New health care centre opening doors to patients by LUKE MORTIMER PATIENTS will begin using the new $35.4 million Pormpuraaw Primary Health Care Centre from early this month. Work on the extensive Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service facility revamp in the remote Cape community began in August 2024, after the project was greenlit by the previous Queensland Labor Government. The new healthcare centre includes an emergency section equipped with a procedure and resuscitation room, a treatment room, mobile x-ray facilities and a decontamination shower. There’s six dedicated out-

patient consultation rooms to meet future demand and the needs of visiting health partners such as the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS). The facility also has a dental suite, pathology room for specimen collection, a medical records area, an enclosed ambulance bay and a “culturally appropriate” morgue. Labor Opposition Leader Steven Miles visited the Pormpuraaw Primary Health Care Centre last week. “This is an incredible milestone for this really special community, a remote community on the western Cape,” he said. “I’ve been coming here since 2015, when I was first made the community champion (as part

of the Community Champion Program). “Through that entire time, what locals have said to me is that they want a modern, fitfor-purpose health facility, and that’s what they will get with this brand-new clinic. “It’s like having a hospital here in community, an ambulance bay, recess beds, treatment spaces, space for the RFDS and other visiting doctors to use, a new radiography room, dental chairs, even a new pharmacy and medical records space. “It’s exactly what this community deserves, and I hope that it helps to attract the healthcare workforce that this community needs as well.

“The old clinic was very old and run-down, a bit of a rabbit warren, and not big enough for the needs of the community. This new space feels like any new hospital anywhere else in Queensland. It looks fantastic. “It’s also fully fitted out with telehealth facilities so that the hardworking medical staff here, if they need help in the resus bay or in their treatment spaces, they can call through to Cairns Base Hospital or one of our big tertiary hospitals in Brisbane to get advice from specialists.” Pormpuraaw has used the existing centre while the upgraded facility was built by Cairns-based company WIP Constructions.

by CHISA HASEGAWA TORRES Strait (Zenadth Kes) rangers have joined forces with their Papua New Guinea counterparts in a landmark knowledge exchange aimed at strengthening cross-border conservation. The three-day exchange, hosted by the Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA) late last month on Waiben (Thursday Island), brought together Torres Strait rangers and South Fly Rangers to share knowledge, cultural practices and experiences in caring for land and sea. TSRA chairperson George Nona said the gathering recognised the longstanding connections between Zenadth Kes and Papua New Guinea. “The true strength of the Torres Strait Treaty is found in our people and the enduring relationships connecting families, communities and cultures across Zenadth

Kes and Papua New Guinea for generations,” he said. “Like a woven mat, this historic ranger gathering brought together cultures, knowledge and aspirations in caring for land and sea.” The exchange included yarning circles, cultural activities and field visits, with rangers discussing shared challenges and priorities including climate change, food and water security, language preservation, youth engagement, and dugong and turtle management. Participants also explored ways to combine traditional ecological knowledge with western science to support community-led conservation, climate adaptation and sustainable resource management. TSRA Simakal Senior Ranger on Dauan, Laurie Elisala, said the exchange highlighted the importance of cultural authority in environmental management.

“We share the honour and responsibility to learn from our ancestors and pass on this traditional knowledge to care for Country,” he said. South Fly Ranger Elda Dagi, from Kadawa Village, said conservation was a shared responsibility extending beyond communities covered by the treaty. “This program reminds us that we all have a role to play in conservation, not only in the treaty communities but also in inland villages on the mainland,” Ms Dagi said. The South Fly Rangers are funded under the PNG-Australia Partnership and have since returned to Western Province. They will work with local communities to apply lessons from the exchange, strengthen community-led monitoring and support practical climate and conservation activities across the South Fly region.

