While we recognize the transformation of our 30 acres and marvel at the changes to our physical footprint, we also look to tomorrow, as we build upon that history with the construction of our 50,000-square-foot Clarke+Ervin Center for Innovation and Performing Arts. With the creation of any new technology, there is always an understandable fear that it will negatively disrupt the norm. Disruption, and change in general, can be hard. It can be scary. When computers were invented, English teachers feared that good handwriting would go by the wayside. When calculators were invented, math teachers feared that mental computational skills would be ruined. When the internet became commonplace, history teachers feared that the ability to research would be ruined. In reality, new technology opens doors for students. It creates opportunities for learning that otherwise would not be possible. With the recent advent of OpenAI’s ChatGPT and other artificial intelligence platforms, the question should not be what will be ruined but instead how we can harness these great new possibilities in the classroom. Perhaps now, instead of needing a peer to review a draft essay for grammatical errors, we can more rapidly and reliably ask a computer. Perhaps we can eliminate the post-dinner time ritual of parents struggling to remember how to do all the math their children are learning and instead ask AI for step-by-step support on those tricky problems. Last spring, we were fortunate to attend a conference in Denver where top educational thought leaders from around the world joined together to discuss best practices and the future of education. Much of the discussion was about AI and its role in schools. The feeling we got was that educators were not scared or threatened by AI. It’s not replacing teachers or taking away jobs – in fact, we are hopeful it could help us better retain faculty. Tools such as ChatGPT can help give a teacher a jump start on a lesson plan, proofread an email or help generate test and quiz questions in minutes, allowing more time and energy for teachers to spend on what's important: building relationships with students, giving authentic feedback and taking care of their own personal and professional wellness. Historically, teachers have spent hours researching content, crafting engaging lessons and creating differentiated lesson plans, often leaving them drained of the mental stamina needed to deepen relationships with students, From an early age, students like Izzy Dukes study the foundations of computing and cultivate their technology skills. These skills will be critical as our younger learners enter a new age of AI-assisted learning.

Schools are no longer responsible for only managing student IQ, but also tending to and improving their students' EQ in order to help them navigate a world that requires mental and emotional resilience in order to thrive. Instead of continuing to add to an already full plate, AI tools such as ChatGPT can help with the transactional tasks of education so that teachers can do the transformational work that is needed As the use of AI develops in education, students will discover new innovative ways to collaborate, complete research and report findings.

to prepare their students for the future. Fortunately, a chatbot cannot replace authentic human relationships; it can, however, help design and manage instructional tasks so that more time and energy is available for tending to the social and emotional wellness of students.

Despite the potential positive uses of AI to enhance teaching and learning, we can’t ignore the disruptive nature of tools such as ChatGPT on traditional instruction. These powerful tools need careful consideration when they’re placed into the hands of students. While chatbots can efficiently handle transactional tasks, using them during formative skill-building years can hinder the development of foundational writing and critical thinking skills. Just as assessing basic computational skills becomes a challenge when calculators are used, evaluating students' writing and thinking skills becomes difficult when their words and ideas are computer-generated. Teachers will need to adapt and address this challenge, just as they would with any other disruptive technology. This involves educating teachers on how to effectively incorporate such tools into their teaching practices and ensuring that learning tasks and assessments are more individualized, focusing on skills that cannot be generated by a computer. As a School, we will continue to question what skills are the most valuable for 21st century students and future employees: Should we focus on blocking new technologies to protect traditional skills and values, or should we redefine skills and values to better prepare our students for a world where they must adapt to and utilize new technologies to enhance their productivity and efficiency? At Cape Henry, we’re proud of creating independent thinkers, and we expect the advent of AI to compel other schools to follow our lead by shifting their focus from the acquisition of information, words or ideas to teaching students how to package them in order to think more deeply and critically about the world around them. Like all other technology, educators must thoughtfully incorporate these tools into lessons, focusing on not just using the new fad, but thinking deeply about why a tool is being used and ensuring we teach students how to use it. At Cape Henry Collegiate, our focus on innovation through the construction of the Clarke+Ervin Center for Innovation and Performing Arts as well as in our most recent strategic plan insist that we fully embrace tools like ChatGPT and focus on learning how to

REFLECTING BACK ON MILESTONES IN CAPE HENRY'S LEGACY By Mrs. Julie Whitmore Scherrer, Major Gifts Officer

