mean expectant women in these communities will not have to travel to Cairns to have their babies.”

“There will also be increases in the number of operational, administrative and allied health staffing to support the new birthing service,” she said.

“The unit will deliver up to 70 babies a year.”

Defence brings smiles to faces in Cape and Strait THE Air Force and Army have combined forces to spread some Christmas cheer in remote areas of Far North Queensland.

A C-27J Spartan aircraft from No. 35 Squadron and personnel from 51 Far North Queensland Regiment last week deployed on Exercise Christmas Hop. Commanding Officer No. 35 Squadron Wing Commander Scott Egan said the trip included Yorke Island, Badu and Kubin in the Torres Strait, and Bamaga and Cooktown in Cape York.

BHP manager recruited for new bauxite position MICHELLE Elvy will be the new general manager of Rio Tinto’s Weipa operations as the mining company looks to bring the Weipa and Gove leadership under one umbrella.

Ms Elvy was recruited from BHP where she has progressed through a number of leadership roles in her career, including head of integrated operations in Brisbane and most recently, head of operational services for the Belo Horizonte Area in Brazil.

She will start in March next year and also be in charge of the Gove operations.

“With Gove moving to a closure focus under the leadership of James Low, we have been working with Liss Tringove and Dan Kelleher on rethinking how we run Gove and Weipa more efficiently,” Rio Tinto managing director Kellie Parker wrote in a memo to staff.

“An engineer by profession, Michelle has more than 20 years’ experience in mining, resources and construction.

“We look forward to personally welcoming her in the New Year.”

Weipa a better place as a result of doctor’s work

NICK Cairns says it is with a heavy heart that he leaves Weipa.

The outgoing Western Cape Director of Medical Services has spent the past week packing boxes, passing on sought after household appliances and farewelling the community he has served for the past six years.

With three children under 10, Dr Nick said he would step back from hospital administration, having accepted a frontline medical position at the Atherton District Memorial Hospital, which will allow valuable time to spend with his young family.

“As you can imagine there is a lot of paperwork involved in running a hospital,” he said.

“And a lot of that paperwork is completed at home during the evening.”

James Cook University remote allied health coordinator Dr Alice Cairns, who is Dr Nick’s wife, will continue in her research role at the Weipa Integrated Health Service, working remotely from the family’s new Tableland base.

Having been responsible for more than 150 staff providing care to an area that stretches from Kowanyama to Mapoon, Dr Nick exits the Weipa health service having successfully introduced a range of additional medical services, increased staff training and research as well as expanding community outreach, with a swag of projects set to come to full fruition next year.

He has also worked diligently to lobby for increased localised medical services to reduce the need for Cape patients to travel to Cairns to seek treatment.

The clearest evidence of his success is the fact that the staff of full-time doctors in Weipa has grown from four to 11 during his time at the helm.

makers that the best medicine to provide to rural and remote communities must enable flexibility for medical staff to adapt to each unique geographical region.

Currently up to 500 patients must travel each year from the Weipa region to Cairns for CT scans.

With the cost burden of travel often hampering access to this routine procedure, Dr Nick said the introduction of CT scanning in Weipa next year would improve detection of the early onset of illnesses that cannot be located using radiography, x-ray and ultrasound.

JOB SATISFACTION RESEARCH has found that positive experiences in rural and remote clinics and extended exposure to these communities are significant influences in attracting and retaining medical staff.

With most facilities outside major centres facing an uphill battle to attract and retain graduates and seasoned professionals, Dr Nick said he focused on

building personal job satisfaction among each staff member to influence their decision to stay.

“The nature of our work means every day is very different compared to bigger hospitals, even for student doctors,” he said.

“I believe when people are working to the full extent of their capacities, there is a personal satisfaction in their job.”

He noted there were a number of staff that had spent time as medical students in Weipa, only to return for full-time employment – some even rising to senior positions at the hospital.

Dr Nick’s replacement, Dr Will Horwood, is already a familiar face to locals, having been based in Weipa for more than five years. He officially took the reins on November 27.

“Nick has carried a huge amount of work to get so many projects up and running,” Dr Horwood said.

