Traditional owners are rejoicing over two historic native title rights determinations covering almost 4000 square kilometres of Cape York land in total, including iconic locations like Cape Tribulation and Black Mountain. The Federal Court has formally recognised the Eastern Kuku Yalanji people’s claim over 217,884 hectares and the Western Yalanji people’s claim over 170,827ha. Full story page 3.

While some Federal Government work is underway to fix substandard telecommunications in remote Cape communities, residents and visitors have been left hanging during two recent, lengthy phone outages – with those affected unable to call triple-0 for help in an emergency. Telstra has blamed rats and a bushfire for the service cuts and suggested isolated residents turn to satellite tech, as the government says it’s making inroads to fail-safe the network and improve infrastructure.