In 1924, Mrs. Helena Everett knew something needed to change. She wanted her four young daughters to get a well-organized, experience-rich and well-rounded education but Virginia Beach, at that time a sparsely populated and rural county, wasn’t offering many options. Undeterred, Mrs. Everett opened her own school in her own name and in her own house. The Everett School opened its doors with eight neighborhood children. It only took a few years for word to get around about the excellent education offered at the home on Cavalier Drive. Mrs. Everett offered a curriculum that included robust reading, writing and mathematical lessons, as well as French, art, music, theater, history, physical education (including horseback riding lessons) and field excursions. Enrollment continued to grow exponentially over the decades and by 1971, it became evident that something needed to change. That year, the Everett School obtained nonprofit status, elected its first Board of Trustees and changed its name to Cape Henry School. The School’s leadership recognized that a larger, more updated building was necessary for the School’s continued growth and success. Under the direction of board member and founder Mr. Andy Fine, the School bought a large plot of land on Mill Dam Road and construction began on the first of many new academic buildings. Fast-forward to the present day, and the little schoolhouse on Cavalier Drive is now Cape Henry Collegiate, the largest college preparatory independent school in Virginia Beach. Because of the School’s unwavering focus on meaningful and rich academic experiences, extracurricular and global education, and a dedication to innovation and exploration, Cape Henry Collegiate is well known and highly regarded throughout the greater Hampton Roads community. One hundred years since the Everett School began, it is once again time for something to change. In 2021, the Board of Trustees approved the fundraising and construction of a 50,000-square-foot building dedicated to innovation and performing arts. The Clarke+Ervin Center for Innovation and Performing Arts will house the Kramer Family Theater, and nearly a quarter of the building’s footprint will be dedicated to collaborative academic spaces for technology and engineering, including the Atherton Fabrication Lab. The idea of student artists and performers working with student engineers and designers to showcase each other’s work is a novel one, and one that will make our students better prepared for a collaborative future in the workplace. Our Trustees believed so much in this vision for the future of education that each of them made substantial contributions to bring the project to its current phase. The founding emphasis on meaningful and deep educational experiences will live on and expand beyond imagination in the Clarke+Ervin Center. Mrs. Everett and the dedicated Trustees and Heads of School who have taken the School this far can certainly be proud. Now, it is time for all of us to be a part of this tradition of positive change.

NEXUS GLOBAL STUDIES:

Summer of Discovery

Nexus Global Studies sent students all over the world during the 2022-2023 school year! More than 390 students traveled to six states and 12 countries, including the Netherlands, Botswana, Fiji, Vietnam, Belize and more. We are grateful for the dozens of chaperones who make these trips possible every year and we look forward to many more adventures in the future.

Vietnam and Cambodia In Vietnam and Cambodia, Upper School students visited Angkor Wat, watched the sunset from the top of the Ba Keng, cleaned up a beach in Ha Long Bay and learned about the role of Buddhism in the region.

Little Nexus: Florida Keys Nexus trip opportunities start in 5th grade with a trip to the Florida Keys, and expand to include many more states and countries.

Iceland In Iceland, Upper School students hiked the Solheimajokull glacier, went whale watching in Dalvik, and visited “Diamond Beach.” The beach got its name from the iceberg pieces that are brought back ashore by the waves, then polished into “diamonds” by the sand.

Botswana This year’s senior trip to Botswana featured encounters with lions, elephants and giraffes, a hike to Victoria Falls, and a canoe tour of the Okavango Delta.

MIDDLE SCHOOL AROUND THE WORLD BREAKFAST

By Mrs. Alexandra Oglesby, Director of Communications Cape Henry Collegiate’s mission to graduate globally aware citizens starts early – at breakfast, to be specific. This year, the Middle School brought back its Around the World Breakfast for the first time since the pandemic halted the annual tradition. The idea is simple: Students bring in traditional breakfast foods from other countries to share with their peers. The effect, however, is profound. “The breakfast makes students want to learn even more,” said Middle School teacher Mrs. Leigh Anne Clay. “They come back and say, ‘We wish we could have longer with it to learn even more about the culture.” Teachers are intentional about helping their advisory groups choose countries they may be less familiar with. This year, representation came from South Korea, Morocco, Italy, Pakistan and more. “There were a lot of new foods that I hadn’t tried before,” said 8th grader Coral Hobbs. “My parents have a lot of kimchi at home, but I didn’t try it until the breakfast at school. There were so many other foods I was trying, I just figured I would try that, too. I really liked it!” Coral and her classmate Henry Scolnick pointed out that food, whether familiar or new, can be the basis of international relationships. Coral noticed that foods like rice or grains were used around the world with slight variations, a fact she says “could get you talking,” and Henry believes expanding his palate will expand his world. “If you have a common taste, that’s how friendships start, because you have something you can talk about.”

