Shark attack heroes recognised TWO courageous Torres Strait boys have been honoured for saving their mate’s life following a horror shark attack off Thursday Island. Titus Joseph, 11, dived into the fray and dragged his cousin Sam Nai, 14, from the water with barely a second thought, despite the large shark lingering about. Yenick Aniba, 14, managed to alert bystanders, who helped stem bleeding from a shocking bite to Sam’s abdomen. One paramedic described Titus’s efforts as “superhuman”, and the Queensland Ambulance Service praised the boys for their “quick thinking under extreme pressure”, which “undoubtedly helped save Sam’s life”. Cattle resilience drives 2026 Conquer the Corrugations by CHISA HASEGAWA A NEW theme leaning into Cape York’s agricultural industry is keeping the messages of resilience and adaptability strong at this year’s Conquer the Corrugations walk. Participants in the 12th annual mental health event will trudge from Coen to Archer River – about 46 kilometres – over two days on 3 and 4 October. This year’s theme, Cape York Peninsula cattle, pays homage to the considerable challenges faced across the region following extropical cyclones Narelle and Jasper. “We’ve had Jasper hit the southern part of the Peninsula, and then this year, we’ve had Narelle hit the northern part. We kind of figured that a cattle theme just makes it really real, because that’s one of the main industries in this region,” co-founder Emma Jackson said. “Cattle have to adapt to the hot, they adapt to the cool, they adapt to whatever the environmental challenges might be. Cattle are quite powerful; Cape York has some of the hardest conditions in Australia, and they survive and thrive.” Conquer the Corrugation began as a small walking event to honour co-founder Debbie Jackson’s son and Emma Jackson’s nephew, Dillon, who lost his battle with mental health. While the heart of the event remains the same — providing a space for those struggling with mental health to open up and keeping Dillon’s memory alive — Ms Jackson said anybody, no matter what kind of challenges they faced, was welcome to take part. “It’s not just for people who have been affected by suicide or mental health; it’s for anybody and everybody, and it’s not only for people who have done it before — it’s an open community event where everyone is invited,” she said.

“Initially, it did start because of Dillon taking his life, but we all face different levels of challenge, everybody’s impacted, and it’s turned into an event that helps people build tools and strategies to better cope with the challenges of life. “It’s a family-friendly event that, yes, the purpose is to bring people together, create a safe environment, and have people talk and share their stories, but it’s also become an event that’s fun. It’s got a physical challenge as well as a bit of an emotional challenge.” Mental health services such as Queensland Health and Royal Flying Doctor Service will also take part in the walk to facilitate conversations and support Conquerors on the mammoth two-day journey. Participants will cover about 46 kilometres over two days on 3 and 4 October.

What’s on at... Return of birthing applauded, BOWLIES off da boat but pathology services up in air fresh DJ TIKELZ by LUKE MORTIMER

THE Rural Doctors Association of Queensland (RDAQ) and Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) have applauded the return of birthing services at Cooktown. But the RDAQ has pointed out questions remain about pathology services in the pending $200 million redevelopment of the ageing Cooktown Multipurpose Health Service. On 13 September, the Queensland Government announced it was ticking off an election promise and birthing would resume at Cooktown the next day. Cook Shire Mayor Robyn Holmes welcomed the return of services, but had a question for Health and Ambulance Services Minister Tim Nicholls. She said she was told that “pathology had been removed from the hospital build”. “Level 3 birthing services includes pathology. Can you confirm for all the future mums in southern Cape York Peninsula that pathology is included to ensure they receive ‘world-class health services’?” the mayor asked on Facebook. Pathologists study diseases by examining tissues, cells, and body fluids. Speaking about services at Cooktown, RDAQ president Dr Helen Fraser said: “Access to timely pathology services enhances safe clinical care.” “There is an opportunity to ensure new facilities deliver optimal local capacity in remote Far North Queensland,” she said. The RDAQ called on the government to ensure there was enough funding provided for “optimal infrastructure improvements” at Cooktown Hospital. “Rural families should not have to rely on headlines to

