FARMERS’ MARKET

Welcome Back and thanks for all the support. We have been busy, and the terrific weather has been welcome.

Vendors are filling in for season with more of them arriving every week. It is always wonderful to catch up with folks you have not seen for a while. Produce is also filling in with that local freshness that we all have been waiting for. Beautiful greens, cukes, avocados, oranges, sweet corn, tomatoes, and much more are now available.

To make it fun we add lots of music, the Calendar Girls, hometown community groups, and non-profits. If the weather cooperates, the market is always bustling.

During the season we host visiting vendors who come to us from different states with great products. This year we will have Bacon on a Stick from Pennsylvania, Zoe’s Gone Bananas, from Minnesota, with on-site made delicious banana bread, Yerba Mat Tea from Boulder Colorado, and 8th & Madison Cigar Co and Greensport Jerky from New York.

It looks like it is going to be a fun and busy season. We hope you get a chance to visit. We are here every Saturday from 8a-1p. We are located at SE 47th Terr. & SE 10th Pl., in downtown Cape Coral.

Since Thanksgiving is just around the corner, here is a holiday recipe from Fresh from Florida. For more recipes using local, Florida produce visit www.followfreshfromflorida. com.

Ingredients

1 ear Florida sweet corn, kernels removed

1 pound ground sausage

¾ cup carrots, chopped fine

¾ cup celery, chopped fine

1 medium onion, chopped fine

2 tablespoons fresh herbs (such as parsley, thyme, sage)

1 tablespoon all-purpose seasoning (your favorite)

3 cups cornbread, crumbled

1 cup vegetable broth

1 egg, beaten

Sea salt and fresh ground pepper, to taste

Preparation

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Preheat a large cast iron skillet (or any other oven-safe pan) over medium-high heat. Brown the sausage, then add corn, carrots, celery, onion, all-purpose seasoning and fresh herbs and sauté for 5 minutes or until vegetables begin to soften. Remove the vegetables from the heat and pour the mixture into a large bowl. Add the crumbled cornbread and toss to combine. Add vegetable broth until mixture is moistened. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper if needed before adding the beaten egg. Pour the mixture back into the cast iron skillet and bake for 45 minutes or until golden brown. Serve warm.

JR LEADERSHIP CAPE CORAL

One of the program goals is to provide supplemental learning possibilities to students interested in developing leadership skills before leaving their high school years. Another goal is to share with the students the many career possibilities in the local area.

Focus is on preparation for their future by learning about their local community. This is done in session programs filled with forums, specialized tours, and education by local business and community leaders. Students will examine local and relevant community issues at a mock City Council meeting. They will learn about the unique history of Cape Coral and meet local government officials. They will tour local television stations, radio stations and a local newspaper where they have an opportunity to learn about careers in media. They might even be on TV? They will tour a local hospital, speak with medical professionals and learn about medical careers. They will spend time learning about careers in public safety and law by visiting the Police & Fire departments, the Juvenile Justice Center and local courts.

The students are also guided in developing business, communication and networking skills. They will spend one day learning to market & brand themselves for college and job applications and developing social networking skills. Students will also visit two local schools and pair with

teachers to teach a lesson to elementary and middle school students, as they explore the career possibilities in education. These are just some of the areas that the students will experience in this year’s class.