LOWER SCHOOL GLOBAL PRESENTATIONS

What a year it has been for our Lower School students! Without ever leaving Cape Henry’s campus, they traveled to Antartica, Australia, Asia, South America, North America, Europe and Africa. Our unique Nexus Global Studies curriculum provides a gateway for students to learn about different cultures, histories and experiences of our world. The expectation is for students to graduate from the Lower School understanding the importance of diversity, multiculturalism and empathy for others by learning about different countries and continents around the world. We accomplish this by providing learning experiences that encourage authentic interactions with their selected continent. The Lower School journey to becoming globally and culturally aware in our increasingly interconnected world begins with our youngest learners beginning to develop a broad understanding of the differences between our community and communities around the world. The students and teachers in prekindergarten, kindergarten and transition delve into the continents of Antarctica and Australia with weekly integration of plants, animals, traditions, landforms and significant people from these areas. These beginning years lay the foundation to value and respect different customs, traditions, art, music and cuisines, leading to a richer and more inclusive understanding of the world. Our first and second grade Dolphins build upon their early literacy skills of reading, writing, communicating and researching while producing book keepsakes highlighting their acquired knowledge. In first grade, all of the students read “Same, Same But Different” by Ms. Jenny Sue Kostecki-Shaw. The students then created their own “Same, Same But Different” A-Z book comparing our corner of the world with their selected countries in Asia. Second graders took their acquired knowledge about South America and wrote and published a classroom book to showcase all that they have learned. While strengthening their communication skills, students had many opportunities to discover what connects us all around the world and to appreciate our different lifestyles, beliefs, and customs. The foundation we build in the early grades allows older Lower School students to dive deeper into our cultures here in North America, along with the multitude of countries in Europe and Africa. It also provides opportunities to interact and communicate with people from different backgrounds. The curriculum focuses on strengthening research, communication and technological skills while fostering opportunities to connect our students with experts who study, research and work across these continents. Our program strives to foster curiosity, cultural awareness and encourage a lifelong love of learning and exploration. As we prepare the Lower School students to enter into the Middle School years, our goal is to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate an interconnected world, foster appreciation for diversity, and promote a more inclusive and harmonious world in their journey to graduate as independent thinkers and globally aware citizens.

Cape Henry Collegiate’s Upper School is proud to welcome an outstanding group of rising 9th graders named this year’s Laila Serpe Scholars and Distinguished Merit Scholars. Vikram Goudar and Soham Pattnaik of Old Donation School will join Cape Henry Collegiate later this month with the distinction of Laila Serpe Scholars. Vikram is also a recipient of a Caroline D. Bradley scholarship, awarded to just 30 students across the United States to fund tuition at any high school or individual program in the country. As an eighth grader, Vikram had already checked off most Upper School mathematics requirements, including AP Calculus BC. He explores his passion for music by volunteering to play piano at Sentara Leigh Hospital, and once joined the Virginia Symphony Orchestra as a guest composer and performer. Soham is a two-time recipient of the President’s Volunteer Service Award for his more than 200 hours of community service for the Central Library’s Teen Advisory Group and other local organizations. He is also on the American Mathematics Competition’s honor roll, and advanced to 6th place at the National Middle School Chess Championships. Soham’s love of art and stargazing came together when NASA selected one of Soham’s artworks to display on its official website. “We’re excited to welcome Vikram and Soham to Cape Henry to grow as scholars and individuals,” said Head of School Dr. Chris Garran. “Academically, Vikram and Soham are as impressive as it gets, but they are also good people. Each impressed us with their commitment to community, a top priority at Cape Henry.” As part of the Distinguished Merit Scholars Program, additional scholarships were awarded to Cape Henry’s Devin Rai, Caroline Kenison, Nikoloz Kutelia, Matthew Todl, Dylan Lewis and Matthew McGuigan, as well as Ethan Jenkins and Sam Sachs of Old Donation School. “What stood out was not just their really impressive academic credentials, it was everything else they’ve done – volunteerism, community service, they had it all,” said Mr. Bryan Rudolph, an Upper School teacher who served on the selection committee. “I urge them to continue to take advantage of everything Cape Henry offers, because that’s unique about our School.” Each year, Cape Henry’s Laila Serpe Scholars and Distinguished Merit Scholars programs offer academic scholarships to a limited number of rising 9th grade students who are outstanding leaders and scholars. Scholarships last for the tenure of the student's enrollment in Upper School, provided the student continues to display distinguished levels of commitment and achievement. The distinguished scholars program is named for Laila Serpe, a brilliant Cape Henry student who passed away at the age of 12 in 2009. Laila exemplified the qualities of a community-minded scholar who took advantage of each opportunity that she encountered.