understand the future of their local maternity services,” Dr Fraser said. “Queensland has an opportunity to demonstrate genuine leadership in rural healthcare by matching public commitments with transparent planning, consultation and investment in the services communities need.” Dr Fraser added: “What has been achieved for Cooktown is to be celebrated.” Mr Nicholls’ office and Queensland Health were contacted. A Health spokesperson responded: “Cooktown Multipurpose Health Service has a broad point-of-care capability to support timely clinical decision-making.” “As is the case at many regional hospitals, tests requiring more advanced analysis will be sent to other labs for processing,” they said. “The proposed master plan for the Cooktown Multipurpose Health Service is in the final stages of refinement and ensures pathology services can expand and modernise as technology and community needs evolve.” Support service requirements for maternity are listed under state clinical services

capability framework (CSCF) guidelines. It is not a requirement for Level 3 maternity services to have on-site labs, and off -site services are considered “accessible”. Meanwhile, the ACRRM said the return of birthing services at Cooktown enabled more women and families to have their babies closer to home. The College said the rural generalist-led healthcare model which has been established in Cooktown drew on the successful restoration of Weipa birthing services in 2024. ACRRM board director and medical director of maternity services for Cape York Dr John Hall helped lead the restoration of services in both communities. Dr Hall said the healthcare milestone for Cooktown and surrounding communities reflected the hard work of the many people involved. He acknowledged the leadership of Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service (TCHHS) director of medical services Eastern Dr Natasha Coventry and director of midwifery Michelle O’Connor. “Natasha and Michelle have provided exceptional leader-

ship, working with the local team to build the workforce, clinical capability, and systems needed to restore a safe and sustainable service,” he said. “This achievement belongs to the whole multidisciplinary team and the community members who have continued to advocate for local birthing.” ACRRM president Dr Rod Martin said the return of birthing in the towns showed what could be achieved when rural generalist and multidisciplinary healthcare teams worked together. “We have seen in Weipa what bringing birthing back to a rural community can mean for women, families, and the broader health service,” he said. “Cooktown builds on that success, with obstetric-trained and anaesthetic-trained rural generalists working alongside midwives, nurses, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health professionals and other clinicians.” TCHHS states women with healthy, low-risk pregnancies will be referred for assessment at Cooktown. Cook MP David Kempton said: “This is great news for families in Cooktown, Hopevale, Wujal, Lakeland and district who have been forced to leave home for four to six weeks prior to the birth, causing separation, stress and financial hardship.” “In the 1990s, when I lived in Cooktown, my three children were born away from Cooktown which involved months of separation, time away from the farm and the business,” he said. “The first pregnancy was placenta previa and the second child was born with a heart condition both requiring specialist attention at birth, so I know first-hand how traumatic childbirth can be for families in remote areas.”

TSI boys recognised for shark attack heroics by LUKE MORTIMER A PAIR of courageous young mates from Thursday Island have both been honoured as Young Hero of the Year at the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) Commissioner’s Achievement Awards after scooping another youngster from the water and stemming his bleeding following a horrific shark attack. Sam Nai, 14, was fishing at Quarantine Wharf on the Torres Strait hub Waiben (Thursday Island) with his friend Titus Joseph, 11, and cousin Yenick Aniba, 14, on 11 October 2025. When Sam jumped in the water, he was quickly attacked by a large shark and suffered a significant bite to his abdomen. Titus dived in and managed to pull Sam to a nearby rock wall – despite the shark lingering nearby – and screamed for someone to help his badly injured mate. Yenick called out to a group of bystanders, who used a shirt and picnic blanket to stabilise Sam’s injuries before QAS paramedics arrived. One paramedic who rushed to help described

Titus’s efforts as “superhuman”. QAS has praised the boys for their “courage and quick thinking under extreme pressure”, which “undoubtedly helped save Sam’s life”. Doctors told Sam’s family they believed he suffered one of the most severe shark bites anyone has survived. Audio has been released

by QAS of Sam’s mother Shanna Mosby phoning triple-0 for help: “My son Samuel, who is 14 years old, was swimming and something bit him. And he has a huge, deep gash and several smaller ones across his left abdomen to his back … it looks like a shark,” she tells the operator. Sam was “going pale” and drifted “in and out”

of consciousness, but survived in large part thanks to the help of Titus and Yenick, and other bystanders. The Young Hero of the Year Award recognises young people who played a “significant role in the chain of survival to save the life of another and shown maturity, courage and leadership in a difficult or demanding situation”.