“It is going to leave a huge gap without him.”

“Dr Cairns provided tremendous drive and vision, and total commitment, for medical services at Weipa and on the Western Cape during his six years in the position and he leaves the Weipa hospital in an enviable position for the future,” he said.

Dr Nick, who co-owns a boat in Weipa, said he would still be spotted in the Cape when the fish are biting.

“It is a great town and community. We have made lifelong friends and we leave it with many fond memories. It is a great place to bring up children,” he said.

“It is with a heavy heart professionally and personally that we leave Weipa, but we know (the health service) is left in good hands.”

Indigenous leader’s rise through the ranks recognised with award

BRAD Welsh, Rio Tinto’s first Indigenous general manager of operations, was last week named Exceptional Indigenous Person by the Queensland Resources Council.

The former acting GM of Rio Tinto Weipa, Mr Welsh is now the chief advisor to the Rio Tinto CEO on Indigenous affairs.

“Brad’s is an amazing story of achievement and the resources sector is very proud and fortunate to have him within our ranks,” QRC chief executive Ian Macfarlane said last week.

“Our Indigenous Awards enable us to highlight exceptional Indigenous people such as Brad who is a valuable role model to young Indigenous people.

“It’s been a long journey for Brad, a NSW Muruwari man, who was born and grew up in the Aboriginal community of Redfern.

“Starting his working life as a community worker in NSW, Brad worked in the Prime Minister’s office followed by a stint in the offices of the NSW Premier, where his interest in mining and its social and economic benefits to regional communities was piqued.

“In 2011, Brad started his mining career with Rio Tinto at Northparkes, and he hasn’t looked back since.”

Over the past seven years Mr Welsh has held several senior roles in Weipa.

“Curiosity has driven me my whole career; trying to understand how things work,” Mr Welsh said.

“I was that kid who asked those annoying questions.”

NEW POSITION MR Welsh will split his time between Weipa and Perth in 2021.

“This will allow my daughter to finish year 12 at the Western Cape College which we are very happy about,” he said.

“We love Weipa and the Western Cape and it will always hold a special place for our family.”

“This has the potential to support the best and brightest Indigenous talent all across the country to consider a career at Rio Tinto growing the business skills required to make a real difference in Indigenous communities all over the country.

“We know that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have the talent to perform roles all over the company.

“This program is designed to build the environment for success at growing the skills internally along with attracting skills externally to make our business stronger going forward.”

WEIPA FOOTPRINT SEVEN years of progression through the ranks in Weipa helped shape Mr Welsh’s career and mould him into a leader for the mining company.

“The Cape is a special place. I got the opportunity to learn from Traditional Owners about the rich and diverse cultural landscape across the Cape as well as our many operators and maintainers who have spent decades running and improving the Weipa business,” he said.

“I was fortunate enough to have played a role in the development and execution of the Amrun project which is a mine that was developed in partnership with Traditional Owners to respect the cultural landscape, as well as sup-

port Weipa and the Western Cape communities for another 40 years.

“While we never had a plan to stay so long in Weipa I will always be proud to have played a part in the important work that takes place in this region.

“Finally, I also learnt that Weipa is a place where you have the opportunity to branch out and grow your skills in the business.

“I was able to successfully move from a community relations position into operational roles and then perform the role of general manager of operations.

“This would never have happened without the support of my colleagues and leaders who showed a real commitment to my development. I will always be grateful for this.

“You can never do these roles alone, so I am enormously thankful to everyone that helped during my time at Weipa operations.”

NEXT CHALLENGE RECHARTING the relationship

between Rio Tinto and Traditional Owners is what Mr Welsh is most looking forward to in his new role.

“I also feel positive about our efforts to develop Indigenous leaders in the corporate sector,” he said.

“Rio Tinto was the first mining company to recognise Native Title and built significant, positive engagement from this with Indigenous communities.

“Today, while we have a long road to travel to rebuild trust with Indigenous partners, I am confident that with time and genuine commitment we can again be a force for good for future generations of Indigenous people.

“There are very few times in your career you get the opportunity to make significant change in such a large company.