A Community Commitment to

SERVICE

While many reasons exist to celebrate and recognize Cape Henry Collegiate’s Class of 2023, I commend the decision made by nine of our graduates to enroll in a military academy or the Corps of Cadets. While Cape Henry has a deep tradition of graduating students who go on to serve our nation, we have never had this many in a single graduating class do so. These nine students chose to buck the current downward trend of active duty enlistment and service academy applications, and send a strong message that they care deeply about service. As someone whose father served in the United States Army, I have always held a deep respect for those among us who serve and lead in order to protect our nation and our allies. As a teenager, I remember my father telling me stories of his time serving in World War II. As an 18-year-old – the same age as most of our graduates – he landed on the beaches of Normandy on the fourth day of the D-Day invasion. His anti-tank unit fought its way through Europe and participated in the liberation of Pilsen in the current day Czech Republic, removing the Nazis even while the new threat of the Red Army made its way from the east. My father went on to attend Dartmouth College using the G.I. Bill when he returned. He married and had a family and a successful career, giving every indication he had left the war behind. Yet, even many decades later, when we traveled together in France, he had no interest in traveling north to Normandy to revisit its beaches. Similarly, he would never watch Saving Private Ryan. Clearly, the memories of the war and of lost friends stayed with him, and recognizing that helped me understand the many ways in which sacrifice manifests. Joining the Cape Henry community helped deepen that understanding and further my commitment, and the commitment of the School’s, to support our service families. Military children show incredible resolve. Often, Carson Poulos '23 with his mom they’ve traveled the country and the world, developing a confidence and perspective beyond their years and Kieran Poulos on "I" Day at the enriching our School community. Still, there is no doubt those benefits come at the great cost of repeatedly United States Naval Academy in moving away from friends and family to start over, and missing and worrying over deployed parents. In the late June. face of such sacrifice, it is imperative that Cape Henry show our support and appreciation for these families year after year. That is why, soon after joining the School eight years ago, I recognized Veterans Day as a schoolwide holiday and joined with my colleagues to establish the inaugural Veterans Day Breakfast and Program. The breakfast provides an opportunity for students and active duty or veteran parents and grandparents to gather, share stories and bond over generational military connections. At these programs, every branch of the United States armed forces is present, along with families who represent military branches from our allies in NATO and beyond. We are also proud of the work students and faculty have done to create our Military Kids Club. The club brings together students who deeply understand each others’ unique lives, giving them opportunities to talk and support each other. Older students mentor younger military children during meetings on the playground or with crafts and activities. They also showed pride in their families and allowed the rest of us to recognize them during Month of the Military Child by wearing special patriotic pins purchased by the School. Considering all of this, as the Head of School at Cape Henry, I feel immense pride in the decision made by the Class of 2023’s Lauren Aaby and Carson Poulos to attend the United States Naval Academy; Finn Cooke and George Sullivan to attend Virginia Military Institute; Mason Reid to attend the United States Military Academy West Point; Braden Aaby, Josh Old and Chris Parker to join the Corps of Cadets at Virginia Tech; and Connor Amet to join the Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M. Each shared with me different reasons for choosing this path. For some, it’s the natural evolution of a lifetime of volunteer service with charities or religious organizations. For others, this opportunity will give them a taste of military life and will allow them to better understand if it is a longer-term commitment that they would like to make. Still others have already made the decision and envision a career as an officer in the armed forces. Some are looking for structure or lessons in leadership. Most often, however, our students shared that they want to replicate the close-knit community and common sense of purpose they found here at Cape Henry. They also shared what they’re nervous about. From shaving their heads to limited sleep, they hold normal fears about what is to come. They recognize they will have less access to family and friends and a more regimented lifestyle. Yet, as their Head of School, I know these young leaders will face their fears, overcome them and go on to serve us well. We send them off with our best wishes and with deep gratitude for their rare willingness to serve and give back to our nation. Nine members of the Class of 2023 are enrolling in military academies or the Corps of Cadets.

Tristan Whitfield will graduate as the most decorated and arguably the most talented volleyball player to ever compete for Cape Henry Collegiate. With a powerful swing and masterful defense, Tristan is the complete package on the volleyball courts. Amassing over thirty kills per night, Tristan dominated every block he came against in his four-year tenure for the Dolphins. Seldom leaving the court, Tristan’s prowess gave the Dolphins extra confidence night in and night out, and he will be greatly missed on the court this fall. Tristan will continue his academic and athletic career in the Ivy League ranks, continuing his remarkable volleyball career as a member of the men’s volleyball program at Princeton University.

The leadership, dedication and resilience of Nolan Sharp will forever leave a mark on the Cape Henry Collegiate wrestling program. A mainstay on the mats from Lower School through a complex Upper School career, Nolan remained dedicated to perfecting his craft and continuing to instill a love for the sport in those around him. A 100-win caliber wrestler, Nolan was faced with adversity throughout his high school tenure. Despite losing two full seasons due to COVID, Nolan remained positive and captured the elusive TCIS tournament championship in his senior year, both individually and for the team as a whole. Nolan will continue his academic and athletic career as a member of the men’s wrestling program at Trinity College in the fall.

Departing Cape Henry Collegiate as one of the finest defenders in Dolphins history, Noa Denno has truly left his mark on the soccer program. Continuing a tradition of excellence in soccer, Noa made those around him better on the pitch. A calming presence on the backline with the ability to press forward to pressure opposing defenses, Noa is truly a force on the soccer field. He will be greatly missed on the Cape Henry Collegiate defensive line but will undoubtedly continue to grow as an athlete and soccer player. Noa will continue his academic and soccer career as a Bridgewater College Eagle.

