One small step for man, one giant leap for Cape York THE future of Weipa could be in the space industry as Cape York continues to appear on the radar of science companies looking to capitalise on the booming market.

At least one organisation has discussed the idea with Weipa Town Authority to gauge community and commercial interest.

Cape York has a complicated history with the space industry.

A site north of Lockhart River at Temple Bay was proposed by the state government in the 1980s, only for Traditional Owners to reject the idea.

Local authorities have already indicated that Traditional Owner support would be required for any spaceport project to go ahead in Weipa or elsewhere in the Cape.

However, the business community wants to see it happen to grow local industry.  Full report – Pages 8 and 9

Widower Aaron Tamwoy will raise their three children after Danielle passed away a day after giving birth in the Townsville Hospital.

Danielle, affectionately known as Danga, was a popular dance teacher at Northern Peninsula Area State College.

NPA mayor Patricia Yusia said Danielle was well-liked among the communities.

“Danga was an inspirational young woman who

was a role model to the youth, especially young girls, as a dance teacher at the high school,” she said.

“She would teach the young people and motivate them to participate in sport and community events which showcased her inspiration with the young children and youth.

“Danga really was an inspiration. A valuable and skilled young woman who the community will miss.”

Leanne Fox, principal of the college, said Danielle’s passing had left a hole in the hearts of staff members.

“She was (also) the ultimate role model for students – especially for young Indigenous girls,” she said.

Townsville Hospital and Health Service chief executive, Kieran Keyes, said the unexpected death of a patient at the hospital had been referred to the state coroner.

“This is a very tragic situation for all involved and our deepest sympathies are with the family,” he said.

“We’ve been working closely with the family to ensure they are supported and given the facts about what occurred.”

Police vow to start fining quad bikers around town WEIPA’s wild west style quad bike riding days are over as police vow to crack down on those doing the wrong thing.

Police are seeing an increasing number of quad bikes and buggies being driven on local roads and green belts around town.

Police have been called to the Albatross Hotel twice recently in response to local residents riding their quad bikes and buggies to the drive-thru.

When intercepted by police, the majority of quad bike riders are breaking the law in some capacity. Most riders fail to wear helmets, have small children in their lap or are often under the influence of alcohol.

“We understand that quad bikes and buggies are fun and that they may appear to be a convenient choice for transport around town on a Friday or Saturday night, but often this option will end up costing you more than a taxi,” Senior Constable Emma Wallace said.

“The fine for not wearing a helmet on a quad bike will now cost you $400 and three demerit points.

ticket for not wearing a helmet in that same 12-month period, double demerit points will apply.”

This year, 16 people have lost their lives in quad bike-related accidents in Australia. This is double the amount compared to last year. Ten of these fatalities were the result of a rollover and in the majority of cases, the rider was not wearing a helmet.

charge Tim West said serious injuries could occur when quad bike riders and passengers were involved in accidents.

“Injuries can range from simple musculoskeletal injuries to serious and life-threatening injuries, such as head injuries that can result in death,” he said.

Queensland law makes it an offence to carry a child under the age of 8 on a quad bike.

Quad bike riders are unable to utilise Queensland roads or road-related areas unless the quad bike is subject to the conditional registration scheme.

New quad bike laws are due to come into force on Sunday, October 11.

It will require all quad bikes to carry a safety sticker warning about the degree of slope at which the vehicle will overturn.

Patient travel system in BOWLIES need of ‘major overhaul’ WEIPA

PATIENTS requiring travel in and out of Weipa have slammed the Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service for its lack of efficiency.

Last week, a Weipa couple was left stranded in Cairns when a Qantas flight schedule change wasn’t passed on to them.

Cape York Weekly has also been told of patients being told of their flight bookings on the same day of travel – or the day before – despite having appointments booked weeks in advance.

“The whole system is inefficient and needs a major overhaul,” said one patient, who asked not to be named.

“It’s great that these flights are subsidised but we have jobs and need to make other arrangements once we get to Cairns.

“You can’t book accommodation until you know your flights.”

On Monday of last week, two Weipa people turned up at Cairns Airport, only to discover their flight had been shifted forward by two hours.

There was no other flight until the next day.

“We had to travel back into the city, get accommodation and missed a day’s work in Weipa as a result,” one patient said.

“Qantas said they informed Patient Travel of the change, but that information wasn’t passed onto us.”

