CYNTHIA Lui has not been to Weipa, Napranum or Mapoon this year and has gone more than 400 days since her last visit. With six days until the polls close, Ms Lui’s major rivals are asking Cape York residents to vote the Labor incumbent out of office in the Cook election. Between Weipa, Napranum and Mapoon there are more than 2500 eligible voters – 10 per cent of those who turned out for the Cook electorate in 2017. But the incumbent MP has not been seen in 2020. Ms Lui’s last appearance was in late August last year when she was with Minister Grace Grace in Napranum. The first-time MP was meant to visit Weipa and Napranum last month but cancelled her trip at the eleventh hour. A Labor insider said there was a growing concern Ms Lui would be voted out this Saturday. “It’s going to be very close. We might not know on election night,” they said. “Not visiting Weipa and those surrounding communities will hurt Cynthia.” In the 2017 election, Ms Lui won about 37 per cent of the pri-

mary vote in Weipa, more than places like Cooktown, Mareeba, Mossman and Port Douglas. In Napranum she won two thirds of the primary vote. Ms Lui refused to speak to Cape York Weekly.
Her office was emailed last week and responded within a day, requesting questions in advance, which felt was unnecessary. However, an interview time was arranged for 2.30pm Friday. At 2.10pm on Friday, Ms Lui’s

office manager Sharryn Howes called to cancel. “Something has come up,” Ms Howes said. Another interview time was not put on the table. When asked if she knew when her boss last visited Weipa, Ms Howes said “it wasn’t long ago”. She was shocked when told that Ms Lui had not been in Weipa for 14 months. “Has it been that long? That can’t be right.” Ms Howes confirmed on the call that it was in fact correct when details of that last trip were passed on. All of Ms Lui’s major rivals in Saturday’s election – the LNP’s Nipper Brown, Katter Party’s Tanika Parker and One Nation’s Brett “Beaver” Neal have made at least one trip to Weipa during the campaign. Speaking to Cape York Weekly in Weipa last week, Mr Brown said it was unfathomable that his Labor rival had not made the effort to visit the community. “I’ve been here twice and had to drive, which I like,” he said. “If I’m elected, I would be here at least once a quarter. And for more than just one day, because you can’t do much in one day.” More election coverage – Page 7

Latest films to be screened at Kumrumja Centre By MATT NICHOLLS
WEIPA will soon get access to the latest Hollywood films after an $80,000 upgrade to the Kumrumja Centre projector, it was revealed on Saturday. Weipa Town Authority chairman Michael Rowland told residents at the community information session that the money for the projector came from Rio Tinto’s Community Development Fund. “It means we can get new release films just like in Cairns and show them here,” he told the gathering.
WTA member Jaime Gane discusses plans for a community garden through Western Cape Landcare.
“I’m hoping that in the dry season we can also have movies in the park so people can take a picnic blanket and enjoy a film.” Mr Rowland said there
were a number of positive infrastructure projects about to start in Weipa in the next year or two. Funding has been secured to install a footpath along
Northern Avenue – the road where Michael Bowden was tragically killed two years ago – while plans are in place for pedestrian access between Weipa Hospital and the shopping centre. Weipa residents will soon get smart water meters on their properties. “This will help us monitor water use and find any leaks in the system,” Mr Rowland said. Other speakers at the forum included Local Disaster Management Group chair Stretch Noonan, WTA member Jaime Gane, Rio Tinto
Weipa acting general manager Dan Kelleher, Queensland Health’s Kindee Lawty and Sergeant TJ Baker from PCYC Napranum. Mr Noonan spoke about the La Nina formation and the likelihood of increased cyclones and monsoonal activity this wet season. He also touched on how the community handled the COVID-19 outbreak. Ms Gane discussed plans to grow the Western Cape Landcare organisation and launch a community garden, which has been talked about for several years.
Ms Lawty, the director of nursing at Weipa Hospital, gave an insight about the handling of COVID-19 and the procedures in place across the health network. She also confirmed work would soon begin on creating a space for the new CT scanner. Sergeant Baker busted some myths about the PCYC and highlighted the strong work achieved in the community on a daily basis. More coverage from the community information session in next week’s Cape York Weekly.