Yoon Chae graduates Cape Henry Collegiate as one of the smoothest fielding infielders to have ever graced the diamond. A mainstay on the left side of the infield, his quick feet, smooth hands and high intelligence established him as one of the top infielders in the program’s history. Finishing his career with a .345 batting average, a .496 on-base percentage, and a remarkable walk-off grand slam, Yoon Chae will be remembered as a two-time TCIS and DI State Champion. Yoon Chae will continue his impeccable academic and athletic career as a men’s baseball team member at Amherst College.

Varsity baseball wrote a storybook ending to another historic season for Cape Henry Collegiate under the leadership of first-year head coach and VISAA DI Coach of the Year Mr. Chris Dotolo. Amassing a stunning 53-7 record over the past two seasons, the Dolphins once again boast the TCIS and DI VISAA Championships, standing among the best teams in the state. In 31 games played for the high-scoring Dolphins, varsity baseball scored 267 runs with an average of nearly 9 RBIs per game. The power-hitting program amassed more than 290 hits on the season, batting .352 with 21 total home runs. Varsity baseball was equally stellar on the mound, holding opponents to 81 runs and finishing the year with a total team Earned Run Average of 2.26. Adding to an incredible list of accomplishments, the Dolphins struck out 230 batters and limited opponents to a .207 Batting Average. Tanner Schaedel ‘24 definitively earned the TCIS, DI State, and All Tidewater Player of the Year honors, as juniors Andrew Hart, Parker Wight and Garrison Wight also earned All-TCIS and All-State recognition. Rounding out the honors for the Dolphins, Cooper Angilly '23 and Yoon Chae '23 each finished with All-TCIS recognition. The Dolphin community bids farewell to clubhouse favorites and program greats Angilly, Chae, Connor Pennell, and Jack Wickum. Still, it welcomes back a strong core of young student-athletes who will be led by returning seniors Schaedel, Hart, Peyton Friske and Nate Jensen in 2024.

Coed Crew Varsity crew continued to build a season to be proud of behind head coach Mr. Bob Alpigini in 2023, culminating in an appearance in the Eastern Virginia Scholastic Rowing Association Championship Regatta in April. Dedicating much of the season to perfecting the craft on the Cape Henry Collegiate ergometers, the young core of student-athletes have much to look forward to in the near future. Returning all but three of the 24-student roster, captains Jackson Baker '24 and Finley Nedelka '24 are set to recruit more numbers in preparation for the 2024 spring athletic season. Despite a lean, competitive schedule, the Dolphins continued to grow and improve behind the leadership of Baker, Nedelka and recent graduate Caroline Berman.

Under the leadership of head coach Mr. Jon Corliss, a young, budding roster of Dolphins led varsity golf to a 3rd place finish in both the TCIS and VISAA tournaments. A talented young team, the varsity golf squad scored under the 160 mark five times and averaged a remarkable 162 for the year. All-TCIS recipient Luke Gilman '25 and All-State recipient Alex Rai '25 have continued to progress throughout the season and are eager to bring elusive titles back to Cape Henry Collegiate. With the quartet of Gilman, Rai, Tyler Bass '25, and Luke Jacovides '25, the Dolphins have the makings of a tremendous roster of rising juniors in 2024. Molding a solid core of student-athletes, the Dolphins now bid farewell to seniors Harper Cox, Preston McCollum and Olivia Tamburino and look forward to the continued growth and potential of strong juniors and rising seniors Peter Kallgren and Madelyn Penner.

Boys Lacrosse R E C O R D

Varsity boys lacrosse finished 2023 strong despite a challenging start to the spring athletic season, with All-TCIS captains AJ Todl '24 and Jackson Keller '23 leading the Dolphins to a TCIS semifinal berth. After losing the first eight games of the season, the Dolphins kept a positive outlook, with Keller leading the charge and capturing a commanding 18-2 win over the Spartans of Steward School, followed by a 15-2 win over Norfolk Christian and an exciting 12-11 overtime victory against Norfolk Collegiate. Falling once in between, the Dolphins finished the regular season with a three-game winning streak. Up against the Oaks of Norfolk Collegiate in the semifinal berth and with the Dolphins desperately needing the score, CHC captured a 10-9 victory and capped the season off with a truly remarkable TCIS semifinal appearance. Varsity boys lacrosse graduates one of the best long-stick defenders in program history, All-TCIS captain Keller, but welcomes back All-TCIS captain AJ Todl to lead the Dolphins in the 2024 season.

