CYNTHIA Lui is “no good thing” to win re-election at this month’s election, according to bookies. Eight candidates are confirmed to be in the race after nominations closed on Sunday. The incumbent Cook MP is still favourite to win the seat but Sportsbet thinks it will be close.

Ms Lui is listed at $2 ahead of LNP candidate Nipper Brown, who is considered a $3.50 chance. Katter’s Australian Party rookie candidate Tanika Parker is on the third line of betting at $4. Ms Lui, the incumbent Member for Cook, opened as a $1.60 chance but has been on the drift since markets opened. She was a $1.85 chance on Thursday and by the time the ballot draw was conducted on Sunday, was considered a $2 prospect. Across the state, Sportsbet has Labor at $1.85 to be sworn in again, while the LNP is $1.95.

NEWS IN BRIEF Weipa drug supplier jailed A CAIRNS man who sold drugs in Weipa has been jailed for more than nine years. The Cairns Post reported Zane Rene Cook trafficked 3.5kg of methamphetamine over four runs from Brisbane to Cairns between August and October 2017. The Townsville Supreme Court also heard Cook acquired one pound of cannabis for $2200 and on-sold the drug for $4400 in Townsville and up to $6400 in Weipa. Cook pleaded guilty to one count of trafficking in dangerous drugs and one count of possessing dangerous drugs. Justice David Jackson sentenced Cook to nine-and-a-half years jail. He will be required to serve half of the sentence before he can be released.

Western Cape Chamber of Commerce president Vance Wallin says a spaceport would help diversify Weipa’s economy and reduce reliance on mining.

BUILDING a spaceport near Weipa would help secure the town’s future, the president of the Western Cape Chamber of Commerce says. Vance Wallin said the concept of a spaceport aligned with the chamber’s strategic plan. “We need to secure the future of Weipa outside of mining,” he said. “That is something that has always been on the chamber’s radar and in our strategic plans. “Without having a committee meeting to discuss the spaceport idea I can’t endorse it, especially as there isn’t a proposal on the table, but the concept appears to be attractive.” Mr Wallin said Weipa’s future

was strong as it boasted a number of key assets. “We have a good airport, a deep water port, a strong history and a reliable tourism season,” he said. “The mines aren’t going to disappear anytime soon, but they won’t be here forever. “A spaceport would bring a lot of support jobs to the town and utilise some of the companies we have here already.” COMPANY REVEALED FOLLOWING the exclusive in Cape York Weekly, an Australian company has revealed its plans for the region. A site at Weipa is part of a proposal by CosmoVision Global Corporation, which hopes to secure approval to start building a “technology park” next year.

AAP reported the site will be used to launch rockets weighing more than 400 tonnes and powered by non-toxic fuel, according to corporation boss Ilya Osadchuk. “We can hopefully meet the mandatory requirements for obtaining our licence to set up and operate our spaceport and launch facility in Cape York,” Mr Osadchuk said a statement. The proposal is yet to get a green light from state or federal governments or Traditional Owners, or pass essential environmental requirements. Despite the many necessary approvals, the corporation said it has already secured “international launch vehicles” and has global investors lined up. The operation plans to launch satel-

It’s not the only space proposal on the cards for Queensland with the LNP revealing plans for a $15 million rocket launch pad at Abbot Point if victorious at the October 31 election. Gilmour Space Technologies would be the anchor tenant of the government-owned facility, and the firm already has contracts with customers who need to launch in an easterly direction. Last month, a 3.4-metre rocket became Australia’s first commercial launch to the edge of space, from South Australia. According to AAP, the federal government is investing $7 billion in growing Australia’s space capabilities over the next decade.