“I still believe strongly in our company and I, along with many others, are determined to helping improve the business so that host communities welcome Rio Tinto partnerships.”

Dr Will ready to take reins at growing Weipa hospital WEIPA has a new head doctor with the appointment of Dr Will Horwood as the Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service’s new director of medical services.

He replaces Dr Nick Cairns, who has left for Atherton.

TCHHS executive director of medical services Tony Brown said the appointment of Dr Horwood would ensure continuity of service and experience at Weipa.

“Dr Horwood has worked at Weipa Integrated Health Service since 2015 and is very well-known and highly regarded within the Cape community,” he said.

“I am very pleased we have been able to fill Dr Cairns’s position from within the ranks of the already-established Weipa medical workforce team.

“Dr Horwood brings a high level of experience, commitment and passion to his new appointment and I welcome him to the position.

“I’d also like to pay tribute to Dr Cairns and wish him and his family well in their new home.

“Dr Cairns provided tremendous drive and vision for medical services at Weipa and on the Western Cape during his six years in the position and he leaves the Weipa hospital in an enviable position.”

would bring significant expansions in services at Weipa Hospital, with the introduction of a new CT scanning service, as well as the reintroduction of birthing to the hospital.

“These are exciting times for Weipa and Western Cape health services, and I am looking forward to helping drive these and other service improvements forward,” he said last week.

“As well as the new CT scanner and the forthcoming birthing service, we will also have a new primary healthcare centre at Weipa Hospital.

“It would be nice to help reduce the need for people to go to hospital in the first place with better primary care.

“We will also be continuing to expand the Cape York Kidney Care Program and our visiting ENT services.”

Dr Horwood said he and wife Margot had enjoyed living in Weipa since first arriving in 2015.

“We have four daughters, three of whom have been born since we moved to Weipa, and we all love life up here. It’s a great place to raise a young family,” he said.

“Personally, I like to play a bit of squash, run and swim but kid wrangling seems to take up most of the time outside of work!”

Cattleman lauded by federal MP

MEMBER for Leichhardt Warren Entsch has paid tribute to Cape York beef tycoon D’arcy Byrnes.

Speaking to parliament, Mr Entsch said the nation had lost a “great Far North Queenslander”.

He said the rural pioneer had built a vertically integrated empire that included cattle stations, fattening blocks, an abattoir, bulk storage facilities and wholesale butcheries, which employed more than 150 people.

“You could say that D’Arcy was one of the first proponents of the paddock to the plate concept,” Mr Entsch told parliament.

“You can find Byrnes meats on the menu of pubs, restaurants, hotels, eateries and other butcher stores across the region.

“I’m sure that there are thousands of people who have enjoyed D’Arcy’s products over the years as they fired up their backyard barbecue.

“I must admit I’ve eaten my fair share of Byrnes Quality Meats over the years, and the cuts of meat have never disappointed.”

Mr Entsch praised Mr Byrnes for his commitment to Cape York, including keeping the MP abreast with developments in the road conditions throughout each wet season.

Christmas comes to life in Weipa ANYONE who said herding cats was difficult has never tried to keep the attention of 40 hyperactive tweens.

But that was the job that fell on Weipa Town Authority chairman Michael Rowland and about two dozen parents who gathered at the Eat Street car park on Tuesday evening for the unveiling of the Community Christmas Tree lights.

With the children counting the days to both the beginning of the school holidays and the arrival of Santa, the scenes of glorious chaos could be well understood.

of the tree long enough for Mr Rowland to lead the countdown – and with the flick of a switch, Eat Street was lit up with a festive display that will welcome families passing through the town’s main thoroughfare for the remainder of the month.

Weipa mum Chantelle Benford said it was the first time she had brought Emmadeen, 6, and Koby, 2, to the light unveiling.

“We don’t have much family here, so this event is about celebrating our Weipa Christmas and creating some memories for our kids,” she said.

Electrician glad to be back home

KANE Christie says his interest in electrical work was sparked as a boy when he would watch the tradesmen at his Rocky Point home.

He admits that qualifying as an electrician was the only job he had ever really wanted.

