Community Builds a Nest
The NEST Project was a community event hosted at Cameron Art Museum on June 19, 2021 with artists Leatha Koefler and Brenda Brokke. The community came together to construct a giant nest from natural and recycled materials, and learn about local wildlife through the great people at Island Wildlife–Cape Fear. The nest will remain on the grounds at least through July.

Local Conservationist to Serve as Preserve Manager on Remote Pacific Atoll
After more than 10 years of working at Cape Fear River Watch, Kay Lynn Hernandez has accepted what she calls a dream assignment on the Palmyra Atoll in the Pacific, working for The Nature Conservancy as Preserve Manager of the Palmyra Atoll Research Station. It’s a four-month assignment, so upon her return in December she’ll be leading eco-tours through her newly-formed company, Wilmington Outdoor Adventures (www.wilmingtonoutdooradventures.com).
The Palmyra Atoll Research Station is a resiliency laboratory, so climate change is its research focus. Hernandez will be in charge of making sure visiting scientists from all over the world have all they need to do their research on site. “Living off the grid in one of the most remote locations on the planet and being surrounded by an abundant and healthy array of marine and terrestrial wildlife will be the adventure of a lifetime. I’m looking forward to sharing stories upon my return!” Learn more about the Palmyra Atoll at https://bit.ly/3iptQfJ.