WORK has started on construction of a space at Weipa Hospital to house a new CT scanner. Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service chief executive Beverley Hamerton said an ideal location had been identified for the machine. “We are reconfiguring some under-utilised, non-clinical space conveniently situated near the emergency department to house the new scanner,” she said. “We expect the works to be completed and the CT scanner switched on and scanning patients by early 2021.” The project was funded by a $1.15 million partnership between Rio Tinto and Old

Mapoon Aboriginal Corporation and a $1.35 million contribution from the state government. “Our priority is the safety and wellbeing of our people and the communities in which we operate,” Rio Tinto Weipa acting general manager Dan Kelleher said. “We are proud to be able to continue our strong partnership with Old Mapoon Aboriginal Corporation and Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service to bring this service to Weipa and surrounding Western Cape communities. “We are excited to see this project commence which will provide locals access to advanced

health services without needing to leave their community.” Ms Hamerton said the Weipa CT scanner would be the health service’s first and marked a significant step forward for the region’s health services. “The new CT scanner means between 40 and 50 patients a month from Weipa and the wider Western Cape region will no longer need to travel out of the region for clinical investigation,’” she said. “With the scanner on site, our doctors and visiting specialists can perform more services here in Weipa. “This will allow the continued delivery of high-quality

health care within our region and providing faster access to potentially lifesaving scans for cancer, stroke and other conditions.” Ms Hamerton said the introduction of a CT scanning service at Weipa would help attract and retain suitably qualified staff that would be able to work to their full scope of practice, while also increasing the self-sufficiency of the Weipa Hospital. She said a full-time radiographer would be recruited to support the new service and there would also be opportunities for upskilling Indigenous staff to support the CT scanner and other services. Children warned to stay off train tracks WEIPA BOWLS CLUB GAMBLE RESPONSIBLY

PARENTS are being urged to have a conversation with their children about the dangers of walking or playing on the train tracks around Weipa. The call comes following a number of reports from Rio Tinto’s train operators about youths being spotted on the tracks.

Colin Vallance, manager of Rio Tinto Weipa’s northern operations, said it was simply not safe to be on or near the rail line. “During 2020, we have had multiple incidents where the public have been on or around the railway line whilst the train is operating,” he said.

“Some examples of this are children crossing the track at Six Tunnels while swimming in the wet season, people fishing off the bridge and railway line, while recently there was an individual sitting on the track. “The train travels the track 30 times a day at speeds up to

65km/h and can take 1km to stop. As you can imagine, any impact between the train and a person would not result well and be absolutely devastating for the families and community.” Mr Vallance urged parents to have the conversation about train safety with their children.

Teacher stabbing sparks changes A SAFETY audit will be conducted on all Cape York schools and staff housing after a Lockhart River teacher was attacked by a knifewielding man last week. Rachel Middleton, 25, suffered injuries to her face, stomach, arms and legs in the incident. Teachers around the Cape voiced their displeasure at the attack, calling for improved safety measures at the state-provided housing in communities. There was no fence at all

“She said she wanted to go back home to Lockhart River, but she has been told to take a break,” he said. “She’s just a lovely girl and she didn’t deserve this.” A sympathetic Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said in order to support remaining Lockhart State School staff, senior officials would be sent to the Cape. “I wish that teacher a speedy recovery. MEMBERS of the Weipa VMR travelled to Karumba last week for Saturday’s zone annual general meeting, where several key decisions were made. It was unanimously agreed that Volunteer Marine Rescue Queensland should employ a third training officer. They also agreed that the best location for the training officer, both physically and logistically, would be in the Far North. The northern region represents approximately one third of the VMR Queensland squadrons covering some of the more remote communities. Being able to deliver, individualise and contextualise the training to suit the needs of the squadron will maximise the outcome and better fulfil the requirements of the National Training Framework. The importance of localised training was highlighted during the recent Blue Water Review. The units also moved to nominate Peter Graham to run for president of the VMRAQ. Mr Graham has been the president of the Gulf Zone for 25 years and “has intimate knowledge of the training, developed extensive networks and operational requirements needed”.

Educator Liz Smith said items such as PVC offcuts, electric wire reels and other loose parts would be gladly accepted. “We’re also looking for furniture but there is some money in the budget to buy certain items,” Ms Smith said. Hands-on items will help the children learn problem solving skills. The kindy is about to get a new shed at the premises, funded by a gambling fund grant through the state government.

Teachers in awards mix THREE teachers from Western Cape College are in the mix to win awards at the Australian College of Educators’ Noreen Wilcox Awards for Excellence in Education. Sarah Tonon, Brittany Nolan and Siobhan Wilson will attend Rydges Esplanade Resort in Cairns on October 22 where the winners will be announced. The awards recognise the excellence of teachers in both the classroom and non-classroom settings.

