hat an amazing week this

has been!

It started with the filming of our commercial spots for the 3rd Annual Save Our Summer – Feed The Cape food drive for The Cape Coral Caring Center. The 2015 drive kicks off on June 9th at Rumrunners at 6 p.m. and we hope it will be bigger than even.

Since its inception, SOS has raised more than $35,000 and collected more than 25,000 lbs. of food for our families in need during the summer months. This year, our community partners at the Cape Coral Construction Industry Association, FOX4, Spiro & Associates, Rumrunners, High Fidelity Studios, Dixie Roadhouse and The News-Press hope to grow those numbers even more.

Please join us and make a difference in your community.

Next was the MDA Lock up. Yes, they locked me up, and while I am sure there are some who may have wanted to keep me locked up, I was happy to donate my time on behalf of the chamber alongside a room full of local business owners and residents who each took some time out of their day for such a worthy cause.

It is truly an honor to live and work in a community that cares so much about its residents. You often hear that Cape Coral is the largest small town there is and it is so true. We proved that just a few weeks ago with the Cape Love event to benefit James Rosso, the young man who was recently hit while jogging.

In a matter of two hours, Cape Coral came together and raised more than $12,000 to help assist with James’ medical care. Beattie Development along with your Chamber of Commerce of Cape Coral, the Cape Coral Construction Industry Association, Elmer Tabor and the Big John’s/Cape Coral Town Center business owners put this event together in about two weeks proving the true power of what a community can do.

You often hear us state the Chamber’s mission to promote and serve business and community. As an organization, we support this philosophy and encourage our members to do the same.

If you want to get more involved in your community, whether it’s by volunteering through the chamber, one of our non for profit members or simply joining a community effort like the Cape Love event, please give us a call. We would be happy to point you in the right direction, it’s great for the community and can be a great way to make business connections.

ANTIBIOTICS INCREASE THE RISK OF BREAST CANCER – REALLY?

ecently I read an article in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) which discussed the use of antibiotics in relation to breast cancer and I initially wondered what the mechanism was. How is it that taking an antibiotic can increase the risk or incidence of breast cancer?

Previously I have written about the intestinal “microflora” – this is the bacteria that are in the GI tract. We know that these bacteria interact with our physiology in very specific ways that keep us healthy or increase our risk for disease and cancer. We also know that many of the things we do influence the types of bacteria in our GI tract including what we eat, the medications we take, the environmental toxins we expose ourselves to, and the stress in our lives.

The thought that antibiotic use might increase the risk of cancer was proposed decades ago and since then several mechanisms have been brought forth: antibiotics are known to affect the metabolism of Phytochemicals (plant nutrients) producing compounds that protect us from cancers; antibiotics might alter the metabolism of estrogens resulting in a lower level of estrogen and thus a decreased risk of cancer; and antibiotics might affect the function of the immune system creating inflammation in the body and thus increasing the risk of cancer because of a suppressed immune system.

The JAMA article reviewed a study in Finland in which the investigators found that women younger than 50 years of age who reported antibiotic use for urinary tract infections had an elevated risk of breast cancer. The article highlighted the importance of understanding this association (antibiotic use and risk of breast cancer) because of the high incidence of breast cancer in the USA and the widespread use of antibiotics (often times unnecessarily).

Many individuals suffering from viral infections use antibiotics in an attempt to eradicate the infection; but we should know that this is ineffective since antibiotics only work on bacteria and not on viruses. The use of antibiotics in this situation increases the risk of resistant bacteria that will be harder and harder to treat if this behavior continues. Gonzalez reported that in the USA over 22 million prescriptions were written in 1995 alone for antibiotics for nonbacterial acute respiratory infections.

When we look at the incidence of breast cancer, we see that the statistics show that it is the most frequently diagnosed malignancy (after skin cancer); and it is the second leading cause of cancer mortality (death) in women. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide with more than one million cases diagnosed annually.

It is important to understand that there are many things that increase a woman’s risk for breast cancer including: age, level of education, early onset of menstruation and late menopause, the number of pregnancies, weight (being overweight increases the risk), hysterectomy status, family history of breast cancer in a first degree relative, certain abnormalities on a mammogram, as well as the use of oral contraceptives and post menopausal hormones.

In the sited study the increase in the risk of breast cancer was noted for all classes of antibiotics; and the greater the number of days taking antibiotics also increased the risk as did the greater number of different antibiotics that were used over a certain time period.

