TWO of the state government’s most senior public servants told a public gathering last week that it had known about Weipa’s pontoon

problems for years, but didn’t have the money to fix it. In a meeting that lasted almost two hours, the TMR officials also blamed North Queensland Bulk Ports for the original design.

Alarmingly, TMR’s boating infrastructure manager admitted that fixing all of Weipa’s boat ramp problems couldn’t be done at once due to a lack of funds in the budget. This is despite serious safety

concerns at the Evans Landing facility. Since opening in 2015, boat users have complained regularly about the ramp and pontoon. When south-easterlies blow in the dry season, the pontoon and

ramp become a safety hazard due to a lack of wave protection. But based on last week’s meeting, boaties shouldn’t be expecting a solution any time soon. Full report – Inside