“From the time I was young I would follow the electricians around whenever they came over to my house to do some work,” the owner/operator of Western Cape Electrical said.

“I was probably getting in their way to be honest – but I wanted to see what they were doing.

“From the time I learnt about it at school, there was just something about electricity that I found really interesting.

“I wanted to know how it worked – it was like some kind of magic to me.”

With our reliance on ever evolving and increasingly complex technology, electricians are dealing with higher demands for their services than ever before.

Despite this, figures from the Australian Industry and Skills Committee show the number of skilled electricians available in Australia has fallen since 2018.

The shortage of qualified electricians is so dire that even government efforts to attract tradies from overseas has consistently failed to reach the desired quota.

The skill shortage is felt no worse than in rural and remote communities, where less than 10 per cent of electricians work in domestic and commercial repairs and maintenance.

Mr Christie is among the rare breed of regionally-based electricians who have worked in mining construction and progressed to overseeing big commercial projects, as well as smaller domestic work.

Kane Christie from Western Cape Electrical made the decision to start his own business in Weipa at the start of the year and he’s not having any regrets.

Mr Christie commenced his apprenticeship in Weipa and continued building following stints in Port Hedland and Mount Isa. He said this has enabled him to move from being on tools fulltime to working as a leading hand and finally supervising a team of up to a dozen tradies on major projects.

The former Western Cape College student said his decision to start his own domestic and commercial business in Weipa in February came after he felt a strong desire to return to his home town to be with family and friends after more than a decade away.

“I was in Mount Isa but I wanted to come home,” he said last week.

“Starting my own business was something I always had in the back of my mind.

“Weipa was the logical choice – it is so laidback with lots of good people.

“It’s where my family and friends live. It’s where I feel most comfortable.”

Like any fledging business, Mr Christie’s family and friends proved an invaluable resource to find his earliest customers in Weipa.

Less than 12 months in and Mr Christie has an increasing number of loyal clients, with workloads across the domestic, commercial and mining sectors.

“From the beginning I have focused on a higher quality of work – which means punctuality, professionalism and cleanliness – it’s just common sense, but I think it’s made a huge difference,” he said.

“Tradies have a bit of a reputation for being unreliable and for not cleaning up after themselves.

“Many of my customers have been surprised to see me pull out a dustpan and broom and actually clean up following a job.”

These early successes have enabled Mr Christie to expand his operations, becoming an authorised agent to repair the much-used Engel fridges.

Having already performed a few jobs at Coen, Mr Christie said he also

plans to expand his business next year to offer his expertise to all communities across the Cape.

In the lead up to the coming storm season, Mr Christie said he would be able to offer repairs or installations to TV antennas as well as

the ability to construct additional TV points in local homes.

“Like any small business, it’s been a rocky road to begin with,” he said.

“I am enjoying the new challenge and really enjoying being back in Weipa.”

Work experience opens doors to future careers AS demand grows for mining workers, a group of students from the Cape York Leaders Program have participated in work experience at Rio Tinto Weipa to explore the pathways on offer for their journey to work life.

With a focus on mechanical engineering, asset management, diesel fitting and light vehicles, the three secondary students from Queensland boarding schools attended four days of work experience at Rio Tinto Weipa.

It is a burgeoning time to consider a career in resources, with a

recent forecast from the Australian Resources and Energy Group concluding an additional 20,000 mining sector workers will be needed nationwide over the next five years – more than one-quarter of these positions will be in Queensland.

Our nation is also a global leader in mining education with five Australian universities listed among the top 10 higher education providers for mineral and mining engineering courses in the 2020 QS World University Rankings.

was an opportunity to gain practical experience in what a career in the mining sector might entail.

“As I became more comfortable in the workplace it felt like the days went by so quickly,” one student said.

“It didn’t take me long to adjust to the work hours and routine. I am keen to apply for an apprenticeship when I finish school.”

Studies have found 73 per cent of employers who take on work experience students have, at some stage, recruited them as permanent staff.

Wik Awards shine a light on top students WITH songs, dances and even a TikTok mashup, Aurukun State School has celebrated its accomplishments at its Wik awards last week.