Queensland Health said it would pay $60 towards the extra night of accommodation, which wasn’t half of the cost, but won’t pay for taxi charges or meals incurred by its error.

“The problem is not in Weipa, we get great support from the Patient Travel staff member here,” a patient said.

“The problem is in Cairns.

They seem to be understaffed.”

Torres and Cape executive director of asset management Dean Davidson offered no apology to affected patients.

“TCHHS operates an extensive and efficient year-round patient travel system across Cape York, the Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula Area,” he said in a statement.

“Each year, the health service manages more than 17,000 movements of patients and carers both within our region and to external destinations such as Cairns.

“Our staff pride themselves on delivering a high-quality travel service, often at short notice and often under challenging circumstances.

“We regret if any of our clients have found the service not to their satisfaction.”

Mr Davidson said TCHHS endevoured to make all travel arrangements in as timely a manner as possible.

“Although patients may be advised of their appointments some weeks in advance, the details of these appointments may not be received by our travel staff so they can make travel arrangements until closer to the date of the appointment,” he said.

“We are also reliant upon receiving timely advance notice of schedule or flight changes from airline operators. This is not always possible when changes are made at short notice.

“Where supplied, patient contact details are provided to airline operators to enable direct contact should schedule changes occur outside of office hours.”

The TCHHS travel office provides an after-hours service between 5pm and 9pm on weekdays and between 8am and 9pm on weekends and public holidays

to assist referred patients with any travel issues.

“Where patients incur additional costs as a result of lastminute changes to their travel arrangements, they are eligible to apply for reimbursement through the Queensland Patient Travel Subsidy Scheme and should lodge an application to do so,” Mr Davidson said.

“It should be noted the Patient Travel Subsidy Scheme is designed to assist with travel and accommodation costs only.

“It is not intended to cover all costs associated with accessing specialist health services.

“The Torres and Cape HHS continually reviews all its services, including travel, to ensure they are meeting current expectations and to plan for future service needs.”

Katter calls for market gardens to improve community wellbeing

ALLOWING Indigenous people to own their home and reintroducing market gardens in communities would immediately improve the health and wellbeing of our First Nations people, Bob Katter says.

Speaking after a tour of the Torres Strait with candidate for Cook Tanika Parker, Mr Katter urged the state and federal governments to take a leaf from the Torres Strait Shire Council’s book on market gardens after touring the gardens on Thursday Island.

“I have been overwhelmed with the amount of people who have come up to me and thanked me for the ‘Katter leases’ from when I was a minister,” the veteran MP said.

“It was a program that worked and we need to get home ownership back in the communities in the Torres Strait and Cape York.”

Home ownership has been a sore point for Cape York mayors over the past decade, who have been pushing for more opportunities for Aboriginal people to be able to own a home in their own community.

“It just makes sense to me and a lot of people,” Mr Katter said.

“Why does the government want to own all of these houses?

“There needs to be more done to improve the wellbeing of our First Australians.”

Mr Katter was a witness in the inquiry into food prices in remote Indigenous communities and told the panel that market gardens were vital, that it can be done and is being done, successfully in the Torres Strait, and questioned why the mainland couldn’t just follow suit.

“Vonda Malone, the mayor of the Torres Shire Council, has been heavily involved in developing market gardens as she realises the absolutely necessity of acquiring fruit and vegetables at an affordable price,” he said.

“Each family looks after their own box and if they can do this with the very limited resources that her council has, why can’t the

federal government do this – they promised they would do it nearly two years ago.”

Mr Katter said 450 people were dying each year from malnutrition related diseases which can be attributed to the lack of fresh food available in remote communities.

“They aren’t dying in these numbers anywhere else in Australia,” he said.

“In a market garden you get bananas, paw paws, mangoes, potatoes, sweet potatoes, taro, pumpkin, lettuce – some of these come off quickly while with others, the fruit may take a bit longer but the trees will be there forever.

“Here on Thursday Island you can see it with your own eyes that the people are doing it with the most limited resources.”

Katter’s Australia Party candidate for Cook Tanika Parker said it would be a priority for her upon election to get the market garden initiatives set up across north Queensland.

“This is a great example of the people being under resourced and understaffed but they’re still kicking on and getting the job done,” she said.

“They have the solution and it shows the lack of support that the government has provided that they got stuck in and did it themselves.