AUTOMATIC JAIL FOR REPEAT OFFENDERS Victim numbers are down 9.6%* but there’s more to be done. Most serious crimes are committed by repeat offenders. Often while they’re on bail. To break this cycle, the new Queensland Government is expanding Adult Crime, Adult Time by introducing automatic jail for offenders who commit a serious crime while on bail. Colouring comp highlights iconic PDR stretch by CHISA HASEGAWA A COLOURING competition spanning more than 600 kilometres is encouraging tourists to stop and smell the roses as they drive their way up to the tip of Cape York. The Great Cape Colour Chase has brought together Hann River Roadhouse, Musgrave Roadhouse, Archer River Roadhouse, Weipa Camping Ground/ Barramunchies, Bramwell Junction Roadhouse, The Croc Tent and Punsand Bay Cape York Camping for a massive visitor experience, during which they will collect one letter to colour in on the long stretches of road between destinations. By the end, the collected letters will spell ‘CAPE YORK’ and go into the competition for an “ultimate Cape York gift pack filled with memories”. Organiser Darci Lawson said the idea was to make the road trip itself part of the bucket list trip. “There are so many iconic roadhouses, businesses and stops along the journey, and we wanted to create something that encouraged families to stop, explore and engage with these places, rather than just simply driving through them,” she said. “Each letter is its own colouring page and has been individually designed around that particular destination, featuring things that visitors might recognise from their stop there. “Each location also has its own small photo challenge encouraging them to experience something memorable at that stop – whether that is getting a photo on the red dirt roads, checking out the local crocs, visiting the Tip of Australia or catching a Weipa sunset.”

The Great Cape Colour Chase is bringing the region’s iconic stops together for the ultimate visitor experience. Image: Supplied.

Ms Lawson, a co-general manager at Weipa Camping Ground, said the competition had been a great opportunity to connect with businesses hundreds of kilometres away. “For me, one of the biggest goals was to create something that benefits more than just one business. Because there are limited businesses along the Cape, I feel like we are all part of the journey together,” she said. “Cape York is such a unique destination, and every roadhouse, campground

and local business contributes to the overall experience people have when travelling the region. “The Colour Chase gives us an opportunity to work together, encourage visitation across the Cape, and hopefully, create some extra memories for families along the way.” She said the sheets had been “flying off our desk” ahead of the 15 October submission deadline. “Families seem to love having something interactive for the kids to do

along the journey, particularly because there can be some pretty long stretches of driving between stops up here,” she said. “It has also been lovely seeing people getting excited about collecting their next letter and visiting the different participating locations.” Once completed, submit a photo of your coloured in ‘CAPE YORK’ and any challenge photos to reception@ campweipa.com.au.

New patrol boat to crack down on illegal fishing by LUKE MORTIMER CONSTRUCTION has started on an $11 million boat and tender to help Boating and Fisheries Patrol crack down on illegal fishing along Queensland’s northern coastline, the Torres Strait and the Gulf of Carpentaria. The new Department of Primary Industries vessel stretching 21 metres and the smaller boat of 5.4m will enable extended offshore patrols, focused on fisheries surveillance and inspections to enforce fisheries and marine safety rules and regulations. It comes as the multi-agency Operation Broadstaff continues in the Far North to disrupt illegal foreign fishing. There had been at least 11 apprehensions and 25 foreign fishing boat interception in the region since the operation launched in February. Brisbane boat builder Norman R. Wright & Sons are set to build the new patrol boat equipped with specialist navigating and communications technology, improved stability and manoeuvrability, improved fuel range and enhanced onboard accommodation to support patrols of up to 10 days. Cook MP David Kempton said recent incursions of brazen and illegal foreign fishing vessels and crew highlighted why the investment was important to the community. “The waters off Cape York,

Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol will soon have a new boat to help crack down on illegal fishing along Queensland’s northern coastline, the Torres Strait and Gulf of Carpentaria. Image: Supplied.