Aurukun State School deputy principal Kathy Ona said the annual awards ceremony, which is the major end of year awards night for the school, was among the highest attended events on the community’s calendar.

This year the boarding students who returned to Aurukun due to the COVID outbreak, yet continued to study diligently, gained a special mention.

MC for the awards ceremony was Waynead Wolmby, who returned to community after completing boarding school.

He has since gone on to com-

plete a Certificate III in Youth Work and is now employed as a teacher’s assistant.

Ms Ona said Mr Wolmby planned to further his education next year and remained a positive role model.

Teachers happy to be rid of 2020

WHILE students pack up their pencils and books as another school year ends, some Western Cape College teachers are also saying farewell to the Weipa community.

Cape York Weekly spoke to three departing teachers who agreed that 2020 was an educational challenge like no other, with parents and educators working in daily collaboration to ensure students could push through their class programs in the pandemic.

Napranum campus prep teacher Alyce Jose and Weipa campus Grade 1 teacher Jasmine Di Leo saw their classes divided in half between those children who were in home lockdown and those who were still classroom-based because their parents were working.

The teachers devised a range of creative activities to maintain the wellbeing and motivation of students, including yoga and meditation lessons led by a friendly monster, challenges such as finding 20 backyard items to rank from largest to smallest, as well as housebound math puzzles and games.

An initiative that drew widespread appreciation was postcards sent from the teachers to each household, with individualised messages that thanked parents for their support and encouraged students for their efforts over the lockdown period.

“We encouraged parents to take

photos of their kids as they were participating in the activities and we posted them on the school’s Facebook page. It was about building college connectiveness,” Ms Jose said.

Ms Di Leo said it was the support of the Weipa community that enriched her experience in the Cape over the past five years.

“From the time I arrived off the plane during the wet season there was someone to pick me up and take me to my new home,” she said.

“You felt like you were among family from the beginning.”

Performing arts teacher Liam Richards made local headlines earlier this year after facing a lifethreatening stingray attack.

The camping and fishing enthusiast has nevertheless remained undeterred, reporting that he is on the mend and vowing to still get his outdoors fix despite relocating to Brisbane.

He said the opportunity to travel to Mapoon and introduce students to instrumental lessons and dance performance was among the highlights of his career.

“Music is a cross-cultural language and whether it is playing an instrument or dancing or any other performing arts, it links a community together instantly,” he said.

“We encourage the students to perform in their own cultural context and encourage them to understand what music and dance means.”

Departing teachers Jasmine Di Leo, Alyce Jose and Liam Richards said their connectedness to the Western Cape College community made it difficult to leave Weipa this week.

Cape digs deep for women in need KAREN Barlow struggles to tell this story.

Two decades ago a relative found herself in every woman’s worst nightmare – trapped in a physically and mentally abusive relationship while seven months pregnant and caring for her three other young children.

She looked for an escape route that could give some safety to her cornered family and found it one day while dropping her kids off at the local school.

In a moment of clarity and desperation, she returned to the school parking lot, loaded her kids into the car and drove away from her tormentor. She left with nothing.

Christine Owens adds another story. When she began working as Weipa Community Care community development officer about 12 months ago, Department of Child Safety officers called into the centre to request women’s sanitary products after explaining they had a 14-year-old in their care who had needed – but due to neglect had not been able to access – tampons for the previous two years.

As we approach the weeks before Christmas it is a stark reminder that festive joy does not come to every household.

The Western Cape Women’s Crisis Shelter has this year provided short term crisis accommodation to 92 women and 49 children with a further 137 women and 22 children requiring mobile support.

The in-take of scarred families is expected to spike during the coming Christmas period, as it does every year.

“I don’t think people fully understand what it means to have nothing,” Ms Owens told Cape York Weekly.

“There are many women who no fault of their own, don’t have the basics – they don’t have clothes or shoes or money or soap. They have nothing.”

In an effort to give a helping hand to the empty-handed, Cape York women have donated armfuls of hygiene products, shampoos, soaps and even some make up.

Operating locally for the past six years, the It’s in the Bag: Share the Dignity nationwide campaign encourages women to purchase essential hygiene products and donate them in a handbag for those less fortunate.