“Not only does it help people get their head around growing produce of their own, but the gardens help eradicate malnutrition, diabetes and other chronic diseases that are preventable due to the lack of food.

“When I’m elected I will be focused on getting these gardens established across the entire electorate of Cook with state funding.”

Normalise Weipa: TCICA outlines state priorities

NORMALISING Weipa as a standalone council is a major priority for one of Cape York’s most powerful organisations.

Ahead of the state election, the Torres and Cape Indigenous Councils Alliance put together a list of priorities for the region.

Normalising Weipa was voted as a major issue that needed to be supported by the candidates.

Keeping the Local Fare Scheme in place was also a major issue for the councils.

“Weipa is integral to the entire Cape, Torres and Gulf region and is a key economic driver for the whole of Far North Queensland, the state and the Australian economy,” TCICA said.

“The Queensland government must commit to a transition plan for Weipa to become a normal local government so that the Weipa community is no longer disadvantaged by its ineligibility for government-funded infrastructure programs and its reliance on Rio Tinto to provide infrastructure for a town that benefits many other industries.

“The community is also an important service and employ-

ment hub for the Western Cape communities of Mapoon, Napranum and Aurukun.

“Weipa Town Authority’s involvement in TCICA is a great demonstration of the integral part it plays in the region and the willingness of Weipa to help grow strong and resilient communities right across Cape York.

“However, it is clear that the historical governance arrangements of Weipa are no longer fit for purpose, particularly as Rio Tinto focuses its attention away from Weipa and south to Amrun.

“Whilst mining will remain a key economic driver for many years, industries like construc-

tion, fishing, agriculture, tourism, and health services are also drivers, reflecting the move away from mining towards a more diversified economy.”

TCICA PRIORITIES  Continue to deliver on the $1.08 billion Aboriginal and Torres Strait Housing Action Plan and progress planning for the delivery of new housing in remote communities.  Review the model of health service delivery to identify ways to improve health services across the Cape, Torres and Gulf region and close the gap in life expectancy between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.  More support for local businesses in state government procurement to help drive jobs growth post COVID-19 and ensure the capabilities of local businesses are not overlooked.  Embed local business support services in communities to help build strong local capacity and provide new training and employment opportunities.  Transition Weipa to a normal local government so the community has the same rights as any other community in Queensland to determine its own future.

 Funding to implement the Queensland Indigenous Waste Strategy to ensure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander councils can address the waste and recycling issues they face.  Work towards transitioning the Cape, Torres and Gulf to clean energy by supporting the decarbonisation of more communities and committing to a long-term clean energy transition plan.  Guarantee the continuation of the Local Fare Scheme to ensure a reasonable and affordable standard of access to Cairns continues to exist for remote communities.  Continue to work with us in the co-design of programs and policies in recognition of the role elected local governments play in representing their communities.  Increase state government financial aid to Indigenous local governments so we can continue to deliver essential services and meet the standard of service delivery expected.

WEIPA Town Authority is encouraging local residents to get involved in the annual town clean-up this Sunday.

Volunteers can meet behind the Heritage Shopping Centre at 8am for the event, which will run for three hours.

Rubbish bags, gloves, water and sunscreen will be provided on the day.

House destroyed by fire RESIDENTS on the outskirts of Cooktown had to be evacuated on Saturday after fire ravaged the nearby bushland.

Cook Shire mayor Peter Scott said one house was destroyed on Ironwood Avenue.

On Sunday, QFES was backburning areas in a bid to contain the fire and the advice warning had been lowered to watch, rather than evacuate.

Changes to NAIF funding KEY changes to the Northern Australia Infrastructure Fund criteria are likely to bring good news for Cape York.

Under the reforms, smaller projects will be allowed to partner with local financiers to access loans.

The scope of accepted projects will also be widened and rules about what money can be used for will be loosened.

No longer limited to physical construction, changes now mean projects that involve buying or leasing equipment, training and expanding existing business operations can be considered for NAIF loans.

Photography competition LAKELAND is holding its photography competition on October 17 and entries close soon.

There are $2500 worth of prizes at the exhibition, held at the Lakeland Town Hall.

Organisers said there would be live music and a barbecue for anyone who attended the annual event and encouraged keen photographers to start sending in their snaps to beat the October 12 deadline.

