to improve the health of skeletal muscles, bones and all the cells in our body.
As mentioned, protein digestion requires HCL which is produced in the stomach. Many people who use proton pump inhibitors (PPI’s) such as Prilosec lower the acid production in their stomach to the point where digestion and absorption of amino acids is hampered. I usually counsel my patients to find the cause of their heartburn and we often find that this usually comes from taking in too many unhealthy food and drink products. Therefore, the treatment for heartburn/reflux is to remove the offending agent (spicy foods, too much alcohol or coffee and too many sweets). Once this is done, the medication is often not needed and the side effects of these medications are alleviated. The TV commercials for PPI medications do not highlight the fact that they can cause osteoporosis, an increased risk for pneumonia as well as leaky gut Once the protein source passes from the mouth and esophagus syndrome. So, I emphasize, remove the cause of the heartburn and into the stomach, hydrochloric acid (HCL) activates the enzyme all is well! called Pepsin which starts the process of converting protein into amino acids. After this, the amino acids are absorbed and Dietary protein sources include all animal meats, dairy, transported throughout the body. Once taken up by cells, in vegetables, nuts and seeds. According to the research, whey protein makes the blood more acidic and increases the risk for bone source of energy. breakdown (osteoporosis). Protein is one of the essential macro nutrients in the same category as carbohydrates and fats. Macro nutrients are the building blocks for all the cells in the body. In addition to macro nutrients, the body also needs what are called micro nutrients which include all the vitamins and minerals that are required by the cells to use the proteins, fats and carbohydrates we eat. Proteins, fats and carbohydrates are used to make components of all cells and the micro nutrients are enzymes that allow these chemical reactions to happen.
It is important to understand that we do not want the body to be using protein as an energy source. We want the body to use fat Next let’s discuss protein requirements. According to many of for energy production. When we first start to move around in the the national organizations the requirement is 0.8 - 1.5 grams per morning, the body utilizes glucose which is an immediate source kilogram which would mean that a male weighing 150 lbs. If a person is doing extreme exercise, then the total amount nutrients (vitamins and minerals) but this process also requires needed increases beyond 105 grams.
HEALTHY TRENDS CONTINUED
As you can now understand, protein digestion, absorption and utilization are finely tuned processes that require many different moving parts. Hopefully, this explanation helps the reader understand the intricacies of this process and understand why it is so important to eat and drink healthy proteins while also getting the proper amount of various vitamins and minerals.
We need to be aware of the ramifications of eating or drinking too much protein. The body takes the protein it needs to repair cell damage, make new cells, produce hormones and chemicals as mentioned and it essentially stores protein as skeletal muscle. If the intake exceeds the needs of the body, the protein has to be removed in a healthy way. The kidneys are the organs that deal with this excess; and, when the levels of protein in the body get too high, the kidneys begin to fail. The medical term is renal insufficiency and as the condition progresses, we use the term renal/kidney failure. I recently read an article about a Strongman competition where one of the competitors had a diet which included several hundred grams of protein per day. Like many other situations in which a

person abuses his or her body, this can be tolerated for a short time; yet, in the long run this amount of protein will hurt a person’s kidneys which places the person at risk for renal insufficiency and even renal failure. In summary, the take home messages are: we all need protein. Protein is essential for life. We need a certain amount but not too much. Vegetables provide more protein calorie for calorie. If you prefer to get your protein from animal sources, be sure it is antibiotic free, grass fed and not contaminated with pesticides, herbicides or fecal bacteria which is very common, especially in chicken meat. If you eat a lot of soy protein, be sure it is not genetically modified (non-GMO). Limit your protein intake depending on the amount and intensity of exercise you do and visit with your primary care physician regularly to have a blood test to check the function of your kidneys. Get 7-8 hours of quality sleep nightly so you make enough growth hormone which will allow you to use the protein that you are eating to keep your body and brain strong and functional. And the other good news is that although our high season was disappointing for most agents in the Cape, we are seeing some signs of strong life once again even though prices are rising and it’s Once upon a time not too long ago, officially summer. there was a beautiful community called Cape Coral where homes began A side effect of rising prices is that less people can afford to buy selling faster than baby gators chasing or even look at properties. Cape Coral numbers for the three month period listing is a very above average home at $109 per foot. Mr. Newbie ending 6/28/16: was offering 30% below the listed price and wanted my seller to pay $7,500 of his buyer’s closing costs. Wow! What fantasy-world does he live in? Just because you might have read about somebody sneaking in a low-ball price and getting the deal doesn’t mean that strategy will work on a regular basis. What it does is demonstrate lack of experience while offending sellers. Needles to say, that offer was easily rejected. But, we are seeing less and less of those crazy offers as the market grows steadily. For single family homes, inventory has been steadily decreasing while prices are steady.