the Torres Strait and Gulf of Carpentaria are vast, remote and challenging, but this investment will deliver better protections for far north Queensland coastal and island communities,” Mr Kempton said. “For people in the north, our waterways are part of everyday life, they support livelihoods, put food on the table and connect communities so protecting these fisheries for future generations matters. “To have a vessel that’s purpose built for northern conditions, will make a tremendous

difference to the officers patrolling and the community they serve, and I look forward to seeing it on the water.” Primary Industries Minister Tony Perrett said the investment would strengthen Queensland’s ability to protect fisheries, resources and marine environments. “Queensland’s fisheries support regional communities, recreational fishers, commercial operators and tourism businesses, and protecting those resources requires a strong compliance presence on the water,” he said.

“This new vessel will provide Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol officers with the capability to undertake longer offshore patrols, respond to compliance issues and support multi-agency enforcement activities across some of Queensland’s most important and remote marine environments. “I’m also incredibly pleased that the contract for this vessel’s construction has been awarded to a 115-year-old Queensland family business, extending the impact of the project beyond fisheries and into our local

manufacturing industry and jobs.” Queensland Boating & Fisheries Patrol Manager Greg Bowness said: “The enhancements that this will provide will provide significant benefits to the State of Queensland, for the next 30 years.” The State Government has described the new patrol boat as just one action under the Primary Industries Prosper 2050 plan to stop illegal fishing and strengthen community confidence in sustainable fisheries management.

Weipa’s unofficial town photographer remembered by LUKE MORTIMER A WELL-KNOWN Queenslander who was the iconic “unofficial town photographer” of Weipa on Cape York for years has been remembered fondly by family and friends. Michael O’Reilly, part of the O’Reilly family behind the pioneering O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat eco-tourism accommodation at Lamington National Park in south-east Queensland, lived in Weipa from the late 1960s to 1991. He planted many trees around the township and remained connected to the town long after leaving. Mr O’Reilly was born the eldest child of Luke and Marie O’Reilly (née Enright) at Beaudesert on 21 June 1935 and died at Gleneagle on 14 August at the age of 91, following a battle with ill health. He was buried at Beaudesert on 25 August and is survived by his second wife Helen, as well as children and grandchildren. “He was a very gentle fellow, his own man. He came up in the rough and tumble of Weipa in the late 60s and he did well. I don’t think he had an enemy in the world. He was quiet and sort of reserved, a church-going man, but he was friends with everyone,” his son John said. “He was just a normal, quiet family man who worked hard and was grateful for what he got. He was a great Dad to myself and my sister.” Mr O’Reilly first came to Weipa township as a trade assistant, about 1967 or 1968. “Accommodation in those days was at Top Camp, currently Napranum, with a tin shed and dirt runway. He then moved

to the newly built single man’s camp at Rocky Point,” John said. “About 1970, he and my mum, June, moved into a new build at 14 Kooloo Court, where they lived until departure in 1990 due to my mum’s illness. “During this time, Dad worked in the regeneration section, raising and planting natives after the mining operations fin-

ished and driving the workers to sites on the company buses. “Dad had great interest in the bush, sending nearly 500 botanical samples to the Queensland Museum and assisting many graduates and scientists when they came to Weipa and surrounding areas. I spent a lot of time with him planting trees about the town as his hobby.

“He was the unofficial town photographer in days before instant cameras and chemist film processing, doing family portrait and many passport photos in a rigged-up living room. “He had great respect for the Indigenous people of the Cape and Weipa South, as it was known back then. “After Weipa, he moved to Beaudesert, south of Brisbane, and became a forest guide at his cousin’s resort in Lamington National Park, O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat, where he welcomed many current and ex-Weipa visitors.” John said his father “was a great supporter of the town and people” and “loved the Cape”. O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat issued a statement on social media recognising Mr O’Reilly: “It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Michael ‘Big Mick’ O’Reilly.” “For many years, Big Mick enriched the O’Reilly’s experience with his genuine love of the birdlife, unforgettable personality and remarkable ability to remember the names of so many guests – with a little help from his treasured library of notebooks,” the post reads. “He will also be fondly remembered for burning the toast, attempting to play the harmonica and bringing plenty of laughter and character to the mountain. “We know many of you will have special memories of Big Mick … Rest peacefully, Big Mick. You will be greatly missed.” The Australian National Herbarium, a Federal Government initiative, also issued a statement following Mr O’Reilly’s death. It details his love of birdlife, contribution of herbarium specimens and his memorable, charismatic personality.