Volunteers make event a success DOZENS of volunteers who gave up their long weekend have been praised by organisers of Conquer the Corrugations.

More than 150 people took to the Peninsula Developmental Road on Saturday and Sunday for the 42km walk between Coen and Archer River Roadhouse.

Founder Emma Jackson said the event was only a success because of the dedicated volunteer army who kept walkers fed, washed and smiling throughout.

“We’ve never had a problem getting people to help out and that’s what is so great about Cape York,” Ms Jackson said.

“We need people to set up camp, hand out morning and afternoon tea, cook barbecues, drive buses, transport toilets, administer first aid and many other things.

“This is not a fundraiser walk, it’s about mental health. It’s about getting outside, out of reception and doing something a bit hard and having a conversation.

“The great thing about Conquer is that everyone embraces it.”

Ms Jackson also thanked the businesses who made donations to the event, with “massive support” coming from the Weipa business community.

Rio Tinto Weipa employees were given a mental health education session at their E-Day last week as a result of a partnership between the mining company and the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

Rio Tinto joins forces with RFDS for staff training EVERY Rio Tinto Weipa worker will be given free mental health education as part of a partnership between the mining company and Royal Flying Doctor Service.

Both organisations said that mental health education was important for those living and working in remote areas.

The two-hour sessions are part of Rio Tinto’s Education Days at the Weipa Sports Surge Shelter.

RFDS mental health expert Jos Middleton said initial feedback had been encouraging.

participation. In different circumstances, people may feel uncomfortable contributing as part of a large group,” she said.

“The software also allows us to receive feedback which has been very positive, highlighting the importance of the training.

“It’s been great to see so many Rio Tinto employees engaged in the sessions.”

Ms Middleton said the training represented the realisation of a personal career goal, saying the idea of running education sessions with Rio Tinto came about during a Conquer the Corrugations walk three years ago.

“I have delivered mental health services in Cape York for around four years and have witnessed the

impact of mental health problems if left untreated,” she said.

“Even one suicide is one too many. There are steps that we can take to reduce the incidence of suicide and better inform people as to the help available.

“I can’t express how satisfying it is to be provided with the opportunity to present to Rio Tinto employees about how to nourish their mental health as well as what they can do to address problems associated with poor mental health.”

Rio Tinto Weipa acting general Manager Dan Kelleher said: “Having the RFDS deliver their mental

health presentation at our E-Days has provided great benefit to our employees here in Weipa.

“These are unique and challenging times and there is no greater opportunity than now to learn more about mental health, including better ways to communicate and support each other when we need someone to talk to or suspect that someone near us needs help.”

In May, the RFDS and Rio Tinto formed a partnership to help improve healthcare services across regional Queensland.

Rio Tinto pledged $1.25 million over five years as part of the deal.

GAINING the support of Traditional Owners in Cape York is the only way to progress a spaceport in the region, Weipa Town Authority chairman Michael Rowland says.

Mr Rowland said conversations with space organisations had revolved around Traditional Owner support.

“We have told them that we are interested, but they can’t do it without the backing of the TOs,” he told Cape York Weekly.

“It will be up to them to engage in those conversations.”

Thirty years ago, a spaceport in Cape York was a done deal until the Traditional Owners made their voice heard.

Under the leadership of Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen, the Queensland government backed a proposal for a Cape York spaceport at Temple Bay, north of Lockhart River.

If the proposal was successful, the spaceport would have been the first commercial space facility in the world.

Two rival groups developed proposals for the state government.

The Australian Spaceport Group was backed by Comalco and favoured a site close to Weipa.

It withdrew from the race after

a year and the Cape York Space Agency was chosen to act as the coordinator for the development of the project.

This group was formed as a consortium of companies including Mayne Nickless, Boral, the Commonwealth Bank, Price Waterhouse, TNT, Brambles and the Shimuzu Corporation.

By the early 90s, the spaceport was on the verge of construction, with surveyors and bulldozers clearing paths through the bush.

However, plans were eventually abandoned in 1992 when investor support collapsed after a High Court challenge by Traditional Owners, which resulted in the federal government imposing higher hurdles on environmental impact and Indigenous consent.

Three years ago, the land around Temple Bay was handed back to Traditional Owners in an emotional ceremony.

Wuthathi Traditional Owner Chrissy Warren, who helped negotiate the handover, said the families were “overwhelmed” and it was “amazing that those that stood up to oppose the space station are the ones that put us in this position”.