THOSE passing by wouldn’t have noticed a thing, but history was made in the Port of Weipa last week. The Orient Cavalier set a new record for a bauxite shipment out of Rio Tinto’s Lorim Point terminal. It was loaded with 99,431mt of bauxite ore. Michael Austin, Rio Tinto’s marine superintendent in Weipa, said the stars aligned for such a big load. “The Orient Cavalier is a post

panama class vessel which was chartered in to load a larger than usual cargo, taking advantage of the 2.73m high tide available on October 21,” he said. “Rio Tinto Weipa operations, working closely with other authorities and agencies, successfully coordinated loading operations which allowed the vessel to load 99,431mt of bauxite ore and safely sail on the evening high tide. “This is a record bauxite ore loading for the Rio Tinto Lorim Point Terminal.” Mr Austin said support came
from Marine Safety Queensland and Vessel Traffic Services, Ports North pilots, SLTA draft surveyors, ships agent and vessel officers. STEADY YEAR FOR RIO RIO Tinto Weipa has been able to ride the turbulent wave that is 2020, acting operations general manager Dan Kelleher said. “I’m really pleased to say that as of our end of month September, year to date figures production was up 7.7 per cent on the same period last year at 27.08MT of bauxite,” he said at Saturday’s community information session.
“Group bauxite production in the period was 43MT and 2020 guidance of 55 to 58 MT was maintained, indicating Rio Tinto is on track to meet or beat last year’s production of 55MT.” Mr Kelleher said the company still faced challenges ahead, pointing to low bauxite prices out of Guinea in Africa, as well as uncertainty from China. But he told community members there was reason to be optimistic, believing Rio Tinto was committed to mining in Cape York, even when operations at Andoom and East Weipa expire.

Fishing Classic ready to be shared with the world TOP FIVE PRIZES By MATT NICHOLLS
CORONAVIRUS claimed most of Cape York’s major events this year but not the Weipa Fishing Classic. Normally staged in May, this year’s event was postponed at a time most thought it would be impossible to stage any kind of gathering in 2020. Committee president Aaron Schleich said there were times when he thought it would be called off. “The easy decision would have been to call it off in April, but we have been lucky in Cape York,” he said. The committee has worked tirelessly this year to ensure the event is a success, knowing that it is an essential fundraiser for the community. It has also embraced change for the better. This year, people from around the world will be able to tune into the action from the weigh-in and follow the major raffle. A company from Brisbane has flown in to manage the live stream, which will be broadcast
1. 5.3m Quintrex Renegade valued at over $40,000 2. 4.2m Aluvan Razor valued at over $20,000 3. $10,000 in cold, hard cash 4. Emerald cut Adamas diamond valued at over $5500 5. Weipa Houseboats Package valued at over $3000 on the Weipa Fishing Classic’s Facebook page. “We can’t have a crowd at the oval so we want people to go to the local pubs and clubs and watch the stream,” Mr Schleich said on Sunday. “They are COVID compliant and it also gives back to the local businesses. “You can also watch it at home and I’m sure there will be some viewing parties.” Those in the major draw must
keep their phones handy during the raffle times as ticket holders need to make contact with the committee. “We have a few rules that are available to read now so people should be aware of their obligations if they want to be in the running to win a prize.” While this year’s event will be like no other before it, the fishing should be at it’s best. It might be the hottest time of the year but the wind isn’t due to
blow and that’s usually a problem in May. “The only problem we’ve got is that the barra season is closed, so that’s why we’ve replaced the species with mangrove jack,” Mr Schleich explained. “There’s a fairly comprehensive list of rules for participants because we want anglers to do the right thing. “Those who enter the fishing competition should read them on before they go out.”

Councils struggle to keep up with demand COUNCILS across Cape York, including the Weipa Town Authority, are asking residents to reduce their water consumption as they struggle to keep up with the demand. It’s not uncommon for this time of year for water to become an issue, WTA chair Michael Rowland said. “We are not running out of water, we just can’t pump enough to keep up,” he said.
“Everyone is trying to do the right thing by keeping their lawns green and their gardens growing, but it’s too much for the town.” The WTA has led the way by cutting back on watering its parks and gardens. “It’s a hard decision to let things brown off, but it will rain soon and it’ll become green very quickly,” Mr Rowland said. “We are not asking peo-
ple to completely stop, but we ask them to cut down on watering as much as they possibly can.” The same issues have been felt in Kowanyama, Mapoon and other towns. Storms and rain are forecasted this week and the weather bureau is predicting a good wet season. Read about the Bureau of Meteorology’s seasonal forecast on Page 11.