With head coach Ms. Ashmore Standing at the helm, the Dolphins raced to a 14-win season, culminating in varsity girls lacrosse earning TCIS Runner-Up honors. Capturing 15 wins in her first season at the helm, Ms. Standing inherited a strong, steady group of student-athletes eager to learn the sport at a high level. The team opened the season with six straight wins, including two essential wins over Catholic High School and Nansemond-Suffolk Academy. Despite a dip in the middle of the season, the Dolphins came out more decisive, with Cape Henry Collegiate completing another six-game winning streak to finish the season and propelling the Dolphins into the conference championship. Showing great promise for the program's future, the Dolphins ultimately captured the TCIS Runner-Up trophy and a bid to the DII VISAA lacrosse tournament as the state's third seed. Five Dolphins returned with honors. Emma Hardy '24, Madeliene Keogh '24, and Mackenzie White '23 earned 1st Team All-TCIS and 1st Team All-State, with Berkley Compton '24 and Liza Pridgen '26 earning 2nd Team AllTCIS and 2nd Team All-State recognition. Despite graduating the steady Anna Gravitt, Grace Reynolds and captain White, the Dolphins are once again built for success in 2024 behind exceptional coaching and talent on the field.

Girls Soccer R E C O R D

All-State and All-TCIS senior captains Jillian Somers and Shannon Tadder led the Dolphins to a TCIS Runner-Up conclusion to the 2023 varsity soccer season behind head coach Mrs. Tina Lowry. Through a season of ups and downs, the varsity girls soccer team was led by tremendous senior talent supported by a youthful roster. It seemed each loss propelled the Dolphins to multi-game winning streaks, eventually netting 14 victories and a bid to the DI VISAA State Tournament. The team kicked off the year with a surprising loss to Manteo High School but rebounded with three-straight shutout wins while netting seven goals. After falling to a very talented Princess Anne, the Dolphins rebounded again for four straight wins. The pattern would continue as the Dolphins rounded out the regular season, hitting a stride entering the TCIS tournament. With tournament play underway, the Dolphins breezed through the first two rounds, scoring a remarkable twelve goals before capturing TCIS Tournament Runner-Up honors for the second consecutive season. The Dolphins earned several recognitions throughout the season, culminating in 1st Team All-State honors for Somers and 2nd Team All-State honors for Tadder. In conference play, Somers and fellow senior Emma Scott were named 1st Team All-TCIS, and Maya Harrington '26 and Tadder were named 2nd Team All-TCIS. Varsity girls soccer will continue to thrive as the Dolphins return Harrington along with rising seniors Sadie Jolly, Mary Turner Shipp, Olivia Keller and Kiersten Ruby.

Led by TCIS Coach of the Year Ms. Rebecca Stone, varsity softball played the most exciting season in recent memory. The Cape Henry Collegiate community knew this year would be notable for varsity softball from the outset, as the girls remained undefeated through the first four games of the season, including a commanding 10-run, 25-15 victory over Norfolk Academy. The Dolphins continued to trade wins and losses through the heart of the season, including a heartbreaking, one-run loss to Norfolk Collegiate. Rebounding with pride, the Dolphins proceeded to close out the regular season scoring 26 runs to the opponents' one. Earning a top seed in the TCIS tournament, the Dolphins earned a bid to the conference semifinals and established their reputation across Hampton Roads as a team with immense potential. For their efforts throughout the 2023 spring athletic season, the Dolphins collected five All-TCIS honors, with Ryanne Robertson '24 and Sydney Larkin '25 earning 1st Team All-TCIS recognition, and Marshall Daniel '25, Payton DeValda '26, and Maylen Johnson '25 earning 2nd Team All-TCIS recognition. The Dolphins graduated captain Sophie Berger, as well as Suhani Parmar and Linda Yang but continue to generate excitement about the returning roster in 2024.

A former Dolphin standout, head coach Mr. Conor Somers '16 led the varsity boys tennis to an eight-win season and poised the program for success in the near future. Off to a hot start to begin the nearly all-conference opponent schedule, the Dolphins won the first four matches of the season with 20 match wins and a mere eight losses. Minus the two conference losses, the Dolphins finished the season on an even more dominant note with 22 match wins to their opponents' six. Rounding out the year in the TCIS Tournament, the Dolphins finished as they entered the tournament and captured third place overall. Earning All-TCIS recognition for the year, captains Andrew McGuigan '24 and Carson Poulos '23 grabbed 2nd Team All-TCIS Doubles. McGuigan earned 1st Team All-TCIS Singles, and Poulos rounded out the Dolphin honors with 2nd Team All-TCIS recognition. Despite graduating Poulos and team favorites Johnny McGuigan and Jason Wang, the Dolphins are built for continued success in 2024 behind A. McGuigan and rising stars William Boone '27, Noah Malin '27, and Luke Whetstone '24.

