Q’s WORLD ARE YOU READY?

t is June and officially Hurricane season, so this month’s article is about disaster planning. Are you prepared? Not that I want to anger the Hurricane Gods, but it has been relatively quiet since Charley. Former Fire Chief Van Helden used to say, “It is not, If, It’s when.” Getting your business prepared is more than just getting supplies, it is about inspecting your building structure and making necessary repairs, it is about

training your employees concerning their activities and importance to recovery, it is about what you do after you survive the storm, it is about updating or creating a plan. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has a pretty cool online program called the Business Continuity Planning Suite. The Suite is designed to be user friendly and scalable for optimal organizational use. It consists of three main components: Business Continuity Planning training, an automated Business Continuity Planning and Disaster Recovery Plan generator and a self-directed exercise for testing an implemented Business Continuity Plan. What we learned from Charley was we were really good at preparing, but we needed to perform better “after-the-storm”side of things. As many as 80 percent of the businesses that suffered damage in Hurricane Andrew never opened again. Similar numbers were realized in parts of Charlotte County after Charley. It could take a community up to five years to recover from a direct hit from a major storm. Be prepared; do not let a Hurricane or other disaster, natural or manmade to put you out of business.

MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR MEMBERSHIP DURING THE SLOW SEASON!
Annette Carrasquillo, LAI Design Associates 2014 Chairman
A
s we enter the “slow” period for many businesses in our community it is especially important to remember the resources that are available within your Chamber to promote your business. For many of us, the summer months can be challenging as the northerners have gone home, traffic has slowed and families go on vacation. Networking within the Chamber can open new doors and bring new opportunities to your business. These opportunities are available through the General Membership Luncheon, Business Card Exchanges, Business After Hours, Ribbon Cuttings and special events, such as the upcoming Men’s Power Networking at Hammond Stadium and the Key West Express Trip! The Chamber also provides each member the opportunity to display their business cards or brochures at the Welcome Center to promote their business to visitors that stop there each and every day. Our City continues to grow and with that the Chamber’s membership is also growing. New businesses are moving into the Cape each day and we continue
to see many great places in our City where we can enjoy the lifestyle of living in paradise. From water parks to the beach, the new Boathouse, as well as many new restaurants throughout the City, the shopping that is available and our very own indoor farmers market at the Shops at Surfside each week. There is so much to do! I hope to see many of you at one of these locations enjoying your summer and having fun!

HEALTHY TRENDS
DON’T MISS THE SYMPTOMS
Salvatore Lacagnina, D.O. Vice President of Health & Wellness, Lee Memorial Health System
O
ften times symptoms develop that many of us assume are simply benign or related to getting older. This is not always the case and in some situations can be a serious mistake. Let’s look at several examples. Chest pain is often assumed to be benign and related to such things as heartburn or a musculoskeletal problem but more often is related to poor blood supply to the heart. The pain a person experiences in the chest when they exert themselves is often times the result of clogged arteries that supply the heart with blood and nutrients. When the physician is listening to the description of these symptoms, the patient usually describes a crushing pain in the chest as if an elephant is sitting on the chest. The pain may be in the middle of the chest or on the left side but could also radiate to the back, up to the jaw or down the left arm. These pains can be associated with shortness of breath and sometimes palpitations (a sense of fluttering in the chest). If the heart rhythm becomes irregular because of the improper blood supply in addition to palpitations, the individual may also feel dizzy or lightheaded and could even faint. Since cardiovascular disease is the number one killer and number one cause of health problems in this country, we need to pay special attention to the symptom of chest pain and absolutely not assume it to be a benign symptom until we have a clear diagnosis. The recommendation is to call 911 if you are having any chest pain or symptoms as described above. It is most important to travel to the hospital by ambulance and not to ask someone to take you in the car. The reason being that if you are having heart problems, the emergency medical technicians can administer medication, oxygen and other treatments that would be helpful while you are on the way to the emergency room. The treatments that you can get in the ambulance can indeed be life-saving. Similar to the symptoms associated with heart disease as described above, it is important that you do not dismiss symptoms that could be caused by what is now termed a “brain attack”. The symptoms to look out for would include slurred speech, a sudden decrease in vision, drooping on one side of the face, difficulty moving an arm or a leg, problems with balance, or numbness on one side of the body. The symptoms associated with a brain attack or a stroke usually come on rather suddenly and are very obvious. Similar to a heart attack, a brain attack is also an acute problem with blood flow. Something causes a sudden interruption of blood flow to a particular part of the brain and the above symptoms develop. Also similar to a heart attack, quick treatment is absolutely essential and can be life-saving when you are having a stroke. This is why the recommendation is the same. If you are having any of these symptoms, call 911 immediately. In this situation also, going to the hospital emergency room by ambulance is the best course of action. The ambulance professionals can be in contact with the emergency room physician and medications and other treatments can be administered while you are in route to the emergency room. Unfortunately I have seen several patients over my career die in the car being transported to the emergency room when they insisted to their spouse or significant other not to call 911 and instead to drive them to the emergency room.
This is a tragic situation that is avoidable. Osteoporosis sounds like a much more benign disease as compared to heart attacks and strokes but bone fractures as a result of osteoporosis can create chronic pain and disability. Pain in a joint that occurs as a result of minimal trauma might be the result of osteoporosis. A close friend of mine recently developed severe and unrelenting pain in the foot after minimal trauma. I convinced her to have an x-ray and she indeed had a fracture. Although she is younger than 50, I recommended she have a bone density test since I suspect she probably has osteoporosis. My mother also recently developed severe back pain in relation to coughing during a bout of pneumonia. Again I recommended an x-ray and she too had a fracture. But my mother’s fracture was in the spine and caused 40 days of excruciating pain before she had a procedure to reverse the fracture (called a kyphoplasty). The message here is: do not disregard the symptoms of a bone fracture (severe acute pain, or chronic mild-to-moderate but localized pain) as this might be the result of an osteoporotic fracture. Let’s think next about the symptom of memory loss. When this occurs slowly over time, it might be a symptom of Alzheimer’s or what is called mild cognitive impairment. Many people believe that memory loss is a function of aging but this is not necessarily true. Many folks in their 80’s and 90’s have great mental function. So when memory loss becomes obvious, it should be evaluated just like any other symptom. The medical work up for many of these conditions is extensive but you should continue to investigate until a diagnosis is made. This is the one way to get the treatment correct. Not having a diagnosis and treating the symptom can be useless and sometimes harmful. The symptom of a chronic cough might be related to a lung problem such as pneumonia, asthma, emphysema, or a persistent viral/bacterial infection. It might also be due to a gastrointestinal problem such as reflux (chronic regurgitation of acid from the stomach into the esophagus); and it also might be due to sinusitis with chronic post nasal drip. Medications are also known to cause a chronic dry cough (specifically some blood pressure medications called Ace Inhibitors). Another common symptom is chronic fatigue and this could be the result of many illnesses including congestive heart failure, anemia, low thyroid, depression or simply sleep deprivation. It could also be the side effect of a medication you are taking so be sure to review all medications with your physician or health care provider to ensure an accurate diagnosis. Last for this article but certainly not least is the problem of rectal bleeding. This is a common problem often quickly associated with hemorrhoids. Realize this is a sign and not a symptom of a health problem. Rectal bleeding might be due to hemorrhoids but also might be caused by a bleeding polyp, colon cancer, or different types of colitis/ inflammation of the colon. It might also be due to bleeding disorders or even a tear in the lining of the rectum. Rectal bleeding should never be assumed to be due to hemorrhoids until a colonoscopy is done to rule out all other common and uncommon reasons for bleeding. Blood tests are also helpful to rule out bleeding disorders and anemia. In summary, pay close attention to all symptoms that develop and discuss these with your physician or health care provider. Before your visit, sit down and write out all the symptoms you are having. List when they occur; if they are associated with an activity such as eating; list what makes the symptoms better and worse; what you are doing when they occur and if you do anything in particular to get the symptoms to resolve. This information will be very helpful to your physician as he/she works through the details and develops a diagnosis. Once the symptoms are related to a diagnosis, then a proper treatment plan can be discussed and implemented. Stay well my friends, please be sure to send any questions or comments to Dr.Sal@ Leememorial.org.