Sunset, dancing and giving back on the NPA

All eyes will be on the sunset gods when the annual NPA Ladies Gala turns the beach into a sea of pink, orange and yellow in support of local school students on 10 October. Photo: Supplied.

by CHISA HASEGAWA THERE will be plenty of colour, good food and dancing on the cards when this year’s NPA Ladies Gala fundraiser returns with a new theme, new location, and a continued commitment to supporting the local community. The annual Cape York Camping Punsand Bay event is shaping up for another strong turnout following record-break-

ing numbers last year, with about 35 of the 60 tickets already sold despite the night still being around two weeks away on 10 October. This year’s event will be a Sunset Soiree, with the event moving from the pool deck closer to the beach and featuring a colour palette of pink, orange and yellow. Cape York Camping Punsand Bay manager Kahlia Colquhoun said the

night of ladies letting their hair down by a spectacular sunset was set to support the Northern Peninsula Area State College. “We think it’s really important to support the kids at the school,” she said. “They normally come out and do beach clean-ups and some bits and pieces for us over the years, and this is sort of our way of giving back to the local community kids.” Organisers are now calling on local

businesses and community members who may be able to donate prizes for the auction or raffle. Tickets will remain on sale until Thursday 8 October and can be purchased directly through reception by phone or email. For those travelling in, accommodation and camping will be available, making it possible to turn the fundraiser into an overnight Cape York getaway.

Closure of Country Thanikwithi Country

Please be advised that access to Thanikwithi Country is closed until further notice, due to sorry business. Closures to Country are a culturally significant practice and a core part of the agreements between Traditional Owners and Rio Tinto Weipa. These agreements underpin our social licence to operate and enable mining to continue respectfully on Aboriginal land, especially during periods of change. Entering Closed Country without permission is a breach of these agreements and cultural protocols. When closures are breached, Traditional Owners may extend the closure period to ensure cultural processes are properly respected and trust in the shared commitments is maintained. Some closures apply within Rio Tinto's mining lease. Under this lease, Rio Tinto is responsible for managing access and activities to meet safety obligations, uphold agreements, and respect the authority of Traditional Owners. All community members, visitors and contractors are expected to follow closure signage and instructions at all times.

Weipa Santa Paws shoot returns with two dates CHRISTMAS is coming around quickly, and this year, there will be two chances in Weipa to get the fur babies in for a festive photo with Santa. Cape Animal Protection Shelter’s (CAPS) popular Santa Paws fundraiser is returning on 22 and 29 November — two sessions this year after previous photo shoots saw the waitlist fill up and keen participants miss out. CAPS president Shayna Reeves said they were hoping for a big year with the additional session and new timing to coincide with the annual Weipa Town Authority Christmas Markets on 21 November. “A lot of people weren’t able to do it when we held it in December, so this year, we’ve tied it in with the WTA Markets,” she said. “It encourages people, if they’re staying around in town, that there’s something on all weekend. “Each year, it’s getting bigger and bigger – not just numbers, but support.” CAPS caretaker Wayne Wilshere-Cumming will don the Santa getup once again to bring this year’s Candy Cane Christmas theme to life. “We try to come up with different themes as a way to keep it fresh, but at the end of the day, it’s still a nice and memorable keepsake as well,” Ms Reeves said. “We have lots of regulars — some of the people that have already booked for this year have done it the past two years as well.” While Santa Paws is a bit of festive fun, the money raised is helping with some pretty serious costs behind the scenes. The shelter, which is currently running over capacity with 54 dogs in care, has