More than 50 bags, which was almost double last year’s effort, were collected from a variety of groups and individuals this year.

“We must never forget that these women could be any one of us. They have become trapped in their circumstances,” Ms Owens said last week.

The local bags, in addition to donations from Cairns, will be distributed to women struggling in Weipa, Napranum, Aurukun and Mapoon, as required, in the weeks leading to Christmas and into next year, Ms Barlow said.

2020 WCC Academic Awards 2020 Queensland Training Awards On Monday 16 november and Tuesday 17 november 2020, we celebrated our annual WCC Academic Awards.

On Friday 11 September 2020, WCC celebrated the Queensland Training Awards with three members of our WCC community being recognised as part of the Regional Finals.

This year saw our awards ceremonies conducted differently with the awards being celebrated in front of our student’s peers.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the awards were live-streamed and celebrated locally with family, friends and community in our Performing Arts Centre.

Australia’s aged care problem in desperate need of govt attention AUSTRALIA’S aged care sector has been the subject of more than 30 major inquiries and reviews since 1997.

It is fair to say the findings have been highly critical of the way aged care is run in this country.

Many of these concerns have been brought to light again – along with new issues raised – in the ongoing Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety.

Yet, as the royal commission has noted, successive Australian governments have shown a “lack of willingness to commit to change”.

Responses often come years after the review and recount what has been done in an almost tangential way.

Even the establishment of the royal commission was not based on previous inquiries or recommendations, but in response to media exposés of the appalling conditions in some aged care facilities.

From these dysfunctional circumstances, three questions arise.

First, what are the ongoing issues with aged care in Australia?

Second, why have successive governments been comfortable making do with piecemeal solutions rather than truly “fixing” aged care, once and for all?

Finally, and most perplexingly, why have Australian voters let them get away with it?

It is important to emphasise that aged care is predominantly a federal government responsibility.

The 1997 Aged Care Act is the main law covering governmentfunded aged care.

This includes rules for funding, regulation, approval of providers, quality of care and the rights of those in care.

Since 2019, the federal Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission Act regulates complaints, sanctions and enforcement, but has been criticised for lacking teeth.

The 1997 act diluted many preexisting regulatory protections, such as strict financial accreditation and staffing requirements, and opened the sector up to privatisation.

At the time, concerns were raised the new regime could compromise standards of care in aged care facilities and disadvantage older people on lower incomes.

The concerns were raised again and amplified in subsequent years.

For example, in 2011, a Productivity Commission report noted Australia’s aged care system needed a “fundamental redesign”.

Here is a brief summary of the recurring issues raised in multiple reports:  The huge difficulty people have navigating the aged care system, including finding accurate information about facilities;  Failure to meet the needs of vulnerable older people  Poor quality care, especially for those with dementia and other disabilities;

 The use of chemical or physical restraints;  Inappropriate staff ratios and poor training;  The rising cost of care, especially in an ageing population;  Adherence to accreditation standards;  Ineffective complaints mechanisms.

One of the major hurdles to real reform is the relationship between the aged care industry and the federal government.

The government funds the sector and provides a relatively “light-touch” oversight, while the providers attend to the day-to-day running of the facilities.

However, there is concern this alignment has meant successive governments are not as involved as they should be and proposals for change are diluted by the influence of industry lobbyists.

Another reason for governments’ reluctance to intervene is many of the providers are “too big to fail”.

A facility’s licence and government funding can be withdrawn if standards are not met. Yet this rarely happens.

Why? Because if a licence is revoked, residents need somewhere to go.

The issues here can be seen in the closure of the Earle Haven nursing home in July 2019.

Here, 68 elderly people were left homeless and had to be moved to hospitals and other aged care facilities.

As a further example, Bupa, one of Australia’s largest providers, continues to operate, despite sanctions or failing fundamental assessments.

After so many inquiries and so many horror headlines, the prob-

lems in aged care are well and truly common knowledge.

But do Australians care enough about aged care for it to influence their vote – and so, influence the way governments respond?

If we cast our minds back to the 2019 federal election campaign, the hot button issue concerning older people was the potential demise of franking credits and negative gearing.

