Let’s start by looking at how health care and health problems have progressed over the Let’s look at a typical patient who might be a 50 year old past 50 years. male working the customary 40 hour work week. He is feeling okay with no specific complaints. At this time the We know that chronic illnesses and cancers have and physician is able to ask specific questions such as “how’s continue to increase. The heartburn after eating necessitates a change in dietary habits and What is interesting to see is that in the initial period when possibly a gastroenterologist referral. After collecting this many people are living unhealthy lives, they believe they information, the physician starts to dig in even more to

HEALTHY TRENDS CONTINUED identify the possible reasons for these symptoms and early signs of disease. He asks more questions about lifestyle, specifically what the person eats on a regular basis, if he exercises and how often, about his sleep pattern and how he deals with the normal stresses in life. As a team, the physician and the patient talk about the use of tobacco, recreational drugs, prescription medications and other things that can influence the development of disease. All this occurs before the physician physically exams the patient. Once this conversation is done, the physician now has more information and more clues to help identify health risks. Next comes the actual physical examination. The physician might pick up a heart murmur or hear what is called a carotid bruit which indicates hardening of the carotid arteries affecting the supply of blood to the brain. He/she might hear wheezing or decreased breath sounds when listening to the lungs of a smoker and sends the person for a chest x-ray to be sure emphysema or lung cancer is not a concern. When he/she examines the abdomen of the patient, the physician feels an enlarged liver and then on a blood test finds very high cholesterol levels. He explains to the patient that a lot of fat in the blood accumulates in the liver which affects the function of the liver and even increases the person’s risk for liver failure and cancer. All this information is accumulated with the history, physical examination and some routine blood tests. At this point, the physician might recommend screening procedures such as a colonoscopy (to rule out colon polyps or cancers), a mammogram for females and other tests to screen for hidden illnesses or even acute cancers. The benefits go on and on. In the best case scenario when no abnormalities are found in the physical exam, the physician might simply be able to itemize for the person the health risk factors and then help him/ her develop and action plan to mitigate these risks. The overall goal is to help the person develop a healthy living lifestyle

- behaviors that will allow the person to live with less risk for chronic disease, cancer, disability and a shortened lifespan. All in all, this process enables the physician and the patient to develop a relationship - one that will hopefully keep the person from developing illnesses and instead live a long healthy life. That is the goal of the physician: to help keep the patient healthy. In addition, it is also the responsibility of the patient to do all he/she is able to do to stay well. One way to do this is by getting a routine checkup known as a wellness examination. My recommendation is for all those over 40 to do this at least every other year, annually if possible. As I tell my patients: if we do not check, we will not know if there is a problem. In my 25 years as a physician I have had the honor of doing thousands of wellness exams and have found early disease in hundreds of people who thought they were healthy. This to me is one of the best parts of medicine; since finding disease early, allows us to intervene in a positive way and to make a real difference in the life of the person. This is why I believe I have the best job in the world. Being able to help someone change their life for the better is amazing! To all those who have entrusted me and allowed me to be a part of their lives, thank you! Stay well my friends and please feel free to send comments and questions to Dr.Sal@Leememorial.org

Adding up homes sold and condos sold then dividing them into the number of agents active in this area gives us approximately 1 sale for every 16 agents. And, for some strange reason, we continue to see about 100 new agents every month entering the system here.

Internet websites for real estate provide a viable service. However, not all websites are the same. The delineating factor is understanding the initial accuracy of prices they report and how frequently the information is refreshed.