Hands on in Aurukun A PARTNERSHIP between Rio Tinto Weipa and PCYC Aurukun proved fruitful for local kids over the school holidays. The mining company facilitated Hands on Trades, an educational program designed to inform and expose students to various trade roles within Rio Tinto. The program has the intent of achieving an increased representation of students entering into vocational pathways, such as traineeships and apprenticeships. Around 30 youths participated in practical activities facilitated by mechanic Joel Gillespie and apprentice Joshua Mills. The activities included deconstructing small engines, building sprinklers out of conduit and bends, and demonstrations of how to fix leaking taps. “Although some of the kids were relatively young, they displayed the ability to problem solve,” Mr Gillespie said. Problem solving skills are important in any given profession and it is a marketable skill to have. “It was pleasantly surprising to see this in children so young.”

Expect to see more sealing works in Cape York in the coming years as the federal government allocated funds for community access roads in the budget.

Community access roads given funding in budget

ACCESS roads to Cape York communities were allocated $38 million of funding in last week’s federal budget. Roads to communities such as Aurukun, Pormpuraaw and Kowanyama will get more sections sealed with bitumen under a partnership with the state government. Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch said it followed up the hundreds of millions of dollars the federal government had spent on sealing projects on the Peninsula Developmental Road. “There’s more bitumen than ever before on the PDR and while we still need to get more of that done, we also need to make sure those access roads into the communities are being looked after,” he said. The state government will contribute $9.5 million to the package, titled Cooktown to Weipa Corridor Upgrade – Cape York Community Access Roads. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk welcomed the support for Queensland projects her government had championed in the state’s economic recovery plan. “My government gets deals

done with Canberra,” she said last week. “We have a real infrastructure plan with funding locked in that delivers jobs and strong economic outcomes for Queenslanders. “We’ve successfully worked with the federal government to lock in more than $4.8 billion in new and accelerated joint funding for Queensland since last November. “Thousands of workers have jobs because we’ve created a strong pipeline of projects that are shovel ready.” TAX RELIEF COMING THE federal government will

deliver significant tax relief as part of its economic recovery plan. Mr Entsch said as part of the 2020-21 budget, the Morrison government would bring forward stage two of its personal income tax plan by two years. Those measures include:  The low income tax offset will increase from $445 to $700;  The top threshold of the 19 per cent tax bracket will increase from $37,000 to $45,000; and  The top threshold of the 32.5 per cent tax bracket will increase from $90,000 to $120,000. Mr Entsch said bringing forward stage two would see thousands of Far North Queensland taxpayers get a tax cut backdated to July 1, 2020. He said business would be supported with time‑limited tax incentives that provide immediate expensing and loss carryback. “This will generate economic activity and create jobs by lowering the cost of investment,” the MP said. “Personal income tax cuts announced in the last two budgets helped to put more money into

the pockets of hard‑working Australians and in the process strengthen our local economy to respond to COVID-19.” Mr Entsch said the government would also provide additional targeted support to lowand middle-income Far North Queenslanders. He said in 2020‑21, low-and middle-income earners will receive a one-off additional benefit of up to $1080 from the low and middle income tax offset. “The LMITO was to be removed with the commencement of stage two, but the one‑off additional benefit in 2020-21 will provide support to households and stimulus to the economy,” Mr Entsch said in a statement to the media. “Together, bringing forward stage two and providing the additional LMITO means thousands of Far North Queensland taxpayers will get a tax cut, with effect from July 1 this year, providing them with more money to spend on what matters to them. “As they spend their tax cuts this will help local businesses to keep their doors open and hire more staff.”

LNP makes Weipa project pledges KEEN to win support at the polling booths, the LNP has pledged support to two community projects in Weipa. Cook candidate Nipper Brown said he had managed to secure two $20,000 pledges in the lead up to the October 31 ballot. “We are hoping there is more to be announced, too,” he said. Mr Brown said an LNP government would fund $20,000 towards a new brochure for the Weipa Tourism Group. The funding will contribute directly to the marketing costs and printing production.