QAS Commissioner Craig Emery was blown away by Titus and Yenick’s bravery: “Kids never cease to amaze you, do they?” “Imagine the horrific scene of seeing one of your mates bitten by a shark, languishing in the water, for one of his mates to dive in to bring him back to the jetty while his other friend called for help,” he said. “The paramedics that

attended that scene called out not only the bravery of those two young men, but the life-saving techniques that brought Sam back to us today for this award.” Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Tim Nicholls presented the award to the boys at the (QAS) Remembrance Service and Commissioner’s Achievement Awards on 11 September.

Island health facilities to be upgraded by CHISA HASEGAWA A BRAND new building, upgraded facilities and improved staff accommodation are on their way for two primary health care centres on Moa Island to better service community members. Construction for major upgrades to the St Paul’s and Kubin primary health care centres will commence later this month, marking a significant step towards improved health care for both communities. At St Paul’s community, a new primary health care centre will be delivered that will include a procedure room and two consultation rooms, while existing staff accommodation will also be refurbished. A temporary centre will be established on-site to allow health services to continue while the existing facility is demolished. At the Kubin Primary Health Care Centre, the existing facility will undergo various upgrades, including a new enclosed waiting room, covered meeting area, enclosed entry and new access ramp. Ahead of the works, expected to be completed in late 2027, community information sessions and meet the team events were held at Kubin and St Paul’s last week. Torres and Cape Hospital and

Health Service (TCHHS) executive general manager north Marita Sagigi said the sessions helped residents understand what to expect during construction, and how services would continue. “As construction begins, it is important that our communities know what is happening, what changes to expect and how ser-

vices will continue during the redevelopment,” she said. “Our staff do an outstanding job delivering care, often in challenging circumstances, and these projects will provide improved facilities to support them in their work.” H C Building and Construction has been appointed to de-

liver the $14.7 million upgrade as part of the State Government’s Hospital Rescue Plan. “The Timely Investment Infrastructure Maintenance (TIIM) funding is allowing us to invest in essential upgrades that will improve the patient experience, support better service delivery, and help us attract and re-

tain staff in both communities,” TCHHS chief executive Rex O’Rourke said. “These projects are an important investment in the future of health care on Moa Island and will provide more contemporary and functional facilities for the St Paul’s and Kubin communities.”

S E P T E M B E R 2026 SEPTEMBER 2026

Monthly Community Update Message from the Chair Hi Weipa, Can you believe it’s midSeptember already?! Where has the year gone? August was a bit of a blur, with plenty happening throughout the month. We hosted the Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ) Policy Executive, a group of 16 Mayors from across Queensland who represent and advocate for Queensland’s local councils. They are a great bunch of people and are very influential as a group. They are now also great supporters and fans of Weipa and the Western Cape, and have a much better understanding of why Weipa is so critical to the region and the State. This raises our profile significantly. There is nothing quite like bootson-the-ground experience, and for this group of Mayors, many of whom I had met previously and spoken to about Weipa’s unique existence, it proved to be a very educational and enlightening trip. The feedback we received was that they all thoroughly enjoyed their visit, which also included trips to Mapoon and Napranum. They gave a special mention to the Weipa Pottery Shop, which they absolutely loved.

We have just kicked off an exciting project to develop a precinct master plan for Rocky Point, which will include the area from the boat ramp back to about the SES shed. We are focusing on all of the public spaces and looking at how the different areas are used, how they connect, how we can make better use of under-utilised spaces, and how we can improve the amenities to create a well-thought-out entertainment and leisure precinct that everyone can enjoy. Obviously, to undertake the work proposed in the master plan, we will need a decent amount of money. However, having the concept plan enables us to respond quickly when applying for any funding we may be eligible for, and also allows us to allocate capital funds in the budget for staged upgrades. Community consultation will form an important part of developing the concept, and all stakeholders will have opportunities to provide feedback and help shape the future vision for the precinct. I popped in to catch up with the Seniors Social Lounge group at the Library this month, and d we had a great chat about Weipa a back in the day. They had some great r questions and plenty of o feedback