“That’s why I think it’s really special that country is exactly the way it is now,” she said in 2017.

Rocket Lab in New Zealand has successfully managed to create a low-impact spaceport with the backing of the local community.

VETERAN politician Bob Katter was a member of Sir Joh BjelkePetersen’s ministry when the Cape York Spaceport idea was first mooted in the 1980s.

The now federal MP said that the controversial Premier was ahead of his time in regards to the spaceport project.

“I thought Joh had lost his marbles,” Mr Katter told Cape York Weekly on Friday.

“But I did some research on it and he was ahead of the game.

“There wasn’t a commercial space industry at the time and this would have been the first private project in the world.”

The Kennedy MP said he would not advocate for the spaceport at Weipa, but would support the idea if the locals backed it.

“My priority is to get the economy built up here,” Mr Katter said from the Torres Strait.

“That’s the most important thing for Cape York and the Torres Strait.”

Mr Katter said there was merit in building a spaceport in Weipa due to its location, but stressed that it should not be built at taxpayer expense.

“It would need to be privately funded and have the support of the locals,” he said.

EMBRACING a spaceport near Weipa is a no-brainer, says Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch, who says the Cape York community must look at future proofing itself from the mining industry.

“I think if you’re looking at anywhere in our region it fits the bill,” he said last week.

“We need to be looking at what we can do post-Rio Tinto. We know that their future is south of the Embley River and north of the Andoom mine.

“It’s critical the town survives and thrives. There will always be that potential for tourism, but Weipa needs industry.”

Weipa Town Authority chairman Michael Rowland agreed with the federal MP. “The long-term future of Weipa is going to be away from mining,” he said.

“We have had some companies show interest in Weipa as a site because of our location.

“These are very early discussions but I think they are worth considering.

“There is going to have to be broad community consultation before anything eventuates.”

Those thoughts were echoed by rocket maker Blake Nikolic, the CEO of Black Sky Aerospace.

“It’s probably never going to happen,’’ he said of the Abbot Point proposal.

A much better location, he said, would be Cape York, the CourierMail reported last week.

Mr Entsch said a spaceport would complement Rio Tinto’s mining operations.

“It would be good to capitalise on the Rio Tinto legacy, which has

brought technical expertise to the remote community,” he said.

“A spaceport doesn’t actually have a lot of infrastructure but it brings support industries.

“Weipa makes a lot of sense because of its history, location and proximity to the equator.”

Mr Rowland said locals who are concerned about the idea should understand that the modern rocket industry was much different to what they might realise.

“They call them lunchbox satellites these days – the old ones used to be the size of a bus,” he said.

“The WTA isn’t making any kind of commitment but we are keen to listen and learn more.”

Mr Entsch said satellites were the lifeblood of Australia in the modern age.

“So many aspects of our life involve satellite technology,” he said.

“We are not talking about sending rockets to the moon, we are talking about devices that help our everyday industries in Australia.

“Our dependence on geodata and satellite technology has grown massively.”

Queensland’s space sector supports more than 2000 jobs and generates $760m for businesses across the state, according to state research.

The LNP last month made a $15 million commitment to build a launch facility near Abbot Point.

“They should be building it at Weipa, which is away from the Great Barrier Reef and is closer to the equator,” Mr Entsch said.

ROCKET expert Allan Paull says Weipa would be the perfect location for a spaceport if you wanted to build one in North Queensland.

Dr Paull, from the School of Mechanical and Mining Engineering at the University of Queensland, said that Weipa ticked all the boxes.

“It’s close to the equator, it has a well established harbour and it isn’t on the Great Barrier Reef,” he said, taking a jab at the proposed Abbot Point site in the process.

“It isn’t that expensive to build a launch site, it usually comes down to whether a government wants it to happen.”

Dr Paull said he had explored Weipa as a potential site when he was working directly in the rocket industry.

“We educate a lot of kids here and they end up overseas because we don’t have the jobs here to keep them,” he said.

“We need a spaceport in northern Australia.”

Dr Paull said there was no real reason for local residents to be concerned about a rocket launch site to be built near Weipa.

“It’s not like you’re launching rockets every day,” he said.

“Rocket Lab in New Zealand manage about one a month and the local impact is pretty low.”

As for rocket failure, that’s a different story.