Several other researchers came to the same conclusion about antibiotic use and the risk of breast cancer; therefore, given this positive correlation it was recommended that we take more caution in the use of antibiotics for women especially during the sensitive times for breast development and breast change (adolescence, pregnancy and menopause). This means we should use antibiotics even more judiciously during these times when breast changes normally occur in women. We must be sure that an antibiotic is necessary and if so, use it for the shortest time required to kill the bacterial infection.

Could it be that a weakened immune system in a woman with an infection predisposes to breast cancer? Certainly this is a possibility as pointed out in this study; and because of this the authors recommended we do more research and investigation into this area. In the meantime all physicians and health care providers who write prescriptions for antibiotics must discuss all risks with their patients. Before taking an antibiotic all individuals need to understand the benefits and the risks. The indication for using an antibiotic needs to be clinically apparent and the benefits should outweigh the risks.

Since most antibiotics are given orally they affect the microflora (the normal bacteria in the GI tract) and we need to account for this and combat the negative effects antibiotics have on the GI tract.

Prebiotics and probiotics are thought to be helpful after using an antibiotic in attempt to repopulate the GI tract with the normal bacteria that keeps us healthy.

When this does not occur, the GI tract becomes flooded with “pathogenic” bacteria – the types that make us sick with diarrhea, abdominal pain and bloating. Antibiotic induced “colitis” or inflammation of the lining of the gut is a serious health problem and can lead to hospitalization. When the lining of the GI tract becomes inflamed, it is unable to function normally and this can result in bloody diarrhea, excess loss of water in the bowel movements resulting in dehydration, and the loss of essential vitamins and nutrients. The growth of pathogenic (disease producing) bacteria in the gut is becoming a more common problem as we continue to use antibiotics incorrectly.

The entire field of the “microbiome” (which is the gastrointestinal environment in which these bacteria live) is so exciting and if the reader is interested in understanding more, I recommend the review article in the August 2012 edition of Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology entitled “The function of our microbiota: who is out there and what do they do?” This article details the key role the microbiome plays in many metabolic, nutritional, physiologic and immunologic processes. This means the bacteria in the gut are involved in metabolism, how we use nutrients, how the body functions overall and how well our immune system works to keep us healthy. It is amazing to understand how many areas of health are affected by what is thought to be an “overlooked organ.” Yes, the microbiome can be considered an essential organ, as essential to health as is the heart, kidneys and liver. So we need to protect it, support it and allow it to do its job properly.

In summary this all gets us back to how we treat ourselves and how we make health a priority. As an action plan from this article, be sure to discuss the pros and cons of taking an antibiotic with your physician or health care provider since evidence shows that this can affect your risk of getting cancer. Do all you can to protect yourself from cancer and chronic illness to live a better quality and a longer life!

The ever-shrinking Inventory of single family homes For Sale continues to shrink. The ever-increasing price of homes For Sale also continues to increase. For Sold Homes, this month shows a noticeable decrease in units sold but with a healthy increase in median price.

Being from out of state, they felt they knew more about this market then anyone here, especially since they read all about how to buy real estate in several internet articles. They offered to buy on a 90 day contingency for selling their home up north (Minnesota) for 15% less than the listed price. We let their offer expire and gently told them that the sellers had turned down

higher offers than theirs. Smugly they told us that they would check back in a month to see if we would reconsider after the house hadn’t sold. When they called, they were told that the home was in negotiations and if they had any interest, they had about 2-3 days to make a strong offer.

Just last week they called to check up well after the 2-3 day period had passed. They were disgruntled to learn that the house would be closing in 2 weeks and that there were no other homes in that section of the gated, golf community left for sale.

Buyer was so upset that their dream home would not come true. When reminded that all had been openly explained (rising prices, limited inventory, too low an offer and a last chance to make a realistic offer) they asked me to go knock on doors to find an anxious seller so they could make another low offer. Seriously?

Sellers are usually faster learners because if they insist on a price higher than the market will bear, the property hardly gets shown and languishes on the market.

The two ears one mouth theory does indeed work when the recipient interacts in a positive manner with the information provided. Today, a very successful businessman was trying to force me to agree that his selling price for a rather undesirable property was justified. After twice reminding him that recent comps would clearly indicate the price our market was willing to pay and twice being ignored, I simply told him I had other more important issues that needed my immediate attention. It turns out, he has a history of badgering agents until they give in. When they don’t get the deal done because his price or terms are usually outside the envelope, he moves on to another agent. A perfect case of too much talking and not enough interaction with what he should be hearing.