about our community. The Library is such an important asset for this community, and our fabulous Library staff really do go above and beyond to make it a welcoming and inclusive space for so many members of our community. By collaborating with our local health staff, they have also been able to host a social group for some of Weipa’s long time residents, who have contributed greatly to this community over many years. It’s such a great activity supporting a great bunch of people. We held the last Sunset Markets for the year, which were well attended as usual. You just can’t beat the sunsets this time of year. awesome job as usual. We are very lucky to live in a community where people volunteer so much of their time to pull these events together, to a standard that would rival some professional rodeo events. Well done! That’s about all I have for now. Thanks for reading, and remember, my door is always open if you ever want to pop down for a chat. See you out and about.

Lockhart River art project to open door to history by CHISA HASEGAWA THE door to history is being opened through an art project connecting Lockhart River youth, Elders and the local art centre. Lockhart State School kicked off its Front Door Art Project earlier this month, during which students work with local artists to create paintings on doors based on Elders’ stories of moving from Old Site to New Site. Through engaging in storytelling sessions, students have learned about the journey of their community, from its establishment in 1924 at Orchid Point and later Bare Hill (Old Site), the resistance to move further north to Bamaga, and the agreement to move slightly north and inland near Iron Range Airport (New Site). “We as a school in community see it as extremely important that the history of our Elders, and in particular, the move that occurred from Old Site to New Site, is retained,” Lockhart State School principal Kathy Ona said. “It’s something that evolved from work we’ve been doing in the school in regards to the history of Lockhart, and the children needing to know more about our Elders. “The Elders and the school and local artists working together for that story to be told, and then represented through artwork on doors, was a creative way to keep those stories alive.” Ms Ona said the doors held a range of meaning to represent the move and the connection between generations. “The door from Old Site closed, and then the doors at New Site opened. It’s

also metaphorical as well in the sense of doors closing and new doors opening in life, and the things that happen along the way,” she said. “It’s also opening the door for young people to listen to the Elders … and be

empowered by our local artists, because we have so many talented artists in the community for our children to see how art is a very important form of expression and telling stories. “It’s also the importance of engaging

young people in schooling through doing these creative partnerships.” Students will work on their creations under the guidance of local artists and Elders before the completed doors are presented to families at the end of the school year.

Everlina Bridge undergoing long-awaited revamp by LUKE MORTIMER HOPE Vale Aboriginal Shire Council has announced work has started to upgrade the critical Everlina Bridge to increase its load capacity and improve flood resilience. The long-awaited major infrastructure project on Elim Road a short distance from Hope Vale, about 45 kilometres northwest of Cooktown on Cape York is due to be finished by 30 June next year. The State Government provid-

ed $5.14 million through Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DFRA) and $900,000 through the Works for Queensland 2024-2027 Program. Orion Project Consulting has been appointed project management consultants by the council, while Lancini Consulting Engineers has taken on the role of design consultants. Construction of the “transformative” upgrade has been scheduled for the 2027 dry season to ensure uninterrupted ac-

cess during the wet season, according to the council. The bridge is the only access route to essential services and infrastructure, including a water treatment plant, wastewater treatment plant and the local tip. Work will minimise environmental impacts and careful consideration has been given to vegetation and waterways, the council states. Procurement of precast bridge components is due to be finished

by December. Mayor Bruce Gibson said at an August council meeting that would be a significant milestone for the project, and put the council in a better position to ensure work would be carried out as scheduled. The upgraded bridge spanning 74 metres across the Endeavour River’s right branch with reinforced concrete will be raised above the 100-year average flood level and provide more reliable access to Hope Vale during wild weather conditions.

Currently, the single-lane bridge has a 2.5-tonne load capacity, but another lane will be added and the weight limit will be increased to support more emergency and heavy vehicles. The upgraded bridge should be more durable due to the use of “advanced engineering techniques, including prestressed concrete deck units and reinforced concrete piers”. It will be built on the existing alignment, maintaining its position within the Elim Road reserve.