The new brochure will have particular emphasis on local fishing spots and natural attractions to drive local tourism and bring more adventure-seekers to Weipa. “We live in the most beautiful part of the world. It’s time the rest of Australia knows it,” the LNP candidate said. “It’s important that when we promote local tourism here in Weipa, we support local businesses in the process. “That’s why I’m excited to support this initiative and look forward to working with local marketers and printers.”

SHOWGROUND SUPPORT THE LNP will also commit $20,000 towards the construction of the new sporting complex at Weipa’s Showgrounds. The proposed construction will include a new running track, two mini soccer fields and a stage area. Mr Brown said it would benefit all members of the community. “The new multi-purpose sporting complex will bring the entire Weipa community together in one place, and offer a range of exciting opportunities for training, development and enjoyment of local sport,” he said.

Insurance solution a must: KAP

Pauline Hanson’s One Nation candidate for Cook Brettlyn Neal says we must learn to respect crocodiles and only remove those who pose a danger to the public.

Crocs deserve our respect, says candidate ONE Nation candidate Brettlyn Neal says Cape York residents must continue to live in harmony with crocodiles. “My personal view is that we humans have lived quite well alongside these prehistoric monsters for many years, and that can continue – but it doesn’t mean we can be carefree,” she said.

“In a nutshell, the answer to the croc issue is that we need to be constantly respectful and vigilant. “Stories of rogue crocs are sure to grab media headlines. “Crocs spotted far from their natural habitats or escapees from croc farms soon develop legendary stories that spread like bushfire.” The candidate for Cook said

she was expecting her opponents to prey on public fears and claim culling crocs was the answer. “Crocodiles must be seen as a valued asset for the north,” Ms Neal said. “We can make money from crocs as a tourist attraction, from the meat and leather, we can harvest their eggs if needed, and we

benefit socially and culturally from their presence in our environment. “They are an important apex predator that helps keep the ecosystem in check. “It’s our responsibility to maintain a sensible outlook. We need to maintain respect for these amazing reptiles, but remove the rogue crocs as needed.”

CAPE York residents would be relieved from having to insure their properties against natural disasters in a plan supported by Katter’s Australian Party. The plan, spearheaded by Queensland’s peak body for the strata sector, Strata Community Association, is in response to jumps of up to 300 per cent and more in residential insurance costs in North Queensland. It would see a national fund established to compensate people whose property is damaged or destroyed by natural disasters, also known as “acts of God”. KAP leader Robbie Katter said the state was staring down the barrel of total market failure with regards to the insurance industry, and people in North Queensland were the most impacted. Radio upgrade to improve safety By MATT NICHOLLS

BOATIES around the coast of Weipa will be safer on the water as a result of a radio tower installation at the VMR headquarters. With support of a $25,000 grant from Rio Tinto Weipa, the new radio tower is nearly ready to be switched on, VMR Weipa president Brendon Fay said last week. “At the moment we rely on mobile phones, satellite phones and short radio contact,” he said. “This is going to improve our communications and help respond to any incidents.” Rio Tinto Weipa’s superintendent of marine operations Michael Austin said it was an easy decision for the company to support the project under its Community Development Fund program. “A lot of our employees like to go fishing and this is going to improve safety on the water,” he said. “We are pleased to be able to support this not-for-profit community group with the project and we hope to see it up and running soon.” Rio Tinto Weipa is also supporting VMR volunteers get their hours up on the water in order to obtain necessary paperwork to conduct rescue operations. Mr Austin said with support from Smit Lamnalco, hours could be offered to assist those willing to put in the effort.

Cape patients losing patience with remote travel scheme QUEENSLAND Health’s patient travel scheme lacks efficiency and local knowledge, according to one Weipa resident. Following Cape York Weekly’s story about issues with the system, a number of patients came out of the woodwork to voice concerns. “I have been using the patient travel subsidy scheme for about five years as I have regular treat-

ments in Cairns,” one reader said. “Without any consultation with anyone, they brought in a new rule where you must apply for your airfare 10 working days before your appointment. “Now this is impossible for some people as they may be waiting on a list to see a specialist and not know whether they have an appointment until a short time before.

