No sign of missing Weipa man inside stomach

Rogue croc killed By MATT NICHOLLS

THERE were no human remains inside the stomach of a 3.5-metre crocodile that was humanely shot and killed by wildlife officers in Weipa earlier this month. The Department of Environment and Science said it received complaints about an aggressive crocodile patrolling the Andoom boat ramp and Mission River Bridge areas. DES officers were able to locate the croc and shoot it before removing it from the water with assistance from Weipa police. Following the disappearance of Weipa man Anthony Vanharen, who was last seen on the Mission River four months earlier, it was decided to perform a necropsy on the repitle to see if there were human remains inside the stomach. Sources told Cape York Weekly that the search came up empty. Mr Vanharen was last seen on his boat in the Mission River on April 30. His boat was located washed ashore and unattended on May 2 by police at Winning Point – the northern side of the Mission River, east of the Mission River Bridge. Police suspected he had been taken by a crocodile after ruling out foul play for his disappearance. A spokesperson for DES said that it euthanised the large estuarine crocodile on September 2 after reports of concern from local residents. “The 3.5-metre crocodile was declared a ‘problem crocodile’, after it had been observed behaving in an aggressive manner. “Under the Queensland Crocodile Management Plan, Weipa is in Zone E. This means that crocodiles displaying dangerous behaviour are targeted for removal. “Weipa is known croc country and people in the area are reminded to be croc-wise.” Cape residents can report all dangerous croc sightings to the Department of Environment and Science by calling 1300 130 372.

THREE GENERATIONS HOOK BEAUT BARRA

The Weipa fishery is regarded as one of the best in Australia and it didn’t disappoint this Bundaberg family. The Griffins – grandfather Ross with son Trent and grandkids Nate and Reed – went out on Saturday with Darren Redman from DJ’s Xstream Fishing Charters and returned with big smiles. For visitors and locals, there are only a couple of weeks left before the barra season closes on October 7. More fishing pics – Page 21
