CHAIRMAN TRENDS BECOMING THE NEW CHAIRMAN Brett Bisbe 2016 Chairman

As your time to become chairman of the board gets closer and closer you start pulling in all the things you have seen and learned over the years of being involved with the board. What other chairman have done, what the culture of the board will be and of course how you think the membership will benefit during your tenure as chairman to name a few. Then the day comes to stand in front of the board, who also happens to be a room full

of your mentors, friends and biggest critics most of whom have been in business longer than you have been alive (in my case anyway) to show them what you’re made of. Any leadership abilities I thought I had will certainly be tested this year. I should be concerned, but going through leadership and advanced leadership; taking advantage of the first hour free program and just being involved has given me access to some great business leaders and mentors that I can lean on anytime if I get stuck. This chamber has a ton to offer any business if you are willing to jump in, it has returned my membership dollars tenfold over the years. With all of that said our chamber is ever changing in what it offers to our members and I always welcome new ideas especially over lunch. Your Chamber of Commerce of Cape Coral together with the Gulf Coast Symphony hosted the 3rd Annual Taste of the Cape on February 21 at Four Freedoms Park.

The event, which is a major fundraiser for our Education Committee’s scholarship program as well as music education programs for the symphony, hit record attendance numbers this year at an estimated 10,000 people.

REAL ESTATE TRENDS LOST IN PARADISE OR PARADISE LOST?

We still experience a number of folks calling for homes under $100K and that just doesn’t exist. SO WHAT’S THE CAUSE, DOC?

Over the years I have had many patients diagnosed with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, Alzheimer’s, reflux, chronic low back pain and many other ailments.

Occasionally the patient will ask “so what’s the cause?” With this question the individual has gotten to the heart of the matter.

Current medical care usually proceeds as follows: a person is diagnosed with high blood pressure or another disorder and is most often treated with a medication. The time lapse between diagnosis and the written prescription being handed to the person is short; and, the amount of time spent trying to identify the cause of the high blood pressure or other medical problem is limited. This appears to be one of the major realities of medical care today. We often times do not look hard enough to identify the cause; then, when found, not enough is done to remove the cause. We simply treat the symptom.

Gastrointestinal reflux is another great example. I loathe the commercial for the purple pill. The heavy set actor in the commercial eats all the wrong foods and then recommends to the audience to take this purple pill to relieve the heartburn symptoms. Maybe he should stop eating the foods that cause the symptoms? Even more irresponsible is the fact that this commercial makes light of GI reflux which can be a potentially life threatening condition. Chronic heartburn means stomach acid is continually moving up into the esophagus where it is not supposed to be. This exposes the lining of the esophagus to acid which over time erodes the lining of the esophagus increasing the risk of bleeding and cancer formation. When acid refluxes up into the back of the throat, it can be inhaled into the lungs causing wheezing as well as other pulmonary complications. Often times when this occurs, the person is prescribed an inhaler medication to deal with the wheezing.

Once again, more medication is prescribed to treat the complications of an unhealthy lifestyle. Why not just stop eating the foods which cause the reflux so the GI problem, as well as the lung problems, are solved?

The above examples make it apparent that we must identify the cause of a health problem in order to truly treat it. Treat the cause, not just the symptom. For most health problems, the common denominator is inflammation. I have written about this in many past News-Press articles and have talked about this extensively in my public presentations. From heart disease, to Alzheimers, to arthritis, inflammation is the problem.

If we look at cardiovascular disease, we know that inflammation of the inner lining of the arteries starts the process of plaque formation which eventually leads to obstruction of blood flow. Over time as this worsens, the reduction in blood flow decreases the function of the organ it supplies; and, if a piece of this plaque ruptures, it flows downstream and blocks all blood flow causing a heart attack, a stroke or another serious circulatory emergency.

This process creates several more problems which the health care provider and patient then have to deal with. First off, the reason for the health problem (the high blood pressure) is not identified. Secondly, the medication prescribed provides not only some relief from the high blood pressure, but it also brings along side effects. Essentially, there are no medications without side effects. Even an aspirin has side effects. Therefore, the automatic prescription brings benefits as well as potential complications. Recently, the leadership as Keiser University-Fort Myers challenged the faculty to research and present, using a team format on these six different topics related to teaching: passion, immersion, rapport, analysis, teamwork, and enthusiasm. The exercise generated both excitement and discomfort within faculty. Perhaps because presenting in front of peers is more uncomfortable than presenting in front of students. The benefits of the exercise included faculty engagement, faculty networking, team-building, practice in research, and practice in public presentation. What was amazing was the lively and valuable discussions that followed each presentation.

The exercise represents a transformational leadership process, where leaders stimulate followers to engage in research and problem-solving. These opportunities improve teaching processes, while inspiring teachers to perform beyond the status quo. It is worth pondering whether we do enough as leaders and managers to stimulate our teams to engage in work at levels beyond the normal transactional relationships, where followers receive

remuneration for merely meeting the expectations of the leadership.

The benefits of engaging in these exercises include; improving organizational commitment, developing employees beyond what they might have thought possible, and to helping to provide intrinsic rewards, such as greater self-confidence, and self-actualization. Additionally, these rewards help employees place the needs of the organization before their own.

If your team members have not had a great deal of experience in unstructured decision-making, start them off with problems where the quality of the decision may not be too important and where they have time to ponder input and evaluate ideas. As the team gains greater competencies in the area of unstructured decision-making, continue their development by providing them with problems that have greater importance. Perhaps, reducing the amount of time which they have to generate a solution. Leaders and managers who take their people to higher levels of critical thought, help followers grow, while providing the customers they serve, with better products and services. This creates greater success for all.

A lack of follower engagement is common in many small businesses, as it is difficult for the leader/manager to devote time to work on the business and follower development.