Closure of Country Thanikwithi Country

Please be advised that access to Thanikwithi Country is closed until further notice, due to sorry business. Closures to Country are a culturally significant practice and a core part of the agreements between Traditional Owners and Rio Tinto Weipa. These agreements underpin our social licence to operate and enable mining to continue respectfully on Aboriginal land, especially during periods of change. Entering Closed Country without permission is a breach of these agreements and cultural protocols. When closures are breached, Traditional Owners may extend the closure period to ensure cultural processes are properly respected and trust in the shared commitments is maintained. Some closures apply within Rio Tinto's mining lease. Under this lease, Rio Tinto is responsible for managing access and activities to meet safety obligations, uphold agreements, and respect the authority of Traditional Owners. All community members, visitors and contractors are expected to follow closure signage and instructions at all times.

CIAF calls for 2027 artists following Cape, Torres success by CHISA HASEGAWA CAPE York and Torres Strait Islander artists with a story to share are invited to help shape Far North Queensland’s biggest First Nations art fair. Expressions of interest (EOI) are now open for the 2027 Cairns Indigenous Art Fair (CIAF), calling on Indigenous creatives from across the region to represent their Country and history across the Art Fair Showcase, Artisans Showcase, Music and Dance Program and Masterclass Series events. Returning to Cairns on 8-11 July 2027, the call follows a highly successful 2026 CIAF for Cape York and the Torres Strait, at which several prominent artists, including Daisy Hamlot (Hope Vale), Keith Wikmunea (Aurukun), Jimmy K. Thaiday (Torres Strait) and Douglas Tamwoy (Bamaga/Torres Strait) were recognised at the prestigious CIAF Art Awards. The 17th edition of the event was also a record season, bringing together more than 450 artists, exhibitors, performers and presenters to deliver the largest Art Fair and Artisans Showcase in history.

CIAF artistic director Teho Ropeyarn said the annual EOI process was an important part of bringing together a diverse range of storytellers. “CIAF is built on First Nations voices, stories and cultural expression, and each year, we want to hear from artists and practitioners at different stages of their creative journey,” he said. “From emerging and independent artists finding a platform alongside established practitioners, to musicians and dancers sharing language, movement and song, and artists passing on knowledge through our Masterclass Series, these opportunities are about visibility, cultural continuity and creating pathways for First Nations artists. “CIAF is also a place for truthtelling and cultural sovereignty, a platform where artists can tell their own stories, honour enduring cultural knowledge and explore new and contemporary forms of expression.” EOIs will close on 16 November, with CIAF’s 2027 theme to be unveiled next month. Further information, eligibility requirements and applications are available via CIAF’s new website at www.ciaf.com.au.

Far North fuel shock woes in spotlight by LUKE MORTIMER REPRESENTATIVES from sectors including tourism, aviation, freight and logistics have been banging their heads together and lobbying the Federal Government in the face of fuel supply issues and volatile prices impacting the Far North. Strategic storage and distribution, resilience and support for particularly exposed communities were among the recommendations which emerged from RDA Tropical North’s latest FNQ Fuel Impacts Roundtable, held earlier this month. RDA Tropical North board chair Hurriyet Babacan said 30 representatives took part. Sectors represented included local government, health and community ser-

vices, retail and food security, First Nations services, small business and infrastructure. Professor Babacan said: “These outcomes were shared with Federal Regional Development Minister Kristy McBain during her recent visit, Member for Leichhardt Matt Smith, Senator Nita Green, Federal and State Government stakeholders.” “The impact of fuel supply fears has been similar to the impacts of natural disasters and once again serves to highlight the vulnerability of regional and remote areas facing the cumulative impact of consecutive disasters, increased cost of living and housing pressures,” she said. “The FNQ Fuel Impacts Roundtable confirmed that physical fuel supply was largely maintained in the early months of

the Middle East crisis. However, it did not prevent significant economic and service impacts across the region. “These impacts could escalate with the region remaining vulnerable to future fuel price and supply shocks as the conflict continues. “Several key impacts were identified including significant reduction in tourism demand and visitor expenditure, unharvested produce where costs exceeded expected returns, and delayed recruitment across small business. “Local government resources were redirected from maintenance and capital works, there were disproportionate impacts on remote and First Nations communities, and uncertainty around essential service priorities.