Almost without exception you can only find out whether you have it, or it’s got lost in the system, 24 hours before your flight. “The number of times I have my suitcase packed ready to go and still not had notification of my flight details is too many to count. “Almost without exception I

Volunteers help keep Weipa clean

A SMALL but dedicated group of volunteers helped clean up the area behind the Heritage Shopping Centre in Weipa on Sunday. Organised by the Weipa Town Authority, around a dozen people joined WTA members to collect trash that had been dumped or blown into the bushland. WTA chair Michael Rowland said although he would have liked more locals to help out, he was happy with those who showed up and did their bit. “Next year we might have to promote it a bit more,” he said. “Usually we like to do it in the cooler months but we were in the midst of dealing with COVID.” Mr Rowland also thanked the WTA staff members who gave up their Sunday morning to assist with setting up the site and hand out rubbish bags and equipment.

Road trip on a whim brings John back to Weipa after five decades By MATT NICHOLLS

JOHN Murphy was having a few beers with his neighbour Kim MacDonald last week when they decided to go on a road trip from Cairns to Weipa. Both had worked in the mining town before, but several decades apart. Neither had been back to visit since leaving. “We live on Lake Street in Cairns near the hospital and we were having a few beers and decided to come up,” Mr Murphy said. “That was four days ago,” he said from the Weipa Bowls Club on Friday. Mr Murphy was one of the original Comalco workers, arriving in Weipa as a young man in his early 20s in 1969. He stayed two years after working as a grader operator. “A lot has changed since then,” he said in his first trip back in 50 years. “You weren’t even allowed to drive to Cairns back then – no one had their own car in Weipa. “Even if you did want to drive, it would take a couple of days. It was just a bush track back then.” Mr Murphy said he didn’t have a lot of memories about his time in the Cape, but did manage to get his pilot’s licence while working here.

“The aero club from Cairns used to come up and train us,” he said. “I ended up working as a pilot for Ansett until 2001.” It would be a year that changed his life. Not only did he lose his job, but he would spend a chunk of it in hospital after being run over by a taxi in Cairns. “I remember waking up in hospital in Brisbane and the TV was on and there were planes crashing into the (twin) towers,” he recalled.

“I went out again and don’t have another memory until January the next year.” Mr Murphy said his legs were crushed in the accident, but his life was saved by a quick-thinking doctor who was on his way to the hospital when he came across the incident. “I’m lucky I can walk,” he said. And have a beer. “Back here in Weipa you could only have two beers after work at

the camp (in Rocky Point),” Mr Murphy recalled. “You could have more but you’d have to go down to the Stubby Hut at Evans Landing and that could be a pretty dangerous place.” For Mr MacDonald, who drove the corrugations in his Toyota RAV4, his memories of Weipa are more recent. He spent several years in the 2000s working as a contractor in the Western Cape.

In 2008, he successfully negotiated the Western Cape Regional Partnership Agreement between local, state and federal governments, Rio Tinto, 11 Indigenous Traditional Owner groups and other community organisations. “It’s definitely changed a lot, even in this shorter amount of time,” the former journalist said. “I can tell you one thing, I won’t ever be driving back here again. The road is appalling.”

TWO blocks of land in Weipa that failed to attract a bid at auction are actually proof that auctions work, real estate agent Deb Duffy says. Lots in Nanum and Golf Links had virtually no interest on the day, but both have since sold just a couple of weeks in the aftermath. “This is common practice in the real estate world,” Ms Duffy said. “Days on market is critical to any marketing campaign. “Auction is the preferred method to market any property that is new to the market. “It is a three-phase process where the property can be sold

prior to auction, under the hammer or after the date. “These two blocks went under contract nine days after auction date.” The Weipa Real Estate principal said other blocks in town had sat dormant because they didn’t follow her method. “As an example, 11 Transmission Street, Rocky Point is being sold by Private Treaty and has now been on the market for over 380 days,” Ms Duffy said. “The auctions didn’t get a lot of interest on the day, but everyone knew the blocks of land were for sale and we sold them quickly. “Auctions definitely work.”