“The probability of failure is actually pretty high – about 1 in 20,” Dr Paull said.

“That can be problematic, which is why you don’t want a site that’s near the Great Barrier Reef.

“But the probability of a human getting hit is extremely low.

“We did the maths and you’d have to be very unlucky.

“A site near Weipa would be ideal because there’s not a big population nearby.”

Dr Paull also said Australia’s space industry was well poised to take off in the next 20 years.

Teacher a great catch for school

WISE words from an aunt have turned out to be a blessing for both Brittany Nolan and the Weipa community.

After graduating four years ago, the school teacher was weighing up whether to stay in the south-east corner or make a move to a remote area, which would give her greater job security.

“My aunt said ‘go remote, you won’t regret it,” Ms Nolan said last week while on school holidays.

“She was right.”

Since arriving in Weipa for the start of the 2017 school year, the much-loved teacher has become an asset for Western Cape College.

Ms Nolan has become a sports coordinator and has been able to shape the school’s health and physical edicuation curriculum.

“I wouldn’t have been able to get any of these opportunities if I stayed down on the Sunshine Coast,” she said.

“I’ve been really blessed to have the support of the senior staff at Western Cape College, who have given me so many personal development opportunities.”

AWARD FINALIST Ms Nolan has been shortlisted for the Queensland College of Teachers – TeachX Awards.

The school nominated three staff members and it was the sports coordinator who made it through to the final stages.

When she’s not in the classroom or out on the sports field, Brittany Nolan loves getting outdoors in Cape York. She recently caught this Spanish mackerel.

Western Cape College associate principal Dan Tonon said she would be a worthy winner.

“Brittany’s passion to impart knowledge using highly engaging learning experiences has fostered successful student outcomes,” he said in the nomination.

“Her leadership of the school’s sporting events over the past two years has been exemplary, support-

ing the school priority of ‘many communities, one college’. She goes above and beyond to grow herself professionally by taking risks and grasping opportunities.”

This year, Ms Nolan has led the establishment of Teacher Top Tips at Western Cape College, providing weekly strategies and best practice tips for staff.

She is also currently working

with the Far North Queensland region’s Centre for Learning and Wellbeing to develop a capability development framework for college staff.

“In her classes, Brittany creates a safe, respectful and disciplined learning environment where students have opportunities to engage in quality learning experiences,” Mr Tonon said.

“She invests in her students to establish positive and trusting relationships.

“Brittany also supports students from disadvantaged backgrounds to attend regional events and competitions, sourcing funding and sponsorship for them.

“She has an upbeat energy, great smile and goes about her duties with enthusiasm.”

School holidays give students a chance to work GAINING work experience while at boarding school can be a challenge, so Cape York councils do their best to accommodate returning students during the holidays.

Aurukun Year 12 student Sherlana Wolmby, who attends Stuartholme School in Brisbane, spent the school holidays doing work experience at the Chivaree Centre.

Sherlana was part of Aurukun Shire Council’s School Work Placement Program for boarding students seeking job opportunities with the council.

The students are paid while they gain exposure to council workplaces and experiences, giving them an insight into the varied programs and services the council provides.

“We wish Sherlana success with her studies when she returns to Brisbane,” Aurukun Shire Council CEO Bernie McCarthy said.

“We look forward to engaging more local students when they return in November for the long holiday break.”

A similar program has been a success in Lockhart River and other Indigenous communities in Cape York, Mr McCarthy said.

Queensland Country converted from a credit union to a bank at the beginning of the year and Weipa was the last port of call for the new signage to be erected.

Lachlan Marshall from Grey and Grey in Brisbane, has travelled all across the state to install signage at the Queensland Country Bank branches.

He said Weipa was the most remote location, and hottest, ahead of Mount Isa. Weipa branch manager Lauren Haimes said in a difficult year with COVID-19 restrictions, the local QCB had performed strongly.

“The Weipa community has been fantastic and respectful of our COVID plan,” she said.

“Interest rates are low and there is a lot of people getting into the property market.

“It’s a good time to be a member of Queensland Country.

“We are about to open a branch in Rockhampton soon.”

Ms Haimes said the company’s decision to sponsor the new stadium in Townsville had given it a strong reputation.

“I think a lot more people know that we are around and that we are a bank,” she said.