In-home and residential aged care barely rated a mention in the campaigns of the major parties.

Even now, despite the publicity surrounding the royal commission, if an election was held today, would this issue actually influence voting intentions? Sadly, it seems unlikely.

During the July 2020 EdenMonaro byelection, a survey of nearly 700 voters showed while 84 per cent believed the aged care

system was “in crisis”, this influenced the vote of less than 4 per cent of respondents.

It also ranked last in a list of seven issues of importance.

When heartfelt concern does not translate to winning votes, there is little incentive for the federal government to provide meaningful solutions to well-documented problems.

We only need to look to the record spending in the 2020 Budget, which provided only 23,000 extra home care packages and deferred consideration of funding for residential aged care until the royal commission’s final report next year.

Why does concern for the plight of people in aged care fail to generate public action?

We suggest it is because many Australians consciously or unconsciously have ageist attitudes – that older people are inherently not important.

On this front, look no further than arguments made by prominent commentators about the fate of older people during COVID-19.

Yes, most fair-thinking Australians care about our older citizens, yet until either we or our family members are directly impacted, we do not prioritise it.

If we don’t care enough or care about other things more, nothing will change.

And, while this remains the case, the government will have no reason to do more than just tinker with an unsatisfactory status quo.

Kindy kids prepared for next step WALKING in single file to the stage wearing their flowing black gowns, the class of 2020 has graduated.

About 80 proud parents and grandparents gathered at the Storm Surge Centre on Wednesday to celebrate the Cape Kids childcare centre’s kindy class take the stage to celebrate the end of their kindergarten education.

There were 31 students at the ceremony, which was the biggest class to graduate, following the centre’s expansion.

They will now move on to prep

school, with the majority remaining in Weipa for the next school year.

For the weeks leading to the graduation, the children had rehearsed up to three times each day the songs, Innae Kapuana (which is about goanna hunting) as well My First Day of School.

Miss Peters, who has seen her second class of Weipa students graduate, said it was always sad to see the kids leave the centre.

“But they are never far away – I still run into them and their families at Woolworths,” she laughed.

Nate still the king of the kids in Far North

CAPE York basketball icon Nate Jawai is still one of the most popular athletes in the Far North, highlighted by the love shown to him by students in the NPA and on Thursday Island.

The Bamaga big man visited schools in the region with Taipans Indigenous Programs Manager and former NBL star Kerry Williams.

“Nate is a positive influence for his community, and when the kids hear he is coming, they make sure they get to school, so they do not miss out,” Williams said.

“Nate speakes at assemblies about his journey, and then plays games, hands out T-shirts, and reiterates his respect message – there’s always a lot of excitement.”

Aurukun Township is located a 1.5 hour flight from Cairns and has a full range of community services including airport, aged and child care, school, playgroup, community centre, splash park, supermarket and health clinic.

THEY say the longest journey starts with the smallest step and there is no doubt the sporting path of Justin Hyytinen began with a very simple gesture.

In fact, his first steps in martial arts only began when he won a free lesson in a raffle.

“I was at Wine by the Sea in 2014 and I put my name down in a raffle and won a free class,” he admitted.

“I thought that I might as well just give it a go. I was looking for something different and from the

moment I began martial arts I was just hooked.”

In just a few short years Justin has gone from walking into the training hall with a free lesson pass to earning a first dan black belt and instructing the junior and senior classes in the art of self-defence.

His official title is Sa Bum Nim at Weipa Rhee Taekwondo.

With Rhee Taekwondo celebrating 50 years in Australia, Justin said the sport was open to anyone from five years to 75 years and more adults should consider giving it a go.

“It has obvious health benefits

but there is a real sense of accomplishment as well,” he said.

Last week about 10 students took part in the final belt grading of the year, with a mix of adults and youngsters demonstrating their commitment and progress.

“We have people of all ages enjoy the training because there is a great deal of self-discipline involved in martial arts,” Justin said.

“It’s about building a healthy body, mind and soul.”

Justin said the COVID lockdown had reduced class numbers, which he hoped would increase when training resumes in 2021.