TCIS Girls Coach of the Year Ms. Kacie Voeller and boys coach Mr. Howie Hodapp propelled varsity track and field to incredible heights, capturing a VISAA State Championship and TCIS Runner-Up trophy for the girls. Competing in a deep field of talent, the boys earned a respectable 14thplace finish in the DI VISAA tournament and a fourth-place finish in the TCIS tournament. The girls opened the season on a steady pace, grabbing three straight 3rd place team finishes and rounded out the season with a top-five performance. The boys continued to place within the top five with a 2nd-place finish to highlight the season. This year's historical team collected numerous honors and recognitions to round out the year. Elena Granados '24 dominated her way to TCIS Overall MVP, 1st Team All-State and 1st Team All-TCIS honors. Sebastian Whitfield '25 earned Honorable Mention All-State along with his 1st Team All-TCIS honors. Granados, Kaylah Walker '24, Saniya Rhem '25, and Marshall Daniel '25 teamed up to grab 1st Team All-State honors in the 4x100 Relay, with Ty Adamson '24 and Daniel also compiling AllTCIS recognition. The Dolphins graduate one senior in 2023, bidding farewell to longtime member Connor Amet, but welcome back a slew of record holders and Cape Henry greats Granados, Whitfield and Adamson, who are eager to compete for a TCIS and state title in 2024.

Mr. Jaffee met his wife in college at Stetson University, where they both played on the Division I tennis team. MR. KRISTEN MEREDITH MANUGO '09 Mrs. Kristen Meredith Manugo '09 and her husband Tyler welcomed their first-born son Michael Manugo on April 11. DR. COURTNEY CRIPPS '11 Dr. Courtney Cripps '11, DNP, CRNA, graduated from James Madison University with a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing in 2015 and later received her doctorate in nursing from Old Dominion University. Dr. Cripps passed the national board certification to become a certified registered nurse anesthetist. In August, Dr. Cripps will be working with Atlantic Anesthesia alongside other Cape Henry alumni. MR. CHRIS “ZEKE” TOBIN '15 Mr. Chris “Zeke” Tobin '15 married his CHC sweetheart Mrs. Angie Williams Tobin '15 in front of family, friends and several Cape Henry classmates. Mrs. Tobin is an intensive care neonatal nurse at Duke University Hospital, and Mr. Tobin is finishing his first year of law school at Duke Law. MR. CHANDLER AVERETTE '16 AND MR. CARSON AVERETTE '18 Brothers Mr. Chandler Averette '16 and Mr. Carson Averette '18 were spotted playing golf at Red Wing Golf Course with their dad Mr. Brent Averette on Father’s Day. MR. JACK WREN '16 For six years, Mr. Jack Wren '16 has come back to campus to help with the Cape Henry summer auxiliary programs. This summer, Mr. Wren can be found lending his time and talent to various summer camps, including the competitive chess camp.

MS. RILIEGH RAMIREZ '18 AND MR. GRAYSON PEARCE '18 CHC sweethearts Ms. Riliegh Ramirez '18 and Mr. Grayson Pearce '18 became engaged on May 27 after seven years of dating. The couple started to date in 2016 after being in Mr. Palmer's AP U.S. History class together. Ms. Ramirez has recently received her registered nurse status. MS. BRETT DUDLEY ‘19 Ms. Brett Dudley ‘19 is interning at Cape Henry in the alumni office, and she is excited to be back on campus and connecting with fellow alums. Ms. Dudley graduated summa cum laude from Old Dominion University in May, and she will attend graduate school in the fall at Regent University to pursue a master's in clinical mental health counseling. MR. ZACH GRANADOS '22 Class of 2022's Co-Salutatorian Mr. Zach Granados '22 helped the University of Michigan men's gymnastics team take second place in the NCAA Championships.