The final tier of leadership education is Cape Coral Community Trustee program, which is by invitation and helps participants discover areas where they can assume community leadership roles. Today, our leadership graduates are contributing to vital areas of the community such as; leadership roles in government from the City Council to the State of Florida, community organizations like American Cancer Society, Easter Seals, and Junior Achievement, and leadership with our largest employers. It is not uncommon for our leadership graduates to see the value and feel the need to pass along the gift of leadership by participating in our Cape Coral Jr. Leadership program. Without a doubt the Chamber of Commerce of Cape Coral has one of the most comprehensive leadership programs in Florida.

LYNNIE GUZMAN l News-Press l 2011 Leadership Cape Coral opens doors and open your eyes to the community around you. It lays out the assets and the opportunities for you in a way no other investment of time and money could do. I have seen it change the lives of many people and I know it has changed my life forever and that is why I am still involved in Leadership Cape Coral today. The program continues to pay benefits to me, my family, my business and my community. JOE MAZURKIEWICZ l BJM Consulting l 1993 Leadership Cape Coral helped save my life! During health day, a physician was telling us that heart attacks don’t always happen in the most common perceived way–chest pain and numbness in the left arm. I remembered that comment when the following week I had a heart attack (throbbing in both arms just below my elbows and no chest pain). I was rushed to the hospital. B. LCEC hasn’t raised electric rates in nearly 5 years! The increase on your upcoming electric bill is due to a tax imposed by the City of Cape Coral. LCEC customers in Cape Coral will notice a change in their electric bill beginning October 1, 2013. Cape Coral City officials recently levied a public service tax of 7 percent that will be added to monthly electric bills. The new tax will be displayed on your LCEC bill as a separate line item so it can be easily identified. LCEC is required by law to collect the tax from business and residential customers who purchase electricity in Cape Coral. LCEC will deliver funds to the City similar to how Cape Coral franchise fees are delivered, which are also collected through electric bills. This new tax will be used to fund the City’s general operations. To calculate the amount the monthly public service tax will add to your electric bill, visit www.capecoral.net and utilize the PST Calculator. Please refer any questions regarding the Cape Coral public service tax to the Cape Coral Citizens’ Action Center, 239-574-0425. www.lcec.net • 239-656-2300

Caring for Kellen fundraiser 2014
Kellen was welcomed into this world on January 18, 2014. At 9 weeks old, he was hospitalized and diagnosed with a rare kidney disorder, Congenital Nephrotic Syndrome, which affects only 1 in 40,000. Kellen is currently on hemodialysis four times a week, has already had 4 surgeries, 6 blood transfusions, and has been on and off the breathing tube and sedation, which has led to a tracheotomy. He has lost all kidney function but cannot be put on the donor transplant list until he meets the weight requirement of 22lbs. The genetic mutation that Kellen has could lead to tumors, so Kellen will have his kidneys removed soon to prevent any tumors from growing and affecting other organs. Baby Kellen will remain at Miami Children’s Hospital until he is ready for a transplant, which at minimum, will be a year. After his transplant, he will remain at Miami Children’s Hospital for recovery for 6 weeks, and will require many medications and monthly follow up doctor appointments in Miami.