Weipa’s Queensland Country Bank team – Tahlia Cos, Nicole Pritchard, Madeleine Fulton, Lauren Haimes, Leah Gunning and Heather Seaborn.

“Our members wouldn’t have noticed much difference since changing from a credit union to a bank, but it has helped our profile.”

Re-branding the bank took more time than expected due to travel restrictions, but was worth the wait, the all-female staff said on Friday.

“We are still looking for two staff members to join the team as well,” Ms Haimes said.

“It’s a great opportunity in a regional community.”

THREE not-for-profits in Weipa have received almost $100,000 for projects for their users.

Pebbles Playgroup, Weipa BMX Club and the Weipa Running Festival were successful applicants in the latest round of the state government’s Gambling Community Benefit Fund (GCBF).

Pebbles receives $27,100 to upgrade the facility and purchase equipment, while the BMX club will get $35,000 to construct a starting area roof at the track.

Rose Robins from the Weipa Running Festival said their $35,000 would go towards building a shed at the Weipa Showgrounds at Andoom Oval.

“At the moment we’ve got bits and pieces in a trailer and at a few different houses,” she said.

“It’ll be great to have one place to store things. It will be a shared facility with other users.”

The Weipa Running Festival managed to think outside the square in 2020 and have a “best ever” year, despite COVID restrictions on events.

“We made it a virtual event so that runners would track their run,” Ms Robins said.

“We still set up a stage and finish line for local runners on weekends but we had a heap register from outside of Weipa.”

Our trains here in Weipa can travel up to 65 km/h and this takes the train a long time to stop - nearly the distance of eight football fields.

Footy carnivals cancelled

THERE will be no senior rugby league in Cape York in 2020 as all competitions, including carnivals, have been called off due to COVID-19.

Queensland Rugby League officer Robbie Moore said it was a tough decision to make, but said that other parts of the state had also gone without footy.

A modified version of the Cairns District Rugby League competition was able to be

staged this year, with the Northern Pride entering two teams.

Moore said he hoped that rugby league would return to Cape York and the Torres Strait in 2021 but said players and fans should expect big changes.

“There is going to be a lot of changes coming from the NRL and QRL and that will be about finding efficiencies,” he said.

“We are not going to be able to fly up referees and sports trainers like we have in the past.

“The communities are going

to have to take ownership and source referees, coaches and trainers locally.”

Moore said QRL would run as many training courses as possible in communities to get local rugby league participants up to speed with their certificates.

“We also want to introduce league tag and junior games in some of these places so one community can travel to another and they play a few games against each other in men’s, women’s and juniors,” he said.

Hopes that teams from Cape York could travel to places such as Gordonvale and Townsville for carnivals were recently quashed.

“The QRL put out a directive to halt all of those carnivals this year,” Moore said.

“It was a hard decision but we wanted to be as safe as possible.

“I’m confident that players and referees will return next year as keen as ever after a year off. It’s been hard on the game but we’ll be back.”

Fishing charter operators get flexible in a tough year WEIPA’S tourism industry had to think on its feet in 2020 to deal with the impacts of COVID-19.

Fishing charter operators were left reeling when border closures and biosecurity restrictions forced them to cancel most of their early season bookings.

When the Cape was eventually opened for business, skippers like Darren Redman from DJ’s

XStream Fishing Charters had to get creative.

“Our bread and butter is those packages where people fly in for a week of fishing,” he said.

“We lost a fair chunk of those, so we had to try and get an income through day trips and half-day trips from people travelling through the caravan park.”

Darren, who works seasonally

in Weipa, said it had been a tough period for the business.

“We are based out of Bermagui on the southern NSW coast and our season was ruined by the bushfires last summer,” he said.

“Obviously a lot of people did it tougher than us because they lost their homes and livelihoods, so we are lucky to have some work.”

Darren and wife Jan will this

week hit the road and return to NSW and hope that 2021 proves to be fruitful for Cape York and other charter operators.

“I think there will be lot of business next year if the virus is under control,” he said.

“This year we saw a lot of people in Weipa who probably wouldn’t come up this way normally.”

As for the fishing, it was red hot

around Weipa, especially in the rivers and creeks.

“The barra were going off this year,” Darren said.

“Because we were doing day trips and half-day trips and trying to save costs, we didn’t venture as far as we normally do.

“But we found a heap of barra up the Embley and other creeks not far from the boat ramp.”