Pandemic prompts more NEWS IN BRIEF services at a local level
Motorcycle fatality in Cape
EXPECTING mums are making fewer trips to Cairns as a result of a new service implemented at Weipa Hospital. Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service allied health professional lead Amy O’Hara said 88 women had benefitted from the new maternal and foetal ultrasound scanner since it was introduced in May. “Previously, pregnant women in Cape York communities requiring both specialised and routine maternal and foetal scans would have had to travel to Cairns, Townsville or even Brisbane for the service,” she said. “But with the introduction of strict lockdowns in First Nations communities across the Far North, this became extremely problematic, especially with the need for people to quarantine in Cairns for 14 days prior to returning home. “Many of these women were unable to isolate from their other children and it proved difficult for them to isolate in the biosecurity hotel with children. “Even before the lockdown period, a trip to Cairns for a maternal and foetal ultrasound and an appointment with a specialist often required a minimum three nights stay, which was a significant inconvenience for them and their families. “This prompted us to look at ways we could undertake these scans and specialist appointments within our own region and provide culturally appropriate care closer to home for our community members.” Ms O’Hara said telehealth technology allowed medical imaging services at Weipa, including maternal and foetal ultrasounds, to be linked directly with specialists in Cairns, Townsville and Brisbane who were then able to review the scans in real time and provide appropriate advice for ongoing care and management of patients.
A MAN has died following a single-vehicle crash in Cape York on Friday morning. Police said preliminary inquiries indicated that about 9am a motorcycle was heading north on the Telegraph Road at Wenlock when the rider came off the motorcycle between Batavia Downs Road and the Moreton Telegraph Station. The rider, a Bundaberg man in his 40s, died at the scene. Forensic Crash Unit officers are investigating the cause of the tragic event.
Apprentice awards night
Weipa Integrated Health Service sonographer Kellie McKenzie performs a maternal and foetal scan on a client that will be shared with specialists outside the region via telehealth.
More and more services are coming to Weipa Hospital, with a CT scanner expected to be up and running by February next year.
“This provides a comprehensive specialist appointment for the patient, reduces patient travel requirements and upskills local staff in complex imaging,” she said. “In most cases, even if patients travel to Weipa from other communities for their scan, they can have their scan and return home the same day.” Ms O’Hara said the service had proved so successful, the Torres and Cape HHS was continuing with it despite the easing of travel restrictions to Cape York communities from July. “The steady expansion of medical imaging services at Weipa, including the introduction of a CT scanner service
from early 2021, means even more people will be able to have their scans closer to home and not have to travel outside our region to do so,” she said. TCHHS chief executive Bev Hamerton said the pandemic lockdown had shown the health service could not rely upon specialists physically visiting the region when there were severe travel restrictions. “We decided that introducing a higher level of telehealthdelivered care would increase self-sufficiency in our regions and bring care closer to home and this is what we are currently in the process of doing,’’ Ms Hamerton said. “Critical to the success of this
process is the implementation of an integrated multi-disciplinary primary health care patient information system in the Cape York region during 2020-21 to share information between clinicians across a range of clinical disciplines. “We plan to continue transforming and positioning our health service as a leader in digital rural and remote primary health care and ensure we are in a good position to respond to any future regional crises.’’ Ms Hamerton said some of the changes included: Management plans for all vulnerable patients within Torres and Cape (60 per cent of our population) Establishment of a centralised Clinical Coordination Hub that works with local teams to assess the required care across a range of medical disciplines. The hub also will continue to identify other areas of clinical care currently sourced from outside the health service that could be delivered internally A 75 per cent increase in telehealth appointments, ensuring patients can receive specialist care closer to home.

Preferences to be crucial in deciding winner of Cook By MATT NICHOLLS
THE next Member of Cook will get the job via preferences, which puts Labor’s Cynthia Lui in danger at this Saturday’s election. Of the seven candidates who have published how-to-vote cards, six of them have placed Ms Lui seventh or eighth. It means that if voters number the boxes the way the candidates want them to, the incumbent MP could be on the way out. James Cook University political expert Maxine Newlands said that people usually picked their own preferences, unless they were undecided voters. “If they turn up on the day with no idea who to vote for, they are more likely to follow a how-tovote card,” she said. “But a lot of people have voted already as the pre-polls have been open for a week. We are seeing more and more pre-polling with every election.” Based on Cape York Weekly’s analysis of every Cook candidate’s