The Lockhart River mayor was a founder of the earlier Cape Indigenous Mayors Alliance and has since played an integral role in the development of TCICA. He said he would get supported from Cr Sands, who previously

served as Kowanyama’s deputy chief executive officer. Mayors recognised the leadership of outgoing chair Vonda Malone in steering TCICA to the strong position it is in today. Cr Malone reflected on the past year and spoke about the growing awareness of the work of TCICA and the effective partnerships that have been built with state and federal government ministers.

Milestone up for Cape York NRM By EMMA JACKSON Cape York NRM chair

I AM so proud to be writing this as chair of Cape York NRM, as we celebrate our 10-year anniversary, but also as a member of the broader Cape York community who is passionate about our people, landscape and the interconnection we have. Cape York is not the region it was 10 years ago. We have experienced growth, increased visitors and unpredictable climatic changes, plus cyclones, drought, flooding and fires. Land management and ownership has changed to varying scales and road development has led to efficiencies for locals, on a personal and business level. Cape York NRM has played a key role with many people across community, industry, partnering organisations, government and land trusts to work collaboratively in order to achieve shared goals. Our values stem from a consultation and engagement process that Cape York Sustainable Futures led across Cape York, over a decade ago where a steering committee, which was largely selected by locals, carried out a thorough process so that our very own backyard condition could be looked after by our own people. Every region across Australia has an organisation overseeing the investment into natural resource management. We were the final and 54th, region to develop our own organisation and it was designed around the needs, requests and considerations of our whole regional community. I am honoured to have initially sat on that steering committee, but equally humbled to sit on the board as a director and chairperson for more than half of our existence. In the first year of operations,

WHAT an adventure it was for Bob Frazer when he stepped into the role as Cape York NRM’s inaugural chief executive officer, and sole employee, in 2010. Mr Frazer’s first couple of years in the job saw him traversing the Cape to meet with as many people and community members as possible. Engaging with people to determine what it was that they needed to live and work effectively on the land they managed. People were excited to learn the region finally had its own dedicated natural resource management body, funded by both state and federal government, designed to help people work together to care for the natural environment and to promote the sustainable use of Cape York’s resources. In fact, this purpose became the organisation’s official mission statement. After 130,000km of travel across the Cape over two years, it became apparent we welcomed Joseph Elu as our inaugural chair to lead, alongside Bob Frazer as our CEO. I’d like to acknowledge the effort from both of them into our increasing successes, but also the core role they played in initiating the culture of the organisation. Because of their leadership, the culture is one of care, kindness, inclusivity, quality and transparency. We have grown in partnerships, employment, reputation, and investment into the land and water. Our understanding of this region, the challenges we face and the opportunities that lie ahead is expanding, but our relationships with all of our stakeholders including the varying land managers, community and partners is not only contributing to our on-ground success, but also needs.

Happy Days rises to the SPORT IN BRIEF challenge in rough seas McIntosh by a margin

CONDITIONS were far from ideal for the long weekend’s Hastings Deering Weipa Billfish Tournament, but that didn’t stop the die-hard locals and visitors. Over the three days, 20 billfish were tagged by anglers. As the wind and rough seas eased, the fishing improved. Just one sailfish was tagged on the Saturday. Nine sailfish were tagged on both Sunday and Monday, while a 10th gamefish was added on the final day when Emmi Roberts raised the only marlin of the tournament. The champion team was Happy Days, comprising Darryl and

Simone French, Britt Baumann and Tege Witcher. At the presentation night, club president Gaven Roberts thanked participants and sponsors for supporting the event in what had been an uncertain year. DESLEY McIntosh was a comfortable winner of Wednesday Wackers golf, beating her rivals by four strokes. Her 47 off the stick was enough to beat an unlucky Grant Crossley, who drove well all afternoon to shoot 42. Under the handicap system, though, it was McIntosh who held a big margin. Captain’s crew claims challenge STEVE Jensen’s outfit proved too slick for Michele Elms’ team in the Flick-sponsored President vs Captain Challenge on the weekend. Thirty-six golfers were split into two teams for the three formats over two days. The captain’s team, led by course superintendent Jensen, led throughout the weekend to win 18½ to 17½ in a thriller. On Saturday, two formats were played, a four-ball over nine holes and a foursomes over the next nine. On Sunday, it was head-tohead over 18 holes in matchplay, similar to the President’s Cup format.