been looking to expand the facilities with extra exercise yards and indoor kennels. However, having been hit with a run of big vet bills, including heartworm treatment, broken legs, surgeries and emergency caesareans, the balance between allocating funds to immediate needs and long-term goals has been tricky. “At the moment, it’s sort of like a juggling act between vet bills as well as planned upgrades,” she said. “Obviously, the vet bills always come first, so sometimes, it means we can’t always put what we want aside, because we need to prioritise the dogs in care and their treatment. “Every opportunity we get to do a bit of fundraising is always a good chance to catch up and get us back where we want do be. The expansion plan is beginning to come together though, with CAPS aiming to have materials for a new roofing structure delivered before the roads close for the wet season. “That way, we can look at starting the structure between the wet season when trades aren’t so busy, and it also helps us stagger the costs as well,” Ms Reeves said. “We’re steaming ahead on our end; I think when you’ve got a vision, you just want to make it happen, especially when we have been fundraising so hard. “Things are definitely coming into play; we’ve got a plan in motion using local tradies, and it will be really good to see.” The books are now open for the 22 November sessions through CAPS’ Facebook Messenger, with 29 November times to open when the first date fills.

Wallaby Creek Festival weathers wet to deliver big weekend by CHISA HASEGAWA WALLABY Creek Festival has once again brought music, community and a healthy dose of Cape York mud together, with about 1000 people making their way to the Rossville rainforest on 25-27 September. Even the rain earlier in the week turning the grounds into a “mud-fest” could not dampen the packed three-day festivities, with this year’s event featuring some big names thanks to a roughly $100,000 grant through the Federal Government’s Revive Live program. One of the highlights was Mama Kin Spender, who made her maiden appearance at the 24th Wallaby Creek Festival. “She was glorious. Everyone loved her music,” festival director Jen Midgley said. The festival also welcomed Obisun back for a second appearance, along with Brisbane fourpiece Dizzy Days, who brought a hard rock sound to the musical lineup. While plenty of impressive acts travelled up to share their skills, there was no shortage of homegrown talent, including Ella Hartwig, who recently finished her

first international tour in Ireland and the United Kingdom. “She’s one of our locals and one of our babies, because Ella grew up playing at Wallaby,” she said. Children also remained a significant part of the Wallaby Creek program, with a full three-day children’s festival running alongside the main event – an approach Ms Midgley said was important for keeping the event connected to younger generations. “The YouthSpace was incredible. With help, they were making their own big toys, like windup seesaws and all these different things out of logs to create a doit-yourself playground,” she said. “Kaptan Kerri ( Kerri Ryder) coordinated the YouthSpace again this year, but she really left it to the children to work out their own projects and do their own budgeting, so they learned as well.” For Ms Midgley, who has now spent almost a decade and a half volunteering in the role, the excellent music year after year wasn’t necessarily what kept her going. “It’s the connections that people make. It’s the synchronicity. It’s the sharing of cultures and sharing of skills,” she said. “It is a wonderful, wonderful place to be able to connect.”

Wallaby Creek Festival may have been a little extra muddy this year, but that couldn’t wipe the smiles off of festivalgoers’ faces as they connected over one of the event’s biggest musical lineups. Photo: Phat Love.