how-to-vote card, Tanika Parker is the best-placed candidate to knock Ms Lui out of office. In fact, the Katter’s Australia Party rookie is number two on Ms Lui’s preferences. Ms Parker is also second with One Nation’s Brett “Beaver” Neal, as well as the phantom United Australia Party candidate Stephen Goulmy.
Established 1988
The other candidate to receive preferential preferences is former Wujal mayor Desmond Tayley. The North Queensland First candidate is never lower than fourth on any of his rivals’ how-tovote cards. That can’t be said of the Greens’ Deby Ruddell, who is the only candidate to receive a worse ranking than Ms Lui.
One Nation, independent Yodie Batzke and the LNP’s Nipper Brown are all around the middle. Dr Newlands said despite what happens in Cook, Labor is likely to retain power when the polls close on Saturday. “I never like to pick but the incumbent went in strong and will likely remain strong,” she said. “North Queensland is quite red at the moment but there are a lot of seats in the balance. “Cook will come down to preferences but there needs to be a decent swing for things to change.” Pre-polling at remains in Weipa at Heritage Shopping Centre until Friday and moves to the Rocky Point Storm Surge Shelter for election day. SPORTSBET ODDS Yodie Batzke (IND) $67 Ed “Nipper” Brown (LNP) $4 Desmond Tayley (NQF) $21 Brett “Beaver” Neal (PHON) $10 Deby Ruddell (The Greens) $91 Tanika Parker (KAP) $3.50 Cynthia Lui (ALP) $1.95 Stephen Goulmy (UAP) $91
HALF of the candidates don’t live in the electorate, the other half have been in the election race for five minutes. The quality of candidates for Cook voters is below the standard required for one of Queensland’s most important seats. Cape York Weekly is not in a position to endorse a candidate ahead of Saturday’s election. Frankly, we don’t think any of the eight stand out. What we do know is that to serve the people of Cook, you must be willing to work harder than any other politician. While it isn’t the biggest seat in the state, it’s the most diverse and difficult to get around. Our seat has it’s own “southeast corner”, revolving around Mareeba, Mossman and Port Douglas. That’s where the bulk of the votes are and that’s where most candidates have focused their attention in the campaign. But there is so much more to the seat than those towns. In Cape York, there are three major hubs – Weipa, Cooktown and the NPA. There has been next to no love for them. The Indigenous communities of Kowanyama, Pormpuraaw, Aurukun, Mapoon, Coen, Hope Vale, Lockhart River and Wujal Wujal appear to be just a blip on the radar. They deserve a strong voice. Then there is the Torres Strait, one of the most beautiful places on the planet, yet one of the most disadvantaged. Torres Strait people face challenges that Cape York residents couldn’t even imagine. Some islands are facing extinction due to rising seas caused by climate change. No matter who gets the nod on election night, the next Member for Cook must remember that they are there to represent the people – including the people that didn’t vote for them. This electorate can’t afford to have a silent or absent MP.

Housing a huge priority: councils MAYORS and councillors representing Queensland’s Indigenous councils gathered last week to discuss issues critical to their communities, like housing, connectivity, and financial sustainability, and to explore potential solutions. The Indigenous Leaders Forum met at the Gold Coast Convention Centre as part of this week’s 124th LGAQ Annual Conference. Lockhart River mayor and ILF chair Wayne Butcher said the forum was a vital chance for First Nations mayors to discuss shared challenges and to initiate strategies and campaigns to effect the changes necessary to advance the interests of their communities. “Indigenous mayors and coun-

cillors provide a strong voice for their local communities,” he said. “When those voices are united as one through forums like this, that message becomes even more powerful.”