COAC H CASTL E B E R RY ' 03 TRACES PATH TO SUCC ESS BAC K TO C H C By Mrs. Margo Winans '89, Director of Alumni Relations Cape Henry Collegiate’s core values of community and opportunity live on in students long after they leave campus, compelling them to be good people and propelling them to great heights. This is the case for Mr. Jack Castleberry ‘03 who was a part of NCAA basketball history in March, helping lead the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights to their biggest win to date, beating the top-seeded team in the NCAA Tournament. Mr. Castleberry’s time at Cape Henry was a blueprint for his success. Academically, he was challenged in a manner that prepared him for the rigors of college at Virginia Military Institute (VMI). Personally, Cape Henry was the first school that felt like home to him. The sense of community was powerful, and he grew tremendously from his time and experiences at CHC. Mr. Castleberry fondly remembers his 12th grade government teacher, Mr. Samuel Sawaya, who pushed him to see other people's perspectives and to examine his own beliefs more thoroughly. Of course, Mr. Castleberry also spent a lot of time on the basketball court, playing the sport he’s loved since a young child, and bonding with his teammates and Coach Larry Ward, who made the biggest impact on him during his time at CHC. Mr. Jack Castleberry ‘03 bulldozes his way through the wall of defenders to add “Coach Ward pushed me outside of my comfort zone and showed me how points to the score in the 2003 TCIS Championship game. hard I would have to work to achieve my goals,” said Mr. Castleberry. Their relationship continued through college basketball at VMI, where Mr. Castleberry went from a walk-on to a scholarship player before graduating with a bachelor’s degree in economics and business in 2007, and into Mr. Castleberry’s own coaching career. Mr. Castleberry has relied on Coach Ward for advice during his time coaching at the University of Tennessee at Martin from 2007 to 2008, VMI from 2008 to 2012, Siena College from 2012 to 2014, and The Citadel from 2017 from 2022. The two coaches are still in touch today. Under Coach Ward’s influence, Mr. Castleberry excelled at basketball and left his mark on Dolphins athletics. His senior year, he was named first team All-TCIS and averaged 13 points a game. At VMI, he played guard and was a part-time starter his final two seasons, captaining the Keydets in the 2006-2007 season while averaging 1.5 points, 2.3 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.2 steals in 13 minutes per game. Mr. Castleberry still remembers the feeling of beating Catholic High School to win the TCIS tournament championship his senior year at Cape Henry. “That was a great team and a group of guys that were fun to be around. I loved playing in front of the home crowds,” said Mr. Castleberry, who is still known for breaking into the signature Dolphin Rumble cheer from time to time. “Cape Henry has so much community pride and I was honored to represent a place that I loved.” When looking at Mr. Castleberry’s 2003 senior page in the Compass Rose yearbook, it is clear he was destined for success and his mindset was on winning. He quoted basketball player, coach and broadcaster Mr. Jim Valvano, who said, "Don't give up, don’t ever give up,” and used player and coach Mr. John Wooden’s maxim, “Failure to prepare is preparing for failure.” Nine decades later, Mr. Castleberry’s Knights would go on to defeat Purdue, Mr. Wooden’s team back in the 1930s. “Our NCAA tournament run was a great experience and hearing the stories of people cheering us on from afar has been very cool.” Recently named the Knights’ new head coach, Mr. Castleberry feels grateful to the people who got him there and lucky to have the chance to continue creating opportunities within another unique community. After the historic win over Purdue, Mr. Castleberry is joined by his family, including his wife Sarah and two daughters, Harper and Amelia.

JOB SHADOW DAY

Cape Henry Collegiate’s Job Shadow Day was a great success thanks to the local businesses, medical professionals, military personnel, entrepreneurs and government officials who partnered with us. Tailored to the junior class, this one-day event could not happen without Cape Henry alumni, parents and other community members committing to provide incredible experiences for our students. Their willingness to give our students a day of real-world, practical experience will leave a lasting impression.

Eistla Lennquist Fixelius '24, Emma Hardy '24 and Monica Rudolph '24 spent the day in the Virginia Senate learning about politics and how the senate session operates, hosted by Mr. Bill DeSteph, Virginia Senator and parent of a CHC alum.

Cameron Olivieri '24, Luke Basta '24 and Sadie Jolly '24 spent the day with Tymoff+Moss Architect Mr. Michael Schnesker and got a behind-the-scenes tour of the new Clarke+Ervin Center for Innovation and Performing Arts project.

Chris Ashman '24 spent the day with Dr. Brad Nadelstein, a Veterinary Ophthalmologist and CHC parent, and got hands-on experience with various animals.

Marcus Viera '24, Daniella Volpe '24, Taylor Ervin '24, and AJ Todl '24 were hosted by CHC parent Mr. Scott Petersen at Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division. They were exposed to many disciplines of engineering and learned about combatant craft design and mission system integration. They interacted with a team of engineers and wrapped up the day with demonstration of a developmental hybrid electric unmanned surface vessel.

Ava Ehrenzeller '24, Caitlin Lindgren '24, Cate Dixon '24 and Savannah Thorpe '24 were hosted by Mr. Alex Martinez, a special agent and polygraph examiner. The students received in-depth, expert scientific explanations regarding forensics such as toxicology, forensic biology and firearms. They visited the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, where they sat in on a live hearing. The students capped off the day by visiting the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Norfolk Field Office.

Ryanne Robertson '24 traded her desk for a chance to teach for the day. She prepared a lesson plan and taught CHC middle school English students.

Sai Rhem '24 was hosted by endovascular neurosurgeon Dr. John R. Baker. He enjoyed his day observing surgery in support of his interest in biology and chemistry.

Sergio Antoun '24, Anderson Worley '24 and Olivia Keller '24 spent the day at the Office of the Commonwealth's Attorney with Mr. Scott Lang, deputy commonwealth's attorney, and Mr. Colin Stolle '88, commonwealth's attorney.

Josh Basta '24, Jack Furgeson '24, Kyle Krooner '24 and Luke Whetstone '24 experienced a day in the life of a US Naval Aviator in the Strike Fighter Community. Hosted by LCDR Joseph Camp, they toured the VFA-83 spaces, the ATC tower, VFA-87 hangar spaces and aircraft, and experienced the F-18 simulator.
