WEIPA COURTED FOR SPACEPORT SITE

One small step for man, one giant leap for Cape York THE future of Weipa could be in the space industry as Cape York continues to appear on the radar of science companies looking to capitalise on the booming market. At least one organisation has discussed the idea with Weipa Town Authority to gauge community and commercial interest. Cape York has a complicated history with the space industry. A site north of Lockhart River at Temple Bay was proposed by the state government in the 1980s, only for Traditional Owners to reject the idea. Local authorities have already indicated that Traditional Owner support would be required for any spaceport project to go ahead in Weipa or elsewhere in the Cape. However, the business community wants to see it happen to grow local industry.  Full report – Pages 8 and 9