Housing continued to be a key focus of discussions with mayors and councillors, with the ILF agreeing to maintain strident advocacy to the other tiers of government for more effective and enduring solutions. “Overcrowding is a pervasive issue that has devastating flow-on effects for Queensland’s First Nations communities, impeding advancement in health and education for our people,” Cr Butcher said. “This is a human rights issue that has finally been included in the Closing the Gap agenda. “Now it must be addressed with a long-term funding commitment from the state and federal governments to really make a difference
to the economic and social fabric of our communities. “If we address overcrowding, we can address other issues vital to closing the gap and improving the quality of life for Indigenous Queenslanders.” PORMPURAAW GONG THE co-founders of a life-saving women’s shelter in Pormpuraaw were awarded the Alison Woolla Memorial Award at the LGAQ conference. May Ballie and Myrtle Foote are the co-founders of Pormpur Paanthu. The centre provides a refuge and services to assist women and children experiencing domestic and family violence.
Through the creation of the centre, May and Myrtle have been instrumental in saving the lives and improving the futures of many women and children. They have also been active in expanding the services to include a safe place, specifically for children, through vacation and after school care, childcare, as well as a support service for men. Aurukun mayor Keri Tamwoy presented the inaugural Alison Woolla Memorial Award in honour of her late mother. Alison Woolla was a former mayor of Aurukun and dynamic reform leader who supported members of her community who were experiencing abuse.

Bush kindy kids learning outdoors WEDNESDAYS and Thursdays have become the best days of the week for both the kindergarten children and educators at Cape Kids in Weipa. For the past three months, two classes are taken out to the bush and beach behind the kindy to get a taste of nature. It’s an educational session and a great way to instil different values in the young minds. Cape York Weekly was last week invited on an expedition with one of the kindy classes. We spent an hour with the group of nine children, supervised by three adults, in what was a safe but exciting setting. “The kids love it and so do we,” teacher Mia de Jersey said.

“Some weeks we’ve had experts come out and talk to the kids about their field. “Last week we came across a huge snake skin, which was really exciting.” On their adventures, which have been expanded from two hours to three hours, the children are tasked with looking for birds, animal tracks and changes in the tree and plant life. With a wagon in tow so they can bring their morning tea, the kids pick up rubbish along the way and dispose of it back at the kindy, or recycle the cans and bottles for CAPS. “It’s a great way to get them into good habits for the future,” Ms de Jersey said.

Future minds given helping hand FROM collaborative game design and coding, to delivering engaging online learning, eight educational technology startups – all members of Rio Tinto’s Future Minds Accelerator – recently brought future skills courses to students and educators in Cape York. Last month, the Future Minds startups ran free, remote classes at seven schools in the Western Cape and Northern Peninsula Area. Western Cape College’s Weipa and Mapoon campuses, along with St Joseph’s Parish School Weipa were among them. It was the first year of a new, four-year program funded by a $10 million investment by Rio Tinto in a bold move to help teach Australia’s young people the skills they’ll need to thrive in the jobs of the future. Each startup selected for the
Accelerator was given a $50,000 grant from Rio Tinto, training and mentoring from the expert team of entrepreneurs at BlueChilli, and up to $100,000 in AWS Activate Credits from Amazon. Led by David Gonski AC, the Future Minds Advisory Council of Australian education, innovation and business leaders have offered founders valuable advice and guidance. “Now more than ever equal access to education is important for regional and remote areas of Australia,” Mr Gonski said. “I am delighted that the startups from the Future Minds Accelerator are helping bridge that gap and building these future skills in our young Australians.” The 14 startups in this cohort have developed solutions to help kids learn future skills, including:
Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Smart Cities, Sustainability, Online Game Development, Virtual Reality, Career Readiness, Entrepreneurship, Team Work, Imagination, Physical Health, Mental Health, and more. Rio Tinto Weipa acting general manager Dan Kelleher said: “Our world is ever-changing and it is important, now more than ever, to equip children with the skills they will need for a digital future. “We are helping to prepare young people by providing regional communities in the Western Cape access to programs like the Future Minds Accelerator that focus on critical thinking, problem solving, systems design and data analytics – all skills required to thrive in the careers of tomorrow.” Learn more at www.riotinto. com/news/stories/future-minds
Students from Western Cape College were able to ‘dial in’ and learn new skills as part of Rio Tinto’s Future Minds Accelerator program.
PRE-CYCLONE SEASON GREEN WASTE CLEAN-UP 2020
La Nina will bring more rain: bureau
BUREAU of Meteorolgy director Andrew Johnson says Cape York residents should be expecting more rain and possibly more cyclones than a typical wet season. A La Nina weather pattern has emerged, which usually brings more severe weather in Far North Queensland. However, “not all La Ninas are equal”, Mr Johnson said. “They are all different and all have unique characteristics and the La Nina we are projecting at the moment is not quite as strong as the one we experienced in 2010-11.” Mr Johnson said the tropics were particularly at risk. “We know on average we get 11 cyclones in the Australian region, not just in eastern Australia but over on the Indian Ocean and northern parts of the Timor and Arafura Sea,” he said. “So we are expecting at least that many or maybe a few more this summer.” The severity of cyclones could not yet be predicted this far out but Mr Johnson said the bureau had some of the world’s best meteorologists on the job. “Investment that governments have made over many years have upgraded the bureau’s capacity to anticipate tropical cyclones many days in advance compared to where we were years ago and also our capacity to predict the movement of tropical cyclones has really improved,” he said. Despite the short-term anticipated spike in cyclones, Mr Johnson said the bureau was projecting a long-term decrease due to climate change. “But our projections are pointing to at this stage that although there will be a decrease in the overall number of cyclones that there is a likelihood that their intensity will increase.”
Weipa Town Authority wishes to advise residents of Weipa that the annual pre-cyclone season clean-up of green waste will be conducted from 1 to 27 November, 2020. All items to be collected must be placed tidily on the front footpath of the property. The pick-up dates for your suburb are listed below. All items to be collected must be put out for collection by 5am of the morning your suburb is scheduled for collection. Items placed out after the scheduled pick-up times, not placed in the correct location, or are greater than 6m3 will not be collected. TYPES OF MATERIALS THAT WILL BE COLLECTED: Green waste only i.e. small tree branches and garden waste or any materials that are likely to become a missile. A maximum of 6m3 per residence will be collected. The removal of these items from your household will ensure a safe and healthy environment. NOTE: Batteries can be dropped off to the SES @ Ports Corp at Evans Landing wharf free of charge. The SES recycles batteries as part of their fundraising efforts. Waste oil can be dropped off at the Landfill. Please note: BUILDING, INDUSTRIAL & COMMERCIAL SITES WILL NOT BE SERVICED

