CORONAVIRUS CAN’T KEEP REGION DOWN

Cape comes to life By MATT NICHOLLS

EVENTS, elections, awards nights, grand finals and concerts – Cape York had it all last week. Most importantly, it put a smile on the face of hundreds of people across the region. In what has been a tough year, the resilience of Cape York people has come to the fore. Every event looked impossible just a few months ago but, as the restrictions ease, locals have been quick to adapt to return things to a “new normal”. From the Weipa Fishing Classic to the state election, the Cape was a hive of activity last week.

Napranum celebrated its annual DOGIT day with a colour run and some hijinks at the splash park, while Aurukun residents enjoyed a community concert on Saturday. The best and brightest trainees and apprentices were centre stage for the annual MRAEL Western Cape awards, while St Joseph’s Parish School commemorated its five-year anniversary with the launch of a new school song. On the sports field, the Central Cape Suns and Weipa Soccer Club enjoyed their grand final days, while the Weipa Dirt Kart Club celebrated Halloween in style. Read all about it in another huge edition of Cape York Weekly.