Push to open ‘ghost road’ continues by LUKE MORTIMER COOK MP David Kempton says permanently opening an iconic road in the Far North used as an emergency link is “worth fighting for” after Queensland Transport Minister Brent Mickelberg outlined a range of challenges. Quaid’s Road, formerly SouthedgeWangetti Rd, is a 32-kilometre stretch connecting the Captain Cook Highway at Wangetti and Mulligan Highway at Southedge. The “ghost road” named after George Quaid, who sought approval to build the road in 1983, was never officially opened and has been shut to the general public for decades. But it has been used by residents and as an emergency connector between Cairns and the tablelands following the destruction wrought by Cyclone Jasper on the Kuranda Range three years ago. Mareeba’s Iain Edwards created a petition to State Parliament to reopen the road and thousands of people ended up signing in a couple of months. Mr Mickelberg responded in a letter on 18 September: “Should an entity such as local government wish to reopen Quaid Road as a public thoroughfare, a number of activities would be required.” “The first step would be to secure the land used for the road, as it is currently privately owned. This could be achieved through a negotiated sale with the current owner or through the formal land resumption process, which gives landowners certain appeal rights,” he said. “Once ownership has been resolved,

the road would need to be brought up to appropriate standards. As the land is privately owned, no assessment has been undertaken by the department. “However, it is understood that structural defects along the road have contributed to embankment failures during previous wet season events. Given this, and the department’s experiences with similar issues on roads in the area, it is anticipated that significant investment would be required.” Mr Mickelberg said any work on the road may need approval under federal environment laws. “Petitioners should also be aware that under the Wet Tropics Management Plan, Quaid Road is situated within Zone A, which provides the highest level of con-

servation protection. Current legislation does not provide a mechanism to rezone Zone A land for community service infrastructure that did not exist prior to 1 September 1998. Under the current legislative framework, the road can only be maintained in its existing state,” he wrote. Mr Kempton said he had received “numerous queries” about Mr Mickelberg’s response. He said the Transport Minister did not say the road could not be reopened, but “set out prerequisites were this to occur”. “I acknowledge eight kilometres of the 32-kilometre road are on private land, however, that landowner has indicated in writing he is prepared to make the land and infrastructure available should the road be opened to the public. The balance

PROTECTED BY PEOPLE LIKE YOU.

of the road or 24 km is the property of the state,” Mr Kempton said. “The second point is that Quaid’s Road traverses Mareeba Shire and Douglas Shire, both of whom have given in principle support for the opening and once repaired would likely take on responsibility for ongoing maintenance. “The third point is that Quaid’s Road had approvals and was built to a state standard and suffered only minimal slippage in the flood events that decimated all range crossings in recent years. Any rectification would only be a fraction of the expenditure on the Kuranda, Rex and Palmerston ranges and indications are the only real cost will be resealing sections.” Mr Kempton said the “iconic link” which had “survived the test of time” was constructed with World Heritage approval in 1989, before the 1998 Zone A “imposition”. “It will provide a critical link for shift workers, locals, travellers, medical emergencies and perhaps evacuations when other links are closed for maintenance and repairs and could divert traffic from the Kuranda Range, which will likely suffer roadwork delays for years to come,” he said. “The road may play a major part in the delivery of Wangetti Trail stage 3 and provides amazing tourism opportunities through access to national parks and wonderful vistas.” Mr Kempton said he would continue to push for the reopening. “So, far as I am concerned the people of the north have spoken and this is a project worth fighting for,” he said.

Weipa parkrun celebrates milestone Sands too

good on Wackers Wednesday

– From page 20 Rita Spencer, Peter Mullins, Carmen Dixon and Nathaniel Pollard were the other participants to notch up PB efforts on the day. “I love that parkrun keeps all the milestones, and I think it’s nice for the people who think it’s just for the same people who go every week,” Ms Bowden said. “When those stats come out each week saying we had this many first-timers and this many PBs, you can go in and have a look at the results, and some people’s PBs might be 40 or 50 minutes. “It’s not just for the running elite, and I think that is what helps bring new people in and helps keep people in.” This week’s volunteering thanks went to Chris Blythe, Kat Hansen, Sarah Agnew, Catherine Shepperd, Mackenzie Agnew, Susan Tuckwood and Matthew Bakes. Ms Bowden said Weipa parkrun had grown immensely in the past 10 years, especially in the younger generation, and she was excited to see what the future held for them.