after Red bench shines light on NRM content for domestic violence problem calendar REGULAR users of the Rocky Point playground would have noticed a new addition last week – a shiny red bench in the park. What they might not know is that the bench is symbolic. Installed by Weipa Community Care with support from Goodline and the Weipa Town Authority, the bench aims to shine a light on family and domestic violence. It’s an initiative of the Red Rose Foundation and Weipa Community Care hopes to install benches in Napranum and Mapoon, as well as more in Weipa. “The Red Bench Project was created by the Red Rose Foundation to build a permanent visible reminder, that domestic and family violence occurs within all of our communities,” Weipa Community Care CEO Josephine Tait said. In Australia last year, almost a third of all homicide and related offences were family and domestic violence (FDV) related. The majority (62%) involved the use of a weapon. Over half were victims of murder (59%). The number of FDV-related victims increased in most states and territories. Some states and territories reported an increase of up to 12%. There were a total of 8985 victims of FDV-related sexual assault.
Weipa Town Authority chairman Michael Rowland and Goodline’s Russell Scikluna with Weipa Community Care CEO Josephine Tait and support worker Lucy Waugh at the new red bench in the Rocky Point park.
“Weipa Community Care has been a strong advocate for the domestic and family violence sector for more than 30 years,” Ms Tait said last week. “We believe that this project is the perfect reminder for all com-
munity members that, although you may not experience violence within your own homes and families, we all play a part in keeping our community safe.” WTA chair Michael Rowland said domestic and family violence
had no place in society and that he was pleased to support the project. “It’s just not acceptable and we need to take a stand as a community,” he said. “It’s not something we want in Weipa or any place.”
THE Cape York community is invited to submit entries to feature in a 2021 calendar. The calendar is being produced by Cape York Natural Resource Management to celebrate the organisation’s 10-year anniversary. Cape York NRM chair Emma Jackson said the initiative was designed to showcase the close relationship between people and country on the Cape, and to help raise awareness of the environmental, social and cultural values of our region. “Cape York NRM has been working to create a sustainable and integrated region,” she said. “We believe the natural and cultural values and the community spirit of this place are second to none and we want to showcase this remarkable region through the creative outputs of its people.” Entries could be a photo of something on Cape York that is special to you, or you might like to submit a photo of an artwork you’ve created that symbolises the Cape, such as textile, drawing, painting or sculpture. Entries close on November 23. Louise Gavin is working with Cape York NRM to collate the artwork for the calendar. Email louisegavin@remarkablenrm.com. au to make a submission.

