HEALTHY TRENDS WHAT IS HEALTH Salvatore Lacagnina, D.O. Vice President of Health & Wellness, Lee Memorial Health System

Risk factors for poor health include a sedentary life, not eating the recommended 5-9 servings of vegetables and fruits daily (mostly vegetables), smoking cigarettes, not getting 7-8 hours of quality sleep nightly, having a lot of unmanageable stress, not having good social/ spiritual support, having borderline high blood pressure, cholesterol or glucose in the blood, to name a few. Then we get into the functional risk factors such as shortness of breath with minimal exertion as well as exercise intolerance. I am always concerned when a 50 year old tells me they are unable to climb a few flights of stairs or walk briskly without becoming short of breath. When a person describes a lifestyle that is functionally limited, I am concerned that this person is not presently healthy; and, that he/she will be unhealthy with disease as the years go on.

Now that the Lee Memorial Health System name has changed to “Lee Health”, I have again been giving a lot of thought to the definition of health. I have asked many audiences “what is health?” and have gotten an array of answers, most often: health is the absence of disease. I always follow up that answer with: “Is health really just the absence of disease or is it much more than that?” I think many people do believe health is the absence of disease since there are so many in America who, by various criteria are unhealthy; while those that currently do not Therefore, in defining health we really should be looking have a disease, believe they are healthy. at function and how well a person is aging as he/she advances in years. The foundation for the health living action plan is nutrition, physical activity, quality sleep, stress The goal of the physician and other health care providers management, social and spiritual support, productivity is to help people become and stay healthy. It is that and a sense of belonging. I always also include giving simple. The hard part is doing it and this is where a team back and paying it forward to remind others, as well as effort is required. The team includes each individual in myself, that there are always other individuals who have a combination with his/her physician/health care provider, tougher life than we do and we should look to help these as well as the person’s family and friends. We all are able folks when we cross paths with them. to help one another become and stay healthy since we all influence one another. An easy way to think about healthy eating is: eat real food, not too much and mostly plants (thanks to author There is a saying: “you become who you associate with” Michael Pollan for this statement). With exercise, find and I believe this is true. If you associate with people who every excuse to be active. As such, if you want to be healthy, make sweat the small stuff! friends with healthy people. However, this does not mean you should abandon all your unhealthy friends. The point In summary, think of health certainly as the absence of is – if you want to attain a certain characteristic, you have disease but also as a state of functioning which allows you to know what that looks like. If you want to be healthy, to do all you want with abundant energy, vitality and a you have to see it in action. sense of purpose. In my practice I do a lot of wellness exams and at the end of the visit I can tell the individual if he/she is currently healthy, if he/she has risk factors for disease or if he/she has a diagnosis (a defined disease). The fewer the risk factors, the easier it is to tell a person he/she is healthy. When I hear a person describe their lifestyle noting how active they are with enthusiasm and energy in their eyes and in their voice, I know this person is healthier than a person who portrays the opposite.

I believe that health is a journey rather than a place. We are all striving to get somewhere; and, when it comes to health, I think we are all striving and working to get to that place of good and even great health. When we look at it from this perspective, we see that this is something we continue to work towards since we can all always be healthier. Stay well my friends and please feel free to send comments and questions to Dr.Sal@LeeHealth.org

REAL ESTATE TRENDS in Cape Coral. Ireland is a country that has never lost a shared sense of community. Even in towns and cities, the pace of life is gentler here; people stop to chat in the streets, they are happy to give directions to tourists, they are glad you have come and they are sorry to see you go. Ireland has much to offer everyone. From storybook castles to magnificent gardens, wide open spaces to the bustle of international cities, breathtaking natural scenery to man made megalithic structures, Ireland opens her arms and welcomes you to explore her ancient sites, traverse her green fields and discover her treasures. The scenery is gorgeous, the weather is mild (though changeable), there is a rich cultural heritage to discover, and a wealth of music and stories to share. But the real joy of Ireland lies in the friendliness of the people, the warmth of their welcome, and the ease with which they make you feel at home.