“Higher fuel and freight costs, price volatility and uncertainty are compounded by Far North Queensland’s distance from major markets, reliance on road, air and marine freight, limited transport alternatives and diesel dependence in many remote communities “To strengthen our region’s resilience, governments need to consider not just physical supply, but also affordability, confidence, service continuity, preparedness and longer-term energy resilience. The first Roundtable was held in July, as the Federal Government’s temporary fuel excise reduction measures were in place. The relief ended in August. The wider public has been invited to have their say online at rdatropicalnorth. org.au.

The Cooktown Salties under-18s girls and coach Ashton Viranatuleo hit the road to battle teams across the region at the Diamonds in the Sky carnival on 12 September, where they defeated Yarrabah in the final showdown to return home victorious. Viranatuleo said the Salties played three games, each ending in a win, to qualify for the grand final. “The girls were super focused, and we just came out ready to play,” she said. “From the beginning of the game, the girls were just locked in; we ended up going 13-0 to start the game, and we won by 20 at the end.” The Cooktown team was made up of seven U14, U16 and U18 girls, as well as ex-NBL1 player Viranatuleo, who dusted off her shoes to participate in the combined U18 and

adult ladies category. “I made an NBL1 comeback for three games this year to help out the Cairns Dolphins, but before that, I haven’t played properly for nine years. I’m dying, I’m so sore,” she laughed. “I think it also made it a bit of fun for them, and having that leadership from someone older on the court worked out well.” She said the players’ passion and improvement on the court since the U14 girls team debuted outside Cooktown for the first time in May 2025 was a huge point of pride. “Twelve months ago, they were still trying to build confidence and just feel out the game; it was all quite new,” Viranatuleo said. “Now, some of the girls are taking their basketball a lot more seriously; they’re confident, their skills and everything are just improving so quickly, and they just love any chance to play. “From a Salties perspective, we’re always trying to find as many games as we can for the kids up here, so to have four games in one day, they were just stoked.”

EDDIE Tiemens was best of the bunch when the Wackers crew tackled the Carpentaria Golf Club front 9 last Wednesday. Brandon Waratini enjoyed a great 42 off the stick, but winner of the field of 15 was Tiemens with a gross of 50 and a nett of 32.5. Gary Head’s 51 and nett of 33 gave him the runner-up position. Head also took the 15th pinshot, again using his putter off the tee block. His ball ended up just 1.5 metres shy of the hole. No one landed on the 18th and the week’s Bradman’s award went to Rory Scarborough . New and experienced golfers are encouraged to join the Wackers on Wednesday afternoons. Taggers nab touch honours

The Top End Taggers have been crowned the top team of the season after a thrilling win at the 2026 Weipa Touch Association grand final. Photos: Supplied.

by CHISA HASEGAWA ANOTHER record-breaking season for touch football in Weipa has come to a gripping close after a neck-andneck grand final showdown. The top two senior teams from Weipa Touch Association’s A-grade, B-grade and C-grade divisions clashed on 11 September at Andoom Oval in a bid to claim western Cape bragging rights. In the A-grade battle, Top End Taggers and Coastal Crocs were locked at 11-all when the full-time siren sounded, sending the decision into a thrilling drop-off. When teams returned to the paddock in extra time, it was Top End Taggers who emerged victorious over

Coastal Crocs to hold the A-grade trophy aloft in front of a vocal group of fans. While they narrowly toppled the competition to finish off the season, Weipa Touch Association (WTA) celebrated the increased interest and calibre of touch football in the region. “We had 14 teams this year in the senior competition, so one extra team from last year,” WTA vice president Jimmy Mann said. “We expected them to be really close grand final matches. Last year was a little bit one-sided; there were a couple of teams that weren’t really reliable with players turning up. “The overall skill level in Weipa has definitely grown; majority of the

people who played were teams from last year, and players were a lot more consistent with rocking up and having full teams this year.” Other results on the night included Cheers for Beers defeating Lacking Stamina 11-9 in the B-grade division, and Big Dig taking the win 5-3 after an encounter with Touchy Feely. Mann said he was looking forward to another big year for Weipa Touch Association in 2027, adding that there may be some basic coaching sessions before the season to help new players get involved. “I think those numbers will slowly keep building up more and more. We probably have the capacity to max out at about 18 teams, so we’ll keep pushing towards that,” he said.