Constructive listening requires patience. Emotional, knee-jerk outbursts mostly miss the target because positive information can’t penetrate when the person who should be listening is not listening but talking. As in the old TV drama, Kung Fu, all we need to say is “patience grasshopper…”

GOVERNMENT TRENDS GAC UPDATE

’d like to use this month’s article as an opportunity to update our members on things the Government Affairs Committee is talking about, working on, and planning for.

We have been attending all City Council meetings, representing the GAC, as well as taking notes on what specifically the Council is discussing and voting on. We have also met with City Council members, the Mayor, and County Commissioners to keep abreast

of their recent activities and keep Council focused what is important to the business community.

Charter amendments for the City Council to vote on as ordinances will begin in early June. They then go to public hearing in late June.

The City is re-doing the Land Use Development Regulations (LUDR) and once contracted, there will be an 18-month process to re-write.

The Fire Assessment Fee, which is the last leg of the City’s Revenue Diversification Plan, is out of the court system and available for the City’s usage. We eagerly await to see the promised additional .75% mileage rate drop.

Lastly, I’d like to mention our August 5th Candidates Hobnob and October 7th Candidates Forum “Are you smarter than a politician?” both at Gulfcoast Village.

There are 4 seats in this year’s City elections, so it’s important to find out who is running. We look forward to seeing you there!

The Chamber of Commerce of Cape Coral is actively seeking trustee and director applications for the 2016 Board of Directors.

These volunteer leaders are required to attend monthly board meetings, networking events and serve on committees. For most, a minimum of 5 to 10 hours per month is normal. However, a few give much more. We truly appreciate their commitment, as the Chamber would only be able to accomplish one-half of what it does without volunteers.

The Nomination Committee has been formed with Brett Bisbe as the Chairman and members Trish Lassiter, Stacy Lomonaco, Scott Kashman, Tony Solgard and Tom Hansen. They are taking applications so that they can create a ballot of qualified members for the Board to vote on in September 2015.

Every eligible member in good standing who apply will be placed on the ballot.

However, the Nomination committee will make recommendations to the board prior to the vote. Recommendations made by the nomination committee are based on industry, gender, involvement and participation in the Chamber leadership programs.

LCEC hasn’t raised electric rates in nearly 5 years!

The increase on your upcoming electric bill is due to a tax imposed by the City of Cape Coral. LCEC customers in Cape Coral will notice a change in their electric bill beginning October 1, 2013. Cape Coral City officials recently levied a public service tax of 7 percent that will be added to monthly electric bills. The new tax will be displayed on your LCEC bill as a separate line item so it can be easily identified.

LCEC is required by law to collect the tax from business and residential customers who purchase electricity in Cape Coral. LCEC will deliver funds to the City similar to how Cape Coral franchise fees are delivered, which are also collected through electric bills.This new tax will be used to fund the City’s general operations. istorically, we change our careers three to five times in our lives on average.

For Professor “Q” this is number four. The opportunity for a fresh start at a quality organization such as Keiser University, which has an outstanding supportive and active culture, is truly awesome. Having the opportunity to work with students just out of high school, to those who have been in the workplace for twenty or thirty years, is eye opening and refreshing.

This purpose of the article is to share those ah-hah moments that all business owners and managers can learn from. Recently, while exploring Facebook, I noticed a post from Andrew Lampkins, chamber member, relating to his customer service issues at a franchise retail pool supply company. Andrew apparently showed up at the store wishing to purchase pool maintenance supplies just a few minutes prior to opening, and was made to stand outside until 9:00 AM. Andrew stated that if customers arrived prior to the usual 9 am opening of an Achieva Credit Union branch, and his team members do not invite you in for a cup of coffee while they complete their opening procedures, then we should let Andrew know. That

philosophy is representative of outstanding customer service.

At Keiser University, we have a team of professionals that contact each student if they miss a class, or if assignments are the least bit late. The intent is to encourage students to engage in the education process, and to explore the barriers to student success. Next, instructors and administrators attempt to remove those barriers for successful student engagement.

Additionally, students in Keiser University programs go through a midterm review process where instructors collaboratively review student current progress and efforts. Instructors do weekly reports on their students to alert department heads and administrators of at risk students. These efforts have a substantial influence on overall student retention, which is now at the highest level it has been at the Fort Myers campus, since it started almost five years ago.

So the question is what steps are you taking to improve your customer retention?