“I think one of the most exciting things that I’ve seen lately is the cohort of kids coming through,” she said. “When running was just starting out as this social thing in Weipa, it was mostly just adults. “Occasionally, you had a few kids, but there’s so many more coming through now,

and it’s really cool to see that it’s starting young and these kids becoming part of the community as well.” Anyone wanting to join the parkrun excitement every Saturday morning can do so by assembling at the shelter next to the hospital roundabout in Nanum before the starter’s pistol fires at 7am.

by JACK HIGH THE Weipa Bowls Club’s remarkable 2026 season continues in impressive fashion as a representative quartet celebrates victory in the 2026 Innisfail Bowls Club TwoDay Classic on 26-27 September. With a lucrative $10,000 prize pool up for grabs, the event attracted an 18-team field, with sides travelling from as far north as Weipa and south to Townsville to battle it out for North Queensland lawn bowling glory. It was the Weipa combination of Louis Drake, Fraser Maguire, Carl Schapel and Scott McDowell that ultimately came out on top, finishing the tournament undefeated with four wins and an

outstanding +83 shot margin. The Weipa quartet held off a strong Townsville team, which also recorded four wins but finished on +79, just four shots behind the triumphant western Cape York pack. Edge Hill Cairns Bowls Club claimed third place with four wins and a +77 margin, while fourth went to a composite side featuring Weipa Bowls Club president Ben Moore, finishing on +73. With Weipa bowlers continuing to make their mark across North Queensland and beyond, the Innisfail Classic victory added another significant result to what has been one of the Cape York club’s most successful seasons in recent history – and 2026 is far from over.

DAVE Sands proved too good when 15 Wackers took on the front 9 on Wednesday (30 September). He just beat Ross Craven by half a shot when the handicaps were applied. Sands came in with a 46 giving him a nett of 32.5, while Ross finished with a 40 and a nett of 33. PK landed just metres from the 7th flag to take that category, but no one managed to finish on the 9th green – except for young Emily Foy, who had come for a ride in dad’s buggy, but decided to have a crack on the last. Emily put her ball up on the green in front of a number of players. The highly contended Bradman’s went to Leeroy Ahmat, who has had a run of them lately. Wackers encourages all players, new and experienced, to join in and enjoy a great afternoon at Carpentaria Golf Club. Tee-off is between 2.30pm and 4.30pm every Wednesday. The 9 holes to play is on the whiteboard.

Weipa celebrates parkrun worldwide 22nd anniversary

Weipa was one of more than 2800 locations celebrating the 22nd anniversary of parkrun on 3 October. Photo: Weipa parkrun/Facebook.

by CHISA HASEGAWA WEIPAITES celebrated a Saturday morning staple with parkrunners across the country when the worldwide five-kilometre running event celebrated its 22nd anniversary on 2-3 October. The first parkrun was held in London on 2 October 2004 with 13 runners and five volunteers. Since then, it has grown to nearly 13 million registered partici-

pants across 2,800+ locations in 23 countries. Weipa parkrun, which celebrated its 10th birthday earlier this year, marked the global milestone with 44 runners, joggers and walkers, including five first-timers, on 3 October. Weipa parkrun event director Denica Bowden said the free, weekly circuit had created a “cool community” in the western Cape York township.

“People from all walks of life come together on a Saturday morning to start their weekend in a positive way, and hang out for a chat afterwards,” she said. “Most people who visit Weipa parkrun are from other parkruns, and we like to go around and ask where they’re from and welcome them, and that normally spurs on some chats as well.” Sam Hansen was the first to cross the finish line at 20 minutes, 22 seconds, fol-

lowed by Ralph Mullins at 22:56 and firsttimer Reagan Campbell at 24:01. The group also welcomed Kerrie Waldon, Matthew Woods, Mike Waldon and Amelia Battes on their inaugural Weipa parkrun. Chandy Koruthu ran a personal best time for the second week in a row, greeting the timekeepers at 27:58. – Continued page 19
