Napranum’s biennial celebration of community, music, art and connection was a roaring success this year. The Ruchook Cultural Festival 2026 held from Thursday to Sunday drew an enthusiastic crowd keen to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait culture through a wide range of activities including workshops, tours, yarning circles, and dancing demos. Child safety system a mess amid shocking rates of violence against women
The child safety system on the Cape and across the state is in tatters as the State Government moves to act on dozens of crucial recommendations from a damning inquiry. Part of the problem locally is endemic family disharmony and horrific rates of alcohol-fuelled violence against women, according to Indigenous thinktank the Cape York Institute. Full story page 5.