POLICE are urging Cape York travellers to take care as road conditions worsen at the back-end of the year. These photos depict an example of what happens when things go wrong. An 18-year-old woman was headed south on the PDR on October 18. She later reported to police that at around 2.30pm, she reportedly swerved to avoid an object on the road before rolling her car and ending up down a culvert. Fortunately, the driver avoided serious injury. The crash occurred in an area with no phone reception and with the closest

She was taken to a nearby roadhouse for treatment. “As we approach the tail end of a challenging year it may be tempting for many to plan one last Cape trip before the wet season starts,”
Acting Sergeant Danny Haberland said. “Cape York certainly has a lot to offer and remains one of the world’s top adventure destinations. “The sense of freedom in remote areas is hard to beat. “However remote travel is not without risk and when things go wrong it presents a challenge. Please drive with caution.”

Venues gearing up for Melbourne Cup festivities BOTH the Weipa Bowls Club and Albatross Bay Resort will open their doors at 8am on Melbourne Cup Day, but punters are urged to get their bets on early. The fields will be finalised on Saturday night and those wanting a flutter on the Tuesday race can get on from Sunday onwards. “It’ll get really busy, especially close to the race,” said Albatross Bay Resort publican Tim Broderick. “Don’t leave it until the last minute. Our staff will help as much as they can.” There’s a major function organised at the Alby on
Chantelle Benford is well prepared for Melbourne Cup day.
Cup day, with all proceeds going to CAPS. “That’ll be on the deck but inside the sports bar we’ll be doing specials and deals,” Mr Broderick said. There’s no official func-
tion at the Weipa Bowls Club, but that’s not stopping the fun, says restaurant manager Chantelle Benford. “The restaurant will be open and we’ll make it look really nice,” she said.
“We’ll be doing sweeps, prizes for best dressed and other bits and pieces.” Punters just wanting a beer and a bet will have their own area near the public bar, Ms Benford said. DON’T MISS OUT MAKE sure you get a copy of next Monday’s Cape York Weekly for a special Melbourne Cup liftout. We’ll have a form guide, sweep chart and all the information you need to back a winner in the big race. It will be a bumper edition, with all the action from the Weipa Fishing Classic, as well as the state election.
Tim Broderick is hosting a Cup function on the deck at the Alby.
SPORT BRIEFS McIvor strikes hot form CHRIS McIvor was again victorious at the Dawn Busters nine-hole golf competition in Weipa on Sunday morning. He had the measure of Terry Oberleuter, who was runner-up. John Fall was the Hoffmans recipient, while Grant Crossley was runner-up. The main group of Dawn Busters tees off at 6.30am on Sundays. All are welcome and all you need to do is tee off by 7am.

Keys Please wins for Roy WEIPA businessman Rob Roy enjoyed a feature race victory at Townsville on Saturday with two-year-old Keys Please. Backed from $6 into $3.50, the Ralph Baker-trained filly was an impressive winner of the Pallarenda Stakes. Adding the QTIS prizemoney for being bred in Queensland, the winning purse was $31,000.
Roy was unable to be at Cluden Park to see his filly win in what was her first race start. “It can be a little bit frustrating as you would love to be there (and) to support your trainer, as well,” he told the Cairns Post on Sunday. “You cannot get a better horseman than that man,” he said of Gordonvale’s Baker.
“They put so much hard work in, untold hours, that the public do not understand what goes into preparing a horse to get to the races.” Based on the quality of her win – it was several lengths faster than the colts and geldings race on the same program – the future appears to be bright for Keys Please.
“This one just seems like a natural race horse, she has a lovely temperament,” Roy said of the daughter of Statue of Liberty and Jacsaid. “Fingers crossed at this stage, she looks like a very nice proposition.” Racing moves to Cape York on November 7 with a six-race card at Cooktown.
WEIPA residents are being encouraged to dress up in spooky gear and head out to the Weipa Dirt Kart Club this Saturday night for Halloween. The club has a big race meeting planned for drivers and spectators. Gates open at 4pm and there will be novelty races, prizes for best costumes and trick or treating for the kids.
Hunter wins on countback JIM Hunter beat a field of 20 on Wednesday but only by the narrowest of margins. Hunter and Jim Taylor both shot 43 off the stick and had the same handicap, but it was Hunter who got the nod on a countback in the Wednesday Wackers competition. Stretch Noonan was nearest the pin on the 7th and no one found the green on the 9th. Bradmans went to Jess Stecko.
